Latest News: Dave Chappelle Wins Fifth Grammy for Best Comedy Album

The album was taken from a speech by Chappelle , 50, at his former high school, the Duke Ellington School of the Arts in June 2022. The school planned to rename its theater in Chappelle's honor, but the comedian deferred the honor to highlight “the nuance of art.” In the album, Chappelle defended his 2021 Netflix special Dave Chappelle: The Closer , which received criticism for the comedian's comments about the transgender community.

Born in 1973 in Washington, D.C., Dave Chappelle began pursuing a career in stand-up comedy in high school. He made his film debut in Robin Hood: Men In Tights in 1993 and starred in the stoner comedy Half Baked later in the decade. The comedian hit the big time in 2003 with the launch of Chappelle's Show , before he abruptly walked away from the wildly popular program on the eve of its third season. Chappelle resumed touring as a stand-up comic in 2013 and later delivered a series of acclaimed specials for Netflix.

FULL NAME: David Khari Webber Chappelle BORN: August 24, 1973 BIRTHPLACE: Washington, D.C. SPOUSE: Elaine Chappelle (m. 2001) CHILDREN: Sulayman, Ibrahim, and Sanaa ASTROLOGICAL SIGN: Virgo

Comedian and actor David Khari Webber Chappelle was born on August 24, 1973, in Washington, D.C. Chappelle's parents were both professors: His father, William, taught at Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio, and his mother, Yvonne, worked as a professor at Howard University and then the University of Maryland, while also serving as a Unitarian minister. Chappelle's parents separated when Dave was 6 years old, and he subsequently began splitting time between his parents' homes in Wasington and Ohio.

Inspired by the sitcom The Cosby Show and its star, comedian Bill Cosby , Chappelle decided he, too, wanted to have a career as a comedian. As a high school student at the Duke Ellington School of the Arts in Washington, D.C., Chappelle began a stand-up career. Because he was underage, his mother often had to accompany him to clubs as a legal guardian. Even at an early age, Chappelle's brand of humor was controversial, leading to frequent heckling—he was even booed offstage during amateur night at New York's famous Apollo Theatre.

Robin Hood: Men in Tights and 'Comic Relief VI'

Dave Chappelle decided to forgo college to start a stand-up career in New York City. By the early 1990s, he had begun earning accolades for his work in comedy. He made his film debut in Mel Brooks ' Robin Hood: Men in Tights (1993) and became the youngest comedian to be featured on the HBO special Comic Relief VI (1994).

Chappelle also began to make his way into television, scoring the first of the many TV deals he would eventually be offered at age 18. Of the pilots that he shot, only one made it to the air: Buddies , a Disney-produced ABC series focused on two friends living in New York City. Unfortunately for Chappelle, the series was canceled after just four episodes, but his celebrity continued to grow thereafter.

The Nutty Professor and Half Baked

Chappelle began making appearances in more films in the '90s with more significant parts. He starred in The Nutty Professor in 1996, alongside Eddie Murphy , and made his way into three popular films in 1998— Woo , You've Got Mail and Half Baked . The same year, Chappelle's father died, forcing the comedian to reevaluate his life.

'Killin' Them Softly' and Undercover Brother

From there, Chappelle filmed the immensely popular comedy special Killin' Them Softly in 2000, followed by the film Undercover Brother in 2002. While his popularity continued to grow, he had yet to encounter the role that would catapult him to superstardom.

In 2003, Dave Chappelle landed his own show on the Comedy Central cable network, entitled Chappelle's Show . Chappelle received three Emmy Award nominations for the wildly popular and controversial show, which frequently addressed race relations and featured musical guests. The provocative comedian not only gained the attention of popular TV personalities such as Oprah Winfrey and Inside the Actor's Studio's James Lipton, he was offered a massive TV deal from Comedy Central after only two seasons, a reported $50 million for an additional two-year contract.

Chappelle's Show was about to begin its third season when Chappelle abruptly left during production in 2005. Unhappy with the direction the show had taken and pressured by network executives to change the tone of the comedic series, Chappelle left the United States to visit South Africa. Upon his return, he began living a more reclusive life, moving to Yellow Springs, Ohio, and making only a handful of public appearances. In 2006, he released the documentary Dave Chappelle's Block Party —one of his last moments in the spotlight for several years.

In February 2013, to the surprise of many, Dave Chappelle surfaced at the famed New York City comedy club The Comedy Cellar. He was later joined on stage by comedian Chris Rock and the two discussed the possibility of a tour, exciting many fans. Following the unexpected appearance, Chappelle made a more formal approach to his return to stand-up, performing several scheduled stand-up gigs throughout the South, including Atlanta, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee.

Chappelle also headlined the Funny or Die Tour, beginning in Austin, Texas, on August 23, 2013. He referred to his exit from Comedy Central during his set, telling the audience that "It’s easier to resign as the Pope than it is to quit a cable show."

Chi-Raq , A Star Is Born , Netflix

After making his return to the big screen in Spike Lee 's Chi-Raq (2015), Chappelle delivered a series of concert specials for Netflix in 2017, eventually winning Best Comedy Album for The Age of Spin & Deep in the Heart of Texas at the 2018 Grammy Awards. That year, he also enjoyed a supporting role in Bradley Cooper 's remake of A Star Is Born .

In May 2019, the Kennedy Center named Chappelle the winner of its prestigious Mark Twain Prize for American Humor. A few months later, Netflix released another Chappelle stand-up special, the Grammy-winning Sticks & Stones .

The streaming giant then released Chappelle's specials The Closer in 2021 and What's in a Name? in 2022.

In 2001, Chappelle married Elaine Mendoza Erfe; the couple met in Brooklyn, New York. They have two sons, Sulayman and Ibrahim, and a daughter named Sanaa.

Elaine is known for leading a very private personal life and rarely appears in public with her husband. She and Dave live on a farm in Yellow Springs, Ohio, which the comedian purchased in 2005.

According to Celebrity Net Worth , Chappelle's net worth is estimated to be around $70 million as of December 2023.

Dave Chappelle's 'The Closer' controversy

Dave Chappelle, who lives in Yellow Springs, Ohio, came under fire in 2021 for his Netflix standup special "The Closer." The special provoked backlash due to his remarks about the LBGTQ+ community , in particular his focus on the transgender community.

In the special, Chappelle resurfaced a December 2019 controversy in which “Harry Potter” author J.K. Rowling drew backlash  after conflating sex with gender  and defending ideas suggesting that changing one's biological sex was a threat to her own gender identity.

Chappelle also attempted to paint a juxtaposition between the pace of civil rights gained by the LGBTQ community and those fought for by the Black community.

Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos defended his decision to keep the special on the streaming service amid internal criticism from company employees.

Sarandos sent a staff memo at the time pledging Netflix's commitment to the special, citing Netflix's work in supporting their talent's creative freedom.

Sarandos' support of the special led to a walkout from a group of Netflix employees in 2021, a gesture that was amplified by emotional pleas from supporters of the walkout who rallied outside company headquarters.

The employees said company executives dismissed their concerns that Chappelle's comments in "The Closer" could lead to violence against the trans community.

At the time, two employees, one transgender and one non-binary, filed labor charges against the streaming giant alleging the company retaliated against them for speaking out aboutChappelle's special.

Hours before the walkout, Netflix shared a statement with USA TODAY: "We value our trans colleagues and allies, and understand the deep hurt that’s been caused. We respect the decision of any employee who chooses to walk out, and recognize we have much more work to do both within Netflix and in our content.”

"I want everyone in this audience to know that even though the media frames this that it's me versus that community, that is not what it is," Chappelle said in a 2021 Instagram clip. "Do not blame the LBGTQ (sic) community for any of this (expletive). This has nothing to do with them. It's about corporate interest, and what I can say, and what I cannot say."

"The Closer" received two Primetime Emmy nominations in 2022, including outstanding variety special (pre-recorded). Stan Lathan was also nominated for outstanding directing of a variety special for his work on "The Closer."

After the Emmy nominations were announced, people on social media voiced their frustration and criticized the decision to give further recognition to Chappelle's Netflix special.

Dave Chappelle attacked onstage

In May 2022, Chappelle was attacked onstage at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles during the Netflix Is A Joke festival.

An audience member stormed the stage asChappelle, 48, was exiting the stage after his performance, lunging at him and tackling him to the ground, according to a press release from the Los Angeles Police Department.

The man also pointed a replica handgun, which contained a knife blade, at Chappelle during the encounter, resulting in a charge for assault with a deadly weapon, according to police.

The man was identified as Isaiah Lee and in December 2022, he was sentenced to 270 days in county jail.

Dave Chappelle hosting 'Saturday Night Live'

In November 2022, Chappelle hosted "Saturday Night Live" for a third time, and the reception was not warm.

"SNL" writer Celeste Yim shared a seemingly pointed message after Chappelle was announced as host. "I'm trans and non-binary. I use they/them pronouns. Transphobia is murder and it should be condemned,"  they wrote on their Instagram Story  alongside a photo from work, captured by a Reddit screenshot.

The hosting gig also came on the heels of "SNL" having just recently hired its first nonbinary cast member, Molly Kearney, just months before.

‘Man, I Love Being Cancelled’: Dave Chappelle Defiant at Tour Kickoff

By Zack Ruskin

Zack Ruskin

Perhaps Dave Chappelle was striving for irony when he spoke about being cancelled before a sell-out crowd at San Francisco’s Chase Center on Thursday night.

Kicking off a recently announced 10-city tour, the comedian took the stage to address the ongoing backlash over his latest Netflix special, The Closer , which features a number of controversial jokes about the transgender community. Despite the rightful criticism many have shared in the wake of that special’s release, Chappelle’s career seems to be doing just fine if the arena-wide standing ovation he received upon arrival on Thursday is any indication.

Regardless, much of the comic’s material focused on his self-proclaimed status as a cultural pariah. “Man, I love being cancelled,” Chappelle told the crowd of 19,000. “It is a huge relief. It’s like getting Capone on tax evasion.”

There was, in fact, a decidedly outlaw nature to the entirety of the evening, which began with opening sets from comedian  Jeff Ross and Oakland comic Luenell Campbell. After Ross returned to “speed roast” willing members of the audience, the focus pivoted from live entertainment to a screening of Chappelle’s new documentary, Untitled .

In an Instagram post announcing his tour, Chappelle claimed that the fervor over his recent special had cost his film a chance to appear at several festivals. He also promised that those who attended would have the chance to “see what they’re trying to obstruct you from seeing.”

Well, having seen Untitled , it’s difficult to ascertain what in this movie could possibly have merited such an effort.

Largely focused on a series of intimate, outdoor shows that Chappelle hosted during the pandemic last summer in Yellow Springs, Ohio, the film is packed with appearances from other famous comics like Jon Stewart, Chris Rock, and Tiffany Haddish.

Balancing footage of the comics’ act with scenes of them bonding together by means of kayaks and kickball games, Untitled goes to great lengths to underscore the logistic challenges that went into pulling off over 50 shows long before a Covid vaccine was available.

Editor’s picks

Every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term, the 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history.

To that end, we see Chappelle buy his own equipment and hire nursing staff to make rapid testing available on-site. We also watch him engage in an ongoing struggle with the region’s zoning inspector, who threatens to shut the venue down. This culminates in what is intended to be the film’s climax: A Zoom meeting of local government officials who must decide whether to issue Chappelle’s production a temporary permit.

If it sounds anticlimactic, the same can be said for what happens next: a Covid outbreak among Chappelle’s staff that essentially ends his Yellow Springs experiment. The documentary is not, however, without its powerful moments, including a performance from poet Amir Sulaiman and footage capturing Chappelle’s furious response to the murder of George Floyd in a set filmed ten days after Floyd was killed.

Over the course of the documentary, a number of small business owners in Yellow Springs are also offered brief spotlights. It all serves to emphasize an overarching theme built around the importance of community and togetherness, which is one Chappelle returns to again and again throughout the film. From that angle, Untitled can ostensibly be seen as a portrait of a small town trying to weather a pandemic with the help of some familiar faces, but in truth, the narrative is really driven by Chappelle’s own efforts to make sense of the pandemic by going full Field of Dreams .

What, if anything, he learns from the whole experience is difficult to say, given Untitled is ultimately best understood as a visual scrapbook of an unusual summer spent with very rich and funny friends.

Such amenities were also on display in San Francisco, where Chappelle’s time at the microphone following his documentary screening was quickly ceded to a parade of popular Bay Area music talents. Speaking fondly of his relationship with the region, Chappelle began his abbreviated set by vaguely addressing the backlash surrounding him before quickly segueing into a gay joke and then inviting Oakland soul artist Goapele to the stage.

From that point forward — it’s impossible to say when, exactly, as every member of the audience had their phones locked in Yondr pouches upon arrival — the night basically turned into a Bay Area block party.

After two songs from Goapele, Chappelle returned for a few more brief remarks and then brought out another Oakland musician: R&B singer-superproducer Raphael Saadiq . Though both Goapele and Saadiq expressed support for Chappelle, neither mentioned any specifics regarding his situation and why he’s in it.

Man who attacked dave chappelle sues hollywood bowl, security company, pitbull is ready to ‘party after dark’ on north american tour.

From there, the hyphy movement enjoyed a brief comeback courtesy of a medley of performances from Too Short, E-40 , and Lil Jon . Running through certified Bay Area anthems like “Blow the Whistle” and “Tell Me When to Go,” the set saw the crowd at Chase Center go predictably wild.

Then all that was left was a few closing words from Chappelle, who again returned to the subject of his alleged cancellation to end the night.

“For the past three or four weeks,” he said, “they’ve been saying in the news that I’ve been cancelled. It doesn’t matter. The point is, no matter what they say, we are together.”

Oscillating between vague platitudes about unity and his delight at being back in San Francisco, Chappelle’s material came across like the words of a man at a crossroads. The comedian himself admitted as much, when he closed his set by noting that the last time he felt this way, he decided to quit Chappelle’s Show .

“I’m going through something,” Chappelle added. “It might be history.”

And with that observation, so was the evening.

It’s difficult to determine exactly where Chappelle goes next once this tour concludes. With his Netflix obligations complete, his options are wide open. Again, this would seem to contradict the very essence of whatever it means to be cancelled, but hopefully the fervor over Chappelle dedicating an entire special to defending his terrible jokes about transgender people will inspire him to rethink what it truly takes to bring people together.

After an explosive and contentious Netflix special in 2021, Dave Chappelle is hitting the road again.

The veteran comedian has announced the dates for a fall stand-up comedy tour, titled “Dave Chappelle Live,” which will open with twin dates at New York City’s Madison Square Garden on Aug. 22-23 and conclude at Chicago’s United Center on Oct. 4.

Tickets to the tour, produced by Live Nation, will be available starting with local presales on Wednesday, July 26. The general onsale begins on Thursday, July 27, at 10 a.m. local time at Ticketmaster.com.

Popular on Variety

Chappelle has been a controversial figure following his 2021 Netflix special “The Closer,” in which he made jokes about transgender people, leading to  company walkouts  and protests last October. Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos originally defended Chappelle, saying in statement that the comedian is “one of the most popular stand-ups today” and “as with our other talent, we work hard to support their creative freedom — even though this means there will always be content on Netflix some people believe is harmful.” Sarandos ultimately said he “screwed up” in his reaction to the Chappelle backlash.

The comedian made headlines again in 2022 when he was attacked on stage  while performing a comedy set during the Netflix Is a Joke festival in Los Angeles.

Dave Chappelle's 'The Closer' controversy

Dave Chappelle came under fire in 2021 for his Netflix standup special "The Closer." The special provoked backlash due to his remarks about the LBGTQ+ community , in particular his focus on the transgender community.

Dave Chappelle's real estate empire helped 'restore' Ohio, comedian says

Comedian dave chappelle says yellow springs, ohio, 'lost its cultural anchor' as he tries to restore the 'cultural and creative economy'.

'Kennedy' panelists Jimmy Failla, Jessica Tarlov and Hannah Cox discuss comedian Dave Chappelle's show being canceled by a Minneapolis venue after social media backlash.

Dave Chappelle continues to battle cancel culture

'Kennedy' panelists Jimmy Failla, Jessica Tarlov and Hannah Cox discuss comedian Dave Chappelle's show being canceled by a Minneapolis venue after social media backlash.

Dave Chappelle is clapping back at the critics.

The controversial comedian gave context to why he owns millions of dollars in real estate in Yellow Springs, Ohio, in a recent feature in Bloomberg magazine.

Homeowners in Yellow Springs became concerned once Chappelle started buying large swaths of real estate in their small town.

"With the decline of Antioch College several years ago, Yellow Springs lost its cultural anchor," Chappelle's rep told the outlet on behalf of the comedian. "My interest has always been in restoring the cultural and creative economy Antioch helped to foster and which made Yellow Springs a haven for art, music, culture and academia."

Some residents in the town spoke out about their concerns with Chappelle's real estate purchases in their county.

According to Bloomberg, a resident shared that the comedian is "a force that’s turning us into the place that we’re all trying to stay away from."

Chappelle spent most of his adolescent years with his mother in Washington, D.C., but lived with his father in Yellow Springs in middle school.

Chappelle bought a home in Ohio in the late '90s and moved back full time in 2004, according to the outlet. He stepped away from his Comedy Central show around the time he left Hollywood for the Midwest.

He continued to tour nationally but kept a low profile locally, Bloomberg reported. It wasn't until 2015 that he started hosting shows in Ohio, beginning in a local barn. Chappelle called these shows "Juke Joints."

In 2017, he made a "rare public appearance" going in front of the village council to call for police reform. In 2018, he signed a multimillion-dollar Netflix deal for his comedy specials and founded Iron Table Holdings LLC.

He then began buying up real estate in Ohio. In 2020, he purchased eight homes in Greene County, bringing his total to 20, according to the outlet.

In November 2020, Chappelle appeared on "Saturday Night Live" and discussed the state of his small town after the coronavirus pandemic hit, prompting businesses to close and people to remain indoors.

"My town was dying," he said at the time, so "I did shows in my neighbor’s cornfield, and these shows were very successful and may have even helped save the town."

He also said in his 2020 SNL monologue, "The local farmers — my neighbors — started to complain that my shows were too noisy — in a cornfield!"

Chappelle said the town meetings were "embarrassing," which stirred resentment.

"I resented that these country farmers could decide a guy like me’s fate. People don’t deserve to do that. They haven’t seen enough. They don’t know anything," he said at the time, per Bloomberg.

Chappelle's outdoor comedy shows reportedly commissioned "$12 million in direct and indirect economic activity for the state of Ohio, including $4 million for the village."

According to Bloomberg, at the time, Matthew Cole, the area’s only CPA, wrote in a letter, "A few local businesses would not exist today if it weren’t for the shows."
