It was a really nice show, and while I did find the first half a bit boring, the second more than made up for it. John brought his parents and husband, which was very sweet, and there was a lot of interaction with the audience. For me, the highlight of the show was perhaps when, after singing Silent Night, he sat back on a chair and asked the audience to sing a verse. The singing was beautiful and it felt like it really brought the people together. Most also turned on the lights on their phones, and it felt truly magical.

John Barrowman is the epitome of showbusiness! He is a whirlwind of talent, the ultimate crossover artist; he can sing, dance, act, present and on occasion he judges. He has mapped out a very successful career on both sides of the Atlantic.

It all began in 1989 in musical theatre and his debut West End role as Billy Cocker opposite Elaine Paige in Cole Porter’s musical ‘Anything Goes’. His West End to Broadway journey had begun and continued with leading West End roles in ‘Matador’, ‘Miss Saigon’, ‘The Phantom of the Opera’ and ‘Sunset Boulevard’ and with him reprising his role in ‘Sunset Boulevard’ in New York. His other musical theatre credits include ‘Putting it Together’; (Broadway), ‘The Fix’ (Donmar Warehouse) for which he received an Oliver nomination as Best Actor in a Musical. The National Theatre revival of ‘Anything Goes’ transferred to Theatre Royal, Drury Lane but it is his role as Albin in ‘La Cage Aux Folles’ which John regards as one of his favourites and won him the What’s on Stage Best Takeover Role. The classic song from the La Cage “I Am What I Am” has become his signature tune, with which he closes his live concert shows .

‘I Am What I Am – West End to Broadway ‘is a celebration of those career highlights but also a magical journey through the very best of musical theatre.

John Barrowman is a unique talent in the entertainment industry on both sides of the Atlantic. John’s time in the jungle in the ITV hit show ‘I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here’ was watched by an average of 11 million viewers a night, and he ended up a finalist with Harry Redknapp and Emily Atack. On the other side of the Atlantic John appeared in five seasons of the hit American drama series ‘Arrow’, based on the ‘Green Arrow’ comic books in the role of Malcolm Merlyn (aka The Dark Archer). The show has been a huge success all over the world. He subsequently guested as Malcolm Merlyn in ‘The Flash’, and has also guested on the CW’s hit historical drama ‘Reign’. Having guested on the hit American political drama ‘Scandal’, he hosted a major new entertainment series, ‘Sing Your Face Off’. He is currently hosting the ITV show ‘All Star Musicals’. Having competed in the very first series, John returned to ITV’s ‘Dancing on Ice’ as a judge for two seasons in 2020/21.His most famous television role is undoubtedly that of sci-fi hero Captain Jack Harkness, whose first appearance in the revamped ‘Doctor Who’ on BBC1 created such an impact that he was given his own spin-off series, ‘Torchwood’. The show achieved the best viewing figures ever on BBC America and has been broadcast around the world.

John Barrowman has revealed his disappointment about cancelling his UK tour due to the “increased costs of touring”.

The Doctor Who star, 55, was set to embark on a nine-date UK tour in February following the release of his album Centre Stage.

Despite having just announced his tour, the Torchwood actor confirmed that his upcoming shows have been cancelled citing “slow" ticket sales and increased touring costs.

Taking to Instagram, he penned: “It is with huge regret that we have decided to cancel the UK tour. Unfortunately, tickets sales in certain parts of the UK have been slow, and with the increased costs of touring it is no longer economically viable to continue. This is a decision that has not been taken lightly, and I know many of my fans will be very upset, as am I.”

He continued: “Personally I am devastated and like many people I have found the last years extremely difficult, possibly the hardest few years of my life.

“When it gets tough it is sometimes better to stop and re-evaluate and that is exactly what I am going to do. I am so sorry to all my fans. Jb.”

In light of his announcement on social media, fans shared their disappointment over the cancellation in the comments but thanked Barrowman for being transparent.

One follower wrote: “I’m gutted that the tour has been cancelled but can completely understand why. You need to do what’s right for you. Take care of yourself.”

“Very sad you’ve had to cancel the tour, but high praise to you for being so honest about the reason & not stringing people along with an excuse.

“I hope that the tour can be put on again in the near future,” another shared.

John Barrowman Announces New Album Ahead of UK Tour Dates

The album will be released on November 11.

pixeltracker

John Barrowman, one of the most popular musical theatre performers of his generation, will release his new album 'Centre Stage' on 11th November 2022 the Westway Music label.

During his remarkable career, John has enjoyed huge success as an actor, singer, entertainer, presenter and TV judge. But the release of Centre Stage, which sees John backed by The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, takes us back to where it all started and the genre that made him a star: musical theatre.

Released ahead of John's nine-date UK tour in February 2023, Centre Stage features ten of John's personal favourites from musicals such as Sunset Boulevard, Anything Goes, Funny Girl, The Bridges of Madison County, Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory and Godspell, amongst others.

The album's release is preceded by the release of 'Heart of Stone' as a single on 21st October. This extraordinary duet from the musical comedy phenomenon Six the Musical features the show's original West End star Natalie Paris as John's special guest.

Looking forward to the album's release, John said, "This album has brought me back to my first love and it was quite hard choosing the tracks. I didn't want to do the typical 'musical theatre album', I wanted to take you on a journey through my life, career and my passions with the songs I've chosen. I think I've done exactly what I set out to achieve, and I hope you will love it as much as I loved putting it together. I hope that every day you will be inspired to burst into song and help make the world a better place!"

John Barrowman was ‘humbled’ by support received after flashing claims

author image

John Barrowman.

Actor John Barrowman , 55, talks about his mental health struggles, his new album and never saying no to Doctor Who .

How’s life in Palm Springs?

There are the mountains and the swimming pool. I can’t complain. We’ve been here off and on for eight years, since when I started working on Arrow. It’s much easier to fly from here to Vancouver, where it was filmed, rather than from LA. It was always the plan that my husband Scott [Gill] and I had if I landed a job over here that was going to be for a long time. So when I got the job, I said, ‘It’s time to enact the plan!’

Are you in the UK much?

I come back when needed. I recorded my new album between London and Cardiff. And Scott goes over every three months to see his mum and dad, so we work it out. I was on one of the last flights out of the UK at the beginning of lockdown and midway through the flight they announced that American airspace had just been shut down, so we might have to turn back.

We were already over northern Canada. Scott was in Palm Springs so if they’d done that, I would have had to have gone back to our flat in Cardiff.

Are you excited about your new album, Centre Stage?

This is what I’d call my quintessential musical theatre album. It’s not just songs from shows I was in, the concept is the journey of my musical theatre career.

Corner Of The Sky was my go-to song when I was auditioning for shows back in 1989-91. There’s Pure Imagination from Willy Wonka. Charlie And The Chocolate Factory was the first book I ever read so it takes me back to the love of adventure and imagination. There’s a booklet that comes with it telling the stories behind the songs.

Lorraine Kelly

Did it make you very reflective?

There are tears shed when you sing certain songs. I wanted to do something different to what I’d sung before and friends of ours were visiting and suggested It All Fades Away from the musical Bridges Of Madison County. I’d never heard it and I fell in love with it. When I was recording it I got a feeling to go back to my Scottish roots and sing in my Scottish brogue that everybody always seems to be amazed at when I speak with Lorraine Kelly or any other Scottish person.

When I played it for my mum and dad, my mum was streaming in tears because it reminds her of her mother, Mern. I was in my car at the time and on the sat nav map, it showed a road called Mern Place. I had chills.

You said on Instagram you’ve battled with depression since the flashing allegations…

The amount of posts I got in response was incredible [last year he admitted to exposing himself while filming Torchwood and Doctor Who ]. I just thought, I’m just going to chat about it and, like everything, I want to make it a positive thing when you talk about something.

I got so much support and also people telling me their own stories of how what I do has helped them, which is humbling. Like everybody, when you have a problem, it’s good to talk to about it. And if that doesn’t help, then it’s good to take advice from a physician, if you need to go on medication. But then when you feel the time is right, like I did, I talked with the doctor and came off it.

I’m feeling fine, knock on wood.

Music is good therapy too…

I had good therapy sessions with my producer, during the entire making of the album. If you think you have a voice, sing. If you don’t think you have a voice, sing. Because singing releases something in you. I’m always wary of people who say they hate musicals. Who doesn’t like singing and hearing music?

John's roles in Doctor Who and Torchwood made him a household name

Captain Jack Harkness was a life-changing role for you…

Captain Jack made me a household name and I met so many wonderful people through Doctor Who. It gave me Torchwood, which was one of the most successful Doctor Who spin-offs ever. That took me to the States to film it there, which then led to Desperate Housewives because its writer, Marc Cherry, was a huge Torchwood fan. And then came Arrow because the producers were fans, too. So I do not look back at all on that period with any disdain or upset.

What about David Tennant going back to Doctor Who?

There was Twitter controversy as to who was going to appear, whether it was David or Ncuti Gatwa [the new Doctor]. Whoever it was going to be, the one thing we Whovians do is go on the Tardis for the story and the excitement of where we’re taken by the Doctor.

So it doesn’t matter who the Doctor is, we’re there for the journey.

Any chance you’ll be back in Doctor Who?

Well, if they asked me, I would at the drop of a hat. When I was asked to do it again with Jodie Whittaker , I was finishing a tour and the costume had to be let out just a little bit! We were staying at the St David’s hotel in Cardiff in the same room Scott and I stayed in the night of our civil partnership. I had the fitting at the window, which looked across the building where we have our flat, but also to the bay to where we call the Torchwood Tower.

The excitement never leaves me for that show.
