A small, totally uninhabited island about half a mile west of Bonaire's mainland (you can see it in the distance from downtown Kralendijk ), Klein Bonaire is an unblemished oasis protected from development as part of the Bonaire National Marine Park . Klein means “small,” and this little satellite sister island is only accessible by water taxi. Though it boasts Bonaire’s absolute best expanse of blindingly white soft sand called No Name Beach, it offers no refreshment stands, changing areas or beach umbrellas, so you will need to pack your own water, food, reef-safe sunscreen, towels and any other supplies. But a visit to Klein Bonaire is not really about sunbathing – travelers are drawn to the island for its snorkeling and swimming opportunities. Klein Bonaire is ringed by a vibrant reef just offshore that’s a playground for sea turtles, rays and often dolphins, too.

No trip to Bonaire is complete without taking a trip along the south coast to experience some of the island’s most surreal signature sights. Locally referred to as the “ Rondje Zuid ,” meaning the “South Round,” this sightseeing route begins downtown and heads south along the coast past Donkey Beach and Bachelor’s Beach to the famous salt mountains, which are flanked by pink salt pan lakes now run by Cargill. Also of note on this route is the Willemstoren Lighthouse. Built in 1837, it still operates today, though it has been modernized to run on solar power. Beside it sits the ruins of the original lightkeeper’s house; the scene makes for excellent photographs by the sea.

As one of only four designated flamingo breeding grounds in the world, southern Bonaire's Pekelmeer Flamingo Sanctuary is a sight to behold – but you'll need binoculars. To protect Bonaire's national bird, tourists are not actually allowed inside of the reserve. Luckily, these bright pink locals can be viewed from the road above the sanctuary and nearby Pink Beach. Upward of 10,000 Caribbean flamingos can be seen every year during breeding season from January to July, so you'll get the best views during these months. Once the breeding season is over, some birds remain, while others migrate to Venezuela to feed for the remainder of the year.

Lac Bay/Sorobon Beach Lac Bay/Sorobon Beach

Though diving is Bonaire's main allure, those seeking a quintessential Caribbean experience won't be disappointed by Lac Bay’s Sorobon Beach. With its stunning views, warm shallow aqua waters and brilliant white sand, sun-seekers will find ample amenities there like lounge chairs, beach bars and restaurants. But the real draw to this end of the island is the world-class conditions for windsurfing. Situated on the eastern side of the island, Lac Bay's steady trade winds and limited boat traffic provide idyllic conditions for both novice and seasoned windsurfers (the farther you venture out in the bay, the more challenging the conditions become).

There are numerous on-site windsurfing centers where you can rent gear or sign up for lessons,  but there are few places where you can learn the sport from former world champions! Frans Paradise is one of them. Run by Bonaire’s most famous windsurfing legends, Tonky and Taty Frans — brothers who put the island on the world sports map with their decades of freestyling feats – this is the spot to take lessons.

Hikers can choose between three routes. The Lagadishi Walking Trail, which begins at the park's visitor center, is an easy two-hour walk that provides a complete snapshot of Bonaire's native flora and fauna. The 45-minute Kasikunda Climbing Trail – which also begins at the park's visitor center – is a steep trek up a volcanic hill, but the views of north Bonaire are worth the effort, according to travelers. Lastly, for a hike that offers unparalleled views of neighboring Curaçao – and on clear days, the Santa Ana Hill on Venezuela's Paraguaná Peninsula – take the Subí Brandaris Trail, considered the most challenging hike in the park. Note that this hike does not start at the visitor center.

Best things to do in Bonaire

If you enjoy laid-back days, tropical weather and beautiful beaches, then Bonaire is the place for you! Here are the best things to do in Bonaire.

Best things to do in Bonaire

Bonaire may be the least recognizable name in the island group to which it belongs (the Dutch Caribbean ABC Islands), but like its neighbors Aruba and Curaçao, Bonaire is a stunning tropical paradise with plenty of activities to fill up a memorable vacation! Bonaire lies about 50 miles off the coast of Venezuela and is a special municipality of the Netherlands.

One of the best parts of planning a vacation to the Dutch Caribbean is the fact that these islands lie outside of what is known as “Hurricane Alley.” Another big plus? The incredible reefs have turned Bonaire into a snorkeling and scuba diving mecca.

But you need not be a scuba aficionado to enjoy your time in Bonaire − there are plenty of other fun ways to pass the time on this beautiful Caribbean island . Read on to discover Bonaire favorites, with a list of some of the best things to do on your next Bonaire vacation.

Snorkeler and sailboat

  • Eden Beach : Snorkeling is popular at Eden Beach (and its namesake resort), thanks to the colorful coral reef and marine life. Visitors to Bonaire Island love Eden Beach’s white sand and palm trees, and this is the perfect spot to unwind in the sun after a day of diving.

12 Can’t Miss Things to Do on Your Next Trip to Bonaire

The lesser-known b of the abc islands offers plenty of reasons for a trip..

  • Copy Link copied

Bonaire may be small but it offers a mighty selection of things to see and do.

Photo by Stephan van de Schootbrugge/Unsplash

“Untouched” is often a word you’ll hear used to describe Bonaire —and it’s well deserved. While tourists often flock to its neighboring islands of Aruba and Curaçao, the easternmost island of the “ABC” trio is also the least developed. That’s made possible by a series of governmental initiatives to keep out large chain hotels and preserve natural sanctuaries like the island of Klein Bonaire, which is part of the Bonaire National Marine Park and serves as a turtle nesting ground.

Rich in marine life, the reef-lined island is a scuba and snorkeling paradise, offering nearly 100 dive sites to choose from and over 50 coral species brimming with life. The cuisine, architecture, and music of Bonaire are reflective of its residents’ diverse backgrounds, producing a medley of Spanish, African, Dutch, and Portuguese influence around the 112-square mile island. Bonaire’s capital seafront city of Kralendijk is the pastel-colored home to open air markets, museums, and mural filled walls.

Read on for some of the best things to do on the Dutch Caribbean island of Bonaire.

1. Watch for wildlife at the Marine Park, Donkey Sanctuary, or Salt Water Flats

Bonaire has a population of less than 25,000, and there are ample opportunities to immerse yourself in its natural surroundings and wildlife, from the protected Marine Park , to desert landscapes and salt water flats that are home to its pink national bird, the flamingo. View one of the island’s most social residents at two local sanctuaries, including Donkey Sanctuary Bonaire .

2. Go on a Bird Photography Tour

Avid bird-watchers can book a personalized tour with Bonaire Bird Photography Tours , including an in-depth experience to spot the lora—a yellow-shouldered Amazon parrot—out in the wild. The island’s colorful underwater world includes three globally endangered species—the green turtle, queen conch, and mangrove trees—all found on the protected inlet of Lac Bay in the southeast. “Here on Bonaire, we live close to nature and in harmony with it. All you have to do is sit quietly, open your eyes, and look around you. There’s a plethora of animal life surrounding you: birds, fish, lizards, colorful butterflies. They are all patiently waiting for you to notice them,” says Susan Davis of Bonaire Bird Photography Tours .

3. Explore colorful downtown Kralendijk

The colorful, traffic light–free capital of Bonaire is bustling with bars and restaurants and is home to events such as the Taste of Bonaire and annual Grand Karnaval Parade . Take a self-guided Street Art & Street Food Tour by car or scooter from Bee Caribe , or discover popular street art sites throughout town, including a flamingo made out of recycled marine waste by Dutch artist Maria Koijck and local schoolchildren.

There’s also the Bonaire Arts and Crafts Cruise Market , which features island-made products like coconut earrings and scented bath salts. Grab a juicy burger at chef Thamara van der Vlugt’s Cactus Blue Food Truck or try Brass Boer , an oceanfront bistro serving fresh dishes like roasted watermelon with yuzu, and grilled snapper with artichoke, celery, and smoked bacon.

4. Learn to windsurf or landsail at Jibe City

Bonaire’s signature trade winds and calm warm waters make windsurfing a popular pastime. Head to Sorobon Beach and sign up for a lesson at Jibe City , then grab a drink at an island favorite, Hang Out Beach Bar. “Some of the world’s best windsurfers are from Bonaire and they are passionate about sharing their knowledge and experience with others, ” says Donna Hudgeon of Bonaire Landsailing Adventures , whose blokarts are capable of sailing up to three times the wind velocity at two inches off the ground, propelled only by the wind. “Landsailing is an up and coming sport and Bonaire hosts the largest purpose-built blokart landsailing track on Earth, located right on the edge of the Caribbean Sea. And don’t forget kiteboarding! Get down to Atlantis Beach for your first session. Bonaire has excellent instructors and ideal conditions,” Hudgeon adds.

5. Go snorkeling through coral reefs with Epic Tours

Some of the best things to do in Bonaire are on the water. Set sail with a number of tours around the island, including a catamaran ride and snorkeling through sparkling coral reefs with Epic Tours . At Karel’s Beach bar, water taxis are available to go to sandy havens like Klein and Coco Beach. Pack a picnic and snorkel gear for the ride.

6. Sail at sunset with Melisa Sailing

For a highly curated on sea experience, Melisa Sailing offers a luxury wooden sailboat ride excursion with a six-course chef’s tasting menu and unobstructed sunset views.

7. Taste the global and local cuisine

Bonaire’s growing gastronomic scene earned it the title of a Culinary Capital in 2022 by the the World Food Travel Association (WFTA), which chooses destinations based on five criteria: culture, strategy, promotion, community, and sustainability. From food trucks to chef’s tables, you’ll taste Bonaire’s global flavors of recipes from Italy, Japan, and the Caribbean.

Try to get a highly coveted reservation at the 16-seat Chefs , or savor local dishes of slow-cooked goat stew at Posada Para Mira or lionfish burger from Cactus Blue Bonaire .

Another signature dish on the island is guiambo , a soup made of okra and seafood that is reminiscent of a bowl of New Orleans gumbo.

8. Go rum tasting at Cadushy Distillery

For a different kind of spirits experience, Cadushy Distillery offers tastings of liquor distilled from cactus and award-winning rum. They’re open for tours Monday through Saturday from 10 am until 5 pm.

9. See the flamingos at Cargill solar salt facility or Pekelmeer Flamingo Sanctuary

Salt pyramids, naturally drawn from the sea and dehydrated by the sun, are present all around the southeastern end of Bonaire. Cargill solar salt facility is based among the pastel colored salt dunes, and the area is full of flamingos that consume food that the saline ponds produce. You can view the birds at Pekelmeer Flamingo Sanctuary , one of only four areas in the world where flamingos breed.

10. Learn about history in Rincon and Cabaje

Also important to note is the role slavery played to create these island’s famous salt flats and economic advancement as a major importer to the world. Under Dutch rule, enslaved Africans were forced to harvest salt, dye, wood, and other items under brutal conditions. The remnants of this history can be viewed in Rincon and Cabaje, where huts that enslaved people slept and worked in still stand.

11. Kayak through Mangroves

At the Mangrove Info Center , visitors can paddle a kayak through the clear, shallow waters of Lac Bay.

12. Tour the island’s caves with Cave Tour Bonaire

Other natural wonders on Bonaire include over 300 caves that can be seen with Cave Tour Bonaire .

13. Go to Seru Largu for great views on the island

Lookout point Seru Largu, which means “large hill” offers a panoramic view of Kralendijk and the little island of Klein Bonaire. Drive up here at sunset for some particularly stunning views.

Bonaire Travel Tips & Information You Need to Know

Megan walking through the colorful streets of Kralendijk Bonaire

Before we dive into all the best things to do in Bonaire, we want to you to be set up for success for your trip! Every visitor to Bonaire needs to pay a tourism tax.  You will need to do this before arriving, although if you forget you can do it upon arrival, but it will slow things down.

All international visitors will need to pay the tax online before visiting . It’s a pretty quick and straightforward process, I did it 24 hours before departing Curacao for Bonaire and was able to get the QR code almost immediately. When you get off the plane, you will need to present your QR code for scanning to show you already paid your tourism tax.

Have this loaded and ready on your phone so that it’s available offline. I took a screenshot of our proof to have it ready.

The Bonaire Visitor Tax is $98.00 per person and includes the $75.00 Bonaire government tourism tax.

Cruise ship passengers will have a $10 tax that will be collected by the cruise line. If you’re arriving by cruise, be sure to double-check that this process is taken care of before arriving.

You’ll want to  rent a car to get around to the best things to do in Bonaire! If you’re a cruise ship passenger, you may want to join a tour or shore excursion since your time is limited (don’t worry we recommend a few of those in this guide).

There are really not any great options for public transportation, unfortunately. If you’re planning to visit Washington Slagbaai National Park during your trip too you’ll need to rent a high-clearance vehicle or something with 4×4 as you’ll need that to drive through the unpaved roads in the park.

As mentioned, Bonaire is a part of the ABC islands and is home to the shore diving capital of the world ! So you can bet there is some incredible snorkeling and diving to be done at pretty much all the best beaches in Bonaire! There are over 85 shore diving and snorkel sites marked with a painted yellow rock with the dive site name on it.

In addition,  all of the ocean surrounding Bonaire and Klein Bonaire is protected and a part of the Bonaire National Marine Park , the first of its kind in the world founded in 1979.

You’ll need to  pay a Nature Fee to access BNMP-protected areas  as well as visit Washington Slagbaai National Park, which is good for an entire calendar year. We paid ours when we went to the national park, but you can  pay for your Bonaire nature fee online . Whichever way you pay for this, be sure to keep your proof of purchase so you don’t have to pay the fee again elsewhere.

You’ll want to  bring your own snorkel ! Trust us, you’re going to want to snorkel while you’re visiting as you won’t want to pass up seeing all the vibrant coral reefs life like swimming with sea turtles and all the colorful tropical fish there are here. If you’re shore diving, you probably can skip the snorkel gear, but it’s still handy to have!

The beaches you’ll visit while doing some Bonaire sightseeing don’t really have facilities, so you won’t have opportunities to rent snorkel gear. It’s so easy to   buy a snorkel set for everyone  in your family. We both  bought this snorkel set which included a mask, snorkel, ear plugs, flippers, and carrying bags which were perfect for beach hopping. (we both pack carry-on only and were able to easily fit it in our bag too!)

It’s also necessary to  have a  pair of water shoes too to wear under your flippers! Some beaches have fossilized coral, a rock shelf, or other things that are a bit harder to step on to get in and out of the water and since this island is more rugged, you’ll need to carefully choose your entry and exit points when snorkeling as you’ll have to watch out for critters like urchins. These also fit in the snorkel set bag we bought!

You’ll want to  pack sun protection when visiting and exploring Bonaire!

Get  reef-safe sunscreen  to protect the local environment too, during our week-long trip we went through a few bottles and were able to easily find more at grocery stores. But, you’ll definitely want to pack a bottle and be ready to apply it every 60-70 minutes. We were being cautious and still got a little sunburn on days when we spent more time at the beach.

A few of our favorite reef-safe sunscreen products include:

  • Kokua Sunscreen  – water-resistant zinc sunscreen that applies smoothly without white residue
  • Sun Bum Mineral Sunscreen  – the Mineral line (white bottle with brown text that says ‘mineral’) is a clear, fast absorbing zinc-based sunscreen that’s great for sensitive skin and is sweat and water-resistant.
  • Thinksport Mineral Sunscreen  – We have been using this brand for years and love how easily it applies and is water resistant. They are also a bit more affordable.
  • Supergoop! Unseen Sunscreen  – this sunscreen is not only reef-safe but it’s also super hydrating, this one is a little pricier so we recommend using this on the face and neck area since it falls under more of a skincare product as well.

Don’t forget  something to take underwater photos ! For those who are looking for something on a budget, you can get a  waterproof pouch for your smartphone to take underwater photos . Just be careful to keep this sealed correctly so no water gets in. This does do the trick but can be a bit tricky to play with to get focus.

Or  bring a waterproof camera  like the classic  waterproof GoPro action camera  or the  waterproof Insta360 camera  which are both great for snorkeling and don’t require the waterproof housing if you’re not diving into deeper water!

Bring your own towel!  We also pack our own beach towel on trips with us too, not the bulky traditional beach towel you’re thinking of though.

We both always  use a sarong  or  Turkish towel  because they are lightweight, dry quickly, easy to pack, and do the job!

What to do in Bonaire

  • Washington Slagbaai National Park

view-of-Boka-Slagbaai-and-the-old-port-house-inside-Washington-Slagbaai-National-Park-in-Bonaire

One of the best things to do in Bonaire is explore Washington Slagbaai National Park. This is a protected area covering nearly 14,000 acres of land on the northern side of the island. In fact, Washington Slagbaai National Park takes up roughly 20% of the entire island!

You’ll want to check out our guide for everything you need to know about visiting Washington Slagbaai National Park , as visiting does require a little planning, but it’s nothing to be intimidated by and totally worth it!

The park boasts a variety of landscapes, including beaches, rocky shores, mangrove forests, cactus fields, and rugged hills. The park also includes important historic sites, like the remains of slave huts and a former plantation house at Boka Slagbaai.

It’s also a great spot to catch a glimpse of local wildlife, like flamingos, iguanas, parakeets, wild donkeys, and more. The beaches in Washington Park are also major nesting areas for 4 different species of sea turtles. Head to one of the many great snorkeling and scuba diving spots in the park to catch a glimpse of them!

Washington Slagbaai National Park also has hiking trails. The Lagadishi Walking Trail is the easiest. It’s a scenic 2-mile walk along a flat path that winds along the shore’s ever-changing landscape. And the Subi Brandaris Trail is a moderately difficult trail that takes about 45 minutes. You’ll hike to the top of Mount Brandaris, the highest point on Bonaire, for amazing views of the island!

If going on your own seems intimidating, you can join a tour of Washington Park instead!  This full-day tour of Washington Slagbaai National Park  includes transportation, lunch, hiking, snorkeling, and a tour of the Boka Slagbaai historical site.

Getting Around Washington Slagbaai National Park

driving on the road in Washington-Slagbaai National Park in Bonaire

There’s one main entrance into the park, where you’ll pay a $40 entrance fee, but if you’ve already paid your nature fee you will need to present this so you can enter at a discounted rate. You can visit every day but Monday from 8:30 AM to 5 PM (the last entry is at 2:30 PM). You’ll need a high-clearance vehicle to get around the park (many of the roads are dirt roads). So, when you rent a car, make sure you get the right kind!

Once you’re in the park, you can take the long route or the short route. The long route takes you along the coastline. If you’re interested in Bonaire sightseeing, this is the way to go. It’s a 2.5 hours drive and takes you along a lot of the best beaches, the cactus fields, the old lighthouse, and more.

Or you can take the shorter route through the middle of the park, which takes at least 1.5 miles to drive. And this is the route to take if you plan to hike the Subi Brandaris Trail.

As mentioned, check out our full guide for everything you need to know and plan before visiting Washington Slagbaai National Park , we cover it all plus the best stops to check out.

  • Bonaire National Marine Park

Queen-Angelfish-and-schools-of-fish-seen-snorkeling-at-Bonaire-Salt-Pier

Bonaire National Marine Park is a protected marine area that includes all of the seas around Bonaire and Klein Bonaire. So, technically, you’re visiting anytime you’re in the water!

The park covers over 6,700 acres of coral reef, seagrass beds, and mangrove forests. It’s also home to over 350 species of fish and 57 species of coral, and its crystal-clear waters offer excellent visibility for exploring.

It’s no surprise that the marine park is one of the most popular Bonaire attractions, with some of the best diving and snorkeling in the world. You can go kayaking or canoeing through the island’s mangrove forests. And many come to Bonaire for underwater photography opportunities. The island has companies that offer photography excursions and gear rental.

And one of the most unique features of the park is its “reef balls.” These are artificial structures designed to mimic natural coral reefs and provide a habitat for marine life. They’re a great way that  STINAPA , the organization that cares for the marine park, is handling marine conservation in Bonaire.

  • Visit the Donkey Sanctuary

Megan with some donkeys at the Donkey Sanctuary in Bonaire

Bonaire has a large population of wild donkeys, which is surprising to see if you don’t know about this in advance as you’ll likely spot them driving around the island.

The animals were brought to the island by the Spanish in the 17th century to be used for transportation and labor. As modern transportation methods were introduced, the donkeys were left to roam free.

By the early 20th century, the donkey population on Bonaire was well in the thousands! As the island developed, they became a nuisance and it wasn’t a safe environment for them.

Over the years, there have been efforts to control their population, but none were successful until T he Donkey Sanctuary was established in 1993.

Not only does the non-profit organization care for sick and injured donkeys, but they also run sterilization and adoption programs. The sanctuary also has a passion to educate visitors about the donkeys’ history, as well as Bonaire’s conservation efforts.

You can visit the Donkey Sanctuary that’s located on the southern side of Bonaire. It covers nearly 15 acres and is home to almost 800 donkeys. You just pay a small entry fee, which goes towards helping the donkeys of the island, and you can stop at the gift shop to purchase feed to give the donkeys.

Most of your visit is a self-guided safari drive around a 150-acre enclosure where donkeys roam free. They’ll come right up to your car and stick their head in your window so you can pet them! It’s one of the most memorable things to do in Bonaire and it’s so much fun to interact with these sweet animals.

After your drive, you’ll go into another “special care” area where you’ll get up close with the animals who need more care, like babies and elderly donkeys! You can also participate in volunteer activities, including grooming and feeding the donkeys.

  • Go Scuba Diving

healthy-coral-reef-at-Bari-Reef-in-Bonaire

If you’re looking for what to do in Bonaire, scuba diving is a must since you’re at the shore diving capital of the world! There’s no place like Bonaire’s National Marine Park, offering over 60 official diving sites which you’ll spot as you’re doing Bonaire sightseeing as they are marked by yellow painted rocks with the name of the site.

This includes sites accessible from shore and several boat-accessible sites. And there are opportunities for divers of all levels.

The island’s clear waters provide excellent visibility for divers, with visibility often exceeding 100 feet. Bonaire’s coral reefs are home to over 350 species of fish and almost 60 species of coral. You’ll also find a variety of other sea creatures, such as sea turtles, rays, and octopuses.

You can join boat tours and go scuba diving at the remotest parts of the marine park or bring your own gear to a dive site and jump in!

And if eco-tourism is important to you, show your support by visiting Bonaire. The island developed an innovative plan for marine conservation that has helped to preserve this part of the island’s natural beauty.

  • Go Snorkeling!

Bonaire-snorkeling-at-Klein-Bonaire

If you’re not into scuba diving (I am not certified), snorkeling is a great alternative. Many of the same sites are perfect for snorkelers too, making this another one of the best things to do in Bonaire.

You can still experience the island’s abundant marine life and stunning underwater scenery, without the need for specialized equipment or training. You just need to know how to swim!

We have a whole guide to the best spots for snorkeling in Bonaire . A great spot for snorkeling is Bachelor’s Beach, a small beach on the southeastern coast of Bonaire. It has shallow reefs, tons of colorful fish, and more.

One of our favorite spots was 1000 Steps. You descend a flight of stairs built into the cliffside down to the beach below, not to mention the drive here is also stunning.

We also loved Karpata, another popular snorkeling beach on Bonaire. This site is known for its beautiful coral formations and underwater statues! Plus, the snorkeling area at Karpata is relatively shallow, making it a great spot for beginners.

See Flamingos!

spotting wild flamingos around Bonaire in the Caribbean

One of the most iconic Bonaire attractions is all the flamingos! Bonaire’s natural environment, conservation efforts, and plentiful food sources have made it a haven for flamingos. The island is home to the Caribbean flamingo, also known as the American flamingo, the largest and most vibrant of the flamingo species.

One of the best places to see flamingos in Bonaire is at Goto Lake , a large, shallow lagoon located in the center of the island. You can also see them at the salt pans, which are located on the southern end of the island. These shallow pools of water are used to harvest salt, and they provide a perfect habitat for flamingos. They use their long beaks to sift through the brine and extract food.

Lac Bay is another popular spot to see flamingos, especially during the winter months when large flocks of the birds gather there. The bay is a shallow, protected lagoon, and it’s an important breeding ground for many species of birds, including flamingos.

And of course, the Pekelmeer Flamingo Sanctuary is a must-visit spot for anyone interested in seeing flamingos in Bonaire. This protected area is located on the southern end of the island. It’s home to thousands of flamingos who use the area as a breeding ground and feeding habitat.

  • Take a Trip to Klein Bonaire

aerial-view-of-No-Name-Beach-at-Klein-Bonaire-in-Bonaire

Klein Bonaire is a small uninhabited island located half a mile off the coast of Bonaire. The island is home to some of the best snorkeling and diving spots in the Caribbean, as well as beautiful white-sand beaches.

One of the top things to do in Bonaire is take a trip to Klein Bonaire. There’s a water taxi departing every 25 minutes from both Karel’s Beach Bar and Eden’s Beach Resort.

You can find great Bonaire sightseeing tours to the island that include activities like snorkeling, diving, and exploring nature trails.

Since the island is uninhabited, you’ll want to bring your own gear and explore the island on your own. Keep in mind there are no facilities on the island. So, remember to bring everything you’ll need for your time here including water and snacks (and take everything with you when you leave, including your trash).

Some of the top things to do on Klein Bonaire include snorkeling or diving at No Name Beach. This area is known for its stunning coral formations and colorful fish. Another popular spot is Bari Reef, which is home to a wide variety of marine life, including sea turtles and eagle rays!

  • Try Wind Surfing

windsurfers at Lac Bay in Bonaire from Jibe City at Sorobon Beach

Bonaire Island is known for its consistent trade winds, making it an ideal destination for windsurfing. The island’s warm waters and pristine beaches offer ideal conditions, and windsurfers come here from all over the world!

The best spot for windsurfing on Bonaire is Lac Bay’s Sorobon Beach, on the east coast. Lac Bay is a shallow, turquoise lagoon with flat water that’s perfect for freestyle and slalom riding. The water depth varies from knee-deep to waist-deep, so it’s a safe environment for beginners but also works for the more advanced maneuvers of experienced riders.

There are a few places to watch windsurfers on Sorobon Beach. We watched most of the windsurfers at the popular Jibe City windsurfing center and beach bar. They offer equipment rentals and lessons. But even if you’re not able to windsurfer, they’re just a chill place to hang out! The center also hosts events and competitions throughout the year, making it a hub for the windsurfing community on Bonaire.

  • Kite Surfing

Atlantis Beach aka Kiteboarding Bonaire pink sand beach in Bonaire

Bonaire offers some of the best conditions for kite surfing in the Caribbean, making the thrilling sport one of the most popular things to do in Bonaire. The place to be for kite surfing is Atlantis Beach, AKA Kite Beach. It’s located on the south coast of the island, near the salt pans.

Kite Beach has a long stretch of shallow, turquoise water that’s perfect for beginners. There are also more challenging areas with waves and choppy waters for advanced riders. Scattered along the beach, you’ll find several kite surfing centers that offer a variety of services, including gear rentals.

Land Sailing

land-sailing-on-Bonaire

Land Sailing is another popular activity on Bonaire that takes advantage of the island’s windy conditions (as well as Bonaire’s flat, open terrain). If you’ve never tried this fun sport, a trip to Bonaire is the perfect opportunity!

One of the best places for land sailing on Bonaire is on the southern end of the island, near Bonaire’s capital, Kralendijk. The whole area has wide, open spaces and plenty of wind, providing ideal conditions for land sailing.

The land sailing center at Kite Beach is a popular place to rent equipment and take lessons. And another great spot is Sorobon Beach on Lac Bay. Here, the shallow lagoon provides a stunning backdrop for land sailing and perfect winds.

You could also go on a  land sailing small group tour with the experts ! They provide all the gear you’ll need, they know the best land sailing locale, and they provide snacks and drinks. All you have to do is show up! After they properly fit you with gear, you’ll have an hour on the track. No experience is necessary.

  • Visit the Colorful City of Kralendijk

colorful Dutch style buildings in Kralendijk Bonaire

Visiting the city of Kralendijk is one of the most memorable things to do in Bonaire. The city is located on the west coast of the island and is the largest city of Bonaire. It offers a unique blend of Dutch and Caribbean culture, beautiful architecture, and stunning waterfront views.

For the best Bonaire sightseeing, head to the historic downtown area. This is where you’ll find colorful Dutch colonial buildings, painted in bright colors like blue, green, pink, and yellow. You can have a fabulous time simply wandering through the streets, taking in the vibrant colors and unique architectural details found throughout the city. And there are some great local shops and eateries, especially along Kaya Grandi.

You can also visit the Terramar Museum to learn about Bonaire’s history and culture or stroll along the beautiful waterfront promenade. If you’re interested in a boat tour, a lot of them leave from here.

  • Explore and Relax at Lac Bay

conch shells and the sandy shores at Lac Cai Beach at Lac Bay in Bonaire

Whether you want to try adventure sports, enjoy nature, or relax on a beach, you’ll find some of the best things to do in Bonaire around Lac Bay. This stunning coastal area on the east coast of Bonaire has turquoise waters, white sand beaches, and a variety of activities to choose from.

Lac Cai Beach was one of our favorite beaches in Bonaire to hang out at. It’s quiet and has calm waters and beautiful views. There are Queen conch shells everywhere and it’s a pink sand beach! And if you get hungry, there’s a seafood bar near the beach.

Sorobon Beach on Lac Bay is on the opposite side of the bay and is where you’ll find the windsurfing as well as more nice white sandy beach to hang out at. Plus, there are a few great beach bars here where you can watch or join in on windsurfing. We loved sitting on the beach beds at Jibe City (they don’t charge you to use their beach beds, which we were used to after visiting all the great beaches in Curacao before coming here) and watching the windsurfers while having a drink!

Lac Bay is also home to a large population of flamingos, and you’ll often see them wading in the water looking for food around the bay. There are also mangroves at Lac Bay you can visit and kayak around.

The good snorkeling is over by Sorobon Beach, past the windsurfers there are healthy coral reefs and a huge variety of marine life, including vibrant tropical fish, jellyfish, sea turtles, and more!

Visit Rincon – The Oldest Village of Bonaire

view of Rincon the oldest village in Bonaire

Rincon is a small historic town located in the northern part of the island. Bonaire’s oldest settlement, Rincon offers a glimpse into the island’s cultural heritage. We highly recommend exploring the town on foot. You can soak up the laid-back atmosphere and interact with friendly locals.

One of our favorite things to do in Bonaire in Rincon was visit the Cadushy Distillery , where the island’s signature cactus liqueur is produced. Cadushy is the name of the cactus you see all over the island!

You can take a tour of the distillery, learn about the production process, and sample delicious local liqueurs.

Cadushy Distillery in Rincon Bonaire

And have lunch at Kos Bon So , a little BBQ stand that serves traditional Bonairean dishes. It’s one of the few options around, and it’s fantastic.

The town is also known for its annual festivals such as the Dia di Rincon . If you’re visiting Bonaire around April 30, you can experience this exciting celebration of Bonairean culture with music, food, and more.

Rincon is also known for its cultural and historical sites. There’s the Mangazina di Rei , a restored 19th-century plantation house. Inside, the island’s history and cultural heritage are showcased through exhibits and artifacts.

And in the heart of Rincon is the San Ludovico Beltran Catholic Church . The gorgeous yellow structure is a beautiful example of traditional Caribbean architecture. It dates back to 1827, making it the second oldest building on the island!

  • See the Salt Pyramids of Bonaire

ariel view of where the ocean meets Bonaire and the pink lakes of the salt pans

The salt pyramids of Bonaire are a remarkable sight and visiting them is one of the unique things to do in Bonaire. These massive, white pyramids are located in the southern part of the island at the salt pans.

The salt pans have been used for salt production since the 17th century, and the pyramids are formed from the harvested salt. The Dutch West India Company established the salt pans and slaves were brought from Africa to work in them. The salt industry played a significant role in shaping the island’s economy and cultural heritage.

Salt production provided employment opportunities and contributed to the island’s prosperity. It also influenced the development of Bonaire’s architecture – buildings were constructed using coral blocks and salt-resistant materials.

aerial view of the salt pyramids and pink salt pans of Bonaire

Today, the salt industry in Bonaire continues to operate, but on a smaller scale. The salt pans are managed by the Bonaire Salt Company, and the salt is exported globally.

We stopped to look at the pyramids from the nearby beaches and by driving by. The pyramids create a striking visual against the turquoise ocean beyond. They also offer a glimpse into the ecological importance of the area. The salt pans are home to different species of birds, including the iconic flamingos.

  • Visit the Historic Slave Huts and Obelisks

slave-huts-and-obelisk-in-Bonaire

The slave huts on Bonaire Island are historically significant structures that offer a glimpse into the island’s dark past of slavery.

Today there are 3 sites where you can find these humble stone huts. One is located near the salt pans on the southern side of the island, and the second is further south, almost at the southernmost tip of the island. The 3rd site is at Boka Slagbaai inside the Washington Slagbaai National Park.

The slave huts were once used as shelter for enslaved people who labored in the salt industry during the 1800s. These huts are small and showcase the harsh living conditions endured by the enslaved population. They serve as a powerful reminder of the inhumane treatment and labor exploitation that took place during that era.

At the Old Slave Hut site near the salt pans, you’ll notice a white obelisk. There’s an orange one at the second site, called Red Slave, as well as a blue obelisk right at Salt Pier. At the height of the salt production on Bonaire, these obelisks told cargo ships where to dock.

Passing through the bay of Kralendijk, there would be either a red, blue, or white flag flying. This would tell ships which location to go to! Today, the obelisks work as a monument to the enslaved people who suffered and labored here.

We always advocate for mindful tourism, in which every story is honored. Today these sites are tourist attractions, but that can be for good. The site reminds you of the painful history of slavery in Bonaire and pays tribute to those who suffered. It’s also an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the island’s past and the lasting impact it has on the present.

  • Willemstoren Lighthouse

Megan standing in front of Willemstoren Lighthouse in Bonaire

The Willemstoren Lighthouse is located on the southern coast. Built in 1837, it’s the oldest working lighthouse on the island and has become an iconic symbol of Bonaire. It was originally constructed to guide ships safely along the coast, helping them avoid the reefs that surround the island.

Today, you can visit the exterior of the Williemstoren Lighthouse on a scenic drive around the southern tip of Bonaire en route to other Bonaire attractions! It’s on a quiet strip of the coastline, just off the road.

Nearby there are the ruins of an abandoned lightkeeper house, and you might see wild donkeys and flamingos around here as well.

You can explore the area surrounding the Willemstoren Lighthouse, but you can’t go in. It’s a great spot to enjoy sunsets with panoramic views of the water. The area is also one of the best diving spots on the island.

  • Visit the Mangroves

view of Bonaire's mangrove forests from Lac Cai Beach at Lac Bay

Did you know that Bonaire is home to lush mangrove forests? It actually plays a vital role in the island’s ecosystem, protecting the coastline from erosion. These unique forests are home to an array of marine and bird species and serve as nurseries for young marine life!

Experiencing these amazing habitats is definitely one of the best things to do in Bonaire. There are actually a few ways to see the mangroves too.

You’ll find the mangrove forests on Bonaire along the eastern coast of the island, particularly in Lac Bay and around the Pekelmeer Flamingo Sanctuary. Lac Bay is the biggest and most popular with visitors.

You can only enter the Lac Bay mangrove forest with a guide.  This kayak and snorkeling tour  with the Mangrove Center is a great way to experience the unique ecosystem. Over 2 hours, your nature guide will teach you all about the mangrove trees and the animals that live there.

We were unable to go on our trip, but would have loved to do a kayaking tour! Instead, we got a glimpse of the mangroves up close from hanging out at Lac Cai Beach. So if you’re tight on time, this is one way to catch a glimpse of the mangroves!

Check Out the Views from Seru Largu

Seru Largu is one of the highest hills on Bonaire Island. At the peak is a beautiful monument painted bright yellow with a large white cross. But the main attraction of Seru Largu is the breathtaking view it offers. From the hilltop, you’ll enjoy panoramic views of Bonaire’s rugged coastline, the Caribbean Sea, and the capital city of Kralendijk.

There are areas to hike all around or you can simply drive to the hilltop, where you’ll find plenty of parking.

And if you’re wondering what to do in Bonaire during the holidays, Seru Largu is a popular gathering point for locals and visitors alike. On New Year, everyone comes here to watch fireworks being set off!

  • Enjoy One of Bonaire’s Scenic Drives

aerial view of Queens Highway (Between 1000 Steps and Tolo Divesite) in Bonaire

Want to know what to do in Bonaire for some great views? Take a scenic drive! Bonaire is not an intimidating destination to drive and to enjoy most of the best things to do on Bonaire, it’s best reached by car anyway!

The island is full of scenic drives, especially if you’re going to drive through Washington Slagbaai National Park . Start here for some of the best Bonaire sightseeing whether you are doing the short route or long route.

As mentioned earlier, we highly recommend visiting. There are ancient limestone ledges carved out by the ocean waves, fields of towering stalks of cacti, and the ruins of an old lighthouse. You could stretch your legs with a swim at a cove beach like Boka Kokolishi or hike Bonaire’s highest point, Mount Brandaris.

Other scenic drives include following the road around the southern tip of the island . We did the drive from Lac Bay to the southern tip and then all the way back to Kralendijk (which can be done in reverse too). This coastal route passes the Willemstoren Lighthouse, beaches, old slave huts, salt pans and pyramids, plus a few opportunities to see flamingos. Plus, there are plenty of opportunities along the way for shore diving and snorkeling!

Another scenic drive (and my personal favorite) is the Queen’s Highway north of Kralendijik . Sections of this route are one-way, so you’ll want to start in Kralendijik and head north. You’ll pass coastal views of some of the most incredible blue water and cacti. You can make stops like 1000 Steps and Karpata to snorkel or dive. Then end your scenic drive by visiting Goto Lake to look for flamingos.

While scenic drives in Bonaire are a popular way to see the island, there are a few things to keep in mind. A lot of gas stations have limited hours, so fill up when you get the chance. And keep your tank filled if you’re going to take longer trips to remote locations.

Also, you need to pay for gas with cash here, we luckily had enough fuel in our tank but we found ourselves in a tricky spot when the gas station wasn’t open and our US debit card and credit card weren’t working at the pump.

  • Relax at the Beach

pink sand and queen conch shell at Lac Cai Beach in Bonaire

Relaxing on the beach is undeniably one of the best things to do in Bonaire! The island boasts a range of stunning beaches, each with its own character. Many of the beaches in Bonaire are hubs for snorkeling, diving, or wind sports, but there are a few that are also great for beach lounging!

Keep in mind, many of the beaches feature more of a rugged coastline and are better off for water sports. Some have crushed coral as well and are tough to walk on barefoot. This is why we recommend water shoes. However, there are a few white sandy beaches perfect for lounging and swimming at!

Lac Cai Beach is on the eastern side of Bonaire at Lac Bay. It’s a secluded beach known for its calm and shallow waters, making it perfect for swimming and snorkeling. There are calm waters, soft pink sand, and queen conch shells. There’s a restaurant here, too. It’s the perfect setting for relaxation and sunbathing.

This was probably my favorite beach for lounging in Bonaire. I really liked how gentle the shoreline was, people were even reading off their tablets while sitting in the water! This is definitely great if you’re traveling with kids as the bay and position of this beach protect you from the tradewinds and rough current that is found on the windward side of the island.

No Name Beach is situated on the uninhabited island of Klein Bonaire. It’s known for its powdery, white sand and stunning turquoise waters. Plus, it’s not far from the water taxis that frequent the island. The beach is a popular location with visitors for swimming and snorkeling and is well worth a beach day trip.

Just keep in mind there are no facilities here and you’ll want to come prepared with everything you need for your time at the beach plus take away anything you bring to the island including your trash.

Boka Slagbaai , located within Washington Slagbaai National Park, is one of the top Bonaire attractions and another picturesque beach worth visiting. There are the historic slave huts just off the cove beach. You can sunbathe on the beautiful white sand, swim, snorkel, or go cliff jumping on the rocks nearby.

There are also picnic tables and bathrooms here, the only place in the national park beyond the entrance to have a bathroom!

Te Amo Beach near Flamingo Airport is a popular spot for lounging at the beach, with lots of shade trees and even food trucks. It’s also one of the few beaches without rocky beds covered in coral. It has a soft sand bottom, making it perfect for swimming (just don’t go too far into the boat harbor).

PSST…if you don’t want to drive to the beach, you can join a tour!

  • Try the Local Cuisine

Yuana Stoba or Iguana Stew from Karel's Beach Bar in Bonaire

One of the best things to do in Bonaire is enjoy the unique flavors of the local fare. It’s a great way to learn about the island’s cultural history and traditions. Bonaire’s cuisine is influenced by its diverse heritage, including Dutch, Caribbean, and Latin American ingredients and preparations.

Here are a few local dishes you should try:

Stoba Kabritu is a rich stew made with tender pieces of goat meat, slow-cooked with aromatic herbs, spices, and vegetables, and is Bonaire’s national dish.

A unique and traditional Bonairean dish, Yuana Stoba is a soup made with iguana meat! It is a cultural delicacy, though it may not be to everybody’s taste. We tried it and it was a bit more bony than we were anticipating, so that’s something to be prepared for if you do try it!

Pastechi is a popular street food in Bonaire that makes for a quick snack. It consists of half-moon-shaped fried dough pockets filled with savory ingredients like cheese, meat, fish, or vegetables.

Sopi Kadushi is a soup made from the prickly pear cactus, locally known as Kadushi. The cactus is cooked with vegetables, herbs, and spices, resulting in a tasty broth.

You’ll find amazing seafood all over Bonaire, including Sopi Piska . This soup is made with fresh fish, vegetables, herbs, and spices in a broth. It’s a local favorite and is eaten as comfort food!

  • Fort Oranje

Fort Oranje is not only a historical site located in the heart of Kralendijk but also an important part of Bonaire’s present-day life. Built in the early 1600s, it’s the oldest standing structure on Bonaire Island. The fort served as a strategic defense structure against potential invasions.

Today, you can explore the fortifications and admire the architecture that reflects the Dutch influence on the island. The fort is also home to government buildings and serves as a hub of activity on the island.

You can take a stroll around the fort’s grounds and enjoy the scenic views of Kralendijk’s waterfront. And all around are shops, restaurants, and cafes, as well.

Where to Stay in Bonaire

Delfins Beach Resort in Bonaire

During our time in Bonaire we stayed at Delfin’s Beach Resort located just south of Kralendijk. They not only have the largest pool in Bonaire, but it’s a great location if you are renting a car to explore the best things to do in Bonaire as you’re just a short drive to many attractions.

You have the option to book apartments, studios, or villas with sweeping views of the pools or ocean at this 4-star resort. Our room overlooked the pools and you could still see the water off in the distance.

Delfin’s Beach Resort has an ample amount of parking for guests only, the pools are fantastic which also includes a swim up bar, and they have a great beach! In fact, they have a shore diving site and snorkel site on the property.

They also have a dive shop on site where you can exchange your tanks and take care of your gear in between dives as well as rent gear and even sign up for training if you’re new to diving or need a refresher.

the blue water at Delfins Beach Resort beach in Bonaire

You can lounge around at the beach on the beach chairs under a palapa umbrella and order drinks and food from the restaurants and bars on site.

Since we were busy exploring the best Bonaire attractions by day, this was the best place to sit back and watch a sunset at night.

Bonaire has ideal weather for 9 months of the year and the best time to visit Bonaire is from January through September, as October through December can bring on tropical storms and more rainfall.

Bonaire beaches vary from soft, sandy shores, some of which even have pink sand to beaches that are made up of crushed corals and rocks. Almost all the beaches have some rocks or pebbles so water shoes are great for enjoying Bonaire beaches, which are also famous for their shallow coral reefs and being the shore diving capital of the world as well as an excellent snorkeling destination.

Bonaire is best known for its pristine coral reefs and world-class diving opportunities being the shore diving capital of the world. Bonaire also is a great windsurfing and kitesurfing destination.

Bonaire uses the United States Dollar USD.

Both Bonaire and Curacao are great destinations, Bonaire is better known for its watersports including shore diving, snorkeling, kitesurfing, and windsurfing, and is a much smaller island to explore. Curacao also has great diving opportunities but better beaches for lounging and is a larger island to explore.

Bonaire is best explored by renting a car. You’ll want to get a high-clearance vehicle if you plan on visiting Washington Slagbaai National Park, otherwise, any rental car will do for exploring the island. If you don’t want to drive you can stay in Kralendijk and take day tours and excursions, but your trip will be limited for getting around beyond your tours as there’s no real public transportation.

The tap water in Bonaire is safe to drink as it’s distilled from sea water meeting the highest quality standards for safe drinking water of the World Health Organization.

This is your essential Bonaire travel guide that will help you plan an awesome vacation there.

Fun Facts About Bonaire

Bonaire is an island in the Leeward Antilles in the Caribbean Sea. You might have heard of the Caribbean’s “ABC” islands before: Aruba , Bonaire , and Curacao. These islands are about 50 miles off the coast of Venezuela and lie outside of the main hurricane zone in the Caribbean. This means that it’s unlikely that you’ll experience a hurricane in the ABC islands, making them an attractive choice during the Caribbean’s hurricane season (May to November).

A Brief History of Bonaire

Bon Bini! Welcome to Bonaire

Bonaire used to be a part of the Netherlands Antilles until the country’s dissolution in 2010. Now, Bonaire is considered to be a special municipality within the Netherlands . It is one of the BES islands along with Sint Eustatius and Saba. The current population of Bonaire sits at around 18,000.

Bon Bini! That means “welcome” in Papiamentu, a Creole language that’s spoken in Bonaire, Aruba, and Curacao. The language has roots in West Africa and came about after the Portuguese colonization of the island. It combines Portuguese vocabulary and West African language structures and allowed people to communicate with one another. It spread throughout the general population during the slave trade.

Bonaire flag

The official language of Bonaire is Dutch and it is used for most government transactions. Papiamentu is widely spoken among the locals. However, English and Spanish are both common as well. You’ll be able to get by with English, Spanish, or Dutch, but I suggest learning a few words in Papiamentu as well.

The currency of Bonaire is the US dollar. So, it’s really easy for those from the USA to travel to Bonaire as there’s no currency exchange required. Plus, it’s not too bad for Canadians either as we’re used to using US dollars when traveling across the border.

Where to Stay in Bonaire

Where to Stay in Bonaire

There are lots of beautiful hotels and properties in Bonaire that will give you a memorable, boutique experience. I suggest checking out the Divi Flamingo Beach Resort Bonaire or the One Ocean Boutique Apartments & Suites .

There are lots of fantastic hotels in Bonaire and vacation rentals in Bonaire . Here’s a helpful map if you’d like to browse all hotels and rentals in one place to compare them.

Getting Around Bonaire

Renting a car in Bonaire is the best way to get around the island on your own. You can drive from place to place with ease at your own pace. I suggest picking up a car at the Bonaire International Airport or in Kralendijk where you’ll likely be staying.

Bonaire licence plate

I recommend comparing car rental prices for the best rates with Discover Cars , my preferred company to find and book rental cars. If you’re thinking about driving at the Washington Slagbaai National Park, consider renting a 4×4 as the dirt roads can be a bit rocky and uneven.

Things to Do in Bonaire: Go Snorkeling or Diving

Klein Bonaire

Out of all the best things to do in Bonaire, many people travel to this southern Caribbean island for the snorkeling and diving opportunities. Out of all the places to go snorkeling in the Caribbean , I’d wager to say it is the best spot. It’s definitely in the top worldwide destinations for scuba diving and snorkeling, too.

Nature conservation is at the utmost importance in Bonaire. It’s one of the most eco-friendly and sustainable destinations you can visit for this very reason. 100% of the waters surrounding Bonaire and Klein Bonaire are protected, as well as 20% of the land. Taking anything from the national park, as well as taking sand, shell or corals is forbidden. Please use reef safe sunscreen when you go in the water, whether you’re enjoying Bonaire’s beaches or going scuba diving.

Bonaire National Marine Park

Bonaire National Marine Park - Klein Bonaire

The  Bonaire National Marine Park  (BNMP) is the oldest marine reserve in the world, established in 1979. The journey to protect these waters and the creatures in them began with turtle protection in 1961. Then, Bonaire prohibited spear fishing in 1971 and offered protection for all coral (living or dead) in 1975.

The BNMP includes all of the waters surrounding Bonaire and Klein Bonaire for an area spanning 27 km² (6672 acres). This includes all of the fish, creatures, coral reef, sea grass, and mangroves. There are 86 public dive sites in total with a strict no anchoring policy to protect the coral reef. You can access these dive sites from boat and many of these are great dive and snorkeling sites from the shore.

Snorkeling at Klein Bonaire

Things to do in Bonaire - Snorkeling and scuba diving

Our snorkeling tour in Bonaire went straight to Klein Bonaire because it’s one of the best places to snorkel and scuba dive in the Caribbean. Klein Bonaire is a only a short distance from the coast of Bonaire, only 800 meters away at its closest point. It’s Dutch for “Little Bonaire”.

Klein Bonaire is a paradise for divers and snorkelers alike. It is surrounded by brilliant coral reefs that are home to many fish and sea creatures. The island itself was purchased by the government in 1999. It’s now managed by the Bonaire National Marine Park. Even though it is unusual for land to be part of a national marine park, it is an important turtle nesting site.

Snorkeling with sea turtles in Bonaire

There’s a really high chance that you’ll be able to see turtles when you go snorkeling or scuba diving there. We saw a few turtles ourselves, and it was one of my most magical snorkeling experiences ever (and I’ve been snorkeling more than few times in my days!).

This  snorkeling tour in Bonaire  will take you to two different snorkeling sites at Klein Bonaire with snacks in between. It starts later in the afternoon so you can be out on the catamaran to see the sunset. Going snorkeling is one of the best things to do in Bonaire, especially if you love spotting wildlife on your travels.

Dock in Bonaire with boats

Looking for something a little more private? You can charter your own  private sail and snorkel safari  in Bonaire. You’ll be able to sail, snorkel, swim, and relax in the sunshine on your own private yacht. You can even customize your Bonaire itinerary with the captain to spend the day exactly as you like it.

Washington Slagbaai National Park

Washington Slagbaai National Park

It’s easy to spend an entire day at Washington Slagbaai National Park in Bonaire. Here’s a great tour where you’ll spend the whole day there. Go off-roading in a 4×4 to isolated beaches and blowholes at this ecological reserve. You can do some wildlife viewing, go for a hike, and even sprinkle some snorkeling into your day.

Washington Slagbaai National Park

Washington Slagbaai National Park is the first nature sanctuary in Bonaire, established in 1969. It’s located in the northern third of the island and it is a natural habitat for many species of plants and animals. Lots of bird and reptiles live at the park, including iguanas, parrots, and flamingos. The beaches at Washington Slagbaai National Park are important nesting grounds for turtles.

Hiking at Washington Slagbaai National Park

There are three hiking trails at Washington Slagbaai National Park to explore: the Lagadishi Walking Trail, the Subi Brandaris Trail, and the Kasikunda Climbing Trail. These have varying levels of difficulty. Be sure to bring proper hiking shoes and plenty of water as you’ll be beneath the heat of the sun.

Washington Slagbaai National Park

The Lagadishi Walking Trail is an easier jaunt that takes about two hours. You’ll see salt flats, sand dunes, mangroves, and beach views. The Subi Brandaris Trail is a moderately difficult 45 minute hike to the top of Brandaris, the highest peak on Bonaire. Lastly, the Kasikunda Climbing Trail is a difficult trek with uneven terrain to the top of a volcanic peak.

Points of Interest at Bonaire’s National Park

Washington Slagbaai National Park

There are many points of interest that you can see at Washington Slagbaai National Park on one of two driving routes. You can take the shorter driving route if you’re looking to get to the Subi Brandaris Trail to climb Brandaris. It also leads to the coastline to Bonaire’s most northern point.

The longer driving route around the national park leads to various natural attractions. You can visit beaches like Playa Chikitu (a gorgeous cove), Playa Funchi (a rocky beach, great for snorkeling), and Boka Kokolishi (a black sand beach). Boka Bartol and Wayaka are amazing dive sites at the national park. Plus, you can also visit the most northern lighthouse, Seru Bentana.

Explore Kralendijk, Bonaire’s Capital City and Main Port

Kralendijk Bonaire

Kralendijk is the charming capital city and main port of Bonaire. It’s the main shopping area in Bonaire, and there are lots of restaurants and cafes, too. Wandering around Kralendijk is one of the top things to do in Bonaire on a cruise because it’s right next to the cruise port.

GoGreen is a restaurant specializing in vegetarian and vegan cuisine if you’re looking for veggie options. Peanuts Bonaire is a fresh market cafe with vegan and gluten-free options always available. Here are more things to do in Bonaire’s capital city.

Kaya Grandi, the Main Street in Kralendijk

Kaya Grandi, the Main Street in Kralendijk

If you’re looking for things to do in Bonaire from a cruise ship, many people get off the ship and wander around Kralendijk. If you decide to walk around town, you’ll surely stumble upon Kaya Grandi. It’s the main shopping street in town.

All of the buildings are brightly painted and there are many styles of architecture from the 1800s and 1900s. You certainly won’t find any big brand name stores here. All of the shops are independently owned, so there was the opportunity to find some unique items. With so many Caribbean islands catering to chain stores and big brand jewelry shops, Bonaire is a breath of fresh air.

Bonaire Art and Craft Market

Bonaire art and craft market

For even more unique shopping opportunities, check out the Bonaire Art and Craft Market . The market is always open when there is a cruise ship in port, mostly throughout the winter months. You’ll have to take a look at their website for opening hours during other times.

Bonaire art and craft market

Justin and I wandered around the market and we found many locally produced and handmade items by Bonaire residents, with an emphasis on local specialties. There were handmade glass necklaces by artist, Charlene Bosch of Elements Bonaire. There were many pieces of jewelry made out of Dichroic Glass. I bought a necklace that is two different shades of blue that sparkle in the sunlight, which reminds me of the beautiful ocean all around Bonaire.

Bonaire art and craft market

We also purchased some sea salt and bath salts from a stand owned by Maria Lopez. Bonaire harvests its own salt and we were able to purchase Bonairean bath & scrub salts, as well as edible coarse sea salt. Since returning home, I’ve used the various scented baths salts for a relaxing aromatherapy experience at home.

Plasa Machi Mimi and the Market

Plasa Machi Mimi

Plasa Machi Mimi is an interesting yellow building that’s right along the waterfront at the cruise port. Every Friday, there is a vegetable market there with traders traveling from Venezuela to sell their fresh produce.

It’s an intriguing building, and you might be able to stop by the fresh produce market if you’re visiting on a Friday. Check it out if you’re in the Bonaire cruise port, even if you’re simply interested in old buildings.

Beautiful Beaches in Bonaire

Coastline of Bonaire

There are over 22 beaches in Bonaire. If you love going to the beach, you can easily visit a different beach every day throughout your stay. Some beaches in Bonaire are white sand beaches, and others have a darker color of shade due to crushed up coral and shells. Here are a few Bonaire beaches you should add to your Bonaire itinerary, especially if you’re looking to try new activities.

Lac Bay is a vast expanse of white sand beaches that’s perfect for lounging on a beach towel in the sunshine. Sorobon Beach is one of the best beaches at Lac Bay for its soft white sand and sparkling turquoise waters.

Lac Bay is famous for even more reasons beyond the beautiful beaches. It’s the Caribbean capital of windsurfing. You can rent windsurfing gear and book some lessons at Lac Bay, whether you’re a beginner or more advanced.

You can also go kayaking through the mangroves at Lac Bay. Take the Clear Bottom Kayak Tour in the Mangroves for this incredible experience. It’s one of the top preserved mangrove forests in the Caribbean. You’ll kayak on a glass bottom kayak through crystal clear waters. You’ll be able to see three different species of mangrove trees. Plus, you’ll also have the chance to go snorkeling at Lac Bay as part of the tour.

Lac Bay is part of the Bonaire National Marine Park. All guides are certified to ensure that there isn’t any damage to this delicate landscape.

Eden Beach is at the Eden Beach Resort where you can enjoy the beach for a small fee. It’s the most popular white sandy beach in Kralendijk, and it’s one of the top things to do in Bonaire on a cruise. Eden Beach is one of the busier beaches in Bonaire as it’s near the cruise port, but very convenient for cruisers. It’s also near the water taxi stop to Klein Bonaire.

If you’re looking for a lively and fun place to spend the afternoon, check out Eden Beach and its restaurant/bar, the Spice Beach Club. You can also rent water sport gear and snorkeling equipment here, too. With no shortage of beach loungers and palm trees, Eden Beach is a one stop shop if you have a day in Bonaire from a cruise ship.

Atlantis Beach

Atlantis Beach is on the southwestern coast of the island near the salt flats and the flamingo sanctuary. While you can try windsurfing at Lac Bay, Atlantis Beach is the home of kitesurfing. With kitesurfing, you are attached to the board and to the sail, so it might be a little easier to try than windsurfing if you’re new to either activity.

If you’re a beginner or you’ve tried it before, you might be intrigued to book this Private Two Hour Kitesurfing Lesson . It comes with all of the equipment you’ll need, plus a private instructor for one-on-one attention.

Bermuda isn’t the only place in the world with pink sand beaches ! Pink Beach in Bermuda also has pink sand created naturally from the crushed sea shells of microscopic sea creatures called foraminifera.

This pink sand beach is relatively narrow and doesn’t have the softest sand for lounging. However, it’s a great place to go snorkeling in Bonaire from the beach, and it’s also a fantastic place for a picnic.

Amazing Bonaire Attractions

Waterfront in Kralendijk

If you don’t have a rental car, you can schedule an island tour to visit multiple places in one sightseeing trip. You’ll get a great overview of the entire island. Check out this  Bonaire sightseeing tour . It’s a 3.5 hour excursion in an air conditioned mini-van from Kralendijk to various landmarks like the salt flats, a museum in Rincon, and the flamingo sanctuary at Goto Lake.

Things to do in Bonaire from a cruise ship

If you’re planning to take your own trip around the island in a rental car , here are the top Bonaire points of interest to include in your journey.

Donkey Sanctuary Bonaire

The Donkey Sanctuary in Bonaire is a fantastic place to spend a few hours and lend your support. About 400 donkeys live at the Bonaire Donkey Sanctuary and they are provided with food, water, and medical care as well as a happy life.

Donkeys are not native to the island of Bonaire. They were brought over by the Spaniards in the 17th century to assist with manual labor and farming. With the increase of modern technology, many people abandoned their donkeys and let them roam freely around the island.

As Bonaire is such a dry and hot island, many of the donkeys die of hunger or dehydration. Thankfully, the Bonaire Donkey Sanctuary has been able to rescue many of these donkeys and provide them with the chance to have fulfilling and healthy lives.

Donkey Sanctuary of Canada

I haven’t had the opportunity to visit Bonaire’s Donkey Sanctuary yet, but I have visited the Donkey Sanctuary near Cork, Ireland, as well as the Donkey Sanctuary of Canada back home. I’ve supported and volunteered at the Donkey Sanctuary in Guelph, Ontario, too. It’s such a rewarding and memorable place to viist. I highly recommend going to a donkey sanctuary on your travels.

Willemstoren Lighthouse

The Willemstoren Lighthouse was built in 1837, and it’s the most famous lighthouse on the southern tip of the island. It’s a great place to snap a few photos and admire the architecture. Unfortunately, the lighthouse isn’t open to the public. It’s worth a visit if you’re venturing to the southern portion of the island as it’s one of Bonaire’s most iconic attractions.

Salt Flats of Pekelmeer

The Salt Flats of Pelekmeer is one of the best places to go sightseeing in Bonaire. It’s on the southern end of the island as it has a very low elevation. The shallow lagoons there were modified over hundreds of years for the optimal salt cultivation and production. It’s really interesting to gaze out to the massive mounds of white salt towering over the pink salt pans below.

Pekelmeer Saltworks is also an Important Bird Area in Bonaire. A large region is designated as a Flamingo Breeding Reserve. This nesting site is essential for their survival. It might not be the best place in Bonaire to see flamingos as they can be quite elusive. Bring a pair of binoculars for the best chance to spot them.

Goto Lake (Goto Meer) for Flamingos

Goto Lake - Gotomeer - Flamingos

Flamingos also live at Goto Lake (Gotomeer) up towards the Washington Slagbaai National Park. You’ll have a better chance of spotting flamingos here. Gotomeer is a shallow, saline lagoon just south of the national park.

Goto Lake - Gotomeer - Flamingos

Gotomeer is one of two flamingo breeding sites in Bonaire. It’s also a wetland of international importance as it is home to many breeding birds and migrant shorebirds. Goto Lake is an excellent place to go birdwatching in Bonaire, and it shouldn’t be too difficult to spot at least a flamingo or two.

Rincon, the Oldest Village in Bonaire

For a dose of history in Bonaire, make a stop at Rincon, the oldest settlement in Bonaire. Stop at the Bonaire Heritage Foundation to pick up a self-guided walking tour brochure or you can also arrange for a guided tour with a local.

Stop by the Cadushy Distillery in Rincon to taste a truly unique beverage to Bonaire. They produce the Cactus Liqueur Cadushy of Bonaire Liqueur. With a trip to the distillery, you’ll be able to drink a cactus, sample the products, or relax while sipping on the cocktail of the day. They also have a different liqueur named for every Dutch Caribbean island.

Seru Largu

Seru Largu is the most popular lookout point in Bonaire. It’s an observation deck on a mountain plateau with sweeping panoramic views of Bonaire. There’s a short, steep drive to the very top, but the scenery is worth the detour.

If you’re staying in Bonaire for a little while, make the trip to Seru Largu at sunset for one of the best places to watch the sunset in Bonaire.

Bonaire Botanical Garden

I love visiting gardens when I travel, and the one you’ll find in Bonaire is unlike many others. The Bonaire Botanical Garden near Rincon specializes in native plants in a desert terrain. You’ll find lots of cacti, medicinal plants, and organic herb gardens.

Take an hour and a half tour around the Bonaire Botanical Garden, which ends with a complimentary cup of fresh herbal tea using ingredients from the garden itself.

More Things to Do in Bonaire

Looking for more outdoor adventures and activities besides snorkeling, diving, or visiting the above attractions? There are lots of opportunities to try new sports and activities. Here are a few more fun things to do in Bonaire.

Explore the Caves in Bonaire

Caves in Bonaire

When you drive around Bonaire, you’ll notice that portions of the island have a rocky, volcanic landscape. You can explore some of these caves, but I would definitely do this with a local guide. Locals know all of the best spots, plus they’ll know what is safe to visit (and what isn’t). On this Bonaire Cave Tour , you’ll visit three caves with a local guide.

Landsailing in Bonaire

Have you ever heard of landsailing? Chances are that you’ve never gone sailing on the sand before. Well, here’s your chance! After a brief, 10 minute lesson to learn how to sail a blokart (it doesn’t take long to learn how to do this), you’ll be racing around in no time on the landsailing beach track.

It’s a great activity for kids, too. There are shadow blokarts with a “side car” so you can let your kids come along for the ride, too. You’re able to completely control the speed to go as slow or fast as you’d like. Embark on Bonaire Landsailing Adventures when you travel to Bonaire.

Bonaire is an amazing island in the southern Caribbean and there are so many fun things to do in Bonaire. While it's mainly known as an amazing place for scuba diving and snorkeling, there are so many Bonaire attractions, activities, and sightseeing opportunities. Let me show you how to plan your Bonaire itinerary.

Bonaire is an island municipality of the Netherlands and lies in the southern Caribbean about 50 miles off the coast of Venezuela. It’s part of the ABC Islands , Aruba, and Curacao being the other two.

The thing that Bonaire is most known for is scuba diving — it’s one of the best shore diving locations in the world. But there’s more to this little island than scuba diving.

Here are the  top 7 things to do in Bonaire plus some FAQs about the island and tips to make your trip awesome.

Quick Facts About Bonaire

Bonaire is a unique island. It can sometimes feel more like a desert than a tropical island. Cactus flourish in Bonaire’s dry, windy climate and you will see a ton of them. Literally everywhere. There are no stoplights on the island and don’t be surprised if you spot a wild goat or donkey walking about.

Another interesting thing I noticed is that I didn’t see many kids. Most of the tourists tended to be adults traveling without children. There weren’t a ton of beach areas that would be good for kids or many activities geared towards kids, so this is probably a trip where you would want to leave them home.

While the climate is tropical and it’s a Caribbean island, there aren’t many white sandy beaches. Most are very rocky and small. There aren’t many big hotels or resorts either — most accommodations are small, independently run hotels. There is 1 KFC on the island (if you are into that sort of thing).

Bonaire Quick Facts:

Size: 110 square miles

Language: Dutch and Papiamentu are the official languages, however, English and Spanish are widely spoken.

Currency: U.S. Dollar

Climate: Temperatures average about 82 degrees. September and October are the hottest, least windy months.

Airport: Bonaire International Airport, also called Flamingo International Airport (BON)

7 Fun Things To Do In Bonaire

Bonaire is known for its amazing reef system which has turned it into a shore diving mecca. But, you don’t have to be a scuba diver to have fun in Bonaire.

1. Scuba Diving and Snorkeling

Scuba diving is the #1 thing to do on the island of Bonaire , hands down (shore diving, specifically.) The entire island is a gold mine for divers and many accommodations cater specifically to shore divers. However, it’s great for snorkeling too.

Bonaire activities - scuba diving

The island is surrounded by coral reefs right off the coast and it’s all easily accessible without a boat! You can rent a truck, rent your gear, find an entry point, and hop right in the water!

There are over 80 dive sites between Bonaire and Klein Bonaire (a small, uninhabited island right next to Bonaire). In addition to diving, many of these sites have reefs that are very shallow, so you’ll find lots of great snorkeling spots to explore too.

Pro Tip: Whether snorkeling or diving you will want some hard-soled water shoes . The beaches are can be very rocky and some have bumpy paths to navigate before even getting to the beach. Yes, they are really ugly so you know I would only recommend them if they were absolutely necessary!

Activities in Bonaire - Donkey Sanctuary

2. Donkey Sanctuary

The Donkey Sanctuary Bonaire is home to over 700 donkeys and is one of the best things to do in Bonaire! The property is huge, so the donkeys have plenty of room to roam free.

As you drive through the Sanctuary the donkeys will gently ask for food shove their faces in your car window. Be sure to buy a few bags of carrots at the front entrance so you can feed them. There are tons of donkeys here so save some carrots for the guys at the end!

You can tour the property by car, bike, scooter, or foot.

Hours of Operation: Daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. (entrance closes at 4 p.m.)

Cost: $9 for adults and kids 13+, $4.50 for kids up to 12 years old, $3 per bag for carrots

3. Take a Drive Around the East Side of the Island

You need to rent a car to get around Bonaire. Since you will have wheels anyways, take a drive around the east and south sides of the island. This scenic drive will take you through the salt flats (huge ponds used for salt production), slave huts, flamingos, beaches, and tons of dive sites.

It’s a picturesque drive and a great way to spend the afternoon in Bonaire.

If you’re in Bonaire on a cruise or aren’t renting a car, you can find lots of tours that will take you around the island.

4. Visit Kralendijk

Kralendijk is Bonaire’s “downtown”. Located right by the cruise ship port, this little town is definitely busier on cruise days. However, don’t think it’s necessarily better to visit on a day when there isn’t a cruise in port to avoid the crowds — many of the shops are not open on days without a cruise ship in port. The town is all but shut down on Sunday night.

Flamingo Sculpture in Kralendijk

You’ll find gift shops, restaurants, and nice views of the water in Kralendijk.

Don’t miss the Casdushy Distillery shop to sample some cactus liqueur and visit the giant flamingo sculpture by the water. This public work of art is made from trash that was found in the ocean!

Lac Bay is located on the east side of the island and is home to beaches, windsurfing, mangroves, and kayaking . The cool thing about the beaches here are that they are shallow for hundreds of feet out from shore. You can wade in waist-deep water without being anywhere near the beach.

This is the perfect spot to take a kite surfing lesson ! Since the bay is so shallow, it’s a great place to try it out. I didn’t on this trip, but I might give it a try next time.

Lac Bay Bonaire | Things to do in Bonaire

Pro Tip: Lac Bay is a windy spot. Leave your giant, floppy vacation hat at home!

6. Washington Slagbaai National Park

Bonaire’s national park lies on 14,000 acres of land on the northwest side of the island. The park offers mountain biking, hiking, snorkeling, and scuba diving, plus lots of beautiful scenery!

Cost: $25 per adults, children under 12 are free; admission is included with your STINAPA diver tag (currently $45 per person and a requirement to dive); If you have a $10 STINAPA nature tag (required for snorkeling and other water sports), admission is $15

Guided Tours: Slagbaai National Park tours

Contact: Washington Slagbaai National Park

Washington Slagbaai National Park | Bonaire activities

The drive through the park takes 1.5-2.5 hours, not including any stops. If you stop to swim, dive, or relax this can easily turn in to a full day trip. The road leading to the exit of the park is bumpy AF. Seriously, it’s just awful. If you have any type of motion sickness, this isn’t the activity for you.

Pro Tip: There are no amenities like food/beverage stands in the park, so bring plenty of water and a travel-friendly cooler with some snacks.

7. Echo Dos Pos Parrot Conservation Tour

One day when we were driving around, we stumbled on the Echo Conservation Center . There was a sign outside that said they did tours once a week, so we went back later in the week to check it out.

Echo Conservation Center Bonaire | Things to do in Bonaire

The tour lasts 1-1.5 hours and will take you through the property to explain the group’s effort to protect and conserve different parrot species – specifically the yellow-shouldered Amazon parrot .

It was fun to learn a little about these birds and to see some up close. The volunteer who led our group was super passionate about what he was doing, and I like being around those kinds of people, so it was an enjoyable tour.

You don’t need advance reservations for this tour.

Public Tours: Wednesdays at 5 p.m.

Cost: $10 in cash per person

Private Tours: Available with at least 48 hours advance notice; recommended times are 7 a.m. or 5 p.m.

Private Tour Cost: $25 per person in cash; 2 person minimum

Restaurants In Bonaire

One of the best things to do in Bonaire is to eat!

And there is a huge variety of restaurants in Bonaire . We ate everything from pizza and Italian to Columbian and Japanese. The odd thing about the majority of restaurants is that they don’t open until 6 p.m. for dinner . While that’s not super late, it’s strange to not have the option to eat earlier if you wanted to.

Everything is very casual in Bonaire so there is no need to get dressed up for dinner.

One thing to note about restaurants in Bonaire: the service sucks. Like, totally sucks. Like, good luck if you want more water or another drink or Lord help you if there is something wrong with your food. It’s probably not happening. Most servers come over once to get your order and then they disappear. When you want your check you have to flag someone down.

Despite that, American tourists are expected to tip .

La Creperie Restaurant in Kralendijk

La Terrazza

This Italian restaurant is pretty unique because there is no set menu. You can tell the waiter if there is anything you don’t like, but you don’t know what you are eating until it’s in front of you.

They offer small plates for $7 and wine for $5. You can order as many or as few courses as you want. The salad wasn’t great but we had a spinach soup that was excellent and one of the best pasta primaveras I have ever had.

This is a Japanese restaurant with a second-floor balcony overlooking the main street. It was good but overpriced. And they serve their red wine ice cold (I have been known to drink cold red wine if necessary but I have never had it served that way at a restaurant).

Pro Tip: Osaka and the restaurant on the first floor of the building are different restaurants! (It’s not obvious) The restaurant right underneath this one has a sign with the same font so it’s easy to assume they are the same place. We went in and asked for a table upstairs…at the time we didn’t realize they were 2 separate restaurants! We must not have been the first people to do this because the dude working there made no attempt to hide his disgust with us as he waved us to the upstairs restaurant. Ooops!!

Italy In The World

This is a cute little Italian place that makes you forget you are on an island. The interior looks like a restaurant you might see in a less tropical location with walls stacked high with wine bottles. The food and wine were very good but a little overpriced for what it was.

Pasa bon Pizza

The pizza was ok, not great. I didn’t particularly like the crust on it. However, if I was in town again I would probably give it another try. They have some cool photographs on the wall to check out while you are there. Oh, and Lionfish Pizza. They have that too.

Rum Runners

This is a restaurant at Captain Don’s Habitat. You can sit outside overlooking the water, so it’s a nice place to eat while the sun sets. It offers typical bar food, but it was good. I ordered the namesake drink (and I tend to shy away from frozen drinks because they are too sweet) and it was quite good.

Rum Runners restaurant at Captain Don's Habitat

Cuba Compagnie

This restaurant has lots of outdoor seating right in the main square near the cruise terminal. The menu was international with a Cuban flair. The food was pretty good and the prices were reasonable.

This was my husband’s favorite restaurant on our trip. It’s a little hole in the wall a little outside of town. We ended up sitting outside which was a lot nicer than the inside however, there are only 2 small tables. There was one waiter who was super pleasant and spoke really good English, but he left right after he took our orders. The food ended up being pretty good, and it was a good value. I was pleasantly surprised.

La Creperie

This was one of my favorite restaurants in Bonaire. It’s located right across from the water in town with a nice view. You can get crepes and waffles with sweet or savory fillings. This was the last meal we ate before heading to the airport. If I had tried it earlier in the trip I probably would have gone back a second time.

The only thing I didn’t love about this place was that we ordered water and ended up with 2 bottles of water for $3 each. I would suggest bringing your own or ordering a real drink.

This is a little coffee and ice cream shop right on the water downtown that has the best ice cream in Bonaire . They had one called Lotus Speculoos which is basically Biscoff cookies. Guys, they have Biscoff cookie ice cream! !! And it was only $2 for a scoop. Yes and yes.

Pro Tip: Do NOT go to Gio’s for ice cream. It was terrible. We actually threw our cones out and went back to Luciano.

Tips For Tourists In Bonaire

Overall Bonaire is a very laid back and friendly island. English is widely spoken and the official currency is the U.S. dollar so it’s also an easy place to visit.

Even if you aren’t into scuba diving, there’s plenty of things to do in Bonaire to keep you busy. Since it’s a small island, it’s a great place to visit on a cruise.

Here are a few quick tips to keep in mind when visiting Bonaire.

  • Bonaire is close to the equator and it’s windy. This combination makes it easy to not realize you are getting burned. Bring a tight-fitting hat (floppy vacation hats will blow right off your head) and a good reef-safe sunscreen.
  • Don’t expect great service in any restaurant.
  • English is common but you will also hear Dutch, Papiamentu, and Spanish.
  • The currency is the U.S. Dollar.
  • There are approximately 8,962 grocery stores on Bonaire. Most of them are small and dumpy. For a good grocery store experience, go to Van Den Tweel . It’s worth any extra drive you might have to make to get there.
  • Know how to navigate a roundabout. There are no stoplights on Bonaire, but there are a bunch of roundabouts.
  • Don’t expect any big, fancy resorts. This island isn’t very developed compared to other tourist destinations and you won’t find a Grand Hyatt or Ritz Carlton here. What you will find are small, independent hotels and bed and breakfasts. Many of these cater to shore divers so while you might be missing out on luxury, you will enjoy convenience when it comes to diving.
  • You will need to rent a car in Bonaire (or a truck if you are diving) and you should leave it unlocked.
  • Even if you are just snorkeling, it’s a good idea to bring water shoes  or hard-soled scuba booties as the beaches and water can be very rocky.

Our best dining experience has been at Eddy’s. Excellent food and the best service we have had while on Bonaire.

Thanks for the recommendation – I’ll be sure to check out Eddy’s on our next trip to Bonaire.

8,962 grocery stores? This is not even remotely possible. I hate to be cliche’ but Bonairians are on island time so service can be slow at some places. The higher end restaurants seem to be more normal in this regard.

Hi Garry, Yes, I agree, the service at some restaurants can be a bit slow…but I sort of expect that when I’m in the Caribbean.

' data-src=

It’s not true that the service in the restaurants on Bonaire is not good, how do you get there? We have eaten at several restaurants, perfect service. Once we send fish back to the kitchen, it was not right baking, we get something else and that was perfectly baking I fon’t know where you ate? .

Hi Mary, I’m glad to hear you had good service!

Most of the service we had was sub par…things like never getting a water refill, never asking how the food was, never getting to order another drink…most of the waiters and waitresses we had would take our order and bring the food and we would never see them again. Of course this wasn’t the case everywhere, but it was common among the restaurants we at at.
