Extraordinary excursion.

DPS’ 6-DOOR 6.7L CREATION There are just some rides you can’t walk past without doing a double, or even triple-take. Diesel Performance Specialties (DPS) has built just such a vehicle by seamlessly mating a 6.7L King Ranch truck and a Ford Excursion SUV. With an insane 20 inches of lift, six doors, and wild amounts of chrome and powder coating, this 2016 “Excursion” is a truck like no other. But the question remains, how did they build it? It all started with two bare cabs and an idea. Shop owner Trevor Lima and the team at DPS wanted to build a flagship of a shop truck, but they didn’t want to build something cookie cutter. So the idea came about to build the SUV Ford didn’t–a 2016 take on a Ford excursion.

2

Thus begun a project that was under the knife for over a full year. Ford Excursions were built with 6.0L and 7.3L engines, neither of which were known to be powerhouses in stock form. Since DPS wanted to retain reliability and 100 percent emissions legality, they chose a newer ‘16 Ford with the 440 hp and 860 lb-ft 6.7L engine as a starting platform. From there, it was a complete custom build. Two frames were selected and then integrated into one, while also incorporating a drop frame that would allow for a huge lift. The body was also heavily modified (obviously) for the six-door setup, but the team also took the extra step of installing modern radiused rear fenders to compliment the setup up front. Virtually all of the bodywork was done in-house by DPS, including the fabrication of both front and rear bumpers.

4

Even with the skeleton of the truck finished (body and frame) there was still a ton of work left. Trevor was determined to have a drivable truck as well as a show truck, so they made lots of unseen changes, like re-gearing the front and rear axles with 4.88 gears, to help get the 11,000 pound ride moving. As the build went along, anything that wasn’t already painted white was either powder coated or chromed, including the entire underside of the truck. This meant the frame, axles, and suspension links would all become works of art, in addition to the custom crossover steering with PSC hydraulic assist.

7

Other than the body modifications, the bulk of the work definitely went into creating the wild 20 inches of lift that firmly sets the truck into the sky. Gone are the factory leaf springs, and instead the Excursion rides on Fox Racing coil-over shocks all the way around, that have a mammoth 14 inches of travel. The front Dana 60 axle and rear Sterling 10.5 are both hung by wildly unique rectangular 4-link suspension arms, that are also powder coated and chrome-plated. AMP Research Powersteps were also added so that passengers could actually climb into the Ford, and braided stainless brake lines were used because of the suspension’s immense travel.

11

After working hard on the Excursion for more than a year, it was finally finished. Is it an over-the-top show truck? Yes, but it’s also functional, and can seat a whole baseball team. Its stance is also something that’s immediately noticed, as the lift is nearly double the height that’s available in the regular aftermarket. For Trevor and DPS (who now builds show trucks out of Weatherford, Texas) it’s the perfect calling card, and quite a statement.

F-250 Super Duty Transformed Into $190,000 Ford Excursion Of Our Dreams

  • MegaRexx's SVN Overland is an F-250-based off-roading SUV.
  • Equipped with a host of off-road-enhancing features, a powerful diesel V8, and seating for seven.
  • The luxurious, leather-lined interior is feature-packed, but the SVN Overland is priced at a whopping $189,950

Not since the Excursion went west has Ford offered an SUV based on a heavy-duty truck. If the Expedition is too small for your tastes, MegaRexx has the solution to your needs with the new SVN Overland. Built on the 2023 F-250 Super Duty Crew Cab Lariat, the MegaRexx SVN offers seating for seven occupants across three rows, making this a near-unstoppable SUV that has space for the entire family. A trademark filed by Ford suggested the Excursion would be coming back , but that hasn't come to fruition, so the SVN Overland is the best next thing.

Before we get into the intricacies, let's take a look at what's under the hood. Powering the behemoth is a 6.7-liter Power Stroke V8 turbodiesel engine that produces 475 horsepower and a mountainous 1,050 lb-ft of torque. This is sent to all four wheels via a ten-speed automatic transmission. There's also a 4.88:1 electronic locking rear axle that provides the SVN Overland with its off-roading prowess.

2024 Ford F-250 Super Duty

Base MSRP $44,970

Engine 6.8L V8 Flex-fuel (FFV)

Horsepower 405 hp

Torque 445 lb-ft @ 4000 rpm

Transmission 10-Speed Automatic

Drivetrain Rear-Wheel Drive

Towing Capacity 23,000 pounds

The Modern-Day Excursion Ford Refuses To Build

From a distance, one could easily mistake the SVN Overland for an F-250 Super Duty with a canopy. Look closely, however, and you'll see MegaRexx has carried out extensive changes to the bodywork. This model sports Oxford White paintwork, a satin black grille, Overland badging, and Gloss Black-painted 20-inch Lariat Sport wheels. They have deep staggered lug nuts that improve performance in tough terrain.

Murdered-Out MegaRexx SVN Is A Nine-Seater Excursion Replacement

The aluminum wheels are wrapped in 37-inch Nitto Ridge Grapple M/T rubber. MegaRexx notes the tires have a unique hybrid tread that maximizes off-road performance without sacrificing on-road performance and comfort. While that's not overly important on a dedicated off-roader, the SVN Overland is aimed at customers who require heavy-duty capabilities and space for multiple occupants. It's worth noting MegaRexx also offers incredible pickup trucks, including the F-250-based MegaRaptor .

Unique Styling, Enhanced Off-Roading Capabilities

Rounding out the aesthetic changes is a black powder-coated front bumper from Fab Fours, a 30-inch Hella Black Magic LED light bar, quad Hella Black Magic LED lights, and a Warn VR Evo 12-S winch. The rear bumper boasts three-quarter-inch D-ring recovery points. Overall, the SVN Overland looks very interesting (if a bit unusual), but it's certainly a cool alternative to the Expedition.

Aside from the serious rubber, MegaRexx has fitted the F-250-based SUV with Carli 2.5-inch Commuter Suspension and Carli Spec two-inch IFP shocks (front and rear). There are also Carli front leveling coil springs, high clearance bump stop drops, and a Carli track bar. The SVN also has a leveling system.

Plenty Of Luxury, But It Comes At An Eye-Watering Price

Getting into this American leviathan is easy with chrome-trimmed, power-operated running boards. The interior has been trimmed in Black Onyx premium leather and extended to the second and third rows. Passengers in the middle row enjoy captain's chairs, while the power-folding third row has space for three passengers. Interestingly, MegaRexx has borrowed the bench seat from the Expedition.

MegaRexx Converts F-250 Super Duty To A 10-Seater SUV

Other luxuries include a Rear Heating and Air Package that provides rear passengers with separate air conditioning and heat, controlled via a Vintage Air Gen II system. The SVN also receives a Bang & Olufsen sound system, a 12-inch infotainment screen with wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, keyless entry, LED ambient lighting, a power-adjustable steering wheel column, and Ford's blind-spot monitoring. And what is the price of all of this? This particular model is selling for $189,950, which is a massive chunk of change. For that, you could have an F-150 Raptor R, an Expedition Timberline, and plenty of change.

Diesel HD Trucks Burn Significantly Less Fuel Than Gas Ones in Our Highway Test

We've tested 22 heavy-duty pickups on our HFE route, with the diesels averaging 20 percent better fuel economy than their gas-fed counterparts.

hfe hd truck roundup lead image

  • The diesel trucks averaged 18 mpg, and the gas-fed models averaged 15 mpg, which means the compression-ignition pickups returned 20 percent better fuel economy.
  • Still, of the 22 HD pickups we've put through our HFE test, only two diesels cracked 20 mpg–a 2018 Ram 2500 and a 2023 Ford F-250 Super Duty .

Welcome to Car and Driver' s Testing Hub , where we zoom in on the test numbers. We've been pushing vehicles to their limits since 1956 to provide objective data to bolster our subjective impressions (you can see how we test here ).

Since 2016, we've tested hundreds of new vehicles on our 75-mph highway fuel-economy route . All of our tests are performed on the same 200-mile out-and-back loop on Michigan's I-94, which was designed to give us a better idea of how a vehicle performs in the real world. However, certain vehicles aren't required to publish the typical EPA mileage estimates (i.e. those with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) greater than 8500 pounds). That applies to heavy-duty pickup trucks that are popular with Americans, so we've collected all the Ford, GM, and Ram models we've tested on our HFE route to compare their real-world results.

Diesel HD Trucks Dominate Our HFE Test

It's likely no surprise that these big and heavy trucks gulp rather than sip whatever fuel is in their massive tanks. Modern-day HD pickups all have a diverse selection of engines that include everything from Ford's monstrous gas-fed 7.3-liter V-8 to Chevrolet and GMC's venerable Duramax diesel 6.6-liter V-8 to Ram's Cummins diesel 6.7-liter inline-six that offers standard- and high-output versions; Ford's Power Stroke diesel 6.7-liter V-8 also offers two different outputs.

2017 chevrolet silverado 2500hd driving

No matter their displacement, cylinder count, or fuel type, none are exactly parsimonious at the pump. Still, one thing rings true: the diesel trucks we've tested burn significantly less fuel at highway speeds, averaging 20 percent better fuel economy than their gas-swilling counterparts. That's based on averages of 18 mpg for the diesel models and 15 mpg for the gas ones. It's worth noting that every truck we tested had an automatic transmission and four-wheel drive, but their bed lengths, body styles, tires, and equipment lists varied.

Diesel engines are a popular option among HD trucks thanks to their prodigious torque output and generally better fuel economy versus their gas counterparts. The latter is evident by the results of our HFE test. While 17 of the 22 trucks we tested were fitted with a diesel powertrain, only one gas-fed model—a 2024 Chevy Silverado 2500HD High Country that got 18 mpg—was in the top 10. Still, combined with the other four gassers, which had the four worst HFE results, they averaged 15 mpg.

2024 ford f250 super duty

Of the diesel trucks we've tested on our 75-mph real-world route, only two returned 20 mpg—a 2018 Ram 2500 with the S/O Cummins diesel and a 2023 Ford F-250 Super Duty fitted with a High-Output Power Stroke. The rest returned between 16 to 19 mpg. Altogether, the diesel trucks averaged 18 mpg. We'll point out that we also tested a supersized Ram 2500 AEV Prospector that got 15 mpg. The worst performing diesel, yes, but its aftermarket 40-inch tires make it an orange among a group of OEM apples. So we omitted it from the roundup of 22 trucks.

Zooming out on our results, three trucks returned 14 mpg, one returned 15, five returned 16, four returned 17, three returned 18, four returned 19, and two returned 20. Below are the five best and five worst real-world figures:

5 Best HFE Results

  • 2018 Ram 2500 Limited Crew Cab (diesel: 20 mpg)
  • 2023 Ford F-250 Super Duty Platinum Tremor Crew Cab (diesel: 20 mpg)
  • 2019 Ram 2500 Tradesman Regular Cab (diesel: 19 mpg)
  • 2017 Chevy Silverado 2500HD LT Double Cab (diesel: 19 mpg)
  • 2020 Chevy Silverado 2500HD High Country Crew Cab (diesel: 19 mpg)

5 Worst HFE Results

  • 2020 Ford F-350 Super Duty Platinum Tremor SuperCrew (gas: 14 mpg)
  • 2017 Ram 2500 Laramie Crew Cab (gas: 14 mpg)
  • 2020 Chevy Silverado 2500HD Custom Crew Cab (gas: 14 mpg)
  • 2017 Ford F-250 Super Duty XL SuperCab (gas: 15 mpg)
  • 2017 Chevy Silverado 3500HD LT Crew Cab DRW (diesel: 16 mpg)

We don't point these figures out to attack the segment. After all, these trucks are intended for tough jobs, towing and hauling immensely heavy loads, not hypermiling. Instead, we simply sought to illuminate the real-world mpg differences between the HD pickups we've tested as well as highlight the best and worst when it comes to highway duty. After all, the optional diesels often add a lot to the price of a truck. Take the 2017 (gas) and 2018 (diesel) Ram 2500. Running 50,000 miles (unloaded) on the highway represents a 625-gallon savings. You might not recoup the optional cost in a year, but depending on how you use it, the lifetime cost may be close. Now, who has a 10,000-pound trailer they can give us to redo all this testing?

Kamaz FTL hauler registers NatCar brand

excursion trucks diesel

MOSCOW. Sept 4 (Interfax) - National Carrier JSC, the full truckload freight trucking company headed by former Globaltruck CEO Ilya Sattarov that Russian truck maker Kamaz founded this summer, applied to register the brand NatCar at the end of August, the registry of federal intellectual property service Rospatent showed.

The NatCar brand is also mentioned in the recruitment ads of National Carrier, which is actively looking for E-class drivers. It is offering working with this year's model Kamaz diesel trucks from the flagship K5 line and new dry goods (curtainsider) and refrigerated trailers.

National Carrier was founded on July 7 in Moscow with charter capital of 1 billion rubles, the Unified State Register of Legal Entities showed. The company registered two branches in early August, in Yekaterinburg and Elektrostal, Moscow Region. The company specializes in truck logistics and associated activities, including digitization processes.

A spokesman for National Carrier told Interfax earlier that the company plans to provide FTL trucking services using its own fleet, "as well as the resources of hired truckers." The company's fleet will initially consist of 400 semi-trailer trucks with a 50/50 ratio of curtainside to refrigerated trailers, and it plans to primarily operate on domestic routes, he said.

The company has preliminary agreements with major customers among marketplaces and retailers in the FMCG and DIY segments, the spokesman said. Strong demand for trucking services is expected toward the end of the year, so there is interest from customers, he said.

Kamaz marketing director Ashot Arutyunyan announced at the International Moscow Automotive Forum at the end of August that the truck maker was the principal investor in National Carrier. He did not comment on the new company's shareholder structure, but said it is a Kamaz startup.

I-95 in Norwalk, Connecticut closed after fiery truck crash. Highway may not reopen for days.

By Tony Aiello , Mark Prussin , Renee Anderson

Updated on: May 2, 2024 / 5:30 PM EDT / CBS New York

NORWALK, Conn. --  I-95 in Norwalk, Connecticut is closed in both directions and may not reopen for days after a fuel truck crashed and burst into flames  under an overpass Thursday morning.

Local roads are a chaotic mess as thousands of drivers traveling one of the busiest interstates in the U.S. are being diverted around the accident scene.

Officials called it a chain-reaction crash. Just before dawn, a car swerved in front of a truck pulling a flatbed trailer as a fuel tanker approached the Fairfield Avenue overpass just past Exit 15 south.

Bridge must be demolished

chopper-230p-0502-hi-res-still-15-04-3225.jpg

Flames spread down the highway and roasted the overpass. The fire caused significant damage to the structure and the gas, phone and cable utility lines running under it.

"This bridge is less than 10 years old, but the damage was pretty severe due to the amount of gasoline that was in the tanker. It ignited directly underneath the bridge structure. The seal did begin to overheat and warp," a Connecticut Department of Transportation official said. "Unfortunately it's not able to be safely reopened in either direction underneath that bridge."

The official said crews will begin work to remove the bridge as soon as possible and hoped to have the highway open by Monday morning's commute.

The closed stretch of I-95 serves 160,000 vehicles per day, according to Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont's office.

"The traffic jams are horrendous"

aiello-12p-pkg-norwalk-wcbsa2tp-hi-res-still-00-00-1013.jpg

"Thank God no serious injuries, but it has resulted in the closing of I-95 North and South and that is incredible in terms of the traffic jams and what's happening there," said Lamont.

Hours the fire was put out, the charred remnants of two trucks and a passenger vehicle sat on the shuttered highway between Exits 15 and 16.

Northbound lane closures  started at Exit 13 in Darien , according to the Connecticut Department of Transportation.

"I know what an incredible inconvenience this is for people and all I can ask you to do is stay away from that area as best you can. The traffic jams are horrendous," said Lamont.

Drivers from Bridgeport to Port Chester, New York received text alerts to avoid I-95 and trucking companies were told to use I-87 and I-84 instead, Lamont said.

"For a lot of truckers, we're on the clock, can only work 14 hours and drive 11 hours. So the impact, this slows down the delivery time for our loads," said Avril Jenerette, a trucker.

Drivers should expect delays on the Merritt Parkway, too, while crews work to clear 95.

"Our highways team is working closely with Connecticut's DOT on the tanker fire that has closed I-95 in Norwalk. Please heed local authorities on detours and avoid the area if possible. Thank you to the first responders who are dealing with the fire and keeping other drivers safe," Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg posted on social media.

Thousands of gallons of fuel spilled

norwalk-truck-fire-aftermath-2.jpg

The area will stay closed "for an extended period," Lamont said  on social media , as crews investigate the crash, clean up the fuel and monitor the structural integrity of the overpass.

Scott Hill, chief engineer for Connecticut's DOT, said the overpass is "stable and safe," but was damaged in the crash and is closed until it can be further assessed.

"There is damage to the bridge. So I want to make sure everybody knows that. We don't know how extensive yet, but it's not a collapse issue and the area is safe," said Hill.

Utility wires were dangling from the overpass.

Hazmat crews responded to the spill and had concerns about material getting into the Norwalk River. The truck was carrying 8,500 gallons of fuel and 75% either burned or spilled onto the highway, officials said.

Norilsk: The city built by gulag prisoners where Russia guards its Arctic secrets

Environmental activists are frustrated by how authorities handled a diesel spill which poured into two Arctic rivers in late May.

Arctic suffers worst ever industrial spill

The drive from Norilsk airport to the city takes you past mile after mile of crumbling, Soviet-era factories.

It looks like an endless, rusting scrapyard - a jumble of pipes, industrial junk and frost-bitten brickwork. If you were looking for an industrial apocalypse film setting, this would be your place - but you're unlikely to get the permissions.

Norilsk was built in Stalin's times by gulag prisoners. This gritty industrial city is a testament to their endurance both of the cruelty of Stalin's regime and of the harsh polar climate. There were no thoughts then on how to build to protect the environment, just to survive it.

Vasily Ryabinin doesn't think much has changed, at least in ecological terms. He used to work for the local branch of the federal environmental watchdog, Rosprirodnadzor, but quit in June after exposing what he says was a failure to investigate properly the environmental impact of the gigantic diesel spill which poured into two Arctic rivers in late May.

At 21,000 tonnes, it was the largest industrial spill in the polar Arctic .

Despite the Kremlin declaring a federal emergency and sending a host of different agencies to participate in the clean-up, just last week Mr Ryabinin and activists from Greenpeace Russia found another area where technical water used in industrial processes was being pumped directly into the tundra from a nearby tailing pond. Russia's investigative committee has promised to investigate.

"The ecological situation here is so bad," Mr Ryabinin says.

"The latest constructions such as the tailing pond at the Talnack ore-processing plant were built exclusively by Nornickel chief executive Vladimir Potanin's team and supposedly in accordance with ecological standards, but on satellite images you can see that all the lakes in the vicinity have unnatural colours and obviously something has got into them."

Nornickel Plant and container (on the left) which had the leak. Pic: Anastasya Leonova

Mining company Nornickel would disagree. It has admitted flagrant violations at the tailing pond and suspended staff it deems responsible at both the Talnack plant and at Norilsk Heat and Power plant no 3 where the diesel spill originated from.

On Thursday it appointed Andrey Bougrov, from its senior management board, to the newly-created role of senior vice president for environmental protection. It has a clear environmental strategy, provides regular updates on the status of the spill, and its Twitter feed is filled with climate-related alerts.

But what investors read is very different to the picture on the ground.

21,000 tonnes of diesel oil has spilled into two rivers in Norilsk

Norilsk used to be a closed city - one of dozens across the Soviet Union shut off to protect industrial secrets. Foreigners need special permissions approved by the Federal Security Service (FSB) to enter the region. It would take an invitation from Nornickel to make that happen and, for the past month since the spill, that has not been forthcoming.

Unlike in Soviet times, Russian citizens are now free to come and go. That's why our Sky News Moscow team were able to fly in and travel around the city, even if getting to the spill site was blocked. What they were able to film provides a snapshot of the immense challenge Russia faces in upgrading its Soviet-era industrial infrastructure, particularly at a time when climate change is melting the permafrost on which much of it was built.

The Russian city of Norilsk. Pic: Anastasya Leonova

Just downwind from one of the rusting factories on the city outskirts is a huge expanse of dead land. The skeletal remains of trees stand forlorn against the howling Arctic winds. Sulphur dioxide poisoning has snuffed the life out of all that lived here. Norilsk is the world's worst emitter of sulphur dioxide by a substantial margin.

"For 80km south of here everything is dead," Mr Ryabinin says, "and for at least 10km in that direction too. Everything here depends on the wind."

Sample took by Vasily Ryabinin near the Nornickel plant in Norilsk, Russia, on the day of an accident. Pic: Vasily Ryabinin

Immediately after the spill, Mr Ryabinin filmed and took samples from the Daldykan river just a few kilometres from the fuel tank which had leaked. By that point the river was a churning mix of diesel and red sludge dredged up from the riverbed by the force of the leak. Norilsk's rivers have turned red before and the chemical residues have sunk to the bottom, killing all life there. Nothing has lived in those rivers for decades.

In his capacity as deputy head of the local environmental watchdog, Mr Ryabinin says he insisted that he be allowed to fly further north to check the levels of contamination in Lake Pyasino and beyond.

Nornickel at the time claimed the lake was untouched by the spill. Mr Ryabinin says his boss encouraged him to let things be.

"I can't be sure I would have found anything, but this sort of confrontation - making sure I didn't go there with a camera, let alone with bottles for taking samples, it was all very clear to me. It was the final straw."

Rosprirodnadzor refused to comment to Sky News on Mr Ryabinin's allegations or suggestions that the agency was working hand in hand with Nornickel.

Georgy Kavanosyan is an environmental blogger with a healthy 37,000 following on YouTube. Shortly after the spill, he set out for Lake Pyasino and to the Pyasina River beyond to see how far the diesel had spread.

"We set out at night so that the Norilsk Nickel security wouldn't detect us. I say at night, but they've got polar nights there now, north of the Arctic Circle. So it's still light but it's quieter and we managed to go past all the cordons."

He is one of the few to have provided evidence that the diesel has in fact travelled far beyond where the company admits. Not just the 1,200km (745m) length of Lake Pyasino but into the river beyond.

He says his measurements indicated a volume of hydrocarbons dissolved in the water of between two and three times normal levels. He thinks after he published his findings on YouTube, the authorities' vigilance increased.

Greenpeace Russia have spent the last two weeks trying to obtain samples from Lake Pyasino and the surrounding area. They have faced difficulties getting around and flying their samples out for independent analysis.

They are now waiting for results from a laboratory in St Petersburg but say the samples remain valid technically for just four days after collection and that they weren't able to make that deadline due to the authorities' actively obstructing their work.

Vasily Ryabinin and Elena Sakirko from Greenpeace. Pic: Anastasya Leonova

Elena Sakirko from Greenpeace Russia specialises in oil spills and says this has happened to her before. This time, a police helicopter flew to the hunter's hut where they were staying and confiscated the fuel for the boat they were using. Then a deputy for the Moscow city parliament tasked with bringing the samples back from Norilsk was forced to go back empty-handed.

"We were told at the airport we needed permission from the security department of Nornickel," Ms Sakirko says. "We asked them to show us some law or statement to prove that this was legal or what the basis for this was, but they haven't showed us anything and we still don't understand it."

Nornickel announced this week that the critical stage of the diesel spill is over. The company is now finalising dates for a press tour for foreign media and for other international environmentalists.

Mr Ryabinin thinks this should have happened weeks ago.

"If we don't let scientists come to the Arctic region to evaluate the impact of the accident, then in the future if anything similar happens, we won't know what to do."

A spokesperson for Nornickel said the company "is actively cooperating with the scientific community and will meticulously assess both the causes and effects of the accident."

The Russian city of Norilsk. Pic: Anastasya Leonova

Nornickel considers permafrost thawing to be the primary cause of the accident, but is waiting for the end of investigation before making a final statement, the spokesperson said.

They added that the company "accepts full responsibility for the incidents on its sites these past two months and holds itself accountable for any infrastructural deficits or poor decisions by personnel.

"The imperative is to do everything to clean up our sites, instil a stronger culture of transparency and safety in our workforce, and ensure that such situations do not occur in the future."
