Lexington is the second largest city in Kentucky and arguably the most interesting and authentic city to visit in the state. Found just an hour to the west of Kentucky’s largest city, Louisville, and just half an hour away from the state capital of Frankfort, Lexington is perfectly located to make for a fantastic base from which to explore the rest of the state.

The surrounding region is rich in local culture, and aside from the large cities nearby, there are many small-town communities to explore, each with their own unique history and attractions to offer visitors.

Many of the best bourbon distilleries in the United States are located within a few miles of Lexington, including the world-famous Wild Turkey brand. Even if you aren’t much of a drinker, a tour of a whiskey factory is an interesting cultural experience which will help you to see how the drink has become so embedded in local life and history.

Further afield, there are excellent day trip opportunities from Lexington to nearby national forests, to the birthplace of Abraham Lincoln and across state borders into nearby Ohio, Indiana, West Virginia and Tennessee.

1. Louisville

Louisville is the largest city in Kentucky, and it’s located around 80 miles away from Lexington. That makes it the perfect place for a day trip, and the perfect opportunity to visit the many attractions of this bustling metropolis.

The city is built on the beautiful banks of the Ohio River and in summer you can even take a classic steamboat cruise along the water. This is a historic place and there are plenty of museums in Louisville to keep you occupied for the day.

Baseball fans can visit the Louisville Slugger Museum and Factory to see the world’s largest baseball bat, and learn more about the city’s long association with this popular American sport.

There are plenty of distilleries in the city, including the Barton 1792 brand. If you visit in May and you might be lucky enough to catch the Kentucky Derby, a world famous horse race that meets in Louisville once a year.

2. Frankfort

4. Danville

6. Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historical Park

The Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historical Park is a protected area that has preserved the birthplace of one of the most famous presidents in US history.

This historical park is on the Sinking Springs Farm, where Abraham Lincoln was born and lived until he was two years old. Here you can find an intriguing museum that brings to life what the farm would have been like when Abraham Lincoln was born.

Down the road, you can also visit Knob Creek Farm, which is also protected within the historic park grounds. This is where Abraham Lincoln moved when he was just two years old and where he spent the next few years of his childhood.

Located an hour and a half to the south of Lexington, the small community of Corbin is a pilgrimage site for anyone who enjoys a meal of Kentucky Fried Chicken.

If the weather is right, begin by enjoying the waterfront and walking across the Big Four Bridge —a decommissioned railroad bridge from 1895 that crosses the Ohio River. Natural Bridge State Park: Hike Around Sandstone Arches

Natural Bridge is a formidable sandstone arch that is 78 feet long and 65 feet high. Plus, there are other smaller arches and impressive overlooks to enjoy within the 2,300-acre nature preserve. Ten official trails (up to 7.5 miles long) wind through the most accessible part of Daniel Boone National Forest . Along with hiking, you’ll find options for family entertainment in the area including a Skylift and the first commercial via ferrata in the United States.

Getting There: Natural Bridge is an hour’s drive east of Lexington. Take Interstate 64 to Mountain Parkway then watch for signs.

Perryville Battlefield State Historic Site: Civil War History

The landscape looks pretty well the same as it did on October 8, 1862, the day of Kentucky’s largest Civil War battle. Visitors to Perryville Battlefield can follow trails (walking and driving) that pass by 40 interpretive signs denoting major events and sites in the battle. A small, informative museum houses relics.

Getting There: You can drive to Perryville along scenic Highway US-68 (Harrodsburg Road) in a little over an hour.

Travel Tip: The drive to Perryville Battlefield via US-68 passes by Shaker Village and Old Fort Harrod State Park, two more historic places to include on your day trip from Lexington.

Bernheim Forest: Trails, Flowers, and Forest Giants

Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest has over 40 miles of trails that wind through a beautiful, arboretum setting. There are plenty of places closer to Lexington for hiking , but Berheim merits a day trip for seeing the famous Forest Giants. Danish artist Thomas Dambo created the three large fantasy creatures out of recycled wood and gave them a backstory. The giants can be seen while walking a two-mile loop.

Getting There: Berheim Forest is 30 minutes south of Louisville or around 1.5 hour’s drive from Lexington.

Travel Tip: Bernheim Forest is open until 7 p.m., but the visitor center is only open until 3 p.m.

Cumberland Falls State Park: Waterfalls and Moonbows

Kentucky’s 68-foot-tall Cumberland Falls is the second largest waterfall east of the Rockies. Around 17 miles of manicured hiking trails allow visitors to view the photogenic falls from different sides and explore farther afield into Daniel Boone National Forest.

The museum is home to various collections, including jewelry, bibelots and mounted semiprecious stones designed and collected by Headley, as well as dollhouses designed by craftsmen for Whitney's daughter. It's also home to the couple's collection of fine and decorative arts from around the world. There are also workshops for children and adults who wish to develop skills like flower arranging and jewelry making. Keep in mind that the museum is not open year-round and is closed for winter. Visitors have called it a hidden gem and a truly unique experience in an area where horses and bourbon are often the main attractions.

Hunt-Morgan House

Also known as Hopemont, the Hunt-Morgan House was built in 1814 by John Wesley Hunt, the first millionaire west of the Allegheny Mountains. The home is also named for Hunt's great-grandson, Dr. Thomas Hunt Morgan, who is one of few Kentucky residents to win the Nobel Prize for his work in genetics. Visitors can admire the Federal-style architecture and craftsmanship of the home, along with period furniture that provides a glimpse into what life was like in the early 19th-century in what was then called the Athens of the West. Hopemont also provides a lecture series, where visitors can learn about things like historical mixology, the state's involvement with slavery and hemp production, historical innovations and more. Past visitors have remarked on the rich history the museum provides of the family, the Civil War and hemp production at the time.

See the world's largest ceiling clock at the Lexington Public Library

In 2001, construction began on the world's largest ceiling clock, which features a massive, five-story-tall Foucault pendulum. The history of the Foucault pendulum dates back to 1851, when it was used to demonstrate the earth's rotation without using astronomical observations. The ceiling clock at the Lexington Public Library uses a series of lit panels instead of hands to provide the current time. As you admire the clock (or simply check the time), you'll also want to study the frieze that surrounds the pendulum. It depicts the history of the horse in the Bluegrass region. The frieze, along with the clock, shows that the concept of time can be viewed in seconds, minutes and hours, or by the collection of historical events.

Jacobson Park

Jacobson Park provides opportunities for the whole family to play and enjoy the outdoors. The 216-acre park, which is located in east Lexington, is home to a reservoir, the Lakeside Golf Course, basketball and volleyball courts, a dog park, playgrounds and more. What's more, pedal boats or kayaks can be rented for those that want to spend time out on the water. There are also several fishing docks surrounding the reservoir. Both travelers and residents highlight the park as a great place to take children, potentially as a full-day excursion or as a midday break from other trip activities.

Browse at Joseph-Beth Booksellers

If you're a bookworm, Joseph-Beth Booksellers might as well feel like home. The independent bookstore is located in the Lexington Green shopping center and offers a broad range of books that you can easily spend hours perusing. The bookstore also hosts a wide variety of activities, including author signings, wine tastings, customer appreciation days, book fairs and more. Before you visit, check the Joseph-Beth Booksellers website to learn about upcoming events. Visitors have described the privately-owned bookstore as a wonderland for readers, especially on a cold or rainy day.

Tour the Lexington Brewing and Distilling Company

The Lexington Brewing and Distilling Company was founded in 1999 and provides a long list of craft beers, malt beverages, spirits and whiskeys. A tour of the brewery and distillery takes you through the brewing and distilling processes and includes four tasting tokens that you can use to sample some of the products you see. It's also the only location on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail where you can sample both beer and bourbon at the same time. After the tour is finished, you can spend some time in the beer garden relaxing with a pint. If you decide to take something home from the shop, be sure to check out some recipes on the company's website.

The Lexington Cemetery

Just north of the city's downtown area, the Lexington Cemetery isn't just a favorite haunt of visitors who enjoy spooky surroundings. The cemetery grounds are a stunning sample of natural beauty, with more than 200 species of trees, 16,000 tulips and an avenue of dogwood trees, magnolia trees, pink weeping cherry trees and more. It can be especially worthwhile to visit the cemetery during the winter or spring months to experience a winter wonderland or watch the spring flowers and trees bloom. History buffs will be pleased to hear this 19th-century cemetery is home to a variety of Civil War statues, memorials and mausoleums. The cemetery is also the final resting place of many local and national historical figures, including former Secretary of State Henry Clay.

McConnell Springs Park

McConnell Springs Park was the site of the founding and naming of the city of Lexington in 1775. The park is home to two natural springs and historical structures that are still visible. Visitors can check out old stone fences, the foundation of a creamery, the remains of a dam, a small rock quarry and more. The 26-acre park also offers 2 miles of hiking trails for those in search of a leisurely stroll.

Take in a game or concert at Rupp Arena

Rupp Arena is primarily known as the home of the University of Kentucky Wildcats men's and women's basketball teams. But the arena also hosts an array of cultural events, including concerts, bull riding competitions, comedy tours, monster truck shows and more. There are many hotels within walking distance of the arena, including the Hyatt Regency Lexington, the Hilton Lexington Downtown and the 21c Museum Hotel Lexington .

Waveland State Historic Site

The Waveland State Historic Site provides a preserved look into the history of the city, particularly the plantation era of old Lexington. The site focuses on the everyday life of the property's owner, Joseph Bryan, and his family, as well as the enslaved people who worked on the plantation. Visitors can tour the antebellum mansion, take a stroll on the grounds, admire the beauty of the flower and herb gardens, and learn about the hemp industry in the 1850s. The site also hosts events, such as Tuesday Tea and vintage baseball games.

Take a horse farm tour

There are roughly 450 horse farms throughout the region surrounding Lexington, but you generally can't visit without making prior arrangements. While some farms welcome visitors by appointment, others may require you to book a tour with a professional company. Most horse farms in Kentucky specialize in a specific breed, with some focused on racing and others on dressage, jumping, driving and other skills. If you're a big fan of equestrian sports, you may even be able to visit some of the champion horses. Plan to contact the farm in advance to make sure that the horse you want to see will be available for viewing. If you're looking for a tour of one or more farms, compare the different local touring operations to find the best fit for you, and make sure you book in advance because tours can sell out. Unique Horse Farm Tours and Thoroughbred Heritage Horse Farm Tours are both highly rated by fellow travelers.

Mary Todd Lincoln House

The first lady to the 16th president, Abraham Lincoln, was born in what's now the heart of downtown Lexington. Her childhood home has been converted to a museum that offers self-guided tours. Travelers can learn about the house's history, which included a stint as an inn before the Todd family made it their home. The property was eventually sold at a public auction, after which it was used as a grocery store, a boarding house and even a brothel. You can also learn about the life of the first lady and her family, which includes their status as slaveowners, Mary's life at the White House, and her life after the death of her husband, including her insanity trial. Keep in mind that the museum closes for the winter.

Henry Clay is one of the country's most prominent historical figures. Clay was an attorney before he entered politics, where he was the speaker of the House of Representatives, a U.S. senator and the secretary of state to John Quincy Adams. Ashland is Clay's estate, offering tours to visitors who want to explore the grounds, learn about the history of the property and the family that called it home, as well as the people who were enslaved at the estate. At its largest, the Henry Clay estate included 600 acres, but only 17 acres remain today. Note that tours may not be available during your planned visit. Check the Ashland estate website to find out what options are available during your trip.

Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill

Located roughly 25 miles southwest of Lexington, Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill was home to the third-largest Shaker community in the U.S. for a span of 105 years. Shaker Village is Kentucky's largest National Historic Landmark and boasts the largest private collection of original 19th-century buildings in the country – 34 of the original 260 structures are still standing. The 3,000-acre village features a hotel, a farm-to-table restaurant, a nature preserve, a farm, hiking trails, shops and more. You can also visit the Historic Centre to learn about the history of the village, take in the architecture and craftsmanship, and learn about the people that built and lived there.

Shop at the Summit at Fritz Farm

If you're looking for a place to shop and dine, the Summit at Fritz Farm is the place to be. The mixed-use development is home to more than 60 shops and more than 20 restaurants. All of the shops and restaurants are at street level, and dining options include a mix of well-known brands like Starbucks, Apple and Pottery Barn, as well as local and regional flavors. Some of the more highly-rated options include 33 Staves and Honeywood.

Keeneland Race Course

Keeneland is not only a world-renowned racecourse, but also an auction house. If you've never witnessed a live horse race, it can be a great place to take in the experience and maybe even put in a bet on your favorite to win. You can also attend an auction to learn about the process of buying and selling racehorses. And if you want to find out more about the history of horse racing, consider a guided or self-guided tour of the grounds. You'll enjoy an intimate view of morning workouts, visit the jockey quarters, browse the shops and more. If Keeneland is your reason for visiting Lexington, consider a hotel in the area, such as the Origin Hotel Lexington or the Eighth Pole Inn.

Woodford Reserve Distillery

The Woodford Reserve Distillery is located in Versailles, Kentucky, which sits about 20 miles west of Lexington. The Woodford Reserve brand was first introduced in 1996, but distilling first occurred on the site in 1812, making it one of the state's oldest distilleries. During the 70-minute tour, visitors will learn about the historic distillery, understand what makes Woodford Reserve unique and get the chance to taste its craft bourbon at the tour's conclusion. Those who don't have time for a tour can sign up for a 30-minute tasting, which features five different samples. Note that according to the distillery, tours are booking out three months in advance.

Tour the James E. Pepper Distillery

James E. Pepper whiskey was first produced during the American Revolution – making it the oldest brand of whiskey made in Kentucky. Though the distillery closed in 1967 when the bourbon industry fell on hard times, the brand was revived in 2008. With an hourlong distillery tour, you can learn about the history of James E. Pepper whiskey and the process of researching and collecting the original recipes and other materials needed to bring it back to life. You'll also learn about the distillery building, which was neglected for 50 years and has since been rebuilt and restored. At the end of the tour, you'll receive a sample of some of the distillery's award-winning whiskeys, as well as a complimentary tasting glass. Note, however, that hours are limited during the winter months. If you don't have time for a tour, you can enjoy tasting flights and cocktails at the distillery's bar or outside on the patio.

Bluegrass Farmers' Market

If you like to get a taste of the local foods and goods when you travel, the Bluegrass Farmers' Market – the largest, 100% homegrown market in Lexington – is an excellent place to satisfy your appetite. Plan a stop here to peruse seasonal fruits, vegetables, plants and flowers, baked goods, jams, honey, meats and cheeses, handmade soaps, woodworking pieces and more. The market is open from April to October.

Take the Lexington Mural Challenge

Lexington has more than 30 street murals. While some of the artists are known, others are anonymous. As you go about your day exploring the city, keep your eye out for some of these beautiful pieces of art. Some of the murals depict the city's long history and love of horses, but others include a tribute to Louis Armstrong, the world's largest mural of Abraham Lincoln and many more. The Lexington Mural Challenge, one of the more unique things to do in Lexington , involves snapping pictures of at least five of the murals you see around town. If you email your photos to [email protected] with the subject line "Mural Challenge," you'll get a free poster to commemorate your visit.

Arboretum, State Botanical Garden of Kentucky

Operated by the University of Kentucky, the arboretum is a must-see attraction year-round. The 100-acre public garden has three main features: the Walk Across Kentucky, the Horticultural Gardens and the Kentucky Children's Garden. In the Walk Across Kentucky area, you'll find a 2-mile paved loop that winds through a collection of native plants sourced from around the state. The Horticultural Gardens contain four gardens, each with a different theme, and the Kentucky Children's Garden is a place where children and families can learn about plants and the environment. It's free to visit the arboretum grounds, but donations are welcome. Note that the Kentucky Children's Garden closes during the winter months. Raven Run Nature Sanctuary

The Raven Run Nature Sanctuary is one of the best things to do in Lexington, especially for nature lovers. What’s more, it's free to access. The 734-acre woodland preserve boasts seven hiking trails that span more than 10 miles, along with several points of interest, including an overlook of the Kentucky River, the site of a historic grist mill, the headstone of a 19th-century inhabitant of the area, and the Prather Homestead, where the family that owned much of the preserve in the early 1800s lived. The sanctuary is also home to a native plant garden, where visitors can learn about local flora and fauna. Plus, the sanctuary offers different programs throughout the year for children and families, such as the Owl Prowl, the Salamander Search and the Woodcock Walk.

The Aviation Museum of Kentucky

Located at the Blue Grass Airport, the Aviation Museum of Kentucky offers a glimpse into aviation history. You'll be able to view various aircraft, including a Blue Angels A-4 Skyhawk and a Crosley "Moonbeam" biplane. The museum also includes artifacts and equipment, documents, interactive displays and flight simulators. The museum is also home to a library, an aircraft restoration and repair facility, and the Kentucky Aviation Hall of Fame. If you're looking for accommodations near the airport, options include the Comfort Suites Keeneland and the Fairfield Inn and Suites Lexington Keeneland Airport, among others.

The Kentucky Theatre

If you're a movie buff, the Kentucky Theatre is a must-see. The historic theater originally opened 100 years ago, in 1922. It received its first substantial renovations in the 1950s, including a new marquee and the addition of shag carpet, then was closed for five years after a fire in 1987. As of early 2022, the theater is currently closed due to the coronavirus pandemic, but plans are underway to reopen as a nonprofit organization. While the theater will screen current films, it'll also retain programs loved by the local community, such as midnight showings of "The Rocky Horror Picture Show," summer classics movie series and additional events. Keep an eye on the progress toward reopening the theater if you're interested in visiting.

Red Mile Racetrack

The iconic Red Mile Racetrack was established in 1875, making it the second-oldest harness racing track in the world. If you're interested in witnessing this variation on horse racing, check out the dates for live races on the clay track during your stay in Lexington. The racetrack also occasionally hosts events, such as a family fun day featuring pony rides, a petting zoo and more. Live racing at the track only occurs between August and early October, but during other times of the year, you can view workouts and check out simulcasted races while you enjoy a drink or meal from the on-site bar and grill.

Old Friends Thoroughbred Retirement Farms

Located 15 miles north of Lexington in Georgetown, Kentucky, Old Friends Thoroughbred Retirement Farms is a place for thoroughbred horses to live out their days after their racing and breeding careers end. The farm was established in 2003 when the founder, Michael Blowen, came across the news that a former Kentucky Derby winner had died in a slaughterhouse. Dubbed as a "living-history museum of horse racing," the farm has rescued and retired more than 200 horses. With a tour of the farm, you'll be able to meet between 10 and 15 retirees, including Silver Charm, the horse that won the 1997 Kentucky Derby. Note that children ages 9 and younger are only allowed on private tours.

West Sixth Brewing

Founded in 2012, West Sixth Brewing produces more than 30 different beers throughout the year, making it a must-visit for beer enthusiasts. Plus, it occupies a historic setting: The brewery is located in a 100-year-old building that previously served as a bread factory. You can visit the brewery taproom, peruse the on-site shop to grab some beers to go or take an hourlong tour of the facility. If you choose a tour, you'll enjoy a behind-the-scenes look at every step in the brewing process while sipping on some of the brewery's exclusive beers. In all, you'll enjoy four beer samples and a souvenir glass that you can take home.

Institute 193

Institute 193 is a modern art museum that aims to showcase the cultural landscape of the modern South. Founded in 2009, the mission of the museum is to highlight artists, musicians and writers that produce contemporary art outside of large metropolitan areas. The museum selects artists hailing from Kentucky and other southeastern states. In addition to displaying exhibits, Institute 193 also hosts musical performances, movie screenings, lectures and other events for the local community. If you're interested in visiting, check out the museum's website to view upcoming exhibits. Previous visitors have praised the museum for the overall experience and its focus on local artists.

Attend the Festival of the Bluegrass

If you're planning a summer trip to Lexington, you'll want to time your visit for the Festival of the Bluegrass, which is held the first full weekend in June. The festival, which started in 1974, takes place at the Kentucky Horse Park campground and features a variety of bluegrass musicians, including legends like Ricky Skaggs and Béla Fleck. In addition to the festival, there's also a bluegrass music camp designed for kids ages 6 to 18 that's held the week leading up to the festival. If you're a fan of bluegrass music, this event should be on your radar, according to past attendees. Before you book your trip, though, check out the festival's website. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Festival of the Bluegrass was canceled in 2020 and 2021.

9 Incredible Weekend Getaways in Kentucky

Are you looking for weekend getaways in Kentucky? Look no further! In my super detailed massive guide you’ll find trips to the best horse farms and distilleries, to the cutest antique towns with charming Inns and historical sites, to small family-owned wineries and quaint restaurants, and much, much more.

When you ask an average American (or anyone else, really) what comes to mind when they think of Kentucky, most people will tell that the first thing they envision is horse races, bourbon, cowboy hats and maybe boots. What else? Not much. Because the majority think that Kentucky is rather plain. Ouch.

But let me tell ya. In reality, Kentucky is a truly unique state with some rare world wonders.

Lately, I was reminiscing about my one long year in Kentucky  which was full of some cool weekend trips. During that time, I ventured to the narrow country roads near the border with West Virginia, chased lunar rainbow in Cumberland Falls and even explored beaches and swam in the lakes in the far Southwest of the state.

These days, while being stuck at home, I wanted to create this post. And share some of my best trips in beautiful Kentucky. Thus, I am absolutely sure that a lot of travelers will enjoy them as well.

So, if you are planning a weekend getaway to Kentucky or maybe living there now and wondering about some 2 or 3-day escapes, this list is for you.

1. a getaway to bardstown, kentucky – for the bourbon, wine & antiquity   .

Bardstown always makes it on the list of “the most beautiful small towns in America”. And there is a reason for that. This town is replete with elegant architecture, posh B&Bs, antique shops, quaint restaurants, tree-shaded streets, bourbon distilleries, and romantic treehouses .

Most travelers visit Bardstown on their Kentucky Bourbon Trail adventure. Here, you are able to immerse in all things whiskey and, if you want, dedicate the entire weekend to bourbon only. Yet, besides bourbon, there is a variety of other things to do and places to explore. 

During a year when I lived in Lexington, I have been to Bardstown a dozen times. And each time I had something new to discover. 

WHAT TO DO IN BARDSTOWN, KY 

Even if bourbon is the last thing in the world that interests you, still, it will be very fascinating to go on a distillery tour. There are 9 distilleries to choose from in Bardstown and many more around it. Each distillery offers tours and tastings and gives you a glimpse into an important piece of Kentucky history.

Visit Heavens Hill Heritage Center  or Oscar Getz Museum to learn about the history of Kentucky bourbon. At  Bardstown Bourbon Company,  take their Shaken & Stirred cocktail class where you’ll learn how to mix your drinks. And in  Lux Row Distillery to go on a tour and visit their brickhouse.

Barton 1792 , only a few minutes walk from downtown, is an old distillery working until this day and offering free tours and tastings. Willett Distillery also offers a great tour that covers the process of making bourbon – from distillation to filling the barrels. 

The Blind Pig Bourbon Market has a nice selection of bourbon, souvenirs, and gifts related to whiskey. 

If you feel you got enough bourbon, why not sample locally-made wine? Forest Edge Winery , Springhill and McIntyre’s Wineries offer an excellent selection of wines, great decor, atmosphere, and service. By the way, Forest Edge is located very close to a famous Jim Beam distillery , if you plan to cover these two places in one trip.

To soak up some history, you definitely need to visit My Old Kentucky Home State Park , famous for the historic plantation that inspired America’s first composer Stephen Foster. In summer, if visiting from June 11th to August 13th, there is a Broadway-style show on the grounds that tells the tale of Foster’s story. 

Additionally, don’t forget to pop into one of the four most important museums devoted to the Civil War . 

Among other fantastic things to do in Bardstown to keep you busy during the weekend getaway in Kentucky are:

– My Old Kentucky Dinner Train – a relaxing train ride with dinner through the Kentucky hillside;

– Self-guided walking tour through the historic downtown; 

– Old Talbott Tavern – a historic restaurant & bar which became a staple of classic Southern hospitality and decor. 

SHOULD YOU STAY IN BARDSTOWN OVERNIGHT?

Bardstown is only 1 hour away from Lexington and 45 minutes away from Louisville, so yeah, you can easily stay in one of these cities. However, for a rare opportunity to unwind in a grand old place, look into one of many charming Inns or Bed & Breakfasts.

Jailer’s Inn B&B  is another historic place with great proximity to the distilleries. The Inn used to serve a town’s jail between 1797 and 1987 and housed some of the scariest criminals in America. Today, it is a beautiful property with landscaped gardens and delicious southern dining.

2. A TRIP TO THE LAND OF LINCOLN & MAMMOTH CAVES – For History & Nature 

With this getaway idea, I am inviting you to go on a weekend trip from anywhere in Kentucky to Mammoth Caves National Park. However, before you get to the park, visit a few sites on the way that tell the story of an extraordinary man Abraham Lincoln.

WHAT TO DO ON THIS GETAWAY

From Bardstown, take a New Heaven road (or Rte. 31E) to Hodgenville. It meanders through a deep forest to the Boyhood Home of Abraham Lincoln . In this historical place, a reconstructed log cabin by Knob Creek in a grassy valley gives a great perspective of Lincoln’s childhood life.

A few miles south the drive enters the small town of Hodgenville , which carefully preserves the history of Lincoln. The Lincoln Museum has exhibits that portray Lincoln’s life. By the way, in our experience, it is a wonderful museum where you get a feel of going back in history and learning a lot.

The town of Hodgenville has a very short but nice Main Street with a bronze statue of Lincoln overlooking the town square.

South of town, a barbecue restaurant “Lincoln Jamboree” offers great live shows with talented singers and musicians. Not far from it is the Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historic Park –  a beautiful countryside park with a replica of the original log cabin where the great president has been born in 1809.

TIP : Pack lunch with you and have at the picnic area in the park.

Visiting Lincoln-related sites and stopping for lunch can take a few hours of your time. So you can leave the Mammoth Caves for the same or the following day. 

If you are interested in exploring the outback and seeing unique Australian wildlife, make a stop at the Kentucky Down Under Adventure Zoo . It is a hidden gem place with a variety of unique animals that you won’t see anywhere else (like the red kangaroo and blue-tongued skink.)

The nearby Hidden River Cave & Cave Museum is a worthwhile adventure for everyone who would like to venture into an underground cave, zip line, and rappel. Diamond Caverns Resort in Park City , adjacent to Mammoth Cave National Park, besides beautiful and quiet accommodation, is also offering tours that feature thousands of stalactites, stalagmites, and flowstone formations.

WHERE TO STAY IN MAMMOTH CAVE

3. A PEACEFUL GETAWAY TO VERSAILLES – For Horses, Farms & Country Roads

Known for some of the most picturesque countrysides and iconic centuries-old rock fences, Versailles, in the west of Lexington, is definitely one of Kentucky’s most charming towns. It is a true hidden gem that is perfect for unique girls’ weekend getaways , couples retreats, and simple 

Plan a trip here and go on a scenic drive from Lexington to Frankfort. I advise you to take an Old Frankfurt Pike Road towards Frankfort but return to Versailles to stay overnight in one of the most charming country inns. 

WHAT TO DO IN VERSAILLES 

First of all, plan to visit a horse farm. Versailles is surrounded by a rich landscape and has incredibly beautiful horse barns and properties. Many of the horse farms are homes to thoroughbreds that often win in the Kentucky Derby.

Go on a guided tour in Three Chimneys Farm or WinStar Farm . They offer custom and guided group tours on the thoroughbred industry and let you get a glimpse of the daily life of each horse.

On the scenic McCracken Pike road, from Versailles to Millville, you can visit the oldest distillery in Kentucky Woodford Reserve . It offers two specialized tours. One focuses on the architecture and history and another one solely on the bourbon-making process. Those who are visiting Kentucky from out of state and plan to be in Lexington only, have a great opportunity to learn about the bourbon production at the distillery in Versailles.

In the opposite direction on another picturesque road, is a Wildside Winery , in case you are up for wine tasting. Not far from the winery is Irish Acres Gallery of Antiques – an old converted schoolhouse full of antiques. There is a lot to look at and have a meal in a beautifully decorated restaurant downstairs.

If visiting from May to November, everyone in your family should love  Eckert’s Orchard . It reminds more of an agriculture centered amusement park with a lot of attractions. There, depending on the season, you’ll find strawberries, peaches, blackberries, over 30 varieties of apples, and lots of pumpkins.

SHOULD YOU STAY IN VERSAILLES?

Oh yes! While Lexington has a lot of options for any budget, a charming suburb Versailles with grassy fields has incredibly gorgeous farmhouses and bed & breakfasts.

Take a look at some of them: Charred Oaks Inn  or Montgomery Inn B&B . Also, The Kentucky Castle is a wonderful choice for a romantic getaway in every way.

4. a city getaway to louisville, kentucky .

The largest city in Kentucky, famous for the world-known Kentucky Derby and bourbon, has a lot to offer to couples visiting on a romantic getaway.

Being located at the intersection of the midwest and south of the country, many travelers often avoid Louisville, not knowing this city is actually really welcoming, super hipster and artsy, and great for active dates.

Even though Louisville is big, it’s also pretty compact and most attractions can be found in the Downtown area. No need to have a car since it is easy to get around on foot.

WHAT TO DO IN LOUISVILLE 

Go for a saunter in the Waterfront Park and cross to Indiana through one of many bridges. There is a bike rental by Big Four Bridge offering a range of bicycles if you feel like cycling around.

Wander through the gorgeous and historically rich part of Downtown – “Museum Row” on West Main Street. This street is home to nearly 10 attractions located next to each other and surrounded by Victorian cast-iron facades combined with striking contemporary architecture. As Louisville is built around the river, there is an opportunity for paddleboarding and canoeing. Endless Summer Paddle in Thruston Park rents out paddleboards, offers tours on the Ohio River, and sells coffee and baked goodies.

Don’t miss a walk (or bike ride) to Old Louisville where you’ll find a huge collection of historic Victorian houses where people live until this day. By the way, this neighborhood has some gorgeous Airbnbs ( like this one ) for a romantic stay. 

After spending some time in Old Louisville, why not go to the New one? New Louisville or as it is also called East Market District, or simply Nulu has cool bars, restaurants, breweries, art galleries, and quirky shops. This neighborhood is small but with the number of establishments, you can easily get lost and spend there hours.

Pop into Goodwood Brewing Co for great crafted beer and delicious food. Royals Hot Chicken is a fantastic place for a chicken meal. The nearby Quills Coffee Firehouse with Hi-Five Doughnuts are for those with a craving for cappuccino and sweets. But really, these are not the only places where to eat.

Nulu neighborhood has some of the best Louisville restaurants for lunch and dinner, coffee, and brunch. Just walk around and explore your options.

If the only city you get to visit in Kentucky will be Louisville, don’t forget to sample local bourbon. Some distilleries like Evan Williams Bourbon Experience , Rabbit Hole distillery , Angel’s Envy or  Old Forester  offer entertaining tours and tastings. Kentucky Peerless Distilling is a place for sampling some moonshine.

Louisville has so many cool accommodation options, including those for romantic stays.

5. A LONG WEEKEND GETAWAY TO COVINGTON, KENTUCKY 

Covington is the northernmost town in Kentucky that borders Cincinnati. This town is small but cozy. It is mainly known for historic neighborhoods, numerous art galleries, and popular events like Mainstrasse Oktoberfest, Mardi Gras, The Original Goetta Festival, and others. 

Escape here to listen to great jazz in Dee Felice Cafe , catch a show at the Madison Theater or a classical music concert at the Kentucky Symphony Orchestra , and   taste traditional German food in Wunderbar . And another reason to visit Covington is Cincinnati where you can get by crossing a Suspension Bridge. 

WHAT TO DO IN COVINGTON

Before we go through the list of attractions in Covington, here is one detail. Getaway to this destination will suit all types of travelers but most of all families with kids. And for many reasons.

First of all, before arriving here, if driving from Lexington (and even Louisville with a quick detour), make a stop at the Ark Encounter .  This is a unique exhibit with a replica of Noah’s Ark which was built according to the dimensions in the Bible.

It is definitely a great place to expand your knowledge about the Ark and life on it during the flood. Even if you are not religious, this project will surely impress! If visiting with family, you can literally spend an entire day here.

Once in Covington, make sure to stop by a beautiful Devou Park. It’s a nice spot for a breezy walk and a wonderful view of downtown Cincinnati. For crafted beers on tap, go to Braxton Brewing Company which welcomes everyone. Besides beer, they have food, occasional live music, tours and a rooftop bar with pretty views.  

Foodies and history lovers will definitely appreciate a  cultural food tour of a beautiful historic neighborhood MainStrasse Village.  And, kids will enjoy the Aquarium , although I personally think that Cincinnati Zoo has more to offer (and for a lower price.) 

WHERE TO STAY IN COVINGTON

Hotels in Covington are pretty pricey. Check out this super cozy budget-friendly house near the historic neighborhood !

6. A RIVERSIDE GETAWAY TO MADISON, INDIANA

This can be a cool getaway for couples from Kentucky who also would love to combine it with a road trip. Madison lies at the heart of the Ohio River Scenic Byway , so you could easily see a few other pretty towns as well. Yet, at the end of the day, return to Madison and spend a night in one of the romantic B&Bs.

If you have been to Mansfield, Ohio , then you’ll find a few similarities between these two towns.

WHAT TO DO IN MADISON 

This charming historic part of Madison is famous for three things. First – for historic houses such as Sullivan House , Lanier Mansion , and Schofield House . Second – for Main Street full of restaurants, artsy shops, chocolate and coffee places, and antique stores. And third – for the feel. 

Madison’s cozy streets with riverfront and downtown area are full of romantic charm. There is a special spirit in this town that makes you feel comfortable and relaxed from the first few minutes.

During your romantic escape, visit one of the wineries (as Thomas Family Winery , Lanthier Winery , and Vineyards Estate Winery ,) go for a walk along the Milton Madison Bridge from Madison to Milton Kentucky, get a relaxing massage  (don’t forget to schedule an appointment) and treat yourself with handmade artisan chocolates at Cocoa Safari Chocolates .

Also, head to the nearby Clifty Falls State Park for amazing hiking trails and outstanding views.

Weekend Getaways Near Louisville, KY

7. a trip from kentucky to corydon, indiana – for wine, history, music & art.

The small town of Corydon, which became the first capital of Indiana at the beginning of the 19th century, at first sight, doesn’t seem to have a lot to offer. While this is true that the town itself is somewhat unremarkable, there are still a few attractions that can keep you busy during the entire weekend.

Before you even get to Corydon, if driving from Louisville, make a stop at the Turtle Run Winery . There, you’ll find homemade wines, live music on weekends (weather permitting), and a great ambiance.

Once in Corydon, spend some time in town. There, go on a quick walk and visit Corydon Capitol State’s historic site (basically Indiana’s birthplace.) Its location is near the town square. Nearby are the Battle of Corydon park to learn how our forefathers lived and Constitution Elm – a place where the Indiana Constitution was drafted.

Among other must-visit places are glassmaking craftsmen in Zimmerman Art Glass Shop , Cave Country Canoes , and Corydon Jamboree – an amazing venue to enjoy live country and gospel music.

Also, if you have time, visit a nearby town Leavenworth which is famous for its peaceful atmosphere and mind-blowing views of the river. The Overlook Restaurant is that place where you can enjoy the food and spectacular views.

Since all of these attractions are located close to Louisville, you may want to go there on a day trip. We were visiting on a day trip from Lexington and felt like we could easily spend another day in the area.

8. COUPLE’S GETAWAY TO BRANDENBURG, KENTUCKY – For Romance & Luxury 

One of the reasons why I wanted to include Brandenburg on my list is an elegant romantic Inn that is a great vacation spot near Louisville. This small luxury-style B&B in a farming community is not only a wonderful place to stay but to unplug and have a peaceful weekend.

In fact, Brandenburg is only 25 minutes drive to Corydon mentioned in the getaway above. So if you feel like combining these two destinations on the same weekend trip, please do so. However, I still wanted to make them separate getaways because the amount of activities is endless. 

THINGS TO DO IN BRANDENBURG, KENTUCKY 

There isn’t much to do in the town but there are plenty of activities on the farm and in nearby areas. On the farm, you can go fishing, boating, swimming in one of the ponds, feeding the goats and alpacas, or hanging out at the pool all day long. 

Other things to do in the Brandenburg area are a famous Fort Knox with nearby Boundary Oak Distillery and Sounders Springs Nature Reserve . They are only a 30-minute drive away. 

To the north of town, around 15 minutes across the border to Indiana, is Squire Boone Caverns – an interesting place for both children and adults. Here, you can go on a guided tour around underground caverns, and visit a small theme park with pioneer-era buildings and hayrides. The caverns, a complex of rooms and passageways contain rimstone dams, impressive stalactites, and stalagmites.

Brandenburg as a town has a River Front park with a few walking trails and a Jailhouse which was turned into a pizza parlor (call ahead and book a jail cell for lunch or dinner) where you can dine and have a tour of the historic jailhouse (very interesting experience!)

9. A WEEKEND TRIP TO BLOOMINGTON & MONROE LAKE – For a College Town, Culture & Outdoor Adventure

Here is another weekend getaway from Kentucky to Southern Indiana which, by the way, is among the most romantic getaways in the Midwest . This time I offer you to go on a trip to an energetic college town, known for its wide selection of shops, restaurants, beautiful architecture, art, and local wines.

The main reason why Bloomington is famous is because of the historically rich Indiana University. The campus with ivy-draped halls and dormitories is simply gorgeous. It has quaint trails for walking and many areas to relax and learn about history.

For example, some fascinating historic places to visit are the IU Auditorium and Indiana University Art Museum . The first one is famous for murals on the walls and ceilings as well as various performances. And the second one boasts many works of Picasso, Rodin, Warhol, and other artists. If you happen to visit in April, the campus hosts a bicycle race called the Little 500. 

However, Indiana University is not the only reason why to visit this area.

Just north of town on State Road 37, you’ll find and oldest winery in Indiana Oliver Winery . Besides their award-winning wines, wine tastings, local artisan music, and lovely views you can also take a stroll around the lake. It is a lovely area to enjoy time with friends and family outdoors on their convenient seating.

Southeast of Bloomington lies Monroe Lake . This large reservoir has lake cabin rentals and many popular spots for swimming, camping, and boating. Hardin Ridge and Paynetown  recreation areas are the most popular for those who would like to get closer to nature.

OTHER PLACES TO VISIT IN BLOOMINGTON AREA:

If you come not for a day but for a weekend getaway, you’ll have more time to explore other places in the Bloomington area. And there are quite a few of them. You can even go on a road trip through Southern Indiana.

So, before leaving Bloomington, make a stop at the Tibetan Mongolian Buddhist Cultural Center. It’s a peaceful educational place excellent for meditation and achieving a calm state of mind.

Afterward, follow a scenic State Road 46 toward Nashville . Dipping through the hills and hollows of rural Brown County, it opens up beautiful views.

Nashville  is a small town full of antique shops, craft stores, and art galleries. Stop at the Big Woods the Original  and taste their famous beer cheese pretzels, chicken asparagus sandwich, and burgers. Besides those, they also have very good soups of the day, pizza, fried rice, and more dishes on the menu. 

Brown County Playhouse and Melchior Marionette Theater (located next to each other) are nice small community places for concerts, shows, and performances. 

If visiting this area in June, expect to see the Bill Monroe Memorial Bean Blossom Bluegrass Festival. It is the oldest festival in the world dedicated to Monroe’s bluegrass songs.

Besides Nashville, visit T.C. Steele State Historic Site , Brown County State Park , Yellowwood State Forest , and ghost town Story .

WHERE TO STAY IN BLOOMINGTON & NEARBY:

Depending on the goal of your trip, I personally would love to recommend a few different places.

Fourwinds Lakeside Inn – a gorgeous property with fantastic views of Monroe Lake, a convenient location, and an excellent marina atmosphere. Suits families with children and couples.

Grant Street Inn – a quaint and classy Inn within walking distance of downtown, a farmers market, and many restaurants. This is a privately owned hotel, therefore you can expect to have a very unique experience.

Wampler House Boutique B&B  – this is a romantic extravagant Inn in the heart of Bloomington downtown. Everything feels just right here and you’ll surely have an unforgettable stay!

For adventure seekers, I highly advise checking a country bed-and-breakfast Story Inn . It is a bit pricey but very unique and quaint! The Inn offers fine dining, lodging, and events throughout the year. If you can’t stay overnight, at least pay a visit during the day, have a meal, and walk around the area. It is surrounded by beautiful countryside.

It was meant to only house 550 patients when it opened; the Athens Lunatic Asylum surpassed nearly 2,000 patients by the 1950s. Later, small housing units were built to create small communities for patients to live in.

A great day trip from Cincinnati is Lexington, KY. Lexington is home to plenty of fascinating history. With several of the historic homes and places, visitors to the area can go on a self-guided walk through downtown Lexington to scout out these historic landmarks.

Visitors to this Guinness Book of World Records Holding attraction can add a layer to the ever-growing ball. The attraction is free to the public; however, you must call ahead and schedule a time.

The World’s Largest Ball of Paint is at the Carmicheal home and is open by appointment only. A quick google search will yield the current phone number to contact to set up your tour.

Go Swimming at an Old Quarry in La Grange, KY

Another great day trip within two hours from Cincinnati is La Grange, KY.  Adults can cool off at Falling Rock Park .  It is an old rock quarry that is maintained solely through rainwater! Anyone over 18 can bring a pool raft, noodle, kayak, or paddleboard and relax.

While you are visiting, be sure to visit Mainstreet La Grange, one of the few places in the country where the train runs right down the middle of the road.

Hartman Rock Garden

Venture off the beaten path with a visit to the Hartman Rock Garden a spectacular collection of art made by self-taught artist Ben Hartman. One man’s legacy has become a unique Ohio roadside attraction drawing thousands of visitors annually. The garden is free to visit and is open year-round.

Wright-Patterson Air Force Base

Catch The View From Rising Park

Soak in breathtaking views of Lancaster, Ohio, by climbing to the top of Rising Park’s Mount Pleasant. Arguably one of Ohio’s most spectacular views, Mount Pleasant overlooks the city of Lancaster with the surrounding foothills in the distance.

To get to the top of Mount Pleasant, visitors enter through Rising Park. A parking lot is adjacent to the trailhead, directly past the tennis courts. The climb is moderate; however, remember that you will gain 206ft in elevation in about .7 miles. It took us roughly 45 minutes round trip, but you can stay up and enjoy the view for hours.

Lexington is widely considered the Horse Capital of the World.

As the second-largest city in Kentucky, Lexington offers some of the best equine destinations in the world.

But the fun doesn’t start and end with just horse-themed attractions.

A mix of historical, artistic, and natural locations make for an interesting holiday with lots to choose from.

To help you out in those decisions, we’ve compiled a travel guide for the city.

1. Mary Todd Lincoln House

The Mary Todd Lincoln house is situated right in the center of West Main Street in downtown Lexington.

Made from enchanting Georgian brick, it was built from 1803 to 1806 and used as a tavern and inn.

It wasn’t until 1932 that Mary Todd’s father purchased the building for his family’s use.

Now, the Mary Todd Lincoln House is a historical site, preserved to commemorate this gem of American history.

It is the first historical location that was restored for the sake of a first lady and comes complete with artifacts that truly submerge you in history.

Its rooms retain much of its original photographs and furnishings of its period and its exterior shows off a lovely set of gardens perfect for strolling through.

Mary Todd Lincoln was America’s 16th First Lady, the wife of the late President Abraham Lincoln.

This home where she grew up was visited by her frequently over the years.

It boasts 14 rooms and you can embark on a one-hour tour through them while learning of the life and times of this influential figure.

It goes without saying that the Mary Todd Lincoln House is one of the best spots that Lexington has to offer, and if you’re looking for places to go in the city, make sure you don’t miss it.

2. Keeneland

Given the fact that Kentucky is known for its horses, it’s little surprise that one of the tourist attractions that you can find in downtown Lexington is related to this elegant animal.

Keeneland is a professional racing course for horses that is publicly open throughout the year.

Keeneland was founded in 1936 and is as famous as it is historic.

If you take a tour, you’ll get to visit the indoor facility area, check out the racecourse, and even get a look into the sales complex.

Naturally, attending race day is one of the most fun things to do in Lexington.

But while races are one of the main reasons you’d want to take a trip to Keeneland, its many other events and its iconic value mean there’s something you can enjoy here no matter when you visit.

Among the many things that pepper the Keeneland calendar are huge thoroughbred auctions – some of the largest in the United States! – and events dedicated to honoring racing culture and history.

You can check out the Keeneland Kids Club if you have children aged 12 and below, visit the shop to buy horse-themed gifts, browse thoroughbred historical archives, or simply walk through the immaculate grounds!

3. Kentucky Horse Park

Kentucky Horse Park is among the top 10 points of interest that you can go to in Lexington, especially if you’re a fan of anything and everything equine.

It’s a fully operational horse farm that is also designed to raise awareness for equine history and culture.

It’s not just one simple park, either – it’s full of different portions that provide fun and varied experiences!

The horse park is home to the Smithsonian International Museum of the Horse, which tells the tales of horse-rearing and its history the way horses have been used in society, and how horse breeds have evolved over the years.

It houses great artifacts like the Calumet Trophy Collection and lists amazing racehorses across time in the Hall of Champions.

On the grounds, there is also the grave of one of the most iconic thoroughbreds – Mon o’ War, with a large and rather opulent statue over it.

The rest of the park has demonstrations of old-timey professions like wagoners, blacksmiths, and harness makers.

Horse shows are also held in the park, with all sorts of breeds ranging from typical workhorses and rarer varieties, and you can even take a ride on a carriage pulled by a horse!

4. Raven Run Nature Sanctuary

Raven Run Nature Sanctuary sits peacefully on a southern fringe of the city of Lexington, spanning 734 acres of lush greenery.

A mix of woodland, forestry, and streams wind through the delightful spot, with 10 miles of hiking trails that make for a fantastic sightseeing adventure.

The sanctuary is designed to preserve the wild green of the Kentucky River Palisades, providing a wonderful open space to roam while showcasing the importance and historical value of the patches of land it inhabits.

You might find some remnants left behind from settlers of the 19th century or stumble upon the bird blind where you can observe and learn about the nature of the Bluegrass wilderness.

Other things you can do in the Raven Run Nature Sanctuary include the Joe Pulliam Memorial Garden, which is a stop for monarch butterflies in their migration.

You can also enroll your children in special programs or take part in weekly yoga sessions or organized runs if you’re interested!

Be sure to pop into the visitor’s center at the Raven Run Nature Sanctuary when you first arrive.

You’ll learn more about the sanctuary, the more than 600 species of plants and animals that inhabit it, and the history of the establishment itself.

It’s peaceful, educational, and among the best things to do in Lexington!

5. Aviation Museum of Kentucky

Taking a trip to the Aviation Museum of Kentucky and perusing its many exhibits is a surefire must do in Lexington.

With 20,000 square feet of space dedicated to the wonderful history of flight, the museum is one of America’s most delightful places to visit for aviation enthusiasts.

The museum hosts all sorts of aircraft exhibits, from the likes of Vietnam War-famous Bell Cobra copters to the undeniably cool F-4 Phantoms.

A combination of different aircraft gives you a great glimpse into a mix of classic, old, and modern aviation.

The exhibit arena is as comprehensive as it is expensive, with displays of both replica and authentic variety.

Military, civilian, and commercial aircraft are displayed, and you can learn more about them and the history of aviation in the museum library.

There is also the Kentucky Aviation Hall of Fame that lists all sorts of great figureheads of the state in this industry.

It’s not just permanent exhibits at the Aviation Museum, either.

Traveling exhibitions bring photograph collections, artifacts, models, and more!

All year round, you can also head over to the restoration and repair shop on museum grounds that teach visitors about the repair and maintenance of old aircraft.

If you’re here in the summer with kids from the ages of 10 and 18, you can even enroll them in a camp!

6. Kentucky Theatre

The Kentucky Theatre , located in the downtown area of Lexington, has been around for almost a century!

It’s been a staple of city-wide entertainment, dating all the way back to “talkies” and showcasing iconic performances such as The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

The theatre is now used as a modern-day cinema.

Though it’s not nearly as luxurious as the economy changes in the place surrounding it if you’re looking for things to see, why not pop into the old theater to catch a blockbuster or indie film this weekend?

7. Hunt-Morgan House

The Hunt-Morgan House was originally built for John Wesley Hunt, who was the very first millionaire to live to the Alleghenies Mountain Range’s west.

The townhouse was constructed in the year 1814 and called Hopemont at first.

It’s a great way to get a taste of old Lexington and it’s among the best cool things to do in the city.

But where, then, did the house’s name come from?

Well, it originates from one of the many notable people who stayed in the home.

In this case, it was Dr. Thomas Hunt Morgan, the first state resident to win a Nobel Prize.

The Hunt-Morgan House doesn’t particularly feature this illustrious man’s life and times alone, but it has been preserved by a local trust and restored so it can be open to the public.

Within this home, you’ll view three stories perfectly curated to feature period furnishings and decor.

Some genuine artifacts belonging to the home’s prior residents are on display and a Civil War museum lives on site – possibly due to the fact that a Confederate general once lived here, too.

You can also have fun admiring the cantilever staircase, the portraits, and porcelain, or wandering through the walled courtyard and garden.

8. Waveland State Historic Site

The Waveland State Historic Site is a picturesque preserve of old Lexington and the plantation era of the United States.

Walls of red brick and Doric columns may be old, but they’re well-preserved and give you a good idea of how grand this part of Lexington once was.

Most buildings here date back to the 19th century when landowners lived opulent lives.

The antebellum mansion is the biggest example of this, with an extremely luxurious main building contracted by three less extravagant outbuildings – one lived in by slaves.

Green grounds, with more slave quarters, an ice house, and a smokehouse, also still stand here now.

The Waveland State Historic Site offers daily tours that will tell you about the lives of the families that lived here and the slaves as their beck and call.

Period furnishings, decorations, and artifacts make for curious things to observe on your way through the main mansion and the buildings near it.

Special events like Derby Day Breakfasts, baseball games, costumed exhibits, and Tea Tuesdays add to the special attraction of the site.

As far as Lexington attractions go, it’s very much worth the trip for historical significance!

9. University of Kentucky

The University of Kentucky began its life as the Agricultural and Mechanical College, opened by John Bowman in 1865.

Its current name was only gained in 1916.

But how can a university be one of Lexington’s top spots?

Well, it’s home to the University of Kentucky Art Museum, which has a permanent collection that regularly changes exhibits, featuring many forms of art including photographs, sculptures, prints, paintings, and many more.

In fact, the art museum is thought to house the finest collection of art in Lexington.

The mix of subversive, classic, and contemporary works here makes it fascinating to peruse.

Workshops and touring shows are also held once in a while, and permanent collection entry is completely free.

Some other interesting spots on the university grounds are the Buell Armory, the Rupp Arena, and a bookstore.

The Rupp Arena is especially interesting since it is the home of the state basketball team, the Kentucky Wildcats!

10. Arboretum

The Arboretum is well-known as one of the must-see spots in Lexington all year round.

Owned by the University of Kentucky, this space spans 100 acres and first opened its doors in 1991.

Themed gardens provide a conservation space for fauna and a fun educational opportunity for you.

All sorts of activities are held throughout the year, rotating with the seasons, most of which are perfect for the whole family to enjoy!

11. McConnell Springs

McConnell Springs is a beautiful rush of wilderness and thick greenery that decorates the fringes of Lexington along the north.

It is named after William McConnell, a frontiersman who used this area for his and his compadres’ camp in 1775.

The group arrived here at the beginning of the American Revolution and named the beginning of this settlement after a Massachusetts town, also called Lexington.

This is what led to the founding of the city we know now!

In terms of stuff to do, McConnell Springs boasts historical significance that provides an air of importance to this serene location.

Remnants of a dam, farm buildings, stone fences, and even a creamery can also be found scattered throughout the vicinity.

Ash trees, brooks, two miles of hiking trails, and springs all make McConnell Springs an awesome place to head to when you want to take in some sights for sore eyes.

12. Lexington Cemetery

Lexington Cemetery is the final resting place of over 60,000 people and has existed for over 150 years.

Just north of the city’s downtown area, it’s the best place for tourists who like spooky or melancholy places.

Sure, a trip to a cemetery isn’t exactly something you may consider among the fun things to do in Lexington, but the cemetery’s history and its grounds make it worth a visit.

Among the most interesting features in this cemetery are resting places for Kentucky VIPs and Icons like golfer Gay Brewer, city founder and frontiersman Levi Todd, basketball coach Adolph Rupp, and Ernest P. Worrell actor Jim Varney.

There is also an effigy here that is on the National Register of Historic Places: a Confederate Soldier Monument.

The grounds are carefully kept with tulip blooms, crab-apple trees, and magnolias.

Some special water features also add to the somber but sweet atmosphere that the cemetery has as a whole.

Enjoy a little stroll here as you respectfully look at the graves or even go on a walking tour that takes you through the metal plate graves across the 170 acres of the grounds.

13. Red Mile Harness Track

The Red Mile Harness Track is just one more of many horse-centric things in Lexington, Kentucky.

So if you love all things equine, taking a trip to this one-mile long, oval-shaped Lexington track is something to add to your list of what to do.

The Red Mile Harness Track is actually one of the world’s oldest harness racetracks – the second-oldest, in fact.

Live races are held in the months of July, August, and September, but workouts are held every single day all the way from dawn to late morning.

14. Old Friends Thoroughbred Retirement Farms

Lexington really is chock-full of horse-themed tourist attractions.

The Old Friends Thoroughbred Retirement Farms is just another one of them, and it still holds up as one of the top things to do in Lexington!

This is where retired thoroughbreds go to live out the rest of their days in peace and enjoyment.

The Old Friends Thoroughbred Retirement Farms was opened by Michael Blowen, a former critic for the Boston Globe, as a nonprofit organization in 2003.

Blowen was moved to open the farm after finding out that a Kentucky Derby-winning horse wound up in a Japanese slaughterhouse.

Unfortunately, this is still a common fate for many winning horses once they are too old to race.

Over 150 different racehorses, now retired, live in three different locations attached to Blowens organization, including the Old Friends Thoroughbred Retirement Farms – and many of them were iconic in their time!

You need to reserve a spot in advance here for visits and guided walks, with each walk coming with some carrot snacks to feed the horses!

15. Headley-Whitney Museum

The Headley-Whitney Museum was created in 1968 by Lexington, Kentucky locals Barbara Whitney and George Headley.

Once more reminding you of the brewing industry of Kentucky is another great Lexington brewhouse: West Sixth Brewing .

It is a rather hipster-like and remarkably cool distillery that serves up great drinks and style.

Who says you need to go out at night for some exciting drinks?

West Sixth IPA is definitely the main attraction of West Sixth Brewing – as its name suggests!

The quad-hop ingredients used make it quite an interesting Kentucky staple.

Still, you’ll get to check out the distillery’s taproom – brimming with industrial-chic design – and many homemade booze offerings.

Basically, if you’re looking for what to see and are a fan of alcohol and good drinks, this is a great place to head to.

Another interesting West Sixth Brewing feature is the Pay It Forward Forter, with cocoa undertones.

There is also a bubbly beer called DankeChain that is meant to be reminiscent of Oktoberfest.

As a community brewery, the establishment also offers events that cater to locals regularly.

Open for public viewing from Wednesdays to Saturdays in the mornings and afternoons, Institute 193 boasts exhibitions from artists in their early- or mid-careers.

Typically, exhibits focus on the cultural landscape of the south.

Every once in a while, you’ll be able to catch extra events like film screens, musical performances, and art lectures.

Some distilleries you’ll see along the way are The Old Pogue, Corsair, Wilderness Trail Distillery, and Willett Distillery.

It’s a fairly intimate sort of festival with just one stage, some workshops for music and banjo, and a good lineup of bluegrass acts from both American and other countries.

21. Thoroughbred Park

For equine enthusiasts, something to add to your bucket list of sites in Lexington, Kentucky is Thoroughbred Park.

The park spans 2.75 acres and has a very interesting role in preserving history in Lexington: it’s dedicated to thoroughbred horses and their history!

Across the park, 13 statues of horses stand, often depicted grazing or racing, and children are allowed to touch, climb, and stroke them each in turn.

There are also 42 plaques across the park that honor important people in the history of the thoroughbred industry, including President George Washington and Queen Elizabeth II.

This rebuilding added Greek Revivalist style and opulence with touches of European influence.

This dish is a sliced brisket sandwich, with the beef tender and stacked, charred just enough around the edges, and carefully balanced with pickles and onions.

Other southern staples are served at Blue Door Smokehouse, and you can always order their chocolate fudge brownies for a sweet dessert treat.

If you’re in the area this weekend, it’s almost a crime not to drip in.

Do note that the diner is only open at night on Fridays and Saturdays and on all other days, it closes at 3 pm.

27. The Monroe Moosnick Medical and Science Museum

Monroe Moosnick Medical and Science Museum

The Monroe Moosnick Medical and Science Museum is one of the most unique things to do in Lexington.

This makes it one of the best for those who want something slightly more unorthodox and fun for their trip.

It’s open only by appointment, so arrange your trip in advance!

The museum is named after a late chemistry professor from Transylvania University who worked at the institution for an impressive fifty years.

It’s packed with medical instruments and paraphernalia that date back to the 1700s and 1800s.

Though they look extremely out-of-this-world and resemble something from science fiction now, they were the peak of modern medical technology back in their time.

A lot of the instruments are accompanied by features designed to teach you some basic concepts of physics, chemistry, and biology.

These features include botanical diagrams and anatomical models.

A lot of these were purchased between the years 1820 and 1850 in places like Paris and London, then brought to Transylvania University for the medical students.

One of the most interesting pieces at this museum is a life-sized wax figure called Medical Venus, which is a dissectible female figure made by casting 200 cadavers for tissue and organ models.

Another interesting piece is a hairball from a buffalo’s stomach that spans 14 inches.

The kicker?

The hairball was given to Transylvania University by Mary Todd Lincoln’s youngest brother, George Rogers Clark Todd.

28. The World’s Largest Ceiling Clock

It’s likely that you had no idea that the world’s largest ceiling clock lives in Lexington, specifically in the Central Public Library of Lexington.

Though it’s unusual, it’s a definite must-see.

The clock is essentially a huge work of art that sits in the atrium of the building.

It was donated by a Lexington philanthropist.

It features a five-story Foucault pendulum, complete with a frieze that showcases figures of horse history and even eight jockeys, all Lexington locals.

Despite its obscurity, this ceiling clock is still considered among quintessential Lexington attractions thanks to its cool and unusual structure, artistic value, and fun interpretive meaning.

One Weekend In Lexington: A 3-day Lexington, KY Itinerary

Lexington is famous for being the horse capital of the world and is the second biggest city in Kentucky. While Kentucky isn’t everyone’s first choice for a vacation, Lexington is a fun destination full of history, art, and natural attractions. The 3-day guide will show you how to spend your time and have an amazing and unforgettable weekend in Lexington.

How do I get to Lexington?

To get to Lexington, visitors have the option of driving themselves or flying to the closest airport. Lexington Airport (LEX) is the closest and most convenient airport to land being only 7 miles from the city.

Visitors also have the option to fly into Louisville (SDF) or Cincinnati-Covington (CVG), however only do this if you are renting a car , and be prepared for a drive as these airports are close to 75 miles away from Lexington. 

What is the best time to visit Lexington?

Kentucky is a state that offers residents and visitors all four seasons, depending on the time of year. The best weather conditions and an ideal time to visit is during late Spring and early Fall. Temperatures are ideal, with sunny skies. June hosts the Bluegrass Festival every year which is a fantastic event in Lexington, while the Fall season kicks off college sports with the University of Kentucky being Lexington’s home college.

Where should I stay in Lexington?

Lexington is a rather small city, and most landmarks and attractions are located in the downtown area. It is a very walkable city with a variety of hotels and guesthouses for every type of budget. Most hotels themselves will also be located in the downtown region, some favorites and top-rated ones being The Marriott, Holiday Inn, Hyatt Regency , and Glo Best Western . 

There are a few hotels outside of the city, or more rural guest houses the further you go. Staying outside of the city may save you some money on accommodation, but there is little public transportation outside of downtown. So unless you have a vehicle, downtown areas are recommended. 

Sample 3-Day Lexington Weekend Itinerary

Day 1 in lexington:.

To commence the weekend in Lexington, start at Keeneland Race Track. Since Lexington is known for horses, it’s a good place to begin your weekend of exploring. It is a professional and public racing track for horses. Enjoy the atmosphere while watching a real Lexington race day. There are also tours of the facilities available for the real equine lovers.   

Throughout the afternoon, explore all of the old historical houses and sights within the city. Be sure to check out the Henry Clay Estate , Mary Todd Lincoln House , the Hunt Morgan House , and Waveland State Historic Site . There are also various restaurants located throughout the city within walking distance to grab a bite for lunch.

For your first night in Lexington, the best place to eat by far is the Blue Door Smokehouse . Get a real taste of southern cooking and real American barbeque. Try to make a reservation ahead of time if possible, seats fill quickly as dinner is only served Friday and Saturday nights. 

Day 2 in Lexington:

Begin your day with a nature hike at Raven Run Nature Sanctuary. Located in the south of Lexington, its purpose is to preserve the natural greenery of Kentucky and the River Palisades . There are over 10 miles of trails for visitors to enjoy, as well as yoga classes and a visitors center to learn about the history and previous settlers in the area. 

After a bite to eat and a rest from the morning adventure, head downtown to visit the Monroe Moosnick Medical Science Museum. This is one of the most unique things to do in the city, maybe even the state. The Museum features medical equipment and instruments from the 1700s. Diagrams and models are there to help guide you and teach visitors the background.

L ooking for a more adventurous activity for your afternoon? Try a guided zipline tour and check out the Boone Creek Gorge (from above) during this canopy tour. Complete with 6 ziplines, a rappel, and other obstacles.

A trip to Lexington isn’t complete without an evening spent at the Kentucky Theatre . This landmark has been around for over a century and is by far one of the biggest highlights in town. It is now used as a modern-day cinema, showing old blockbuster movies and the occasional indie film as well. 

Day 3 in Lexington:

The Kentucky Bourbon trail is something that could easily last the entire weekend in itself. The whole state is famous for its bourbon, so a visit isn’t complete without a small taste. There are various stops within the city to fill a morning, and give you a quick preview. If you are interested in completing the entire trail, you’ll definitely have to plan a longer trip to Kentucky!

After a morning of drinking, head over to Thoroughbred Park . The Thoroughbred Park is one of the best things in town for horse lovers, and other tourists as well. The park is dedicated to thoroughbred horses and their history in Lexington, and a great afternoon spent admiring all the statues, plaques, and scenery. 

To end your weekend in Lexington, start the evening with the Old Kentucky Chocolates Tour . Some of the best chocolate in the country comes from this factory, and the tour allows visitors to observe the creation process. Don’t forget to taste test and buy some take-home candy from the gift shop. End your evening with dinner (from the food truck) and drinks at West Sixth Brewery . If you are a fan of craft beer and homemade booze, there is no better place to end your trip.

• Kentucky Horse Park: If you are a fan of equines then this spot in Lexington can’t be missed. Home to the Smithsonian International Museum of Horses, the park offers visitors a way to immerse themselves in history and equine culture. If you are here during the right time, you may even catch a horse show. 
• Aviation Museum of Kentucky : The Aviation Museum is an ideal way to spend the afternoon learning all about the history of flight. The museum is home to dozens of different aircraft carriers with a mixture of modern and classic exhibitions.
• McConnell Springs : This natural beauty is the first area of land to be designated as ‘Lexington.’ There are old remains dating back to revolutionary times, hiking trails, and springs for one to immerse themselves in and see some amazing sights. 
• Institute 193 : Institute 193 is a modern art gallery that showcases cultural art pieces reflecting the city of Lexington. It is one of the only places in this area of Kentucky that actually has showcases and landmarks dedicated to the history and representation of the state.

Hundreds of thousands of Kentuckians expected to travel for Memorial Day

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - Memorial Day weekend is just around the corner.

Whether you plan to stay home or take a trip, you could be joined by thousands of other Kentuckians leaving the Bluegrass State.

Blue Grass Airport is expecting significant foot traffic this year.

“This Memorial Day weekend, we anticipate to see about a 15-20% increase in passengers. We’ve seen the addition of a couple new routes over the last 12 months,” said Lauren Simmerman, community relations at Blue Grass Airport.

Some of those include non-stop trips to Las Vegas and daily trips to Denver.

Simmerman says to beat the rush at the airport and plan accordingly.

“Give yourself that nice 90 minute cushion, pack your patience, if you can download your airline’s mobile app just to stay in touch with what’s going on with your flight,” said Simmerman.

From the skies to the roads, that rush doesn’t seem to be letting up.

“AAA is actually expecting over 500,000 Kentuckians to travel. That’s about 11 percent of our total population,” shared Lori Weaver Hawkins, AAA of the Bluegrass.

86 percent of that number will be traveling via car, and with that many extra people headed out of town before letting the rubber hit the road, Weaver Hawkins gives us a few things to keep in mind.

“Make sure your vehicle is well maintained before you head out, then you are going to need to be patient. You’re probably going to hit some traffic congestion. Be sure that you don’t become distracted. Those are things you really need to keep top of mind,” said Weaver Hawkins.

Donald Trump visits Cincinnati Wednesday for a fundraiser with JD Vance

Donald Trump was in Cincinnati on Wednesday for a fundraiser .

UPDATE 2:45 p.m. The weathered tombstones and white brick chapel of Armstrong Chapel Methodist Cemetery in Indian Hill provided a gathering spot for a couple dozen people hoping to catch a glimpse of Trump’s motorcade.

The chapel is a half-mile from the mansion where the fundraiser took place.

They left disappointed as Trump took another route about a block away.

Several wouldn’t talk to the press or didn’t want to talk about their opinion of Trump. Suzanne Muller, an Indian Hill resident, said she found out on Tuesday Trump was coming and decided to get as close as she could. She wouldn’t say whether she’s voting for Trump.

Muller said she likes Trump's tough stance on immigration. The security at the Mexican border was the top issue for the Trump supporters in Indian Hill who talked to The Enquirer.

“I want illegal aliens to not infiltrate our society and be on our tax rolls, that we have to pay for all those people coming into our system,” said Elizabeth Bieser of Indian Hill.  She lives a few blocks from where the fundraiser happened.

She said she’s voted for Trump but said she’s undecided this year because she wants to see how his legal issues are resolved.

“I just don’t want Biden again,” Bieser said. “He’s inefficient and doesn’t get things done.”

UPDATE 2:15 p.m. Not everyone was thrilled about Trump's visit.

UPDATE 1:40 p.m. Trump has landed at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport and is en route to the Cincinnati suburb of Indian Hill for a fundraiser.

UPDATE 12:55 p.m. Greater Cincinnati Republicans say Ohio Sen. J.D. Vance would make a "strategic and compelling choice" to be Trump's vice president.

In a statement about Trump's visit, the Hamilton County Republican Party praised Vance's background as a bestselling author, a venture capitalist and a U.S. Marine.

"His strong support for the former President's policies and his ability to articulate the frustrations of many Americans who feel left behind by the political establishment make him a strong advocate and ally," the group said in a statement.

UPDATE 12:45 p.m. Local Democrats issued a statement noting that Trump and Vance only show up in Hamilton County "to collect checks from their multi-millionaire donors." (Vance actually lives in Hamilton County, in Cincinnati's East Walnut Hills neighborhood.)

“While Republicans are charging donors $50,000 a plate to pay off Donald Trump’s legal bills, Democrats in Hamilton County are focusing on re-electing good public servants on all levels of government," said Hamilton County Democratic Chairwoman Gwen McFarlin. “From attending his trials to singing Trump’s praises on cable news, it’s clear that JD Vance is only working for Trump. Democrats are working for all of the people in Hamilton County – not just those who can afford to spend a year’s salary on a lunch.”

UPDATE 12:40 p.m. Peggy Gardner Johns, the great-granddaughter of Cintas founder Richard "Doc" Farmer, will host Trump and Vance at her Indian Hill estate this afternoon. According to this story from reporters Scott Wartman and Sharon Coolidge , Johns isn't well known in political circles, but she's donated to both candidates in the past.

One interesting tidbit from the story -  in 2005, she and her husband hosted Prince Edward, the Earl of Wessex, at the same home for a private reception. 

UPDATE 12:30 p.m.: John Capannari, 60, of Hyde Park, came out to a honk and wave near the airport because he’s a big supporter of Trump’s “since the first he won, the second time he won and hopefully the third time.”

He carried a Trump 2024 “Take America Back” flag. “It’s good to show your support and let him know the average, everyday person supports him and disagrees with what’s happening in the court system.”

UPDATE 11:45 a.m.: Trump was expected to land at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport around lunchtime before heading to a fundraiser in Indian Hill, a wealthy Cincinnati suburb.

The invitation obtained by the USA TODAY Network Ohio Bureau describes it as a "lunch discussion" with Ohio Sen. J. D. Vance as a special guest. Attendees must contribute $50,000 each or $100,000 per couple, which will go toward the Trump 47 Committee, which is a joint fundraising committee  that includes Trump's campaign, the Republican National Committee and several state GOP groups including Ohio's.

After the lunch, Trump was expected to head to Lexington for a fundraising dinner.

Trump made the trip on an off day in the hush money trial where Trump faces 34 counts of  falsifying business records to hide reimbursement payments to former Trump lawyer Michael Cohen for the money paid to adult film actress Stormy Daniels.
