The Day Trip: Hot Air Balloon Ride in Temecula, California

Estimated Drive Time: 60 minutes (approximately 64 miles, via 91-East and I-15 South)

What’s Cool About It: Take the ultimate day trip with a scenic sunrise balloon flight over Temecula’s beautiful landscape with Grape Escape Hot Air Balloons. This 60-75 minute balloon ride gives you more than just an incredible view of Temecula’s wine country . The price of admission also includes a continental breakfast served picnic-style. Can you imagine having breakfast midair, sipping your mimosa, sparkling cider, coffee, or chilled champagne while suspended in the middle of a magnificent Southern California sunrise? Talk about romantic !

We admit… it would be hard to top the thrill of a hot air balloon ride, but Grape Escape Hot Air Balloons manages it by showering customers with some extra goodies. Each rider will receive a souvenir certificate of their flight, discounts on wine tasting at Europa Village Winery , and a 20% discount on La Scapatella private label champagne.

Gift vouchers are easily ordered from the company’s website and are customizable and printable, so if you’re looking to gift something special to someone who loves adventure, romance, whimsy, or wine… or all of the above… Grape Escape Hot Air Balloon Adventure is a great day trip option.

Just to note: While there are no children’s price tickets, children four feet and taller are more than welcome to ride the balloons (but not drink the champagne. Let’s keep that for the grownups.)

Pro-Tip: If hot air ballooning is your thing, you won’t want to miss the Temecula Valley Balloon and Wine Festival Flights . Dates vary by year, but flying then will let you join the over 50 balloons that will be gently navigating the soft summer air currents wafting over Temecula and enjoying breathtaking views of Lake Skinner and the surrounding valley. Your ride fee includes admission to the festival, a 45-60 minute sunrise festival flight, chilled champagne, orange juice, mimosas or water, and your souvenir certificate of flight.

The Day Trip: Universal Studios Hollywood

Estimated Drive Time: 50 minutes (44 miles via I-5 North and the 101N)

What’s Cool About It: Is there such a thing as too many destination theme parks? We don’t think so, which is why we’ve included the Universal Studios theme park in our list of amazing day trips.

The third in the power-trifecta of Southern California theme parks, Universal Studios is a different slice of magic. Enjoy the high-tech special effects that make rides like Transformers: The Ride 3D so pulse-pounding… or step into the magical world of Hogwarts alongside Harry, Hermione, and Ron as you pick out a wand at Olivander’s or take in a Quiddich match. Slake your post-match thirst over a pint of Butterbeer (and maybe some fish & chips) at the Three Broomsticks.

Of course, a visit to Universal Studios wouldn’t be complete without checking out the movie connection, so be sure to make time for the world-famous Studio Tour. This 60-minute tour is pretty much worth the day trip on its own. You’ll visit four acres of historic studio lot in “the largest set construction project in studio history”, all while listening to live narration and video narration by Jimmy Fallon. Your seat on the tram will give you a first-hand look at movie-making magic and movie history, with historic views of classics like Psycho’s Bates Motel and the giant shark from Jaws , and the modern miracle that is Peter Jackson’s reimagining of the classic King Kong in King Kong 360 3D , all without wearing out your shoes.

Pro-tip: While you can drive to Universal Studios, you can also take advantage of local tour packages which allow you to be picked up from a wide variety of easier-to-access locations like the Santa Monica Pier.

Want to Save Money? Online ticket sales are cheaper than buying at the gate, so a little pre-planning (or some quick mobile phone action) will save you some cash.

The Day Trip: San Diego Zoo

Estimated Drive Time: 80 minutes (86 miles via the 5 South)

What’s Cool About It: One of the finest zoos in the country is about 90 minutes away in San Diego. The San Diego Zoo has been voted the #1 zoo in the country and houses more than 3,700 animals from more than 650 species, including endangered ones like the black rhino, giant pandas, and more.

The San Diego Zoo makes for a great day trip from Orange County… whether you’re looking for an educational experience or if you’re just going to indulge the animal-lover in your life, the San Diego Zoo is worth a visit.

Don’t make the mistake of thinking that the zoo is just for kids. Want an unusual date idea? Enjoy a leisurely zoo stroll and then get your calories back with fine dining in the heart of the zoo at Albert’s Restaurant where you can have a leisurely meal in the tree canopies while overlooking a waterfall.

Reservations are recommended, portion sizes are satisfying, and in case you needed to feel better about eating there, all proceeds go toward supporting the animals at the zoo.

Pro-tip: When we say the restaurant is at the heart of the zoo, we mean it. Look for the special elevator near the Tree Top Cafe and go to Level 1 for Albert’s Restaurant. The entrance is right off the elevator.

The Day Trip: Moreno Valley

Estimated Drive Time: 46 minutes (50 miles via the 91E)

What’s Cool About It: Moreno Valley might not come springing into your mind when you’re thinking about great day trip destinations within 90 minutes of Orange County, but it should. It’s the second-largest city in Riverside County, and it’s home to attractions for outdoor enthusiasts and people who’d rather have a more structured indoor adventure.

If you’re looking for an educational day trip and you’ve already exhausted the museum offerings in Los Angeles, Moreno Valley’s Western Science Center is a fun and unique look at local fossils and exhibits. There are almost a million (yes, really, a million) different specimens in the museum’s collection.

Pro-Tip: The Western Science Center has a popular interactive exhibit that lets you search for a mammoth as if you’re a scientist on a dig. Your budding paleontologists will love it!

If you’re more interested in the gorgeous scenery around you rather than digging through it looking for fossils, check out Lake Perris . The lake area teems with wildflowers and a variety of native animals, including quail and coyotes.

If you’re an aircraft buff, visit the March Field Air Museum . Soak in the decades of aircraft history in this well-tended and affordable museum. Eighty well-maintained historical aircraft and over 30,000 artifacts (including personal letters) await your visit.

March Field does an amazing job of showing where the aircraft fit into the history of their era of warfare. If you want to have a glimpse into living history, March Field is where you want to go. Where else can you walk through a Vietnam-era firebase surrounded by massive military choppers, or visit the birth of the space age in 1957 in Mission Control? Marvel at the restored beauty of a B-17 bomber and the legendary Cold War SR-71 Blackbird.

Pro-Tip: March Field is closed on Mondays and major holidays. Check the website before you pile in the car on that road trip!

You might also want to know that children 4 and under are free, as are Active Duty, Active Guard, and Active Reserves (with their DOD ID cards). Military Veterans get free admission on select days; please check the website for details.

Bonus destination: The Southern California Railway Museum is just south of March Field and Lake Perris, and everyone with a little knows how much kids love trains. Visit the museum to see more than 200 historic train cars and locomotives and take a ride . Be sure to check the website before you go for train schedules.

The Day Trip: Catalina Island

Estimated Travel Time: 1 hour (via high-speed ferry from Newport Beach or Dana Point). If you’re in a hurry (or really want adventure) you can always grab a ride on a helicopter for a fast 15-minute jaunt to the beautiful island off the coast.

What’s Cool About It: No list of amazing day trips 90 minutes or less from Orange County would be complete without at least one mention of Catalina Island . With it’s amazing views, wonderful beaches, and gorgeous blue harbor, Southern California’s own island paradise is a quiet haven that’s perfect for a day excursion.

Once you step off the ferry, you can lounge on the beach, stroll the charming destination city of Avalon, or enjoy the rustic charm of Two Harbors. Of course, if one boat ride wasn’t enough for you, hop in a glass-bottom boat for a unique look at the local marine life in Lover’s Cove Marine Preserve.

Pro-Tip: Book a glass-bottom boat tour online more than seven (7) days in advance and receive 15% off your ticket price.

The ocean isn’t the only place where adventure awaits you. Catalina’s rugged interior landscape offers extreme tours, hikes , rock climbing walls, and even a rare and intoxicating chance to try your hand at falconing !

Once you’re done with your activities, the island boasts fine dining at no less than five great restaurants, so there’s no reason not to have a gorgeous, fresh meal before you hop back on the ferry to get back to the mainland.

The Anza Borrego badlands - one of The Best Day Trips from Orange County, California.

1. Anza Borrego Desert State Park, CA

Time from orange county: 2.25 hours.

If you have been around here for a while, then you already know how much I love the desert. When I was living in Orange County, one of my favorite day trips was a visit to Anza Borrego Desert State Park .

Anza Borrego is a vast and sprawling park, huge state park that sprawls across more than 500,000 acres. in fact, it is the largest state park in the entire USA! The rugged landscape is covered in everything from badlands to cacti to even bright wildflowers in the spring.

If you’re looking for a taste of the outdoors, Anza Borrego is a worthy choice. You’ll find plenty of opportunities for hiking, such as the stunning Palm Canyon Trail or my personal favorite trek called The Slot .

Monica wandering greater Palm Springs, one of The Best Day Trips from Orange County, California.

2. Palm Springs, CA

Time from orange county: 1.5 hours.

Palm Springs is a long-time favorite destination for Southern Californians, and for good reason. The colorful retro vibes against a mountainous desert backdrop is nothing short of stunning.

If you need a relaxing pool day or even a wild pool party, you can find that here. If you need a lively night out in trendy downtown, you can find it here. And, if you want unique trails like Andreas Canyon , you have it here.

Any Palm Springs day trip can be as touristy or as relaxing as you wish. With activities like the Aerial Tramway, the Palm Springs Art Museum, and Indian Canyons, this easy vacation can’t be beat.

Monica hiking in the desert of Joshua Tree, one of The Best Day Trips from Orange County, California.

3. Joshua Tree National Park

Time from orange county: 2 hours.

Not too far from Palm Springs is another one of my desert favorites: Joshua Tree National Park. I have an incredible one day itinerary already created for you that will allow you to explore unique hikes, mind-boggling rock formations, and alien-like landscapes.

Artists and creatives will enjoy the endless opportunities for yoga, photography, and music. Outdoorsy folks have lots of hiking trails and rock-climbing at their fingertips. Everyone needs to experience this desert park at least once in their life… but if you;re like me, once won’t nearly be enough!

TIME FROM orange county: 1.5 HOURS

For those craving the beach, one of my favorite areas to explore (and one of the most scenic day trips from Orange County) is a drive up to Malibu.

Malibu seems to have it all. With the deep blue ocean waters of the Pacific, the brush-covered hills and mountains, local wineries, and tons of great food, what’s not to like?

One day in Malibu is enough time to get a small taste of he hiking, the one of a kind beaches, and the epic surfing if you like. Though it’s technically within LA County, it feels a world away!

5. Mojave National Preserve

Time from orange county: 3 hours.

This hidden gem in the desert is often overlooked, but that is a mistake, my friends. Though relatively unknown to the masses, this is the place to go if you want the landscapes of Joshua Tree but the crowds of Montana. What I mean is, you can really get away from it all in the Mojave National Preserve .

Some of the highlights include hiking along intense and rugged trails or camping in one of the two designated sights within the park. There is also an underground lava tube for those wanting to add a little adventure in their life!

An orange sunset over Santa Barbara architecture, one of The Best Day Trips from Orange County, California.

6. Santa Barbara

Time from orange county: 2.5 hours.

Santa Barbara is one of those quaint and quiet towns lining the ocean that feels like another planet. The Spanish and Mediterranean vibes will quickly transport you right out of California!

In just one day in Santa Barbara , you can cover everything from strolling around an artists’ village to playing volleyball on the beach to unexpected cave hikes . And, there are some pretty incredible art installations, both outdoors as well as inside the art museum and Funk Zone.

Loads of trendy breweries and eateries line the streets. This is one of the most calm Orange County day trips you could choose!

7. The Salton Sea

Time from orange county: 2.25 hours.

For those who like to visit the weird and quirky, the Salton Sea might just be for you.

This surprisingly large body of water has become a bit of an abandoned oddity. It is one of the world’s lowest spots on earth at -227 below sea level, though not as low as Badwater Basin in Death Valley .

This shallow body of water has a high saline content and thus not many types of fish can live here. In fact, I’ve often seen dead fish on the land and cracked dry earth, which all adds to the creepy abandoned feel. It’s definitely odd, but this is a great spot for photography!

The small town of Solvang is located just a bit farther north than Santa Barbara. Depending on how much time you take in Santa Barbara, you might be able to tack Solvang on to the same day trip itinerary. Maybe !

Solvang has quite a bit to explore on it’s own. This small and now-touristy Danish town was founded by settlers straight from Denmark. Their lasting impressions can be seen all around town, from the windmills to the horse-drawn carriages to the architecture and the food.

Visiting Solvang is like going overseas in just a short drive! It’s definitely a town not to be missed.

9. Temecula

Time from orange county: 1 hour.

Temecula is a cute winery-laden area just one hour away, and is one of the easiest day trips from Orange County that you can possibly choose. You’ll find everything from vineyards to specialty olive oils to hot air balloon rides.

This was an easy trip back in the day when I would have out of town visitors, and has enough to explore that most people, even non-wine-drinkers, can enjoy. The downtown is cute and walkable as well, with a collection of historic buildings, hotels, and restaurants.

10. Los Angeles

Even though I’m not exactly a “city person”, if you haven’t been to LA, you definitely need to visit. It is sprawling, so be prepared to drive and walk a lot!

One of the major touristy draws is the iconic Hollywood Sign, which you can actually hike to (hiking details can be found in my 52 Hikes in Southern California e-book.)

Those interested in visual arts will find tons of great museums, like LACMA and The Broad and The Getty. Exhibitions change constantly so there is always something new to see. History buffs will love the LA Brea Tar Pits and the Natural History Museum. And, shoppers will get a kick out of Rodeo Drive.

Sunset over the San Diego shore, one of The Best Day Trips from Orange County, California.

11. San Diego

Time from orange county: 1.5 hours.

San Diego is one of those idyllic spots that usually lives up to the hype. With nearly-perfect year round weather, beautiful beaches, and a laid back feel, this is a great place to get away from it all, even for a day.

Explore Little Italy and the Gaslamp Quarter for some local culture and great eats. Head to Torrey Pines State Park for some epic beach hiking. La Jolla Cove is great place for wildlife viewing. And, Balboa Park never disappoints!

12. Catalina Island

Time from orange county: 2.5 hours (depending on the ferry).

Catalina Island is another easy escape that couldn’t feel farther away from the busy cities of California. You’ll drive up to Long Beach or San Pedro where the ferries depart, and ride a very scenic ferry over to the island.

There are no cars allowed here, which makes the whole environment incredibly peaceful. Golf carts zip around, colorful island flora grows along the land, and you can choose to rent kayaks, lounge on the beach, play golf, or see a movie all in Avalon.

It may take a little more effort to get to Catalina Island, but this day trip is well worth the effort!

These are some of my favorite day trips from Orange County. There is bound to be something on this list that appeals to everyone! From deserts to cities to mountains and beaches, there is so much to choose from!

27 Best Day Trips from Los Angeles, CA – From a Local

What are the best day trips from Los Angeles? After living in LA for the past 16 years and exploring the surrounding areas, we can confidently say these are the best day trips from Los Angeles.

One of the many reasons we love living in Southern California is that wherever you are, you can drive an hour or two in one direction and land in a different landscape, vibe, charm, and culture.

Go West, and you’ll hit the beaches.

Go East, and you’ll find the desert.

Go North and see the snow.

Go South, and hit some wineries.

There are many things to do around and near Los Angeles, with only a 1-3 hour drive from DTLA . Start your day trip early morning and drive back after dinnertime.

With some of the most beautiful coastal beach communities in Southern California, there is no reason why you should not be heading out on day trips to explore them.

Sometimes, it’s possible to take early flights out of Los Angeles to destinations that are only an hour or so plane ride away. We once flew out early morning to Las Vegas to meet my best friend and were back home by midnight.

By all means, any of these day trips can also be turned into great weekend getaways. Book a hotel the morning of and stay overnight. Everyone needs to enjoy a quick getaway now and then.

Day trips have always been our preference because we like returning home to our dogs. Sometimes dog sitters can be difficult to schedule, and my dogs don’t travel.

Having these day trips helps quench our wanderlust until our next big vacation. They are vital and allow us to breathe. Plus, getting out and exploring what’s in your backyard is important. Day trips are an excellent way.

In this article, we share some of the best day trips from Los Angeles we have taken over the years. We hope it will inspire you to get out and explore what Southern California offers.

When we started writing out this list of day trips from Los Angeles, we didn’t realize we’d experienced so much in the 16 years of living in Los Angeles. There is still so much of Southern California we have yet to experience and discover. We can’t wait to get in the car and take more day trips.

Note that a few of these destinations are technically in Los Angeles County. However, if you live in Los Angeles, you know it takes about 1 hour or 2 to get anywhere outside and into the city of Los Angeles. So if you are staying in Marina del Rey and are planning to visit Pasadena, you know that’s a day trip.

We also included the driving time to these destinations from Downtown Los Angeles.

boats in the santa barbara harbor

Branded as the American Riviera, Santa Barbara, a Central California coastal city, is a great day trip for any time of year. Its spectacular surroundings of the Santa Ynez mountains and the pacific ocean will tempt you to stay longer.

It’s one of our favorite coastal cities, and we try to take a day trip to Santa Barbara once a year.

We love to explore State Street, the city’s main thoroughfare, and enjoy the Spanish, Victoria, and Art Deco architecture you’ll find throughout. We’ll then head down to Fisherman’s Wharf and continue towards the harbor, where we’ll sometimes spot seals.

crosswalk to danish bakery in old town

This popular Danish village is a must-visit and one of the best day trips from Los Angeles. Whenever we have company from out of state, we bring them here so they can experience something different outside of Hollywood Blvd.

Danish-style architecture is always great fun. This picturesque town will make you feel like you’re suddenly transported into another country.

While some people’s favorite thing to do is go wine tasting, we like to visit all the bakeries and stop at Solvang’s Restaurant for aebleskivers.

  • Shop the boutiques and check out some of the wooden shoes.

While Oak Glen is a popular fall destination, you can visit year-round to enjoy the different seasons. There are always different activities and festivals throughout the year. Riley’s Farm has historical events and other dinner shows.

We love to go there for all the yummy treats and to enjoy all the local activities and festivals, including stocking up on jams and treats at Mom’s Orchards.

  • Go apple picking and raspberry picking.
  • Try the different ciders and wines offered at the other orchards.
  • Participate in kid-friendly activities like train rides, petting zoos, and more at Oak Tree Village.

Big Bear Lake in the San Bernardino Mountains is a popular destination here in Southern California. This is where locals go to see and enjoy the snow. It is known for its four seasons. You can experience Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter activities at designated times of the year.

Plan your day to Big Bear accordingly. If you’re chasing fall colors, Ocotober-November would be the best time to visit.

6. Lake Arrowhead, CA

lake arrowhead california

If you’re looking for a day trip from Los Angeles that feels like a world away, Lake Arrowhead is the perfect destination. Nestled in the San Bernardino Mountains, this beautiful lake is often compared to ‘the Alps’ of Southern California.

Visitors can take a scenic drive around the lake, enjoy the stunning mountain views, or take a boat tour to learn more about the area’s history and wildlife. The lake is private property, so public access is limited. Booking a boat tour is the best way to see it in close proximity. If you decide to book a rental for the weekend, we suggest finding something with lake access.

The town also has a charming village area with cute shops and restaurants, making it a great place to explore and relax.

We’d say a day or an overnight in Lake Arrowhead is enough, as it is a quieter town.

  • Explore and shop at Lake Arrowhead Village.
  • Tour the lake with Lake Arrowhead Queen Boat Tour.
  • Enjoy the activities at Sky Park Santa’s Village.
  • Hike the Will Abell Memorial Trail for beautiful views of Lake Arrowhead.

8. Long Beach, CA

Drive Time: 30 minutes

View of the bow of the Queen Mary anchored in the Long Beach bay

Long Beach is located in Los Angeles County, California, but you’re lucky to get there on a good day in 30 minutes. Long Beach is best known for its port, the second largest in the United States. It’s where The Queen Mary ship resides, and cruisers set sail from on Carvinal cruise ships.

We love Long Beach beach day trips because we almost always end up at our favorite Greek restaurant in the city and love exploring the charming neighborhood of Naples Island.

You can easily make multiple day trips throughout the year to enjoy everything it offers. You also want to watch for local annual festivals so you can plan as several take place throughout the year.

Some of the things you can do on your day trip there are:

  • Visit and take a self-guided tour of The Queen Mary ship.
  • See the marine life at the Aquarium of the Pacific .
  • Take a stroll and picnic at Bluff Park.

9. Disneyland in Anaheim, CA

Drive Time: 45 minutes

easy day trips from orange county

One of the best reasons to visit Anaheim is Disneyland Park. We used to be regular-season pass holders who made the trip to the Disneyland theme park 1-2 times a month. It is a great day trip for everyone.

You don’t need passes to enjoy Disney, though. The best part about this theme park is that it can be done in a day or less. It’s not as overwhelmingly huge as Disney World in Florida.

Alternatively, a day trip to Downtown Disney can be just as fun as there is sometimes live music and other activities. Visit the Lego store, pick up special Disney treats at Marceline’s Confectionary, and make dinner reservations at one of their many restaurants.

Top Foodie Pick: Beignets at Ralph Brennan’s Jazz’s Kitchen (outside the theme park) or at Port Orleans French Quarter (inside Disneyland) [ side note: you can read about the real New Orleans French Quarter here ]. For dinner reservations at Steakhouse 55 (outside the theme park) or Carthay Circle (inside California Adventure)

Huntington Beach is one of the most popular beach cities in Southern California, known as Surf City USA, with 10 miles of coastline. The city is in Orange County, known for its surfing culture and waves. The downtown area has a lively atmosphere with restaurants, bars, and shops.

The Huntington Beach Pier is great for walking, relaxing, and taking photos. There are also bike trails that run along the beach. And, if you have kids, there’s a small amusement park called Pirates Cove.

Planning a day trip with your dog? While California is extremely dog-friendly, Huntington Beach is one of the best coastal cities to take your canine companion to, as it has a dog beach. We took our first dog here ( may she RIP ) for the day with friends; she had a blast, and so did we.

  • Visit downtown Huntington Beach.
  • Plan to take surfing lessons .
  • If you love surfing, visit Huntington Beach International Surf Museum .

One of the most popular day trips from Los Angeles is to visit Newport Beach. It’s only about a 1-hour drive, and it’s worth it. Newport Beach is known for its amazing beaches, perfect waves for surfing, and beautiful homes. It is one of our favorite coastal cities in Southern California.

We spend many weekend days in Newport Beach throughout the year. Our favorite is early mornings at the beach before the crowds arrive. It’s the best time to sit by the shore and enjoy the peacefulness and salty air.

The Balboa Peninsula is the main area of Newport Beach and is a great place to walk around, take in the ocean views, have a picnic, and enjoy some people-watching. Plenty of boat rentals and fishing charters are available if you want to get out on the water. And if you’re looking for a romantic evening, consider having dinner at one of the many waterfront restaurants.

Balboa Island is a small, charming island located in Newport Beach. It is a popular spot for locals and visitors. This is a day trip on its own because you can visit this charming seaside neighborhood full of beautiful beaches, homes, shops, and dining. We just love walking around and

The fun part is driving your car onto a ferry from the Balboa Peninsula to Balboa Island. You can also take a long way around and drive over the Marine Avenue Bridge to Balboa Island.

Laguna Beach is about an hour’s drive from Los Angeles, but it feels like a world away. The small city is charming with its unique character and vibe.

The famous small coastal city Laguna Beach is the next stopover off the Pacific Coast Highway, only 20 minutes from Newport Beach. If you have time after Newport Beach, you may want to ride to Laguna Beach or save it for another day trip.

There are many things to do in Laguna Beach, depending on what you want to do for the day. The best way to spend a day in Laguna Beach is to walk around downtown, which is full of shops, art galleries, and restaurants.

We love to walk around town, grab lunch and then head over to Heisler Park. But there is much more to be discovered in Laguna.

Did you know Victoria Beach in Laguna has old ruins called The Pirate Tower?

  • Head down to one of their many beaches.

looking up at the ferris wheel at irvine spectrum center

Irvine is a family-friendly city in Orange County filled with activities that will keep everyone entertained all day long just by visiting the Irvine Spectrum Center. When my nieces lived nearby, we drove down many times because there was always something to do in Irvine.

California loves its outdoor shopping malls, and the one in Irvine does not disappoint. The Irvine Spectrum Center is more than a shopping center. It features a Ferris wheel, a kiddie train ride, and a carousel. This is a great spot to visit to get some steps in, do a little shopping, keep the kids entertained, and have dinner.

But a shopping mall that doubles as a quasi-amusement park is not all that Irvine offers. You can plan and mix and match multiple activities in a day:

  • You can visit Orange Country Great Park .
  • Plan to take a hike at the Bommer Canyon Trail .
  • Take your kids to the Pretend City Children’s Museum.

La Jolla is a coastal town in San Diego, about 2 hours from Los Angeles. The town is known for its gorgeous views of the Pacific Ocean, rugged coastline, and sea lions that can sometimes be heard as you drive along the coast.

We love spending long weekends here but have also driven the 2 hours just for a day trip to see the sea lions. We also love to walk the La Jolla Coast Walk Trail and meander around downtown.

windmills in the palm springs desert

Palm Springs is a desert oasis located in Riverside County of Southern California. The city is known for its hot weather, mid-century modern architecture, and resorts. It is one of the most popular destinations for Angelenos to escape and enjoy a nice desert getaway. They’ll rent an Airbnb with a pool and spend a few days there.

That said, a Los Angeles day trip to Palm is doable. We like to make the day trip now and then. We get our fill of delicious dates (yes, the fruit) that you’ll find in Palm Springs and then head back home at the end of the day.

Now, you’ll know you’re in Palm Springs when you start seeing all the windmills in the middle of the desert. They greet you as you make your way in.

Not far from Dana Point in Orange County, you’ll find the lovely city of San Juan Capistrano in Orange County. This city is known to be the home to the “Jewel of the California Missions.”

This is a perfect Los Angeles day trip because this charming city has it all, history, delicious food, antique shops, and even a petting zoo for ideas.

One of the highlights is Mission San Juan Capistrano, founded in 1776. The ruins of the Great Old Church still stand today, and it’s a fantastic site to experience filled with history. The grounds are so lovely to enjoy a beautiful Spring day when the flowers are beginning. Our favorite is the lemon trees you find by the courtyard entrance.

Rios Historic District is another highlight that can’t be missed. It’s the oldest residential neighborhood in California, with quaint shops and restaurants that will leave you bedazzled.

Here are some things you can do in a day:

  • Explore downtown San Juan Capistrano and Los Rios Historic District.
  • Plan high tea at the Tea House on Los Rios (reservations recommended).
  • Stop by for coffee at the charming Hidden House Coffee and sit outside their outdoor patio.
  • Visit the historic landmark Mission San Juan Capistrano .
  • Take the kids to Zoomars Petting Zoo .

Top Foodie Pick: There are so many delicious places to eat here. We love to eat lunch at Trevor on the Tracks and then dinner Ciao Pasta Trattoria for some great Italian cuisine.

A couple of hour drive South, you can take a day trip to Carlsbad, California, known as “The Village by the Sea.” The small town in North San Diego has a quaint downtown area filled with shops, restaurants, and plenty of activities.

You can plan an entire day with the family. Depending on the time of year, attractions like The Flower Fields are more popular than others and are only open in the Spring.

  • Take a stroll along the Carlsbad Sea Wall Trail .
  • Visit The Flower Fields , where visitors can see acres of vibrant flowers in bloom.
  • Families with young children will enjoy a visit to Legoland.
  • Go strawberry picking a Carlsbad Strawberry Company and check out their sunflower maze.
  • Go shopping at the Carlsbad Premium Outlets.

23. The Antelope Valley Poppy Reserve in Lancaster

Another great day trip in Los Angeles during the Spring is Antelope Valley in Lancaster. Poppies and wildflowers sprout across the hills and fields, making it a beautiful scenic drive.

You can plan to visit the Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve in the Spring, especially if there is a super bloom. It’s a great way to spend the day with friends and family. Get your comfy shoes ready to hike trails and get your fill of the poppy season.

And every year, towards the end of the poppy season, Lancaster has a Poppy Festival filled with many fun activities, food stands, artistry, and other entertainment. It’s a fun way to spend a day.

24. Santa Catalina Island, CA

Ferry: 1 hour 30 minutes

boats anchored in avalon bay overlook catalina island

Santa Catalina Island is one of California’s channel islands. A quick day trip to Catalina Island is possible with little planning. You won’t get to do or see everything, but you have an exciting day taking ferry rides and exploring some of the island’s offerings.

It’s the closest escape to what will remind you of a Mediterranean village, only on the Pacific coast.

Book a round-trip ticket ferry ride to Avalon from the closest port to you. Book the earliest ferry ride as your departure and the last ferry ride on your return.

Once you arrive…

  • You can explore Avalon .
  • Spend the day at the beach or rent a cabana at the beach club.
  • Go scuba diving.
  • Rent a bike or golf cart.
  • Take a submarine tour .
  • Book a zip-lining adventure.

25. San Francisco

Flight: 1 hour 15 minutes

golden gate bridge in san francisco california

We mentioned earlier that a day trip to San Francisco in Northern California is possible. It would be a tight schedule, depending on what you plan to do for the day.

You can book the first flight out in the morning and the latest return flight. Or you can stay overnight if you want to do a full 24 hours and take a morning flight out the next day.

Our friends woke up one morning and decided to take a 6-hour road trip to San Francisco to see the Golden Gate Bridge. Then they drove back to LA on the same day. This is one of those times that the saying, “the journey is part of the adventure,” applies.

We recommend flying in to get the most out of your day. Prioritize what you’d like to do the most and plan your day. We couldn’t wait to see the Golden Gate Bridge and Fisherman’s Wharf, eat ice cream at Ghiradelli’s, and explore San Francisco’s architecture.

Here are some of the things you can do in San Francisco:

  • See and-or walk the Golden Gate Bridge.
  • Explore Fisherman’s Wharf and Ghiradelli’s Square.
  • Consider booking a tour of Alcatraz.
  • Visit the Painted Ladies.
  • Eat your way through Little Italy and Chinatown.

Foodie Pick: Sear’s Fine Food for breakfast or brunch. They have the best Swedish mini pancakes and corn beef hash.

26. Pasadena

Drive Time: 20 minutes

pool of water leading to the view of pasadena city hall

While technically in Los Angeles County and a 20-minute ride from Downtown (on a good traffic day), Pasadena is a city in the San Gabriel Mountains. It is a perfect day trip that doesn’t require you to spend hours driving to get to, and it’s filled with plenty to see and do in the City of Roses . You can even make it in time to enjoy brunch in Pasadena .

While we have resided in Pasadena for 8 years now, we continue to make discoveries and enjoy all the foodie eats this city offers.

Everyone usually visits and starts their day in Old Town Pasadena shopping, grabbing a matcha tea at Coffee + Plants , authentic churros at Amara’s Cafe , or brunch at Russell’s – a few of our favorite spots. There is more in this city beyond Old Pasadena that can fulfill not only a day but a series of days of activities.

Here are some ideas of what to do in Pasadena, mix and match to plan your day:

  • Plan an Eaton Canyon Falls hike – our local waterfall.
  • Explore one of several botanical gardens in Pasadena , including Descanso Gardens , which has holiday events like Carved and Enchanted.
  • Spend some time at the Simon Norton Museum .
  • Book a walking tour and get to know our local history.
  • Visit Dot’s Cafe for cupcakes.
  • See the Colorado Street Bridge from Desiderio Neighborhood Park.
  • Come for the Rose Bowl Flea Market on the 2nd Sunday of every month.

Top Foodie Pick: There are many fantastic restaurants in Pasadena .

27. Monrovia

Drive Time: 35 minutes

featured blog image | things to do in monrovia ca

Monrovia is a great city in San Gabriel Valley, not far from Pasadena. Myrtle Avenue in Old Town is so picturesque with mountains as it’s a backdrop and quaint tree-lined street we call it Mayberry USA.

What adds to Monrovia’s charm is the year-round, family-friendly activities and events, from foodie festivals, classic car shows, breakfast with Santa, and much more. Keep up to date with events here . They also have a Friday Street Fair, where families come for a safe family fun night.

What do to with a day in Monrovia?

  • Explore Old Town Monrovia and stroll down Myrtle Ave.
  • Have a Cuban pastry at Merengues or a Mexican brunch at Cafe de Olla .
  • Check out their family street fair and farmer’s market on Friday nights.

Los Angeles Day Trips FAQs

car driving past a skyline view of downtown los angeles at sunset

Do you need a car to take Los Angeles day trips?

It depends on where you’re going. Some day trips from Los Angeles can be made without a car, such as taking the Amtrak to destinations like Santa Barbara or San Diego. However, having a car can provide more flexibility and allow you to explore more remote areas or take scenic drives.

If you plan to visit multiple attractions in one day, a car can save time and be more convenient.

We highly recommend tourists visiting Los Angeles and looking to make some day trips to rent a car. You’ll need it for day trips and just to get around LA.

What are the must-do day trips from Los Angeles?

If we only had to narrow it down to a few destinations from this list of day trips from Los Angeles, we’d take day trips to Santa Barbara, Newport Beach, La Jolla, and Disneyland.

What island is one hour away from LA?

Catalina Island is a 45-minute ferry ride away from Los Angeles. Many visitors take day trips from Los Angeles to Catalina Island year around.

What city is 3 hours away from Los Angeles?

While not on this list, San Luis Obispo is a popular destination 3 hours from Los Angeles.

12 Easy Hikes in Orange County with an Amazing View

Orange County is lucky to have a bunch of amazing hikes…and such a wide variety too. From super easy ocean view hikes to difficult hikes that take you to the top of the mountain, we have them here.

In this post, I am sharing some of the best easy hikes in Orange County that have an amazing view. No, you don’t have to be an avid hiker or prepare for a super intense workout to enjoy them. Most of these hikes are easy enough that even someone without any hiking experience at all can do!

Most of these are ocean view hikes, but a couple of them have views of some really pretty (and unexpected) landscape.

We are definitely spoiled living in Orange County.

1. West Ridge Trail to Top of the World

This popular hike in Aliso and Wood Canyons Wilderness Park will take you to an amazing 360 view of Orange County. You will have an ocean view of Laguna Beach on one side, and a great view of Saddleback Mountain on the other.

This out & back trail is 4.5 miles and has just enough hills to get your heart pumping a little bit, but not enough to rate this as a difficult hike. The trail is extra wide so hikers and bikers can easily share, plus leashed doggies are allowed to hike!

The reason I like this trail so much is not only because of the views but also because of the rest area at Top of the World . There are benches you can use as well as a full park with restrooms. It’s a great place to relax halfway through the hike and take it all in. The only downside of this hike is that there is no shade, so going in the middle of the day in summer is going to be a little uncomfortable.

View of The Sinks in Limestone Canyon

2. The Sinks at Limestone Canyon

What some might consider a hidden gem in Orange County, “The Sinks” are a must-see! The Sinks are an amazing geological formation that appears to be sort of a mini Grand Canyon. That’s why this area is sometimes called “The Grand Canyon of Orange County”.

There are two ways to see The Sinks, from the East viewing platform and from the West. The hike to the west viewing platform is 7.8 miles, but it doesn’t have any technical or difficult sections. It is mostly flat and does have a few shaded areas here and there. If you also want to see the view from the East viewing platform, you’ll just need to add an extra mile or so to your hike.

Hiking to The Sinks is extra special and is only available during scheduled activities or open-access days with the Irvine Ranch Conservancy . The public cannot freely access this park. The IRC does have plenty of guided hikes and bike rides to The Sinks, or you can explore on your own during the open-access day. Open-access days typically happen once every three months.

Dana Point Headlands Trail one of the best easy hikes in Orange County

3. Dana Point Headlands Trail

One of the most beautiful, and definitely one of the easiest hikes in Orange County is the Dana Point Headlands Trail. On this hike, you will have views of the ocean, the Dana Point Marina, and lots of wildflowers if you go during spring.

You can park for free at Strand Vista Park . Walk up the residential hill which is Dana Strand Road and find the trailhead on the right. The entire loop is about 3 miles and includes dirt and paved pathways as well as a couple of stairways. The Dana Point Nature Interpretive Center is about halfway through the hike if you want to stop in. There is no shade on this hike, but the temperature is typically cooler this close to the ocean.

For a little bonus, take a hike to the Dana Point Sea Cave! This easy 1.5-mile hike will take you underneath the Headlands Trail to a sea cave so large that several people can sit inside of it. You should only visit the Dana Point Sea Cave during low tide.

View from Red Rock Canyon Trail in Whiting Ranch Wilderness Park

4. Red Rock Canyon Trail in Whiting Ranch

You probably won’t even believe that you are in the middle of Southern California when you reach the end of this trail. The name pretty much says it all. Red Rock Canyon is a must-see in the OC.

This easy out & back hike begins at the Borrego Staging Area in Whiting Ranch Wilderness Park, where you will pay $3 for parking. The hike is about 4 miles and has shaded areas near the beginning. After about the halfway point, there is no shade, unfortunately. I would avoid this hike during summer days, but you can definitely go early morning.

At the end of the trail, you will see the red rock canyon area. This section used to be open but since the stone was getting damaged, barriers were put up to keep it protected. But you can still get some really pretty photos.

5. Spur Ridge Lookout in Laguna Coast

If you are looking for hiking trails with ocean views over Laguna Beach, Laguna Coast Wilderness Park is the way to go. This park is huge and has lots of different trails including a few that lead to the hilltops directly above Laguna Beach.

Most of the trails in this park are rated as moderate or difficult, but I have one easier option for you. Spur Ridge to Boat Road Trail isn’t too bad and there is an awesome lookout point. After the lookout point, you can decide if you want to continue hiking Boat Road Trail for a total of 4 miles or not. If not, just turn back!

There is free residential parking on Dartmoor Street , where you can find the start of the trail called Spur Ridge. Parking in Laguna Beach can be somewhat of a challenge at times, so get there early and pay attention to the street signs. At the intersection of Spur Ridge and Boat Road trails, head left to stay on Spur Ridge for the lookout point.

6. Bolsa Chica Wetlands

The Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve is a coastal estuary in Huntington Beach and a very popular birding area. If you are a wildlife photographer you will be in heaven here. This 1,400-acre wetland reserve is home to many wildlife species, wildflowers in the spring, and ocean views. It’s the perfect place to connect with nature.

There are a few trails to hike and all of them are easy and have no elevation gain. If you hike all of them it will be around 5 miles. You can even bring a stroller or wheelchair on these trails, but sorry no doggies! Bring your sunhat because there is no shade on these trails. For the best chance at seeing wildlife, visit in the early morning hours of winter or summer.

There are a couple of places to park, but the preferred parking lot for Bolsa Chica is at the Interpretive Center , which has free parking. You can also take free tours of the Bolsa Chica wetlands with Amigos de Bolsa Chica or the Bolsa Chica Land Trust .

San Clemente Beach Trail

7. San Clemente Beach Trail

This trail in San Clemente might be one of the most unique hiking trails in Orange County. For the entire length of the trail, you are not only walking next to the ocean but also next to train tracks, so you get to watch the trains go by. Plus, the trail brings you through a good surf spot and the San Clemente Pier. So much action!

This 4.6-mile out & back trail is flat and unshaded. Bikers and doggies are welcome, and I don’t see any issues with bringing a stroller or a wheelchair either.

You can start your hike by parking at the San Clemente Metrolink Station or at Calafia State Park . Stop at the San Clemente Pier, grab some gelato, and enjoy the views mid-hike. For even more action, watch the surfers at T-Street Beach, just south of the pier.

For an extended hike, you can add in the Sea Summit Trail, number 11 on this list. You’ll have panoramic ocean views from the hills above!

Ocean view from Hicks Haul Road fitness hike

8. Hicks Haul Road

If you are up for it, this 3.5-mile paved trail is an awesome place for a cardio hike. What’s cool about Hicks Haul Road is that it’s not open to the public, so the trail won’t be busy. You have to sign up for a scheduled activity through the Irvine Ranch Conservancy . It also pretty cool that on a clear day you can see all the way out to Catalina Island!

The IRC offers a lot of fitness hikes at Hicks Haul Road which typically take place during the week. This is also one of the few trails in OC where Full Moon Hikes are offered, which I highly recommend!

To sign up for an activity, visit the IRC website . The activities are free and are always led by trained volunteers and docents. The best time to visit is during the springtime when you can see some pretty wildflowers.

Easy Hikes in Orange County at Crystal Cove State Park

9. Moro Canyon in Crystal Cove

Although the park rates this as a difficult hike, I personally didn’t find it that difficult. If you are a regular hiker this will be easy for you, if not, don’t attempt this one. This beautiful hike in Crystal Cove State Park will take you on a loop with an ocean view at the end. For an extra bonus, you can walk to the beach afterward!

Park at the Moro Kiosk/Day Use Area or at the Visitor Center/Ranger Station and pay the $15 fee. The loop that you want to follow is the “difficult loop trail” on this map . Come prepared with plenty of water and a sun hat since there is no shade.

Newport Back Bay is one of the top 10 easy hikes in Orange County

10. Newport’s Back Bay Loop

This super popular hike in Newport Beach loops around the Upper Newport Bay Nature Preserve and Ecological Reserve, or better known as the Back Bay. Here you have 10.5 miles of trail to explore on foot, bike, or even on the water. The Back Bay is a great birding area too, and several endangered species make it their home.

There are several entrance points to the Back Bay Loop, but I prefer starting at the Peter and Mary Muth Interpretive Center . This is a great point to begin because you can stop into the center and learn more about the area. Make your way to Vista Point , which is about 2 miles in, then you can decide if you want to continue or turn back.

The trail itself is easy and there are no technical sections, but it is a long trail. Hike as little or as much as you would like. Doggies are allowed on this one too! Bring a sunhat since there is no shade available. Best time to visit? All year long, but I love seeing the wildflowers in the spring!

Views over San Clemente from the Sea Summit Trail

11. Sea Summit Trail

This trail system with a total of 4 miles takes you through the hills above San Clemente. From the start of the trail you can see the beautiful turquoise water (it really looks like this!). As you get closer you will be able to hear the waves and watch the surfers. Benches are scattered throughout the trail so you can hang out for a while and take it all in.

There are several areas to enter the trail system and the city directs people to park at Jim Johnson Memorial Sports Park or North Beach. I parked at The Outlets at San Clemente and walked across the street to the Sea Summit Trailhead . The trail is dog friendly and some of it is wheelchair and stroller friendly until you get to the stairs near the ocean.

If you are looking for an extended hike you can walk from the Sea Summit Trail to the San Clemente Beach Trail (number 7 on this list).

View of Dana Point from Badlands Park Trail.

12. Badlands Park Trail

This super easy dog-friendly hike snakes behind a residential area and offers views of Laguna Beach and Dana Point. Most of the hike includes views of Table Rock and Thousand Steps but once you climb a small hill you will have a great view of Dana Point.

The trail begins at Badlands Park in Laguna Niguel. You can park on Isle Vista and head into the park entrance towards the right side of the roundabout loop. Once inside the park, head left and look for the wooden stairs on the right side of the trail. Continue left at the bottom of the stairs.

This is a really easy hike and takes around 45 minutes to complete. There are no technical sections, just a very small hill towards the end. Dogs are welcome on this hike, but unfortunately, strollers are not.

That sums up my favorite easy hikes in Orange County! Which of these hikes looks the most appealing to you?

‘a huge kiss and make up:’ disney world, florida leaders plot major expansion, trump media shares swing wildly and then tumble a day after former president was convicted.

easy day trips from orange county

Shares of Trump Media & Technology Group closed lower Friday after swinging wildly over the course of the day following the conviction of former President Donald Trump in his hush money trial.

After the U.S. stock markets closed Thursday, a New York jury found Trump guilty of falsifying business records in a scheme to illegally influence the 2016 election through hush money payments to a porn actor who said the two had sex.

After rising more than 2% at the opening of trading Friday, the shares ended the day down 5.3%.

The stock, which trades under the ticker symbol “DJT,” has been extraordinarily volatile since its debut in late March, joining the group of meme stocks that are prone to ricochet from highs to lows as small-pocketed investors attempt to catch an upward momentum swing at the right time.

The stock has tripled this year, in the process frequently making double-digit percentage moves either higher or lower on a single day. It peaked at nearly $80 in intraday trading on March 26. For context, the S&P 500 is up almost 10% year to date.

In a filing with the U.S. Securities & Exchange Commission before going public, Trump Media warned investors of the potential pitfalls faced by the former president and the adverse affect it might have on the stock.

“President Donald J. Trump is the subject of numerous legal proceedings, the scope and scale of which are unprecedented for a former President of the United States and current candidate for that office. An adverse outcome in one or more of the ongoing legal proceedings in which President Donald J. Trump is involved could negatively impact TMTG and its Truth Social platform.”

Earlier this month, Trump Media reported that it lost more than $300 million last quarter , according to its first earnings report as a publicly traded company .

For the three-month period that ended March 31, the company posted a loss of $327.6 million, which it said included $311 million in non-cash expenses related to its merger with a company called Digital World Acquisition Corp. DWAC was an example of what’s known as a special purpose acquisition company, or SPAC, which can give young companies quicker and easier routes to getting their shares trading publicly, but with much less scrutiny.

Trump Media & Technology fired an auditor this month that federal regulators recently charged with “massive fraud.” The media company dismissed BF Borgers as its independent public accounting firm on May 3, delaying the filing of its quarterly earnings report.

Trump Media had previously cycled through at least two other auditors — one that resigned in July 2023, and another that was terminated by its board in March, just as it was rehiring BF Borgers.

Trump was charged with 34 counts of falsifying business records at his company in connection with an alleged scheme to hide potentially embarrassing stories about him during his 2016 Republican presidential election campaign.

The charge, a felony, arose from reimbursements paid to then-Trump lawyer Michael Cohen after he made a $130,000 hush money payment to porn actor Stormy Daniels to silence her claims of an extramarital sexual encounter with Trump in 2006. Trump was accused of misrepresenting Cohen’s reimbursements as legal expenses to hide that they were tied to a hush money payment.

Trump’s defense contended that the Cohen payments were for legitimate legal services.
