Chair Lewis in Bucharest, Romania to Highlight EXIM’s Nuclear Energy Priorities

Bucharest, Romania – Export-Import Bank of the United States (EXIM) President and Chair Reta Jo Lewis traveled to Bucharest, Romania last week as part of the U.S. delegation to the Summit of the Three Seas Initiative (3SI) and the 3SI Business Forum, led by Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry and Assistant Secretary for Energy Resources, Geoffrey Pyatt. While in Bucharest, Chair Lewis met with government leaders, including the Prime Minister of Romania Marcel Ciolacu, Vice Prime Minister of Romania Marian Neacșu, 3SI government leaders and private sector companies to discuss EXIM’s efforts in the nuclear energy sector and ongoing work to support U.S. exporters looking to do business in the region. 

“Nuclear energy can play an important role in supporting the global energy transition, and our agency is committed to ensuring that U.S. companies have the financing tools they need to advance critical nuclear projects,” said EXIM President and Chair Reta Jo Lewis. “It was an honor to travel to Romania to continue building upon EXIM’s strong work in this sector and deepen the U.S.-Romania commercial relationship.”

On Tuesday, Chair Lewis met with Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs State Secretary Iulian Fota, where she discussed EXIM’s ongoing work in the country and ways to collaborate to promote joint economic growth. While in Bucharest, she also met with U.S. Ambassador to Romania Kathleen Kavalec to discuss ways EXIM financing can support U.S companies looking to do business in Romania.

On Wednesday, Chair Lewis met with private sector leaders and delivered remarks at an event hosted by AmCham Romania titled U.S. – Romania Economic Forum: Innovation for Prosperity . She then joined the U.S. delegation for a nuclear energy event and SMR simulator tour at Politehnica University Bucharest.

On Thursday, Chair Lewis began the day by meeting with Japan Bank for International Collaboration (JBIC) Governor Nobumitsu Hayashi, where they discussed operationalizing a co-financing agreement that remains in effect and ways to collaborate to advance priority projects, including in the nuclear energy sector. She then met with Romanian Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu, Vice-Prime Minister Marian Neacșu, and Minister of Finance Marcel Bolos, where they discussed opportunities to collaborate to strengthen the economies of both Romania and the U.S.

Later that afternoon, Chair Lewis met with Romanian Minister of Energy Sebastian-Ioan Burduja, where she highlighted how the agency’s financing tools can help advance priorities in the nuclear energy sector. She also held meetings with Beata Daszyńska-Muzyczka, Chairperson of the 3SI Supervisory Board, and Cosmin Ghita, Chief Executive Officer of Nuclearelectrica.

During COP27 last November, Chair Lewis, alongside Special Presidential Envoy Kerry, President of Romania Klaus Iohannis, Energy Minister Virgil Popescu, and Assistant Secretary Pyatt, announced the issuance of two letters of interest for U.S. exports being used at a nuclear power project in Romania.

Earlier this year, EXIM also issued another letter of interest to Fluor and NuScale totaling $3 billion for a potential small modular reactor project for RoPower in Romania. Letters of interest are nonbinding statements that indicate that EXIM is open for business in the market identified and is willing to consider financing for a given export transaction should an application be submitted.

Bucharest, March 27 th , 2023 – The Export Import Bank of Romania – EximBank SA will become Exim Banca Românească starting May 10 th , 2023,  a change in its name and logo approved today by the Extraordinary General Meeting of EximBank’s shareholders.

“We adopted this change because, although in over 30 years of activity EximBank has considerably expanded its addressability, the name still reflected a  restrictive almost niche activity that did not reflect the real  scope of work of our bank.  Also the EximBank brand was set for the public eye as  the < exporters’ bank>. Now that EximBank is a universal bank, after the merger with Banca Românească, we saw it as a natural process  to adopt a new identity that would mark the extension of our portfolio with the retail activity. As such, we considered it important to make the change more visible, adopting a new brand that would reflect everything we are now: a new top Romanian bank, a reliable banking partner for everyone, retail or corporate, iexporters included This is, Exim Banca Românească”, said Traian Halalai, the Executive President of EximBank.

The new brand identity focuses on  the fusion between the two banks, capitalizing on the notoriety of the respective brands – it keeps the Exim abbreviation adding the name of Banca Românească, maintains the well-known visual elements of EximBank and includes in the color palette the colors of the national flag  (red, yellow and blue) for emphasizing the local, national roots of the bank and promoting the Romanian values.

EximBank is a universal bank, 100% Romanian, ranked in the top 10 largest credit institutions by assets. The bank offers its clients, both retail and corporate, a wide range of quality products and services, tailored to their needs.

EximBank operates a national distribution network of 83 branches and 26 Corporate Units, the latter ones being dedicated exclusively to companies, this network allowing the bank to be close to the retail and corporate clients and to implement various Romanian and European development programs.

Along with the specific components of a universal bank, after the merger, Exim Banca Romaneasca  will continue to act on the state guarantees and insurance segment, according to the Romanian state mandate.

Unifying Worlds: Teodora Brody’s tour kicks off in Bucharest, heads for U.S.

Unifying Worlds , a tour that will see vocalist Teodora Brody perform in Romania and the U.S., kicks off in Bucharest this weekend.

The Bucharest concert, scheduled for May 26 at Sala Luceafărul, is described as an experience at the intersection of jazz, classical music, and the folk singing tradition  doina . 

The artist will take the stage alongside Călin Grigoriu (guitar), Andrei Kivu (cello), and Joca Perpignan (percussions) for a concert that pays homage to Spanish cellist and composer Pablo Casals. Novel interpretations of works by Beethoven, Mozart, Bach, and contemporary composer Max Richter are also part of the program.

The U.S. leg of the tour will showcase a program covering the rhapsodies composed by George Enescu and reinterpretations of works by Beethoven, Bartók, and Pachelbel, all with the aim of bringing to the forefront the fusion of classical, jazz and  doina .

The U.S. concerts take place in Chicago (Northeastern Illinois University, June 18), Washington, D.C. (The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, June 20), and New York (Baruch Performing Arts Center, Engleman Recital Hall, June 21).

Born in Romania, Teodora Brody initially trained in classical jazz and rose to prominence in the late 1990s and early 2000s singing with jazz pianist Johnny Răducanu. She pioneered the fusion of jazz with  doina  – Romania’s improvisatory folk singing tradition – and is credited with introducing international audiences to this deeply emotive music. 

Over the past 25 years, she has forged a singular path on the international jazz scene, collaborating with artists such as Stanley Jordan, Les Paul, Curtis Fuller, Eric Legnini or Al Coplay, appearing at venues in Montreux, Marciano, and Lugano. In the U.S., she performed at the Library of Congress, the Corcoran Gallery of Art, or legendary clubs such as Iridium New York and Blues Alley in Washington DC.

In recent years, she began exploring classical music from a fresh perspective, with vocal renditions of masterpieces by Beethoven, Bach, Enescu, and Bartók. Her latest album,  Rhapsody , recorded with the London Symphony Orchestra, has been described as a "thrilling journey into the classical repertoire."

In 2024, she tours to the U.S. and Europe, with inter-disciplinary collaborations in a variety of formats, from symphony orchestra to ensemble to her own quartet of vocals, guitar, cello and Brazilian percussion.

Romania to build six SMRs with US financing

Romania, supported by US, is to build six small modular reactors (SMRs) in the locality of Doicesti, Dambovita, some 90 kilometres from Bucharest. The reactors can power 46,000 homes and could create 4,000 jobs, amounting to an investment of $6bn partly financed by the US. The reactors, designed by US NuScale, could be operational by the end of 2029.

According to Romanian Energy Minister Sebastian Burduja, the project will see Romania transformed into a leader in the nuclear field. “For too many years, we've been used to catching up, often breathlessly, behind others. It's time for us to write the future of the world,” he said. “Romania can be on the world map with the first nuclear power plant, the first small modular reactors.”

Burduja said discussions with American experts and officials had confirmed the safety of the technology noting that a similar plant was to be built in the US state of Idaho, but the project was cancelled due to high costs amounting to roughly $9.2bn whereas the plant in Romania will be cheaper.

“The Idaho project did not benefit from infrastructure, transformers, electrical lines, or river water. As such, it required more engineering improvements,” said Cosmin Ghita, CEO of Romania’s nuclear utility Nuclearelectrica (SNN).

The US Ambassador to Bucharest, Kathleen Kavalec, announced that the US EXIM Bank and the US International Development Finance Corporation had committed to financing to ensure the success of the project in the amount of $3bn and $1bn, respectively. “Their financial investment underscores our shared commitment to a sustainable energy future. We recognise that the path to progress lies in collaboration, and this project embodies that. Works are scheduled to last until 2030.

“I have just had the opportunity to tour the Doicesti Small Modular Reactor (SMR) site. The rapid progress here is a testament to Romania’s vision, guiding us toward a cleaner, more sustainable energy future,” she said in the press release. “As I have just seen, Romania is poised to become a regional clean energy hub. The Doicesti SMR project is at the forefront of this transformation.”

She continued: “Experience has shown that the American NuScale technology being used in the project is safe. As the sole existing commercial SMR technology approved by the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission, it comes with assurances of the highest levels of safety and security. The United States is committed to deploying these types of cutting-edge solutions to combat the climate crisis and expand access to clean energy.”

She said the US Embassy team “collaborates daily with SNN, RoPower, NuScale, and Fluor – the driving forces behind Doicesti’s transformation, to move this project forward. Together, we can make Doicesti a shining star in the constellation of carbon-free energy generation”.
