11 – Spend the night stargazing!

Within the bounds of the inner city, the towers twinkle and the fairy lights wink, but venture outside of Dubai and you’ll find a whole other universe waiting to be explored. From the rolling sand dunes of the deserts to the rocky Hajar Mountains in the East, there are plenty of spots where you can sit back, relax, and take in the blanket of stars above.

Boasting a justified moniker and a crowd favorite for serious stargazers, the Al Quaa Milky Way spot is about a two-hour drive from Downtown Dubai and offers some seriously picturesque night sky opportunities. Officially the first ice lounge in the Middle East, Chillout is one of the coolest (pun intended) places to visit in Dubai , especially at night. As the name suggests, this place is entirely made out of ice – from the walls and tables to the seats and glasses. And at negative six degrees Celsius, it’s pretty darn cold.

20 – Catch the main highlights with a night bus tour

Take to the streets of Dubai on an open-top, double-decker bus and see the city’s top sights illuminated against the night sky. This is a great activity for first-time visitors as it gives you a lay of the land and helps orientate you to your surroundings.

And, no, this isn’t some Willy Wonka-esque experience or a scene out of The Hunger Games. It’s actually a pretty popular (albeit pricey) Dubai nightlife activity that offers up one of the most unique dining experiences you’re likely to find anywhere in the world.

You and close to two dozen other diners are strapped into your seats around a rectangular table as the crane lifts you skyward for an hour-long session of eating, drinking, and chatting while taking in unobstructed views of Dubai from above.

The whole setup feels very safe (you’re buckled in as you would be on a roller coaster) and, more importantly, the food is delectable.

Just note that Dinner in the Sky fills up fast (you need to book a reservation well in advance) and it’s not for those who are faint of heart or prone to Vertigo. Oh, and they also do lunch, if that’s more your jam.

22 – Align your chakras with Full Moon Yoga at the Talise Spa

Throw in a carousel, a handful of arcade games, and a soft play area for the littlest of tots and you’ve got yourself at least a couple of hours of solid entertainment.

24 – Wander around the Dubai Gold Souk

Sparkling gold jewelry is one of the main reasons people flock to Dubai – the emirate accounts for roughly 25% of the global trade, believe it or not – and the Gold Souk is the city’s most famous market for it.

Open daily from 10 am to 10 pm Saturday to Thursday and 4 pm till 10 pm on Friday, this bustling market is home to over 300 stores selling everything from gold and silver coins to diamond-studded watches, strands of pearls, silver necklaces, bracelets, bangles, pendants, and more.

And if you’re thinking all of this must come with a hefty price tag, think again. While some of the pieces on offer are quite expensive, you’ll be surprised at how reasonable many of them are (be sure to practice your bargaining before you visit though!).

After meeting your guide and beautiful Arabian horse at the Al Dhabi Horse Riding center on the outskirts of the desert (around 30 minutes outside of Dubai – or you can arrange hotel pick up for an extra fee).

Towering a whopping 219.5 meters above ground level on floors 52 and 53 of the Address Sky View Hotel, the Sky Views Observatory dishes up top-notch vistas over the bustling Dubai downtown area. 29 – Pick up some souvenirs at the night markets

Always bustling, embodying the traditional Arabic souk culture, and never shy of a bargain, the array of night markets in Dubai are amazing spots to pick up some inexpensive souvenirs, try delicious (and often first-time) foods from all over the world, and soak up the vibrant atmosphere.

The most famous of these is the Gold Souk – a market dedicated to jewelry that’s been in operation for decades and is now one of Dubai’s most popular tourist attractions with over 380 retailers. It is called the City of Gold, after all.

Here, you’ll find an impressive display of dazzling gold jewelry on offer at surprisingly reasonable prices (keep in mind that bargaining is expected). Don’t read too much into the name, this place is far from your typical museum. A coming-together of all things optical illusions, mind-bending puzzles, and interactive exhibits, the Museum of Illusions is guaranteed to result in countless photos that’ll light up any social media feed.

You can walk through spinning vortex tunnels, see what life is like in an upside-down world, sit in a perspective-warping Beuchet chair, get lost in a mirror maze, and watch the impossible happen right before your eyes — all up, you’ll find more than 60 interactive exhibits that play with your senses and challenge reality.

Located on the ground floor of The Dubai Mall (one of the largest shopping malls in the world too, if you don’t mind!), the sprawling aquarium is home to over 33,000 diverse and curious aquatic animals, including sharks, rays, turtles, and crocodiles and more colorful fish than you could ever count.

You can walk through a 48-meter-long underwater tunnel for an up-close look at the creatures swimming around you, or take a glass-bottom boat ride for a bird’s eye view of the massive tank (which departs every 10-20 minutes, so you don’t have to visit at any particular time).

Not shy of an educational twist, there are plenty of programs, talks, and displays here you can learn about different marine ecosystems and see penguins, otters, piranhas, and a whole lot more.

Visiting Dubai parks is one more way to experience Dubai at night. While Dubai parks provide fresh air and shade during the day, by night they can be transformed into really cool tourist attractions!

Garden glow

This park is especially worth visiting with small children. It may be a good idea to arrive shortly before the sunset in order to see it from totally different perspectives. Dubai Garden Glow consists of several interesting parts, Magic and Ice parks are not included in the ticket price and need to be purchased separately.

Glow park is a large collection (around 500) of impressive displays and installations created from recycled fabric and 10 million LED lights.

Dinosaur park – fantastic animated dinosaur sculptures that will drive your kids crazy.

Ice park – a beautiful collection of ice sculptures depicting wild animals. Warm clothes will be provided!

The magic park is a great place to take photos (upside-down house etc), reminded us of the Illusion museum we visited in St. Petersburg, Russia.

Art park – 3D art paintings where you can step into the picture. This is another great way to take memorable photos.

Zabeel Park

Zabeel Park is located right next to Dubai Frame and offers a great place to relax and take a walk. While during the day people come here to have a picnic or escape from the heat, by night this is a quiet place to enjoy, take a walk, and escape from the hectic city vibe.

Global Village

One of the best places to visit at night in Dubai is Global Village – a multicultural amusement and theme park, inspired by different cultures and countries (16 pavilions in total). Global Village is best enjoyed after dark when the heat has passed, and you can be comfortable outside. Each of the areas is designed to keep special attributes of the country/culture in mind. You can expect to find local handicrafts, snacks, and drinks as well as souvenirs in various country halls.

Moreover, Global Village offers numerous free shows, concerts, and other entertainment for both young and old. Most shows are free, few are for an extra charge (such as stunt show). As if it wasn’t enough already, you can also enjoy thrilling rides at the region’s largest funfair!

Of course, the list of places to visit at night in Dubai wouldn’t be complete without traditional night attractions, such as theater, shows, and nightclubs. Here are the best ones you should consider.

Have you ever been to any Cirque du Soleil shows? If you enjoy things like that, you will most probably love La Perle! Created by famous Franco Dragone, Italian theater director, this is a mix of spectacular light, technology, and acrobatics. music, performances, audiovisual experience and special effects are incredible!

Two daily shows are performed by 65 world-class acrobats and performers from 23 countries. The performance includes acrobatics, contortion, flying, diving, and even motorcycles stunts. The coolest part is the aqua theater with waterfalls, torrents, and rain on a floor.

Madinat theatre

Going to the theater may not be the most obvious thing to do in Dubai at night, but that is exactly why we should have it on our list. Surprisingly, Madinat theater sounds like a great idea if you are looking to spend some quality time during your holiday. Located in the heart of the Souk Madinat Jumeirah, this 442-seat theater was the first one built in Dubai.

This theater has been around for a while already and seen performances from Shakespeare’s plays and international comedy to famous Broadway musicals, opera, and classical concerts. Some very famous names have stepped on this stage, such as the Moscow City Ballet and the UK Comedy Club show.

Dubai Opera

With its 2000 seat capacity, Dubai Opera is a true jewel of the downtown district. The building itself is a masterpiece, resembling the traditional sailing vessel – dhow. The opera was opened in 2016 and is a major space for theater, opera, ballet, concerts, conferences, and exhibitions.

Desert Safari evening and overnight

True adventure lovers will certainly appreciate the overnight desert safari tour organized by various travel agencies in Dubai. The tour starts with evening dune bashing, followed by activities in the Bedouin camp, such as BBQ dinner, belly dancing, fire show. Quad biking and sandboarding are for an extra charge. When the evening turns into night, you will be handed sleeping bags, mattresses, and blankets and get to enjoy the night under the stars, followed by a stunning sunrise in the Arabian desert.

Having seen the evening safari , I can recommend this trip for everyone who wants to enjoy the desert at the fullest. It’s a beautiful place to be and the evening we spent there was way too short for this kind of action-packed activity. BBQ dinner was very delicious, with lots of meat and veggie options as well as traditional Arabic sweets.

Big Bus night tour

The big advantage of a night bus tour is the much cooler weather (compared to day time) and the smaller amount of traffic. Board the Big Bus tour for a night adventure in Dubai and see the city from a totally new perspective! You will be passing all major attractions, such as Burj Khalifa, Palm Island, Burj al Arab and many more.

The best about this tour – no need to go to each attraction separately, they are all on your route!

Things to see in Abu Dhabi at night

If all mentioned above doesn’t cut the deal and you feel like there is a need for some extra sightseeing to be done in UAE after dark, how about a short ride to the neighboring state Abu Dhabi? We will not burden you with numerous restaurants for a night out, but rather suggest few interesting and unusual activities.

Sheikh Zayed Mosque

The largest mosque in UAE, this impressive structure was constructed between 1996 and 2007. This beautiful mosque is very impressive during day time when the sun illuminates its perfect white walls. However, when the day turns into night, a whole new look comes into life – the Mosque is lit and becomes something out of this world, almost a fairy tale castle from the One Thousand and One Nights book!

Corniche beach walk

Corniche is a city beach walk. Its a lovely part of Abu Dhabi, ideal for walking during late and night hours. You can rent a bicycle or simply stroll along the coastline, enjoying the view of the sea and the skyscrapers of Abu Dhabi. The area is very safe during night time. There are a few cafes to fulfill your hunger.

12 Exciting Things to Do in Dubai at Night

The Dubai Fountain , as it is commonly known, is one of the best places to stop by at night. The musical extravaganza is accentuated by spectacular lights where the water reaches almost 50 floors high. 6,000+ lights and fifty projectors illuminate the choreographed water show. The dance performance covers a range of tunes – from classical Arabic scores to international music.

The Dubai Music Fountain is on the artificial lake near the Burj Khalifa. The performances can be witnessed at noon, around 1300 and 1330 hours. Every evening, starting from 1800 hours, and in a gap of 30 minutes, there are shows, continuing till 2200 hours on weekdays and till 2300 hours on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. The legal drinking age in Dubai is 21 years of age, and Dubai nightclubs adhere to this rule very strictly. Don’t even think about driving if you’ve had a drink, as there is zero tolerance for drink driving and you’ll almost guarantee yourself in front of the courts if you are caught by police.

For visitors to Dubai, a passport is an acceptable form of ID, while residents will need their Emirates ID or a driving license. Whilst 21 is the legal drinking age, some clubs may limit entry to those 25+.

Although skimpy party wear, in general, is frowned upon in public places in Dubai, nightclubbing attire is a whole different ball game. Dubai nightclubs are really dress to impress places – for ladies, this means short skirts and microminis wouldn’t be turned away, and gents will want their nicest shirts and trousers. If you are catching transport on the way to a nightclub, it would be advisable for ladies to cover up. If you are casually dressed in jeans, shorts, or flip flops, other than at beach clubs you are likely to be turned away. You can read more about the dress code in Dubai here.

This is highly variable. Some will extend the party all the way from brunch closing through to the early hours, whereas some won’t open until restaurants close. You can bet on most being open until at least 3:00 AM.

Dubai has surprised the world with its ambitious projects before. However, will the latest plan become another irrational approach to investment, or will it bring success like Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world?

The Emir of Dubai announced that the new airport is to be the port of the world, offering connections to many places around the world.

The new airport is to be not only gigantic, but also modern and comfortable for passengers. The construction of five parallel runways and 400 passenger gates is planned. Dawn broke over scenes of devastation in several counties across Oklahoma on Sunday, with reports of severe structural damage, closed highways, blackouts, injuries and at least five deaths. There have been 35 reports of tornadoes overnight so far.

Twenty-seven million people remained at risk of severe weather into Sunday, including wind gusts, hail, flood risk and potentially more tornadoes.

Saturday's severe weather came less than 36 hours after more than 100 tornadoes leveled homes and buildings in six states Friday, with Nebraska and Iowa being hit hardest, officials said.

The National Weather Service office in Norman, Oklahoma, confirmed late Saturday that multiple tornadoes were in its area, including one near Davenport and more than one in the area of Sulphur, a small town of about 5,000 people 80 miles south of Oklahoma City, which appeared to have taken the biggest hit.

On Sunday, the weather service's Norman office said that, based on preliminary damage survey results, tornadoes with ratings of at least EF3 tore through Sulphur and Marietta in Oklahoma. The service said more investigation would be necessary to determine whether the rating will go higher.

The Murray County Emergency Management reported “significant damage” in Sulphur. In Love County, patients had to shelter during storms that damaged Marietta Hospital, though no injuries were reported, the county emergency management office said.

Also in Marietta, four semitrucks overturned, killing one person, after a tornado ripped through Interstate 35 on Saturday night, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol said.

Oklahoma’s Office of Emergency Management confirmed three deaths, one near Marietta on I-35 and two others in Holdenville. Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt arrived Sunday afternoon in Sulphur, where he said a fourth person died in the downtown area.

One of the Holdenville victims was 4 months old, Stitt's press secretary said, citing Holdenville officials.

More than 170 storms were reported Saturday after days of severe weather. Storms were still expected through southern Missouri to southeast Texas on Sunday.

Flash flooding is also a concern for 18 million people from Kansas City to Lake Charles, Louisiana. Some flood warnings will continue into Monday.Video emerging on social media early Sunday showed heavy damage across Sulphur, including toppled trees and scattered bricks and wooden beams. Buildings in the downtown area sustained significant structural damage, including blown-out windows and missing walls. Others appeared to have been leveled and reduced to rubble.

The Oklahoma Health Department reported 100 injuries at area hospitals, according to the state Emergency Management Department. Of the injured, 25 were cut or had been pierced, 30 fell, 16 were hit by or struck against objects, 17 sustained transportation-related injuries, and 12 others were hurt by other means, the emergency services department said. The extent of each of the injuries was unclear.

Red Cross Oklahoma said early Sunday that it was opening a shelter in Sulphur and was in contact with officials in more than a dozen counties to help with the immediate needs of affected residents.

Stitt signed an executive order Sunday declaring a disaster emergency.

In neighboring Hughes County, officials reported four people injured, as well as several structures either damaged or destroyed, after a tornado ripped through its western part late Saturday.

On Sunday, Hughes County Emergency Management reported 14 homes were damaged or destroyed in Holdenville. In addition, officials said four properties were damaged in Okfuskee County, and Pottawatomie County Emergency Management reported seven damaged structures in Dale and unincorporated areas of Shawnee.

There were also "numerous injuries" and damaged structures in Wagoner County, officials said.

Homes and other structures were also damaged in communities in Garfield, Grant, Kay, Payne and several other counties in Oklahoma, officials said.

The National Weather Service in Norman said that as of 1:25 a.m. local time Sunday, some tornado warnings had passed but that flash flooding remained a threat.

Bruce Thoren, meteorologist for the agency's Norman branch, said teams will go out to the Marietta and Sulphur areas while others may be sent elsewhere through the week.

"We are aware of other places that received damage, but based on travel time and other factors they will be looked at in days to come, probably not today," Thoren said. "The area that we cover is pretty large compared to other forecast offices, so to travel down and back could be up to four hours. So we’ll for sure get there, and we know there’s damage — just trying to figure out where we go today."Oklahoma Gas and Electric Co. said early Sunday about 28,000 customers were without service as a result of the storms, primarily in southern Oklahoma.

The Oklahoma Transportation Department warned early Sunday that I-35 was closed in both directions in Love County because of storm damage cleanup.

More than 30 million people in Oklahoma City; Dallas; Wichita, Kansas; Omaha, Nebraska; Milwaukee; and Madison, Wisconsin, were in the path of severe weather Saturday.

This round of severe weather arrived even as parts of Nebraska and Iowa were still reeling from the damage caused by two tornadoes that struck the region.

Omaha Mayor Jean Stothert said Saturday that no deaths had been reported and that there were relatively few minor injuries.

Despite heavy damage to some residents' homes, including those belonging to three Omaha firefighters and two police commanders, officials Saturday were grateful it wasn't worse.Speaking at an afternoon news conference, Stothert said she planned to sign an emergency declaration, which would allow residents to tap state and federal recovery aid.

She credited the National Weather Service and local news media for warning the public about the tornadoes.

"I do want to thank our local forecasters for the clear and accurate warnings that they gave," she said. "I absolutely feel that this early warning, because of all of you, you prevented a lot of injury and probably death."

Lindsay Huse, health director for Douglas County, where Omaha is located, said by email that fewer than two dozen people suffered minor injuries. They were treated at medical facilities and have been released, she said.

"That's just miraculous," Huse said earlier at the news conference.

The National Weather Service assessed two tornadoes that struck the Omaha area Friday afternoon. One started in the area of Lincoln and ended up in western Douglas County, NWS meteorologist Chris Franks said at the news conference.It was preliminarily assessed at a "solid" EF3 on the 0-5 scale used by federal forecasters, he said. An EF3 tornado can produce sustained winds of 136-165 mph and shift homes off their foundations while peeling away exterior walls.

At Omaha Eppley Airfield, a tornado preliminarily assessed at EF2 struck Friday afternoon, Franks said. An EF2 tornado can produce sustained winds of 111-135 mph that can partly peel away rooftops and breach window glass.

Tornado activity was also reported in neighboring Iowa. Franks estimated that 80 tornadoes were reported in Douglas County and adjacent communities in Nebraska and Iowa on Friday.

In Lancaster County, Nebraska, a tornado was blamed for a train derailment and a semitruck rollover, according to National Weather Service notes on Friday's vortexes.

Omaha Police Lt. Neal Bonacci said hundreds of homes were damaged, most of them in the Elkhorn area in the western part of the city.

“You definitely see the path of the tornado,” Bonacci said.

Police and firefighters went door to door to help residents and search areas where people could be trapped, Omaha Fire Chief Kathy Bossman said.

"We’ll be looking throughout properties in debris piles, we’ll be looking in basements, trying to find any victims and make sure everybody is rescued who needs assistance," Bossman said.

Pat Woods, who lives in Elkhorn, told The Associated Press that he and his wife took shelter but could hear the tornado "coming through."

"When we came up, our fence was gone, and we looked to the northwest and the whole neighborhood’s gone," he said.

His wife, Kim Woods, said the neighborhood to the north of them was "pretty flattened."

Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds declared a disaster emergency for Pottawattamie County after video on social media showed parts of Minden, about 30 miles northeast of Omaha, completely flattened.Jeff Theulen, the chief deputy of the Pottawattamie County Sheriff’s Office, said at a news conference Friday evening that 40 or 50 homes were "completely destroyed." There have been two reports of injuries, one "fairly severe but not life-threatening," he told reporters.

By Sunday, officials estimated that the storms had damaged 300 homes and businesses in the county, Pottawattamie County said in a release. In the city of Minden, 48 homes were "completely destroyed."

Pottawattamie County added in the release that four people sustained storm-related injuries. Three were treated and released Friday evening. The fourth, who was previously listed as stable in critical condition, died overnight Saturday.

"It's very dangerous right now. We've shut off entrance to the city except for the people that live here," he said, noting that "50% of the town is damaged badly and then there’s light damage everywhere else."

In nearby Shelby County, about 40 homes were damaged, county emergency coordinator Alex Londo said. Officials were assessing the destruction, he said, noting there have been no reports of deaths.

National Weather Service offices surveyed damage ahead of more severe weather expected Saturday.

The service reported 106 tornadoes Friday in Nebraska, Iowa, Texas, Kansas and Missouri. Another tornado was reported Friday morning in Pottawatomie County, Oklahoma.Oklahoma was also affected by the unstable air and thunderstorms that marched eastward Friday, but the weather service listed no confirmed tornadoes in the state.

Among Friday's tornadoes getting a preliminary assessment by the weather service were two near Waco, Texas — one believed to be at EF2 strength — and the other assessed at EF1 (86-110 mph).

Hot Oceans Worsened Dubai’s Dramatic Flooding, Scientists Say

An international team of researchers found that heavy rains had intensified in the region, though they couldn’t say for sure how much climate change was responsible.

Scenes of flood-ravaged neighborhoods in one of the planet’s driest regions stunned the world this month. Heavy rains in the United Arab Emirates and Oman submerged cars, clogged highways and killed at least 21 people. Flights out of Dubai’s airport, a major global hub, were severely disrupted.

The downpours weren’t a total surprise — forecasters had anticipated the storms several days earlier and issued warnings. But they were certainly unusual.

Here’s what to know.

Heavy rain there is rare, but not unheard-of.

On average, the Arabian Peninsula receives a scant few inches of rain a year, although scientists have found that a sizable chunk of that precipitation falls in infrequent but severe bursts, not as periodic showers. These rains often come during El Niño conditions like the ones the world is experiencing now.

U.A.E. officials said the 24-hour rain total on April 16 was the country’s largest since records there began in 1949 . And parts of the nation had already experienced an earlier round of thunderstorms in March.

Oman, with its coastline on the Arabian Sea, is also vulnerable to tropical cyclones. Past storms there have brought torrential rain, powerful winds and mudslides, causing extensive damage.

Global warming is projected to intensify downpours.

Stronger storms are a key consequence of human-caused global warming. As the atmosphere gets hotter, it can hold more moisture, which can eventually make its way down to the earth as rain or snow.

But that doesn’t mean rainfall patterns are changing in precisely the same way across every part of the globe.

In their latest assessment of climate research , scientists convened by the United Nations found there wasn’t enough data to have firm conclusions about rainfall trends in the Arabian Peninsula and how climate change was affecting them. The researchers said, however, that if global warming were to be allowed to continue worsening in the coming decades, extreme downpours in the region would quite likely become more intense and more frequent.

Hot oceans are a big factor.

An international team of scientists has made a first attempt at estimating the extent to which climate change may have contributed to April’s storms. The researchers didn’t manage to pin down the connection precisely, though in their analysis, they did highlight one known driver of heavy rain in the region: above-normal ocean temperatures.

Large parts of the Indian, Pacific and Atlantic Oceans have been hotter than usual recently, in part because of El Niño and other natural weather cycles, and in part because of human-induced warming .

When looking only at El Niño years, the scientists estimated that storm events as infrequent as this month’s delivered 10 percent to 40 percent more rain to the region than they would in a world that hadn’t been warmed by human activities. They cautioned, however, that these estimates were highly uncertain.

“Rainfall, in general, is getting more extreme,” said Mansour Almazroui, a climate scientist at King Abdulaziz University in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, and one of the researchers who contributed to the analysis.

The analysis was conducted by scientists affiliated with World Weather Attribution, a research collaboration that studies extreme weather events shortly after they occur. Their findings about this month’s rains haven’t yet been peer reviewed, but are based on standardized methods .

The role of cloud seeding isn’t clear.

The U.A.E. has for decades worked to increase rainfall and boost water supplies by seeding clouds. Essentially, this involves shooting particles into clouds to encourage the moisture to gather into larger, heavier droplets, ones that are more likely to fall as rain or snow.

Cloud seeding and other rain-enhancement methods have been tried around the world, including in Australia, China, India, Israel, South Africa and the United States. Studies have found that these operations can, at best, affect precipitation modestly — enough to turn a downpour into a bigger downpour, but probably not a drizzle into a deluge.

Still, experts said pinning down how much seeding might have contributed to this month’s storms would require detailed study.

“In general, it is quite a challenge to assess the impact of seeding,” said Luca Delle Monache, a climate scientist at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in La Jolla, Calif. Dr. Delle Monache has been leading efforts to use artificial intelligence to improve the U.A.E.’s rain-enhancement program.

An official with the U.A.E.’s National Center of Meteorology, Omar Al Yazeedi, told news outlets that the agency didn’t conduct any seeding during the latest storms. His statements didn’t make clear, however, whether that was also true in the hours or days before.

Mr. Al Yazeedi didn’t respond to emailed questions from The New York Times, and Adel Kamal, a spokesman for the center, didn’t have further comment.

Cities in dry places just aren’t designed for floods.

Wherever it happens, flooding isn’t just a matter of how much rain comes down. It’s also about what happens to all that water once it’s on the ground — most critically, in the places people live.

Cities in arid regions often aren’t designed to drain very effectively. In these areas, paved surfaces block rain from seeping into the earth below, forcing it into drainage systems that can easily become overwhelmed.

One recent study of Sharjah , the capital of the third-largest emirate in the U.A.E., found that the city’s rapid growth over the past half-century had made it vulnerable to flooding at far lower levels of rain than before.
