Welcome to Japan! Transfer by coach (SHUTTLE BUS) to hotel. 18H30.- Meeting with guide. Late in the afternoon, we will pay a visit to this fascinating country by taking a trip on the metro (tickets included) to the Shinjuku district and see the crowds of people who use this modern and efficient collective transport system. Shinjuku is one of the most important nightlife districts. Dinner included and return to hotel by metro with our guide.

Tokyo

In the morning, we take part in a 5-hour trip with our guide to see this amazing city, with its hustle and bustle and extremely modern districts that coexist with quiet, peaceful areas. Brief stop at the Zojoji Temple to make a beautiful photograph of the Tokyo Tower. Pay attention to the hundred of Jizos, stone traditional protecting deities who guide us on our travels, give power to those who are weak (such children) and those in dangerous places, and who are dressed including hats, robes and windmills. Then we head to the junction of Shibuya, a junction that is said to be the most crowded in the world. The Meiji Temple is dedicated to the Emperor Meiji, his wife, and their spirits. We continue on our bus along the elegant street of Omotesando. We will edge the most beautiful part of the Imperial Palace and the gardens. Stop to visit the famous Nijubashi Bridge. We will pass through the district of Akihabara, the “electric town” with icons from the popular Japanese Manga and Anime culture and then see Kokugikan, the Sumo stadium, home of this Japanese sport. We will also visit the Buddhist temple of Sensoji, the oldest and most important temple in Tokyo, with its 55-metre high pagoda. Then we will have some free time to visit the traditional commercial street of Nakamise in the district of Asakusa. Lunch included in a local restaurant. Return to hotel.Free time in the afternoon. NOTE: During the Japanese Olympics, accommodation may be given near Narita airport.

Tokyo

We will leave Tokyo for KAMAKURA. This “oasis of peace” for two centuries was the capital of Japan, and treasures numerous sanctuaries, temples and gardens. In the Zen temple of Hokoku-ji we will stroll through its bamboo forest (admission included) and we can have a green tea. We also see Sugimoto-dera, the oldest temple in the city, founded in 734. Time in the pleasant city centre before seeing the Great Buddha (Daibutsu - admission included). Our route is subsequently one of scenic beauty following the Pacific Ocean. Free time for lunch and a stroll in ENOSHIMA, a small island in the ocean connected by a bridge. We continue to ODAWARA; here we include admission to the castle, an imposing medieval fortress (restored in the twentieth century) from the Edo era, one of Japan´s main castles. Accommodation.

Tokyo

Today´s stage is spectacular traveling to the beautiful area of Hakone, a region of lakes and mountains near Mount Fuji. We start the day going up OWAKUDANI, the “hell valley”, steam boiler, bubbling mud and sulphurous gases (Note: Access is sometimes closed due to high volcanic activity or toxic gases, in which case we would include the arakurayama sengen park). After that we go on to OSHINO HAKKAI, a small, picturesque village with 8 ponds and views of Mount Fuji. We continue to KAWAGUCHIKO, an idyllic city of small houses, flowers and mountains next to its beautiful lake, where we include a beautiful boat trip. Later we start to climb Mount Fuji where, on the road that takes us to the “fifth station” amidst spectacular forests and views, we reach a height of 2305 metres. Note: In winter, the climb to Mount Fuji is often closed by snow or other weather conditions; if this is so, we will go as far as we are authorised.Return to Kawaguchiko, with time to stroll near the lake. We will stay at a Ryokan (a traditional Japanese hotel), and have the chance to enjoy its ONSEN (public baths). Dinner included.Note: In the planned Ryokan, some rooms are in Japanese style, with accommodation on tatamis, and others are in western-style. Accommodation may sometimes be in a western type hotel.

Kawagushiko:Amazing views from Kachikachi mountain

We are only 130km (81 miles) from KYOTO. In the morning, we continue along the pretty road bordered by lakes to IYASHI NO SATO NENBA, a tiny village destroyed by a typhoon in 1966 and later restored as a traditional open-air mountain village and museum. Its traditional houses have been transformed into arts and crafts shops, restaurants and traditional museums. We then have the opportunity to admire the SHIRAITO FALLS, considered done of the most attractive sites in Japan, with a waterfall height of 150 metres. We will then continue to NAGOYA, the third most important city of Japan, on the shores of the Pacific. Here we will visit the TOYOTA MUSEUM (admission included), a must-see for motor lovers. We continue to KYOTO, accomodation.

Kioto

We spend all day in the city that was the capital of Japan from the year 794 to 1868 and home to the Imperial Court. During World War II the city was the only major Japanese to escape the bombardments, and so it still preserves its wealth of artistic heritage; the famous protocol restricting greenhouse gas emissions was signed in Kyoto in 1997. We head for the outskirts of Kyoto to Arashiyama, where we cross the Togetsukyo Bridge ("bridge over the moon"), which has fantastic views. We will visit the Tenryuji temple, one of the "five major Zen temples of Kyoto" and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, followed by a walk through its mystic bamboo forest. The visit includes a trip to one of the most important parts of the city. We will see the marvellous Shinto Shrine of Fushimi Inari, the Imperial Palace and Kinkakuji temple, “the golden pavilion” and its wonderful gardens. Free time before visiting GION, a busy traditional quarter famous for its Geisha. Free time.

Kyoto

We leave for NARA and visit Todaiji, a magnificent Buddhist temple built in 752, which has a giant Buddha and where passengers can take photos and touch and feed the deer that wander through the park. Lunch included. After the visit, we will see HORYUJI Buddhist temple, a World Heritage Site that includes a seminary, monasteries and temples. Its main pagoda temple is one of the oldest wooden buildings in the world and is the oldest Buddhist temple in Japan and an important place of worship. We continue to OSAKA, where we arrive in the evening. Accommodation in this modern city (Japan’s second city). We will visit Dotonbori, a colourful district filled with nightlife.

In Nara we are visiting Todaiji, a magnificent Buddhist temple built in 752

We leave for HIMEJI, where we will include entry to its immense complex that shows us the architecture of Japanese castles. Lunch included in a local restaurant. We go on to OKAYAMA, where we will visit Korakuen, one of the most beautiful gardens in Japan, with its lakes, waterfalls and traditional teahouses. Next, we head towards the Shinto shrine of Kibitsu-Jinja where the God Kibitsuhiko-no-Mikoto is venerated, which is the origin of the legend of Momotaro, symbol of Okayama Prefecture. We find a unique architecture with a corridor of 360 meters long. After the visit, free time in the city, active provincial capital of just over 700,000 inhabitants.Note: On some dates, we may be accommodated in FUKUYAMA or KURASHIKI. When this happens, the visit to Kibitsu-Jinja Temple will be cancelled. The visit to Kurashiki can be made on the same day in the afternoon.

Osaka

We leave for KURASHIKI, a city with a very well preserved historical centre. Time for a stroll in this charming place with its atmosphere from the past. We continue on our way to HIROSHIMA, a city sadly known for the atomic bomb that fell on it in 1945 and which levelled the city. We will stroll around the Peace Memorial, the Dome of the bomb and we will visit the impressive Museum of Peace. After the war we will seek peace by embarking on a ferry to the island “where men and gods live together”, with the sanctuary of ITSUKUSHIMA dedicated to the guardian of the seas, built partially over the sea. Time to visit the temple, to stroll around its pretty centre and have lunch. Return to our hotel in Hiroshima. Dinner included.Note: The order of the visits in Hiroshima may vary without affecting their content.

Okayama

After breakfast, transfer to the station to take the BULLET TRAIN to TOKYO. It takes four hours to travel the 800 kilometers between both cities. Arrival in Tokyo at around 2:00 pm. END OF THE TRIP.Check your flight time in case you need an additional night. Transfer to the airport for departure not included. Our guide will advise you on the best public transport to get there. Note: If you have booked additional nights in TOKYO at the end of the trip, the transfer from the station to the hotel is NOT included.

Reviews of this operator, i have taken a trip....

I have taken a trip with them through Spain and Portugal and everything was very organized. Professional guides and wonderful places. Without a doubt, I will return.

My husband and I booked...

My husband and I booked Europamundo's Croatia, Bosnia and Slovenia tour in October 2023. It was an amazing experience. This is our second trip with them. Starting from the hotels to places that they took us in 08 days and the guides were excellent. All hotels were 4 star with quality breakfast and dinners were all in the hotel which was a great plus. Our guide Igor was patient and kind. the thing I loved the most is you meet people from so many different countries and you end up making friends for lifetime. Our group had 45 people from all over the world but our guide was kind enough and he did a great job by switching in Spanish and English. I will recommend it to all not only because its affordable but also you get quality and its worth every penny.

Highly satisfied with the management...

Highly satisfied with the management and employees of Europomondo. Me, with my wife and one grown-up daughter took "Discover Italy" tour from Europomondo. The itinerary was thoughtfully planned and executed accordingly so that tourists can get a perfect picture of whole of Italy during the specified time. Though it was hectic and we had to walk a lot.....but we were informed about this fact beforehand. Our coach was very comfortable and its driver Mr Marco is an amazing person. He is gentle in nature as well as in driving. Our regular guide Ms Paula is ever smiling and helpful in nature with a vast knowledge of the subject she is speaking about and has a sense of responsibility. All the hotels were comfortable though we had very little time to enjoy our hotel stay. Our first hotel , G P Hotel in Roam, is the best among the lot. Also appreciate the pickup and drop service , which are very punctual . Over all time management was praiseworthy. Though small hitch was there with one or two hotels, considering the vastness of the tour and overall arrangements those small hitches can be ignored. Looking forward for a next tour with Europomondo

Just finished a 3 week...

Just finished a 3 week tour not do long ago. Most of it was great, I couldn't ask for a better experience. Except for 1 tour guide (Maria). First of she and the driver was over an hour late to our hotel to pick every one up, which is fair enough, unexpected things happen. Then I thought that everyone was punished due to them being late. We were rushed everywhere we went. She made us pay for a toilet only to walk us down to the city centre to only allow us 45 minutes to find a restaurant to have so called lunch at around 3:00pm. Then we drove for at least 6 hours with very little breaks, not even to allow everyone to have toilet breaks. I would recommend eurpomando but not Maria as a tour guide. Every other tour guide we had were fantastic.

We had an incredible time...

We had an incredible time visiting Switzerland and Paris, and there was no need to worry about anything. The organization was perfect, and the hotels were booked and all this was at a resonable cost. But an issue arose with an extremely rude and unpleasant driver(Andres) for one of the days, who abruptly slammed the brakes on a high-speed bus because he was angry at kids talking. This could have been very dangerous for the passengers also. Would have given 5 stars if it wasbt for the driver

The absolute worst. They do...

The absolute worst. They do not follow the itinerary provided. When we arrived in Versailles, tickets are sold out since instead of morning, they changed it to 3-4pm where all the tickets are sold out. Whole day wasted. Most of the museums/sights they state in their itinerary, they will just bring you there, entrance fee is not included. They will only bring you to free places, so just be aware that you will not be getting your money’s worth. Bus is ALWAYS late, today our meetup time is 7:45am, the bus arrived 8:25am, since they had to pick up other guest from a totally different hotel. They frequently change buses, it is a hit or miss. There are times where the airconditioner is good, leg space is acceptable. There are also times, they would rent a bus from a different company, where it is very cramped. Guide: they know the basics but not the nitty gritty details. For example they would just point you “Oh this is blah building, without any further explanation.” Hotels are mostly 4 star hotels with really shitty customer service. Once I had a room (cant remember the hotel in Lyon, France) assigned to me where the room has not been cleaned up. GROSS. One of the other hotel (Dormero Hotel, Zurich), did not have a reception staff at night, so when we were a defective bath tub, we had no one to complain to.

If you like to be...

If you like to be stressed, rushed and be placed in nasty hotels without air conditioning and rude staff then this is the tour company for you. I just came back from a 10 day trip with them. You spend a ridiculously amount of time in the bus, they are disorganized and don’t give you enough time in the cities. They expect you to see an entire city, eat and use the restroom in 1 hour. The bus WILL leave you in you are not back on time. Also, it is NOT IDEAL FOR SENIORS OR PEOPLE WITH ANY TYPE OF DISABILITIES. Two drivers got pissed when they saw we had a walker and one of them kept saying how the company does not allow drivers to get enough rest which can cause accidents. They have the WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE. They leave you far from the hotel entrance in the middle of the street at night with all of your luggage. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS COMPANY.

To Whom It May Concern of Europamundo…

To Whom It May Concern of Europamundo Vacaciones and Petrabax, Reference: Madrid and Andalusia Tour, April 20-25, 2024 This is to inform you, Europamundo Vacaciones and Petrabax, of major concerns and observed difficulties which plagued your tour company’s operations from 20 to 25 April, 2024. These concerns were observed and witnessed by several members of the tour group during this time period, and it appears that these concerns are habits ingrained in your mode of operations and staff. The three major concerns are in the areas of; 1) Miscommunication 2) Lack of Management and No Accountability 3) Toxic and Caustic Employees in the Field First, in regards to the miscommunication, the posted tour information sheets in hotel lobbies need to be in other languages, aside from only English and Spanish. I observed that our tour group consisted of diverse cultures and several languages, to include Pakistani, Arabic, Chinese, Brazilian and Indian members. There were only seven English speaking members (Americans) of this entire tour group, which had no difficulty in understanding the English tour information sheets and tour guide instructions. The other limited-English groups had extreme difficulty in understanding the basic instructions from the tour guides. This caused tour members to miss meeting points and times, which were crucial for the overall tour timeline. To remedy this miscommunication, I recommend the that guides verify that members of the tour group understand basic English or Spanish directions and all the explanations, if not, your corporate office needs to remind customers of this crucial need. In addition to this miscommunication, the tour guide, Alba, scolded the entire “English group” several times of our not being “punctual” for departure times and meeting. I observed and witnessed all the English speaking tour members being on time, and that the non-English or limited-English members were late or confused on directions constantly. The tour guides also assume that all English-speaking tour group members understand their directions, which was incorrect and only added to the confusion and chaos.Second, there is a lack of management and lack of accountability, in regards to how the tour group functions daily. For example, when the entire tour group was separated and directed to their hotels, some hotel room reservations did not exist or were not available. This caused more confusion and displeasure between the tour group and the tour guides. To remedy this mismanagement, Europamundo could email the tour group members of the hotel name and verification of hotel rooms, prior to the start of the entire tour. This task should not be placed on the tour guides, who were overwhelmed and unable to deal with tour group members who were displeased and angry that no hotel rooms were reserved. There were several times when the tour guide, Alba Romero Amores, was overwhelmed with angry tour group members for the lack of hotel bookings and unavailable tour site tickets to locations. Alba conducted herself in a professional and courteous manner during these difficult moments, but was still overwhelmed with circumstances beyond her control. There is no person or office to contact for accountability, in regards to tour group members expressing concerns during the tour. Part 1 of 2.

Japan's Landscapes and Mount Fuji

I did a 15-day tour in Japan in June 2023 and it was a wonderful experience. Guides were helpful and knowledgeable: Pablo, David (2), Eduardo and Erika. I was explained all the tour details by my travel agent and Europamundo complied with the tour, timings, hotels, transfers... Great organization! Some of the passengers were a bit lost as they bought online and did not really read the tour info but the group did a great job and we supported each other by keeping a great and open attitude towards the trip. I will repeat again as soon as possible with some other European destination. THANK YOU Europamundo!

My family and i were amazed by the amount of care in every detail, we sure walked a lot but it was worth it, the guide was very humane and kindhearted, she let us take pictures, videos, even agree to take pictures with us, definitely an experience to repeat

Can you explain why your guides are scamming money out of customers? They give all the spill about the castles like anwick castle and Beatles exhibition say it’s £20.50 and get a certain amount and get a cheaper ticket a concession and they pocket the rest of the money which is totally wrong. The more they can get to go in the more they pocket and they always ask for cash .

Great Tour, Great Guides

I booked the Turkish Tour. My guides were Leader and Erman. These guides are incredibly friendly and generous individuals. They really went above and beyond what I would consider necessary from a tour guide, to ensure we all had a great tour. Both guides were incredibly well researched in their country and were able to answer all questions anyone had about the history of this beautiful country. The tour itself was great fun and covers a a lot of different parts of the country which really allowed us to gain the diverse range of experiences that Turkey can offer. The tour inspired me to return to the country again, and of course I would use this tour company again.

It started with us not picking us up at airport

It started with us not picking us up at the air port. The tour was korea + japan for 15 days. In korea they splitted us in 2 groups. The english group got put in a van/mini bus. The guide wasn't really speaking much english. Was a complete botched job. Alot of rushing, no explanations at all. The meals were hit and miss. sometimes good kbbq, the other time the worst pizza and pasta i ever had. Then when we got in Japan, a really good guide was speaking spanish/english was much better. I learned alot with this one. Then we got another guide. First timer guide, group of 40. Was a complete s show. She made me pay a ticket that was included, she couldn't really speak english much. so I had to keep asking what she just said in spanish. Anyways I cut my tour and didn't do the last day. Just stay away from this company.

DO NOT BOOK WITH EUROPAMUNDO

I booked a 15-day Korea/Japan tour with Europamundo through TourRadar. I have written a critical review on Europamundo about my experience on several platforms and will continue to do so in an effort to WARN future travelers NOT to book with EUROPAMUNDO. My posted review in TourRadar, has been met with a response that is accusatory and diminishing. And their response to my review at Google was more of a copy-pasted-answer asking me to detail my trip and take my concerns to their email. They assured me PUBLICLY that they will “take measures they deem appropriate,” I still have NOT heard from them weeks after I have written to them. This only further confirms that they DO NOT CARE ABOUT THEIR CLIENTS and will lie to you consistently. Your complaints will only fall on deaf ears. BEWARE AND STAY AWAY FROM EUROPAMUNDO!! REVIEW FOR TRIP: If you care about an immersive travel experience do NOT book your tour with Europamundo. Their itineraries consist of a long check off list to visit many points of interest. Groups are large, sometimes exceeding more than 40 clients/ 1 guide. The majority of the time will be spent commuting in a crowded bus. Upon arriving at a destination, a short guided tour took place, sometimes followed by 30 mins to 1 hour of free time before being constantly reminded to get back in time to the bus on the way to the next destination. The food included in the tour was run-of-the-mill, often having to make long queues before being able to eat. Outside of the formal tours, there was not enough guidance as to where we can eat and what to order in our free time. Most of us do not speak Korean/Japanese and have no idea what food to order or how to order as most of the menus do not have an English translation. One of the tour guides even recommended Burger King, pizza, and pasta for a night's dinner in town! The guide did not even mention any places that would help us better immerse ourselves in the cultural cuisine. We did not pay thousands of dollars to go across the ocean to have another pizza or burger. Before the trip, the initial Q&A with the representatives was also very poorly addressed. Entering Japan required filling out several digital forms. Some of the information requested in the form can only be answered by Europamundo. I have contacted them at least FIVE times for some guidance in filling out the form only to be DELIBERATELY ignored each time stating that filling out the forms is not their responsibility. During the trip, so many of our fellow travelers haven’t even completed the forms as they have the same issues and questions we had. This is NOT excusable behavior for a tour company! If your idea of a tour is to check off as many places on a list and have subpar customer service, Europamundo may work fine for you. For the rest, I would recommend looking elsewhere.

Trip within a Trip: Osaka and Kyoto, Japan

Make your next trip to Japan even better by adding on four days in exciting Osaka (pictured) and Kyoto © EarnestTse / Shutterstock

Senior Director of Content Laura Motta recently spent 10 days in Japan . To make the most of her time in the country, she included a four-day mini-excursion to Osaka and Kyoto – a trip within a trip, if you will, which anyone can replicate.

Everyone goes to Tokyo , and I would never tell you to skip it. But another critical part of any Japan itinerary is that magical Shinkansen (bullet train) ride south to Osaka , and the astounding sites that await beyond. A mind-boggling pair of cities – Osaka and Kyoto – are crammed with more shrines and temples, steel-and-glass skyscraper malls, scenic vistas and world-class restaurants than you can experience in a month, never mind in just a few days. This was my third trip to Japan and my second time visiting Osaka and Kyoto.

Before I get to my recommendations, here are a few practical tips:

  • When to arrive: Arriving in Osaka around midday lets you drop your bags at the hotel, rest and then hit Dōtonbori in the evening, when its famous neon lights are ablaze.
  • Getting there from the airport: The spotless, inexpensive airport limousine bus from Kansai Airport makes eight stops in Osaka, which include all of its main train stations.
  • Getting around: Japan is world-famous for the ease and comprehensiveness of its public transit for a reason. You can – and certainly should – do this route without a car. High-speed (more expensive/faster) and local (less expensive/slower) trains cover every inch of this region and will shuttle you quickly between Kyoto and Osaka. Both cities have easy-to-use subway systems.
  • What to pack: Certainly, your walking shoes and room in your stomach for a lot of ramen. Keep in mind that Japan has four distinct seasons and temperatures vary significantly between them. Check the weather ahead of time – and pack accordingly.
  • How to structure your days: It’s tempting to cram your schedule when there are so many things to see. Yet realistically, you won’t be able to do more than two major sites – maybe three, if you’re really going for it – in a single day. This is especially true in Kyoto, where the best sites are far apart and can require up to an hour of travel to reach.
  • Take it easy:  Don’t forget to eat, hydrate, rest and wander. And tell yourself you’ll be back.

The Glico Man illuminated billboard in Dōtonbori district, Osaka, Japan

Day 1: Osaka

Snack time .

You’ve been traveling all morning. It’s time to eat. (Unless, of course, you stuffed yourself en route on the amazing bento boxes you can get at Tokyo Station.) Keep it simple like I did and grab onigiri (rice balls) or a  sando  at 7-Eleven. There’s one on every corner, you’ll only spend a few dollars, and buying local snacks – especially in Japan – is among travel’s greatest joys.

See the neon

If you’re in Osaka, go see the Glico man. It's a rule. Or maybe it's just mine. This famous animated sign of a runner, arms raised, about to cross the finish line in some hypothetical marathon in the sky, remains delightful despite the tourist crush on the streets below. This ad for the Glico candy company (candy bars give you energy – get it?) has become an informal mascot of Dotonbori , Osaka’s dining and nightlife district. After dark, it’s fun to wander here through the area’s many arcades, claw-machine and pachinko parlors, and shops. If you start here on a weeknight, it’s delightfully quiet.

Insider tip: Arrive before sunset and duck into a tiny side street to Hōzen-ji , a small temple known for its moss-covered statues. I was there when they were lighting the lanterns for the evening – a dreamy experience indeed.

Have a cheap and cheerful dinner

Dotonbori is teeming with restaurants. You can’t miss the distinctive signage advertising takoyaki (grilled octopus balls), gyoza and crab. My favorite takoyaki stand, Takoyaki Yoriyabunzaemon , is humble compared to its bombastic neighbors; there is no 5ft marquee. Inside, you’ll sit on a well-worn barstool while the single cook pours takoyaki batter into the famous round molds and serves it to you still piping hot, and slathered in mayo, barbecue sauce and bonito flakes. A warning: if you value the skin on the roof of your mouth, do not eat too fast here.

Day 2: Kyoto

Bullet train .

The Shinkansen train between Osaka and Kyoto is cheap and lightning fast. This trip is included in many Japanese rail passes , but if you’re paying for a standalone ticket, you’ll pay 1420 yen (about US$10). The trip takes 15 minutes, so slower local trains hardly seem worth the mildly cheaper price. Arrive midday and head to your hotel to check in and drop your luggage. Before you depart, don’t forget to look around Kyoto Station for the eki  ink stamp, which you can imprint into a notebook as a souvenir. Every train station in Japan has a uniquely designed stamp, even if you sometimes have to ask the attendant at smaller stations where to find it.

Stay in style

If there’s one place to splurge on a fabulous hotel in Japan, it’s in Kyoto. Whether you’re strolling under vibrant fall leaves or spring cherry blossoms, or wandering the narrow alleys and stepped streets of the Gion district , Kyoto is romantic, its temples and shrines otherworldly. My choice was Hotel the Mitsui Kyoto , a new luxury property that blends smart contemporary design with traditional Japanese accents. Beside its excellent restaurant – more on that below – the highlight is the hotel's updated approach to the traditional onsen . This vast, moodily lit indoor space offers heated pools and loungers amid beautiful rock formations and water features. And unlike many onsen experiences, this one is a bathing-suits-required, mixed-gender space where everyone can hang out. There is also no surcharge for entry.

Visit the temples

My boyfriend cheekily refers to Fushimi Inari Taisha , Kyoto’s famous shrine with its rows and rows of vermillion gates ascending a dramatic hillside, as “the Instagram shrine.” It’s hard to say that he’s wrong: the site is a favorite among foreign travelers for good reason. The gates are simply gorgeous and – yes – photogenic. Just don’t expect to find yourself there alone.

Insider tip: Afterward, stop at the charming Vermillion Cafe for a sweet snack and coffee. Sit on the back porch, which overlooks a lovely stretch of forest, for especially serene vibes (spectacular in autumn).

If you still have energy left in the afternoon, head to Nishi Hongan-ji , a mammoth Buddhist temple complex that’s home to some of the largest wooden structures in Japan. After you marvel at the huge lanterns and expansive halls, stop by the brightly painted Chinese Gate, which dates back to the late 1500s. This temple is also within walking distance of Kyoto Station, and can be a good place to start or end your trip.

Gold exterior of the Kinkaku-ji (Golden Pavilion), a Zen Buddhist temple in Kyoto, Japan

Day 3: Kyoto

Go for the gold.

Kinkaku-Ji , sometimes called the Golden Pavilion, is among Kyoto’s (and Japan’s) most famous and photographed landmarks. This UNESCO World Heritage site , where a brilliant gold temple appears to float along the shores of a serene lake, is well worth braving the crowds for, especially in sunny weather when the reflection of the lake glints off of the temple’s exterior walls. Go early, packing your patience – and you’ll understand instantly why so many people flock here.

The exterior of School Bus Cafe, Kyoto, Japan

School Bus Coffee Stop is a charming spot for an easy, affordable breakfast or lunch in cozy, industrial-farmhouse-style surroundings. Comforting selections like bagel sandwiches and avocado toast are accompanied by the shop’s excellent, house-roasted coffee.

Modern love

For an aesthetic palate cleanser after a quick lunch, stop by the Kyoto City KYOCERA Museum of Art , which houses rotating exhibits, often of contemporary and modern art, in a fantastic brick structure that dates to the 1930s.

Taste sensation

And you’d be remiss if you stayed at the Mitsui without eating at its elegantly flamboyant Italian restaurant, Forni . Yes, there are pizzas and pastas on its à la carte menu. But I’d highly recommend the tasting dinner, where impeccably composed dishes like sea bream citrus tartare and grilled wagyu arrive on geometric plates and stands. It’s a feast for the eyes as well as the stomach.

Day 4: Osaka

Smart hotel.

After going luxe in Kyoto on meals and lodging, I came back to Osaka looking to save money without sacrificing too much comfort. I wasn’t ready to sleep in a sarcophagus-sized pod or get every meal at 7-Eleven. (Well, not every meal – just a few.) After getting off the train from Kyoto at the massive Shin-Osaka Station, I took the easy-to-use metro to one of the best places I’ve stayed in Japan, the chicly designed, austere-but-comfortable  Hotel Noum , just across the river from Temmabashi Station. The location made transportation connections easy and kept me sheltered from the stark urban rush of Umeda, Osaka’s high-rise business district. Rooms are small, comfortable and spotless; mine had a river view. The hotel also has an airy coffee shop in its lobby that attracts as many locals as travelers. I popped in here for a breakfast pastry and a latte and was ready to start the day.

Window(less) shopping

Even if you don’t stay in Umeda, visiting the neighborhood is a must. Spend a day wandering its cavernous, endless indoor shopping malls and underground food courts. You may never see daylight, but you will find everything from Hermès bags to the best 300-yen (US$2) gyoza you’ve ever tasted. I like to check in on the enormous red whale, which hangs suspended from the atrium of the Hep Five department store, which also happens to have a ferris wheel on its roof.

People on the sidewalk in the busy neighborhood of Umeda, Osaka, Japan

Enjoy a messy lunch

Train stations are where you’ll find some of the best food in Japan – and Osaka’s sprawling Umeda Station is no exception. My favorite train-station ramen is at Menya Takei, located behind the entry gates for the Hankyu Railway. Menya Takei specializes in tsukemen , in which the ramen noodles and broth are served separately. Dip the noodles into the broth to eat – yes, you’ll undoubtedly get it all over your clothes, but that’s part of the fun. Lots of laundry to do when you return home is a sure sign of a great trip.

Insider tip : Ask the gate agent to let you through. They’ll make you pay for a rail ticket on the way in, and then may refund you on the way out.

From Osaka, hop back onboard the Shinkansen for more exploring in Japan, or do what I did and catch a quick, affordable domestic flight to Tokyo’s Haneda airport to connect to your flight home.
