One family’s long-awaited week-long trip to Walt Disney World ultimately cost them more than $315,000, and believe it or not, the staggering amount didn’t even include the cost of theme park tickets for each guest.

Not All Disney Vacations Take Place During the Summer

Guests who frequently visit the four theme parks at the Walt Disney World Resort can attest to the fact that the Central Florida Disney Resort tends to be more crowded during certain times of the year–namely, during the summertime and the Christmas holidays in December.

However, it’s not uncommon for some families to take their children out of school so they can travel to Disney World, and though the children might be counted absent by school officials, that’s often the extent of the proverbial fallout.

But for one family in the United Kingdom, the results were quite different.

One Family Takes a Chance on the “Magic”

Jon Platt and his wife decided to take their six-year-old daughter on a trip to Disney World with several members of their extended family, but since the trip was scheduled for April, it would mean taking her out of school during that time as well.

The trip was to last for seven days, and the trip had to be planned for April because it was the only week that would work for everyone in the 17-member group.

Visiting Disney World during the school year is a common practice for many families. Some do it to avoid crowds, and others do it to save money. But doing so isn’t easy for everyone, including Platt and his wife.

In the United Kingdom, school truancy laws are strict, and school attendance is mandatory. As such, Platt faced a very negative experience once he and his family returned from their trip to the Most Magical Place on Earth.

The Family is Fined For Taking Vacation During the School Year

Upon the family’s return from Florida, Platt faced a fine of £120 (about $150 USD) because his daughter missed school . He could have paid the fine, and the matter likely would have been dropped. Instead, Platt decided to fight the fine in court.

Instantly, however, Platt was convicted of “failing to ensure his child regularly attended school after a court heard clearing him would ‘undermine Parliament’ and go ‘against public interest’ following a Supreme Court ruling.”

Jennie Walker, a magistrate at Isle of Wight Magistrates’ Court, confirmed that school rules were broken when Platt and his wife took their daughter out of school to go to Disney World .

“The circumstances of this case fall squarely into that breach of school rules,” Walker said.

Platt was sentenced to a 12-month conditional discharge and ordered to pay a hefty fine of £2,020 (approximately $2,550 USD).

The Family Decides Not to Fight the Court Further

“This is the end for me now; this has gone on for far too long, and far too much money has been spent by me and the taxpayer,” Platt said. “I’ve spent close to £30,000; a Freedom of Information request found £140,000 has been spent by the taxpayer, but if you include the Supreme Court legal costs, I think it isn’t far off a quarter of a million [pounds].”

The amount of £250,000 converts to approximately $316,000 USD, meaning Platt’s Disney World trip ultimately cost more than $316,000–and more than two years of his family’s life.

“Way too much money has been spent, but I’m not going to appeal it,” Platt continued. “I don’t agree with the magistrate’s decision, but I’m going to respect it. I’m sure there are parents out there that hate me and I’m sure there are some who think I’m a hero. But at the end of the day, I turned up to court to say ‘not guilty’ to an offense I’m not guilty of.”

Platt also said that public opinion about his case was divided.

“Satisfactory” Didn’t Mean “Satisfactory”

Despite his daughter’s school attendance record being presented to the court—documenting an attendance of 92.3% of her class time—all of the judges at the Supreme Court level ruled against Platt.

During the court case, one of Platt’s attorneys, Paul Greatorex, argued that the court’s continued prosecution of the young father was unfair. Greatorex further requested that the court throw out the case.

According to Metro :

Paul Greatorex outlined his case for an ‘abuse of process’ argument by saying Platt’s daughter had an attendance level between 90 and 95 percent which the school deemed as ‘satisfactory’. Mr. Greatorex QC said the documents Platt received from the school were ‘completely vague’ and it was not made clear that if he took her on an unauthorized holiday he would receive a fixed penalty notice and be prosecuted if he did not pay it.

It’s worth noting that Platt was told that his daughter’s attendance was “satisfactory” and that a family vacation wouldn’t change that. Even so, he was forced to pay the fine imposed by the court in addition to the legal fees he accrued as he fought the court’s decision.

How much is a ticket to Disney? Cheaper than usual this summer

Summer can be scorching hot in Florida, but if you can take the heat, you can score some of the best deals of the yea r at Walt Disney World. 

Special three- and four-day Magic Tickets bring prices down to under $100 a day for adults, which at Disney and other theme parks means anyone age 10 and up.

Disneyland in California is also offering a summer promo slashing prices in half for kids ages 3 to 9. Admission is always free for children under the age of 3 at both resorts.

Here’s what to know about saving at Disney parks this summer.

How much do tickets to Disney World cost?

Disney World tickets vary by date and park. This year, starting prices for one-day, one-park admission for adults range from $109 at Disney's Animal Kingdom to $124 at Magic Kingdom. Next year , the cheapest one-day, one-park adult tickets will cost $119. On most dates, prices are significantly higher than the starting price. 

However, the resort is offering two ticket deals through the summer. The 4-Day, 4-Park Magic Ticket starts at $396, which works out to $99 a day. That includes one day at each of Disney World’s four theme parks, without park-hopping or repeating parks. Tickets are valid through Sept. 22 and must be used within seven days of the start date.

The 3-Day, 3-Park Magic Ticket starts at $267, which works out to $89 a day. It includes one day each at EPCOT, Disney’s Hollywood Studios and Disney’s Animal Kingdom, without park-hopping or repeating parks. Admission to Magic Kingdom is not included. Tickets are valid through Sept. 24 and must be used within five days of the start date.

How much does it cost to go to Disneyland?

Disneyland ticket prices also vary by date. One-day, one-park admission starts at $104 for adults and $98 for kids ages 3 to 9. However this summer, child prices drop down to less than $50 per day with a special 3-Day Disneyland Ticket offer.

Guests visiting Monday through Thursday can save the most. Three-day tickets cost $249 for adults and $149 for children, which works out to $83 per day for adults and less than $50 per day for kids with no park hopping. Monday to Thursday tickets may not be used on Fridays or weekends.

Guests who want more flexibility can get 3-day tickets valid any day of the week for $299 per adult (less than $100 per day) and $199 per child (less than $67 per day), without park hopping.

Both types of tickets are valid from June 10 through Sept. 26 and are subject to park reservation availability. Unlike Disney World, Disneyland still requires park reservations for all tickets.

The nearest hotels to Disneyland Paris for a fun family trip to the theme park

Well worth a mini-break so you can make the most of both of its theme parks – Disneyland Park and the movie-themed Walt Disney Studios Park – Disneyland Paris is surrounded by an array of hotels. Some of them are Disney’s own options, which means they feature exciting appearances by costumed characters and other themed jollity. Others are unaffiliated with it but provide plenty of Disney-inspired fun or interesting alternatives for a more grown-up stay – especially good for Disney lovers coming without children.

Several of the nearest hotels to Disneyland Paris are within walking distance of the park, with one of the very closest, Disney Hotel New York , being just 10 minutes’ walk away. If they're a little further away, most hotels also offer free shuttles to the park for an easy journey into the centre of the action. Many hotels near Disneyland Paris also have entertainment where you'll be staying – think pools and activities keeping the fun running even when you’re away from the rides and attractions. They're also often close to other local sights and attractions, such as the SEA LIFE Paris Val d’Europe Aquarium, so there's more than enough to keep everyone entertained.

With Eurostar running direct trains to Marne-la-Vallée station just minutes from Disneyland Paris during popular times including school holidays and bank holidays, it takes only two hours and 49 minutes to make the journey from London St Pancras International. And remember that staying at a hotel near Disneyland Paris is also great for day trips into Paris itself.

Whether you're travelling with your children or grandchildren, there's a hotel near Disneyland Paris for you. You'll find Marvel, Cars and Toy Story -themed Disney hotels, non-Disney options with heated swimming pools and huge gardens, plus eco-friendly options with forest-themed activities.

When it comes to sleeping arrangements, there are plenty of family rooms available in the hotels near Disneyland Paris and things are geared up for larger groups. There are rooms with bunk beds, quadruple rooms with two double beds and interconnecting rooms for larger families travelling as a group.

Disney Hotel New York - The Art of Marvel

One of the best Disney hotels at the French theme park, a 10-minute walk through Disney Village or just a couple of minutes’ free shuttle-bus ride away, this Manhattan-styled option features the world’s largest collection of Marvel artwork (more than 350 pieces) plus a Marvel Design Studio where kids can create their own masterpieces to their heart's content.

The real draws of Disney Hotel New York , however, are the heated indoor and outdoor swimming pools, kid's pool and hot tub, and outdoor Hero Training Zone. Parents, meanwhile, can also take some well-deserved time out in the sauna and steam room. Two restaurants and bars between them offer Italian dining, crafts beers, organic wines and more.

Disney Hotel Santa Fe

While not the most modern of Disney properties, this fun, neon-lit and colourful homage to Route 66 and the American Southwest (and to the Pixar movie Cars ) remains a popular option, especially for those on a slightly more restricted budget.

A 20-minute walk from the theme parks but also offering a free shuttle, Disney’s Hotel Sante Fe features car-themed rooms (some by the riverside), a Tex Mex/global cantina and an indoor play area. Parents can kick back and enjoy a cold beer or cocktail in the brilliant Rio Grande bar or, come morning, stop off at Starbucks for a morning caffeine fix.

Walking distance to Disneyland Paris: 20 minutes

Disney Hotel Cheyenne

Similar to the nearby Hotel Santa Fe, this is another wonderfully budget-friendly property that's just a 20-minute walk (or a quicker free shuttle ride) from the park. Wild West-themed after the iconic Toy Story movies, it delights kids with its on-theme rooms, outdoor play forts, covered wagons and pony rides. There's also the brilliant Chuck Wagon Café, which dishes up delicious home-smoked chicken and a host of specials.

Meanwhile, parents make a beeline for Disney Hotel Cheyenne ’s Old West styled Red Garter Saloon with its foaming beers and lively country music soundtrack. Before leaving, don't forget to pick up a treat from the cowboy-inspired General Store.

Grand Magic Hotel

Formerly the Magic Circus, this non-Disney hotel is a fun option half an hour’s walk from the park or an eight-minute free shuttle away. It features a heated indoor pool, a games room, and huge gardens with a lake, where kids can let off steam as parents kick back on the terrace with a drink after the end of a long day of exploring the parks.

Grand Magic Hotel ’s light and airy rooms, with their contemporary decor and constellation artworks, include family options with well-designed bunk beds, and there are two relaxed restaurants. There's fun around every corner here, including a daily multimedia show at 7pm.

Dream Castle Hotel

Although it's not a Disney hotel, this option in French-style gardens has a distinctly fairy tale feel all of its own – especially when deer wander out of the forest into the scenic grounds. Dream Castle Hotel is linked to the park by a free shuttle taking just eight minutes, or you could also walk in around half an hour.

Like the Disney hotels, Dream Castle is super-family-friendly, with an indoor pool and spa, family rooms, a games room and an indoor playground. When it comes to eating and drinking, there are several child-pleasing dining options including the Rôtisserie and the quirky Astrolabe Bar dispensing pastries, burgers, salads and sharing platters. There's also a brilliant breakfast buffet to peruse each morning, sure to set you up perfectly for a day of enthusiastic exploring.

Walking distance to Disneyland Paris: 30 minutes

Moxy Paris Val d’Europe

About a 25-minute walk from the park, this trendy urban retreat is perfect both with kids and without, with stylish rooms (some earmarked for families). Expect free drinks at check-in, outdoor space and an indoor play/sociable/co-working areas for grown-ups and youngsters alike – one of which features a pool table.

Moxy Paris Val d’Europe also has its own modern French bistro that's great for unwinding in at the end of a day of Disneyland exploration, but there's a Grab n Go corner for 24/7 food and drinks if you're looking for something quick and easy. There are also rental bikes if you're keen to have a look around the surrounding area.

Disney Davy Crockett Ranch

You’ll need your own car (or a taxi; it’s about 15 minutes by road) to get to Disneyland if you stay at this Wild West frontier village-themed option, but in return you’ll enjoy a forest setting that forms a peaceful counterpoint to your time in the theme parks.

Here, you'll stay in self-catering cabins with a barbecue (sleeping up to six, some welcoming dogs) and enjoy facilities including a heated indoor pool with waterfalls, rivers and whirlpools, an indoor tennis court, mini-golf, an adventure play area and a games arcade. For eats, Disney Davy Crockett Ranch has a tavern with all-you-can-eat buffets, while Crockett’s Saloon is a wood-panelled spot for drinks and a few rounds of pool.

Les Villages Nature Paris at Disneyland Paris

Close to the Davy Crockett Ranch in a natural green setting, this eco-minded village is owned by Center Parcs and has a similar vibe, with lots of on-site activities to keep you busy when you’re not at Disneyland (25 minutes away by paying public shuttle or 15 minutes by car). Accommodation at Villages Nature Paris is in contemporary apartments with up to two bedrooms sleeping six, while things to do including water-based fun in the water park, the heated outdoor lagoon or (in summer) the clear lake with its swimming and beach games and sports.

You can also spend time at BelleVie Farm with its pony club and its animal care and gardening sessions, enjoy the aerial obstacle course and go wild in the forest-themed playground with its rope bridges, treehouses and secret pathways. There's even a water park to explore as well, making this a great option for longer trips to the parks when you need a little more to explore. Overall, it makes for a bucolic escape that's perfect combined with the excitement of Disneyland Paris.

L'Elysée Val d’Europe

A popular choice among those who don’t want to stay in a themed hotel, this restful plant-filled option with its simple, clean-lined decor has rooms and suites ranging from doubles to quadruples, plus connecting options that combine to sleep up to eight people. Premium versions come complete with bathrobes, slippers and coffee machines.

Set in a handsome, classically French building, L'Elysée Val d’Europe has a light-flooded steakhouse, plus a café-bar with tapas and a corner with board games and books. There’s a free Disneyland shuttle from right in front of the hotel, or you can walk there in about 25 minutes. This is the ideal choice if you're looking for a boutique option near the parks – why not have the best of both worlds?

Relais Spa Val d’Europe

A couple of streets from L’Elysée and around the same distance to the park, this upmarket aparthotel has a high-end NUXE spa in which to recuperate after all the theme-park fun, with a pool, Jacuzzi, steam room and sauna (children can also swim at set times).

The tasteful rooms and suites have fully equipped kitchens for flexibility, though there is also room service from Ô Relais restaurant – or of course the chance to eat in this breezy space with its excellent menu including the likes of salmon ballotine with Puy lentils and wild garlic cream (there’s also a great under-12s menu for younger diners). Check into one of Relais Spa Val d'Europe ’s Executive Suites and you can enjoy a chauffeur-driven ride to Disneyland Paris in the hotel’s Jaguar, too. A very grand take on the theme park experience...

Radisson Blu Hotel Paris, Marne-la-Vallée

Resembling a French chateau in style, this Radisson Blu is a smart option that's surprisingly close to Disneyland Paris. The hotel's free shuttle to the theme park takes just seven minutes and runs every half an hour, unless you want to drive yourself.
