What's The Song In The Last Voyage Of The Demeter Trailer?

"Renfield" isn't the only film hitting theaters this year that is inspired by Bram Stoker's "Dracula." Universal Pictures is also set to release "The Last Voyage of the Demeter" this coming August. However, unlike "Renfield," which offers a comedic, modern take on its source material, "The Last Voyage of the Demeter" promises to deliver a darker experience that is a bit tonally closer to Stoker's original "Dracula" novel. Taking that into account, the darkness of the upcoming horror film is represented well by the song that plays during the back half of its first trailer.

The track in question is none other than "Bullet With Butterfly Wings" by The Smashing Pumpkins, which debuted on the band's 1995 album, "Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness." In the liner notes for a reissue of the album, Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan briefly explored the themes of "Bullet With Butterfly Wings," writing, "The song's true message has grown on me over the years, as I find it to be a withering attack on the lameness of fame."

Thematically, that may make it seem like the Smashing Pumpkins track ultimately doesn't have all that much to do with the story of "The Last Voyage of the Demeter." That doesn't mean the song isn't the right choice for the film's first teaser trailer, though. As a matter of fact, the song notably opens with the lyric, "The world is a vampire / sent to drain."

The Last Voyage of the Demeter explores one terrifying Dracula chapter

Directed by "The Autopsy of Jane Doe" filmmaker André Øvredal, "The Last Voyage of the Demeter" will bring to life one memorable chapter of "Dracula." The film is based, in specific, on a chapter known as "The Captain's Log," which details through multiple firsthand and secondhand accounts the terrifying fate that befell the crew of a ship that was unknowingly tasked with transporting Count Dracula from Transylvania to England.

"Game of Thrones" star Liam Cunningham leads the film as the captain of its eponymous ship, while actors like Aisling Franciosi, Corey Hawkins, and David Dastmalchian play members of the crew serving under Cunningham's captain. For his part, Javier Botet, who is known for playing creatures like The Crooked Man in "The Conjuring 2," will appear as Dracula himself. Based on the few glimpses of him that are featured in the film's first trailer, too, it seems safe to say that Botet's Dracula will be one of the more physically horrifying versions of the character that has ever been brought to life on-screen.

The initial teaser for "The Last Voyage of the Demeter" paints its iteration of Dracula as a slasher-esque figure who is intent on slowly but surely picking off the crew members of the film's eponymous ship. With that in mind, it makes even more sense that "Bullet With Butterfly Wings" was chosen for the film's first trailer. After all, "Despite all my rage / I am still just a rat in a cage," which is repeated throughout the song's chorus, feels like a pretty fitting way to describe what it'd be like to be trapped on a boat with a blood-sucking vampire.

A long-awaited Dracula movie is getting a helping hand from one of our most celebrated composers. Bear McCreary, the man behind the music of Godzilla: King of the Monsters and The Walking Dead (among many others), has announced that he is providing the score for The Last Voyage of the Demeter . Taking to Twitter, the musician revealed that he is crafting the soundtrack for the film about the fabled vessel’s doomed voyage.

“I’m thrilled to announce I scored #TheLastVoyageOfTheDemeter, collaborating with visionary director André Øvredal. Thanks Amblin and Universal Pictures for giving me the chance to write a cinematic theme for #Dracula. (A dream come true for any composer!)” McCreary said in his post. We haven’t heard much of McCreary’s work for the film yet, as the trailer ( which you can watch right here ) largely uses a slowed-down version of “Bullet with Butterfly Wings” by The Smashing Pumpkins. But one assumes that the man will bring his A-game in realizing his dream of composing a theme for Dracula.

McCreary has well over 100 credits to his name, from big TV shows to video games and yes, movies. Some of his noteworthy credits for horror fans out there include the Child’s Play remake , Wrong Turn 2: Dead End, Happy Death Day, 10 Cloverfield Lane and Freaky , just to name a few. His inclusion here is certainly welcome.

As for the story at hand? The movie is based on a particular chapter in Bram Stoker’s Dracula , and it’s a project that has been in the works for decades. At long last, Universal Pictures managed to make it happen, with Øvredal, of Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark and The Autopsy of Jane Doe fame , at the helm. The synopsis for the film reads as follows:

“Strange events befall the doomed crew as they attempt to survive the ocean voyage, stalked each night by a merciless presence onboard the ship. When the Demeter finally arrives off the shores of England, it is a charred, derelict wreck. There is no trace of the crew.”

The cast includes Corey Hawkins ( Straight Outta Compton ), Aisling Franciosi ( Game of Thrones ), Liam Cunningham ( Clash of the Titans ), David Dastmalchian ( The Boogeyman ), Jon Jon Briones ( American Horror Story ), Stefan Kapicic ( Better Call Saul ), Nikolai Nikolaeff ( Stranger Things ) and Javier Botet ( Mama ).

The Last Voyage of the Demeter is set to hit theaters on August 11.

How The Last Voyage of the Demeter Trailer Promises a Bloody Cruise

A brief chapter in Bram Stoker's Dracula will become a horrifying fight for survival in The Last Voyage of the Demeter.

Vampires, vampires, vampires -- were it not for zombies, you'd think that vampires would be the most prolific movie monster in existence. The bloodsucking beasts have seen countless interpretations across multiple genres, ranging from humorous supernatural comedies to primal survival thrillers. There was even a point in time when their skin sparkled in direct sunlight instead of lighting up like a benzene torch. However, there remains one king of all vampires whose reign has remained undisputed since he hit the scene in 1897: Count Dracula.

Dracula's story has been told over and over again, from Universal Pictures' classic monster films all the way up to their modern-day re-imagining of the character, Renfield . Everyone knows the characters, the plot beats, and all the classic parts of Bram Stoker's classic story. But, the upcoming film The Last Voyage of the Demeter will take an opportunity to expand upon what was originally a minor passage from the story. The horrifying voyage that carried Dracula to London will come to life on the big screen, giving us a look at how vicious our suave vampire can be. Let's take a look at the film's trailer for a taste of what's to come.

Expanding Upon Bram Stoker's Dracula

Before the trailer even begins, we get a confirmation that our lead vampire is, in fact, Dracula. A particularly spectacular shot showcases the profile of our bat-winged bloodsucker, revealing an animalistic set of ears and a bald head made up of pale, wrinkled skin. The romanticized idea of Dracula is nowhere in sight, instead opting for something similar to 30 Days of Night or Nosferatu . He stares down at the deck of the ship, pondering where his next meal may come from.

But before the madness begins, we're blasted with the sun's rays. It's daytime, and the transport ship Demeter is set to deliver a set of private crates from Romania to London. A close-up of one of the crates reveals a metallic seal adorned with a dragon, looking more like a coffin than genuine cargo. Our narrator emphasizes that the ship will be completely alone at sea, with no land in sight beyond the horizon. A horror sting follows this statement, setting the stage for the horror show to come.

We're subsequently introduced to our central protagonist, Clemens (Corey Hawkins), a doctor from Cambridge who joins the ship's crew prior to departure. Cheerful cackles erupt from the rest of the crew as it's revealed that a bonus will be paid out for a timely arrival in London. Though, as the sun begins to set, things start to take a grim turn.

Dracula Is Absolutely Terrifying

A young boy (Woody Norman) escorts Clemens throughout the bowels of the ship, introducing him to the ship's dog, Huckleberry , as well as the practice of "knocking on wood" to quickly communicate throughout the ship's interior. A few erratic cuts show different stages in the ship's journey, including the introduction of a stowaway (Aisling Franciosi) to Clemens. But as Clemens voices praise for the ship's operations, the familiar knocking becomes twisted into something terrible.

When Huckleberry follows the sound into the bowels of the ship, a shadowy figure begins to emerge from out of view. In an instant, the figure lunges at him before we cut to black. The grim visage of a dead goat flashes back into view, revealing that the ship's livestock had been killed. While our captain (Liam Cunningham) prompts an investigation, we can't help but dread what happens next.

What makes The Last Voyage of the Demeter so exciting is that, besides bringing a vicious, animalistic Dracula to the big screen, the film will primarily take place on an isolated ship . The result is a constant battle for survival, showcasing an intelligent Dracula swiping away at the crew's dwindling resources in a journey they won't likely finish. In a particularly haunting scene, the go-lucky boy from before is chased by Dracula before he locks himself in a cramped room. As he hides under a bed, whimpering while clutching a small knife, Dracula's immense strength is shown off as he smashes through the door's planks with ease.

A Vampiric Voyage

Similar to how Zack Snyder utilized The Cranberries' hit song Zombie in Army of the Dead , the Smashing Pumpkins' single Bullet With Butterfly Wings is given a dramatic retooling for the rest of the trailer. Is it because it has the word "vampire" in it? Frankly, we don't know.

Jokes aside, the rest of the trailer plays out to the beat of this popular song . A bearded crew member (Stefan Kapicic), likely after having been bitten by Dracula, is seen forcefully restrained to a table, kicking and thrashing like a rabid animal. When exposed to sunlight later in the trailer, his flesh cooks in the unforgiving heat as the rest of his body is set ablaze. Seeing as how Dracula only strikes as night, we can assume that he's just as vulnerable. A close-up of Dracula's hand as he attacks someone else reveals a gigantic pair of clawed fingers adorned with dried blood, hair follicles, and sinewy muscle.

The trailer concludes with one final action shot. Our stowaway and Clemens take up a rifle and ax each as they face down a swooping Dracula in the middle of a tense storm. It makes for a terrific finale. Although, anyone who reads the original Dracula book likely knows whether the ship will ultimately make it to London.

The Last Voyage of the Demeter is shaping up to be a fantastic vampire film for both enthusiasts of the genre and fans of horror in general. Directed by André Øvredal ( Trollhunter , The Autopsy of Jane Doe ), it'll be released in theaters on Aug. 11.

The Last Voyage Of The Demeter Trailer: The Long-Gestating Dracula Movie Is Ready To Dock

Universal's had an ... interesting ... time, to say the least, trying to produce movies related to the classic Universal monsters. Nobody can forget (although you should probably try) the disastrous effort to jumpstart a cinematic universe with 2017's Tom Cruise-starring "The Mummy," a movie so dead-on-arrival that it spurred two viral memes: that accidental trailer upload with no actual sound , and the ultimate cart-before-the-horse moment in dubbing the franchise "The Dark Universe" before it was ever actually a sure thing. The studio managed to right the boat somewhat with much more of a standalone approach in the years since, however, between Leigh Whannel's excellent "The Invisible Man" and, to a lesser extent, the upcoming "Renfield" (you can read /Film's review by Chris Evangelista here ).

Now, however, it finally seems as if Universal is properly going back to its horror roots with its next effort, "The Last Voyage of the Demeter." Based on a famous chapter from Bram Stoker's original "Dracula" novel, the long-delayed film is finally set to become a reality as a new and unbelievably creepy trailer has been released. Single-location horror movies have sort of gone by the wayside in the last several years, though recent efforts like "Skinamarink" have served as helpful reminders of just how powerful this tool can be. Add in the potent and immensely disturbing trappings of "Dracula," set it on a forlorn sailing ship, and it becomes difficult to believe that a movie based on one of the most harrowing chapters in "Dracula" has taken this long to come to fruition. 

We've been reporting on this project for well over a decade by now, documenting its many starts and stops over the years as several filmmakers and actors have tried to be the ones to crack the code. Now, it appears that Norwegian horror director André Øvredal and writers Bragi F. Schut, Stefan Ruzowitzky, and Zak Olkewicz will be the lucky ones to finally guide this past the finish line.
