The ultimate guide to the DFDS Amsterdam Mini Cruise

I’ve just got back from a weekend break to Amsterdam with DFDS on one of their mini cruises . I’m a firm believer in making the journey as much of the adventure as the destination, which is why I was so excited to go on the mini cruise from Newcastle to Amsterdam.

Setting sail at 5pm on a Friday from Newcastle, we sailed overnight and woke up with the sun rising over the port. After a 40-minute transfer to Amsterdam, we spent the day exploring the beautiful city before heading back to the boat and returning, waking up on Sunday morning in Newcastle.

If you’re wanting to make the most of your weekends, and have a little luxury weekend adventure, then this could be the trip for you!

Newcastle to Amsterdam mini cruise at a glance

There are two ships that sail the Newcastle/Amsterdam route: King Seaways and Princess Seaways. For our trip, we were on the Kings Seaways which has two restaurants, a bar, a nightclub/entertainment area, a coffee shop, a children’s play area, a casino, an arcade and duty-free shopping.

There is a whole host of room types including sea views, dog-friendly rooms, premium cabins; commodore and commodore de luxe.

Commodore De Luxe Cabins

The commodore de luxe cabins are the most premium cabins on board – and boy do they come with a lot of extras!

Found on deck 10, these cabins have their own floor and you are greeted by members of the crew who take you to your room.

I couldn’t believe how spacious the rooms are in the commodore de luxe cabins. We had a twin cabin, and there was plenty of space for the two of us. On entering the room, you step into the living room area which has a sofa, chairs and table and dressing table. Then you had the two beds, built into the wall, and it felt very nautical. The bathroom on board had a shower, sink and toilet and was huge compared to the standard rooms (which was very welcome when seasickness hit!). Oh, and let’s not forget the two huge windows which give you the perfect sea view.

Commodore De Luxe cabin | DFDS mini cruise to Amsterdam

But Commodore De Luxe isn’t just about the gorgeous rooms…

You also have access to a private lounge where you can get drinks (soft drinks, wine, beer and prosecco), snacks, teas and coffees as well as a quiet place to sit and enjoy your journey. In the morning, you can also find pastries to keep you going before breakfast.

Speaking of breakfast, this is also included with commodore de luxe cabins. Rather than heading to Explorers Kitchen with the rest of the boat, everyone staying in the Commodore De Luxe cabins have their breakfast at the North Sea Bistro. There’s a whole range of hot food, pastries and cold meats and cheeses and it is delightful here, and a lot less hectic that the main Explorer’s Kitchen.

What to eat on DFDS Amsterdam mini cruise

There are two main places to eat on board the King Seaways boat for dinner and breakfast – North Sea Bistro and Explorers Kitchen.

North Sea Bistro vegetarian meal | DFDS mini cruise to Amsterdam

The North Sea Bistro

The North Sea Bistro is the a la carte restaurant on board and is absolutely beautiful.

It’s a small menu, however a great range of options from steak to seabass to oysters. I actually opted for the vegetarian option, Pommes Anna, which is a medley of thinly sliced potato, zucchini, carrot, beetroot and sweet potato served with pickled red onion and a portobello cream sauce. I can honestly say this exceeded expectations and was full of flavour.

My friend went for the steak, which looked equally as delicious, which came with a peppercorn sauce and potato wedges.

For dessert we both opted for the chocolate fondant which was delicious, but I was so sad that the center wasn’t as gooey as I would like!

The buffet on the DFDS mini cruise to Amsterdam

The Explorer’s Kitchen

The Explorer’s Kitchen is an all you can eat, around the world buffet. With a wide selection of foods from curries to salmon wellington to pizza – there truly is something for everyone here.

Sadly, when we ate here I was actually starting with sea sickness (it was a rough crossing coming back) so my appeitite was non exsistant at this point. However, I have actually done this sailing before, and usually eat at the buffet. From experince, it’s always a decent meal with lots of options.

The North Sea Bistro costs for 2 Courses is €38.95, and 3 Courses €42.95.

The Explorer’s Kitchen costs €25.95 for adults and you can be there for 1hr30.

Personally, I would choose the North Sea Bistro as it just felt a lot calmer and I really enjoyed my meal here.

Coffee Crew

As well as these two restaurants, there’s also a coffee shop on board which sells Starbucks Coffee and sweet treats.

What to do on a DFDS Amsterdam mini cruise

Selfie of Katie at sunrise on the DFDS mini cruise to Amsterdam

There is something for everyone onboard the DFDS mini cruise to Amsterd am. We didn’t actually get round to everything we wanted to do on board either – plenty to do on my next trip for sure! Here’s a run down of what’s available;

Bars & Live Music

There are plenty of places to sit down with a drink (can definitely recommend the cocktails!), soak up the atmosphere and be entertained.

The Compass Club is where you can dance to your hearts content however it was the Navigator’s Pub where we found ourselves as there was live acoustic music, which everyone was singing along too, and it was such a good atmosphere here.

At the Compass Club, you can also play bingo at 9pm. Sadly we missed this, but I can imagine it would be a lot of fun!

Arcade & Casino

On board there is a casino area for adults, and an arcade for all ages, which also included an air hockey table.

Children’s Scavenger Hunt

At 7pm on board, a scavenger hunt around the boat takes place for children, and they all looked like they were having a lot of fun! There’s also a mini soft play on board for them as well.

Showing some of the latest films, there are two screens on board showing films throughout the whole evening (I think the last screening took place at 11pm).

It costs around £8 per person and is a really fun way to spend the evening, especially if you don’t want to sit in the bars.

Duty Free Shopping

Of course there is duty free on board, and I always find that DFDS has the best prices compared to other ferry operators. I actually did buy some perfume on board because the price was so good compared to back on land.

As well as your classic duty free offerings, there is also a small clothes store on board too so if you run out of clothes, don’t worry because they’ve got you covered!

dfds mini cruise to amsterdam zoo

How long do you have in Amsterdam on the DFDS ferry from Newcastle to Amsterdam?

You dock in Holland at around 10am, and if you’re on the day mini cruise, I recommend queing early to get off, to make the most of your trip.

On this trip, we ended up in the very slow passport control queue, so we didn’t get into Amsterdam until just before 12pm. There are coaches back to the boat between 3pm and 4pm, and we headed to the coach around 3:45pm.

If you’re doing the mini cruise, the transfers between the boat and Amsterdam are included in the price. You can pay on the day as well.

Can you leave your belongings on board?

When you’re on one of the mini cruises, yes you can leave your belongings on board when you explore Amsterdam for the day. You have the same room on both journeys, so it’s essentially a floating hotel!

Overall thoughts on the DFDS mini cruise from Amsterdam to Newcastle

Overall, we had a great time on our mini cruise to Amsterdam.

I always think this is a great way to get a flavour for the city, and I’m sure you’ll want to return. If you’re wanting longer in Amsterdam, you can always book an extra night on land through DFDS to make this mini cruise into a whole holiday!

Even though seasickness hit (for the first time ever for me), I would defintely travel again. This was my 6th DFDS cruise to Amsterdam, and every time we have a great time. There is always a great level of service, and the boat is always clean and in good condition.

Best Cross Channel & Mini Cruises To Amsterdam

I just love culturally diverse cities, and Amsterdam, the capital city of Holland, certainly doesn’t disappoint. Once you arrive here, there’s lots and lots to see and do. From the world-famous galleries and museums such as the Van Gogh Museum to the high street and boutique shopping, picturesque canals, and beautiful architecture, there is so much to absorb. There are even novelty attractions you can visit, such as Madame Tussauds, or if you enjoy the outdoors, then why not visit one of the many parks, such as Vondelpark, which is an enormous park in the south of the city.

Getting to Amsterdam is very straightforward, and there are many mini-cruise break options from the UK to Holland. I have chosen a selection of short cruises with a few various options; some of them can be taken regularly throughout the year, offering flexibility to the traveler, whilst others I have selected are more luxurious mini-cruises that restrict the traveler to a certain date. With plenty of options from the really cheap travel bargain to an expensive luxury cruise, the choice really is yours!

Wherever you stay, Amsterdam, or elsewhere, be sure to take advantage of our free upgrades, free breakfasts, and free perks at almost every luxury hotel around the world, including Four Seasons, Hyatt, Fairmont, InterContinental and more. Just book your stay via our luxury travel concierge .

dfds mini cruise to amsterdam zoo

Absolute madness that you can sail from North Shields to Amsterdam, I have obviously been aware of it but it keeps slipping from my mind! I really need to get on broad (tee hee ... funny!) with this as it's such a wasted opportunity not to go! I'm seriously impressed with the look of the boat, I had no idea there'd be so much on board. I thought it'd just be a large boat with a little coffee area and that was about it! Love that there's a cinema! Simon and I have often talked about maybe doing a cruise one day but I'm a little nervous as I can get a bit sea sick on small boats and am not sure how I'd do on a larger boat. I'm thinking maybe we should mini cruise to Amsterdam as a trial run! Chloe x newgirlintoon.co.uk

dfds mini cruise to amsterdam zoo

We took travel sickness tablets as a precaution before our trip but they were probably not needed as our trip was very smooth! Go for it - they have a deal on at the moment from £49 pp or you can try a day sailing for their 20th Anniversary in May or a day sailing to see the Sunderland air show in July xx

dfds mini cruise to amsterdam zoo

That looks lovely, and how great to have a mini cruise to Amsterdam on your doorstep. It looks a great ship and so much on board. Am off to Amsterdam in July so looking forward to reading about the zoo too.

It's fab that it's on our doorstep as more often than not these things are down South! We had a lovely time - zoo post coming up at the start of next week....

dfds mini cruise to amsterdam zoo

It sounds like you had a great trip. Your photos tell the story beautifully along with your writing. I totally relate to soft play induced hyperactivity too.

What is it with soft play? My friends love them and are always asking to meet there but I can't think of anything worse! The kids do love it though. We had a fantastic trip, thank you xx

I've applied to be in their advertisement too! Would love to try the newcastle to amsterdam route too! Although me and hubby would have to go on the top bunks! 5 berth cabins are great though! #traveltales

Yes I was given the middle bunk! Wasn't as bad as I thought although I did bang my head a few times!

I remember going on an overnight cruise to Amsterdam when I was in my 20s but we were cheapskates and just paid for reclining chairs! Your cruise certainly looks more comfortable. We went to Amsterdam a couple of years back with the kids and really enjoyed Artis Zoo (although it poured with rain). Hope you had a good time too.

Oh dear - I can't imagine travelling overnight on just a reclining chair! The cabins are far more comfortable. The same thing happened to us at Barcelona zoo - gorgeous weather all week and then poured with rain on the day of our trip! We still had a good day though xx

dfds mini cruise to amsterdam zoo

Sounds brilliant. The perfect getaway when you have kids to keep happy - yours look thorougly excited and entertained. The cabin is a decent size too. Tx

Yes I was really impressed with the cabin size as honestly only expected a postage stamp. We had a great trip xx

dfds mini cruise to amsterdam zoo

Hey that looks great! My three would love the triple bunk!! If only I didn't get sea sick I'd be thinking about it xx

We were very lucky with a smooth crossing - you didn't even feel like you were moving. I have heard it's not always like this though so think you need to choose the right time of year if you suffer xx

dfds mini cruise to amsterdam zoo

Great post and good to here your trip started off so well. I'm so orientated to the South and ferries hoping across the channel, I'd never thought of them going from North Shields.

It's fab that we have this option up here - such an easy way to travel :D

We went on a similar trip from Hull before we had the kids and really enjoyed it. We have recently looked into taking the kids on this trips from North Shields, the 5 berth cabins are ideal for us too. Looking forward to you next couple of blogs on days two and three. :-)

I would highly recommend - 5 berth cabins are a huge plus point for us as I hate having to split our family into two rooms!

I have often wondered what a DFDS cruise would be like for a family when I've seen the ads on TV. Your blog is great and I'm looking forward to reading your next instalments :)

Thanks Tracey - I hope it has given you some insight xx

What fun! I know my kids would love it. The food looks lovely too. I've had some not to nice cruise ship food so that has always put me off a cruise with kids a little but it looks nice. The Kids Club looks pretty great as well.

Yeah the food was fab and of very good quality - I do sometimes moan that the children have far too many chicken nuggets for my liking but it's there holiday too and they love them!

This looks like a fantastic way to start a mini-break. It's good that a lot of the travel time's taken up with sleeping - takes away the need to find a hotel at your destination!

That is exactly it - no time wasted which is fab - you are only in Amsterdam for 4-5 hours but you really make the most of your time x

Wow, ok, so ferries - they've improved a bit since the last time I was on one, haha. Ok, admittedly that was a million years ago, but I'm super impressed at the cinema and the steak house on board, all the same! I've always ruled overnight ferries out till now - which is odd really because I wouldn't blink an eye about going on a cruise ship - I normally opt for flying or the Eurostar instead, but clearly I'm going to have to look into this further because things have quite obviously moved on a LOT since the last time I sailed.

Yeah steakhouse, cinema, cocktails....what more could you ask for :-) We had a fab time on board and the whole time felt like we were on holiday - the ship was so much more than a means of travelling from A-B.

dfds mini cruise to amsterdam zoo

I have never even thought of going on the mini cruise with children as i always thought it would just be full of stag and hen parties. It is nice to hear there was so much for children to do onboard x

This sounds like such a great idea and I never really thought about mini cruises like these. Definitely a nice relaxing way to see somewhere new!

Lovely write up, I think the mini cruises to Amsterdam are brilliant, so affordable and theres plenty to do on board xxx

I love mini cruises like these! I have done one from Hull to Bruges and it was great and brilliant that they are at such an affordable price! Can't wait to see what you got up to in Amsterdam xo http://rachelnicole.co.uk/

What a fantastic review. I've been toying with the idea of going on a cruise for a while now, as there seems to be so much to do onboard - especially for kids, which you have just illustrated perfectly. I am suprised by the size of the cabin, too. I really thought it would have been more poky. The food looks delicious - steak and chips are my favourite. It's definitely a nice weekend treat so look forward to reading more! Thanks so much for linking up with #MondayEscapes x

I was just looking for info about plug sockets and stuff because I'm taking Abigail for her birthday present and who should I google upon but lovely you! Now I need to go and search for my blooming plug though, last seen disembarking a ship in Barcelona, wish me luck!!

Newcastle to Amsterdam mini cruise

PROS - Lovely staff. Delicious food, reasonable prices. Extremely clean. Cabin suited our needs but try to get a commodore suite if they're available. Great entertainment. Sit on the benches at the back of the deck for a great view under the heaters. Easy boarding and docking. Bus too and from the ship is very fast and convenient CONS - alcoholic drinks are extortionate, €15 for a vodka and JD. Take your own in board just be discreet. Bathroom in cabin very small. The toilet is located within the shower cubicle and both are split by a shower curtain giving you a small triangle to get showered in. Only one plug in the cabin and not located near a mirror so impossible to dry your hair and see yourself at the same time. Overall would do it again but would def get a bigger cabin.

This is the letter of complaint I sent to DFDS following our awful journey (as detailed below). I have never received an acknowledgement or response - one month later. For the attention of: Bent Ostergaard – Chairman of the Board, DFDS Niels Smedegaard – CEO, DFDS Dear Sirs I am writing to inform you of the distress my family experienced during our recent ferry crossing with DFDS Seaways. Unless your company’s policy changes I will never use your ferry services again. Moreover, I will actively encourage anyone who knows me with children to never use your ferry services. My family (2 adults and 2 children, aged 4 and 10) travelled from Newcastle to Amsterdam on 5/4/14 and returned on 11/4/14 – for reference our booking details were: xxxxx. On both journeys we experienced anti-social behaviour in the early hours of the morning in the rooms and corridors near our cabin. The outward journey was particularly distressing with extreme bad language, shouting and violence at 3am. This went on for nearly an hour and a half until I believe a member of staff came to intervene and calm the situation. In the morning there was blood in the corridor. There was no way we could alert staff from our room or leave our room to go to Guest Service for fear of our safety. My husband is a British Police Officer and if he had experienced this type of behaviour whilst at work there would be no doubt these people would be arrested. My children, husband and I were woken by the noise, were distressed by the shouting and I had to ask my children to put their fingers in their ears such was the nature of the bad language. It is an experience I never wish to repeat or my children to have to experience in the first place. On our return journey last night, we experienced a similar situation at 1am: banging, loud singing and shouting for at least an hour. At least on this occasion the shouting was in another language and did not turn to violence and the people went to sleep eventually. No member of staff was on hand and again, there was no way in which we could alert staff safely to the situation. I spoke with a member of staff each morning at Guest Services who could only empathise with our distress but stated when I asked, that there was no company policy to allocate families in the same area of the ship away from groups or single-sex adult bookings, and even if we had paid more for our cabin we could well be in the same situation. It would seem, therefore, that it is pot-luck whether you will be located next to alcohol-fuelled rowdy, rude and/or violent people. I asked for details of your company so I might write and complain, and was encouraged by your member of staff to do so, although he thought it wouldn’t do any good. At no time during the booking process was there any indication that our journey and experience might be compromised. Nor was there an option to request a family friendly cabin. In all other matters our journey and the facilities on board were excellent and you obviously cater for children on board during the day with kid’s clubs, cinema and menus. All the staff from check-in, loading, guest services and catering were friendly and helpful. Our cabins were comfortable, clean and suitable for our journey. I ask then why at night you can’t ensure “safe overnight ferry services”* for families? I would be more than happy to pay an additional reasonable surcharge to guarantee a family-friendly cabin location. Why don’t you have regular/visible security patrolling corridors or a means for people to contact guest services in the night to report trouble? I hope that you will take on board my comments and suggestions. I look forward to hearing from you on how you will take them forward to improve my and, no doubt, other families’ experience of your ferry services. Regards * as quoted on your website

Just got home after a lovely weekend in Bruges. The only downside were the crossings with DFDS. We did Dover - Dunkerque - Dover, and what hard work it was. Ships are old and worn, the public areas were dirty and untidy, there is absolutely nothing to do, and the service is below poor. We travel as a family to France twice a year, and previously have always gone with p and o or Brittany... We thought we would try DFDS, but we won't bother again! Whoever is in charge of DFDS should spend some time with Brittany ferries to see how it should be done! Massive lack of communication from the ship staff to the customers, no-one bothered to announce that car decks were open! On the way back the ship was rammed with screaming kids on a bus trip, running round like animals escaped from the zoo. The bistro was closed so the only good option was the buffet. The queue was so large it went past the travelex desk! After an hour queuing we finally got served, the one poor bloke left on his own to serve breakfast to a whole ship looked like jumping overboard! By the time we had got out breakfast and then queued again for an extortionate amount of time to pay, it was stone cold and not edible. The staff on the ship are either overworked and tired or just plain rude! Don't bother using DFDS, pay the extra £20 and go with p and o, at least you know your holiday will start ok.

The ferry was nice, I was pleasantly surprised by the standard double cabin we where in..really was expecting to be able to touch all four walls at once but it wasnt that bad and managable for 2 nights. The food was poor quality and massively over price £14 for fish (pollock) n chips n drinks where even worse. The above issues though I expected before I boarded..not like u can go round the corner to a different restaurant and with the fayres so cheap that's where they make their money. My two biggest complaints where the extremely annoying tannoy announcements which are in your a cabin from 8am and the incredibly rude compare in the night club..apart from repeatedly offering the band members up to the audience for sex in a dirty pimp kinda way he then made several personal and insulting remarks about people on the audience, none of which was provoked..cant tell you how much I loathed this creep after 2 nights! !

Took the ferry to Holland from the north east for a midweek break. The ferry itself was quite reasonable but the cabin bed was very uncomfortable. On the return journey, I hardly slept because of the poor bed and an annoying rattle coming from the ceiling fan. The prices for food (reasonable quality) and drink were, on the whole, scandalous. I will avoid this ferry company in future if at all possible. If I must use it, I will consume my own food and drink in the cabin.

Travelled to Amsterdam for a couple of days via DFDS seaways at the end of April. I had never used an overnight ferry before but didn't know what to expect. Checking in at Newcastle was very smooth and easy. On board an announcement was made offering an upgrade to Commodore class and although our cabin was fine we upgraded anyway. What a difference. Well recommended if you can. The cabin was huge. Had a tv/dvd player. The ensuite was ideal and spacious. Had use of a mini bar, free wifi. Also there is access to the commodore lounge which is so relaxing with windows looking out of the front of the ship. As much wine spirits and beers and snacks as you want and a free steward service. Spoilt rotten. Breakfast too was in a separate restaurant. The food was very good both at breakfast and also the evening meal. Again highly recommended. However............ the journey back was a nightmare. Firstly customs at Amsterdam was just chaos. No one seemed to know what was going on. We queued for ages only to find we had no boarding card because that was another queue so had to go back to the end of another queue and start again. No signs or information about this. All guess work. I think a lot can be learned from Newcastle end to show how it should be done. Then we eventually got to our cabin. Best described as a small smelly compartment. Obviously a problem with the drains. Smell was overwhelming. The bathroom is so small that the toilet is actually situated in the shower. Needless to say we tried to upgrade but there is no facility for this on the Princess seaway. We did eventually get moved to another cabin. A steward came to smell our cabin and said there is always a problem with this one. Cabin 4411. I said why is it not rectified then or certainly not allocated. No reply.... This ferry is very tired. The window frames are rusty the general appearance is shabby from the carpets to the paintwork. The food was ok though, buffet style. Yhe ferry on the whole is very noisy so sleep was out of the question. So different from the King Seaways. So if its possible to go and return on that ferry that is well worth considering.

Hi, I'm David and I'm a mini cruise addict. I love the ease and simplicity of exploring Europe from the comfort of a cruise ferry or cruise ship almost as much as I love finding great value deals, including the mother of all deals, the famous '2 for 1' deals.
