How to reach Delta Air Lines customer service

Understand what delta customer service can help with, change your itinerary online, know which flights qualify for cash refunds, the bottom line.

In this era of flight changes and cancellations, airline customer service representatives have their work cut out for them.

If you’re planning to travel with Delta Air Lines and need support, here are key tips for successfully contacting Delta customer service and getting the help you need.

When you need help with your Delta flight, there are several ways to reach out.

Call Delta customer service on the phone

Want to speak with a live Delta agent about a reservation? Call the customer service number for Delta Air Lines at 800-221-1212. For SkyMiles-related questions, call 800-323-2323 and have your SkyMiles number handy.

Gold and Silver Medallion members get priority when calling either Delta customer service phone number. But Delta Platinum and Diamond Medallion members get top priority customer service. These top-tier elites can call the dedicated phone line found in the Contact Us section of the Fly Delta phone app or on the back of your membership card.

Tweet @Delta for help

If repetitive hold music isn’t your jam, then we recommend posting your question on Twitter and tagging Delta with the handle @Delta, or you can send a Twitter direct message to that account. You might reach the airline quicker by tweeting at it instead of calling it.

Chat live on an Apple or Android device

On the go? You can chat live with Delta on an Apple or Android device. Just go to the Need Help? page on delta.com and click on the “Message Us” button. A window will pop up inviting you to chat with a virtual assistant.

This can be helpful for addressing common problems like adding a SkyMiles number to a reservation or making other small changes. And it can be faster than waiting for a phone agent or social media representative.

If you have to cancel your Delta flight or request a refund, a customer service rep can be a lifesaver. Can’t or don’t want to select your seat online? A Delta rep can help with that, too. Plus, you can rely on Delta customer service for any question not easily answered on their website — be it about baggage allowances or SkyMiles redemptions.

If you used SkyMiles to book a flight on a SkyTeam partner airline, you can call Delta to get the record locator for your ticket that will let you select your seat or manage your booking directly through the other airline.

However, calling isn’t the only way to get specific issues resolved.

Most changes and cancellations can be made online (see section below).

To file a baggage claim, use this online form .

To request miles from a trip or a partner activity, log in to your SkyMiles account and fill out a mileage credit request form.

To provide general feedback or to fill out a complaint, go to Feedback & Complaints .

Gone are the days when calling the airline was the only way to make changes to your itinerary. Delta supports most changes and cancellations through its website and app. Here’s how:

Locate the confirmation number in your reservation email and enter it at Delta.com to pull up the booking. Alternatively, you can navigate to the “My Trips” section in your Delta SkyMiles account and click on the trip you’d like to change.

Click on the red “Modify Flight” button in the top right corner.

Then, you’ll be given a choice of whether you would like to change the flight or cancel. Select the “Start Flight Change” option.

This change screen option shows all the flights included in the particular reservation; you’ll need to select the flight or flights you wish to change by checking the box next to the flight.

Click “Find New Flights” to advance to the next page.

At this step, all of your new flight options will appear and you'll select the flight you’d like to change it to and the amount you paid for the existing ticket will be applied to the cost of the new ticket price. You will either have to pay the balance as usual or you’ll receive a refund or an eCredit for the fare difference depending on the type of ticket originally booked.

For questions about Delta Vacations, visit this page . For baggage policies, this page may be of help.

» Learn more: Which Delta Air Lines credit card should you get?

If you want to cancel a nonrefundable ticket after the 24-hour grace period, you won’t get a refund to your original form of payment, but you will get an eCredit you can apply toward a future flight . If your new flight costs more, you’ll have to pay the difference in ticket price.

If you want to change or cancel a flight originating in the U.S. that you booked with SkyMiles, you can do so without fees.

To cancel or change a Delta flight, log in to your SkyMiles account, go to My Trips, select a flight you wish to cancel and click on “Modify Flights” at any point before your flight. In some cases, you’ll have to call (with basic economy tickets, for example). But in most cases, you should be able to change or cancel your flight online or in the Fly Delta app.

No matter the question, you should be able to find answers if you search online or call the airline for help.

Thanks to a no-fee change policy, even flight changes and cancellations can be done on the website without having to speak to anyone, and e-credits are issued automatically.

Still, Delta reps are just a phone call or text message away in case of more complicated requests. For less urgent questions, head to Twitter.

The Best Way To Reach Customer Service at the Major Airlines

Reaching an airline’s customer service representative used to mean calling a 10-digit number and waiting on hold for what seemed like an eternity. These days, you have more ways to get help from a particular carrier.

In this article, I’ll show you how to reach customer service for several major U.S. air carriers: by phone, online, on social media and through mobile apps.

That last avenue can be especially helpful when it comes to rebooking your flight in a crunch.

“You want to use the app to try to rebook yourself, because that gets you to the front of the line and is the most efficient way for you to find another routing,” says money expert Clark Howard .

Airline Customer Service: How To Reach Delta, Southwest & More

Whether you’re trying to rebook a flight, manage a missed connection or find lost luggage, contacting your airline can be a pain. To help you, I’ve rounded up the major airlines below with links that will take you right where you need to go.

Final Thoughts

The major airlines, as is the case in many industries these days, aren’t immune to having to react publicly and quickly to customer complaints.

Clark, who at one time owned a very successful travel agency, says reaching out online to airline customer service can yield fast results.

“The thing to know is that if you have a dispute with anything involving travel, they are monitoring social media like crazy,” Clark says. “I’d post on social media.”

Having trouble getting through to Delta? You're not alone

Zach Honig

Throughout the pandemic, airline call center agents have had to deal with unprecedented flight cancellations and reservation changes, leading to hours-long hold times, if customers were able to get through at all. As we explain in this post , we've generally had success reaching a Delta agent at 1-800-323-2323, but that isn't the case right now.

Reader Tom S. contacted TPG to share his experience this week, and other Delta customers have also reached out to us, and posted on various social media platforms, about a current inability to reach a Delta agent over the phone. Of the three largest U.S. airlines, Delta appears to be the only carrier currently experiencing severe call center issues — calls placed to American as an Executive Platinum elite and United as a Premier 1K member were answered right away.

As for Delta, I've made many attempts to contact the airline myself, most of which resulted in the following prerecorded message:

Due to extremely high call volume, we are unable to answer your call. If you need to travel within the next week, please try your call again later, or message us from Delta.com/needhelp or by clicking the "Message Us" button in the "More" section of the Fly Delta app.

Several TPG colleagues continue to hear the same message when they call, though Delta Platinum and Diamond elites on the team have been able to request a call-back, with wait times of between 42 minutes and two hours. TPG's Zach Griff, meanwhile, was offered a call-back time of 50 minutes when calling his elite number, even though he didn't enter his SkyMiles number, so it's clear that "your mileage may vary" here.

Luckily, we've landed on a few workarounds, that even work for non-elites. Members of our team were able to get through without any wait at all by calling one of Delta's international reservations numbers – such as for the UK – or by calling its number for group reservations.

While agents are dedicated to assisting customers traveling in a party of 10 or more, I spoke with a very friendly group reservations agent who was more than willing to assist with an individual reservation. I was also able to get the option of a call-back when calling the regular reservations line, 1-800-323-2323, by selecting the option to make a new reservation and providing an origin, destination and flight date the very next day. If you aren't able to reach an agent through the UK or US group line, that's an option to consider as well.

delta airlines international travel phone number

It seems that the current call center issues are related to a staffing shortage, after the carrier asked agents to take a leave of absence in an effort to control costs. In an internal memo to employees that was viewed by TPG, Tori Forbes-Roberts — the airline's VP of reservations sales and customer care — asked agents to volunteer to come back to work. "The simple fact is we need 2,000 more people back on the roster in June and July in order to better deliver on the Delta Difference for our customers," she explained.

As Forbes-Roberts explained, due to distancing protocols in place at a variety of call centers, agents may be required to work from home for the time being, including those based near Cincinnati, Dallas and Salt Lake City. According memo, Delta also plans to reassign some group sales agents, given the lack of demand for group travel, and other specialists may be answering "core customer" calls as well.

A Delta spokesperson confirmed the move:

As Delta continues to manage through the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, our Reservations and Sales team is working diligently to serve our customers. Many of our specialists are returning from voluntary leaves of absence next week and Delta is expanding the training and capability of all specialists to be able to better serve the needs of any customer. We are also working to adjust and enhance technology to further support our specialists and continue to enhance our self-service options available on delta.com and the Fly Delta App. We appreciate our customers' patience and apologize for any inconvenience some may be experiencing.

While nobody likes giving an airline a ring to make important flight changes only to hear "we are unable to answer your call," with staffing ramping up, hopefully Delta's main reservations line will be able to take your call, soon.

It’s often unusually difficult to track down phone numbers for specific airline departments. Sifting through page after page of web information and attempting to find the right contact can be frustrating, not to mention a waste of time.

That’s why Upgraded Points has done the tedious research for you.

We’ve listed the most useful U.S.-based numbers (at least those that the airlines publicize) for many of the major airlines below. Additionally, we’ve added some general resources at the end of the post, so be sure to check them out.

General Tips for Travelers with Disabilities

The Department of Transportation (DOT) has a toll-free hotline for travelers with disabilities: 1-800-778-4838/1-800-455-9880 (TTY/TDD).

Available 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (EST), Monday through Friday, the hotline aims to:

  • Provide general information to consumers about the rights of air travelers with disabilities
  • Respond to requests for printed consumer information
  • Provide”real-time” assistance for air travelers with time-sensitive disability-related issues

General Baggage Tips

For issues with delayed/lost baggage , it is imperative to speak with a baggage claim assistant prior to leaving your arrival airport. This will ensure a PIR is made (Property Irregularity Report). Without this report, most airlines cannot begin looking for your bag, nor can they be held responsible for the bags in question.

General Lost and Found Tips

If you’ve left something at a TSA Security Checkpoint, try the TSA Hotline phone number: 1-866-289-9673.

AirportLostAndFound.com is a global lost and found cloud database. Their public database claims to feature lost property listings from over 10,000 major airports and airlines around the globe. It’s worth checking out if you’re having difficulties recovering an item through your specific airline.

Each airline has a number of different ways you can get in touch — from phone numbers for Reservations to social media channels to Lost and Found. Having these numbers and methods of contact handy will make contacting these airlines a much easier experience, especially when you need help fast.

Frequently Asked Questions

How should you contact airline customer support if you're hearing or speech impaired.

If you’re hearing or speech impaired, many airlines may have a dedicated line, or extension that you can dial to receive the assistance you need. Additionally, you could dial 711 for TTY or contact the airline via email depending on how pressing your question is.

How do I speak to a person at American Airlines?

You can speak to American Airlines reservations by dialing 1-800-433-7300.

How do I speak to a Delta representative?

Delta’s reservation department can be contacted at 1-800-221-1212.

Who can I call to book a flight?

Most airlines themselves have reservation departments, and this is usually the best place to start if you need to purchase an airline ticket.

The 2nd Most Connected Airport In The World: New York JFK's 5 Largest Airlines By Scheduled Seats

  • JFK Airport is highly international, hosting flights operated by a plethora of carriers.
  • The top five most prominent include Virgin Atlantic, British Airways, American Airlines, JetBlue, and Delta Air Lines.
  • Flying with UK-based airlines will get you across the pond, while US-based carriers offer an impressive number of services in any direction.

New York City's JFK Airport is the second most internationally connected airport in the world according to data gathered by OAG (the most internationally connected city in the world is London's Heathrow Airport ). Over 90 airlines operate from JFK, offering flights to all inhabited continents and destinations far and wide. According to Cirium , an aviation analytics company, the five top international airlines operating at JFK by inbound and outbound flights in 2024 are Virgin Atlantic, British Airways, American Airlines, JetBlue, and Delta Air Lines. Perhaps surprisingly, United Airlines (one of the United States' largest airlines) does not operate from JFK; it has a major hub at Newark Liberty Airport, just over the border on the New Jersey side.

Virgin Atlantic

Virgin atlantic operates transatlantic flights out of jfk's terminal 4 to the united kingdom..

Virgin Atlantic is the fifth-busiest airline operating out of JFK's Terminal 4. A British airline, Virgin Atlantic operates a mix of Boeing and Airbus widebody aircraft and has its main base at London Heathrow (its secondary hub is at Manchester). The routes Virgin Atlantic offers from JFK are to London Heathrow and Manchester.

Virgin Atlantic recently made headlines when its Boeing 787 Dreamliner collided with a British Airways Airbus A350 at Heathrow. The incident was relatively minor, with the wing tip colliding with the horizontal stabilizer. Virgin Atlantic and Virgin Australia are the two remaining airlines of the Virgin empire (other Virgin group airlines like Little Red, Virgin America, Virgin Express, and Virgin Sun Airlines are no more).

The Virgin Group Airlines: A Summary

British airways, british airways operates transatlantic flights from jfk's terminal 8 to gatwick and heathrow in london ..

British Airways is the flag carrier of the UK and the country's second-largest airline (behind easyJet). It is headquartered in London, close to its principal hub, London Heathrow. In 2018, Forbes reported British Airways took in a record $1,037,724,867 from flying passengers between London and New York over a 12-month period. This is the first time in history that an airline managed to generate over a billion dollars on a single air route within a year.

From JFK, British Airways only operates flights to London. That said, these flights go to London's two busiest airports - London Gatwick and Heathrow. British Airways is a founding member of the oneworld Alliance and one of the most recognizable airline brands in the world.

American Airlines

American airlines operates international flights worldwide out of jfk's terminal 8..

American Airlines is the third-busiest international airline operating at JFK and operating international flights to Europe, the Caribbean, the United Kingdom, Mexico, East Asia, South America, and elsewhere. In all, American Airlines flies to almost 350 destinations in nearly 50 countries. When measured by fleet size and scheduled passengers carried, American Airlines is the largest airline in the world.

American Airlines operates around 67,000 flights annually out of Terminal 8 (primarily catering to high-demand destinations by local New Yorkers). JFK is American Airlines' principal transatlantic hub and has around 13% of the market share at the airport. Its main New York domestic hub is New York-LaGuardia.

(Still) The World's Largest: The American Airlines Fleet In 2024

Jetblue operates international flights primarily to the greater caribbean area out of jfk's terminals 4 and 5..

JetBlue is the second-busiest international airline operating out of JFK and is one of America's largest low-cost airlines. JetBlue is headquartered in Long Island City in Queens with JFK serving as the airline's main hub. JetBlue flies to around 108 destinations domestically and internationally and is the sixth-largest US airline. JFK and Boston Logan Airport have about 30% of JetBlue's outbound flights, and it operates from JFK's Terminals 4 and 5.

JetBlue has a strong focus on the greater Caribbean holidays. The vast bulk of its international flights are in the Mexico-Carribean-Central American-northern South American area. It operates only a limited number of routes outside of that - primarily to Western Europe.

Delta Air Lines

Delta air lines operates international flights to europe, the americas, and beyond out of jfk's terminal 4..

Delta Air Lines is the busiest airline at JFK and one of the oldest airlines in the world. It is ranked among the largest airlines in the world (and the largest when measured by revenue). It is headquartered in Atlanta, with the powerhouse Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport being its busiest hub overall. However, JFK is actually the US legacy carrier's busiest international hub. Delta is a founding member of the SkyTeam airline alliance, and, according to Skytrax , it is the best airline in North America. Even though Delta, by a considerable margin, has the largest market share at JFK, it solely operates from Terminal 4.

Delta serves around 325 destinations in over 50 countries on all six inhabited continents. Delta is arguably the only airline offering truly global destinations from JFK Airport. It offers flights to Europe, Mexico, Israel, the Caribbean, South America, and more. From Scotland to Greece, Delta offers many flights to Europe.
