FKJ 2024 Live in Hong Kong

Music can often be directly rooted to one location – murky electronics belong to London nightbus rides; smoke-filled saxophone solos evoke images of dusky New York jazz bars – but there’s a lot to be said about music with a universal appeal, a kind which refuses to be pinned down to one specific time and place. Paris-based multi-instrumentalist Vincent Fenton is a specialist in the latter. As FKJ, aka French Kiwi Juice, his loose and colourful arrangements could soundtrack anything: a house party in Hong Kong, a road trip through the Australian outback, a post-midnight walk alone across moonlit European streets. It’s all there on his 2017 self-titled debut album, which flits between fidgety electronics, smooth blues and pristine pop, all with the flick of a switch. FKJ’s universal appeal goes a long way to explaining his current, impressive border-crossing rise. With every song on his debut racking up millions Spotify plays, his shows sell out in Asia, Europe, Australia, NZ and America, and his unique, spontaneity-first live delivery – frog-leaping between guitars, keys, sax, vocals and more – is capable of translating to both intimate and giant venues. Fenton’s journey began as a teenager, where he started to compose songs in his bedroom, and later in-between working as a cinema sound engineer in France. Self-taught and self-starting, he learnt the ropes on countless instruments, before finding an early home on future-facing French collective / label Roche Musique.

FKJ Announces Extensive 2019 World Tour

This week, French multi-instrumentalist  FKJ has announced an extensive schedule of 2019 world tour dates including a lengthy run of performances in the U.S. The tour is set to begin in early February with a 7-show stretch in Europe including stops in Amsterdam, Paris, Brussels, Cologne, Berlin, Copenhagen, and Hamburg. From there, FKJ will head to the U.K., where he’ll mount a four-night, four-city run through Glasgow, Manchester, Bristol, and London.

After a break from the road throughout the month of March, FKJ will head across the pond to commence a nationwide, 22-date North American swing spanning most of April and May. After kicking off his North American run in Vancouver, BC on April 5th, the French sensation will make his way to Seattle, WA; Portland, OR; San Francisco, CA; Phoenix, AZ; Austin, TX; Dallas, TX; Houston, TX; New Orleans, LA; Atlanta, GA; Orlando, FL; Tampa, FL; Washington, D.C.; Philadelphia, PA; New York, NY; Boston, MA; Montreal, Quebec; Toronto, Ontario; Detroit, MI; Chicago, IL; and Minneapolis, MN before rounding out his tour with a performance in Denver, CO on May 21st.

FKJ–short for French Kiwi Juice–is a multi-talented one-man band whose output is consistently riveting. The Tours, France native utilizes the most potent elements of a vast spectrum of styles to craft his “expanding grooves.” FKJ is a wonder to watch. He creates all the moving parts—the smooth guitar licks, the synths, the sax, the jazz-blues bass lines—and sets them loose as hip-hop beat loops and introspective jazz tangents, juggling the mounting melodies with effortless flow. He released his first official album,  French Kiwi Juice , in 2017, and has begun to crack the insular jam audience with sets at large-scale festivals like  Suwannee Hulaween  as well as other high profile events like  Coachella  and  Lightning In A Bottle .

The 16-minute clip, shot by  Le Sofa , showcases FKJ’s recent special performance at the  Paris Modern Art Museum , staged in front of the massive mural “La Fée Electricité” by late French painter  Raoul Dufy  on the curved wall of  Pavillon de la Lumière et de l’Électricité (“Pavilion of Light and Electricity”). FKJ’s enthralling live improvisation session in front of the massive, priceless mural is a fascinating study in the harmony of sound and sight, as the audio-visual spectacle of his morphing, meandering melodies plays off the vibrant thematics of the mural to fantastic effect. FKJ, One-Man Orchestra and Internet Phenom, on His Jazz Roots (and a Concert in the Clouds)

As the French multi-instrumentalist known as FKJ boarded a plane early this year, he turned to his manager, Kate Cudbertson, and asked: “Why are we going to Bolivia, again?” The huge risk of filming a remote concert at Salar de Uyuni — the world’s largest salt flat, high in the Andes — was starting to sink in. But they both knew they might be on the verge of making something for the ages. 

Located 12,000 feet above sea level, Salar de Uyuni is one of the most visually stunning places on earth, especially in the month of February, when water covers its 4,000-square-mile surface. As the glassy top creates a perfect reflection of the sky, it imparts the optical illusion of floating in the clouds, or resting in the middle of a vast, placid ocean.

FKJ — aka French Kiwi Juice, birth name Vincent Fenton — knew this prehistoric lake would be a concert site unlike any other. Cercle, a livestream media channel known for exotic locales, had arranged the shoot after Cudbertson sent Google Map coordinates, half-jokingly; she didn’t think their production team would actually accept such an outrageous challenge.

“The Cercle guys wanted to work with Vincent for some time," Cudbertson says. “They’re huge supporters of his music and truly did make the unthinkable happen.” So the production team — 15 people, with assorted drones — braved bone-chilling conditions to film an unprecedented 90-minute performance, in one epic take. 

It’s not hard to understand why they thought he was worth the risk. FKJ had already achieved stratospheric success with his online videos; one 2017 set from Red Bull Studios Paris,  with trap-jazz artist Masego , has racked up more than 150 million views on YouTube. As a result of his growing demand, FKJ had only one day available to accomplish the shoot.

That it went as well as it did might be a small miracle, given the unpredictable weather of the Andes, and the many technical complications that could have ruined the day: a lethal combination of salt, lithium, and water getting into the production gear; a generator failing onsite; some other failing in a complex stage rig including two keyboards, two saxophones, three electric guitars, an electric bass, a half-dozen effects pedals, a mixer, and a laptop running Ableton software.

Last spring I met up with FKJ in backstage at Webster Hall in New York City, and he agreed to a rare interview. In this conversation, he opens up about the jazz that shaped him, from Monty Alexander to Thelonious Monk to Count Basie and more. To my ears, the core of what FKJ does is really rooted in the blues. (In our conversation, I called him out on one of his most formative influences, Carlos Santana.)

You might not catch these deep jazz and blues roots in FKJ’s spectacular one-man show, which resembles a DJ set with copious live instruments. A lot of looping is required to make his brand of house jazz, with all its moving parts. But Fenton prefers not be labeled as a so-called “loop artist,” but rather a musical layerer, bringing countless elements together into a landscape of sound — stunning even when it isn’t complimented by a jaw-dropping sunset, at one of the natural wonders on Planet Earth.

When purchasing wheelchair seat tickets, each wheelchair user is entitled to purchase a maximum of one minder at the same time. • Possessing and using fireworks, pyro or laser device is prohibited.
• No remote-controlled aerial device or toy is allowed (e.g. model helicopters or drones).
• Please inform any medical staff or security of AsiaWorld-Expo, if feeling unwell or any assistance is needed.
• No ticket scalping is allowed. AsiaWorld-Expo Management Limited and the event organiser reserve the right to void any ticket if it is used, resold, shared or used for any commercial purposes or association.
• Latecomers may only be admitted during a suitable break in the event.  However, admittance is not guaranteed due to lateness.
• No animals are permitted in AsiaWorld-Expo except registered guide dogs upon obtaining prior written consent of AsiaWorld-Expo Management Limited.

In support of his highly-anticipated new album  V I N C E N T , out  June 10  via Mom + Pop, French artist, producer and multi-instrumentalist  FKJ  announces his  2022 North American tour dates   – see full list below . The tour launches  Thursday, October 6th in San Francisco  and closes  Saturday, November 12th in Mexico City . Alongside the announcement, FKJ also shares today  V I N C E N T  “In The Making”  – a visual body of never-before-seen behind-the-scenes footage, giving viewers a glimpse inside the Southeastern Asian jungle where the project was birthed. 

V I N C E N T  is FKJ’s second album and signals a new dawn as an artist in his own right, continuously selling out headline tours across the globe with his acclaimed ‘one-man-band’ live shows, and having over a  billion  streams across all platforms for his music. Singles  “Greener”  featuring  Carlos Santana ,  “Way Out” , and  “A Moment of Mystery”  featuring  Toro y Moi , have all teased the project, allowing FKJ to lean into the child-like innocence of creating music purely for pleasure and has earned him early support from  The New York Times, Rolling Stone, Stereogum, Hypebeast , and more.

See Europe as the Europeans do this summer with these pro tips | Cruising Altitude

Americans are heading to Europe for vacation as much as ever these days, and that means the typical tourist spots like Venice, Paris and London are sure to be crowded this year. But, because this is Cruising Altitude, we’ll look at the aviation angle first.

First and foremost: If you’re really determined to go to Europe this summer and haven’t booked yet, stop reading now and get on it. 

“I’ve never seen a year like this … We’re at the point where there’s no more availability,” Brigitte Armand, president of Eurobound , a tour organizer that specializes in European packages, told me. “Book as quickly as possible.” 

How to get around

According to Armand, trains are generally a great way to get from place to place within Europe, but for farther-flung stops, the continent’s network of low-cost airlines offers travelers a reliable alternative.

“Don’t think of one airline as being your network and entry point within Europe,” Laura Lindsay, public relations director at online booking platform Skyscanner told me.

She said if you’re flying to Europe from the U.S., you may well rely on a large network carrier like British Airways, KLM, or Lufthansa to get across the Atlantic and then book your intra-European flights separately.

“You’re suddenly opening up Europe in a different way if you search for different airports and multiple airlines,” Lindsay said. “It’s pretty straightforward to get around, so don’t feel put off by jumping through a few different countries or trying a few different destinations.” 

Tips for European airlines

According to Lindsay, European low-cost carriers like Ryanair, Easyjet and Wizz Air often have stricter baggage policies like American ULCCs Spirit and Frontier.

“(The) top tip would be always make sure you understand the luggage allowance that is part of your ticket,” she said. “More often than not, don’t book the basic fare without checking.”

It’s also a good idea to be flexible with your airports and dates of travel if you want to get the best deals on those shorter flights.

“You’ll get a number of places that have more than one airport,” Lindsay said, noting that Skyscanner has a tool that allows travelers to search for flights to or from nearby airports when choosing a destination. “Just getting a map out and actually looking at where exactly you want to travel and where the nearby airports are.” 

Armand added that if you take the train instead, you may need to secure a reservation in advance, particularly for some of the more tourist-heavy routes like panoramic trains in Switzerland.

Where to go

If you really want to summer like a European, you should consider places a little more off the radar for most Americans.

“Albania is somewhere that broke through a couple of years ago as somewhere that people recognized as offering a huge value for money,” Lindsay said. “Sarajevo is reporting its busiest April on record for travelers.”

Armand said it can also be a good idea to try different parts of countries that are already popular if you want a more authentic, less crowded experience.

“We recently arranged a whole trip for some clients in the Abruzzo region of Italy,” she said. “The Abruzzo region, it’s on the Adriatic, people don’t know this region, and I think this is the first time ever we put together a package to get to that region.” 

Data from Skyscanner shows that some destinations in Europe are picking up in popularity with travelers on the continent. Here are some trends bubbling up year over year from 2023 to 2024:

◾ Ljubljana, Slovenia, saw a 188% increase in searches from Spanish travelers

◾ Tromso, Norway, saw a 130% increase in interest from Italian holidaymakers

◾ Dusseldorf, Germany, had a 122% spike in interest from Brits

According to Armand, the best last-minute availability seems to be in Eastern Europe, like Bulgaria and Poland.

“There are some good deals there perhaps, even the Czech Republic I’m finding some decent space,” she said.
