Why go: To see a glittering subterranean landscape in the world’s largest cave system

Covering more than 400 miles of underground passageways, Mammoth Cave National Park staggers the imagination. Strolling through these cool, silent passageways, you’ll see natural wonders formed over millions of years, from waterfall-like columns to shimmering stalactites adorning vast cathedral-like chambers.

National park guides run a wide variety of guided trips throughout the year. The four-hour Grand Avenue tour takes you through slot canyons, gypsum-lined tunnels and up steep hills – a journey that showcases the caves’ geological diversity. You can also learn about centuries of human influence in the cave on a historic tour, or see the caverns lit up by lantern on the Violet City tour. Be sure to book well ahead, as tours can fill up weeks in advance.

How to get to Mammoth Cave National Park from Louisville: The 88-mile drive from Louisville to the caves takes about 90 minutes. It's worth spending the night for a bit of uninterrupted stargazing – in 2021, Mammoth Cave was named an international dark sky park . You can stay overnight at the Lodge at Mammoth Caves (run by the park service) in pleasant wooden cottages surrounded by greenery.

Bardstown, Kentucky

Why go: To taste Kentucky’s finest bourbon at historic distilleries

One of the oldest settlements in Kentucky, Bardstown is a charming small town with Georgian red-brick architecture and a walkable center that invites you to explore. You can check out eye-catching locally owned shops and tempting food stops such as Hadorn’s , a third-generation family bakery famed for its cinnamon rolls and donuts.

Snacking and window shopping are fine preludes to the main event here – namely delving into the lore of bourbon whiskey. Bardstown calls itself "the bourbon capital of the world" and it’s hard to dispute that claim given the town’s staggering number of distilleries and bourbon bars. You can learn about the spirit’s past on a visit to the Oscar Getz Museum of Whiskey History , then go for tours and tastings at iconic distilleries such as Barton 1792 , Heaven Hill or Willett .

How to get to Bardstown from Louisville: It takes about an hour to cover the 44 miles between Louisville and Bardstown. If your focus is just on bourbon, you can book an excursion from Louisville with Mint Julep Tours , which visits three bourbon distilleries (they also offer custom tours).

Bloomington, Indiana

Why go: To see Indiana at its most eclectic

One of the loveliest college campuses in America lies amidst the rolling hills of south central Indiana. Spread across 1900 acres, Indiana University is an inviting expanse of grassy lawns, woodlands and creeks, with historic limestone buildings sprouting among the greenery. After strolling the grounds, you can spend the day taking in some impressive culture, from modernist masterpieces tucked inside the IM Pei–designed Sidney & Lois Eskenazi Museum of Art to the rare manuscripts in the Lilly Library .

Sprawling around the university, Bloomington is one of Indiana’s most culturally dynamic small towns. You can find outstanding ethnic fare at places such as Samira , a much-loved Afghani restaurant, or hear up-and-coming local bands at The Bluebird . Southeast of the center, take time to stroll the peaceful grounds of the Tibetan Mongolian Buddhist Cultural Center , founded by Thubten Jigme Norbu, the late brother of the Dalai Lama, back in 1979.

How to get to Bloomington from Louisville: Bloomington is a two-hour drive northwest of Louisville. Set out early so you can stop in at Brown County State Park along the way; 18 miles of hiking trails loop through Indiana’s largest state park, offering some fabulous views across to the hill-covered horizon.

Our city is surrounded by four national forests within a two-hour scenic drive, the largest US collection of historic buildings from the 19th century, and gorgeous distilleries dotting the landscape. We’re proud to be Louisvillians, but as much as we love our city, we all need to get out and explore a little bit from time to time. Owensboro, Kentucky

Owensboro is a two-hour road trip from Louisville and a perfect destination for January! As far as quaint Kentucky towns go – Owensboro has all the makings of a perfect winter getaway. ** Another great thing about traveling to Owensboro is that because Louisville is on Eastern time and Owensboro is on central time – you’ll get there an hour earlier to start your trip!

One of our favorite things to do in the winter is walking historic streets lit up with twinkly lights while snagging some coffee. Owensboro, Kentucky has one of the longest historical main streets perfect for taking a stroll with your loved one under the lights! As for what else to do out of the cold, Owensboro is home to a few great museums and great local Southern restaurants!

• The Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame – As music junkies, this museum is top on our Owensboro bucket list! Artists like The Stanley Brothers and Earl. J.T. Mammoth Cave, Kentucky

In the month of February, another great day trip from Louisville is to head down I-65 South to Mammoth Cave.

There are a few places in Kentucky that can take your breath away, and Mammoth Cave is one of them. Not only is it the world’s longest cave system – but it’s also the only internationally recognized UNESCO World Heritage site in Kentucky ! The first humans on record to have explored Mammoth Cave are from 5,000 years ago. While Mammoth Cave isn’t the only ancient human archeological finds in Kentucky, Mammoth Cave’s findings are certainly the oldest!

Best Tours at Mammoth Cave

With various ranger-led tours both above ground and in the cave – it’s a perfect day trip destination from Louisville. Since Ev is actually from the area, here is the low down on the best Mammoth Cave tours that we would spend our time doing again!

• The Broadway Tour – This is the best tour for someone who has never been to Mammoth Cave before. You’ll want to take this guided tour for an explanation of all the best parts of the cave, like the Rotunda, Broadway Avenue, and the historic ‘Tuberculosis Huts’. Duration: 2 Hours | $18 Adults, $13 Youth, $9 Senior Pass Holder, $9 Access Pass Holder
• Wild Cave Tour – This one is actually on our bucket list. Not only are only adults (18 and over) allowed, you’re also required to wear above the ankle hiking boots, and you’re provided with coveralls, helmets, knee pads, and headlamps. The National Park Service even lists this tour as ‘very physically demanding’, with long periods of time getting through tight crawl spaces and difficult climbing areas. • Violet City Lantern Tour – The best combination of hiking and history. Not only will you be carrying lanterns to see the cave by, but it’s also a true hiking experience up and down steep hills! If you’re interested in photography, you’ll want the Frozen Niagara Photo Tour or the non-guided Discovery Tour. Just remember that there is no flash photography allowed. There are many species of bats and other nocturnal animals that flash-photography would disturb. Leave no trace principles mean more than just not leaving trash behind!!

To make a full day when you want to do all the things on your mini road trip from Louisville, there are a few other things to do in the area! You’re also close to Onyx Cave , hiking, rivers for kayaking, and a ton of campgrounds .

Bowling Green, Kentucky

We know what you’re thinking… What is there to do in the tiny town around Western Kentucky University? For a fun, relaxing day trip from Louisville, see WKU’s campus cherry trees bloom, the Corvette Museum, Lost River Cave, and visit Amish territory. This tiny Southern slow-time town makes for a charming destination! (And we’re not biased just because Shelb’s went to school here or that Ev is from here!) Distance from Louisville – 1 hour and 45 minutes.

So what will you do on a beautiful spring day in Bowling Green, Kentucky?

• The Corvette Museum : Normally we’re not big auto- museum folks but one of the coolest parts of the Corvette Museum is that you can see the cars that fell into ‘the sinkhole’. Doesn’t it almost sound like some sort of Biblical tragedy? The sinkhole happened in 2014 and now they’ve left parts of it open as an exhibit ! • Lost River Cave : Just like it sounds – a river flowing through a cave is pretty amazing to see! You can even take underground river boat tours here . Address: 2818 Nashville Road, Bowling Green, KY 42101 Hours: Monday – Sunday (Tour times vary.)

If you haven’t gotten enough of racecars at the Corvette Museum, head over to the NCM Motorsports Park. You can drive sports cars or ride along with a professional driver on a racetrack in a sportscar! Would there be anything better than feeling the wind through your hair on a zero – humidity perfect 70-degree day in the Bluegrass? We think not.

WKU’s Cherry Tree Row

WKU’s Cherry Tree Row : It might sound silly, but every year in March, people come from all over to walk down the middle of campus and see the cherry trees bloom! ** If you’re looking forward to doing this – we highly recommend going in the afternoon when the sun sets around 6 or 7 pm.

Lexington, Kentucky

If we were planning a day trip to our favorite neighbor city Lexington, we would spend a whole day surrounded by the prettiest parts of the countryside here in April. Not only are the cherry trees still in full bloom until around mid-April, but this is also horse country.

When you think of Kentucky and its gently rolling fields, white picket fences, and barns bigger than most people’s homes… you’re thinking of Lexington. April in Lexington really is amazing because the countryside starts to wake up, and you’ll see fields start to turn that vibrant ‘blue-grass’ color.

What’s the best way to enjoy a leisurely day trip from Louisville? Plan your visit around horses !

• Kentucky H orse Park : More than just a place to see horses, the Kentucky Horse Park provides a campground and access to a truly immersive equine experience. Horseback riding, the International Museum of the Horse, horse shows, and ‘stall-side chats’ are all available during your stay or for the day-trippers! • Keeneland Spring Meet : We’re sure you’ve heard of Churchill Downs? Home to the Kentucky Derby and the ‘fastest two minutes in history’? Keenland is the smaller and more local version of Churchill Downs. You’ll spend the afternoon playing cornhole, sipping bourbon and gingers with your friends in brightly colored clothes… it’s really and truly a perfect afternoon!! If you’re looking to be in nature a little away from the city, head to the Lexington Cemetery for a stroll to see the cherry trees or Raven Run Nature Sanctuary .

Bernheim Forest, Kentucky

Speaking of scenic drives in Kentucky, Bernheim Forest is one of the most serene forests near Louisville. Typically when we’re looking for a little outdoor time in Louisville, there are a ton of city parks . If we’re looking to try a few harder trails, though, Bernheim Forest is only about 40 minutes from Louisville and a perfect day trip escape.

There are over 40 miles of hiking trails to explore so we’re going to break down our favorite trails:

• Elm Lick Trail – We hike this one every time we go to Bernheim because it’s so pretty! Crossing over and around multiple streams, listening to the giant bullfrog’s screech, and a few steep scurry-up-the-hill climbs, it’s far from a boring trail. There isn’t a ‘destination’ per se but it’s beautiful nonetheless. P.S. It may not sound peaceful to hear bullfrogs screech but we can assure you it’s a good laugh once you hear it! Duration: 5.0 Miles Difficulty: Hard
• Lake Nevin Loop – This is a gravel trail so really better for walking than actual hiking – but it’s so pretty! You’ll be walking around a lake which would be perfect after a harder trail like Elm Lick Trail. Duration: 1.5 miles Difficulty: Easy
• Millennium Trail – Millenium trail will probably require its own day trip from Louisville to complete. You’re also required to register at the Visitor Center before starting this trail so that the forest service can keep track of who’s hiking in and out on this trail. (For your safety!) Duration: 13.75 miles Difficulty: Hard

Even if you’re not a big hiker, there is plenty of space to stretch out for a picnic; visit the forest learning center and Bernheim’s Edible Garden & Research Building. Don’t forget to snag a picture with the forest giant sculptures from our Kentucky Spring Bucket List !

Spring Mill State Park, Indiana

Heading out of state, Spring Mill State Park in Indiana is another scenic destination for a day trip from Louisville. Spring Mill State Park is a preserved Pioneer Village from the early 1800s. You can take a boat tour of the Twin Caves, walk the pioneer village to see the grist, sawmill, and 20 other preserved buildings, or hike the preserve. If you decide to extend your stay – make sure you try out staying at the Spring Mill Inn !

The weird & wonderful part of this park is that it’s also home to the Gus Grissom Memorial Museum , honoring Gus Grissom, a local NASA astronaut? So after you’ve gotten your fill of the black from the past – head over to the museum and get a little futuristic!

Shaker Village, kentucky

Heading back into Kentucky for another preserved village day trip from Louisville is Shaker Village. Home to waterfalls, an incredible farm-to-table restaurant, and the largest collection of 19th century preserved buildings in the US – it’s sort of picture-perfect . Being an hour and ten minutes from Louisville means it’s also attainable picture perfection!

Here’s how to have the perfect summer day at Shaker Village: hike or bike the trails, eat, and listen to live music. Sans cell phone if you can help it!

• Live Music at The Meeting House – Free admission on the lawn near the Trustees’ Office Restaurant , with drinks and specialty cocktails available. They even have fire pits for those late chilly spring evenings! Fridays and Saturdays @ 6:30

Whenever we’re visiting these historic villages, the best part about them is how quiet they are. Chances are if you’re looking to escape for the day, it’s because you need to let your mind flow and relax. There really is no better place than some of these historic towns. The water, the landscaping, and the plush picnic-worthy grass.. take our word for it!

The Best Trails at Shaker Village

• Hike Fulling Mill Falls Loop – Starts near the west lot wash house and continues to the waterfall! Duration: 1.3 Miles Difficulty: Moderate
• Hike Shakertown at Pleasant Hill Trail – This waterfall trail has a ton of wildflowers on it! Duration: 1.3 miles Difficulty: Easy
• Shaker Village Shawnee Run, Anderson, and Heritage Loop – You’ll be able to pet horses along this trail. Duration: 6.6 miles Difficulty: Moderate

Holiday World & Splashin Safari, Indiana

As a kid, Shelbs went to Holiday World a ton with her family. Our family isn’t a huge fan of theme parks, but this is one park we’d go back to all the time! Holiday World is the best kind of day trip because you can totally escape. You don’t have to worry about a thing, and in our experience, your day is so much more pleasant than Disneyland, etc. With the well-maintained, super safe rides and the cleanest water park we’ve ever been to – it’s enjoyable even for adults!!

Our favorite water rides were always the Mammoth Water Coaster , the Zinga , and the Wildebeest Water Coaster over in the Splashin’ Safari. As for the park’s non-swimming side, we always loved the Hallowswings and the Thunderbird Steel Roller Coaster .

**Tip: If you’re just in the mood to relax – you can hit up the wave pool over in Splashin’ Safari!

Perks of spending the say at Hoiday World:

• It’s the cleanest theme park we’ve ever been to! Employees are constantly cleaning even pre-Covid.
• Non-alcoholic beverages and sunscreen are free all day long.
• Theme park and waterpark all in one.

Clifty Falls, Indiana

Clifty Falls is the perfect day trip from Louisville if you’re looking to spend the day outdoors in September .

It’s hot but not miserable during this time of year, so where you’re sure to get wet along the trails will be more fun! Usually, by this time of year, the water will have warmed up, and you’ll have an easier time in the water crossings.

If you’re the competitive type – you can also participate in the Four Falls Challenge of Clifty Falls State Park ! The competition is simple: you pick up your map from the Nature Center and take photos of 7 specific waypoints along your hike. The hike should take you 2-3 hours along the old railroad tracks, a 600-foot-long tunnel, and 4 different waterfalls!

Best Trails at Clifty Falls State Park

• Clifty Falls, Hoffman Falls, Tunnel Falls Loop Trail – You’ll see three separate falls and cross over the different trails on the official Clifty Falls map. Duration: 5.4 miles
• Tunnel Falls to Lily Memorial – This one has really steep stairs but pretty! (Good for those of us wanting a workout!) Duration: 1.5 miles
• Hoffman Falls Loop – Good views and shorter than the other hikes if you’re pressed for time! Duration: 0.8 miles

Huber’s Orchard & Winery- Indiana

We can’t tell you how many October’s we’ve spent cruising through the countryside to this hidden gem tucked away in Indiana. Huber’s is the picture-perfect day trip from Louisville that we all need! And we mean need… every year .

If you’re in the area, Huber’s is best for soaking in all things fall-fun in this region of the country. Imagine picking your pumpkins, eating pumpkin ice cream, and sipping on delicious blackberry wine from the winery? All while a cool breeze from the Appalachian mountains rolls across your favorite fuzzy sweater as you sip your wine.. you can practically feel the stress melting off of your body, right?

• Tours & Tasting Experiences – Loved doing a tasting and even took our giant German Shepherd inside while doing it! Granted, he just laid at our feet the whole time, but it was amazing! We are also excited to do the Starlight Winery’s entire tour, including seeing their still room. Something about a copper still makes us Kentuckians feel at home!
• Apple Picking – The most Instagrammable and actually fun activity in the fall! Perfect for girls’ groups or date days! Highly recommend going home and baking an apple pie when you’re done. The market offers their homemade ice cream for sale. Literally drooling at the thought of apple pie and ice cream as we write this!
• Pumpkin Picking – You’ll definitely ride a tractor and get covered in hay from the haybale seats – so don’t try to go crazy with your outfit . Just have fun with your day!

For us city slickers..

As Louisvillians, many of us are used to city life and don’t know what ‘country life’ feels like. That slower pace of life, where tractors drive down the road, and you get to go 20 miles an hour for a few miles? You will not realize how fast-paced your life has been until you’re starting at a tractor butt for 20 minutes. This kind of reflective break comes free of charge when you visit Huber’s!! And we say that with love because we could all probably use a little more of that!!

Berea, Kentucky

One of the prettiest areas within 2 hours of Louisville is Berea, Kentucky. Not only is the drive to Berea scenic, but some of the prettiest hikes in Kentucky are in Berea .

There really is so much to see and do in the mountains in the Eastern portion of Kentucky. You have Red River Gorge, Cumberland Gap, Big South Fork, Daniel Boone National Forest – all apart of the Appalachian Mountain Range. The Appalachian mountains are stunning, but to really explore them the way they deserve to be explored – you’ll need to break them up into bite-sized pieces.

Berea is always a good introduction to mountain life because it sits on the edge of the Daniel Boone National Forest, in what we call ‘the Foothills.’ The foothills of any mountain range are basically the mountains’ baby portions before you drive deeper into the taller, windier sections of the mountain range.

Best Hikes in Berea

• East and West Pinnacles of Berea – Sweeping, unforgettable views!! You’ll actually also get to see Indian Fort Lookout and Eagle’s Nest. All 4 are equally beautiful. **Please take water no matter what time of year! We saw people attempting this without bringing water, and that seemed semi-crazy! Duration: 6.6 miles Difficulty: moderate
• Indian Fort Lookout – This is basically the hike to do if you want to see views and be done within two hours. You won’t get to see all of the pinnacles, but the views will be worth the hike still! Duration: 2.0 miles Difficulty: moderate
• Anglin Falls – This is a harder hike but well worth the efforts! When you get to the falls, you’re rewarded with one of the most picturesque fairy tale scenes we’ve ever seen in Kentucky. Duration: 1.7 miles Difficulty: moderate

When you head to Berea in mid-October to early November – you’ll hit prime leaf-peeping time as well as some of the best views close to Louisville! If you decide to stay a little longer and need a place to stay – try staying at the historic Boone Tavern ! It’s so beautiful and perfectly embodies the spirit of this artsy mountain town.

Bardstown, Kentucky

Bardstown is Kentucky’s second oldest city, established in 1780, and has over 300 historically preserved buildings! Voted one of the most beautiful small towns in America by three different publications, we saved this one for last, and most certainly not the least!

When choosing a road trip from Louisville, this is the one we highly recommend in the winter because it’s decorated so beautifully for winter festivities! Not to mention that it’s the start of the Kentucky Bourbon Trail and has 7 different distilleries. This includes the incredible new age brewery the Bardstown Bourbon Company !

There really is nothing better than bourbon to warm you up in the frosty December weather!

• Bardstown Bourbon Company – Basically the most ‘ boujee ‘ gorgeously industrial distillery we’ve ever seen. It’s hard even to explain but watch our Instagram reel here to get a sense of how fun your day can be! Address: 1500 Parkway Dr., Bardstown, KY 40004
• Preservation Distillery – The only craft bourbon distillery of its kind in town. They do small batches, and this quaint setting is great to go off the beaten trail from where people normally go in Bardstown. Address: 426 Sutherland Rd., Bardstown, KY 40004
• Jim Beam – One of the oldest distilleries in the area, the Jim Beam family has worked in the distillery for 7 generations since 1795! Address: 568 Happy Hollow Rd., Clermont, KY 40110

15 Best Day Trips from Lexington Ky

Lexington is the second largest city in Kentucky and arguably the most interesting and authentic city to visit in the state. Found just an hour to the west of Kentucky’s largest city, Louisville, and just half an hour away from the state capital of Frankfort, Lexington is perfectly located to make for a fantastic base from which to explore the rest of the state.

The surrounding region is rich in local culture, and aside from the large cities nearby, there are many small-town communities to explore, each with their own unique history and attractions to offer visitors.

Many of the best bourbon distilleries in the United States are located within a few miles of Lexington, including the world-famous Wild Turkey brand. Even if you aren’t much of a drinker, a tour of a whiskey factory is an interesting cultural experience which will help you to see how the drink has become so embedded in local life and history.

Further afield, there are excellent day trip opportunities from Lexington to nearby national forests, to the birthplace of Abraham Lincoln and across state borders into nearby Ohio, Indiana, West Virginia and Tennessee.

1. Louisville

Louisville is the largest city in Kentucky, and it’s located around 80 miles away from Lexington. That makes it the perfect place for a day trip, and the perfect opportunity to visit the many attractions of this bustling metropolis.

The city is built on the beautiful banks of the Ohio River and in summer you can even take a classic steamboat cruise along the water. This is a historic place and there are plenty of museums in Louisville to keep you occupied for the day.

Baseball fans can visit the Louisville Slugger Museum and Factory to see the world’s largest baseball bat, and learn more about the city’s long association with this popular American sport.

There are plenty of distilleries in the city, including the Barton 1792 brand. If you visit in May and you might be lucky enough to catch the Kentucky Derby, a world famous horse race that meets in Louisville once a year.

2. Frankfort

Frankfort is around 40 miles away and lies halfway between Louisville and Lexington. This is a small city, but despite being just a fraction of the size of its two much larger neighbours, Frankfort is the state capital.

This is one of the oldest settlements in Kentucky and the city is steeped in local history, from pre-European times to its modern role as the seat of state government.

Frankfort has a sense of grandeur that’s captivating to experience, from the elegant designs of the grand Capitol Building to the charming, leafy streets of the city centre. This is the epitome of Kentucky, and it makes for a great day trip from Louisville.

3. Lawrenceburg

Lawrenceburg is just a half hour away by car, and this small Kentucky town makes for a great day trip that’s close to the city.

This is a must-visit destination for bourbon fans or for anyone looking to immerse themselves in true Kentuckian culture, because Lawrenceburg is home to the famous Wild Turkey Bourbon Whiskey.

This was one of the first places to be settled by Europeans in the region, and it has long held a place at the heart of the state’s history. Walking through the streets of the centre will take you back a hundred years, while a visit to the Wild Turkey distillery will take you on a journey through the history of one of the most famous drinks in the country.

4. Danville

While other cities in Kentucky might claim to be the most historic in the state, Danville can genuinely say that it’s a city that was here when it all began.

This was one of the first European-settled cities in the region, with origins dating back as far as 1784. Danville was also at the centre of local history and politics for years, until it was superseded by Frankfort, Louisville and Lexington in the 20th century.

In Danville, you can see the first state capitol building, the first state courthouse and the first state post office. It’s a great day trip for those looking to find out a little bit more about Kentucky history.

5. Versailles

Named for the famous French palace and city, of course, the small town of Versailles isn’t quite as grand or as elegant as the famous French town, but it is every bit as delightful in its own unique way.

Just 15 miles to the west of Lexington city centre, Versailles is the heart of both bourbon and horse country in the state. You can visit the famous local distillery run by the Woodford Reserve Brand, and many of the local thoroughbred horse farms that have produced many winners through the years.

6. Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historical Park

The Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historical Park is a protected area that has preserved the birthplace of one of the most famous presidents in US history.

This historical park is on the Sinking Springs Farm, where Abraham Lincoln was born and lived until he was two years old. Here you can find an intriguing museum that brings to life what the farm would have been like when Abraham Lincoln was born.

Down the road, you can also visit Knob Creek Farm, which is also protected within the historic park grounds. This is where Abraham Lincoln moved when he was just two years old and where he spent the next few years of his childhood.

Located an hour and a half to the south of Lexington, the small community of Corbin is a pilgrimage site for anyone who enjoys a meal of Kentucky Fried Chicken.

This is the home of KFC, where you can visit the Harland Sanders Cafe and Museum. The museum is dedicated to the history of fried chicken and tells the tale of Colonel Sanders and his fast-food empire which swept the world.

You can even eat in the KFC restaurant on site, which is steeped in fried chicken history.

8. Natural Bridge State Park

The Natural Bridge State Park is found to the east of Lexington and offers visitors a great day trip to the great outdoors.

This area of wild landscapes and forests is full of excellent hiking trails that will immerse you in the beautiful scenery. The highlight is the natural bridge that gives the state park its name.

This enormous sandstone bridge has been carved out by forces of nature that have left a huge, hollow gap in the rock. The gap is 20 metres across and more than 20 metres in height, and it’s a stunning sight to see.

9. Red River Gorge Geological Area

The Red River Gorge Geological Area is found in the same area of wilderness as the Natural Bridge, to the east of Lexington.

This rocky region of Kentucky is home to some of the most spectacular scenery in the state, and for adventure seekers, it’s an outdoor paradise.

You can kayak down the river, hike through the forest or climb the rocky canyon walls.

10. Daniel Boone National Forest

The Daniel Boone National Forest is one of the largest areas of preserved wilderness in Kentucky. The forest is named for Daniel Boone, an 18th-century pioneer who explored much of the state.

Encompassing an area of 8500 square kilometres, this is a vast land of beautiful scenery and outstanding landscapes, stretching across much of the eastern portion of the state.

There are endless day trip opportunities from Lexington and countless hiking trails. It’s likely that you will need to return time and time again to really appreciate the scale and beauty of this forest.

11. Hoosier National Forest

Found on the other side of the state, around 150 miles to the west of Lexington, is the smaller but equally beautiful Hoosier National Forest.

At 800 or so square kilometres in size, there are plenty of hikes to be made through this forest, while the many biking trails have made it a favourite destination for mountain bikers too.

12. Tri-State Peak

Found in the Cumberland Gap National Historical Park, the Tri-State Peak is a mountain that rises over 600 metres in height and that marks the boundaries of three states.

This is where Kentucky, Tennessee and Virginia meet, and a steep 1-mile trail leads from the base to a marker at the summit, where you are met with unparalleled views over all three states simultaneously.

13. Huntington, West Virginia

Huntington is a city in West Virginia. It’s a two-hour drive to the east of Lexington.

This busy city has a long history in the region and is well worth visiting to explore the many museums and the growing culinary scene. There are beautiful wildlife areas to the north which follow the winding banks of the Ohio River and offer visitors an exceptional taste of West Virginia’s spectacular landscapes.

14. Cincinnati, Ohio

Cincinnati is waiting across the border in Ohio, a journey of just one and a half hours by car from Lexington. Found on the Ohio River, the city is one of the largest in the state.

Visit the Cincinnati Museum Centre to learn more about the history of the region before exploring the bustling stalls of the local Findlay Market, a favourite for residents and tourists alike when it comes to finding some great food.

15. Indianapolis, Indiana

Indianapolis is the capital of the state of Indiana, and it makes for a long but interesting day trip from Lexington.

• Plan ahead – Distilleries are very busy, especially on the weekends, so make sure you plan your route in advance! A sample day might look like this: Start your day with a visit to Jim Beam at 10 AM, followed by lunch at Bardstown Bourbon Company. End the day with a sunset tasting at Angel’s Envy. Maximize your time on the trail by planning ahead!

What do we love about Red River Gorge?

• Hiking – Over 50 miles of maintained trails offer a wide range of hiking terrain. From easy walking paths to highly technical boulder crossing the trails in the Gorge provide adventure for all hiking abilities. Two of our favorite trails are (i) Double Arch and Auxier Ridge Loop Trail (5 miles) and (ii) Rock Bridge Trail (2.5 miles). • Arch Hunting – There is something special about hiking in the Gorge turning the corner and being face to face with an 80-foot-tall arch that was just hidden.
• Pizza and Ice Cream – After a day of hiking our reward is Miguel’s Pizza (a mainstay of the Gorge).

Pro Tip : Reservations are NOT required to enter Red River Gorge! Explorers should arrive early to secure parking spots for the best hikes. The Gorge is about 100 miles east of Louisville.

Red River Gorge is part of the Daniel Boone National Forest, so no charge to access this amazing park during daytime hours. However, at night, visitors are required to have an overnight pass.

4. Churchill Downs: The Fastest Two Minutes in Racing

Experience the thrill of Churchill Downs! Whether it’s Derby season or not, the Kentucky Derby Museum offers a fascinating glimpse into horse racing history.

Even if horse racing isn’t your style, the strength and grace of the thoroughbreds and the jockeys who guide them around the track are amazing. If you’re lucky enough to visit during the spring or fall meeting, purchase a general admission ticket, sit in the grandstand, pick a horse, and YELL at the top of your lungs for your horse to Go Baby Go!

And if the race season is not in session, all is not lost, check out the Kentucky Derby Museum located at historic Churchill Downs. The museum brilliantly brings to life the stories of the past Kentucky Derby winners, the families that supported these horses, and the trainers who live in the barns to unleash the magic in these majestic athletes!

Churchill Downs tickets are tough to get during Derby Week. Otherwise, getting into the track is affordable and open to all race fans.

Local Pro Tip : Stop by Waggner’s Pharmacy, located just on the edge of the track’s property, and see if you can score free tickets. Often, season ticket holders give away their unused tickets!

Located about 10 minutes from downtown Louisville, visiting Churchill Downs is a cool in-town adventure!

5. Step back in time at Keeneland Racecourse

Seeking a look back at the days when men wore a coat, tie, and hat to a public event, and ladies wore beautiful dresses and fashionable hats? Keeneland Racecourse is your kind of place. With its creek stone clubhouse, manicured grounds, and overall ambiance of yesteryear (in an elegant way), entering the gates from Versailles Road immediately transports you back to the 1920s.

Keeneland is home to the largest and most prestigious yearling Thoroughbred sale in the world. During the sale, the Lexington airport is home to as many private planes as the busiest private airports in the world. Visitors can tour the racecourse for tickets check here . 6. Explore Kentucky Horse Park

Still interested in learning more about Kentucky’s rich tradition of horse racing? Then, Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington is a must-visit! As a working horse park, visitors get up close and personal with what it takes to operate a facility at a world-class level.

The park is filled with statues serving as tributes to many of the legends in the sport like Man o’War, Alysheba (one of the only Derby’s I cashed a ticket!), or Sergeant Reckless (a military horse in the Korean War). The International Museum of the Horse illustrates the history of the horse and the advancements to mankind thanks to horses!

Kentucky Horse Park is located about 60 minutes east of Louisville. The Horse Park is open year-round but check the website here before visiting to plan your best day!

7. Experience a Moonbow at Cumberland Falls

Did you know that you can see a rainbow at night? On nights around the full moon and if conditions are right (few clouds, plenty of water flowing over the falls, bright moon), visitors are treated to a true world wonder…a Moonbow!

Kentucky’s Cumberland Falls also known as Niagara of the South is home to one of the few regularly visible moonbows in the WORLD! We have visited this marvel twice and had spectacular luck seeing a beautiful moonbow in September 2023!

Pro Tip : The human eye will see a white light arching off the waterfall, but your camera (yes, even an iPhone) will see the colors. Make sure to use a tripod and a long shutter speed for the best results.

Located about 150 miles to the southeast of Louisville, Cumberland Falls is filled with tons of hiking and exploring. Plan to visit for at least a full day. If you have time, two days is recommended. Within two days you can check out Harlan Sanders’ (e.g., the Colonel of KFC) home and first restaurant, an old coal mining town restored by the National Forest Service, and so much more!

8. National Corvette Museum

Do you have the need for speed? Don’t skip out on the National Corvette Museum. Located in Bowling Green Kentucky…home of the Corvette.

Car lovers, especially Corvette enthusiasts, come from all over the country and world to experience the history of this American icon. The Corvette changed sports cars in America forever.

Even non-car lovers will enjoy this museum. We visited on a cold and blustery winter day. This provided us with a fun afternoon learning the history of this car. We learned the current mid-engine supercar was hotly debated within GM for over 40 years! In my opinion, the latest design is the best ever made!

Want to get behind the wheel of one of these supercars? Then make sure to include a side trip to NCM Motorsports Park .

After satisfying your need for speed, stop into Cambridge Market for a bite to eat. Cambridge offers the best food in town, but we’re biased because Sara’s family owns and operates this awesome restaurant!

Bowling Green and South Central Kentucky, the Cave Capital of Kentucky , are filled with so many amazing things to do! Plan to spend a few days exploring this beautiful area of Kentucky!

9. Mammoth Cave National Park: The World’s Longest Cave!

Discover the world’s longest cave system at Mammoth Cave National Park! Book your tour today and explore the incredible underground world.

Over 426 known miles of trail make Mammoth Cave the longest cave in the world and it’s located about 90 minutes south of Louisville. Stop in for a tour on your way to or from the Corvette Museum .

Tours often sell out quickly, so get tickets online in advance. Otherwise, you can hike and explore some fabulous trails at Mammoth Cave free of charge. If you miss out on a ranger-led tour, you can take the Discovery Tour, which is self-guided.

Growing up, this was one of the day trip s my family took from Louisville. We explored the Historic Tour, which is about two hours and two miles long. The Historic Tour showcases many of the most prominent features of the caves. You’ll never forget the difference between a stalactite and a stalagmite again…hang tight to the ceiling, or you might reach the ceiling!

10. Carter Caves State Park

Boasting over 20 caverns, Carter Caves State Park has some of the most interesting caves in eastern Kentucky. X Cave is widely toured and offers amazing views of giant stalactites nearly 7 feet in diameter and 30 feet tall! Don’t miss the Pipe Organ, which “plays music” when the pipes are hit with a piece of wood!

Besides exploring caves, visitors can hike several trails including Three Bridges Trail, our favorite, and take in the sites of the natural arches eastern Kentucky is famous for! Rock climbing and rappelling are permitted in the park…make sure you get the proper permits and stay on approved routes. Boating and fishing in the 45-acre lake provide more fun opportunities to enjoy the park.

We visited during the Halloween season and the park was alive with activity. The campground was a fun place for adults and kids.

Louisville is about 170 miles west of Carter Caves. To visit for a day trip plan to leave Louisville early and arrive back late. Although a long day, this park is a crown jewel in the Kentucky Park network.

11. Squire Boone Cavern

Squire Boone, Daniel Boone’s brother, was a beast! An early explorer of Kentucky and Indiana, he was instrumental in pioneers settling the lands.

He fought for America in the Revolutionary War, where he was wounded 11 times in the Battle of Boonesboro. During his time in Indiana, Squire discovered the cave that became the present-day Squire Boone Cavern. Squire used these caves to hide from local Indians.

Squire Boone Cavern has unique cave features, including underground waterfalls and tremendous water flows. It’s estimated that 1,000,000 gallons of water flow through the cave daily, making it a living and growing cave!

The tour is an easy 1/3 of a mile out and back, with nearly 75 stairs to exit the cave in the gift shop.

Squire Boone Caverns is located a short 45 minutes west of Louisville. This is a quick day trip and the cave can be enjoyed in the morning or afternoon freeing up the rest of the day to explore more of Louisville. For more information about tickets check out their website .

12. Falls of the Ohio State Park

The Falls of the Ohio is the driving force behind why Louisville grew into a powerful city in the mid-1800s. A series of rapids in the Ohio River forced keelboats and riverboat captains to divert their goods and boats around the falls for safe passage.

While visiting the Falls of the Ohio State Park, visitors will learn about oceans that once covered this region and how the retreating glaciers shaped the topography.

Ever wonder why Indiana is mostly flat while Kentucky is rolling hills? The knobs of southern Indiana along with the Ohio River helped hold back the glaciers.

This excursion is perfect for an early morning visit. Plan to spend about half a day visiting and exploring the museum and fossil bed near the Ohio River.

The Falls are about 10 minutes north of downtown Louisville in Jeffersonville, Indiana. For the latest information on events at the Falls check out their website .

13. Urban Bourbon Trail

Bourbonism has ushered in a new wave of craft distilleries. Many of these distilleries are conveniently located in downtown Louisville. The best part is visitors can walk or Uber to these neat places.

Home to 13 urban distilleries, we have visited 4 of the 13. Each distillery has its unique history that shapes its brand and the whiskey taste profile. For example, while visiting the Evan Williams Bourbon Experience, we learned that bourbon whiskey grew in popularity in the 1800’s because the corn crop yields would spoil if the harvest was not converted into a useful product. Bourbon whiskey helped shape and drive both the local and national economy.

Pro Tip : Sometimes, hard-to-find whisky brands are available inside the gift shop at normal retail prices. For what it’s worth, I’ve not run across Pappy Van Winkle in the gift shops…maybe one day!

Bonus Tip : Grab a “Bourbon Passport” and collect stamps from all the distilleries you visit. After a few bourbon tastings, the list can get foggy!

Travel Tip : If you arrive by airplane, make sure you have your bourbon purchase shipped to your home. Otherwise, you may be gifting a bottle of your favorite spirit to the TSA agents.

Bonus – Enjoy an Evening at the Sauerbeck Family Drive-In

The Sauerbeck Family Drive-In is located about 20 minutes northeast of downtown in Buckner, Kentucky. The Sauerbeck’s are bringing back this fun way to watch a movie together! With a modern drive-in movie screen, a playground for the kids, and a fully stocked snack bar, this drive-in is a one-of-a-kind experience!

The drive-in is open year-round. As a family-owned and operated venue, they select all the movies they show. This is awesome! At Christmas, you can catch holiday classics life Elf, The Polar Express, and The Grinch. Don’t worry—they also play new releases!

Pro Tip: With tickets as low as $15 for a carload for retro-movie nights and $11 for adults / $6 for kids, this is the best deal around for watching a movie!

The Sauerbecks are in the process of adding a second screen that will allow movies to be viewed during the daytime!

14. Louisville Slugger Museum

Next to bourbon whiskey baseball is about as American as sports get. Louisville is home to the Louisville Slugger. On Main Street in downtown Louisville stands a giant baseball bat leaning against the museum. The bat is 120 feet tall and is visible throughout downtown!

Why did Louisville Slugger become famous? In 1905 Louisville Slugger made history by paying Honus Wagner (Hall of Famer) to use his name on the bat. They created a market and demand followed.

Famous players including Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, Jackie Robinson, Tony Gwynn, Ken Griffey Jr., and more have used Louisville Slugger bats in MLB games. According to the company’s website, in 1997, Louisville Slugger became the official bat of MLB.

When you visit be sure to grab your mini-bat as a souvenir.

15. Louisville Bats: Pro Baseball

The Louisville Bats are the Triple-A affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds. Attending a game at Slugger Field is a fun experience for the entire family. As a Triple A team games remain affordable for a family of 4. We enjoy taking in a game at least once a season.

Slugger Field’s design brings fans close to the action and all the seats are great. Families with young kids will enjoy the playground and merry-go-round located along the right-field sideline.

As an added benefit, the Bats often welcome players from MLB as they rehab or get additional reps at a slightly lower level. Ken Griffey JR played a number of games in Louisville over his career.

The season runs from mid-April through the end of August or early September. General admission tickets are typically easy to score. Check out the Bats website for all the details.

16. Take a Cruise on the Belle of Louisville

With the prominence the Falls of the Ohio and riverboats had on Louisville’s formation and growth, our city would be remiss not to have an honest-to-goodness steam-powered paddle wheeler. A variety of cruise offerings are available year-round. Cruising in late spring or early October is perfect for the weather and viewing the riverbanks.

In preparation for the Kentucky Derby, our city races anything that isn’t nailed down. I think it helps set the mood in the city for the fastest two minutes in sports. We race steamboats on the Ohio River. This race, as you can imagine, is far from the fastest two minutes in sports. But, it’s a fun event where the riverboat captains often have some tricks up their sleeves to gain the winning edge!

River and weather conditions affect the Belle’s ability to cruise, so check the website for the latest sailing conditions.

17. Tioga Falls and Buttermilk Falls

Waterfall lovers will enjoy visiting Tioga Falls and Buttermilk Falls. On the drive from Louisville, visitors will arrive at Tioga Falls first. The trailhead is located near Westpoint, Kentucky. For exact directions check out Radcliff Tourism’s website .

Tioga Falls Trail is located on a very light-used portion of Fort Knox…where they keep all the gold. I think that’s a myth, but nevertheless, it’s federal property so follow the posted instructions. This trail is out and back with the out being mostly uphill. The falls really flow well after moderate to heavy rain. We visited on Mother’s Day one year and really enjoyed a fun hike and celebrating Sara!

Buttermilk Falls is located about 30 to 40 minutes west of Tioga Falls in the river town of Brandenburg, Kentucky. Buttermilk Falls trail is designed like a lollypop…a long out and back with a loop to the falls. The out-and-back portion of the trail is uphill on the way out. Dogs are welcome on this trail but must be kept on a leash. This was our first official hike with our pup, Finn! For precise directions to the trailhead check out Brandenburg Tourism’s website .

18. Ark Encounter

How long is a cubit? Find out at the Ark Encounter . This is Disneyworld for Christians. We found the Ark very interesting and somewhat overwhelming with the volume of information. Each animal that boarded the Ark is described and illustrated in 3-D.

Noah and his sons must have been professional engineers because the details they thought through were intricate. For instance, an animal feeding system was described in such a way that the process was nearly an assembly line. Interior lighting and ventilation were considered. This was long before the Google machine so WOW!

The Ark Encounter showcases several animals in their zoo. Daily zookeeper talks are certain to educate visitors with fun facts about the animals in the zoo.

We recommend spending at least half a day visiting and learning. Complete your day in Northern Kentucky at the Newport Aquarium, our 19th choice for day-tripping from Louisville!

19. Newport Aquarium

Stay dry while exploring the depths of the ocean at the Newport Aquarium. When we lived in Northern Kentucky we visited the aquarium often. This is truly a crown jewel of the Newport Kentucky riverfront.

I love the bright blue fish that are typically found around coral reefs. The aquarium just completed a new coral reef tunnel. I find glass tunnels in aquariums to be super cool. The fish swim on all sides while I get to stay nice a dry!

The Newport Aquarium gets crowded so book your tickets early and be prepared for timed entry. Timed entry helps control the flow of guests and improves the experience. Check out Newport Aquarium’s website for the latest details on visiting!

20. Bernheim Forest

When was the last time you walked among giants? Probably too long ago! Visit Bernheim Forest for a one-of-a-kind chance to come face to face with giants created out of wood. These gentle giants stand guard over the lake and grounds of Bernheim Forest.

This park located a short 25 miles from downtown Louisville provides over 40 miles of trails for all abilities of hikers. There are several ponds and lakes to sit beside, soak up the sun, and just reflect in nature. As I prepared for this section my kids reminded me of the new playground that was just completed. The opportunity to let loose always entices them…we have to get back here soon!

21. Louisville Mega Cavern

Not just another cave…this is the Mega Cavern! The Louisville Mega Cavern was created as a limestone quarry under the city of Louisville. As mining operations wrapped up some business-savvy entrepreneurs seized the opportunity.

The Mega Cavern today is home to underground zip lines, a rope course, cavern tours (in an open-top vehicle), and our Christmas Holiday favorite Lights Under Louisville!

We visit Lights Under Louisville every year. Each year the Christmas light display gets bigger and better. With 2 to 3 miles of wall-to-wall Christmas lights, this place is sensor overload of light, music, and JOY! Since the cavern is underground Lights Under Louisville is open during most daytime hours! Find about an hour to fit this amazing attraction into your Louisville day trips.

Located about 8 miles from downtown Louisville, the Mega Cavern is accessible from anywhere in the city within 30 minutes or less! For tickets and information, check out their website .

22. Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill in Harrodsburg, Kentucky

Way back in grade school, we took a day trip (aka a field trip) to Shaker Village. I recall the drive out being spectacular among the rolling hills of central Kentucky. Our landscape is amazing.

Shaker Village has been restored to represent life during the period. The challenge of the lifestyle was not lost on me even as a fifth grader! The grounds include a Historic Center, Farm, and Preserve. The Historic Center showcases the remaining 30 or so buildings from the Shaker’s time on the property. The Preserve includes 3,000 acres of green space and trails to explore and enjoy nature.

It’s about an hour’s drive from Louisville, so it’s perfect for a day trip. Check their website for ticket info – it’s totally worth the trip for a unique glimpse into history.

23. Float Down the Elkhorn Creek at Canoe Kentucky

Last summer, we visited Canoe Kentucky on Father’s Day weekend for a relaxing float down Elkhorn Creek. Located about an hour east of Louisville in Frankfort Kentucky Canoe Kentucky is a quick day trip.

When we started our journey it was cool for mid-June and by mid-afternoon the air had warmed up! The cool water felt amazing. Along the way, there are several spots to pull onto the shoreline and enjoy some lunch or a snack. We like the waterproof bags to keep our lunch dry.

The greenery along the banks provided a beautiful, natural backdrop, making it an ideal escape from the city hustle.

On our first trip, we brought our dog, Finn, thinking he’d enjoy the adventure as much as we did. Turns out, he’s not a fan of kayaking!

But it was a different story for the kids. They absolutely loved it, and it was a fantastic way for them to get more comfortable with kayaking.

24. Abraham Lincoln Birthplace

I remember visiting the Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historical Park in Hodgenville, KY, as a kid on a family day trip from Louisville. It’s about an hour’s drive from Louisville. I recommend planning on at least 1 to 2 hours on the property. Unless you just stop in for a quick look.

I remember my mind was blown when I saw the size of the one-room log cabin. This was smaller than my bedroom. The park centers around this symbolic cabin, thoughtfully preserved inside a beautiful memorial building.

Visiting the Park helps visitors understand Lincoln’s life and how he formed anti-slavery views .

25. Explore The Art of War at the Frazier History Museum

Our family visit to the Frazier History Museum in downtown Louisville happened on a chilly January day, adding a kind of solemnity to our exploration of the past. The museum’s interactive approach to history really captivated our son. He was particularly fascinated by the extensive exhibits of weapons throughout history, which provide a tangible connection to various periods and conflicts.

As I walked through the museum, I couldn’t help but be struck by the sheer number of wars that have occurred over the course of human history. The array of arms and armor, while impressive, was a stark reminder of the many conflicts that have shaped our world. It made me reflect on the irony of peace – it seems to be maintained as long as everyone agrees, a delicate balance that history has often seen disrupted.

Located conveniently in downtown Louisville, the Frazier History Museum is a great place for anyone interested in history, whether it’s local Kentucky history or the broader scope of human events. It’s easy to get tickets, either online or at the museum, and they offer a variety of educational programs and live performances that make history come alive in a very engaging way. 26. My Old Kentucky Home

Are you looking for a change of scenery while touring Bourbon Country? After enjoying lunch at Mammy’s Kitchen (we highly recommend this local restaurant!) located on the Bardstown Square, take a tour of My Old Kentucky Home.

The stately Federalist-style home is just as beautiful today as it was in the 1800s. While touring, visitors are certain to learn how this historic place aided in the abolitionist movement. The song My Old Kentucky Home was inspired by Harriet Beacher Stowe’s novel Uncle Tom’s Cabin . For more interesting facts check out this landmark!

Enjoy a walking tour of Louisville’s Victorian Homes . Louisville is home to the most Victorian-era homes in the nation. With over 40 blocks of restored Victorian Era, visitors are sure to enjoy this stroll back in time.

Central Park is a centerpiece of Old Louisville and home to one of the longest-running Shakespeare festivals in the country. If you are visiting in the summer, we think you will enjoy an evening in the park watching a play. Be sure to arrive early to get a great spot!

We recommend taking a walking tour to learn about the history of Old Louisville. After your tour, stop by Buck’s for an old-fashioned bourbon-themed cocktail. But let me tell ya. In reality, Kentucky is a truly unique state with some rare world wonders.

Lately, I was reminiscing about my one long year in Kentucky  which was full of some cool weekend trips. During that time, I ventured to the narrow country roads near the border with West Virginia, chased lunar rainbow in Cumberland Falls and even explored beaches and swam in the lakes in the far Southwest of the state.

These days, while being stuck at home, I wanted to create this post. And share some of my best trips in beautiful Kentucky. Thus, I am absolutely sure that a lot of travelers will enjoy them as well.

Bardstown always makes it on the list of “the most beautiful small towns in America”. And there is a reason for that. This town is replete with elegant architecture, posh B&Bs, antique shops, quaint restaurants, tree-shaded streets, bourbon distilleries, and romantic treehouses .

Most travelers visit Bardstown on their Kentucky Bourbon Trail adventure. Here, you are able to immerse in all things whiskey and, if you want, dedicate the entire weekend to bourbon only. Yet, besides bourbon, there is a variety of other things to do and places to explore. 

During a year when I lived in Lexington, I have been to Bardstown a dozen times. And each time I had something new to discover. 

WHAT TO DO IN BARDSTOWN, KY 

Even if bourbon is the last thing in the world that interests you, still, it will be very fascinating to go on a distillery tour. There are 9 distilleries to choose from in Bardstown and many more around it. Each distillery offers tours and tastings and gives you a glimpse into an important piece of Kentucky history.

Visit Heavens Hill Heritage Center  or Oscar Getz Museum to learn about the history of Kentucky bourbon. At  Bardstown Bourbon Company,  take their Shaken & Stirred cocktail class where you’ll learn how to mix your drinks. And in  Lux Row Distillery to go on a tour and visit their brickhouse.

Barton 1792 , only a few minutes walk from downtown, is an old distillery working until this day and offering free tours and tastings. Willett Distillery also offers a great tour that covers the process of making bourbon – from distillation to filling the barrels. 

The Blind Pig Bourbon Market has a nice selection of bourbon, souvenirs, and gifts related to whiskey. 

If you feel you got enough bourbon, why not sample locally-made wine? Forest Edge Winery , Springhill and McIntyre’s Wineries offer an excellent selection of wines, great decor, atmosphere, and service. By the way, Forest Edge is located very close to a famous Jim Beam distillery , if you plan to cover these two places in one trip.

To soak up some history, you definitely need to visit My Old Kentucky Home State Park , famous for the historic plantation that inspired America’s first composer Stephen Foster. In summer, if visiting from June 11th to August 13th, there is a Broadway-style show on the grounds that tells the tale of Foster’s story. 

Additionally, don’t forget to pop into one of the four most important museums devoted to the Civil War . 

Among other fantastic things to do in Bardstown to keep you busy during the weekend getaway in Kentucky are:

– My Old Kentucky Dinner Train – a relaxing train ride with dinner through the Kentucky hillside;

– Self-guided walking tour through the historic downtown;

Bardstown is only 1 hour away from Lexington and 45 minutes away from Louisville, so yeah, you can easily stay in one of these cities. However, for a rare opportunity to unwind in a grand old place, look into one of many charming Inns or Bed & Breakfasts.

2. A TRIP TO THE LAND OF LINCOLN & MAMMOTH CAVES – For History & Nature 

With this getaway idea, I am inviting you to go on a weekend trip from anywhere in Kentucky to Mammoth Caves National Park. However, before you get to the park, visit a few sites on the way that tell the story of an extraordinary man Abraham Lincoln.

WHAT TO DO ON THIS GETAWAY

From Bardstown, take a New Heaven road (or Rte. 31E) to Hodgenville. It meanders through a deep forest to the Boyhood Home of Abraham Lincoln . In this historical place, a reconstructed log cabin by Knob Creek in a grassy valley gives a great perspective of Lincoln’s childhood life.

A few miles south the drive enters the small town of Hodgenville , which carefully preserves the history of Lincoln. The Lincoln Museum has exhibits that portray Lincoln’s life. By the way, in our experience, it is a wonderful museum where you get a feel of going back in history and learning a lot.

The town of Hodgenville has a very short but nice Main Street with a bronze statue of Lincoln overlooking the town square.

South of town, a barbecue restaurant “Lincoln Jamboree” offers great live shows with talented singers and musicians. Not far from it is the Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historic Park –  a beautiful countryside park with a replica of the original log cabin where the great president has been born in 1809.

TIP : Pack lunch with you and have at the picnic area in the park.

Visiting Lincoln-related sites and stopping for lunch can take a few hours of your time. So you can leave the Mammoth Caves for the same or the following day. 

If you are interested in exploring the outback and seeing unique Australian wildlife, make a stop at the Kentucky Down Under Adventure Zoo . It is a hidden gem place with a variety of unique animals that you won’t see anywhere else (like the red kangaroo and blue-tongued skink.)

The nearby Hidden River Cave & Cave Museum is a worthwhile adventure for everyone who would like to venture into an underground cave, zip line, and rappel. Diamond Caverns Resort in Park City , adjacent to Mammoth Cave National Park, besides beautiful and quiet accommodation, is also offering tours that feature thousands of stalactites, stalagmites, and flowstone formations.

3. A PEACEFUL GETAWAY TO VERSAILLES – For Horses, Farms & Country Roads

Known for some of the most picturesque countrysides and iconic centuries-old rock fences, Versailles, in the west of Lexington, is definitely one of Kentucky’s most charming towns. It is a true hidden gem that is perfect for unique girls’ weekend getaways , couples retreats, and simple 

Plan a trip here and go on a scenic drive from Lexington to Frankfort. I advise you to take an Old Frankfurt Pike Road towards Frankfort but return to Versailles to stay overnight in one of the most charming country inns. 

WHAT TO DO IN VERSAILLES 

First of all, plan to visit a horse farm. Versailles is surrounded by a rich landscape and has incredibly beautiful horse barns and properties. Many of the horse farms are homes to thoroughbreds that often win in the Kentucky Derby.

Go on a guided tour in Three Chimneys Farm or WinStar Farm . They offer custom and guided group tours on the thoroughbred industry and let you get a glimpse of the daily life of each horse.

On the scenic McCracken Pike road, from Versailles to Millville, you can visit the oldest distillery in Kentucky Woodford Reserve . It offers two specialized tours. One focuses on the architecture and history and another one solely on the bourbon-making process. Those who are visiting Kentucky from out of state and plan to be in Lexington only, have a great opportunity to learn about the bourbon production at the distillery in Versailles.

In the opposite direction on another picturesque road, is a Wildside Winery , in case you are up for wine tasting. Not far from the winery is Irish Acres Gallery of Antiques – an old converted schoolhouse full of antiques. There is a lot to look at and have a meal in a beautifully decorated restaurant downstairs.

If visiting from May to November, everyone in your family should love  Eckert’s Orchard . It reminds more of an agriculture centered amusement park with a lot of attractions. There, depending on the season, you’ll find strawberries, peaches, blackberries, over 30 varieties of apples, and lots of pumpkins.

SHOULD YOU STAY IN VERSAILLES?

Oh yes! While Lexington has a lot of options for any budget, a charming suburb Versailles with grassy fields has incredibly gorgeous farmhouses and bed & breakfasts.

Take a look at some of them: Charred Oaks Inn  or Montgomery Inn B&B . Also, The Kentucky Castle is a wonderful choice for a romantic getaway in every way.

4. a city getaway to louisville, kentucky .

The largest city in Kentucky, famous for the world-known Kentucky Derby and bourbon, has a lot to offer to couples visiting on a romantic getaway.

Being located at the intersection of the midwest and south of the country, many travelers often avoid Louisville, not knowing this city is actually really welcoming, super hipster and artsy, and great for active dates.

Even though Louisville is big, it’s also pretty compact and most attractions can be found in the Downtown area. No need to have a car since it is easy to get around on foot.

WHAT TO DO IN LOUISVILLE 

Go for a saunter in the Waterfront Park and cross to Indiana through one of many bridges. There is a bike rental by Big Four Bridge offering a range of bicycles if you feel like cycling around.

Wander through the gorgeous and historically rich part of Downtown – “Museum Row” on West Main Street. This street is home to nearly 10 attractions located next to each other and surrounded by Victorian cast-iron facades combined with striking contemporary architecture. As Louisville is built around the river, there is an opportunity for paddleboarding and canoeing. Endless Summer Paddle in Thruston Park rents out paddleboards, offers tours on the Ohio River, and sells coffee and baked goodies.

Don’t miss a walk (or bike ride) to Old Louisville where you’ll find a huge collection of historic Victorian houses where people live until this day. By the way, this neighborhood has some gorgeous Airbnbs ( like this one ) for a romantic stay. 

After spending some time in Old Louisville, why not go to the New one? New Louisville or as it is also called East Market District, or simply Nulu has cool bars, restaurants, breweries, art galleries, and quirky shops. This neighborhood is small but with the number of establishments, you can easily get lost and spend there hours.

Pop into Goodwood Brewing Co for great crafted beer and delicious food. Royals Hot Chicken is a fantastic place for a chicken meal. The nearby Quills Coffee Firehouse with Hi-Five Doughnuts are for those with a craving for cappuccino and sweets. But really, these are not the only places where to eat.

Nulu neighborhood has some of the best Louisville restaurants for lunch and dinner, coffee, and brunch. Just walk around and explore your options.

If the only city you get to visit in Kentucky will be Louisville, don’t forget to sample local bourbon. Some distilleries like Evan Williams Bourbon Experience , Rabbit Hole distillery , Angel’s Envy or  Old Forester  offer entertaining tours and tastings. Kentucky Peerless Distilling is a place for sampling some moonshine.

Louisville has so many cool accommodation options, including those for romantic stays.

5. A LONG WEEKEND GETAWAY TO COVINGTON, KENTUCKY 

Covington is the northernmost town in Kentucky that borders Cincinnati. This town is small but cozy. It is mainly known for historic neighborhoods, numerous art galleries, and popular events like Mainstrasse Oktoberfest, Mardi Gras, The Original Goetta Festival, and others. 

Escape here to listen to great jazz in Dee Felice Cafe , catch a show at the Madison Theater or a classical music concert at the Kentucky Symphony Orchestra , and   taste traditional German food in Wunderbar . And another reason to visit Covington is Cincinnati where you can get by crossing a Suspension Bridge. 

WHAT TO DO IN COVINGTON

Before we go through the list of attractions in Covington, here is one detail. Getaway to this destination will suit all types of travelers but most of all families with kids. And for many reasons.

First of all, before arriving here, if driving from Lexington (and even Louisville with a quick detour), make a stop at the Ark Encounter .  This is a unique exhibit with a replica of Noah’s Ark which was built according to the dimensions in the Bible.

It is definitely a great place to expand your knowledge about the Ark and life on it during the flood. Even if you are not religious, this project will surely impress! If visiting with family, you can literally spend an entire day here.

Once in Covington, make sure to stop by a beautiful Devou Park. It’s a nice spot for a breezy walk and a wonderful view of downtown Cincinnati. For crafted beers on tap, go to Braxton Brewing Company which welcomes everyone. Besides beer, they have food, occasional live music, tours and a rooftop bar with pretty views.  

Foodies and history lovers will definitely appreciate a  cultural food tour of a beautiful historic neighborhood MainStrasse Village.  And, kids will enjoy the Aquarium , although I personally think that Cincinnati Zoo has more to offer (and for a lower price.) 

WHERE TO STAY IN COVINGTON

Hotels in Covington are pretty pricey. Check out this super cozy budget-friendly house near the historic neighborhood !

6. A RIVERSIDE GETAWAY TO MADISON, INDIANA

This can be a cool getaway for couples from Kentucky who also would love to combine it with a road trip. Madison lies at the heart of the Ohio River Scenic Byway , so you could easily see a few other pretty towns as well. Yet, at the end of the day, return to Madison and spend a night in one of the romantic B&Bs.

If you have been to Mansfield, Ohio , then you’ll find a few similarities between these two towns.

WHAT TO DO IN MADISON 

This charming historic part of Madison is famous for three things. First – for historic houses such as Sullivan House , Lanier Mansion , and Schofield House . Second – for Main Street full of restaurants, artsy shops, chocolate and coffee places, and antique stores. And third – for the feel. 

Madison’s cozy streets with riverfront and downtown area are full of romantic charm. There is a special spirit in this town that makes you feel comfortable and relaxed from the first few minutes.

During your romantic escape, visit one of the wineries (as Thomas Family Winery , Lanthier Winery , and Vineyards Estate Winery ,) go for a walk along the Milton Madison Bridge from Madison to Milton Kentucky, get a relaxing massage  (don’t forget to schedule an appointment) and treat yourself with handmade artisan chocolates at Cocoa Safari Chocolates .

Also, head to the nearby Clifty Falls State Park for amazing hiking trails and outstanding views.

Weekend Getaways Near Louisville, KY

7. a trip from kentucky to corydon, indiana – for wine, history, music & art.

The small town of Corydon, which became the first capital of Indiana at the beginning of the 19th century, at first sight, doesn’t seem to have a lot to offer. While this is true that the town itself is somewhat unremarkable, there are still a few attractions that can keep you busy during the entire weekend.

Before you even get to Corydon, if driving from Louisville, make a stop at the Turtle Run Winery . There, you’ll find homemade wines, live music on weekends (weather permitting), and a great ambiance.

Once in Corydon, spend some time in town. There, go on a quick walk and visit Corydon Capitol State’s historic site (basically Indiana’s birthplace.) Its location is near the town square. Nearby are the Battle of Corydon park to learn how our forefathers lived and Constitution Elm – a place where the Indiana Constitution was drafted.

Among other must-visit places are glassmaking craftsmen in Zimmerman Art Glass Shop , Cave Country Canoes , and Corydon Jamboree – an amazing venue to enjoy live country and gospel music.

Also, if you have time, visit a nearby town Leavenworth which is famous for its peaceful atmosphere and mind-blowing views of the river. The Overlook Restaurant is that place where you can enjoy the food and spectacular views.

Since all of these attractions are located close to Louisville, you may want to go there on a day trip. We were visiting on a day trip from Lexington and felt like we could easily spend another day in the area.

8. COUPLE’S GETAWAY TO BRANDENBURG, KENTUCKY – For Romance & Luxury 

One of the reasons why I wanted to include Brandenburg on my list is an elegant romantic Inn that is a great vacation spot near Louisville. This small luxury-style B&B in a farming community is not only a wonderful place to stay but to unplug and have a peaceful weekend.

In fact, Brandenburg is only 25 minutes drive to Corydon mentioned in the getaway above. So if you feel like combining these two destinations on the same weekend trip, please do so. However, I still wanted to make them separate getaways because the amount of activities is endless. 

THINGS TO DO IN BRANDENBURG, KENTUCKY 

There isn’t much to do in the town but there are plenty of activities on the farm and in nearby areas. On the farm, you can go fishing, boating, swimming in one of the ponds, feeding the goats and alpacas, or hanging out at the pool all day long. 

Other things to do in the Brandenburg area are a famous Fort Knox with nearby Boundary Oak Distillery and Sounders Springs Nature Reserve . They are only a 30-minute drive away. 

To the north of town, around 15 minutes across the border to Indiana, is Squire Boone Caverns – an interesting place for both children and adults. Here, you can go on a guided tour around underground caverns, and visit a small theme park with pioneer-era buildings and hayrides. The caverns, a complex of rooms and passageways contain rimstone dams, impressive stalactites, and stalagmites.

Brandenburg as a town has a River Front park with a few walking trails and a Jailhouse which was turned into a pizza parlor (call ahead and book a jail cell for lunch or dinner) where you can dine and have a tour of the historic jailhouse (very interesting experience!)

9. A WEEKEND TRIP TO BLOOMINGTON & MONROE LAKE – For a College Town, Culture & Outdoor Adventure

Here is another weekend getaway from Kentucky to Southern Indiana which, by the way, is among the most romantic getaways in the Midwest . This time I offer you to go on a trip to an energetic college town, known for its wide selection of shops, restaurants, beautiful architecture, art, and local wines.

The main reason why Bloomington is famous is because of the historically rich Indiana University. The campus with ivy-draped halls and dormitories is simply gorgeous. It has quaint trails for walking and many areas to relax and learn about history.

For example, some fascinating historic places to visit are the IU Auditorium and Indiana University Art Museum . The first one is famous for murals on the walls and ceilings as well as various performances. And the second one boasts many works of Picasso, Rodin, Warhol, and other artists. If you happen to visit in April, the campus hosts a bicycle race called the Little 500. 

However, Indiana University is not the only reason why to visit this area.

Just north of town on State Road 37, you’ll find and oldest winery in Indiana Oliver Winery . Besides their award-winning wines, wine tastings, local artisan music, and lovely views you can also take a stroll around the lake. It is a lovely area to enjoy time with friends and family outdoors on their convenient seating.

Southeast of Bloomington lies Monroe Lake . This large reservoir has lake cabin rentals and many popular spots for swimming, camping, and boating. Hardin Ridge and Paynetown  recreation areas are the most popular for those who would like to get closer to nature.

OTHER PLACES TO VISIT IN BLOOMINGTON AREA:

If you come not for a day but for a weekend getaway, you’ll have more time to explore other places in the Bloomington area. And there are quite a few of them. You can even go on a road trip through Southern Indiana.

So, before leaving Bloomington, make a stop at the Tibetan Mongolian Buddhist Cultural Center. It’s a peaceful educational place excellent for meditation and achieving a calm state of mind.

Afterward, follow a scenic State Road 46 toward Nashville . Dipping through the hills and hollows of rural Brown County, it opens up beautiful views.

Nashville  is a small town full of antique shops, craft stores, and art galleries. Stop at the Big Woods the Original  and taste their famous beer cheese pretzels, chicken asparagus sandwich, and burgers. Besides those, they also have very good soups of the day, pizza, fried rice, and more dishes on the menu. 

Brown County Playhouse and Melchior Marionette Theater (located next to each other) are nice small community places for concerts, shows, and performances. 

If visiting this area in June, expect to see the Bill Monroe Memorial Bean Blossom Bluegrass Festival. It is the oldest festival in the world dedicated to Monroe’s bluegrass songs.

Besides Nashville, visit T.C. Steele State Historic Site , Brown County State Park , Yellowwood State Forest , and ghost town Story .

WHERE TO STAY IN BLOOMINGTON & NEARBY:

Depending on the goal of your trip, I personally would love to recommend a few different places.

Fourwinds Lakeside Inn – a gorgeous property with fantastic views of Monroe Lake, a convenient location, and an excellent marina atmosphere. Suits families with children and couples.

Grant Street Inn – a quaint and classy Inn within walking distance of downtown, a farmers market, and many restaurants. This is a privately owned hotel, therefore you can expect to have a very unique experience.

Wampler House Boutique B&B  – this is a romantic extravagant Inn in the heart of Bloomington downtown. Everything feels just right here and you’ll surely have an unforgettable stay!

For adventure seekers, I highly advise checking a country bed-and-breakfast Story Inn . It is a bit pricey but very unique and quaint! The Inn offers fine dining, lodging, and events throughout the year. If you can’t stay overnight, at least pay a visit during the day, have a meal, and walk around the area. It is surrounded by beautiful countryside.

Where to take a day trip in northern kentucky.

One of the pleasures of travelling is discovering unique places to go for a day trip. Whether it’s just an hour away, or will actually take the whole day, a drive to a nearby attraction can feel like a vacation within a vacation. Or a vacation within a stay cation if you’re seeing the sights within a few hours drive from where you live. As we’ve mentioned in previous articles, like our recent post about the Northern Kentucky Back Roads Wine Trail , there are many such almost-hidden gems in the Northern Kentucky region.  Here are a few more:

Rabbit Hash

The small town of Rabbit Hash, Kentucky is only 45 minutes away from downtown Cincinnati, so it almost doesn’t qualify as a day trip. But we’re listing it here because as one of Southern Living’s “Best Tiny Towns in the U.S.” you definitely don’t want to miss it! The always Instagrammable General Store is just one of the attractions of Rabbit Hash—there’s also a local winery, Verona Vineyards, an antiques shop, and a great local BBQ spot, The Scalded Hog. Oh, and we almost forgot to mention that the whole town is on the National Register of Historic Places. It’s likely you’ll get to meet the mayor when you visit, as long as you’re a dog lover. Yes, the mayor of Rabbit Hash is a dog, and has been since 1998.

Big Bone Lick State Park

Just 15 minutes down the road from Rabbit Hash you’ll find a Kentucky state park that’s not only chock-full of history, it also brims with prehistoric finds—Big Bone Lick State Park, in Florence, KY. As you drive through one of the entrances you’ll note that it’s also known as the “Birthplace of American Vertebrate Paleontology.” Famed explorer Meriwether Lewis, of Lewis and Clark, spent weeks on this site, discovering prehistoric bones. So many skeletons of prehistoric animals were discovered here that it was named for their “big bones.” There’s a new museum on-site featuring them, and some big-boned contemporary creatures—American Bison—roam the park. Like all the state parks in Kentucky, it’s also beautiful, perfect for refreshing hikes or camping.

What do you think of when you think of Kentucky? For most people, two things immediately spring to mind—bourbon and race horses. We’ve discussed bourbon and will likely discuss it again, but if you’re interested in getting an up-close view of the horses of Kentucky, Georgetown is the place to go. The Kentucky Horse Park is here, “the only park of its kind in the world.” It’s a working horse farm as well as a competitive venue, educational facility, museum, and even theme park! You can meet thoroughbred legends, learn about the history of horse racing, go horseback riding, see the powerful draft horses in the Big Barn, and more. But that’s not all there is to Georgetown—be sure to visit the charming downtown shops and cafes, and if you’re a craft beer fan, stop by their local brewery, Country Boy.

You can get to Maysville, KY in about an hour’s drive from the Cincinnati area, and like most drives in Kentucky, it’s a beautiful, scenic one-- this time winding along the Ohio river. You’ll pass through lovely Augusta, Kentucky on the way; if you’re a fan of George Clooney and his family, be sure to stop there to check out the Rosemary Clooney museum.  Maysville is rich with history and charm. You can tour the National Underground Railroad Museum, take in a variety of artistic works in the local galleries, see a jaw-dropping collection of miniatures at the Kentucky Gateway Museum Center, and get your Line Guide stamped for The B-Line . That’s right! Maysville is on the Northern Kentucky bourbon tour, The B-Line. It’s a town steeped in bourbon history—some even state that Maysville is the “birthplace of bourbon.” It’s home to two of the stops on The B-Line: the restaurant Chandler’s on Market and the family owned Old Pogue Distillery.

If you love bourbon, you'll want to check out the Kentucky Bourbon Festival in September, or Bardstown's Four Roses Distillery, Heaven Hill Distilleries Bourbon Heritage Center, Historic Tom Moore Distillery, Jim Beam American Outpost, and Maker's Mark Distillery year round. Mammoth Cave (Cave City)

Mammoth Cave , located in Cave City at just under 100 miles and an hour and a half from Downtown Louisville, is a wonderful Kentucky attraction. Visitors to Cave City can take several different trips through Mammoth Cave, they can swim, camp, fish, and boat in Barren River State Resort Park, and they can go horseback riding, explore museums, and go golfing. There is enough to do in Cave City to fill a weekend, so it's lucky for us here in Louisville that Cave City is such a short drive away. You'll definitely want to go back. ​

French Lick, Indiana

French Lick was always a big attraction for Louisville residents because of Patoka Lake and the natural hot springs found in the area, but it is even more so now that French Lick sports a casino and world-class resort. French Lick is approximately 58 miles and one hour and 15 minutes from Downtown Louisville. Additionally, both Holiday World and Spring Mill are just a short drive from French Lick. While you're there, you'll want to check out the resort and casino, Big Splash Adventure Indoor Water Park , and the horse stables.

At 80 miles and approximately an hour and fifteen minutes from Downtown Louisville, a trip to Lexington is a great way to escape the city for a while. While you're there, check out Kentucky Horse Park, Keeneland Race Course, and Shaker Village, or visit one of Lexington's major distilleries: Woodford Reserve, Buffalo Trace, Four Roses, and Wild Turkey.

Holiday World

Holiday World is typically less crowded than the other nearby theme parks and the drive there isn't bad at all. Holiday World is just over 70 miles and one hour and fifteen minutes from Downtown Louisville. Some of the theme park's most popular features are Pilgrim's Plunge (the world's tallest water ride), one of the most popular wooden roller coasters in the world, and Splashin' Safari, Holiday World's gigantic water park.

Frankfort, Kentucky

At about 50 miles and one hour from Louisville, Frankfort is a great day trip to make if you're interested in Kentucky government and history. Frankfort is Kentucky's state capital and the site of many state historic buildings, such as the old governor's mansion, the Frank Lloyd Wright-Zigler House, and the liberty hall historic site. Additionally, Frankfort is home to the Buffalo Trace distillery, Daniel Boone's grave, and the Kentucky Vietnam Veteran's Memorial, among other interesting historic state attractions.

Spring Mill State Park, Indiana

Spring Mill isn't really all that far away from Louisville in distance (only 64 miles), but it takes about an hour and a half to get there because you have to take Indiana highways through a lot of small towns all the way there. However, Spring Mill is definitely worth the trip. At Spring Mill you can take a guided boat tour of the Twin Caves, you can hike, you can swim in the park's huge pool, and you can camp. There's also an inn if you decide to stay overnight.

Explore the Old Athens Lunatic Asylum

The eerie mysteries that shroud the Athens Lunatic Asylum have intrigued and peaked curiosities for years. Now known as The Ridges, the Athens Lunatic Asylum operated from 1874 to 1993. The Asylum saw various patients, including civil war veterans, children, and those deemed mentally unwell.

It was meant to only house 550 patients when it opened; the Athens Lunatic Asylum surpassed nearly 2,000 patients by the 1950s. Later, small housing units were built to create small communities for patients to live in.

The hospital became known for its infamous lobotomy procedures along with electroshock therapy, hydrotherapy, and the use of psychotropic drugs.  I would recommend  pairing this with a progressive brewery making this a great couple or friends weekend getaway from Cincinnati

Discover The Historic Side Of Lexington

A great day trip from Cincinnati is Lexington, KY. Lexington is home to plenty of fascinating history. With several of the historic homes and places, visitors to the area can go on a self-guided walk through downtown Lexington to scout out these historic landmarks.

Brochures featuring The Lexington Walk can be found online or at the Lexington Visitors Center.  While it is highly encouraged to walk the route, it is also drivable.  Discover the home of Mary Todd Lincoln, historic churches, the Hunt-Morgan House, and more. Hike The Trails Of Red River Gorge

A great outdoor adventure awaits at a breathtaking Red River Gorge. This two-hour drive from Cincinnati is well worth it for those seeking to exchange the sounds of the city for those of nature. The gorge is known for its natural bridge, jaw-dropping view, and beautiful trails.

A well-kept secret of Preble County, Ohio, has been preserving eight historic covered bridges. Many of which are still in use today.  Each covered bridge has a story to tell, or should I say each person in Preble County has a story about a covered bridge.

Many bridges have overcome fires, tornados, and oversized trucks, but the more romantic side of the covered bridges captures visitors’ attention. Take a day to explore all of the covered bridges in Preble County .  Nearby Hueston Woods is a great spot to stay the night or do a little hiking.

However, for those seeking a quick peek, a short hike from the designated parking area will leave you with a beautiful view of the cave.  This natural wonder is fun to visit anytime; however, try going in the winter months for a less crowded and more serene visit. The frozen waterfalls genuinely make it a spectacular sight.

Walkthrough The Vibrant And Eclectic Town Of Yellow Springs

From a lively downtown scene to sipping on ice-cold brews from Yellow Springs Brewery, this is one of our favorite day trips from Cincinnati to make with or without kids. Yellow Springs, OH, has laid-back coffee shops, unusual boutiques, and plenty of delicious food.

Nature lovers come prepared to hike, as on of the top things in Yellow Springs is to get out and enjoy their parks. The John Bryan State Park offers many hiking trails, while Clifton Gorge State Nature Preserve has stunning limestone gorges.

Don’t miss out on a visit to the Glen Helen Nature Preserve to see the famous yellow springs and beautiful waterfalls.  After a good hike, head over to Young’s Dairy for a scoop of their delicious homemade ice cream!

Tucked away in Alexandria, Indiana, hanging from an industrial size hook, is the World’s Largest Ball of Paint. What once started as a humble baseball now has over 26,000 layers of paint and counting.

Visitors to this Guinness Book of World Records Holding attraction can add a layer to the ever-growing ball. The attraction is free to the public; however, you must call ahead and schedule a time.

The World’s Largest Ball of Paint is at the Carmicheal home and is open by appointment only. A quick google search will yield the current phone number to contact to set up your tour.

Go Swimming at an Old Quarry in La Grange, KY

Another great day trip within two hours from Cincinnati is La Grange, KY.  Adults can cool off at Falling Rock Park .  It is an old rock quarry that is maintained solely through rainwater! Anyone over 18 can bring a pool raft, noodle, kayak, or paddleboard and relax.

While you are visiting, be sure to visit Mainstreet La Grange, one of the few places in the country where the train runs right down the middle of the road.

Hartman Rock Garden

Venture off the beaten path with a visit to the Hartman Rock Garden a spectacular collection of art made by self-taught artist Ben Hartman. One man’s legacy has become a unique Ohio roadside attraction drawing thousands of visitors annually. The garden is free to visit and is open year-round.

Wright-Patterson Air Force Base

One of the best day trips from Cincinnati is a visit to the Wright-Patterson Airforce Base, known as the National Museum of the United States Air Force. This historic treasure is the world’s largest  Military Aviation Museum. The Museum is FREE to the public and is open daily, except holidays.

Catch The View From Rising Park

Soak in breathtaking views of Lancaster, Ohio, by climbing to the top of Rising Park’s Mount Pleasant. Arguably one of Ohio’s most spectacular views, Mount Pleasant overlooks the city of Lancaster with the surrounding foothills in the distance.

To get to the top of Mount Pleasant, visitors enter through Rising Park. A parking lot is adjacent to the trailhead, directly past the tennis courts. The climb is moderate; however, remember that you will gain 206ft in elevation in about .7 miles. It took us roughly 45 minutes round trip, but you can stay up and enjoy the view for hours.

FIRST ALERT WEATHER DAY | Chris Bailey tracks Helene toward Kentucky

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - Hurricane Helene is heading toward a Florida landfall later today before heading toward Kentucky on Friday. What’s left of this storm is set to bring flooding rains and high winds. Those high winds may cause some damage.

Helene may become a category 4 hurricane before making landfall late this evening near Apalachicola, Florida. From there, this zips northward across Georgia and into Tennessee by Friday morning. From there, the center crosses into southern Kentucky and then stalls across western Kentucky into Friday night.

Here’s a breakdown of what I expect from Helene here in Kentucky:

• Heavy rains will become more common across the entire region.
• This will come in waves spiraling from east/northeast to west/southwest.
• Some local high water issues may develop during this time.
• Winds start to gust and may reach 35mph by morning.
• HIGH WINDS THREAT AND FLASH FLOOD THREAT
• Waves of torrential rain producing showers and some thunderstorms spin across the state.
• Rainfall of 2″-4″ will be possible in much of the state just during this time period.
• Flash flooding is a good bet for some areas.
• High winds are going to be a major player. Gusts of 50mph to 60mph will be possible. I can’t rule out a few gusts exceeding 60mph.
• Power outages and some wind damage are likely.
• I’m also watching central and eastern Kentucky for a low-end risk for a tornado spin up.

FRIDAY NIGHT

• Additional waves of heavy rain spin across western and central Kentucky.
• This action expands to the east during the overnight.
• Additional flash flooding and general flooding is possible.
• Winds come way down but gusts of 30-40mph will be a good bet.
• What’s left of Helene slowly spins eastward across Kentucky.
• Rounds of heavy rain continue and may drop another 1″-3″ in some areas.
• Once again, flash flooding and general flooding are a real possibility.

SATURDAY NIGHT/SUNDAY

• Our system continues to weaken as it slowly pushes to the east.
• Leftover showers continue to spin across central and eastern Kentucky.
• High water may still be a concern.

During these few short months of cooler temperatures and vibrant color, we want to be outside, soaking it in before winter creeps into the Bluegrass State. 1. Bernheim Arboretum & Research Forest - 2075 Clermont Rd. Clermont, KY, 40110

If you're looking for what to do in Kentucky in October, Bernheim Arboretum is a picturesque retreat any time of the year, but in the fall the 15,625 acres of land come to life with stunningly brilliant color. There are many events held at the Arboretum throughout the season and more than 40 miles of trails available to take in the gorgeous scenery. The best way to soak up all this glorious scenery is on one of Bernheim's numerous trails. In addition to its paved walking paths, the park invites visitors to, quite literally, take to the trees. On its acclaimed canopy walk, a boardwalk extends straight into the forest canopy, suspending visitors an astonishing 75 feet above the forest floor. The experience truly feels as though you're floating in a dreamy, fairy tale forest!

2. Bardstown, Kentucky

Bardstown is hailed as Kentucky's most enchanting small town; a place that is filled with history, lovely restaurants and cafes, shops, and My Old Kentucky Home State Park. 4. Waverly Hills Sanatorium - 4400 Paralee Dr., Louisville, KY, 40272

What would fall be without a trip to a haunted house? And why not go to one of the most terrifying places for the ultimate experience? The Waverly Hills Sanatorium is one of the most haunted places not only in Kentucky, but in all of America. Waverly Hills Sanatorium is a historic former hospital in Louisville that came close to being demolished. A historical society saved it and has offered tours, ghost hunts, and other events for several years.

5. Country Pumpkins - 1835 Sherman Mt. Zion Road, Dry Ridge, KY, 41035

Country Pumpkins is the ultimate "fall on the farm" experience, located in Northern Kentucky's Dry Ridge. Although it's just minutes from the highway, you'll love your time on this peaceful, working dairy farm where the staff is extremely friendly and the activities are festive and authentic. If You Only Have One Day to Visit This Small Town in Kentucky, Here’s Everything You Absolutely Can’t Miss

A small town of about 18,000 people in southwestern Kentucky, Murray is the ideal place to spend a day. Case in point: Murray has been voted the "friendliest small town in America" by Rand McNally and USA Today five times! There's much to love about Murray beyond its friendly people. But what if you only have one day to spend in this treasured small town? We've compiled a list of four must-see attractions for a day trip to Murray, Kentucky:

1. Murray's Historic Town Square

The first thing visitors must see is Murray's historic town square. The square is a great place to walk around, shop, and grab a bite to eat. Murray City Hall is on the corner of 5th and Main Street. Nearby are three bookstores: Bolin's Books, Newlife Christian Bookstore, and Bookmark. The Main Street Market, a boutique grocery store, is also on Main Street. Hungry day trippers can eat at Mugsy's Hideout, which serves Italian food, or Rudy's on the Square , which serves classic Southern food. If you love visiting local coffee shops, as I do, 5th & Main Coffees is near City Hall. If you visit on a Saturday morning, look out for the popular Downtown Farmer's Market, where local vendors sell crafts and produce.

2. Wrather West Kentucky Museum

After getting acquainted with Murray's town square, the next place to visit is the Wrather West Kentucky Museum on Murray State University's campus. The museum is free and open to the public and shares historical information about West Kentucky and the Jackson Purchase through fixed and short-term exhibits. Interestingly, the museum is located in the university's first permanent building, which opened in 1924 and is on the National Register of Historic Places.

3. The Doran Arboretum

The next stop is a 15-minute walk from the Wrather West Kentucky Museum: the Doran Arboretum at Murray State University . The arboretum is open every day from dawn to dusk and is the perfect place to take a walk on a pretty day. It has a 0.8-mile track for walking and running, a butterfly garden, a sensory garden, and much more.

4. Kentucky Lake

Incredibly, Murray is about 30 minutes from Kentucky Lake . This 160,000-acre lake is the last attraction we chose for our list of things to do on a one-day trip to Murray. Visitors can hike, bike, boat, horseback ride, golf, and hunt at Kentucky Lake. Of course, it is difficult, and likely impossible, to do all of these things at Kentucky Lake in one day. For a short visit, we recommend taking the Kentucky Lake Scenic Drive, a three-mile drive with several photo-worthy overlooks and places to picnic.

It also has the Calloway County Barn Quilt Trail, a collection of more than 60 colorful quilt patterns on barns scattered around the county. This road trip meanders through south-central Kentucky, with stops near the Kentucky–Tennessee border. The distance between the lakes is relatively short, so it won't be long after you've left one magnificent lake before you're approaching another.

1. Fagan Branch Lake

Fagan Branch Lake, also known as Fagan Branch Reservoir, is a 140-acre lake in Lebanon, Kentucky. The lake is a great place to fish and is stocked with rainbow trout each January and November. Swimming and camping are not allowed at Fagan Branch Lake, but it is an excellent spot to hike. The 3.2-mile Cecil L. Gorley Naturalist Trail loops around the lake, offering beautiful water views.

2. Campbellsville City Lake

A short drive south from Fagan Branch Lake takes you to Campbellsville City Lake. This 85-acre lake in the heart of Campbellsville, Kentucky, is excellent for fishing bluegill, bass, crappie, and catfish, among other species. Kayaks and small fishing boats are available to rent. Please note: $25 annual membership is required to access the lake.

3. Green River Lake

Green River Lake is just outside of Campbellsville, Kentucky. This expansive, 8,000-acre lake offers many fun things for visitors to do, including swimming, fishing, camping, hiking, horseback riding, birding, and picnicking. There are basketball and volleyball courts and a mini golf course for sports lovers. The Army Corps of Engineers built a dam in the 1960s to create Green River Lake, and Green River Lake State Park opened shortly after.

4. Lake Cumberland

About an hour southeast of Green River Lake lies the massive and dazzling Lake Cumberland . With more than 60,000 acres of water, Lake Cumberland is a water-lover’s paradise. There are ample opportunities to enjoy the lake through fishing, boating, and swimming. Hiking trails offer fantastic lake views. Visitors can also stay overnight at the lodge, cottages, or campsites.

5. Dale Hollow Lake

Dale Hollow Lake is 28,000 acres of captivating water that crosses over the Kentucky–Tennessee border. Dale Hollow Lake State Resort Park is in Burkesville, Kentucky, and draws visitors with incredible birding, swimming, picnicking, horseback riding, caving, fishing, boating, and biking. Visitors can see eagles flying around Dale Hollow Lake from December through February each winter. The lake's clear water makes it one of the best places to scuba dive in Kentucky!

6. Barren River Lake

Barren River Lake is northwest of Dale Hollow Lake in Glasgow, Kentucky. The 10,000-acre lake is a beautiful site to fish, swim, and boat. It's also a great place to hike, bike, birdwatch, and play golf. Barren River Lake State Park Resort offers overnight accommodations for visitors, including a lodge and campsites.
