Green River Guides

Our green river fly fishing guides.

There are many choices when booking a Green River fly fishing guide, so why choose us? The primary reason is that we have some of the best and most experienced guides on the Green River. Our Green River river guide service is comprised of a small group of top guides. We keep the guide service on this river smaller on purpose so that we can ensure your experience is one of the best you will find. Instead of aiming at maximizing the quantity of boats on the water every day, we choose to keep our numbers smaller in order to focus on a quality trip for you.

Shop owner and head guide, Chad Jaques is a Green River veteran guide himself having guided the river since the 1980s and he personally guides many of the trips himself. His experience on the river allows him to hand pick a staff of Green River guides with a critical eye. As a result, you can be sure you will be in the very capable hands of some of the best fly fishing guides on the Green River who know the river intimately and are dialed into what is going on. Of course, you don’t have to take our word for it, read some of our testimonials and reviews from TripAdvisor, Yelp, Google and Facebook .

Fly Fishing The Green River

Cradle

Every angler should experience the fly fishing on Utah’s Green River below Flaming Gorge dam at least once, if not many times in their life! There’s a reason it’s included in the book, 50 Places To Fly Fish Before You Die and countless other books, articles and films. Prolific hatches, gin clear water, a huge population of large trout, and consistent water temperatures make the Green River a world-class year round destination for fly fishers from all over the world. The fishing on this amazing river is something you have to experience to understand. Combine all of this with spectacular scenery that alone is worth the guide trip and you have something truly world class!

Fly fishing guide trips on the Green River take place on one of three sections that the river is divided into (A, B or C section), each offering quite different experiences and fly fishing scenarios. Each section can be floated in one day and they range in length from 7 to 13 miles. In some cases when flows are higher, two of the sections are floated in one day covering more water to maximize certain hatch opportunities and avoid river traffic.

Green River Sections

Green river section a.

The A Section of the Green consists of the first 7 miles below Flaming Gorge dam, beginning immediately below Flaming Gorge Dam and terminating at Little Hole. This section is largely responsible for the reputation the Green has as one of the West’s top trout fisheries. This results from the huge population of trout the river holds here numbering around 8,000 to 14,000 fish per mile and the easy access it affords. This section holds majority wild brown trout, good numbers of rainbow trout, some cutthroat trout and a rare brook trout. There are paved roads and parking areas with access at both Flaming Gorge dam and Little Hole 7 miles below with a well-maintained trail system meandering the entire length. As a result of this reputation and the easier, major access points, it is by far the most popular section of the river. However, there are ways to avoid the crowds during the busy seasons by fishing early or late in the day or floating two sections in one day.

The A section is composed of very deep pools and riffles in the upper half and steeper gradient riffles, rapids and pocketwater in the lower half as it winds its way through dramatic Red Canyon with 500 foot cliffs towering overhead. The A section of the Green is limited to day use only, and camping is not allowed. At the river leaves the canyon, it begins to slowly open up more near the end of the A section at Little Hole.

GREEN RIVER SECTION B

The B Section of the Green River consists of the 9 miles of the River immediately below the A Section, beginning at Little Hole and terminating at Indian Crossing in Brown’s Park.

This section is actually quite diverse with the upper half a completely different fishery than the lower half. The upper half is like an extension of lower section A with riffles and pools and large trout populations. Brown trout dominate this section although good numbers of rainbows are still to be found throughout. The lower half of section B is very different as a result of sediment and flows that are introduced by Red Creek, a tributary that drains a large high mountain desert area to the northeast of the river.

Because of the influence of Red Creek, some days you will spend most of your fishing time above the confluence while other times when it is clear you may spend more time below. When the conditions are right, the river below Red Creek can rival any of the rest of the river. Camping is permitted below Little Hole and is plentiful on the B section in numerous forest service maintained campsites that you must reserve on a first come-first served basis. We offer all inclusive overnight camping trips on this section if you want to truly experience the river in all of its glory.

GREEN RIVER SECTION C

Section C of the Green River consists of the remaining 12 miles or so from Indian Crossing downstream to the termination of dramatic Swallow Canyon. There are a few remaining miles of river prior to the Colorado border beyond Swallow Canyon, but fishing is mostly focused above that point.

C section leaves the canyon behind and flows through wide open Browns Park winding its way slowly through the high desert plateaus of outlaw country until the last 3 or 4 miles where it enters Swallow Canyon. There are several boat ramps on this section and the road runs parallel to the river so floats of various lengths are possible. This section of the Green river sees far less pressure, as a result of more driving time to reach and less consistent fishing but it can rival the fishing on the rest of the river if you hit it right. The population of fish is significantly lower on C section with mostly Browns and an occasional Rainbow thrown in. When Red Creek (located half way through the B section above) is running after a rain storm or during spring runoff, the entire C section runs muddy and can be rendered completely unfishable.

The river on this section is characterized by long slow stretches with broad lengthy riffles in between with the fish concentrated in the riffles and areas with structure. Camping is permitted throughout this section and all of the campsites are accessible by vehicle as well as boat. In addition, there are fully developed campgrounds at Taylor’s Flat Bridge and Indian Crossing.

Green River Guide Trips

e-boat-at-diving.jpeg

We were one of the first to acquire a permit to guide on the Green River back in 1986. Since then, it’s become one of the worlds more consistent and recognized trout fisheries for Brown, Rainbow, Cutthroat and hybrid Rainbow trout, that can be found rising to your fly in the west.  Although it has excellent aquatic hatches, it’s probably best known for the excellent terrestrial fishing it offers, in particular spring and early summer Cicada’s.

In 2014 Mat Lucas; a previous member of the shop crew, and guide, purchased our Green River Guide permit.  His service is Western Rivers Flyfisher Guides.  Since purchasing our permit, he’s significantly improved on the service offering shuttles, and experienced guides who will help you enjoy this diverse and spectacularly scenic fishery, especially if you enjoy having success fishing dry flies.

We can help you book your Green River guide trip or check on availability.  If you’re interested in booking a trip, to best accommodate you, we urge you do do so at your earliest convenience, Matt’s busy and the calendar is filling up faster each year.  Give us or WRF Guides a call.  As your trip nears, we hope to see you in our shop before departing to help you get ready for your day on the water where ever your fly rod takes you

Fly Fish the Green River below Flaming Gorge

Daggett County, Utah

Description

Added by Dan Ransom

Known as the "A" section of the Green River, this stretch of river is arguably the best fly-fishing in the state. And even when the fishing is slow, the scenery is all-time.

Located in the northeast corner of Utah, this section of the Green River begins beneath the Flaming Gorge dam. The "A" section runs from the dam to Little Hole, and there is parking and trail access from both ends. If you plan on launching a boat, it's easy to setup a shuttle in Dutch John. For those on foot, a trail runs the entire 7 mile length of the "A," and is a great way to literally get your feet wet if you don't want the extra hassle of renting (or owning) a boat.

On any given day, you will likely see all types of folks enjoying the river, and during the summer months the pressure can be intense. Fortunately, a river only flows one direction, and the crowds are easily managed, but basic river etiquette is always appreciated.

The small town of Dutch John is almost entirely a collection of seasonal fish shops and gas stations, where it's easy to get the local beta on the hatch, schedule a shuttle, or buy whatever gear you may have left behind.

Car camping is available at Dripping springs, along the road between the dam and Little Hole.

Guided Green River Fly Fishing Float Trip

fly fishing

#1 On the Bucket List

Other than the fact there have been many outdoor activities that have occupied my time, I don’t have a good excuse as to why I have lived near some of the best fly fishing in the country (possibly the world), for 20 years and did not fly fish.

I believe if one of my good friends hadn’t moved out of state, I would have spent thousands of hours standing in cold water by now, but he did move away and so the only trout I caught have been on spinning gear or by drowning worms or though I hate to admit it… on Power Bait.

Back in March, my old friend Barry, that I had not seen face to face in 20 years invited me to join him on a September fly fishing trip from Glacier National Park down to Yellowstone. The trip was #1 on Barry’s bucket list and learning to fly fish was also high on my list.

It was obvious that Barry had caught the fly fishing bug and in 16 years of fly fishing has caught 46 species of fish on a fly rod. His excitement about fly fishing was contagious and his invitation was almost… Almost … enough for me to consider fishing instead of elk hunting. I had already applied for mule deer, elk and moose tags, so I did not commit to the September trip.

After bouncing a few emails back and forth, I managed to plant an idea in Barry’s head about coming here in July or August to fish my local streams and high elevation lakes. I suggested we could even do a guided float trip on the Green River below Flaming Gorge Reservoir, which is in the 3-corners area of Utah where Utah, Wyoming and Colorado meet.

Next thing I know, Barry has an airline ticket for August 1st and we were researching fly fishing guides for the Green River. After researching for a couple of days and a final recommendation from another guide Barry previously fished with, he booked a trip with Old Moe’s Guide Service out of Dutch John, Utah. Now all we had to do was wait four months until August 2nd.

Finally, the day arrived and I picked Barry up at the airport. We had a busy four day schedule. In addition our Green River float trip, we planned to fish two or three other streams and some high altitude lakes with the goal of adding two more species; Cutthroat trout and Arctic grayling to Barry’s species list. If we were successful and if we still had time, Golden Trout could be a third new species.

After the trip back from the airport and lunch, we fished the local stream near my house for several hours, where Barry caught his first western brown trout on a bouncing rig he tied for the first time using a nymph and scud patterns suggested by our local fly shop.

Bubba Had a Fine Idea

When we arrived at the meeting place (the Conoco gas station, which is no longer a Conoco station) in Dutch John to meet our guide the next morning, there seemed to be a little confusion about who was guiding us that day. Barry had already been told that our original guide had been changed, so we were to meet guide #2. When we found guide #2, we were told he was not our guide. He quickly made a phone call and within a few minutes, guide #3, Dave McDonald showed up and introduced himself.

It’s a little disconcerting to be passed around from guide to guide, especially at the last minute. We hoped we hadn’t made a mistake. We didn’t.

After our initial introductions, Dave asked us if we had time for a long trip that day. He felt like fishing both the “A” & “B” sections (approx. 17 miles) of the Green River that day if we were up to it. Floating any of the A, B or C sections of the river is considered a full day trip, so the chance to fish longer and see even more of the river was definitely a bonus, so Hell Yeah, we were up for it.

He had a plan to put in below the Flaming Gorge Dam and row down the river for about 30 minutes or so to get ahead of the all the other boats before we started fishing. By the time we got to the Little Hole Day Use Area, where the “B” section begins, most of the “B” fishermen would have been long gone and the fish would be settled again. Like Forest Gump said, “Bubba had a fine idea”, and so did Dave.

While Dave paddled the drift boat down the river, he teased us about not looking at all the fish we were passing over in the clear water. He said it would drive us crazy to see that many big fish and not wet a line. He was right. It is crazy to pass over that many big fish and not try to catch them, but by doing so, we saw only a handful of other fishing boats all day.

Fishing the A and B Sections of the Green River

Fishing the Green River in a Drift Boat – BLM photo

Dave dropped anchor and before he started rigging up the gear, he asked if we wanted to nymph or fish with dry flies. As a fly fishing virgin, I had no preference, but soon learned that some fly fishing purists believe the only way to fly fish is with dry flies (as Reverend McClean in “A River Runs Through It”). Barry didn’t care which method we started with, he just wanted to start catching fish. Dave suggested we start off nymphing with a bouncing rig and then try some dry flies later.

Bouncing Nymph Rigs

Dave rigged up the bouncing rigs with three split shot at the bottom, a scud pattern just above the bottom, a prince nymph on top and another nymph in the middle, with all nymphs about a foot apart on a rig that was about 9 feet long.  I hoped I could figure this fly rod thing out and catch a few fish, but most of all, I didn’t want my inexperience to get in the way of Barry’s float trip.

Within a few minutes after we started fishing, Barry latched into an 18 inch brown trout, which as he said, was already a “day maker” in all of the places he normally fishes in the east. Barry quickly caught a couple of more “day makers”.

green river cookie cutter brown trout

Typical “cookie cutter” brown trout on the Green River

A 16 inch trout might be a big fish at most streams, but as Dave put it, the average cookie cutter fish on the Green River is between 15-17 inches. Barry said his largest trout was a 22 inch rainbow, so he had high hopes that he could catch a new personal best.

Even I, the fly fishing rookie, started getting strikes. I missed quite a few strikes and had a few nice fish get off before I landed the first one, a “cookie cutter” brown. Handling a fly rod for the first time takes a little practice to manage the loose fly line and to bring in a fish by retrieving line by hand and not on the reel. I bungled a few fish, but finally started getting the hang of it.

Barry hooked and then lost what would easily have been his largest trout ever. A few minutes late, he hooked what seemed like another monster, but when he finally got a look, it was a whitefish (mountain whitefish ( Prosopium williamsoni )). For Barry, the whitefish was an unexpected species he could add to his list of species caught with a fly rod.  Later that day, he caught another whitefish, which was probably the hardest fighting fish we had that day at about 19 inches.

As the hours and miles of stream drifted by, we had dozens of strikes and Barry landed dozens of nice browns and a few rainbows. Most fish were in the 15-17 inch range, except when we passed the Little Hole area that was recently stocked with small rainbows. I caught a few fish too.

The Biggest Fish of the Day

The biggest fish of the day was Barry’s 20 inch brown trout (see photo below). We certainly didn’t set any records for the Green River, but this was a new brown trout size record for Barry. The “cookie cutter” brown is my largest trout on a fly rod.

20 inch brown trout

Twenty inch Green River brown trout.

We missed the monster cicada hatch on the Green River this year that had people coming to fish the Green from all over the world. It was still early for the grasshoppers, so the last hour or so of the trip, Barry switched to a cicada to try some dry fly fishing and managed to catch four or five more nice brown trout in the 15-17 inch range.

We caught so many fish, we lost track of the exact numbers, but I estimate we landed close to 40 fish that were 15 inches or larger and probably 10 fish that were 18 -20 inches.

I don’t know about Barry, but I missed dozens of nice fish strikes and we both hooked at least another dozen very nice fish, but lost them. Barry easily caught three fish to every one I caught.

The Green River was very Warm in July

We noticed that most of the fish caught were Brown Trout, which was a little surprising to us. Except for some recently stocked rainbows, I don’t think we caught a single large rainbow trout in the B section.

Dave told us that July had some record high temperatures that seemed to have driven the rainbows upstream to the cooler, higher oxygenated water. When we got back home, I looked up the water temperature measured downstream near Jensen, Utah. On July 17th, the water temperature was measured at 25.8°C (78.4°F) which can be fatal for Rainbow trout depending upon the amount of dissolved Oxygen. I don’t know if the water in the B or C sections got that warm or not, but that could explain why there were few large rainbow trout below the “A” section. Brown trout can tolerate temperatures slightly above 80°F for short periods of time.

It is probably lucky for the trout fishery that there is a minimal flow from Flaming Gorge Reservoir which is mandated under the Endangered Species Act to protect Endangered Fish (razorback sucker, pikeminnow, bonytail chub and humpback chub) farther downstream.

Man-made Trout Water

The upper green river below Flaming Gorge Dam is a tail water trout fishery that was artificially created after the dam was completed in 1964 and the reservoir was filled by 1974. The water released from the reservoir is clear, cool and relative constant flow compared to the warm, high sediment water with seasonal flooding that occurred in the Green River before the dam was built. The same dam and reservoir that created the great trout fishery is the reason the native fish in the Green River and other upper Colorado River drainages are endangered.

I wonder what the possibilities are for a worst case scenario where releasing minimal flow is not possible on very hot days in the future. That would be very bad for both the trout and the endangered fish farther down stream.

Recommendation for Guided Fly Fishing Float Trips on the Green River

For anyone that has not yet taken a guided trip down the Green River, that needs to be added to your bucket list.  According to the Utah Division of Wildlife, there can be as many as 120,000 fish (15,000 fish per mile) in the first eight miles of stream below the dam (A section). The guides know how to handle the boats and they know how to catch the fish.

Most trips are half day trips unless you schedule a full day or get lucky like we did. If you are worried about the river being crowded, try to schedule both A and B sections and plan on a thirty minute head start on the A section.

Though “Old Moe” seemed confused about who was guiding us that day, it couldn’t have worked out better in the end. A good time was had by all and the use of alcohol was not suspected, just good times and great fishing. We give Dave McDonald and Old Moe’s Guide Service all thumbs up and look forward to doing it again.

I know I will be back and hope Barry will be back as well. Barry said this was the best guided fly fishing trip and he has been on more than a few. Now that we have seen the Green in early August, Dave suggested we fish it in March or April. Sounds like another plan.

FYI, a nice lunch was included in the trip and it was nice break to stop at picnic table at a campsite on the side of the river. Cold soft drinks were also provided, but all we wanted and needed was cold water.

This time of year, the water was low so the ride was very tame except for one short section. Barry and I walked around the rapids and with our weight out of the boat, Dave was able to take the boat through the rapids without any trouble. Another drift boat (without a professional guide) attempted the rapids with at least two passengers and a dog. Their boat was turned on it’s side and they were all standing in the water below the rapids trying not to lose all their gear. Luckily, no one was hurt.

After making sure everyone was OK and that help was on the way, we proceeded down river. There is a reason life jackets are required on that part of the river. Why should we be surprised that none of the people involved in the accident were wearing life jackets.

My First Fly Fishing Trip

As for my first fly fishing trip, casting a nymphing rig from a boat is not as challenging as casting a dry fly. Both Dave and Barry were patient instructors, but you know I had my fair share of backlashes and tangles. Most of the time I was able to keep out of everyone’s way and made it through the entire day without hitting anyone in the head, so Dave never had to put me in the penalty box (whatever that meant).

As far as the rest of Barry’s visit, after fishing 11 hours on the Green River, we hit it hard again and fished two streams and three high mountain lakes the next two days. We had a blast, got a little sunburned and a good case of ass-a-draggin-itis by the time it was over.

Barry caught fish every place we fished. We were not able to land a cutthroat trout for him, but did catch Arctic grayling, so Barry’s list of species taken on a fly rod now stands at an impressive 48 species. My list is three species, but how many greenhorn fly fishermen do you know that can claim Arctic grayling?

I caught my first trout on a large stream and I caught trout on both nymphs and dry flies.  But now I have a new problem. I need a fly rod.

Seems like you guys really had fun especially since you’re doing the kind of activity that you both love so much. It was quite an adventure to travel from one place to another just to go fishing. You must really love the sport for the complexities that it can bring.

Yes Patricia, we had a great time, but what do you mean “just to go fishing”? For some, fishing is the purpose of life. And yes, I am really enjoying learning to fish with a fly rod. I just got my own equipment and fished by myself for the first time. Nothing to brag about, but I learned enough to fool a couple of small rainbows with flies. Old dogs that learn new tricks could be dangerous.

Trout under water

Seedskadee Float

Seedskadee National Wildlife Refuge holds 26 miles of the finest fly fishing water Wyoming has to offer. Two Rivers Fishing Company works under Wind River Troutfitters, LLC permit to offer guided fishing trips within the Seedskadee Boundaries.  This section of the Green River is one of the most highly sought-after stretches of water in western Wyoming.

Green River

In addition to being a great fishery, the Green River has a rich history-mountain man fur trading rendezvous took place on the banks of the Upper Green from the early 1800s. The Green River can be enjoyed by the beginner and intermediate fisherman, but can also provide a great challenge for the more advanced fishers. The Green has an abundant population of Rainbows from 10- to 16-inches, but the possibilities of catching Rainbows over 20 inches are very common. Browns of 14- to 18-inches are frequently caught, and here again lunkers over 20 inches are available. The Green is also home to Cutthroat and Brook trout.

New Fork River

The New Fork River flows out of the New Fork Lakes which are nestled at the base of the Wind River Mountains. With very little public access, this wild trout fishery is a haven for Brown and Rainbow trout in the 14- to 24-inch class. The New Fork is challenging for all fly fishers, but the rewards of trophy trout are great. Fishing this river will be a memorable experience.

With its abundant wildlife, controlled guiding, stunning views and big tailwater trout, a trip to Seedskadee is a once-in-a-lifetime float and Two Rivers Fishing Company can make it happen.  This tailwater tests anglers’ skills with dries, nymphs and big streamers.  In the fall, Kokanee Salmon run up the river to spawn, earning Seedskadee the nickname “Li’l Alaska.” Contact TRFC to book your trip on this unbelievable section of the Green River.

A 50% deposit is required to secure a reservation within 7 days of booking your trip. In case of a cancellation, the deposit is fully refundable if the written cancellation request is received prior to 60 days of the trip date. For cancellations within 60 days of arrival, the deposit is non-refundable. The full trip amount is non-refundable for cancellations made within 7 days of the trip. Requests to move an already scheduled trip date will be treated as a cancellation and a new booking. Due to the nature of permitting required for our advanced bookings, we can not make exceptions to our cancellation policy. Wyoming weather is often variable-trips will not be cancelled due to adverse weather conditions. If you are at all concerned with the cancellation possibility, we strongly encourage you to purchase trip insurance. Unexpected events do arise and travel insurance is very reasonable. BRENTON KUHN

I have been a Fly-Fishing Guide and Fly Tier for better than thirty years.  I have worked at some of the most revered Trout and Salmon waters in the world from Alaska to Chile.  I am considered a Master Drift Boat and fly fishing river guide.  I currently guide on the Green River at Flaming Gorge Utah (32nd year), the White River in western Colorado, Three Forks Ranch on the Little Snake River in northwestern Colorado, I hold a Coast Guard 100 ton Captains license and take fishing charters on Flaming Gorge Lake in Utah, Lake Powell in Utah-Arizona,  Lake Havasu in Arizona-California and for the last few years in the Florida Keys and the Bahamas.  My Facebook Page is Jimmy Cohen or jc.fishguide.

Cody grew up in Alaska fishing for salmon, trout and other species.  He started guiding out of high school at age 16 at Lake Creek and on the Skwenta/Yenta/Susitna drainages of AK. He began guiding for Old Moe on the Green in 2016. Cody holds a US Coast Guard 100-ton Master Captain license and has over 15 years of guiding experience.  Currently he calls Dutch John "home" with his fiancé Amber and daughter Autumn.  He loves fishing and guiding on the Green and looks forward to the technical and ever-changing challenges this fishery presents daily.

Hank has been fly fishing since the age of 10 and is going into his 27th year as a professional fly fishing guide. Anyone who has fished with the Hankster knows it is hard to find a better guide to show you great fly fishing experience. Look for Hank to be floating the Green or wading the Provo or Weber in search of a big dry-fly eating trout for his clients.

Brady has beeen fishing the Green since he was 15 years old.  He had a 3 season stint of full time guiding back in the 2000’s with Denny Breer.

After guiding, he went on to chiropractic school and now runs a successful holistic health clinic in Idaho Falls that offers regenerative medicine, functional medicine and chriopractic. Guiding has never left his blood. He has kept his skills sharp by teaching his kids to fish the South Fork, Henry’s Fork and the Green. He is a go to when it comes to getting young anglers to have a great experience and has a great knowledge of the river. We are excited to have Brady back on a part time basis.

Hello my name is Brock, I grew up in Salt Lake City Utah and have been coming up to the Green River for 32 years. My family has been recreating in this area my whole life and this is where I found my love for the green river and fly fishing. Some of the reasons why I love fly fishing for trout is I love where they live it’s never ugly and spending time in these areas with friends and family is what it’s all about. And of course getting a handshake now and again is a bounce that comes with the experience of flyfishing.I was a client Of Doug Roberts as a kid and have been working for him ever since he bought the company in 2010. I have experience for all levels of clients whether you’re a beginner or an expert. I’m very passionate about what I do, I don’t think you can ever fish enough especially when it come.

So you can say that James knows the Green better than most. James is well versed in all fly fishing technique's, Dry fly, Nymphs, and Streamers, his favorite technique is which ever one is working best at the time.

After attending school at Colorado State University, Dan moved to Utah in 2014 to continue pursuing his two life passions of fly fishing and backcountry skiing. Shortly after, he started sharing his passion for fly fishing with others and began guiding on Utah's Provo and Weber rivers. In 2019, Dan started guiding on the Green River. He loves the sport, the places it takes him, and the people he meets along the way.

Being born and raised in the upstate of the Carolinas, it's only natural for my blood to run orange and my heart to be rooted in those wise ole Appalachian Mountains.  In 2009, I had the opportunity to spend six months immersed in all things “a-puh-LATCH-uhn”, spanning the length of Georgia to Maine at the pace my feet were willing to allow. Consequences of hiking long distances lead me to California in 2015. Along the way, I was exposed to even older rock that offered its' own intoxicating appeal: the canyon country along the winding Green River in Utah. I was transfixed then as I am now. Most days you'll find me on the river dipping oars until complete darkness blankets the slopes of the Uinta Mountains. Other days, I'll be found spotting tailing carp along the shallows of Flaming Gorge Reservoir. Regardless of the day, my feet have taken a backseat to my arms.

Spencer Black has lived in Utah for most of his life and grew up fly fishing small trout streams since his childhood. One stream ran behind his house, in fact. He started working in area fly shops In high school and has a B.S. in Recreation Resource Management with a minor in Fisheries from Utah State University. After college he worked for the Oregon and Washington Departments of Fisheries, as well as an upscale lodge in Alaska.      From these experiences and training, he has become an expert at reading river strategy and trout and aquatic invertebrate habitat. He has been a guide on the Green River for two years, helping hundreds of clients learn how to fly fish using the technique that best suits them and will ensure them a successful day on the River.     When Spencer is not fishing for trout in the Green River, he spends time chasing upland and waterfowl with his bird dog Riffle, big game with a bow, and spey fishing for steelhead in the Northwest.

Daniel was raised in Jackson Wyoming. He learned to fly fish at six years old, learned to tie flies at seven years old. He has been in love with fly fishing and the outdoors ever since. He has fished most of the trout streams in Western Wyoming, Eastern Idaho, Southwest Montana, and Northern Utah. Daniel spent years wanting to guide, and started his own company in Afton Wyoming guiding on the Salt River. After a few years of only a few clients a year, he made   the jump to guide in a bigger market. Daniel went to guide school in 2019. This will be his second year guiding on the Green River here in Dutch John Utah.  Daniel has a passion for guiding that can come off as intensity. Daniel gets just as excited when people catch fish, as they do. Daniel also loves teaching people who have never fly fished before. In most instances he can take someone that has never touched a fly rod to casting dry flies by the end of the day. Daniel can instruct even experts who want to improve just about any aspect of their fly fishing. Casting, fly selection, and entomology can all be discussed, and knowledge given or improved upon on your guided day with Daniel. Daniel has over 40 years of fly fishing experience and has many return clients. Do not hesitate to book your day with Daniel. He loves telling jokes, and making people laugh. Daniel has a ton of movie references and enjoys asking clients their favorite movies when he is tying on new flies or undoing the inevitable tangles that happen on the river. He also drives long haul during the winter, and probably has driven through or close to where you are from as he has been in every state in the lower 48. If everything else fails, you might ask him to do his self titled, 'fat man here fishy fishy dance'. He says it is only stupid when it doesn't work, and most of the time it does.

fishing the green

The Green River in Dutch John, Utah is known for its diverse population of fish, including several different species of trout, bass, and catfish. The exact number of fish that live in the Green River in Dutch John is difficult to determine, as it can fluctuate depending on various factors such as water flow, temperature, and fishing pressure. Additionally, different sections of the river may have different fish populations but every part of fishing the green leads to a great new adventure.

The Green River is home to a variety of fish species, including:

Rainbow trout

Brown trout

Cutthroat trout

Smallmouth bass

Largemouth bass

Catfish (channel and flathead)

It is important to note when you are fishing the green that the Green River below Flaming Gorge Dam is managed as a tailwater fishery, which means that the water temperature, flow, and water chemistry are controlled by the dam. These controlled conditions support a healthy population of fish and make the river an attractive destination for anglers.

Snake River Angler Fly Fishing Report for June 25th, 2024

Snake River

Flows continue to drop as tributaries quickly recede and visibility is shaping up nicely.  The best fishing has been in the afternoon hours from around 1:30pm to 5:30pm, and this includes surface feeding.  PMDs, yellow sallies, and the smaller golden stones are out after 10am but caddis kick into gear shortly thereafter and completely dominate from 2pm on (the latter is the most reliant hatch at the moment).  When using surface patterns in the afternoon, focus heavily on slow eddies, riffle current margins, and side channels.  Nymph rigs should be somewhat moderate in depth – 5 ½” to 7”  – and be targeting the same water as well as the head of riffles and banks with slow to moderate currents.

Flow are ramping down fast and currently stand at 12,000cfs.  Visibility is good on all reaches.  Water temps on the upper reach are going over 50 degrees and the upper 50s in the lower canyon and on the lower river near Lorenzo.  Nonetheless, going subsurface with nymphs and streamers is the most productive way to go.  Nymph rigs have been working best in riffles, seams, center of eddies, troughs, and parallel drop-offs.  Go relatively deep in the 7 to 9 foot range.  Larger patterns – Rubber Legs, 20-Inchers, and #10-#12 soft hackle patterns like Duracells and Cyclops – are working best.  Worm patterns are also producing well.

Streamers are producing when fished along banks, structure, confluences, and the tail of seams.  As with your nymphs, go big and focus on darker patterns primarily (think Boogeyman, Silvey Sculpins, and Peanut Envy).  Fish these on floating and intermediate sinking lines or sinking tips in the INT to 6ips range.  REALLY vary up your retrieves and do several hesitations with your line strips.

Green River

Flows at Warren Bridge are at approximately 900cfs.  The Green has plateaued and dropping really well.  There are leftover caddis around but PMDs are dominating followed by yellow sallies.  Gray drakes are being spotted in intermittent fashion.  Expect this hatch to really pop by the end of the month. Dry-dropper and tandem dry rigs are working best when fished along banks, in troughs, on eddy current margins, and along seams.  Focus primarily on tailouts, and some days the entire length of these water types are producing.  Faster currents are fishing better than slower or moderate ones.

Streamers are working as good as nymphs and dries and some days are getting into fish in a more consistent fashion.  The most active water includes banks, structure, seams, and troughs.  Both large and moderately sized patterns are working equally well.  Go with moderate retrieves and fish them on floating lines or sinking tips in the INT to 3ips range.  No big difference at the moment between darker and brighter colors.  As with nymphs and dries, fish the entire length of the water you are targeting but concentrate on the tailouts.

Yellowstone National Park

Firehole and Madison Rivers – The upper Firehole remains cool with temps in the upper 50s, but the lower Firehole as well as the Madison are both exceeding 65 degrees and has been going over 70 degrees a couple of days, so please be careful, keep you eye on the water temps, and limit you fishing when these temps peak.  Still some decent hatches of PMDs and leftover yellow sallies.  The best action has been occurring from around 10am until around 1pm with the pre-10am fishing being better than post 1pm.  Focus on the head of seams, the entire length of riffles, with both surface patterns and nymph rigs.  Deep in eddies is a good plan of action after 1pm.

Yellowstone Lake – Fishing remains solid on flats and drop-offs with baitfish imitations.  Dragonfly and damsel imitations are tapering off in production, but are still worth using from time-to-time.  When using baitfish patterns, go with moderate retrieval speeds primarily.  Speed them it up if production slows.  Use hover and intermediate sinking lines.  Sinking tips are not working as well unless there is some decent chop on the surface.

Lewis Lake – Surface action has picked up with gray drakes and and callibaetis dominating, although on sunny days there is good action on carpenter ants.  Flats are starting to slow unless a hatch is underway.  Drop-offs and tributary mouths are your best option when going subsurface.  Intermediate sinking lines are producing best throughout the day.  Clean sweep lines in the 4ips-2ips-INT range are working well after 2pm.

Lewis and Snake Rivers – Green Drakes are starting to pop on both although nothing stellar unless there is some cloud cover.  There are also some golden stones, yellow sallies, and PMDs around.  Surface patterns and dry-dropper rigs are the best way to go.  Expect the best action to be in the Lewis River Meadows with green drake patterns and on the Snake below the Lewis River confluence with just about anything matching the invertebrates mentioned above.
