Complex Hours
Greenhouse tour & open house, history of the london civic garden complex.
The eastern end of Springbank Park was designated for horticultural use by landscape architect William Dilger. This designation is the same today as it was in the original Master Plan for the park in 1913.
On this broad triangle near the Wonderland Road and Springbank Drive intersection, the City’s first greenhouse was built in 1922.
The current greenhouses opened in 1985.
A large storage building with attached greenhouses was located behind the present greenhouses where currently the compost piles and parking area exist. This building was demolished in 1986.
The City of London expanded the Greenhouses in 1996, at which time the three rows of below ground cold frames were demolished.
This newest addition, The London Civic Garden Complex, (designed by local architect Richard Hammond of Cornerstone Architects) opened in September 1996. Three partners were involved in the $1.4 million project: the Garden Club of London, The Manness estate and London Parks and Recreation. The Garden Club provided $250,000 from funds accumulated through flower shows, craft sales and boutiques. The Manness portion came from a $250,000 bequest to the parks department from Keith Manness. The conservatory is now called the Manness Conservatory in memory of his father Samuel, a former city alderman. A large room at the rear of the complex, is home to the Garden Club of London. In 2007, the Garden Club built a storage room to the rear of the lobby.
Horticultural developments have expanded to include extensive gardens (maintained by the City of London) and a Woodland restoration area (maintained by the Garden Club of London).
Beyond this tableland, the land slopes to the river where Wonderland Gardens and the Joe McManus boathouse are located. The original Wonderland Gardens was constructed in the early 1930’s by the Jones family as a bandshell and dance floor. In the summer of 2005 a fire destroyed the original dance hall and damaged the bandshell. The City of London Master Plan calls for a mixture of reconstruction, adaptations and new components such as a new bandshell, open-air pavillion and a smaller food concession building. These structures will be surrounded by landscaped gardens, informal recreational features such as picnic spots, lookouts and trails through natural woodlands.

A Visual History of Eldon House
The gardens, the grounds of eldon house.
The Harris property originally consisted of 13 acres and a terraced walk spanned the two elevations of the site, from the house down to the flood plain. The property initially extended along the Thames River from Fullarton Street north towards Central Avenue (then known as Great Market Street).

Julia Hunter Fund Partnership
Eldon House was contacted by M. Hunter on behalf of the Julia Hunter Memorial Fund in March 2018 to discuss a possible partnership between our two organizations. The Julia Hunter Fund is an organization that supports public gardens in London and Southwestern Ontario. It was created to honour the legacy of the late Julia Hunter. We were delighted at the opportunity to work with the fund to enhance our heritage gardens as well as engage with the community in a fresh way. The partnership was approved by our Board and we began with a series of meetings that resulted in a plan for our south lawn garden. The goal of Eldon House’s partnership with the Julia Hunter Memorial Fund was to work together to transform the south lawn garden by adding historically accurate plants and panels. By adding text it would serve to connect the museum to the exterior and engage visitors and hopefully increase the aesthetic and pollination of the garden.
As part of the project plan the Julia Hunter Fund provided funding to introduce ten historic varieties of plants for the southern 1880s style garden bed.
These plants are: Gypsophilia paniculata Acanthus spinosa Lilium lancifolium Hemerocallis Angelica gigas Schizachyrium scoparium Asclepias tuberosa Anemone ‘Honorine Jobert’ Iris pallida ‘Variegata’ Platycodon grandiflorus

Heeman’s is a family-run greenhouse, berry farm, coffee counter and cidery/meadery that has been proudly serving London and the great communities around it for over 60 years. Their pet and stroller-friendly greenhouse is open 7 days a week, year-round. It’s warm and cozy to browse in the winter, and bursting with colour in the summer throughout their extensive grounds and greenhouses making this a true gardener’s paradise! There’s always something new to see as the seasons change when browsing over 100,000 square feet of retail space.
Every fall brings the arrival of London’s original Porch Package along with their Food Trucks on the Farm weekends, and there’s always plenty of Christmas greenery and decor in November and December to bring some holiday cheer to your home.
It’s a popular family destination with visits often including a peek at the fish pond and wandering the display garden complete with waterfalls, walking paths, and water features teeming with frogs and tadpoles. Followed up with a treat like their famous strawberry sundaes and milkshakes or a much needed latte from the onsite Berry Beanery that’s open whenever the greenhouse is open!
Their 30 acre strawberry farm grows juicy and sweet strawberries that are picked fresh daily from June through to October, with the Pick Your Own Strawberry Patch open in late June for a few weeks so you can enjoy the sunshine and strawberry picking fun for yourself. They also work with some amazing local farm friends to bring you the best summer produce Ontario has to offer; Niagara peaches, local sweet corn and cherries (just to name a few!).
Friendly and knowledgeable Daymakers in orange will always be there to help answer your gardening questions, or give extra love to any puppy that enters the greenhouse! So grab your friends, family or fur babies and enjoy a visit to Heeman’s anytime of year.

The prettiest conservatories in London
Find much more than tomato plants in these glammed-up greenhouses around London
London is blooming with conservatories that bring a whole new meaning to the term ‘urban jungle’. It’s easy to enjoy the great outdoors inside these glassy constructions that most DIY nuts could only dream of.
As well as being perfect pockets of leafy calm in the city, these magnificent conservatories house exotic plants, sun lounges and top-class restaurants , so whether you want your cappuccino with a side of cactus or a romantic dinner in an orangery, you’re sorted.
Many of the conservatories below are asking visitors to pre-book a time slot now that they’re open to the public again. And you’ll have to wear a mask . But it’s all worth it to get down with nature without a thing like unpredictable weather getting in the way.
If this is what a gardener’s world looks like, you can count us in.

London’s prettiest conservatories
1. Temperate House, Royal Botanic Gardens
- Parks and gardens
Best for: Getting lost in a ginormous glassy cathedral.
The return of the restored Temperate House in 2018 was a horticulturalist’s delight – and the novelty of exploring the grade I listed greenhouse is yet to wear off. It’s twice the size of Kew’s much-loved Palm House and took five years to renovate. The intricate Victorian architecture has again been paired up with rare and wonderful plant species: more than 1,500 of them.
Anything else I should know? The Temperate House was voted Best UK National Treasure in 2018 - as if you needed more reasons to visit.
Price: Entry to Kew Gardens from £17.50
2. Barbican Conservatory
Best for: A lazy meander in among the foliage.
This well-hidden and truly calming green oasis is home to more than 1,500 species of tropical plants and some exotic fish. It used to only open on selected Sundays and bank holidays, but since lockdown, it’s opened up on weekdays, too. We’re all in need of some nature, after all.
Anything else I should know? You’ll need to book a time slot ahead of your visit, and it can get booked up quite far in advance. And sorry, pooches – it’s no dogs allowed.
Price: Free
3. Petersham Nurseries
- Restaurants
- Contemporary European
Best for: A magical fairylight-lit dinner in a rustic greenhouse
The ultimate in agricultural charm, complete with a real meadow on its doorstep, Petersham Nurseries is the perfect balm for the frazzled urbanite. Housed within the garden centre, the Café is set in a stately greenhouse, hung with Indian prints and pictures, and furnished with rickety tables and chairs.
Anything else I should know? For the first time ever, service is extending to sundown, with the greenhouse lit by festoon bulbs and candles.
Price: A la carte lunch menu offers two courses for £45 and three for £55. A four-course dinner costs £65.
4. Palm House, Royal Botanic Gardens
Best for: Perusing prehistoric plants
Kew’s iconic Victorian glasshouse is quite the stunner. The rainforest climate supports an impressive collection of tropical plants from some of the most threatened environments on the planet. Some are even extinct in the wild.
Anything else I should know? During the winter months, it’s lit up in colour for the annual Christmas at Kew light show, but it’s eye-grabbing all year round.
Price: Entry to Kew Gardens from £17.50.
5. Boundary Rooftop
- Bars and pubs
- Cocktail bars
Best for: Top cocktails with a side of stunning views.
This Shoreditch rooftop bar boasts a beautiful heated orangery featuring lemon, clementine, calamondin and mimosa trees, and is open Monday to Wednesday from 5pm and Thursday to Sunday from noon. Stop by for all-day cocktails whatever the weather: a negroni to warm you up, or a jug of spritz to cool you down.
Anything else I should know? Book in advance to make sure you bag a table.
Price: Main dishes from the grill cost around £20.
6. Princess of Wales Conservatory, Royal Botanic Gardens
Best for: Feasting your eyes on creepy carnivorous plants.
The Princess of Wales Conservatory has an impressive ten climatic zones, which means that it’s the most complicated conservatory at Kew. From cacti to ferns, orchids to titan arum (that's a really stinky plant, to you and me), and a zone dedicated to predatory plant species, this conservatory seems to have the entire world under one roof.
Anything else I should know? Fans of the soothing-voiced Sir David Attenborough should know that he buried a time capsule in the foundations of the Princess of Wales Conservatory in 1985, packed with seeds of endangered plant species. What a guy.
Price: Entry to Kew Gardens from £17.50.
7. Museum of Brands, Packaging & Advertising
- Ladbroke Grove
Best for: Taking a trip down memory lane.
This colourful and nostalgia-rich collection of chocolate wrappers, royal souvenirs, toys, magazines has recently relocated to a bigger and better home. Its new digs include a bright, sunny cafe with glass walls overlooking a pretty garden. If the weather allows, marvel at the modern branding on your teabag at an outside table.
Anything else I should know? The Time Tunnel hosts changing exhibitions – ‘When Brands Take a Stand’ will be next up when the Museum reopens on September 4.
Price: From £9.
8. Syon House and Park
- Historic buildings and sites
Best for: Marvelling at metalwork from the early nineteenth century
Syon House is bursting with history. It was built on the site of a medieval abbey that was brutally dissolved by Henry VIII, and it was here that Henry's fifth wife Catherine Howard awaited her execution. Outside, explore the ornate Great Conservatory, with its huge iron and glass dome. It’s filled with plants from all over the world, from ‘cape’ plants from South Africa to ‘new holland’ plants from Australia.
Anything else I should know? The house remains closed to the public, but you’re free to book tickets to its conservatory. Floor surfaces include cobblestones, flagstones, grass, gravel and wood, which means there is limited wheelchair access in some places.
Price: Tickets for the garden and conservatory cost £8 for adults.

Gardens and conservatories
Alluring and aromatic, tactile, textured and sometimes tasty, gardens offer the opportunity to connect with nature using all five senses.
Ontario’s outdoor gardens celebrate the flora and fauna of the changing seasons while indoor conservatories and botanical greenhouses showcase rare and splendid plants from around the world.
In addition, heritage gardens in Ontario are also culturally significant, representing a living legacy of by-gone eras or preserving natural Indigenous knowledge.

Van Luyk Greenhouses and Garden Centre
Customer ratings and reviews.
Van Luyk's usually has every plant I'm ever looking for. If they don't their staff is knowledgable enough to find me a suitable substitute. Sometimes the prices seem a little high but I don't go enough other places to verify this.
Good selection and well stocked, plants were taken care of. Staff was very helpful, gave suggestions and advice on plants and would point our if the plant looked sickly and may cause problems. Had non common plant care foods and soils. Will be going again next season.
Today I went in simply to ask questions about my plant that wasn't doing well. The woman who helped me was so kind and knowledgeable. She gave me some awesome advise and tips to help rejuvenate my plant. She really made my day! I ended up purchasing another plant as well. I'll recommend them to anyone who wants educated and friendly service! Thanks again!!
Great selection and pricing. Helpful staff. The large “Sun Patient” baskets are the best, very easy to care for and bloom right through fall (can be hung or in planter)
Such wonderful service and the ladies are so helpful too. always love it there. They helped me design a perfect small flower arrangement for my bf's grandma in the hospital. So helpful! Can't thank them enough

Urban Roots London opens new greenhouses
Urban Roots London, Ont. celebrated the installation of two new heated greenhouses on Saturday, allowing for more locally grown food.
The non-profit organization revitalizes underused land, producing and distributing organic vegetables and herbs for people in need.
Officials said the new greenhouses will increase production during the winter months by about 200 per cent.
The Ontario Trillium Foundation partially funded the project with over $100,000 in grant money.
Urban Roots started back in 2017 and has since distributed more than 60,000 pounds of food in total to over 400 visitors each year.
