Located in the northwest portion of South Carolina, Greenville is the county seat of Greenville County and its largest city as well.

Due to its convenient location near the neighboring states of Georgia, Tennessee, and North Carolina, Greenville is a great place to hang your hat while exploring the region.

Though there are many attractions within city limits, this article focuses on day-trips to historical, natural, and recreational sites in surrounding towns, most of which aren’t more than an hour away.

Many of the towns included have multiple attractions, making visits to them an efficient use of valuable vacation time.

1. Table Rock State Park

South Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountains are some of the most scenic and majestic in the region, and they’re also among the oldest.

Table Rock State Park is comprised of thousands of acres of pristine forests, mountains, lakes, and rivers, and is a magnet for sportsmen, outdoor enthusiasts, photographers, and campers.

The state park’s main entrance is an easy drive north from Greenville and includes cabins, campsites, and a few easy to reach swimming holes that are the perfect places to cool off during the notoriously hot summer months.

In addition to its natural beauty and amenities, the park is also historical; much of it was built by the CCC in the ‘30s.

2. Lazy Bear Winery

Though most people don’t associate South Carolina with wine production, like many states, it’s experienced a vineyard and winery renaissance in the last decade.

The Lazy Bear Winery on Hester Store Road in nearby Dacusville is one of the most popular and is particularly well-known for its sweet and fruity wines that have distinct notes of peaches, berries, and citrus.

There’s a gift shop on site that includes the full spectrum of their products. Tours and tastings are available for groups of up to 12, but you’ll need to call and let them know you’re coming a week or two in advance.

3. Easley Therapeutic Massage & Wellness Center

These days, when it comes to muscle, bone, and joint pain, most people go running to the medicine cabinet for relief, but for many sufferers, traditional therapeutic massage is a natural and inexpensive option.

As a disclaimer, I’m no doctor, so it’s probably best to consult one first, but for those looking for an hour or two of pampered relaxation, consider heading to Easley Therapeutic Massage and Wellness Center on South 5th Street in Easley.

They offer a wide variety of therapies, so finding one that’s a good match won’t be a problem; they’re particularly adept at easing the symptoms of migraines, sciatica, and fibromyalgia.

4. Foothills Playhouse

Community theaters are wonderful places to check out when visiting a new area, and though every town doesn’t have one, many do.

The Foothills Playhouse in Easley has been around for ages and is an intimate venue that you definitely won’t mistake for Broadway, but many previous guests have noted that the productions they saw exceeded their expectations.

Nearly all the talent is local, and the cost of admission is dirt-cheap compared to big city venues.

Their productions include old favorites like Arsenic and Old Lace. The best way to see what’s on their calendar is to give them a call or check online.

5. Pickens County Museum of Art and History

Pickens County South Carolina is pretty rural, so it often comes as a bit of a surprise to visitors that it has such a fantastic art and history museum.

The museum houses permanent exhibits, and at different times of the year, temporary ones from other galleries as well, so no matter how many times you visit, you’ll likely see something new and interesting.

The museum is located inside a historic jailhouse from the early 20th century, and the outside grounds are full of wildflowers that are particularly colorful in spring.

Previous guests have noted that the facilities and exhibits were more typical of what you’d find in a larger city.

6. Hagood Mill Historic Site

Located on Hagood Mill Road in Pickens, the Hagood Mill Historic Site is the perfect destination for those looking to take in the area’s incredible natural beauty while getting a unique insight into the past.

The Hagood Mill was once a working mill that processed many of the area’s farm products like corn and wheat into meal and flour.

During the warm months, the area around the mill hosts food and music festivals that are fun for the whole family. There are trailheads nearby that lead into the forest among, where there are ancient Native American petroglyphs that are said to be more than 5,000 years old.

7. Bee Well Honey and Bee Supply

Also located in Pickens is Bee Well Honey and Bee Supply.

It’s a working bee farm with an onsite store. In addition to their honey products, they offer a full range of hard-to-get items like raw milk, organic eggs, and natural supplements and vitamins.

They’re open year-round, and for those looking to get into bee raising, they offer starter bee packages which are available in the spring.

There’s also a popular bike trail nearby called ‘Doodle Trail,’ so throw the mountain bikes on the roof and make a day of it.

The farm is located on Hampton Avenue just outside town.

8. BMW Factory Tour

Located just off Interstate 85 in Spartanburg, the BMW factory has been churning out luxury brand cars and SUVs for nearly 20 years, and tours of the facility are one of the most popular activities in the Spartanburg area.

They fill up quickly, so it’s advisable to book your tour well in advance of your trip.

The guided tours typically take about two hours; along the way, guests will see how cars are made from beginning to end.

It’s a fascinating experience for adults and children alike, and the facility and skill of the workers are pretty amazing.

9. Greer Farmers Market

Even in the most rural communities, you’ll likely find a farmer’s market or two within a few miles. For those who find themselves on the road in Greer, the Greer Farmer’s Market would be well worth a stop.

Open on Thursday afternoons seasonally from April to October; it’s full of unique products that you won’t find elsewhere.

In addition to fruit, vegetables, and dairy products, the market also sports arts and crafts, prepared food items, and locally-made health and body items.

They’re known for their fresh baked goods too, and buying a thing or two is a great way to support local farmers and entrepreneurs.

10. Pelham Mill Park

In centuries past, water was a primary source of power, especially for the small local mills that dotted the landscape from coast to coast.

Pelham Mill Park is located on East Phillips Road in Greer, and though much of the original structure is gone, it’s still a fascinating site that’s a beautiful mixing of the natural and human-made worlds.

Though it won’t take long to see the mill, there is a dog park, picnic tables, and a few plaques nearby which give interesting historical information, showing what the mill looked like and how it functioned.

Consider a short visit before heading to the farmer’s market.

11. Discovery Island Waterpark

If you’ve never been to South Carolina in the summer, you may be in for a shock.

The weather can be notoriously hot and humid, making outdoor activities unpleasant, to say the least. But for those looking for a great day-trip from Greenville, a drive to the Discovery Island Waterpark in Simpsonville would be a great way to spend the day.

The park has all the kid-friendly amenities you’d expect and was designed specifically for children up to about 10-years-old.

The waterpark is located on Baldwin Road and has plenty of shaded seating areas.

Expect a crowd if you go during peak times.

12. Heritage Park Amphitheater

Located in Simpsonville’s Heritage Park on SE Main Street, the Heritage Park Amphitheatre is one of the area’s most popular venues for live outdoor performances.

The cost of admission is inexpensive compared to larger urban amphitheaters, and they host a variety of events – from country and jazz to bluegrass and everything in between.

They’ve had a few big name performers in the past, like Willie Nelson, but depending on who you’re seeing, it may not be the best atmosphere for those with children.

It seems that there’s plenty of preshow imbibing, so keep an eye out for upcoming performers before making plans.

13. Paris Mountain State Park

About five miles from Greenville, Paris Mountain State Park is a summer mecca for fishermen, boaters, bikers, and hikers that’s easy to get to, inexpensive, and chock-full of recreational activities for nearly everyone.

The park has a variety of campsites. During spring and summer, it’s possible to rent paddle boats, which are a great way to see the lake and get some exercise in the process.

Private boats aren’t allowed and remember that if you plan on doing a little fishing, you’ll need a license – whether you’re a South Carolina resident or not.

14. Younts Center for Performing Arts

Located on North Main Street in Fountain Inn, South Carolina, the Younts Center for the Performing Arts is a quaint venue that hosts a variety of musical and theatrical performances, many of which are produced by local volunteers.

The Anderson County Museum is the most visited historical attraction in town and is located on Greenville Street.

It’s not the biggest museum in the world, but it features an impressive variety of historically significant items, many of which were donated by local citizens.

The museum is free to visit, and visitors should plan on spending about an hour to see all the items on display.

Artwork, clothes, weapons, documents, and photographs are included in the exhibits, giving visitors an interesting look into the past dating back to when the area was first settled.

While staying in Greenville, there are several noteworthy places to enjoy. Although Greenville is a terrific base to explore, don’t miss out on all downtown Greenville has to offer. Spend a few days experiencing Greenville before you explore. 

For instance, walk the streets of charming downtown, grab a delicious meal, and head to Falls Park at the Reedy, an impressive waterfall in the heart of town. Walk over the Liberty Bridge to soak in views of the Reedy River. Outdoor enthusiasts will enjoy walking or biking the Swamp Rabbit Trail through town or exploring Paris Mountain State Park.

The Best Road Trips from Greenville

One summer, we rented a house in the mountains with my husband’s college friends. We were in a quiet area south of the NC/SC state line. We enjoyed our time exploring the Upstate region. It is the perfect destination for outdoor adventures.

1. Travelers Rest

Also, in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, guests discover the neat community of Traveler’s Rest. Visitors can play golf, explore more of the Swamp Rabbit Trail, shop downtown, or drive out to Campbell’s Covered Bridge, a charming wooden bridge. 

Traveler’s Rest is a great way to kick off your day by exploring the surrounding area of state parks.

2. Table Rock State Park

Nature enthusiasts will want to carve out time for Table Rock State Park, a large complex north of Greenville. The Park was built by the CCC, a New Deal program to put young men to work during the Depression. They helped develop this large park in Pickens County that many still enjoy.

Hiking to the top of Table Rock is a popular activity but incredibly strenuous. The hike is 3.6 miles each way! Stop by the visitor center if you have any questions. 

You can canoe, swim, fish, or walk along the Lakeside Trail if you want something less strenuous. Once a month, the park hosts an event featuring local bluegrass musicians.

3. Jones Gap State Park

A little north of Greenville sits a beautiful state park. At Jones Gap, visitors can hike, bird watch, swim in the Middle Saluda River, or view South Carolina’s tallest waterfall.

4. Caesar’s Head State Park

Also, visitors will discover Caesar’s Head State Park north of town. Known for their Hawk Watch in the fall months, guests can view birds migrating to South America for the winter months.

The park also offers numerous hikes with stunning waterfalls and swimming holes to enjoy in the summertime.

5. Bald Rock Heritage Preserve

If you are hiking Table Rock or Caesar’s Head, consider checking out Bald Rock Heritage Preserve. Located off 276, this is a neat stop off the side of the road. You will pull off 276 to park. 

After a long hike, this would be a relaxing spot for a picnic with scenic views. The Preserve is also a great place to watch a sunset. We visited one night before the sunset, and the kids had a blast exploring. 

FYI- the area has significant graffiti, but it was a neat touch.

6. Wildcat Wayside Mountain Bridge Wilderness Area

During our summer trip to Upstate SC, my husband’s friend suggested we check out this local wilderness area. Our group consisted of 8 adults and 9 kids, but the youngest were three. So we needed an outdoor activity that was toddler friendly.

The Wilderness area covers over 10,00 acres including parts of several state parks like Jones Gap. Our group enjoyed a short hike to a pretty waterfall. On another afternoon, the dads took all the kids to play in the swimming hole next to the falls. The kids had a blast!

7. Croft State Park

Croft State Park is in nearby Spartanburg, a town adjacent to Greenville. Guests love Croft State for its abundant mountain biking trails and fishing at Lake Tom Craig.

8. Fountain Inn , SC

Fountain is one of the small towns with easy access to Greenville. The Fountain Inn Museum offers the best way for guests to learn the history of the Upstate region. For instance, the museum teaches guests about the Indigenous people who called South Carolina home and the rich textile mill history and railroad development. This is an excellent stop for those who love to study local history.

Our kids love sports, but especially college sports. When we travel, we love to show them college towns and campuses. Clemson is an iconic college town known for their football program. Look at their athletic calendar while you are in town and try to catch a baseball or basketball game!

Pro-tip: Avoid Clemson on football weekends unless you have a ticket to the big game!

10. Lake Keowee

Lake Keowee is a popular destination for those who love watersports. It is ideal for fishing, boating, skiing and swimming. Explore the quaint town of Seneca while you are there!

Pro tip: Lakes in the South can be packed on the weekends in the summer! Aim for midweek or arrive early on the weekends.

Western North Carolina

Western NC is just a short scenic drive north of Greenville and offers many exciting opportunities. It is the perfect place for an excursion. Check out the best day trips to Western North Carolina. I have spent years exploring this region and I’m so excited to share my favorite spots.

11. Asheville

Asheville is a short drive north on I-26 out of Greenville. Asheville is a medium-sized city in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Known for its art scene, history, and local breweries, you will be glad you spent time in this beautiful city. 

For my history buffs, you must stop by the Biltmore Estate, a mansion built in the Gilded Era by the grandson of Cornelius Vanderbilt. The home is stunning, but the gardens and surrounding property are just as beautiful.

Spending time on the estate is one of my favorite activities in Asheville. I find the property to be serene and relaxing. Biltmore is also kid-friendly, and our kids love visiting the estate.

Asheville is bustling with breweries like Sierra Nevada, a minor league baseball team, delicious food, and a fun pinball museum. You won’t regret making a day trip to Asheville. I’ve spent a lot of time exploring Asheville and it is one of my favorite areas in the South- I know you will love it too!

12. Hendersonville

Hendersonville is a smaller community just south of Asheville on I-26. It is a quick and easy getaway for the day. My in-laws live here, so we’ve explored and love this community!

Main Street is the heart of town with great restaurants, locally owned shops, and delicious restaurants. Our favorite stops are always McFarland’s Bakery and Willow Hill Soap Company. In the summertime, my kids enjoy the scavenger hunt to find all the painted and decorated bears that dot town as fundraisers for local charities.

Hendersonville has an impressive collection of local wineries, and if you visit in the fall, definitely check out the apple farms.

13. Flat Rock

Flat Rock is a precious community next to Hendersonville known for its famous Flat Rock Playhouse. Check out their schedule to see if there are shows while you are in town.

For literary enthusiasts, you can visit the historic home of Carl Sandburg , part of the National Park Service. I suggest combining a day trip to Flat Rock and Hendersonville together.

14. Chimney Rock State Park

Chimney Rock is an iconic state park that grants visitors stunning views of the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. It is one of the best outdoor activities for guests who enjoy hiking, spectacular waterfalls, and scenic views.

Tip: To reach the rock, many guests take the stair route. Be aware- that there are 500+ stairs, so if you have mobility issues or travel with little kids, make sure the elevator works before you purchase tickets.

15. Lake Lure

Lake Lure is adjacent to Chimney Rock and is an excellent combination for nature lovers. You could spend the morning at the state park before moving over to a fun day on the water. You can rent a boat for the day or enjoy their small water park on the lake.

Lake Lure is a charming little community hidden in the Blue Ridge Mountains. We spent a weekend here recently, and I loved the feel of the community. Some excellent restaurants overlook the lake if you aren’t interested in water sports.

16. Blue Ridge Parkway

You can’t miss spending a little time exploring the Blue Ridge Parkway. The scenic path winds through the Appalachian mountains of North Carolina and Virginia. As you near Asheville, there are several entry points. I suggest mapping out your route beforehand and packing a picnic lunch!

17. columbia.

Just South of Greenville on I-26, guests can explore the state’s capital. Columbia offers an amazing zoo, the Columbia Museum of Art, and the South Carolina State Museum. Walk the beautiful campus of the University of South Carolina or catch a sporting event!

18. Congaree National Park

Named after the Congaree people, Congaree National Park is a hidden treasure nestled in the Southeast. Renowned for its extensive array of hardwoods, it offers a plethora of activities, making it an ideal destination for a day trip from Greenville (less than 2 hours). 

Opt for hiking, biking, canoeing, or kayaking to fill your adventurous day. In the wetlands, be prepared to encounter a couple of alligators.

Pro tip from a lifelong Southerner- If you’re still deciding on the optimal time to visit, contemplate spring or fall. Late summer can be exceptionally hot in the deep South.

19. The Beach

Although it would be a much longer day, you could drive to the beach. Hilton Head & Myrtle Beach are some of the most popular areas. Or you could visit Charleston for a day.

My advice- these are fantastic places to visit, and you will want more than one day here! I’ve visited all three and trust me you’ll want at least 2-4 days- one is just not enough.

The Greenville-Spartanburg Airport (GSP) is the closest and most convenient. Asheville’s airport is about an hour away but relatively small. Look into Charlotte’s airport if you need a larger airport.

Although Greenville’s tree-lined, trendy Main Street gets all the attention these days, the true advantage of the Upstate’s largest city is its’ close proximity to natural wonders. The picturesque Blue Ridge mountains, dozens of enchanting waterfalls , and a number of historical attractions all lie with an easy day’s drive. If you have the time, you will definitely want to venture outside of Main Street to explore a few of these mesmerizing natural sights. Below are 10 interesting daytrips, all within an easy hour drive of Greenville, SC.

Daytrip 1: Chimney Rock & Lake Lure

• Distance from Greenville: 1 hour
• Location: 431 Main St, Chimney Rock, NC 28720, Admission fee: $17 adult/$8 youth
• Highlights: Best mountain views in the region, home to the state’s second tallest waterfall, popular movie filming site
• Tip: Start off with a pastry and cup of joe at On the Rocks (Chimney Rock Village) prior to your hiking adventure

Chimney Rock State Park

Though located in North Carolina, Chimney Rock State Park is (rightfully so) extremely popular with both NC & SC tourists, especially those staying in the nearby cities of Asheville & Greenville. While admission is overpriced, the scenery is incredible and the trails well-maintained.

Challenge your lower body to a 500 step climb up to a uniquely shaped rock outcropping, or opt for a more relaxing elevator ride (44 steps still required) up the mountains (one of the few places in the world where you can do so!). No matter which route you take to get to the top, you are rewarded with the same standout view of the picturesque Blue Ridge region. On a clear day, the view stretches out for 75 miles, with Lake Lure and the Hickory Nut gorge forming a near picture-perfect backdrop for photos.

Hickory Nut Falls

The park is also home to one of the state’s largest waterfalls, the enchanting 404 foot wonder, Hickory Nut Falls. And fortunately, it does not take all that much effort to view this beauty. A simple 1 mile journey will lead you to this awe-inspiring natural wonder. After trekking up and down 1000 steps, this hike will feel like an absolute breeze – if anything a nice recovery period where you can cool down and replenish your water stores. On an interesting side note, this waterfall was featured in The Last of the Mohicans .

Chimney Rock Village

When your legs can’t take any more of a beating, head over to adjacent Chimney Rock Village for an afternoon of shopping and dining. Medina’s bistro is the place to refuel with a healthy veggie and protein packed wrap. Enjoy a local caffeine boost at the quirky On the Rocks coffeeshop. The village is home to quite the eclectic range of shops, many specializing in eccentric Bigfoot and Southern style souvenirs. Be sure to check out the general store featuring memorabilia an old time candy bar.

If you are a Dirty Dancing fan, you are sure to be impressed by the movie memorabilia around town. Huge fans of the Patrick Swayze 80’s classic will want to head a few miles outside town to Lake Lure . Here, you can take a relaxing cruise around the lake and see the steps where Baby practiced her dance moves.

• Highlights: Biltmore estate, renowned foodie scene, beautiful mountain scenery, access to the Blue Ridge Parkway and many waterfalls
• Tip: Get an early start to your day to beat the hefty tourist crowds. The Parkway and hikes are usually empty in the morning.

Asheville is a fun and convenient day trip from Greenville, and as an added bonus, the drive over is incredibly scenic. Like Greenville, Asheville has been making headlines in recent years for its’ diverse foodie scene . In fact, numerous foodie hotspots which originated in Asheville can now be found in Greeneville i.e. Biscuit Head, White Duck Taco, Tupelo Honey. These restaurants are all great, however, there are so many other local establishments to check out.

Chai Pani specializes in Indian Street fare. Vinnie’s is the place to go for authentic Italian meal and NY style pizza. And although not as highly touted, The Blue Ridge Artisanal Buffet at the luxurious Omni Grove Park Inn offers a terrific brunch buffet and the views are simply breathtaking. Asheville is definitely a foodie haven, with everything from farm-to-table, to Southern BBQ, to diverse ethnic fare on the menu. Other must try’s include Andaaz (amazing Indian buffet), Apollo Flame (the best Greek salad), and Nine Mile (unique Caribbean fare). Consider a foodie tour to enjoy the full spectrum of Asheville food offerings.

A gateway to natural wonders

Food aside, the real highlight of Asheville is its’ prime location within the beautiful Blue Ridge mountains. From here, you can drive a portion of the Blue Ridge Parkway (rated America’s favorite drive), access hundreds of miles of hiking trails, and enjoy over 200 waterfalls throughout Transylvania county, aptly nicknamed “Land of the waterfalls.” Here is my list of 10 incredible waterfalls in Western North Carolina .

Of course, the city offers a number of amenities of its’ own. You are probably familiar with the Biltmore Estate , built in the late 1800’s by George Vanderbilt, grandson of railroad tycoon Cornelius Vanderbilt. The extravagant 35 room home (the largest private residence in the US) is open for tours. The mansion was built at the cost of 6 million dollars, which today is the equivalent of 1.6 billion! When the holidays roll around, you can reserve your spot for a winter sleigh ride around the gorgeous property.

Asheville, known for its’ thriving art scene, has earned the nickname “The San Francisco of the East.” There are many galleries to check out during your visit. Grovewood Village (near the Omni), the Folk Art Center (on the Blue Ridge Parkway), and Woolworth Walk (downtown) are must-sees. Other must-visits within the city include the Asheville Pinball Museum (play over 75 pinball and arcade machines unlimited for just 15 bucks), Battery Park Book Exchange (pick up your next classic while enjoying a glass of champagne), the North Carolina Arboretum (featuring a world-class bonsai garden), and the Asheville Botanical Gardens (a quiet nature escape away from the tourist herds).

Daytrip 3: Dupont State Forest

• Distance from Greenville: 1 Hour
• Location: Free side street and lot parking. Park at the High Falls lot (89 Buck Forest Road, Cedar Mountain, NC 28718)
• Highlights: 3 incredible waterfalls accessible via a moderate hike
• Tip: Visit during the off-season for ease of finding parking

Dupont State Forest is one of the most worthwhile daytrips for waterfall lovers. On this 2.5 mile out-and-back trek, you will get to see 3 stunning waterfalls, as well as a historic covered bridge. Known as the Triple Falls trailhead, you will get to awe at the beauty of not one, but 3 incredible falls. Along the moderate trek, you will come across 125 foot tall Triple Falls, 125 foot High Falls, and 20 foot Hooker Falls which makes up for what it lacks in height with its’ impressive width and volume.

The trail is moderate without too much elevation gain – a real bang-for-your-buck experience considering how little effort is required to see 3 natural wonders. This trail is especially gorgeous in fall when a colorful palette of golden hues paint the backdrop. And, if you can brave the often crisp and icy winters, this really is a time to enjoy the solitude of a quiet forest and obtain uninterrupted photos of nature at its’ best.

On a side note, Wintergreen Falls is another beauty in the same forest. The trailhead is located about 5 miles away and is worth considering if you have the time. This gem is just 25 feet tall, although the lush forest setting is spectacular.

Dining options are limited. Take a side trip to Brevard , home to a charming Main St (Quotations Cafe is a cute local coffeeshop). Otherwise fill up before you leave at one of these great Greenville breakfast establishments .

Daytrip 4: Oconee County

• Distance from Greenville: About an hour depending on which part of the county you visit.
• Highlights: Home to some of the most spectacular waterfalls in the state
• Tip: Grab a quick breakfast in Greenville before taking off as dining is limited in the area.

Oconee, the westernmost county in South Carolina, was recently voted one of the “50 last great places in the world” by National Geographic Magazine. This region is a true oasis for outdoor types. Lake Jocassee and Lake Keowee are both popular destinations for water lovers. The Lake Jocassee boat tour is popular with tourists seeking a leisurely, no-stress vacation activity.

Oconee County Waterfalls

If you are up for more of an endurance challenge, simply choose from the long list of hikes in the region – Oconee State Park is a great place to start. The most stunning waterfalls to add to your must-see list include Yellow Branch (best viewed after a major rain storm), King’s Creek (easy hike to a stunning 50 foot waterfall), Issaqueena Falls (easy 5 minute walk to a 200 foot cascading beauty), and Station Cove Falls (a stunning secluded stepped waterfall).

And, if you are up for a more intense adventure, consider a whitewater rafting trip down the Chattooga River.

Daytrip 5: Caesar’s Head State Park/Wildcat Branch Falls

• Distance from Greenville: 50 min
• Location: 8155 Geer Hwy, Cleveland, SC 29631
• Highlights: The tallest waterfall in South Carolina, amazing fall foliage
• Tip: Arrive at the trailhead early in the morning, preferably during the off-season. This is a very popular place and parking is extremely limited

Caesars Head State Park

Caesar’s Head State Park is one of the gems of the Upstate region – a definite must-visit if you love nature and hiking. The highlight here is the moderately challenging 2.2 mile hike to Raven Cliff Falls, a gorgeous 350 foot waterfall viewable via an observation deck. It’s worth the challenge (if you are up to it) to see the tallest waterfall in the state. Views are a bit far off in the distance, however, the leafy scenery surrounding the falls (particularly during the vibrant fall season) is what really sets this waterfall apart.

The great thing about Caesars is that you do not necessarily have to be a hiker to enjoy this park. First off, the drive over is stunning, particularly in autumn as the colorful hues of the fall dominate the landscape. Second, there is a gorgeous overlook (just a short walk required) where you can enjoy 360 panoramic views of the area. Other activities for non-hikers include fishing and picnicking.

Wildcat Branch Falls

About 20 minutes into the drive to Caesars, you will come across an amazing roadside waterfall. At a mere 30 feet, Wildcat Branch Falls is not all that tall, however, the water flow is always extremely strong. Plus, it’s one of the few waterfalls which requires zero effort to see. This is a quick detour directly on the route near the small town of Cleveland. You will see a small parking lot and loads of people around if it’s a nice day.

Again, this area is a bit secluded, and thus, quite limited in terms of dining options. Filling up on a quick breakfast in Greenville prior to leaving is your best bet. Sully’s Steamers is an excellent local bagel shop where you can order all sorts of flavorful bagel sandwiches with lots of healthier veggie options. Plus they serve Methodical coffee – a local roaster which has won numerous awards.

On your return route, stop by for a quick lunch in Travelers Rest, a small community located directly on the route. Sidewall is a popular local’s favorite for pizza. Also, a section of the popular Swamp Rabbit trail begins here. A walk or ride along this paved biking/walking route is a fun & scenic way to get in a bit more exercise.

Daytrip 6: Spartanburg

• Location: Start off at The Crepe Factory (137 W Main St, Spartanburg, SC 29306)
• Highlights: Hub City bookshop, Hatcher Garden preserve, the only contemporary art museum in the Upstate
• Tip: Check the lineup for upcoming shows, concerts, and events at the Chapman Cultural Center

Spartanburg is an interesting daytrip from Greenville, particularly for history buffs. The town is most well-known for its’ role in the Revolutionary War. In fact, the town’s name arises from the Spartan regiment, a local militia who helped win the Battle of Cowpens. Admission to the Cowpens National Battlefield site is free.

Similar to Greenville, the charming downtown is a hotspot for local dining and boutique shopping. The Crepe Factory is a great place to start off your morning. Afterwards take a stroll down the tree-lined Main Street and admire the historical architecture and various boutique shops. The Tea and Spice Exchange offers an amazing array of loose leaf tea and spice blends. Stop by Little River Roasting Co for a quality espresso on the patio and then browse through local and national treasures at Hub City Books, one of the region’s few independent bookstores.

The Chapman Cultural Center houses a theater, a regional history museum, and an art museum. Both the art and history museum are free, so a great value if you are looking to keep your trip budget friendly.

Vintage Warehouse is a must stop for all treasure hunters. Dozens of independent vendors are on-site in this massive space. Lots of great finds here including quality furniture, fantastic art, and regional specialties.

If getting lost in nature is more your thing, head over to Hatcher Garden and Woodland Preserve for a tranquil stroll around this woodsy nature preserve. Avid hikers will want to venture out a bit further to Croft State Park, home to over 10 miles of trails.

Daytrip 7: Jones Gap State Park

• Highlights: Relatively uncrowded, gorgeous maintained trails, beautiful fall foliage
• Tip: Save this hike for the fall – the foliage is spectacular!

Jones Gap and Caesars Head are located in the same region, so if you are not overly tired, you can save some time and visit both on the same day. However, as the hike to Raven Falls is a bit exhausting, you may want to keep your hiking to a minimum and enjoy other recreational activities such as birdwatching, fishing, and picnicking. Combined the two parks comprise a massive 11,000 acre wilderness area known as the Mountain Bridge wilderness area.

While the hike to Rainbow Falls draws the majority of visitors to Jones Gap State Park, this is a very strenuous trek which involves over 1000 feet of elevation gain. If completely busting your butt does not sound like a fun vacation activity, you may want to consider one of the park’s easier, but still rewarding trails. A great, but sadly often overlooked alternative is the hike to Jones Gap falls, a beautiful secluded 1 mile hike to a pretty 50 foot waterfall which cascades down a rocky staircase.

Bird watching is popular here as is the Annual Hawk Watch. Instead of spending extra money in Greenville, considering bringing with a picnic and enjoying the natural surroundings. For breakfast on your way out, consider stopping by Tandem Creperie in Travelers Rest. Although always crowded, this local gem serves great coffee (from local Carolina roaster Counter Culture) and both sweet and savory crepes. Plus, the patio is quite nice during the warmer season.

Daytrip 8: Table Rock State Park/Twin Falls

• Distance from Greenville: 30-45 minutes
• Highlights: Easy hiking, terrific fall foliage, pretty waterfalls in the region
• Tip: Consider a quick detour to Bald Rock Heritage preserve, a quick roadside stop featuring an overlook with tremendous views of the mountains

Picken’s County is another easy daytrip which offers much bang-for-your-buck. Located just a half hour away, the picturesque country drive – far away from the Greenville tourist congestion- alone makes a daytrip to Pickens worthy of consideration. The region is home to numerous outdoor based attractions, and thus, is a winning choice for nature enthusiasts.

Start your day off at Coyote Coffee Company in downtown Pickens. This cute local shop serves delicious coffee and pastries, along with light breakfast fare. After your caffeine boost, take a quick walk downtown and check out the antique shops.

Table Rock State Park

Table Rock State Park is one of the more popular parks in the region. The arduous climb up Table Rock is only suitable for the most dedicated hikers. However, the Carrick Creek Nature trail is a nice casual and scenic stroll for walkers and nature lovers. This short 1 mile trail features several small waterfalls. The hike is tranquil and quiet and you will likely hear nothing but the soothing sounds of the creek.

Twin Falls is another must-see while in the vicinity. This beautiful double waterfall is one of the most mesmerizing in the state. Best of all, a simple 20 min nature walk is all that is required to see this marvel of nature. Twin Falls is an easy 10 mile detour from Table Rock.

Other attractions to check out include the Pickens County Museum of art, B Well Honey Shop, and Finders Keepers Antiques. The Pumpkintown General Store is located right on the route. This is a great place to take a little break, browse around, and perhaps grab a quick bite to eat. Along the way, Bald Rock is a quick scenic break to stretch your legs.

Daytrip 9: Campbells Covered Bridge/Poinsett Bridge/Pleasant Ridge County Park

• Distance from Greenville : About a half hour
• Highlights: Beautiful waterfall at Pleasant Ridge, the last covered bridge in the state, scenic drive
• Tip: Start your day at Pleasant Ridge County Park (before it gets too hot and crowded), then Campbell’s Covered Bridge, and finally Poinsett

Pleasant Ridge County Park

This peaceful park is located just 20 min or so outside of Greenville and just a short detour from the 2 bridges. A beautiful half mile nature trail leads you to Pleasant Ridge Falls. The 6 mile JFA trail is also popular with hikers as well as mountain bikers.

Campbell’s Covered Bridge

A handful of interesting historical sights are scattered throughout the Upstate. Two of the most interesting make for a nice little relaxing daytrip from Greenville. Campbell’s Covered bridge is the last remaining covered bridge in the state. This is a beautiful place for photography, especially during the peak of fall and following a winter snowstorm. You will likely see lots of couples out and about taking engagement photos. Also, the serene natural backdrop is perfect for family photos.

Poinsett Bridge

Poinsett Bridge is another interesting historical landmark to add to your bucket list. This fascinating piece of architecture was built in 1820 and still stands completely intact as the oldest bridge in South Carolina. The bridge was originally built as part of a road which ran from Columbia to Saluda mountain. The 14 foot Gothic arch and secluded creepy setting gives the bridge a mysterious otherworldly vibe. Supposedly the bridge is haunted, which makes this detour all the more interesting during the Halloween season.

The 2 bridges are about 20 min apart. The mountainous scenery in between is quite beautiful. The drive is relaxing with barely a hint of traffic. Along the route, you can test out some southern boiled peanuts and pick up some fresh seasonal fruit & produce. If you are looking for a bite, the small community of Travelers Rest offers a number of popular eateries. Tandem serves delicious crepes and excellent coffee from local North Carolina roaster, Counter Culture.

Daytrip 10: South Carolina Botanical Gardens

• Location: 150 Discovery Ln, Clemson, SC 29634, Hours: Sunrise-sunset, 7 days a week
• Highlights: Over a dozen beautifully maintained gardens, an impressive geology museum
• Tip: Save this one for the cooler season!

South Carolina Botanical Garden at Clemson

The South Carolina Botanical Garden is an overlooked gem which is worthy of a look if you are seeking more to do in the Upstate. While it wouldn’t necessarily be number one on my list, it’s a good add on if you have the time. Located just 40 minutes outside of Greenville, this is an easily doable daytrip for nature lovers. The garden is located on the campus of Clemson University and is open to the public free of charge 365 days a year.

The massive 295 acre space includes a variety of gardens and nature trails. Over a dozen unique gardens include a desert garden, a butterfly garden, and a flower display garden. The Bob Campbell Geology Museum houses more than 10,000 rocks and minerals.

Keowee-Toxaway State Park

After spending a few hours at the garden, hop in the car and proceed 20 minutes to Lake Keowee. Keowee-Toxaway State Park is a beautiful place for a boating adventure (rentals available). For hikers, the Natural Bridge nature trail is a peaceful walk through isolated nature, complete with small waterfalls and creek crossings. At just 1 mile and no more than moderate intensity, this is a great choice for hikers of all abilities.

For a delicious lunch, I recommend a stop at Todaro’s Pizza. The owners are Clemson alumni and the food here is quite delicious. Prices are super affordable and they offer an all-you-can-eat lunch buffet for under ten bucks. And, don’t leave without treating yourself to some garlic knots!

How to spend one day in Greenville, SC

There are so many great ways to fill your day or overnight trip to Greenville, South Carolina, and so many fun things to do. Here are the top things to do in the city.

Explore downtown Greenville

The city of Greenville has spent many years developing its downtown into an area that its residents and guests can enjoy exploring and generally just hanging out in. We truly have one of the best downtowns in America for our tree-lined Main Street full of shops and great dining options.

Of all the ways to spend part of a day in Greenville, this is one of my very favorites. I really don’t think there’s a better way to explore the heart of Greenville than to walk around the downtown area.

Stop by a locally owned coffee shop or restaurant, or shop in one of the unique stores.

Downtown Greenville is becoming quite the foodie destination , thanks to local restaurateurs. You’ll come across some chain restaurants in the area too, but you’ll discover that Greenville loves its homegrown restaurants.

Try a Greenville walking tour

Why not make exploring downtown Greenville more fun and rewarding by taking a leisurely walking tour? This way, you can maximize your experience of the area. Exploring a new city through a walking tour is one of the best ways to discover its past, see famous landmarks, and immerse yourself in the local vibe.

If you’re visiting Greenville between May and October, check out the Saturday Market . 

Start your morning off bright and early at the market located on Main Street from 8 a.m. to noon, situated at the corner of McBee Ave and Main St. Shop away along Main Street to find all kinds of goodies!

Explore the offerings of more than 75 vendors selling local produce, flowers, food, and other hand-crafted goods. Everything offered has to be grown or made within 100 miles of Greenville.

Mice on Main

This is a fun one for those traveling with kids. Hunt through Main Street in downtown Greenville on the lookout for nine bronze mice. Check out the clues on the official Greenville tourism website to help in your scavenger hunt.

Falls Park on the Reedy

While taking in the sights of downtown Greenville, why not stop by Spill the Beans for a tasty coffee beverage or ice cream? Then explore one of the most popular attractions in town, Falls Park on the Reedy.

The picturesque Reedy River Falls, in the heart of downtown Greenville, is proudly celebrated in the name of this park. The 354-foot Liberty Bridge is a unique architectural feature that has made it one of the most popular spots in the city center.

Take a stroll to one of the nearby restaurants, or better yet bring your picnic and savor it in one of the picturesque spots alongside Reedy River. I mean, if the weather is good. And it very often is.

The park is free for guests to explore and is open every day.

Greenville Zoo

For all the animal lovers out there, a visit to Greenville Zoo is an absolute must while you’re in town. It’s one of my favorite small zoos ever.

I am deeply inspired by their staunch commitment to conservation, which includes offering a grant that funds programs for the protection of wildlife.

Enjoy free parking at two nearby lots, as well as the added convenience of proximity to Cleveland Park and the Swamp Rabbit Trail.

Swamp Rabbit Trail

Stretching 22 miles from Greenville to Travelers Rest, South Carolina, the historic Swamp Rabbit Trail is perfect for cycling and hiking. On the weekends, taking a jog or bike ride along The Swamp Rabbit Trail is a popular pastime in Greenville.

If you need a mid-hike or mid-ride pick-me-up, there are plenty of places to stop for refreshments, from snacks and coffee to ice cream treats.

A lot of the Swamp Rabbit Trail follows the Reedy River, the same river that flows through the center of Greenville and Falls Park.

Okay, let’s address the elephant in the room. The name of Swamp Rabbit Trail. We also have an East Coast Hockey League team called the Greenville Swamp Rabbits. I swear I am not making that up. Evidently, the swamp rabbit is native to this region. Why we think that means we have to name a bunch of stuff after this creature, I really couldn’t tell you. Nevertheless, here we are.

Greenville County Museum of Art

When I travel, one of my favorite activities is visiting art museums. From the Met in New York City to the Louvre in Paris, I am always captivated by these beautiful spaces and the artwork they display.

The Greenville County Museum of Art has one of the best collections of American art I’ve had the joy of seeing in a regional museum. This includes the largest public collection of Andrew Wyeth watercolors (swoon!).

The museum is conveniently situated at Heritage Green in downtown Greenville. Heritage Green is a cultural campus that includes,

• the GCMA (of course)
• the main branch (Hughes) of the Greenville County Library System
• the Greenville Theatre
• Children’s Museum of the Upstate,
• Sigal Music Museum, and the
• Upcountry History Museum.

Admission to the Greenville County Museum of Art is free. There is a small charge to park in the Heritage Green parking lot during normal business hours on weekdays.

Take in a show at the Peace Center

Another one of the crown jewels of downtown Greenville is the Peace Center , a renowned performing arts facility. The Peace Center is home to Greenville’s orchestra and chorale, but it also regularly hosts renowned artists from various genres and Broadway productions.

The roster of artists that have taken the stage includes The Beach Boys, Chicago, renowned soprano Renee Fleming, and multiple Tony-award-winning Audra McDonald along with violin virtuoso Joshua Bell.

From Hamilton to The Lion King and Wicked , the Peace Center’s theatre calendar is packed with phenomenal Broadway shows that draw people from all over the area.

Not only is the Peace Center a premier venue, but they are also determined to reduce its environmental footprint. In fact, many believe that this is the first zero-waste-to-landfill arts facility.

Attend a Greenville Drive Game

Even if performing arts don’t appeal to everyone, surely baseball is something everyone can get behind.

If you’re visiting Greenville, South Carolina, during baseball season, I encourage you to check out the Greenville Drive playing at Fluor Field, even if you don’t usually like going to sporting events.

The Greenville Drive is a High-A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox, and they have one of the best minor league ballparks in the U.S. Seriously, I love it. They even have their own Green Monster like at Fenway in Boston.

Where to stay in Greenville, South Carolina

Whether you’re looking for an intimate stay or something more glamorous, there are plenty of options when it comes to finding the perfect place to stay in Greenville. Here are some of the best hotels Greenville has to offer.

Try the lovely Westin Poinsett Greenville in the heart of the city. It’s a AAA Four Diamond hotel and offers pet-friendly accommodations.

Grand Bohemian Lodge Greenville   is one of Greenville’s newest hotels. It’s just a few minutes’ walk from the center of downtown and the Peace Center.

Aloft Greenville Downtown offers a great location along with gym facilities and an outdoor pool.

Hampton Inn Greenville includes free hot breakfast and is just 15 minutes from Greenville Spartanburg International Airport.

When to visit Greenville, South Carolina

One of the most important things to consider when planning a trip to Greenville is deciding on the best time of year to visit.

Greenville weather

For the weather, visiting in late spring might be a great time, or into fall is also good.

If you struggle with allergies, early spring is probably not a good time to visit. And late summer can bring heavy storms that spin off from hurricane weather on the South Carolina coast. The middle of summer is just too hot and humid in my opinion.

The coldest and most disagreeable winter weather in Greenville typically comes in January and February. This is when the potential for snow and/or ice is highest.

Greenville festivals

Greenville, South Carolina, offers a lot in the way of festivals and special events. Choose to visit Greenville in May or October if you want to participate in one of the city’s signature events, Artisphere or Fall for Greenville.

Other great seasonal events and activities include:

• U.Day (October), Christmas Carol Sing and Lighting Ceremony (Friday a week after Thanksgiving), and Living Gallery (Easter Weekend) at Bob Jones University
• Music by the Lake free summer live music concert series at Furman University

Paris Mountain State Park

For the more active visitors to Greenville, Paris Mountain State Park is an excellent option.

Paris Mountain is one of 16 South Carolina State Parks built by the Civilian Conservation Corps, and it’s on the National Register of Historic Places. There are more than 15 miles of hiking and biking trails rated from easy to strenuous in the park. It has also become a top camping destination in the Greenville area.

Another favorite Upstate South Carolina park is the very popular Table Rock State Park.

The top things to do at Table Rock State Park include,

• Climbing Table Rock (of course!)
• Hike Lakeside Trail
• Enjoy live bluegrass music at “Music on the Mountain”

Here are nine options for day trips that introduce visitors to upstate South Carolina and the western North Carolina mountains. Each jaunt can be accomplished in 2 hours or less. Some shorter trips are easily combined for a full day’s excursion, or you can elect to divide your day between Greenville and a nearby destination. 1. Travelers Rest

Approximately 30 minutes north of Greenville , in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Travelers Rest is an ideal spot to spend a few hours, or an entire day. A well-known destination for avid golfers, Cherokee Valley Golf Club offers the kind of fast greens and stunning views that can quickly become addictive.

Whether or not golf is your jam, be sure to indulge in some wine and moonshine through the tours and tastings available at Eagle Mountain Vineyards and Winery and Copperhead Distillery .

Pro Tip: For runners, cyclists, and walkers, Travelers Rest is where the 26-mile-long Swamp Rabbit Trail begins or ends.

2. Charlotte

Greenville has everything anyone could possibly want, without the congestion of a large metropolis. But if you need a big city fix, Charlotte , North Carolina, is approximately 2 hours away. There are enough museums, restaurants, and attractions to make your head spin. Here are two unique attractions well worth spending an hour and a half to 2 hours exploring.

You don’t have to be a racing fan to lose yourself for a couple of hours at the NASCAR Hall of Fame . The 150,000-square-foot museum tells NASCAR’s story through interactive exhibits, racing simulators, authentic artifacts, and much more.

History buffs will find the Levine Museum of the New South , a post-Civil War history museum, both fascinating and disturbing. Exhibits include “Cotton Fields to Skyscrapers” tracing Charlotte-area history, and Good Samaritan Hospital chapel, one of the first Black hospitals in the South. A Civil Rights-era segregated lunch counter presents personal accounts from local protesters.

It takes just over 2 hours to reach the charming western North Carolina mountain town of Sylva. The scenic drive that brings you there is a sweet promise of remarkable things to come.

Upon arrival, your eyes will immediately zoom in on the much-photographed historic courthouse-turned-Jackson County Library on the hill above the town. And it only gets better.

Whether you plan to hike, fly fish, shop, or simply drink in the natural beauty all around you, Sylva and the surrounding area offer a peaceful, picturesque place to play or simply chill.

4. Pendleton

The quaint, friendly town of Pendleton is a 30-minute drive from Greenville. It lies 4 miles from the college town of Clemson, but it might as well exist in another time and place. The entire town is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Featuring a charming town square, Pendleton is a treasure trove of historic buildings where businesses thrive, and homes open their doors for guided tours. Immersing yourself in the rich history of Pendleton is as easy as walking down the main street.

Stroll the town, enjoying the architecture and shop for unique handmade items. Pendleton has an impressive selection of eateries and watering holes: some first-rate barbecue, a craft brewery, a rum distillery serving up creative cocktails at happy hour, and more.

Located just west of Interstate 26 between Spartanburg and Asheville — and a 50-minute drive from Greenville — Landrum, South Carolina, combines stunning views of the Blue Ridge Mountains with a generous dose of retail therapy. If antiquing is your pleasure, you’ve come to the right place.

Hunt for treasures among Landrum’s charming antique and specialty shops. Then take a break for a snack or meal at one of the town’s popular eateries. You can spend a half or full day in Landrum , depending on the comfort of your shoes and your budget.

Pro Tip: Do make time on your way to or from Landrum to stop at the 1820 Poinsett Bridge, the oldest in South Carolina. The 130-foot stone structure sports a striking 14-foot gothic arch at it’s center. And the entire bridge is alleged to be haunted. Also worth a slight detour is Campbell’s Covered Bridge, the only one of its kind in the state.

6. Lake Jocassee

If you’re longing for a day on or near the water, surrounded by mountains, wildlife, and peaceful places to relax, Lake Jocassee has it all. A 1 hour and 45 minute drive will bring you to the most crystal clear man-made lake in South Carolina. There you can swim, canoe, kayak, or take a boat tour. If you’re a certified diver, explore the remains of the once-populated town at the bottom. Lake Jocassee Dive Shop , in nearby Salem, supplies information, equipment rentals, and dive tours.

The lake has few public access points. The best way to get there is via Devils Fork State Park. You’ll find the experience well worth the small entrance fee.

7. Table Rock State Park

One of South Carolina’s most awe-inspiring sights is located along scenic Highway 11, only 26 miles from Greenville. Table Rock is the centerpiece of Table Rock State Park located in the Blue Ridge Mountain foothills. According to Cherokee legend, this giant rock was the “dining table of the Gods.”

It’s a 3.5-mile steady uphill hike to the top of Table Rock, where you’ll be rewarded with a breathtaking view. Not up for a long vertical trek? You can still derive much enjoyment from the rock’s base, or from your car several miles away.

For a small park entrance fee, you can enjoy an entire day. Hike, picnic, or cool off in one of two lakes or an old fashioned swimming hole.

Pro Tip: If your timing is right, you can take in some live bluegrass music performed monthly at the Table Rock Lodge.

8. Do Go Chasing Waterfalls

Even better, they are located within, or on the way to, some of the destinations mentioned above.

Begin at Falls Park on the Reedy River in downtown Greenville. The 60-foot urban waterfall located in a peaceful, expansive green space invites you to admire its cascading waters from a bench along one of the paved walking paths, or from the center of Liberty Bridge.

Carrick Creek Falls may be 15 feet tall, but height isn’t everything. See for yourself when you encounter the scenic view near the beginning of a moderate 1.9-mile loop trail at Table Rock State Park.

The lower part of Wildcat Branch Falls is visible from the road. If you pull into the parking area, you can walk a short distance to admire the three waterfalls in the roadside park.

Twin Falls is located in Pickens County, 34 miles from Greenville. An easy quarter-mile-trek will lead you to an overlook of these stunning falls, or you can hike to the top for an even more spectacular view.

9. Your Rainy Day Option At BMW Manufacturing

Rain or shine, a visit to BMW Manufacturing , a 24-minute drive from Greenville, is an adventure not to be missed. Whether you are a high performance luxury car enthusiast or simply curious, an hour or two at the BMW campus will give you a close-up look at how some of the finest vehicles in the world are assembled.

Begin your visit at the Zentrum Museum . Delve into BMW’s past, present, and future through displays, an informative video on a continuous loop, and cars galore. Feast your eyes on the shiny number Pierce Brosnan drove as James Bond in Golden Eye , as well as many other famous and not-so-famous rides.

The museum is free and open to the public, but if you want to see the inner workings of BMW’s assembly, there is a charge for the hour-long guided tour .

From the can't-miss museums to the must-visit restaurants to the most epic mountain hikes, here is how to make the most of your short stay in Charlottesville

Day 1: Morning

10 a.m.:  As soon as you land at Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport, head to your hotel to stow your bags, or if you're lucky, check in early. Stay at the Westin Poinsett , a historic property in the heart of downtown that offers complimentary shuttle service to and from the airport. The hotel is with walking distance of restaurants, breweries, shops, galleries, and points of interest such as Falls Park on the Reedy and the Peace Center .

11 a.m.: Perk up with tea or coffee (try the lavender latte) and pastries from Methodical Coffee , a few blocks up Main Street. Then wander through downtown's dozens of unique shops and boutiques, including MAKE MADE  for one-of-a-kind handbags and jewelry made by local artisans, Vintage Now Modern  for antique and contemporary home furnishings, or GVL Soy Candle Co. for bath and body products — including a Greenville candle that makes a perfect souvenir. On Saturday from May to October, stop by TD Saturday Market on Main Street for cold-pressed juices and fresh-baked pastries and bread, plus seasonal products, fresh-cut flowers, small-batch candles, pottery, and custom furniture.

Day 1: Afternoon

12:30 p.m.: After spending some time shopping it's time for lunch. Both Passerelle Bistro , which serves French bistro fare, and Foxcroft Wine Co. , a retail shop and wine bar with a full-service restaurant, offer seating with views of the 32-acre Falls on the Reedy. After lunch, stroll along the walking trails to view landscaped gardens, public art installations, dramatic stonework, and the 355-foot suspension Liberty Bridge, the longest single-sided bridge in the Western Hemisphere. If traveling with little ones, make a stop at the whimsical, experiential Children's Garden at Linky Stone Park, which is tucked underneath the South Academy Street Bridge and features a colorful gingerbread cottage, a secret garden, and a geology wall comprised of local rocks and minerals.

2:30 p.m.: Rent a bike from Reedy Rides and pedal along the Prisma Health Swamp Rabbit Trail, a 22-mile multi-use greenway that winds by the Reedy River. Travel southeast for just over a mile to visit scenic Cleveland Park and the adjacent Greenville Zoo . Or travel north for 10 miles to downtown Traveler's Rest and its galleries, breweries, and shops. 6:30 p.m.: Grab pre-dinner drinks and snacks at UP on the Roof . Located on the top of the Embassy Suites in downtown, this appropriately named restaurant offers the city's best views and some of its best food and drink. The shareable snacks—think rabbit tacos, drunken mussels, and fried chicken lettuce wraps—are great for groups, and the drink menu includes local craft beer, wine on tap, and bottled cocktails.

Stay for dinner or opt for one of downtown's other great restaurants, like Jianna , an Italian trattoria meets oyster bar. For a more casual evening, opt for The Trappe Door , a moody basement bar with a rotating list of more than a dozen Belgian and Belgian-style beers on tap, plus five different varieties of moules-frites (mussels and fries), and house-made pork and cherry sausages. Families will enjoy Sidewall Pizza , with specialty and customizable pizzas with toppings such as prosciutto, Italian sausage, arugula, roasted red peppers, and Kalamata olives.

9 p.m.: Enjoy an evening of live music at one of several local venues. Downtown, Blues Boulevard Jazz hosts local and touring artists, while Rainer's Cafe and Bar offers an intimate spot for listening to a range of artists, from blues and soul to folk and Americana. Just a few miles up the road off Poinsett Highway, Radio Room hosts 20 shows a month featuring artists playing hip hop, indie rock, and EDM, plus trivia nights, karaoke, and other special events.

Day 2: Morning

9 a.m.: Fuel up for your second day in the city with a hearty breakfast. Downtown, Biscuit Head Greenville offers a menu of specialty biscuits and breakfast sandwiches (we highly recommend the filthy animal) and sweeter items like French toast. Another Asheville import, Tupelo Honey serves up Southern-style brunch classics like chicken and waffles, pancakes, and eggs Benedict. Or opt for lighter fare like a veggie quiche, oatmeal, or avocado toast at the Swamp Rabbit Cafe and Grocery .

10:30 a.m.: Weather permitting, head to one of the area's sprawling state parks. Just 5 miles from downtown, Paris Mountain State Park has 15 miles of hiking and cycling trails, plus four lakes with beach access and kayak and canoe rentals. To get a glimpse of a dramatic waterfall, try the 4-mile, out-and-back Raven Cliff Falls Trail at Caesars Head State Park . 25 miles northeast of downtown, Table Rock State Park offers over a dozen miles of hiking trails ranging from half-mile easy excursions to strenuous paths that wind through dense forest and over boulders to the mountain's 3,124-foot summit, plus two lakes with seasonal swimming access as well as kayak, canoe, and pedal boat rentals.

1 p.m: Head to Gather Greenville , a food hall on downtown's West End near Fluor Field. With stalls selling a wide range of delectable treats including Philly cheesesteaks, sushi, pizza, and Maine-inspired lobster rolls, everyone will be able to find something to eat. The pet-friendly space (weekdays only) also has a coffee shop and plenty of indoor and outdoor seating, ideal for large groups.

2:30 p.m.: After lunch, visit The Village of West Greenville , located just 2 miles to the west. The district is home to more than 60 shops and galleries, including the Greenville Center for the Creative Arts , which hosts art classes and meet and greets with artists. If traveling with kids, don't miss the Children's Museum of the Upstate , with three floors of interactive exhibits exploring music, nature, science, and design, plus an outdoor recreation area, an on-site cafe, a play pond for toddlers, and a climbing wall.

4:30 p.m.: Greenville is home to more than a dozen craft breweries, many of them offering on-site tastings and tours, plus live music, food trucks, patios, and yard games. Your first stop? The city's oldest, and family-run  Thomas Creek Brewery , known for its signature IPAs like the Class Five. Weekend events in Greenville, Spartanburg and Anderson: Zoo Fest, Skate Till Sunset, etc.

As May comes to a close, June ushers in the summer season and a whole new set of events in the Upstate.

The summer season in the Upstate brings a flurry of outdoor activities, from nature spa retreat events to scavenger hunts, family fun day events, a zoo fest, comedy shows, skate sessions, dance lessons, and veterans fishing events.

Here are a variety of ways you can bring in the summer in the Upstate

Greenville Zoo Fest

Grenville Zool Fest will occur on Saturday, June 1, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Zoo Fest is a fundraising event for the Greenville Zoo.

Adult admission is $30, child admission is $20, and ages 2 and under are free.

The first 100 tickets purchased will receive one free drink ticket.

Entry fees and stations throughout the zoo are credit card only.

Attendees will be able to view animals while enjoying a variety of live music and fun activities for the kids.

Activities included with admission: face painting, kids' crafts, Snapster photo booth, ambassador animal encounters, and keeper talks. Special guests include princesses from "Once Upon A Dream."

Food trucks and zoo concessions will offer a variety of food options for purchase. Additionally, beer, wine, and Pepsi products will also be available for sale.

Skate Till Sunset

Bring the family and come get your skate on at Skate Till Sunset at Unity Park , located at 320 S. Hudson St. in Greenville, on May 31 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.

General admission is $5. Click here to get tickets.

The event features a crew-style theme with synchronized skating, original skate routines, popular footwork, and freestyle sessions.

Each session will have a color and music theme.

The Safety Stretch will take place from 5:15 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., the warm-up skate session will take place from 5:30 p.m. to 6 p.m., and a dance break will occur from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Bollywood at Sunset

Bollywood at Sunset will take place on May 31 at Camperdown Plaza, starting at 6 p.m.

The event opens with a dance lesson and then features a dynamic DJ and light show, dancing, and a cash bar.

This fun-filled and family-friendly event brings a touch of India to downtown Greenville with music and dancing that have become a worldwide sensation.

This is a free event for the public.

Day Retreat in Anderson

Date night? Looking for something to do on a summer evening? Consider attending the Relax in Nature Day Retreat at Putney Farm located at 1624 Taylor Road in Honea Path on Saturday, June 1, from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The event features a harmonious blend of meditation, yoga, outdoor activities, herbal teas, woodland trails, a food forest, and an herbal farm.

If you're looking for a family-friendly event, consider attending a Free Family Fun Day presented by the Anderson County Office of Coroner Drug Education . The event will occur on Saturday, June 1, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Anderson Civic Center Parking Lot at 3027 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.

Honey Baked Ham, AnMed, Sosebee Mortuary, Mama Birria Crematory, Frios Gourmet Pops, and United Rentals of Belton sponsor the event.

It features a Ka' Jumpy Bus, a Fire Smokehouse, a firetruck, an ambulance, a helicopter, a foam cannon, a Gellyball Shooting Gallery, an Escape Room tent, Captain America, Scarlet Witch face painting, hair glitter, and Henna tattoos.

At the Palmetto Distillery Cocktails and Comedy Night, you can expect to see a lineup of talented local comedians who will have you in stitches with their hilarious stand-up routines. Ryan Rubin hosts the event.

The comedian lineup features Makenzie Manent, Daniel Dellanno, and Ray Ahfoo.

Lake Hartwell Green Pond Landing Veterans Fishing Event

Veterans, would you like to spend some time on the lake? Cast your rod and catch some fish at the second annual Take a Veteran Fishing event on June 1 at Green Pond Landing, 470 Green Pond Road.

Tactical Tungsten is a Veteran Owned Company that supplies Tungsten Fishing Weights, Accessories, and Apparel.

Veterans will be paired with boat captains, all of whom are donating their time to support this event. They will spend the morning fishing on Lake Hartwell out of Green Pond Landing and Event Center.

After a few hours of fishing, they will be treated to lunch and fellowship.

All veterans, boat captains, and volunteers will receive T-shirts and Challenge Coins to commemorate the event.

Veterans will also be supplied with rod/reel combos they will take home.
