How to Take a Day Trip to Bursa from Istanbul

A day trip to Bursa from Istanbul is super easy and the city is worth a visit.

UNESCO recognizes Bursa, Turkey as the birthplace of the Ottoman Empire, so there is some major history here. For nature lovers, there’s a gorgeous national park as well. I actually spent a whole weekend in Bursa to go skiing ( read the complete guide here ) but a day trip is definitely doable as well.

If you’re in Istanbul for a while, Bursa is a spectacular escape from the city. Learn exactly how to get there with my step-by-step guide and then check out the six best things to do on a day trip to Bursa, Turkey!

How to Get to Bursa from Istanbul

A day trip to Bursa from Istanbul is pretty easy.

Ferries to Bursa leave the Yenikapi Ferry Port daily and take 1 hour and 45 minutes. Prices vary a bit, but I only paid 53 lira / 10 usd for the round trip. Check schedules and prices here to begin planning. (Select round trip and search from Yenikapi to Bursa.)

If you’re not a Turkish citizen or resident, you can’t buy tickets online. So, you can either stop by the Yenikapi port ahead of time to buy them at the ticket office or try your luck at buying on the day of – I opted to buy mine early to ensure my spot.

The Bursa ferry port is located outside of the city so once you arrive there are a few more steps to reach the city center.

First, take a shared white van to the Emek metro station. These cost 3.5 lira / .66 usd and take about 20 minutes. Then, buy a BursaKart in the metro station and the Emek metro line will take you through the city.

If you want to explore the Old Town, get off at the Demirtaşpaşa stop or one around it. To get to the Teleferik from the Old Town, taxis only cost about 20 lira / 4 usd more.

When you head back to Istanbul you can return to the ferry the same way you came in, but it’s important to know that there are two Mudanya ferry ports. One is for the IDO ferry and one is for the BUDO ferry.

If you take the metro back to Emek you have two options. You can take the 1/GY bus from there to the IDO ferry port or you can take the shared white vans – just make sure to specify the van is going to the IDO ferry before you board.

There is a lot to see and do in Bursa because of the city’s long history and beautiful nature surrounding it. These are some of the highlights to add to your itinerary!

The longest cable car in the world in Bursa, Turkey

1. Ride the Longest Cable Car in the World to Uludag National Park

Uludag National Park is the number one attraction in the area and no day trip to Bursa would be complete without a visit. Even though it’s high in the mountains, it’s super easy to access with the cable car – the longest one in the world, in fact!

To ride it, just take a 10-minute taxi ride from the Old Town to the teleferik. From here, round trip tickets on the cable car cost 80 lira / 15 usd each and the ride is 45 minutes (did I mention this is the longest cable car in the world?).

The views from the cable car are beyond gorgeous and at the park, you can go skiing, sledding, and tubing in the winter or hiking in the summer. No matter what, you’ll definitely enjoy the spectacular views of the surrounding mountains and natural landscape.

If you don’t want to go on your own, you can also book a guided tour to the cable car and Uludag National Park with a local on Airbnb.

My tip: Lines for the teleferik can get really long (especially on weekends) and traveling to and from Uludag can be time-consuming. It took us 3 hours to get from Uludag National Park back to the ferry port on a Sunday afternoon so be sure to plan accordingly. Visit on a weekday, go at off-peak hours (traveling up early and returning early), or consider extending your trip to two-days and one-night to fully enjoy Uludag National Park.

2. Wander the Silk Bazaar

Koza Han, the silk bazaar in Bursa, is located in the Old Town and is one of many UNESCO recognized sites in the city.

It’s built into an old stone inn from 1491 and stepping inside is truly like stepping back in time. Browse the silk shops that line the two levels or relax in the courtyard with a glass of tea.

I recommend trying a unique dessert – ice cream with warm semolina halvah on top – at Hacı Şerif before you go.

3. Eat Under a 600-year-old Tree

The Inca Historical Tree – also known as Inkaya – is located in a village near Bursa, Turkey and the cafe under the ancient sprawling branches is a great place to enjoy a cup or coffee or tea while you ponder the meaning of life and the passage of time. Just like Uludag National Park, try to go early or on a weekday to avoid the crowds.

Although Inkaya is one of the most famous trees in Bursa it actually isn’t the oldest one. That honor goes to a 985-year-old tree in the Armutköy cemetery.

4. Enjoy the Panoramic Views from the Nusretiye Clock Tower

Ok, the clock tower itself isn’t that impressive, but the views certainly are. The large walkway around it gave us expansive views of Bursa and the surrounding mountains.

For photography lovers, a stop at the Nusretiye Clock Tower is a must. Plus, its within walking distance from Koza Han so it’s easy to get there as well!

No trip to Bursa is complete without trying the famous Iskender Kebab

5. Try Iskender Kebab

Everyone that I told about our trip to Bursa said the same thing – you must try the Iskender kebab! It was invented by a man named İskender Efendi in Bursa, Turkey more than 150 years ago.

Iskender kebab is a flavorful spongy flatbread that’s topped with meat, butter, and tomato sauce. It comes with yogurt sauce on the side as well.

Debates about the best place to eat Iskender kebab rage across the internet so feel free to do some research before you make up your mind. I tried Uludag Kebapcisi, the highly-recommended and 4th rated Bursa restaurant on TripAdvisor, and it was delicious.

About Bursa: History of Bursa and Bursa Information

Bursa has the title of Green (Yeşil Bursa) thanks to the 15th-century green colored tiles of the Ottoman architecture and being surrounded by nature. Two of the most interesting buildings in Bursa are Yeşil Mosque and Yeşil Tomb which means Green Mosque and Green Tomb. Green Mosque was built during the reign of Ottoman Sultan Mehmet I who was the sun of Yıldırım Beyazit. The Green Mosque is called Green owing to the beautiful green colored tiles inside of it which date back to the 15th century. Evliya Çelebi who was an Ottoman traveler and a travel writer called them "emeralds sparkling in the sunlight". Green Tomb which is on the other side if the street is the tomb of Sultan Mehmet I who died in 1421. An impressive example of the early Ottoman architecture with its decoration inside and outside. Nearby there are the tombs of family members of Mehmet I; his sons Mahmut and Mustafa, his son Yusuf Çelebi and his daughters.

In ancient times, Bursa was the capital of the Bithynia region in Anatolian history. The city was named after its founder Prusias I (228-185BC). The fourth king of Bithynia. Later it becomes Bursa as it has been pronounced similarly. In 74 BC, Bithynia came under direct Roman rule. Before that, it was ruled by Nicomedes IV Philopator. He had the help of Romans to obtain his power to restore his kingdom. Since Nicomedes had no legitimate male heir, he willed his realm to Rome. In 1075 Selçuk Turks captured the city, it was retaken by the Christian forces in 1097 during the First Crusade. Again the Selçuks then Byzantines again, which kept going changing hands in the 12th and 13th centuries. In 1326 it was captured by the Ottoman Sultan Orhan Gazi who made it the capital of the Ottoman Empire. The first 6 Ottoman Sultans were buried in Bursa.

Bursa was an important center on the trade route. Therefore Bursa is the center of the silk industry which dates back to the Byzantine periods.

Uludağ which means Great Mount is approximately 2554 meters high, 36 km away from the city center by a road. The cable car is the best way to take you up to the Uludağ on the slopes you can enjoy the ride. Uludağ National Park is a paradise for nature-lovers which has 11400 hectares of area. All surrounded by the trees such as Chestnut, olive, oak, plane trees, elm, pine trees, aspen, and juniper. It is renowned for winter sports thanks to its available climate conditions. Hotel rooms are in great demand during the winter. Trekking for summer is also nice in Uludağ.

The famous Ulu Cami which means Great Mosque was built by the Ottoman Sultan Yıldırım Beyazit. The mosque has a şadırvan with a pool inside of it. The ablution fountain is the interesting şadırvan inside which makes it unique among the other Ottoman mosques. The domes are in four groups of five. Nearby the Ulu Camii lies the Ottoman bazaar. The Koza Han which means silk hanwas built in 1451. Up there, there is a citadel restored by the Byzantines and Ottomans. Inside there are the tombs of Osman Gazi and Orhan Gazi. Osman Gazi who was the founder of the Ottomans was buried here in 1326. Nearby you can see Old Turkish houses. Tophane has a beautiful view of the city now. There are so many other Ottoman buildings like the Muradiye Complex built during the reign of Murat II in the 15th century. The mosque is decorated with geometrical and floral patterned tiles. Orhan Gazi Mosque, Emir Sultan Mosque, Yıldırım Beyazit complex, Archaeological Museum of Bursa, Mosque of Sultan Murat I, Museum of Turkish Art are among the historical attractions of Bursa.

Bursa is surrounded by its lovely, historical, and natural beauty districts. İnegöl is 38km from Bursa which is famous for its meatballs, its fruit, and vegetables. İnegöl Köfte (meatballs) are made from lamb and served with raw onion rings. Good quality traditional-style furniture is produced in factories on the outskirts of the town. They have been exported to the Middle East as well. Bursa is famous for spas in the vicinity such as Oylat which is the less-known one and probably the most beautiful one which is 20km from İnegöl. Gemlik is on the gulf in the Marmara Sea. Being famous for its olive trees, you can taste these delicious olives in the breakfast all over Turkey.

İznik which is along the side of İznik Lake. İznik is famous for its Hagia Sophia which is the most important Byzantine building in İznik. The Seventh Ecumenical Council was held in 787 in this Hagia Sophia of Nicaea which was the ancient name of İznik. Uluabat Lake is 30km to Bursa. This shallow lake has the village Gölyazı nearby. Some fishermen live in the area and some architectural fragments of the ancient city Apollonia can be seen in the ruins nearby. Karacabey is famous for its excellent vegetables which is a farmers' district.

If you visit Bursa, you should taste the İskender Kebab (Kebap in Turkish) which is identified with Alexander the Great, that comes legendary, though.

Our journey starts with a ferry down to Yalova, enjoying the lovely conutry-side view.

Drive to Bursa, former Ottoman Capital which was founded by the Bitnynian King Prusias I Cholus "the Lame" (reigned 228-185 BC), and he also gave his name -altered to the Hellenistic "Prusa"- the city. Legend has it that the great Carthaginian general Hannibal helped him to choose the site. The city is frequently cited as "Yeşil Bursa" (meaning "Green Bursa") in a reference to the beautiful parks and gardens located across its urban tissue, as well as to the vast forests in rich variety that extend in its surrounding region.

The city is synonymous with the mountain Uludağ which towers behind the city core and which is also a famous ski resort. The mausoleums of early Ottoman sultans are located in Bursa and the numerous edifices built throughout the Ottoman period constitute the city's main landmarks. The surrounding fertile plain, its thermal baths, several interesting museums, notably a rich museum of archaeology, and a rather orderly urban growth are further principal elements that complete Bursa's overall picture. After visiting to Ulucamii and Green Mosque-Mausoleum complex, you will have a lunch of famous "Kebap of Alexander The Great".

After the lunch, we will climb to Uludağ Mountain (the legendary Mount Olympos) by cable car (first stage) which is a favourite center of the winter sports held and as well as skiing, its richness of flora and fauna has made it into a National Park and summer activities like trekking and camping are also popular, visit to Ulucami (Grand Mosque) the major mosque of Bursa and a landmark of early Ottoman architecture, the Green Mosque and the Green Mausoleum, the old Silk Market in the Covered Bazaar.

Istanbul Bursa Day Tour begins during the morning from the city centre of Istanbul. A fully air conditioned bus will pick you up from your hotel. A tour guide will accompany you during this trip in order to provide interesting descriptions and assist you. The bus will drive you towards the harbour in order to embark into a car ferry and cross the Marmara Sea. The Green Mosque was commissioned in 1412 by Sultan Mehmed I Çelebi

Istanbul Bursa Day Tour continues with a stop at a Turkish Delight Shop. There, you can learn some interesting facts about this famous Turkish dessert, taste different flavours and purchase your favourite ones. A road trip follows towards Bursa, where you will visit the Uludag Mountain. A short stop will be made at a 600-year old plane tree in order to snap some photos and observe its imposing size. Then, you will continue with the road trip to the mountain, where a lunch break will be offered at a local restaurant.

Energized and relaxed, you will be driven towards the centre of the mountain where hotels are. Once there, you will have free time to spend as you wish. The beauty of nature will offer you the perfect backdrop for some photos and give you energy boosts to proceed with your exploration. At the end of the free time, you will join an ultra-fun cable car ride from the mountain towards the centre of Bursa.

Daily Bursa and Uludag Tour Itinerary

Bursa Tour starts with pick up from your hotel. Then drive to the port and take the ferry to Bursa. When we arrive in Bursa city center, we will visit Green Mosque, the biggest mosque in the city, and the Green Tomb. The next stop will be the Uludağ mountain where we will have a barbecue lunch.

After lunch, you will have free time to do Atv Safari, ski on the mountain, or do ski motor. After enjoying your time at the top of the mountain, we drive to the city center again. We continue our Bursa Day Tour by visiting the local bazaar where you can taste and buy local products such as chesnut, honey, olive oil, and Turkish delight. Today we went to bursa tour with minibus. The bursa tour company picked up from our hotel and than our bus driver drived to bursa way. While we were on the way we used ferryboat and high way. In bursa first we visited uludag mountain and from mountain to bursa city we used cable car. After we visited old city and back to istanbul around 22 pm. All day oir driver and bursa tour guide did very good job. We loved bursa trip.

They have very good price but excellent tour. They picked me up from my hotel. The worst part of was in the morning. Some guest late so we have to wait them. After everthing was okey.
