Accommodation:

Gaurishankar  is the world second highest peak of the Gaurishankar region, beyond Melungtse (7,181m) . Name of the Gaurishanker comes from Snaskrit for the Goddess (Gauri) and her partner (Shyankar) indicating the holy regard to which is afforded by the peoples of Tibet and Nepal.

Mt. Gaurishankar  is situated western edge of the Rolwaling Himal , around 100 km 62 m North-East of Kathmandu valley (It is nearly directly between Kathmandu and Mt. Everest and is visible from Kathmandu) . To the west of the peak situate at the valley of the Bhote Koshi and the western partition of the  Rolwaling Himal . To the north lays at the Menlung Chu which isolates it from its sister peak of Menlungtse. To the south ridge lies in the Rolwaling Chu , which lead up to the  Tashi Lapsa Pass , providing access to the region of Khumbu . The mountain has two summits i.e. the northern (higher) and Southern summit thus they are called as Shankar (Shiva’s Manifestation) and Gauri (Partner of Shiva) respectively. Interestingly it rises above the Bhote Koshi only 5km away and is conserved on all sides by steep faces and long corn iced ridges.

Trekking Team:

Being homeland of Himalayas, it’s obvious to have challenging routes, dangerous weather, health issues; any of these situations is enough to ruin your trip. Himalayan Magic Treks have been providing native leaders and staffs working in this field perfectly since many years to overcome tough challenges and make your trip a golden memory. Best Season to Trek in Nepal:

Autumn (September - November) and spring (March - May) is the best season for trekking and mountaineering in Nepal. Weather is mostly clear and temperature is moderate in these seasons which offer beautiful views without any obstruction. Spring grants you beautiful flowers, plants and rare animals. Walking is favorable during these seasons.

Summer (June - August) and winter (December - February).

Though summer has heavy monsoon rainfall, it is very much clearer to trek around Mustang, Dolpo and Nar- Phu valley since they are rain shadow areas. Everest, Langtang, Annapurna as well as Tibet trek are always better to trek in winter season.

Experience & Fitness:

Trekking can be challenging and exhausting. So you might need some fitness training and experience for some tough trial. Nepal Trekking in Everest Base Camp does not require past experience or extreme fitness even though we have more challenging routes in different region compared to that of Everest. Trekking in Himalayas always takes us to challenging altitudes and rocky routes. You could ask for proper rest time and acclimatization to sustain your strength. Mountains can never be achieved in a day. We always provide the detail in our itinerary. However certain training like running, skipping and other workouts will definitely be beneficial in such challenging routes.

Acclimatization:

Altitude sickness is a major risk when trekking. You might experience it on any trails above 2,500 m however; good health, proper care and drinking plenty of water will definitely help you to prevent from altitude sickness. Every trekkers needs to be familiar with the heights and altitude so, for this we have life saving appropriate acclimatization days during the trek, We also provide certain medical support for your relief and emergency rescue through helicopter whenever the situation gets worse.

Eco Friendly:

Our only goal in the Himalayas is to leave the memories and foot prints; Himalayan Magic Treks is concerned on environment pollution issue and global warming. We are always serious and genuine about our garbage during the trek especially during camping. We collect the rubbish and dump it to the proper place to protect our environment and also appeal our clients to do the same. We partake in every program conducted in KEEP ( Kathmandu Environmental Education Project ) and other environmental conservation programs. We want to promote Safe environment act and stand against pollution & global warming.

Tailor-made Itinerary:

Sometimes trekking in the Himalayan region passes through unexpected complication like natural calamity, health challenges and many other problems that might result to the changes of the itinerary. So, we kindly request you to cooperate with your guide and the team in such situation.

Gaurishankar foothills trek overview.

The stunning landscape and time-locked city of Lapchi Kang are true gems of Nepal’s middle hill region. Follow this exciting journey ( Gaurishankar Foothills ) as we trek over hills and valley, through remote villages and on old trails in the region that some of the very first expeditions to the Himalayas traversed.

We begin our passage from Jiri and proceed along ridges and across rivers to enjoy spectacular views of 7000 m Mount Gaurishankar peak as well as incredible mountain panoramas from the Tinsang La. This trek is a great way to experience the age old culture of the region away from the vigorousness of city life.

Expect to accumulate a healthy amount of elevation without actually gaining much net elevation. We remain well below the tree line, with our highest point being at Tinsang La (3300 m). The smooth nature of the terrain requires active hiking capabilities and provides a good workout for the muscles.

There should be no issues related to acclimatization as we will not gain much net elevation. Gauri Shankar Foothills Trek is a moderate level trek that is also best for first-time hikers and regular trekkers.

Why Gaurishankar Foothills Trek?

  • Trekking through the exceptional landscape of Nepal’s Middle Hills.
  • Unspoiled mountain scenery.
  • One of Nepal’s highest passes and stunning views of Cho-Oyu, Everest, Nuptse, and Makalu.
  • The unique Kargyupa Nunnery at Bigu Gompa.
  • Spectacular mountain panorama from the Tinsang La.

Itinerary details.

Arrive at Kathmandu after a scenic flight over the mountains. Meet the representative of Himalayan trekkers and transfer to Hotel. Rest of the time enjoy strolling the surrounding area.

After breakfast at the hotel, a tour guide will take you to the historical and cultural places of Kathmandu. The Kathmandu city presents a fabulous mix of Hinduism, Tibetan Buddhism and western influence in the valley. There will be a half-day guided tour to the famous and biggest Hindu shrine of Pashupatinath, the largest Buddhist stupa in Boudhanath, Kathmandu Durbar Square and Swayambhunath.

We begin our trek from Kathmandu with a leisurely drive along ‘Friendship Highway’ to Lamosangu from where we continue on to Jiri and then Charikot. We continue northwards along the Bhote Kosi Valley up to Singati (950m). We set up camp close to this small town.

The first day of our climb begins with a steady ascent through alpine forests that leads out into open pastures. The Bhote Kosi is a constant presence, in our sight throughout the day. Perched on the high ridge beside Bulung (2150m), we relax to a spectacular view of Gauri Shankar.

This day of hiking is mostly relaxing as we head downhill, all the while following the Sangawa Khola. It is a joy to experience the indigenous flora and fauna in the region. We finally descend to our campsite at Chilingkha (1920m).

We begin the day with ease hiking downhill for about three hours till we reach the Samling Khola (1720m), a tributary of the main river. We cross the tributary across a narrow but sturdy bridge and begin the ascent to Bigu Gompa (2110m). We pitch our tents by the nunnery and settle in for a quiet night.

We take a leisure day to rest and recoup our wits after the last couple of days of rigorous hiking. We explore the famous nunnery of Bigu Gompa that was built in the 1930s and houses spectacular gardens which are a delight.

Another easy start to the day with a downhill descent of over 800m to the river is followed by a sharp ascent to the highest point of our trek, the Tinsang La (3300m). We rest atop the Tinsang La and gather our strength while we take in the stunning views of the surrounding Himalayan range. We then descend sharply to set up camp at Dolangsa (2490m). All in all, this is the most exacting day of hiking.

A fun-filled day of hiking along banks and through varied woodland ecologies awaits us as we set off through grazing pastures littered with yaks. The terraced fields that are characteristic of such high regions are a wonderful vision for first-time hikers to the area. We even pass some waterfalls along the way and soon arrive at the village of Gorthali (1710m) where we make our final camp of the trek. From here on out, we will not have any Sherpas or guides attached to our group as we can find our way back to Kathmandu quite easily from here. So on this day we will enjoy with our crew members and give a remarkable farewell to them.

The final day of our trek follows long, winding and level trails that are frequented by the locals. We make our way through swaths of rhododendrons and prickly oak trees before crossing a tributary stream and arriving by the Bote Kosi River. From atop this ridge, we catch our final glimpses of the majestic Himalayan range and then head down the hillside to Barabaise. Retracing our journey, we take the ‘Friendship Highway’ back to Kathmandu having come to a whole loop.

Today either you can visit some of the heritage sites of Kathmandu or you can spend your day by exploring the market area and shopping.

In the evening, joining the team of Himalayan trekkers for farewell dinner with cultural show.

You can depart from Kathmandu to your home country or extend the trip and head for another trip within or outside Nepal.

Have a safe journey and please do visit Nepal again!

Overview of Gaurishankar Trek

The Gaurishankar Trek, or Tsho Rolpa Lake Trek , is one of the lesser-known trekking routes . It begins in Rolwaling and ends at Tsho Rolpa, Nepal’s largest glacier lake. Despite its proximity to one of the most popular trekking destinations, the Everest region, Tsho Rolpa remains peaceful and remote. The hike includes a spectacular view of the Gaurishankar Himal (7134 m) from start to finish, in addition to the picturesque lake Tsho Rolpa.

The road to the trek’s beginning point (the trading town of Dolakha), located in the country’s northeastern area, follows the path from Kathmandu to Lhasa, Tibet.

There are interesting terraced fields, fast-flowing rivers, woodlands, and two wonderful glaciers to see, as well as the stunning glacial lake of Tso Rolpa. This journey begins at a low elevation, giving trekkers plenty of time to acclimate before reaching the lake. Although the trail does not reach high altitudes, trekking days are typically 6–8 hours long, requiring a high fitness level.

Among the mountains visible on this path are Gauri Shankar (7,145 m) and Menlungtse (7,181 m). The route passes through Brahmin, Chhetri, Tamang, and Sherpa communities, as well as Bigu Gompa, which houses over 300 nuns. The mani stones along the trail and prayer flags flying in the breeze indicate that this area is predominantly Buddhist.

This is a fantastic alternative trek for those who wish to avoid traveling at high elevations but are interested in the culture of the people of the Everest region .

Essential Information - Gaurishankar Trek

Gaurishankar trek route map.

The trek starts with a scenic drive from Kathmandu to Gonga Khola, which takes around 8–9 hours, and a trek the same day to Simigaon, which will take 2–3 hours. Along the way, you’ll pass through small villages and get a chance to meet the locals and learn about their way of life.

You’ll continue your trek to Dongang, passing through dense forests and several waterfalls. Further on, the trail takes you to Beding, a small village at the foot of the Tsho Rolpa glacier. It is a rest day in Beding, which will give you a chance to explore the village and take in the local culture. The next day, you will trek to Tsho Rolpa Lake, one of the main highlights of the trek, and then back to the village on the same day.

After that, you will be back on the same trail at Gongar Khola and then reach Kathmandu. Throughout the trek, you’ll have a chance to experience the natural beauty and cultural richness of Nepal, making memories that will last a lifetime.

Is the Gaurishankar Trek difficult?

The highest hill on this Gaurishankar Trek is Tsho Rolpa, which is 4580 m above sea level. Getting to this height is neither easy nor hard . The Rolwaling path is not difficult in terms of the technical climbs, but you do have to walk for 6–8 hours every day.

In the same way, you will gain 300–400 m every day. The scary thing about the Tsho Rolpa walk is not the route itself, but the height of the trail. So, you must have a lot of drive and be in good health. Most of the time, trekking to higher altitudes takes average physical fitness, a positive attitude, and a strong will.

Gaurishankar Trek Permit

To walk to Tsho Rolpa in the Rolwaling Valley, you must have a Gaurishankar Conservation Area entry permit. The entrance fee to the Gaurishankar Conservation Area is 3,000 NPR (about USD 30) for all foreign tourists and 1,000 NPR (approximately USD 10) for SAARC nationals. Aside from that, you’ll need a TIMS permit.

Accommodation on Gaurishankar Trek

The Gaurishankar Trail is dotted with lodges and teahouses where hikers can rest their heads for the night. These teahouses are basic yet pleasant, with amenities like beds and blankets and a common restroom. Meals, such as dal bhat (rice and lentil soup) and momos (dumplings), are available in the teahouses as well.

Expenses for lodging and food are not uniform across the country or even the year. As the height of your climb increases, you should expect your lodgings to become more primitive, with less access to modern conveniences like running water and electricity.

Food on Gaurishankar Trek

During your trek on the Tsho Rolpa trail, you’ll be able to try both traditional Nepalese food and some simple Western meals . Teahouses and hotels along the trekking route serve hearty meals like dal bhat (rice, lentil soup, and vegetables), momos (meat or vegetable-filled dumplings), noodles, fried rice, and curries. These meals give you the nutrients and energy you need for hiking at high altitudes. Hot drinks like tea, coffee, and hot chocolate are also served in teahouses.

Fresh fruits and vegetables may be harder to find at higher levels, but teahouses still serve basic meals and snacks like canned fruits and vegetables, instant noodles, biscuits, and energy bars. It’s important to remember that there may not be many food options in some places, so it’s a good idea to bring some snacks and energy bars as a backup.

Best season to trek Gaurishankar

The best times to do the Tsho Rolpa trek are in the spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November), when the weather is stable and clear. During these seasons, trekking is a great way to see the area because the days are sunny and the weather is warm. In the spring, the rhododendron forests are full of flowers, while in the fall, the mountains and landscapes can be seen clearly.

It’s important to remember that the weather in the mountains can change quickly, so it’s best to check the forecast before setting out on the hike. Planning ahead and making plans with a registered trekking agency can also help make sure that trekking is safe and fun.

Altitude Sickness & Acclimatization of Gaurishankar Trek

During the Gaurishankar trek, it’s important to know the signs of altitude sickness and to tell your trekking guide right away if you feel any of them. If your symptoms are bad, your guide may tell you to rest or go down to a lower height . Some trekking companies bring with them portable hyperbaric tanks that can be used to treat altitude sickness if it happens.

To avoid altitude sickness, it’s best to go up slowly , follow a good acclimatization schedule, stay hydrated, and eat foods that are high in carbs and calories. Don’t drink alcohol or smoke because they can make mountain sickness worse and make the body less hydrated. Most hikers can avoid altitude sickness and have a safe and enjoyable time on the Gaurishankar Trail if they follow these tips.

gaurishankar trek

Rolwaling/ Garurishankar lies in the Northcentral of Nepal in the Dolakha district of Bagmati Province where the Helambhu and Khumbu regions are neighboring on the west and east of it respectively. Charikot Bazar is the ideal town to start all the treks within the Gaurishankar conservation area. If you are starting your journey from Kathmandu then you can take a private vehicle or you can drive by local buses which are available from Ratnapark Bus station. In the past, everyone used to start their trek right from Charikot but nowadays off road facility has reduced the trekking duration. Currently, the road has reached Lamabagar where the Tama Koshi hydropower is based. If you are trekking toward Rolwaling valley or Tashi Lapcha Pass then Chhetchhet is your trekking start point and the Lapche valley trek starts from Lama Bagar which is half an hours drive from Chhetchhet. Recently Chhetchhet and Lama Bagar are the most popular trekking entry and exit points because of the new road construction.

Road condition of Rolwaling Gaurishankar Trek The road connection from Kathmandu reaches the furthest to Lama Bagar village. Trekkers trekking to Bigu Gompa can drive to Sotang River as the last drivable point.  Those who are heading to Tashi Lapcha and Rolwaling valley can drive to Chhetchhet and start the trek from there. Currently, there is a new road construction project is going above the old trekking trail. The under-construction road comes from Lumnang to lama Bagar and vice versa. In between the road is not yet fully connected and trekkers and local people needs to use the same old path.

Permits are mandatory to enter the Gaurishankar area of both Rolwaling and Lapche valley for all-purpose whether you are visiting by air or land. To obtain restricted permits for Lapchi at least two travelers are required. Restricted permits are issued from Nepal Immigration Department through registered and authorized trekking agencies. If you are single and willing to visit Lapchi but not able to trek because of no permits. Please let us know, we can help you to get done with your permits.

Many Say that Rolwaling Doesn’t need restricted Trekking Permits. Is it true?

Let me clarify it. For many trekkers, it is confusing which part of the Rolwaling area required restricted permits. Local-level government division was made based on article 56 of the Constitution of Nepal 2015 such as municipalities, municipalities, and district assemblies. Since that time Department of Immigration of Nepal decided to bring changes in the royalties of the restricted areas.

Within the Gaurishankar conservation area, Bigu Rural Municipality (All areas of ward number 1) and Gaurishankar Rural Municipality (All areas of ward Number 9) required restricted trekking permits. Lapche valley lies inside Gaurishankar rural municipality and Lama Bagar of Rolwaling lies inside Bigu Rural Municipality.

Trekking in Rolwaling require following permits:

Permits cost for Conservation area are normally paid in Nepali rupees and restricted permit’s royalties are charged in US Dollars.

1. Gaurishankar Conservation Area Permit (GCAP) cost NPR 3000 per person for one time single entry

2. Special Permit for Rolwaling and Lapchi cost USD 20 per person per week

3. Sagarmatha National Park costs NPR 3000 per person for a one-time single entry.

4. Khumbu Rural Municipality costs NPR 2000 per person for a one-time single entry.

Trekking in Lapchi is the same as other restricted areas of Nepal where you are not allowed to visit the places individually. You must need a local trekking agency to prepare your permits, guides, and even organize your whole trip.

Gaurishankar Conservation Area (GCAP) entry ticket is issued by the Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation located within the Nepal Tourism Board office building at Brikutimandap in Kathmandu. It is also available during your visit at the entry point.

To obtain your permits for Rolwaling and Lapche, you need to email us the following documents at [email protected] or [email protected]

This Mighty Mountain is visible even from Kathmandu and it is approximately 100 kilometers away from Kathmandu city.
  • Tsho Rolpa Lake Tsho Rolpa is a glacial lake located at the height of 4580 meters, one of the biggest lakes in Nepal. Rolwaling valley offers an opportunity for mountaineers who want to experience some difficult and challenging climbing routes. Shipton was the first person who explored the upper Rolwaling area in 1951. But at that time no one has climbed peaks in this area. After a year of Shipton’s visit, W.H Murray’s team summited Ramdung Go peak in 1952. There are numbers of peaks that are lured by many serious mountaineers. This region of the Gaurishankar area doesn’t lack fine mountain vistas.

1. Ramdung and Yalung Ri Peak Climbing Ramdung and Yalung Ri lies on the same routes that lie south of Na village in Upper Rolwaling valley. Ramdung Go (5925m) is a trekking peak that offers a stunning panoramic view of mountain ranges from Everest to Langtang and also a splendid view of Gauri Sankar and Menlungtse.  Ramdung Peak required technical support somehow depending on the snow level and condition of the route whereas Yalung Ri is more like a La pass which doesn’t need that much technical support. The best season to climb the Ramdung Go peak is from early October to late November.

Facts of Ramdung Peak Climbing

  • Start Point: Chhetchhet (1377m)
  • Finish Point: Chhetchhet (1377m)
  • Distance: 85-95 km Approximately
  • Time Duration: Min 17-Max 20 Days
  • Max Altitude: 5953m/19526ft (Ramdung Go)
  • Trekking Style: Camping during climb and rest with lodges
  • Transportation: Jeep and Bus

2. Parchamo Peak climbing Perchamo Peak climbing can be done in two ways. One from the Khumbu region and another way from the Rolwaling region. Those who are doing from Dolakha need to cross Tashi Lapcha Pass (5755m). The route of Tashi Lapcha Pass trek and Parchamo Peak Expedition is the same the only thing is that you need two extra days for acclimatization and summit Parchamo (6,187m). It required several technical skills. The view from the summit is rewarded with breathtaking vistas of Amadablam Expedition, Thamserku, Kusum Kanguru, Cho Oyu, and other surrounding mountains. After the summit, the route link with Khumbu, the Everest region, and finally end the trip at Lukla.

Rolwaling is also one of the routes which connect the Great Himalaya Trail (GHT) route from east to west Nepal.

gaurishankar trek

The cost of trekking in Rolwaling depends on many aspects like duration, facilities, means of transportation, crew members, number of trekkers in a group, etc. Trekking in the Gaurishankar area of the Rolwaling region is not expensive than other regions of Nepal because 80 percent of the area is done in tea house trek and in addition to that restricted permit is cheaper. Some treks don’t require restricted permits. Check below in the table of cost breakdown for trekking in Rolwaling and Lapche valley of Gaurishankar Area.

gaurishankar trek

In the Rolwaling area camping trek is recommended only for Tashi Lapcha Pass Trek. The rest of the treks can be done based on tea houses. If you prefer better service for your treks in Rolwaling such as quality food, soulful trip, and pure private trip. Then camping trek is the best option but it will be more expensive than tea house treks which require all camping treks supplies - camping equipment, kitchen implements, and food are all carried by pack animals like mules, Yaks, and horses. Even Porters are common in Nepal. All trekkers are accompanied by a guide, a cook, and usually at least one horseman or yak herder.

Teahouse treks in the Rolwaling region are getting popular due to the new road construction and good management of trekking trails. Decades back trekking was possible only with a fully camping trek in the whole Gaurishankar area. These days lodges and homestays are available in different villages. Like in Lapche valley you need to stay at Lapche Monastery if you are doing a tea house trek. There is no food menu available, you need to eat what they provide at the monastery for monks. If you are planning to do a tea house trek in Rolwaling and you think that the services are similar to Annapurna and Everest area then you are wrong. If you have experience of trekking in Everest and looking for a similar service then Camping trek is your choice.

gaurishankar trek

In general trekking in Nepal is popular in the spring (Mid-March, April & May) and autumn (Mid-September, October, November) season. Trekking to Rolwaling in Spring and Autumn is the best time as winter is too cold and summer the routes are difficult due to the monsoon season.

Throughout the Spring and Autumn seasons in the Rolwaling area, the temperature will range from 15°C down to -10°C and colder at night.

The Lapche valley is the only rain shadow area among all treks of the Gaurishankar conservation area. Even though the valley is beautiful in summer season but very few people travel during the monsoon season due to the risky trails between Lama Bagar to Lumnang.

  • Whenever you are planning your trek to Rolwaling never forget to check weather focus in advance and take a printout of the coming 10 days weather focus with yourself. It will definitely be useful when there is no internet connection.
  • It is normal to meet your porter in the teahouse where you will stay overnight. So, pack your necessary things in your own day pack.
  • The earlier you visit this hidden valley of Rolwaling and Lapche, it will be a more rewarding trip. Who knows whether the present tradition, lifestyle, culture, and its natural beauties remain the same as it or not.
  • Trekking in Rolwaling valley and Bigu Gompa is easy but if you are trekking to Lapche and Tashi Lapcha Pass isn’t easy. So, proper clothing and gear are essential.
  • Staying healthy during your trekking days is key to the success of your trip. So, take more hot drinks and eat well.
  • Acclimatization is necessary for trekking in the Gaurishankar area especially in Lapchi and Rolwaling valleys as you are walking in the high altitude mostly 4000 meters. Always flexible with your itinerary and keep spare for rest.
  • Don’t forget to choose the right season to visit this Gaurishankar area.
  • Choose a local trekking agency. Locals have a direct link with local people.
  • You must have your own travel insurance which covers helicopter rescue because chartering a chopper is the best and quickest way to rescue in the mountain.
  • Don’t set off without your permits. If you are traveling without permits and the checkpoint officer noticed you. Then you are compelled to pay the cost of permits and return to Kathmandu without entering flailing your dream trek.
  • Take your Passport and a copy of your insurance.
  • Hire an experienced guide who has good knowledge of the Region.
  • Don’t forget to tip your crew members because they never ask for it directly. If you don’t have an idea how much to tip. Normally tips are 10 to 15 % of their wages.

Rolwaling Valley Trek is a high mountain valley trek which lies across the western border of the Khumbu region. The name Rolwaling means ‘valley carved by a plow’ and its steep cliffs do indeed give the impression of a plow-carved furrow. The alpine lakes, high pastures, waterfalls, hanging glaciers, and the views of the snowcapped mountains in the backdrop make this trek a treat for those trekkers who seek for an off the beaten track adventure.

Rolwaling Valley Trek starts with your arrival in Tribhuvan International Airport, Kathmandu, from where you drive to Barabise following Araniko Highway. The drive from Kathmandu to Barabise is filled with beautiful sceneries of rural settlements and exciting landscapes. The trail takes you past rhododendron and magnolia forests, traditional villages, farmlands, and small passes. Many settlements with mixed ethnicities are reached during the trek, including the largest village in Rolwaling Valley—Beding. You climb through summer pastures to the village of Na, one of the oldest villages in Rolwaling, situated below the enchanting Tsho Rolpa Lake. Tsho Rolpa Lake is one of the biggest glacial lakes and is located on the base of Chobuje (6686m). There are several monasteries in this trekking route which reflects the values of Tibetan Buddhism. This region is also quite famous for its ancient stories passed from one generation to another, one of such stories being the sighting of the infamous Yeti. One of the highlights of this trek is the view of Gaurishankar Himal (7134m) which dominates the skyline of Rolwaling Valley. Rolwaling Valley Trek is an ideal trek for anyone looking for a solitary trek amid pristine nature and is willing to expose oneself to the diverse culture of the foothills of the Himalayas.

A quieter trail, less travelled than other trekking destination

  • A quieter trails, less travelled than other trekking destination
  • Quick escape to the mountain
  • local interaction with ethnic culture
  • Tingsang La situated at (3323 m)
  • Savour uninterrupted views of Gauri shankar and eastern eastern Himalayan range
  • Close-up view of the magnificent Gauri Shankar (7134 m)
  • Panoramic view of Gauri Shankar (7148 m), Melungtse (6908 m), Chombo Bumare (5960 m), and Number (6951 m)

This is a quick escape to the mountain with a close and spectacular mountain view of Gauri Shankar (7148 m/ 23,446 ft) and its Himalayan range. The walk from Dolangsa (2400m) to Jiri through the high alpine area with alpine meadows, oak and rhododendron forest and, scattered settlements of Tamang and Sherpa people is a very nice and pleasant experience that suits every age group. The trail is almost free of traveller and tourists.

Originally this route was chosen to avoid the motorable road to Lamosangu and Jiri. This is an almost off-the-beaten-path trek that takes you right to the mountain in a day. Because of the construction of a new road to the remote villages this area has become a quick escape to the mountain. However part of the road is still rough and dusty. After the insurgency ended for the first time we offer this trek in a new modified version to enable visitors with a short holiday. The walk in the mountain provides a close-up and a great view of the Himalayas, local interaction with ethnic culture and above all a nice pleasant escape to the mountain that gives a great view of Gauri Shankar Himal (7134m). The trek suits everybody. The trek offers a combination of spectacular mountain views, lust forests, Tamang and Sherpa villages and an almost traveller free route. The prominent hill in the proximity of the Bahrabise area is Kalinchok. It is a well-known place for a botanist. We travel by jeep to Bahrabise on the road to Kodari border and then drive gradually up the hill to Dolangsa (2400m). Our trek starts the next day walking steadily and gradually the steep trail to Tingsang La, a pass situated at 3323 meters. On the other side of the pass, you get a wonderful and panoramic view of the Gauri Shankar range amidst the pine forest. We follow the main trail that descends to the Bhote Koshi river and then again climb up to the ridge of Hanumante Danda. One of the trails leads to the cheese factory at Chordung (3600m). The close-up view of Gauri Shankar from the ridge is amazing and fascinating. Finally, we descend rapidly to Mali to stay overnight in the village. The next day descend further to Jiri and travel to Kathmandu.

We drive to Lamosangu and further up to Bahrabise towards the Tibetan border. Just south of Bahrabise is the confluence of the Bhote and Sun Koshi river. Sun Koshi is one of the major rivers of Nepal that flows south and then east to join the Arun river. Bahrabise is a crowded, bustling Newar, Chhetri, and Tamang Bazar situated at about 823 meters (2700 feet). Instead of walking the trail that used to take 3 days climb before culminating at 3323 meters (10,900 ft.) now, we drive to the Dolangsa village situated before the pass. As we drive up the trail passes through cultivated terraces fields and villages. Stone chautaras (resting place) and mushroom-shaped Banyan and Pipal tree. The trail after Parati is fewer steeps and gradually enters the large hanging valley where Khartali is located at (1676 m). We continue to drive past the village and move eastward along the ridge high above the Sun Kohsi river. The road then makes an ascent through a transitional forest to the ridge top where there is a small hamlet of Porteng (2286 m/7500 ft). After the ridge, the road enters oak and rhododendron forest and travel in and out of wooded side valleys. Below the walking trail and across the valley you find houses are scattered and strung along the hillside, but above that trail there is forest. As we turned around a ridge you get to see a view of the large spread out Sherpa village of Dolangsa. The spread-out fields yield corn, potatoes, wheat, and barley throughout the year. After k Dolangsa (2378 m/ 7800 ft) the trail climbs through rhododendron forests that are interspersed with kharkas (livestock grazing place) and highland meadows. We make camp in these alpine clearings.

The trail continues through the deep forests and meadows, before making a steep climb to the pass at Tingsang La situated at 3323 meter (10,900 feet). From the pass you get a great panoramic view of Gauri Shankar (7148 m/ 23,446 ft), Melungtse (6908 m/ 23,660 ft), Chombo Bumare (5960 m/19,550 ft), and Number (6951 m/22,800 ft). We descend a short distance below the pass to Thulo Tingsang – It is a large kharka at 3262 meters (10,700 ft). During summer this high pasture land is inhabited by many people. We continued to descend through lush rhododendron, fir and hemlock forests that lead us to Sano Tingsang. The trail then descends through more thick forest interspersed with maples and magnolias as well as kharkas to a stream at 2225 meter (7300 ft). The trail then continues along the west bank through lighter forests where monkeys can be seen occasionally and pass by cultivations and villagers. We stop at Amakot (1677 m/ 5500 ft) for overnight camp. It is a village of Tamangs and Chhetris village situated in a beautiful river valley setting. Across the valley, up above, is Bigu gompa that houses a Sherpa nunnery.

On this day we do a long but pleasant walk along the Sanguwa Khola (river) to its confluence with the Tamba Koshi. Just down the trail from Amakot, there is a view back up of the rock spire, Chomo Bumare (5960 m/ 19550 ft). The trail stays on the west side of the river for the entire morning passing through kopani and a few other small villages. Much of the route is in forests. The trail rises and falls over several small ridges and spurs until we finally make a steep descent to the Sanguwa Khola (1219 m/ 4000 ft). It has a nice lunch spot where you can wash clothes and take bathe. After lunch, we traverse most of the time on the east side of the river. The forest now has subtropical elements such as kapok trees, acacias, and dilenias. Further down the river, we reach a large suspension bridge located just before the confluence with the Tamba Kosi. We make camp near the village of Sidarti (1006 m/ 3300 ft). North of the confluence of Tamba Kosi is the Bhote Kosi (River from Tibet).

After we walk down Tamba Kosi river for about an hour we come across a wonderful chain link suspension bridge at Pikhuti Bazar. This style of bridge is fast disappearing in Nepal which is being replaced by cement and steel cable design. The trail now heads north up the ridge with good views of Gauri Shankar. We do a steady climb to Jaku (1463 m/ 4800 ft), a small Tamang village and stop for lunch. After lunch, we continue to climb the steep trail to Yarsa. The trail then becomes more gradual and contours to another Tamang village known Sarsepati at1768 meter (5800 ft). At this point, we are in the temperate forest with oaks and rhododendron. We find many ferns and orchids as we reach the Sherpa village of Serukapati situated at 2317 meter (7600 ft).

What our Clients Say?

This the first time in Nepal. As a Hindu guy from India, I want a trek which is adventurous as well as religious and spiritual too. Our hotel’s manager suggests Nepal Everest base camp Trekking company as their services are best. We went to a meeting with the Manager and he was very kind and informative. He provides all the necessary information and we started our trek on 4 April and ended on 22 April. The treks were 15 days with proper rest breaks. The guide was quite funny and informative. Only one word for this trip is “Adventurous” or “Inner peace-giving”. I would like to suggest you Gauri Shankar Himal Trekking to try at least once.

Ultimate Guide to Gaurishankar Conservation Area

Conservation Areas in Nepal , Destinations in Nepal / July 17, 2019 by fulltimeexplorer / 3 Comments

The Gaurishankar Conservation Area is located in the northeastern corner of Central Nepal between Langtang National Park and Sagarmatha National Park. The area is home to endangered species and offers spectacular views of Gaurishankar Himal (7,134m). Tourists tend to visit the two neighboring national parks without setting foot in the beautiful Gaurishankar Conservation Area making it the perfect off-the-beaten-path destination. Within the area you can find trekking trails, peak climbing, adventure sports, bird watching, glaciers, holy lakes, and a vast array of ethnicities. Here’s everything you need to know…

Note: Much of this information was provided by GCAP. I found different numbers in the pamphlets they provide compared to the information they have online, so I apologize if the numbers are off a bit.

Adventure Sports

Gaurishankar conservation area permit fees.

The Gaurishankar Conservation Area charges a 3,000 rupee fee (about $30 USD) to foreigners visiting the area. The permit is good for a single entry, however, you can stay as long as you like once you enter.

Getting There

Gaurishankar Conservation Area covers a massive 2,179 square kilometers. Major areas within the park have road access. If you are heading to Rowaling Valley, you can take a bus from Kathmandu to Singati Bazaar or Chhetchhet and walk from there. If you are looking to do adventure sports, The Last Resort includes transportation to Bhotekoshi in their tour packages. If you plan to walk to Everest Base Camp, you can take a bus to Jiri and start your trek in the conservation area. You can also hire a private vehicle like a jeep if you don’t want to take the bus since it’s a bumpy ride.

Tourist Activities & Attractions

Treks & hikes.

There are multiple treks located in Gaurishankar Conservation Area. They are considered off-the-beaten-path and generally see less than 250 foreign trekkers per season. Because these trails are less traveled, it’s best to travel with a guide. Some of these treks require camping.

Tsho Rolpa Lake Trek : Chhetchhet – Simigaun – Dongang – Beding – Na – Tsho Rolpa – Beding – Kyalche – Singati.  Check out my post on the Tsho Rolpa Trek Itinerary

Eco Lodge Trek : Barabise – Karthali – Dolangsa – Bigu – Loting – Laduk – Orang – Gongar – Simigaun – Singati

Cheese Circuit : Shivalaya -Khahare – Panipakha – Manedanda – Panche Pokhari – Tare – Ngeju – Lhachhewar – Kyama – Gumdel

Jiri to Lukla Trek : There are numerous routes to go from Jiri to Lukla. This is an alternative route for those who don’t wish to fly into Lukla Airport on the way to the Everest Region.

Rowling Valley Circuit : Requires a guide and camping. This route is not completely open, but I hear GCAP is working to make it a regular route in the future

Tashi Labsta Pass Trek : This route follows the Tsho Rolpa Lake trek, then it requires camping to get over the Tashi Labsta Pass. It takes you through Namche Bazaar in Sagarmatha National Park and then back down to Lukla where you fly back to Kathmandu. This is for experienced trekkers and requires camping and a guide.

Peak & Mountain Climbing

Some of the most popular peaks to climb in the area can be found below.

Ramdung Peak Climb : Reaches 5,925m and takes around 16-22 days

Pharchamo Peak Climb : Reaches 6,273m and takes around 18-22 days

Chekigo Peak Climb : Reaches 6,257m and takes around 24 days

Yalung Ri Peak Climb : Reaches 5,630m and takes around 14-18 days

The Last Resort which is located along the Bhotekoshi River is famous for being an adventure sport haven.

Bungy Jumping : The bungy jump is located over the Bhotekoshi River. You jump off a suspension bridge located 160m (525 ft) above the river. It’s the highest bungy jump in Asia and the 9th highest bungy jump in the world.  Read more about my Bungy Jump experience.

Canyon Swing : The canyon swing takes place on the same bridge as the bungy jump, however, instead of going down headfirst, you jump feet first and swing into the canyon below.

White Water Rafting : You can spend the day white water rafting down the Bhotekoshi River. I haven’t tried this yet, but some of my friends went and had a blast.

Canyoning : Spend the day repelling down waterfalls in the jungle. Some of the falls are over 100m high making this a fun and exciting activity. It’s one of my favorite things I’ve done in Nepal.  Read more about my Canyoning experience.

Nature & Wildlife

Forest Types : There are 18 forest types including rhododendron forest, lower temperate oak forest, lower temperate mixed broad-leaved forest, upper temperate mixed forest, temperate mountain oak forest, East Himalayan oak forest, Juniperus forest, shrub land, and moist alpine shrubs.

Fish : There are 24 species of fish

Flora : There are 695 species of flora including some threatened flora

Amphibians : There are 12 species of amphibians

Reptiles : There are 27 species of reptiles including the Burmese rock python

Birds : There are 252 species of birds including impeyan pheasant, shy drongo, red-billed blue magpie, as well as some endangered owls

Mammals : There are 71 species of mammals including the snow leopard, red panda, grey wolf, musk deer, Himalayan black bear, Himalayan tahr, arctic fox, and yak.

Yeti : There’s rumor of yeti in this region. If you ask the locals in the mountain villages, they may have a story or two.

Religious Significance

Gaurishankar Himal : It’s written in ancient scripts that Gaurishankar is as holy of an area as Varanasi in India. The mountain stands at 7,134m and has two main peaks. It’s been summited by less than 10 teams in history. The first team to summit made it to the top in 1979, and the last time it was summited was in 2013.

The name Gaurishankar comes from the god “Shankar” which is another name for Lord Shiva, and his consort “Gauri.” It’s said that the two of them danced on top of the mountain. The mountain has two peaks. The higher of the two is called Shankar peak while the second (7,010m) is called Gauri peak.

A cool fact about Gaurishankar Himal is that the time zone in Nepal is based on the location of the highest peak of Gaurishankar. That’s why Nepal has a different time zone than India and is oddly 45 minutes off from most time zones. This time zone was adopted in 1986.

Tsho Rolpa Lake : Tsho Rolpa Lake is one of the largest glacial lakes in Nepal and is the largest dammed glacial lake in Nepal. Since the water forming this lake runs down from the mountains, it is considered holy. Locals believe that washing their hands or taking a dip in the water can help them repent against past mistakes. It can also bring good luck and happiness to those who touch the water. If one does this during a full moon, the effects are even greater. This area is heavily Buddhist and it has been declared a no kill zone for animals. You can read more in my post about Rowaling Valley and the Yak Sanctuary there.

Dudh Kunda (Milk Lake): Dudh Kunda is another three hours hike from Na (in a slightly different direction than Tsho Rolpa). The path there isn’t as well worn, so we opted not to go while in the region. We did meet a few trekkers headed that way. This lake also has a religious significance like most lakes in Nepal that form in the mountains.

Monasteries : While I wouldn’t advise people to go out-of-the-way to see the monasteries in the Gaurishankar Conservation Area (unless you’re on a religious pilgrimage), you will probably pass one on your travels. In less than two weeks, we saw three amazing monasteries set into the sides of mountains. One of them was built by my fiance’s great-grandfather! How cool! Some popular ones are Bigu Gompa in Bigu, the Swallow Cave in Chilingkha, one above the village of Beding, and one just before reaching Na.
