Esther Povitsky on Hulu’s Dollface, Her New Standup Set, and Where She Finds Creative Inspiration

The comedian to watch also shares the joy and importance of working in female-dominated spaces

Esther Povitsky on Hulu’s Dollface, Her New Standup Set, and Where She Finds Creative Inspiration

“I went to Whitney Cummings’ Halloween party last night,” Esther Povitsky is saying over Zoom from Los Angeles. She’s referring to the leftover braids loosely tied in her hair. “I ate way too much popcorn… I have a hangover from eating popcorn.”

Popcorn hangovers aside, the very busy Povitsky is killing it. She might prefer to go by Little Esther, but her recent presence across projects has been anything but. She took off as a scene-stealer on the beloved CW series Crazy Ex-Girlfriend before launching a Freeform show based on her short film Alone Together .

These days, she can be found in Hulu’s wonderfully surreal Dollface and co-hosting the podcast Trash Tuesday — and, in her free time, she’s consulting for the iCarly reboot on Paramount Plus.

Still, the actress, writer, and comedian isn’t letting her first love — standup — fall to the wayside amid these many projects. Ahead of a headlining show at New York City’s Gramercy Theatre on Sunday, November 14th as part of the New York Comedy Festival , Povitsky joined Consequence to discuss sharpening her new material, along with a peek into Season 2 of Dollface .

She explains that she sees her skillsets cross-pollinating right now, and that while her work on Dollface (scripted) is vastly different from honing a standup set, the two keep each other sharp in a way. “They’re two completely different jobs, but getting on stage and testing out material helps me keep my comedy beats and my timing in tune,” she says. “Then, just being on the show has given me new life experience to draw from.”

For anyone that has yet to jump into Dollface , now is the perfect time to catch up while filming for the second season is underway. Povitsky appears alongside Kat Dennings, a sterling Brenda Song, and Shay Mitchell, who portray a friend group in a time of reconciliation shot through a chaotic, absurdist lens. Executive produced by Margot Robbie, Dollface feels like a necessary exploration of female friendship, a tender but honest peek into the complicated highs and lows of existing in your twenties.

According to Povitsky, the friendships seen on screen on Dollface aren’t a big reach. “I feel like they cast us as a real-life friend group,” she says. “This season, in particular, we were just all so comfortable with each other.”

Please Pay Attention to Esther Povitsky (Please?)

Ahead of her first stand-up special, the comedian talks dog cams, anxiety, and quarantine hobbies.

esther povitsky

In Esther Povitsky’s new Comedy Central special, “Hot for My Name”—part family documentary, part stand-up set—there’s a scene that takes place at the public library in her native Skokie, Illinois.

“I want to show you these different books,” the comedian’s father says, leading her to a shelf of memoirs by Amy Schumer, Bob Saget, Judd Apatow, and other well-known comedians. “You can write a book,” he suggests, in a fatherly tone of encouragement. He reconsiders. “For you, it might be a comic book.”

It’s one of many subtly searing exchanges between Povitsky and her endearing yet perpetually unimpressed parents, Morrie and Mary, in segments that serve as interludes to the special’s more traditional stand-up bits. These home videos drop us directly into Povitsky’s coarse family dynamics, giving her onstage punchlines—about her midwestern roots, attention-seeking habits, and deep-seated longing for approval—even more bite.

When Adam Sandler signed on to produce the special, Povitsky had no plans to actually make one. Her friend and eventual director, Nick Goossen, called with the news. “He’s like, ‘So I just showed Adam Sandler your stand-up, and he wants to produce your special,” she says. “I was like, ‘What? I don’t have a special.’”

To shift gears and get her stand-up ready in time, Povitsky had to move fast, ultimately taping at L.A.’s insider comedy club Dynasty Typewriter. But the idea to share the spotlight with her parents was born much earlier, through an accidental act of espionage. A few years ago, Morrie and Mary agreed to look after her dog Pepper for a time, and, after enough pestering, let their daughter install a surveillance camera in their living room so she could check on him. “Then I realized, ‘Oh, I can just see my parents sitting on the couch any time of day,’” she says.

Povitsky shared some highlights during an appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers in 2018, including a snapshot of the couple on their anniversary, huddled under the covers on the living room couch, flossing their teeth. The footage bested anything she expected from a puppy cam. For the special, she had all the documentary segments shot on one hand-held camera, rejecting Comedy Central’s cushy production budget proposal lest it “kill the magic that is honest, real people being funny in their own lives.”

For Povitsky, who grew up on Seinfeld , comedy is in these quotidian details of human interaction. “I like the tone of reality,” she says, acknowledging the similarities in many of her characters, including her stand-up persona, because they’re all, in some way, a version of her. “I always say to my friends, ‘We’re the people who like funny TV shows a little too much, to the point where we needed to make our lives like them.’”

As a kid, Povitsky was often overlooked, or else the butt of the joke. “I like to say that I wasn't raised, I was watched,” she says with a laugh. “Like, I was kept safe, but nobody interacted with me. I was always fighting to get someone to play a quick game with me.” She idolized her glamorous older half-sister, who wanted nothing to do with her at the time, and felt like no less of an outsider during her three years at the University of Illinois, where the party culture seemed to appeal to everyone but her. “It’s one thing when you’re somewhere and it sucks,” Povitsky says. “But when you’re somewhere and it sucks, and everyone else loves it, it’s like, ‘Oh, I’m the problem.’”

In a sense, bottling that “lonely kid inside” gave her a lens through which to see the humor in uncomfortable realities, both others’ and her own. She lampoons her tweenish appearance almost as much as she does her childhood scars, switching effortlessly between deadpan self-deprecation and a peppier naiveté. At 5-foot-1, Little Esther, as she’s nicknamed online, accessorizes with butterfly hair clips and scrunchies, transforming onstage, as her close friend Chelsea Peretti puts it via text, “very convincingly into a dream kid-sister at a slumber party.”

esther povitsky

“Esther's comedy isn't just funny and smart, it's also personal in a uniquely self-aware way,” B.J. Novak, a friend and attendee of her special taping , says by email. “The way she presents herself, she both is the joke and is ‘in on the joke.’”

That ragging is part of her family’s language and the comedy world’s alike, Povitsky says. “That’s like a form of love for me. I sit there with a big smile on my face, and I’m like, ‘Make fun of me!’”

She met both Novak and Peretti at the Comedy Store, the famed West Hollywood stand-up venue that launched comics like Robin Williams and Dave Chappelle, and where she found her band of “weirdos and misfits”—including collaborators Whitney Cummings, Marc Maron, and Aflalo—after dropping out of college and moving to L.A. It was her younger self’s vision of freedom: no rules, no adults, and, seemingly, no concept of time. “I would show up at 8 p.m. and stay until 3 a.m. and babysit during the day,” Povitsky says.

Through the stand-up community, she also met her fiancé, comedy writer Dave King. Since lockdown, Povitsky's been posting videos of him mocking her limp grasp of sarcasm and inability to name any famous movies. “Before the pandemic, I tried to keep him a little bit anonymous,” she says, acknowledging that she loves to poke fun of him onstage but never by name. But after several months in their Silver Lake home, “everything’s blending together. Home life is professional life.”

In “Hot for My Name,” Povitsky recounts strong-arming King into proposing, but two years into their engagement, she confesses that weddings are not for her. “I’m honestly having second thoughts about getting married at all,” Povitsky says. “I think I’m gonna put him back at boyfriend level, lock it in there.”

When I reach Povitzky on Zoom, it’s mid-May and she’s wearing a freshly tie-dyed oversized T-shirt, her hair half up in a scrunchy. Tie-dyeing has become her near-daily ritual. It suits her personal style, which King has christened “celebrity at the airport.” It also may be the first hobby she’s had in 10 years. “Before this happened, I didn’t know how to handle any downtime,” she says. “I couldn’t not be working or thinking about work. I was in that mindset of, ‘I dropped out of college. I have to make it.’”

Even before the pandemic hit, Povitsky says, “I was basically going through a mental breakdown.” Last year was one of the most successful of the comedian’s life, and that was sort of the problem. Povitsky had wrapped Dollface ’s first season, shot her special, and finished a stand-up tour. “I was like, ‘I did all the things I wanted so badly to achieve, and I don’t feel better. It didn’t fix my problems. I’m still chasing something, and I don’t know what it is.” Had it not been for the coinciding global health crisis, “I may have come out of this mental dip,” she says. “But then I was also afraid.”

Povitsky went home to Skokie, started on Lexapro, and asked for help, widely. “I let everyone know, ‘I’m not doing well.’ Of course, you have the friends who are like, ‘Exercise and get sunshine, and you’ll be fine!’ and I’m like, ‘Fuck you.’ And then you have the friends who stay persistent on your ass.”

For her, that was Peretti. “Chelsea kept calling until I finally had to answer, and it forced me to talk to someone who was able to help me,” Povitsky says. Once she returned to L.A. and lockdown began, she and Peretti helped each other through isolation, meeting in their backyards, taking socially distant walks together, and sharing recipes in a group text with their mutual friend, comedian Kate Berlant.

esther povitsky

Povitsky got used to slowing down. Both filming for Dollface season 2 and a stand-up tour she had planned for the fall were delayed. So she finished writing a movie she calls a “grounded comedy-mystery,” about working at a Walgreens, and decided to continue her stream-of-consciousness koffee klatch podcast “Esther Club.”

“In theory,” she adds, “I should also be planning a wedding.”

But right now, why not just tie-dye? Watching friends grapple with the continued effects of COVID-19 while L.A. struggles to reopen, Povitsky finds herself on a now-familiar hamster wheel of fear and anxiety. The main thing getting her through is dyeing clothes (and masks, of course) in her backyard. In addition to its escapist appeal, the experiment offers her a way to feel helpful by donating proceeds to COVID relief efforts.

It can be difficult, as someone who does creative things for work, to not turn all creative things into work. “In my fantasy, I want to open a Shopify, where each product is limited-edition. It’s like a business a little kid would do. I ordered a bunch of mailers,” Povitsky says, seemingly in jest. A week later, though, she announced her soon-to-open tie-dye business on Instagram. And by the beginning of July, she officially launched Sleepover by Esther , whose new Instagram account touts candy-colored merch, “carelessly handcrafted in Los Angeles.” It sold out last week, to her surprise but maybe not to others’. If there were an official uniform of the COVID era, it may very well be, as the Sleepover by Esther website reads, “24-hour basement wear.”

Povitsky will no doubt don her pieces for the special’s premiere, a concept that’s vanished in the quarantine age. But being confined to her apartment hasn’t stopped her from putting comedy into the world—she posts casual, stream-of-consciousness monologues on social media daily, riffing on her pandemic practices, guest spots, and growing collection of pet projects. Her latest? A "Hot for My Name"-branded iced coffee, she announced on Instagram Tuesday , calling it "definitely illegal" with a giggle. “The coffee shop collab is why I have a standup special, and I think you all know that.”

“Hot for My Name” premieres Friday, July 17 at 10 p.m. ET on Comedy Central.

'My Relationship With The Art Form Changed Forever': Esther Povitsky On Comedy Central Stand-Up Special 'Hot For My Name'

August 10, 2020 / 3:33 PM EDT / CBS Boston

(CBS Local)-- Esther Povitsky is someone many across the country are familiar with, but the actor and comedian will become a household name after people check out her new Comedy Central stand-up special called "Esther Povitsky: Hot For My Name." This is the comedian's debut special and it was executive-produced by Adam Sandler's production company Happy Madison.

esther povitsky tour

The special is streaming for free right now and features Povitsky riffing about her parents, why she's blocked on Facebook by her ex-boyfriend's wife and why she likens herself to a piece of pizza during sexual encounters. There is a little something for everyone in this special and Povitsky is excited for people to check it out.

"I had so many names for my special, but that one felt self-deprecating with a little bit of confidence," said Povitsky in an interview with CBS Local's DJ Sixsmith. "It kind of embodies who I am. It was a different experience to actually put in serious effort into my stand-up because previously, I had been pretty lackadaisical with it. My relationship was more stroll on stage, how do you feel that day. Maybe you run by a couple of new bits or maybe you do some old ones. Having to have this end goal in mind of this filmed, expensive comedy special where a network is spending a lot to make this happen, there was a certain amount of pressure."

FULL INTERVIEW:

Povitsky says this comedy special changed her relationship with the art form forever. In addition to her stand-up work, the Illinois native has been on shows like Hulu's "Dollface," and "Alone Together," which she starred in and executive produced. Prior to filming her special, Povitsky did a major tour in order to work out all the material she built out for her act.

RELATED: 'It's A Relatable Story: Jordan Weiss On Creating Hulu's Dollface'

"The pressure is really what makes you work. The fear and the embarrassment," said Povitsky. "By the time you're taping it, it is what it is. In terms of going out there and having certain material not land, that doesn't really scare me. I think what scares me is feeling unprepared. Jokes don't work, that's par for the course. You have to be prepared that not everything you say will be funny or you'll get your heart broken too many times. When jokes bomb, that separates someone who is new from someone who is a pro. A pro can handle things not going well and keep going. That was definitely a skill that I learned early on."

While Povitsky has crossed paths with a lot of big names in the industry, one of the coolest parts of this stand-up experience was seeing Adam Sandler tweet out a video of Povitsky's special.

"Everyone accused me of it being photoshopped," said Povitsky. "Adam Sandler tweeted my special and Instagrammed it. It's so cool and he's such a good person. There's just those people in this business that we all love because we grew up watching them in film and TV and then we also hear over the years that they are such good people. It makes you feel so warm and fuzzy. He was working with a friend of mine, who was a director and who helped him produce his special. My friend really wanted to produce and direct my special and he showed Adam my set and Adam was like I want to produce this. I'd like to think we're kindred spirits."

Dollface’s Esther Povitsky Never Lets Failure Get in Her Way

The Dollface star and stand-up comedian on her frank approach to turning trauma into comedy, watching Euphoria , and not being afraid to fail.

esther povitsky tour

Esther Povitsky doesn’t shy away from discomfort. In her work, the actress and comedian has always leaned into the uneasy, awkward, or otherwise embarrassing anecdotes with a whimsical yet brutally honest perspective, disarming people while simultaneously leading them down a delightfully hilarious path. (Take her first hour-long comedy special titled Hot for My Name , released in 2020, for example, or her podcast “Trash Tuesday,” if you need examples.) Now, she stars as Izzy on Hulu’s Dollface, opposite Brenda Song , Kat Dennings, and Shay Mitchell.

Calling from North Carolina, where the performer is currently on tour, she opened up to W about her frank approach to turning trauma into comedy, watching Euphoria , and not being afraid to fail. Read more in her Culture Diet interview, here.

You got your start in stand-up comedy, but in recent years, you’ve gone from guest star to series regular on shows like Crazy Ex-Girlfriend , Alone Together , and now Dollface. Was acting on television always the goal?

When I first moved to L.A., I thought I would either be a movie star after a year or I would move home and work at the Walgreens I could walk to from my parents’ house. But I had to rationalize dropping out of college. I was so clueless about anything in life, and that was just how I felt. Now, I would say the goal is to keep working in comedy—it doesn’t matter what, as long as I’m doing things that I think are funny.

Dropping out of college to move to L.A. from Illinois to pursue a Hollywood career is a big step. Were you interested in performance as a child, or did that come later?

I was always a little confused and scared. My mom is originally from Minnesota and pursuing a creative career wasn’t very normal to her, so I think while I knew I wanted to, I also had her voice in my head of like, “You need to be more realistic,” and even my dad, too. I thought I was going to be a dancer for a long time because I loved dancing, but I always felt so lost and confused and lonely. I realized, I’m just gonna do the thing that I wanted because nothing else was working. My goal was always to try. I was like, I don’t care if I make it or if I fail. For so long, so many people told me I couldn’t—okay, fair. But at least let me try.

Now that you’re balancing stand-up with television, what are you enjoying most about your career?

I really want to do another stand-up special. I’m getting a lot of joy out of trying out the new material and refining it—picking subjects that I feel passionate talking about on stage. I’m looking at writing my stand-up now the way I’ve learned to look at writing for television, where the story and content come first and then we’ll make it funny later. My creative process has shifted, where, five or 10 years ago, I was like, What’s a funny joke? And now I’m like, What do I wanna say on stage that’s gonna get me feeling passionate and excited? I’m just having fun taking an edible at night and getting in that creative space.

I don’t know that taking an edible at night would make me more productive.

It can totally go either way. Don’t get me wrong—I sometimes have nothing to offer when I do it, or you know, you go on stage and you tell a joke and you bomb. The process is full of failure.

There’s always been an honesty and a frankness in your comedy about sex, relationships, etc. What are some of the themes and concepts you’re trying include in this newer phase of your comedy career?

Last year, I had a miscarriage and I have a whole chunk of stand-up now about it. The best decision I’ve made is talking openly about my miscarriage, but it’s not without challenges. I was recently told by someone in the business that that subject matter was not appropriate. It really threw me off—it is interesting to see that when you wanna do things like that, people are not always ready. But I’m not gonna stop. I’m so abundantly proud of myself for turning my trauma into comedy. That’s what I’m here to do. And I’m gonna keep doing it.

Your Dollface character, Izzy, started out as a wannabe friend of the show’s main trio, and now she’s fully inside their friend group. Season two picks up after the pandemic, and Izzy, like everyone in real life and on the show, has gone through a lot of changes; the biggest one is probably finally getting a boyfriend who genuinely seems to care about her. How have you been able to further develop the character for this season? Is there any bit of you in there?

Jordan Weiss, the creator of the show, was always so open to collaboration. She and I will text in between seasons and she’ll shoot me ideas and ask me for feedback. I relate to Izzy’s insecurities, her anxiety. I didn’t even know what anxiety was three years ago. I somehow just thought it was normal to be anxious all the time, but it’s been enlightening because I learned I had a really bad anxiety problem about two years ago, and I started taking medication for it and I’m so much better now. It’s been really cathartic to play this character whose anxiety is ruining her life, and then to see her realize that she’s more than her anxiety and she can have what she wants. That felt very true to my life experience.

Esther Povitsky on Hulu’s Dollface, Her New Standup Set, and Where She Finds Creative Inspiration

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

The post Esther Povitsky on Hulu’s Dollface , Her New Standup Set, and Where She Finds Creative Inspiration appeared first on Consequence .

She emphasizes, more than once, the joy of working in multiple female-heavy spaces. In addition to Dollface , she hosts Trash Tuesday with two other women, Annie Lederman and Khalyla Kuhn. Povitsky is big on manifesting, and she feels like this era of her life is something she’s wanted for a very long time.

It’s no secret that standup tends to be a very male-dominated space, and she’s thrilled to look around and see herself surrounded by other witty, talented women. “Standup was so many men, and so many older men, and that was my peer group for a few years… which just felt so weird and wrong,” she says. “This is playtime. It’s just so much more fun for me.”

While Povitsky is fairly tight-lipped about the details of her upcoming set as part of the New York Comedy Festival, a festival she’s performed in many times over the past decade, she does reveal that her current work breaks new ground for her. She says she found herself digging into things she wasn’t quite ready to discuss, but wanted to explore through comedy. “It might need a trigger warning,” she says, referring to her decision to unpack a traumatic experience from the past year of her life in this new set.

A self-described “inspiration addict,” Povitsky says she can feel creatively impacted by even the smallest things (“an outfit, a color, an oat milk latte”) but, most of all, loves soaking up other people’s creative energy. “I love being around a person that makes me not want to be more like them, but makes me want to be more like my true self.”

Tickets for the New York Comedy Festival can be found on Ticketmaster .

Theatres in Moscow

Cultural life of Moscow city is various and rich! Operas, ballets, symphonic concerts... Russian composers have created some of the most beautiful classical music. Russian classical music is very popular in Moscow. It is performed in many beautiful historical venues. Do not forget to include a visit to a concert hall in your itinerary when you are planning your stay in Moscow! And do it in advance.

There are almost no restrictions on dress code in Russian theatres. Visitors may wear jeans and sports shoes, they may have a backpack with them. Only shorts are not allowed.

A typical feature of Russian theatre – visitors are bringing a lot of flowers which they present to their favorite performers after the show.

Here are some practical advices where to go and how to buy tickets.

The Bolshoi Theatre

The Bolshoi Theatre is the oldest, the most famous and popular opera and ballet theatre in Russia. The word “Bolshoi” means “big” in Russian. You can buy a ticket online in advance, 2-3 months before the date of performance on the official website . Prices for famous ballets are high: 6-8 thousand rubles for a seat in stalls. Tickets to operas are cheaper: you can get a good seat for 4-5 thousand rubles. Tickets are cheaper for daytime performances and performances on the New Stage. The New Stage is situated in the light-green building to the left of the Bolshoi's main building. The quality of operas and ballets shown on the New Stage is excellent too. However, you should pay attention that many seats of the Bolshoi’s Old and New Stages have limited visibility . If you want to see the Bolshoi’s Old Stage but all tickets are sold out, you can order a tour of the theatre. You can book such a tour on the official website.

If you want, following Russian tradition, to give flowers to the performers at the end of the show, in the Bolshoi flowers should be presented via special staff who collects these flowers in advance.

In August the Bolshoi is closed.

The Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Music Theatre

This theatre is noteworthy. On one hand, it offers brilliant classical opera and ballet performances. On the other hand, it is an experimental venue for modern artists. You can check the program and buy tickets online here http://stanmus.com/ . If you are opera lover, get a ticket to see superstar Hibla Gerzmava . The theatre has a very beautiful historic building and a stage with a good view from every seat. Tickets are twice cheaper than in the Bolshoi.

The Novaya Opera

“Novaya” means “New” in Russian. This opera house was founded in 1991 by a famous conductor Eugene Kolobov. Its repertoire has several directions: Russian and Western classics, original shows and divertissements, and operas of the 20th and 21st centuries. It is very popular with Muscovites for excellent quality of performances, a comfortable hall, a beautiful Art Nouveau building and a historic park Hermitage, which is situated right next to it. You can buy tickets online here http://www.novayaopera.ru/en .

Galina Vishnevskaya Opera Center

The Opera Center has become one of the best theatrical venues in Moscow. It was founded in 2002 by great diva Galina Vishnevskaya. Nowadays its artistic director is Olga Rostropovich, daughter of Galina Vishnevskaya and her husband Mstislav Rostropovich, great cellist and conductor. Not only best young opera singers perform here, but also world music stars do; chamber and symphonic concerts, theatrical productions and musical festivals take place here. You can see what is on the program here http://opera-centre.ru/theatre . Unfortunately “booking tickets online” is available in Russian only. If you need help, you can contact us at and we can book a ticket for you.

Tchaikovsky Concert Hall and The Great Hall of Moscow Conservatory

These are two major concert halls for symphonic music in Moscow. Both feature excellent acoustics, impressive interior, various repertoire and best performers. You can check the program here http://meloman.ru/calendar/ . You need just to switch to English. Booking tickets online is available only for owners of Russian, Ukrainian and Belorussian phone numbers. If you need help, you can contact us and we can book a ticket for you.

Moscow International Performing Arts Center (MIPAC)

This modern and elegant concert hall houses performances of national and foreign symphony orchestras, chamber ensembles, solo instrumentalists, opera singers, ballet dancers, theatre companies, jazz bands, variety and traditional ensembles. Actually, it has three concert halls placed on three different levels and having separate entrances. Your 48-hour tour guide of Moscow this winter!

esther povitsky tour

9 am – Visit the Red Square

Christmas market on Red Square

Christmas market on Red Square

The first thing that every tourist should do by default is visit the very heart of Moscow – it’s main and most beautiful (which ‘krasnaya’ actually meant in Old Russian) square!

There are several ways to explore it:

  • Take a selfie with Spasskaya Tower
  • Have a warm drink at the Christmas market (which lasts until mid-January)
  • Visit Lenin’s Mausoleum
  • Shop in the gorgeous adjacent GUM department store
  • Visit St. Basil’s Cathedral (and learn that it’s actually several churches under one roof).

11 am – It’s Kremlin time!

Inside the Moscow Kremlin

Inside the Moscow Kremlin

Entering the Kremlin is, actually, a bit of a quest, as it’s a presidential facility with no general access. You need to buy a ticket or, better still, book a guided tour. Inside the Kremlin’s walls, you will find ancient cathedrals, in which Russian tsars used to be crowned and buried, as well as explore the magnificent architecture of the Kremlin that reflects the rich history of the country. And, finally, you could also make a quick visit to the Moscow Kremlin Museums and admire artifacts from various Russian tsarist eras: carriages, thrones, crowns and the most incredible armory and jewelry.

For more information, visit the official website of the Kremlin . It’s open from 10 am to 5 pm (and it’s closed on Thursdays) in winter.

2 pm – Watch the changing of the Guard

The honor guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier

The honor guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier

A very spectacular (and free) thing to do is watch how the honor guard does their ceremonial change at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and the Eternal Flame, situated in Alexander Garden, right next to the Kremlin wall. Every hour, from 8 am to 8 pm, the 1st Company of the Kremlin (Presidential) Regiment performs this rather old and beautiful tradition. But, be warned, it's often overcrowded.

3 pm – Enjoy a green oasis just in the center

Florarium in Zaryadye

Florarium in Zaryadye

Just a few steps from the Red Square, you will find the fabulous Zaryadye park. Opened in 2017, it is designed by renowned American architect bureau ‘Diller Scofidio + Renfro’. You can walk among the very cozy botanical decorations and explore Russia’s climate zones, as each of them is represented in dedicated areas, complete with flora from those zones.

The floating bridge in Zaryadye Park

The floating bridge in Zaryadye Park

The park also has an underground museum, an “ice cave” and a 3D cinema, where you can take part in a virtual adventure – a flight over Moscow! However, the piece de resistance is a floating boomerang bridge over the Moskva River, one of the best places to take a selfie.

You can also grab a quick lunch or relax with a cup of coffee or tea in the park.

7 pm – Arrange a ballet night

The Bolshoi Theater

The Bolshoi Theater

Of course, the most fancy way to finish your day in Moscow would be to go to the ballet at the Bolshoi Theater (in a perfect world, to see ‘The Nutcracker’!). However, getting tickets to the Bolshoi is not an easy task and should be done well in advance of your visit.

But, don’t be upset if you don’t manage to get tickets to the Bolshoi. Moscow has dozens of other options to see a ballet (or opera). No less brilliant performances can be seen in the Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Music Theater or in The State Kremlin Palace (by the way, this is another way to get a quick glimpse inside the Kremlin!).

10:30 pm – Have a late dinner in a fancy restaurant

Dr Zhivago restaurant

Dr Zhivago restaurant

There are not so many other cities with such a big choice of restaurants in a range of tastes and styles. In 2021, the authoritative Michelin guide announced their pick of the best of Moscow’s restaurants. And here’s our guide to all the places with Russian cuisine for any budget. But, if you happen to be in the area of the Bolshoi or Nemirovich-Danchenko Theater, then ‘Dr. Zhivago’ would definitely be a nice option (and it’s open around the clock).

DAY 2

9 am – grab a moscow coffee.

Winter festivities mood in Moscow

Winter festivities mood in Moscow

Moscow is definitely a coffee city! You can find coffee shops on every corner and they all offer a huge range of drinks. Try a ‘raf’ coffee, a sweet, creamy drink that was created in Russia, or dare to pick one of the very unusual offers, like cheese coffee or a Soviet candy style one (check out our coffee guide here ).

10 am – Take a river cruise

Winter boating along the Moskva River

Winter boating along the Moskva River

Another exciting way to explore Moscow is to observe it from the water. Boats cruise along the Moskva River all year round. Most begin their route from the Hotel Ukraine, one of Stalin's ‘Seven Sister’ skyscrapers, and will bring you back to the same spot after passing the medieval Novodevichy Convent, Moscow State University and Luzhniki Stadium, the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour and giant monument to Peter the Great and many other sightseeings.

It’s always at optimum temperature inside the boat, which also has huge panoramic windows. Select boats also offer a full dining experience, so it is also a nice place to have breakfast or lunch.

If you are not a water person, then discover other, unusual sides of Moscow – pick one of the activities we’ve prepared for you here !

1 pm – Visit ‘Russia’ Expo and taste a bunch of Russian regional cuisines

Russia Expo at VDNKh

Russia Expo at VDNKh

Until April 2024, the Soviet-era VDNKh exhibition park is hosting the huge ‘Russia’ expo, with tons of activities and expositions devoted to Russia, its culture, science and nature. Check out our special guide on what to do there!

An entire ‘House of Russian Cuisine’ has been opened at the expo. You will find 15 food stands with flagship dishes from Kamchatka, Siberia, Karelia and other regions of Russia. Imagine trying a range of cuisines and dishes in one place without even having to travel anywhere, be it Altai pelmeni, Tula kalach or Caucasian pies! A perfect place to grab some lunch.

The VDNKh exhibition park is a great place to visit, in general! Its pavilions are the perfect example of Stalinit Empire style architecture and you can almost feel as if you’ve traveled back in time! You will also find several interesting museums in the park – devoted to space exploration, Russian history and even a ‘Special Purpose Garage’, which showcases the various vehicles used by the country’s leaders.

'Sun of Moscow' wheel

'Sun of Moscow' wheel

And, finally, you can ride Europe's tallest panoramic wheel – ‘Sun of Moscow’ – that will give you panoramic views of the city – from a height of 140 meters!

5 pm – Ice skate with view & mulled wine

Ice skating rink on Red Square (GUM department store on the background)

Ice skating rink on Red Square (GUM department store on the background)

Ice skating is one of the most popular and affordable activities in Moscow. There are several great ice skating rinks in picturesque locations that are open all winter long. One of the biggest rinks in Europe is also at the aforementioned VDNKh or you can visit the one in Gorky Park, another very popular Moscow spot, or the small, but fancy rink – right on Red Square!

All the parks offer ice skate rental, so the only things you need are warm clothes, a charged phone to record your memories and a good mood!  Moscow also gets dark at 4:30 pm in winter and hundreds of lights are switched on, turning the city into a giant fairy tale!

A mulled wine with a view

A mulled wine with a view

And, if you are not a sports person, we’ve picked several other unusual activities that you could do in Moscow instead. For example, did you know that there is an entire district of dacha (countryside) houses, just 10 minutes from the center, surrounded by giant new highrises? How about taking a stroll there and feeling the early Soviet atmosphere?

8 pm – Warm up & laugh out loud

After all these outdoor activities, what could be better than a warm cozy bar with a hot drink and nice company? Moscow is a city full of entertainment for all tastes. So, if you know the Russian language or want to practice it, go to a theater or catch a stand-up comedy show. Moscow even has comedy shows in English, where you can hear both Russians speaking fluent English or foreigners (including Brits and Americans) who live in Russia speaking in broken or heavily-accented Russian (Check their show dates on the ‘ Moscow English Comedy ’ Telegram channel)!

11 pm – Finish by partying the night away!

Propaganda club in Moscow

Propaganda club in Moscow

Moscow never sleeps, as you might have heard. Which means there are plenty of bars and nightclubs where you can have a drink (or two or three; be sure to check out how Russians make Black Russian and White Russian cocktails) and chat with incredibly different people. Have fun and don’t miss your flight (or miss it and stay longer in the best city in the world!)!

That's it! See you soon in Moscow
