  • Sightseeing in Gothenburg and Oslo

Series 2, Episode 4 Great Continental Railway Journeys. This series provides a wonderful window to the many different places in Europe that you can reach and explore by train. On this train journey Michael Portillo goes north to Norway, a route that forms the basis of this interesting 9-day rail holiday which is a scenic route that provides a snapshot of life in Denmark, Sweden and Norway.

Fly to Copenhagen and transfer by train to the city centre hotel for 2 nights.

Free day for sightseeing. City sights include the Little Mermaid statue, 17th Century Citadel (Kastallet) and the Amalienborg Palace which is home to the Danish Royal Family. The city is also the location for Tivoli, one of Denmark's most popular attractions. It is an unusual mix of gardens, amusements and restaurants and even has its own fireworks factory supplying the weekly display!

Transfer by rail mid-morning via the Oresund Bridge allows you to reach Malmö in just over 30 minutes. Stay 2 nights in the Savoy hotel. It is almost certain that Lenin was a visitor to the hotel en route from Switzerland, where he had been in exile, to St Petersburg having been granted passage through Germany in a sealed train.

Day trip from Malmö to Lund. The cathedral here houses an historic timepiece and the covered market offers all the local delicacies such as pickled herring and crayfish.

Continuing north on an inter city service to Gothenburg which is Sweden's second city. The city sits on the Göta River and has a strong connection with Scotland. The Gotha Canal starts here and is a west-east waterway across the country. It was constructed by Thomas Telford and is open for pleasure cruises in the summer months.

Free day to allow further exploration of the city and a half day trip by train to the power station and waterfalls at Trollhättan.

Leaving Gothenburg we follow the west coast northwards and cross into Norway to reach the capital city of Oslo. The city has a wealth of museums (famous sons include Ibsen and Munch) and exhibitions such as the Kon Tiki and Viking Ship charting maritime history. The ski jump at Holmenkollen is reached by metro from the city centre and as well as housing an impressive ski museum there is a new zip-line attraction for thrill seekers!

Full day sightseeing in Oslo.

Transfer to the airport for early afternoon flight back to London.

How to take the rail journey from Copenhagen / København to Oslo

Share this journey with a friend..., københavn / copenhagen to oslo by train.

There aren't any direct trains from Denmark to Norway, but it only requires one straightforward connection between trains; and the route is also rather lovely! The number of trains on from Goteborg has also doubled on the latest timetable!

Routes you can take to go from København / Copenhagen to Oslo

When travelling between most cities by train there is only one logical option, though on other journeys there is a choice between different trains or alternative routes. If different options are available you can use the info to decide which is best for you.

great continental railway journeys copenhagen to oslo

SJ is the national rail operator in Sweden, so journeys within Sweden can be booked online on its relatively simple to use ticketing service, which is convenient, as there are significant savings to be made on long-distance express journeys. SJ now also sells tickets for journeys by Snalltaget trains, but not the Flix and MTR services which compete with SJ on the Stockholm to Gothenburg route.

SJ also sells tickets for journeys by train between Sweden and both Denmark and Norway.

Travel Information

The trains between København/Copenhagen and Göteborg C are hourly, but the service on from Göteborg to Oslo is less frequent; though the number of trains on to the Norwegian capital has been doubled on the latest timetable;

So the following departures (times are the usual times from København H station) are those which offer the onward connections: 05:30; 07:30; 09:30; 11:30; 13:30 and 15:30,

The time between arrival and departure in Göteborg C station ranges from 48 mins to 75 mins, so you shouldn't have to race against the clock to make the connection

The usual first train of the day from Hamburg to København is typically scheduled to arrive in København H station at shortly after 13:30, but as can be seen above - this will now be in time to make an end-to-end journey from Hamburg to Oslo in a single day by train,

This journey is made up of 1 change.

You will be travelling on one of these trains....

Good to Know

Final destination : Göteborg C

Departing from Kobenhavn/Copenhagen :

These Oresundtag trains call at  Østerport  and  Nørreport stations before they depart from København H station.

If you will be heading to Göteborg from central Kobenhavn/Copenhagen, or stations on the Kobenhaven Metro - including Kongens Nytorv (the closest station to Nyhavn ) - the quickest and easiest option is to board these trains at Norreport.

At peak times these Oressundtag trains can be very busy, so finding seats available in 2nd class is not guaranteed if you board at København H station.

Alternative route for rail pass users:

If you have a Eurail or InterRail pass valid in both Denmark and Sweden, an option is to take the train from Kobenhavn/Copenhagen to Helsingor and then take the ferry from Helsingor to Helsingborg; connecting in Helsingborg for an Oresundtag train on to Goteborg.

The optimum connections are possible if you take the trains to Helsingoer from København H station which depart at 31mins past the hour.

Eurail and InterRail passes are valid on the ferry.

The Swedish seaside shortly after departing Helsingborg

The train will travel between Denmark and Sweden on the Oresund Line.

After departure from CPH Lufthavn the train will enter a tunnel and then emerge on to a man-made island from which it will ascend on to The Oresund Bridge. The train will spend around 3 - 4 mins travelling across the bridge.

However, don't expect spectacular views from the bridge; though travelling across it will be a thrill for engineering fans.

Then from the left of the train, north of Helsingborg are occasional coastal views of the Swedish coast

Journey Features

Final Destination: Oslo S

Leaving Goteborg behind

This journey is delightful, but if you can, travel this way before the end of the year The journey currently has a spectacular climax with the sea views  from the left of the train (when facing the direction of travel) between Ski and Oslo.

But when the Follo line opens in mid-December, the trains will be diverted into what will be Norway's longest rail tunnel, for this part of the journey.

The best of the views overall are from the left of the train; there are also views over the Gota alv River as the train leaves Goteborg and lake side views near the border from this side of the train.

Train travel UK & Ireland...

Train travel in europe..., train travel in asia..., train travel in africa..., train travel in america..., train travel in australasia, train or ferry between copenhagen & oslo.

There's no need to fly!  You can travel between Copenhagen & Oslo by train with one simple change at Gothenburg.  Or you can take the luxurious overnight ferry with restaurants, bars, entertainment and cosy private cabins, a remarkably inexpensive & time-effective option.  Or you can take a longer rail route through Sweden using comfortable SJ trains with bistro car & free WiFi with cheap advance-purchase fares from only €34.  This page explains these 3 options.

small bullet point

Option 1, Copenhagen to Oslo by train

This is the fastest most direct train route, with only 1 change of train and a range of good departures every day.  You take a comfortable air-conditioned Öresund train between Copenhagen (København H) & Gothenburg (Göteborg Central) then an equally comfortable Norwegian train between Gothenburg & Oslo Sentral.  No bus necessary!  This is also a good route for Eurail / Interrail passholders, as no reservations are needed, just hop on.

Copenhagen = København H .  Gothenburg Central = Göteborg Central .

You can check Copenhagen-Gothenburg times at www.oresundstag.se .  You can check Gothenburg-Oslo times at www.entur.no or www.vy.no .

How much does it cost?

The standard full-flex fare from Copenhagen to Oslo (or vice versa) is 951 SEK (€87) bought at www.oresundstag.se .

You can buy this ticket at that price even on the day of travel.

It's cheaper if you split the booking:

Copenhagen-Gothenburg is 521 SEK (€48) full-flex standard fare at www.oresundstag.se .

Gothenburg-Oslo advance-purchase fares start at 249 Krone (€24) at entur.no if you book a few weeks ahead.

How to buy tickets

The easy way is to book from København H to Oslo S (or vice versa) at the Öresund Trains website www.oresundstag.se .

Tip:   When the search results appear, click Search filter upper right.  Select 1 stop , train , via Goteborg Centralstation.   Check carefully that the journey you select has only 1 change at Göteborg Central, and involves an Oresundstag and a Vy train, not a bus or Vy express bus.

Tip:   Do not try to book months & months ahead, there's no need and trains may be missing from the data! Wait until close to departure date, it won't sell out and the full-flex price doesn't change.  You can book the day before, if you like.

The cheaper way to book is to split the booking to take advantage of cheaper advance-purchase lowfares for the Norwegian Vy train.

First go to the Öresund Trains website www.oresundstag.se and buy a ticket between Köbenhavn H & Göteborg C.  You print your own ticket or can show it in their app.

Then go to the Vy website www.vy.no or the Entur site entur.no and buy an advance-purchase ticket between Goteborg C & Oslo S.  You can load your ticket into the Vy app or download it in PDF format which you can print or show on your laptop or phone.

What are the trains like?

You travel between Copenhagen & Gothenburg Central on the hourly Öresund train , 1st & 2nd class, free WiFi but no catering so bring your own food & drink.  It travels from Denmark to Sweden over the Öresund fixed link , a massive bridge-tunnel-bridge structure between Denmark & Sweden.  It's like flying a hundred feet above the sea, quite an experience.

You travel between Gothenburg & Oslo on a comfortable Norwegian intercity train run by Vy, 2nd class only, there are vending machines for tea, coffee, soft drinks & snacks which accept contactless cards.

Option 2, Copenhagen to Oslo by ferry

DFDS operate a luxurious overnight ferry between Copenhagen & Oslo.  With bars, restaurant, cinema and cosy private cabins plus great scenery in Oslo Fjord, it would be my own preferred way to travel between Denmark & Norway.

Copenhagen ► Oslo

In Copenhagen the DFDS ferry terminal is 4 km (3 miles) from Copenhagen main station , see map of Copenhagen showing DFDS ferry terminal .

Taxis are available or you can take an 8-minute suburban train ride from Copenhagen main station to Nordhavn station from where it's a 10-minute 750m walk to the ferry terminal, easy enough even with luggage.  There's also a DFDS shuttle bus from Norreport station, see www.dfds.com .

The ferry sails from Copenhagen at 16:30 (15:00 some days) and arrives in Oslo at 10:00.

The ships on this route are the Crown Seaways & the Pearl Seaways , with restaurants, bars, cinema and sauna.  All passengers travel in comfortable private cabins, even the standard cabins come with en suite shower & toilet and satellite TV.  To travel in luxury, treat yourself to DFDS's famous Commodore Class, some suites with private balconies with sea view.

Make sure you're on deck in the morning when the ferry sails up the scenic Oslo Fjord, a stunning way to arrive in Norway.  You'll see coast on either side of the ship from about 06:30 and she enters the narrow part of the fjord by about 07:00.

Oslo ► Copenhagen

The ferry sails from Oslo at 15:00, arriving Copenhagen at 10:00 next morning.

The ships on this route are the Crown Seaways & the Pearl Seaways , with restaurants, bars, cinema, and a sauna.  All passengers travel in comfortable private cabins, all cabins have en suite shower & toilet and satellite TV.  To travel in luxury, treat yourself to DFDS's famous Commodore Class, some suites with private balconies with sea view.  Enjoy the departure from Oslo and the scenic voyage down Oslo Fjord, highly recommended...

In Copenhagen the ferry terminal is about 4 km (3 miles) from Copenhagen main station , see map of Copenhagen showing DFDS ferry terminal , Taxis are available or you can walk 10 minutes / 750m from the ferry terminal to Nordhavn station and take an 8-minute suburban train ride to Copenhagen main station .  There's also a DFDS shuttle bus from Norreport station, see www.dfds.com .  In Copenhagen I'd allow at least 90 minutes between the ferry arrival and an onward train connection.

Fares start at around €120 for 1 person travelling solo including private standard cabin, or €120 for 2 people travelling together sharing a 2-berth standard cabin.  Given the cost of Scandinavian hotels, this is a bargain.

Option 2, book at hotel booking website www.booking.com .

You can only book the main cabin types here, but prices seem to be cheaper than on the DFDS website, so check it out.

What's the ferry like?

Option 3, copenhagen to oslo by sj trains - cheapest option....

This option takes longer than option 1 (between 11 or 12 hours compared to 8 hours for option 1) and may involve a second change of train, but it's much cheaper.  That's because the Swedish Railways offers cheap advance-purchase fares between Copenhagen & Oslo on their own trains, whereas the direct Copenhagen-Gothenburg-Oslo rail route only has full-flex standard fares (at least, for the whole journey).  This makes it the cheapest option, assuming you're able to book a few weeks in advance and commit to a specific departure.  It's a day at leisure travelling across 3 countries, on top quality trains with bistro cars & free WiFi.

Check times at the Swedish Railways website www.sj.se -

When the results appear, click Filter and select Only SJ trains .  This eliminates journeys involving buses, as well as the direct rail route.

Check times at the Swedish Railways website www.sj.se .

You leave Copenhagen on a comfortable SJ X2000 train with bistro car, power sockets at all seats & free WiFi.  This crosses from Denmark to Sweden over the Öresund fixed link , a massive bridge-tunnel-bridge structure.  You then change once or twice within Sweden onto other comfortable SJ trains, most also with bistro car, power sockets at all seats & free WiFi to reach Oslo.

EPISODE: 4 - Copenhagen to Oslo

Michael Portillo explores Scandinavia on the first leg of a trip from Copenhagen to Oslo, braving one of the world's oldest rollercoasters in the Danish capital's Tivoli Gardens. He then crosses the Oresund Bridge linking Denmark to Sweden, retracing the journey of a train that carried a revolutionary Russian passenger on an epic voyage. Michael Portillo concludes his journey around Scandinavia, sampling a smorgasbord in the Swedish city of Lund before test-driving a vintage Volvo in Gothenburg. Crossing the border into Norway, he visits the capital Oslo to learn how in 1913 the nation expressed its own distinctively modern identity in plays, paintings and polar exploration.

[ edit ] Information

Michael Portillo travels on the great train routes of Europe, as he retraces the journeys featured in George Bradshaw's 1913 Continental Railway Guide.

[ edit ] Madrid to Gibraltar

Michael Portillo returns to his native Spain to discover what the intrepid tourists of the Belle Epoque experienced on their travels through the fading Spanish empire. In Madrid, he visits the scene of an assaination attempt at the royal wedding of a British princess and a Spanish king. In Cordoba, Michael dances with an unusual partner and enjoys all the fun of the feria. Heading further into Andalusia, Michael arrives in Seville, the city he has made his Spanish home. In the city's tobacco factory, he learns about a gypsy girl named Carmen. After sipping sherry in Jerez, he traces Winston Churchill's tense diplomatic mission to Algeciras on Spain's Costa del Sol and finishes with tales of British espionage on the Rock of Gibraltar.

[ edit ] Turin to Venice

Michael Portillo takes the train from the former political capital of Italy, Turin, to Casanova's capital of romance, Venice. Along the way, he recreates the famous Italian Job on an historic Fiat test track and follows fashion in Milan before investigating the early 20th century British love affair with Lake Como in a seaplane. In Verona, Michael discovers the 'House of the Capulets', bought to attract Edwardian tourists to the scene of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. He then heads over the rail bridge across the lagoon to Venice, where he finds a microcosm of pre-First World War Europe in the Venice Biennale art exhibition.

[ edit ] Dresden to Kiel

Michael Portillo explores Germany, powerhouse of today's European Union, and learns how tourists in the early 20th century would have been visiting quite a new country, which they admired and envied but also feared. Beginning in Dresden, Michael explores the city of one of his favourite opera composers, Richard Wagner. He learns about the health craze of the time and attempts the equivalent of a 1913 Jane Fonda workout. He travels to Leipzig on an historic railway line, built by British engineers in 1839. In Brunswick he learns how the arrival of the railway added its own flavour to the local beer before moving on to Hamburg, where he discovers model railway making on the grandest of scales. In Kiel, Michael learns about the intense rivalry between Kaiser Wilhelm of Germany and his uncle, British King Edward VII, at the Kiel Week yacht races. Michael boards an early 20th Century yacht to experience the thrill for himself.

[ edit ] Copenhagen to Oslo

great continental railway journeys copenhagen to oslo

Michael Portillo explores Scandinavia and discovers the royal roots of early 20th century British travellers' close dynastic ties with the kingdoms of Denmark and Norway. After braving one of the world's oldest rollercoasters in Copenhagen's famous Tivoli Gardens, Michael takes the train across the Oresund Bridge linking Denmark to Sweden, where he retraces the tracks of a train which carried a revolutionary Russian passenger on an epic voyage. In Lund, he samples a Smorgasbord before having a Highland fling in Gothenburg, where he test drives a vintage Volvo. Crossing the border again into Norway, Michael discovers how in 1913 this young nation expressed its own distinctively modern identity in plays, paintings and polar exploration.

[ edit ] Prague to Munich

With his 1913 guidebook in hand and clad in a luminous pink jacket, improbable Bohemian Michael Portillo explores the stunning art nouveau architecture of the Czech capital. In a cafe popular with artists of the time he discovers the dance craze of the day - the tango - and gamely gives it a go. In the spa of kings, Marienbad, now known as Marianske Lazne, Michael samples the sulphurous waters and wallows in peat and mud. At the Skoda factory in Pilsen he investigates how the machine products of peacetime gave way to the manufacture of armaments for war and test drives a state of the art passenger train locomotive made there today. Crossing the border from Bohemia to Bavaria, Michael encounters a fire breathing dragon in Furth-im-Wald and in Nuremberg he rides German railway history - made in Britain. Arriving in Munich, he discovers an early 20th century pioneer who laid the foundations for the city's pre-eminence in science and technology today.

[ edit ] Bordeaux to Bilbao

Following in the footsteps of early 20th century British tourists, Michael Portillo sets off with his 1913 railway guide to sample the delights of the French and Spanish Atlantic coast. Heading first to Bordeaux, he uncovers an historic British connection to the fine clarets of the region and marvels at the ingenuity of the city's trams. In Biarritz, he discovers how Britain's 'railway king' Edward VII made the region popular and how he amused himself in the fashionable resort. Across the border in San Sebastian, Michael learns how dynastic diplomacy brought Britain and Spain closer together and rides a hair-raising scenic railway. Heading into the Spanish Basque country, in Bilbao, Michael explores the industrial ties between the two nations and learns to cook a traditional Basque dish.
