Trump, Harris presidential debate in Philadelphia: Moment-by-moment recap

Analysis, key moments from presidential debate.

Former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris faced off in their first presidential debate on Tuesday, September 10. LiveNOW's Andrew Craft recaps the debate with NOTUS' Katherine Swartz and 24sight national politics reporter Tom Lobianco.

PHILADELPHIA - The first presidential debate between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump kicked off Tuesday evening in Philadelphia and showcased two separate visions for the country.

Tuesday marked Trump’s second debate for the 2024 presidential election since he and President Joe Biden held one back in June before Biden dropped out of the race and endorsed Harris as a presidential candidate.

There isn’t a second debate between Harris and Trump scheduled, but one could be.

Our live blog coverage has now concluded. Here's a look at what was covered during the debate (estimated times are in Eastern Daylight Time):

10:45 p.m. Closing statements

Harris and Trump veered in different directions in their closing arguments. The vice president promised that she was focused on the future while Trump focused on the past. She emphasized that she has plans to help the middle class.

Trump criticized Harris for not implementing her plans while she is in office. "Why hasn’t she done it?" he said repeatedly.

Both Trump and Harris said "thank you" after they delivered their closing statements and the debate ended.

Doug Emhoff, the vice president’s husband, joined his wife on stage and waved. Trump exited alone. His wife, Melania, did not join him in Philadelphia.

The tech crew applauded.

10:42 pm. Harris takes Trump’s ‘bloodbath’ comment out of context

Harris said Trump was warning of a "bloodbath" if he loses the election, but she took his comments out of context.

Trump delivered the line at a speech in March in Ohio in which he was talking about the impact of offshoring on the American auto industry and his plans to increase tariffs on foreign-made cars. It was in reference to the auto industry that he warned of a "bloodbath" if his proposals aren’t enacted.

10:35 p.m. Harris says she is a gun owner

Harris tried to refute Trump’s accusation that she wants to take away owners’ guns, stating that she is a gun owner, too.

"Tim Walz and I are both gun owners. We’re not taking anybody’s guns away. So stop with the continuous lying about this stuff," she said.

FULL STORY: Kamala Harris says she owns a gun during debate response to Donald Trump

10:27p.m. - Trump on Affordable Care Act

The Affordable Care Act (ACA), also known as Obamacare, is a law that was signed into law by President Barack Obama in 2010 to reform the US healthcare system.

When Trump was asked whether he has a plan, he said, "I have concepts of a plan. I'm not president right now," but said he would move a plan that is better and less expensive that Americans would hear about "in the not so distant future."

10:24 p.m. - Trump overstates inflation numbers

Trump claimed that under the Biden administration, "they had the highest inflation perhaps in the history of our country, because I’ve never seen a worse period of time."

But inflation peaked at 9.1% in June 2022, but it was much higher in the 1970s and early 1980s. Inflation reached a record high of 14.6% in March and April of 1980.

10:22 p.m. - Trump exaggerates number of dead in Russian invasion of Ukraine

Trump’s claim of millions dead in the Russian invasion of Ukraine is greatly exaggerated, according to The Associated Press.

The UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine said that as of early this year, it had verified more than 10,500 civilian deaths since Russia invaded in February 2022.

10:05 p.m. - Trump on Ukraine

"I want the war to stop," Trump said, adding that he has good relationships with the president of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy and the Russian President Vladimir Putin.

"I want to get the war settled," he continued.

Putin has insisted Ukraine must give up vast amounts of territory and give up on joining NATO. That’s simply as a condition to start talks to end Russia’s 2 1/2 year invasion of Ukraine.

10:00 p.m. - Trump falsely claims evidence shows he won in 2020

Donald Trump repeated his false claim that he beat President Joe Biden in the 2020 election, saying "there’s so much proof. All you have to do is look at it."

The election was not stolen . The authorities who have reviewed the election — including Trump’s own attorney general — have concluded the election was fair.

9:55 p.m. - Harris on Jan. 6th insurrection

During the Jan. 6, 2021 attacks on the U.S. Capitol, Harris used the discussion to ask for the votes of people disgusted by both the mobs and Trump’s role in the insurrection.

Harris looked directly at the camera to say, "There is a place in our campaign for you."

She asked for support from voters who "stand for rule of law" and want to "end the chaos."

9:50 pm. - Harris and Trump's debate styles

So far, a couple things should be clear to viewers about Harris and Trump’s debate style.

She turns slightly to look and listen to the former president when he’s talking. Trump listens, but stares straight ahead at the moderators when it’s the vice president’s turn at the mic.

Harris takes notes when Trump speaks. Trump hasn’t been seen writing anything down.

9:45 p.m. - Trump’s legal peril finally comes up

It took more than a half-hour, but Harris found a way to bring up Trump’s legal troubles — his felony convictions, pending indictments and civil liability for sexual assault.

Harris responded to Trump’s claims about crime rates by reminding the former president that he is a convicted criminal with several other pending criminal cases.

"I think this is so rich coming from someone who has been prosecuted for national security crimes, economic crimes, election interference has been found liable for sexual assault," Harris said. "And his next big court appearance is in November at his own criminal sentencing."

Trump blamed Harris and President Joe Biden for his legal plight, referring to the cases against him as "weaponization" of the criminal justice system.

9:40 p.m. - Trump tries to link Harris to immigration

Trump described Harris as the "border czar."

But that was never her formal title, and she was never specifically given the responsibility for security on the border. She was tasked by Biden in March 2021 to tackle the "root causes" of migration from the Northern Triangle — the Central American countries of Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador — and pushing leaders there and in Mexico to enforce immigration laws.

Supporters say she used her stature and connection to the White House to encourage investments in those countries as a way to curb migration in the future. But critics say she could have done more and that there’s no evidence Harris pushed those countries to enforce their immigration laws.

9:35 p.m. - Trump criticizes Biden administration over student loan forgiveness

Trump slammed the Biden and Harris administration for failing to deliver on student loan forgiveness, one of their campaign promises. Some borrowers have gotten relief but parts of the plan have been hampered by lawsuits and Republican opposition.

Earlier this month, the Supreme Court declined to lift an injunction that would have allowed one of the student loan forgiveness plans to be implemented.

9:35 p.m. - Trump repeats support for IVF access

Trump repeated his support for IVF access during Tuesday’s debate, calling himself "a leader on IVF."

This comes about two weeks after he announced plans, without additional details, to require health insurance companies or the federal government to pay for the common fertility treatment.

9:30 p.m. - Trump says he ‘won’t have to’ veto a national abortion ban

When asked if Trump would veto a national abortion ban, Trump said "I won’t have to" because "they could never get this approved" in Congress.

Trump also leaned on his response to questions on abortion rights: saying the issue should be left up to the states.

RELATED: Trump repeats false claims on late-term abortions during presidential debate

In states allowing the citizen initiative and where abortion access has been on the ballot, voters have resoundingly affirmed the right to abortion.

Trump falsely claimed that some states permit abortions after birth, a claim he has repeated several times. In reality, infanticide is criminalized in every state, and no state has passed a law allowing such a practice.

The term "late-term abortions" is often misused to stigmatize abortions later in pregnancy, which are exceedingly rare and typically occur due to severe medical complications.

9:20 pm. - Trump falsely claims migrants in Ohio are eating pets during debate

During Tuesday’s presidential debate, Trump repeated false and inflammatory claims about Haitian migrants in Springfield, Ohio, alleging that they are responsible for eating pets in the community.

RELATED: Trump falsely claims migrants in Ohio are eating pets during debate

During the debate, Trump stated, "In Springfield, they’re eating the dogs. The people that came in, they’re eating the cats."

This claim has been thoroughly debunked by local officials, who have found no evidence to support such accusations.

9:15 p.m. - M ics are off but interruptions are audible

Trump's microphone was off, but Trump was still audible when he objected to Harris as she accused the former president for only being out for himself.

"Donald Trump actually has no plan for you because he is more interested in defending himself than he is in looking out for you," she said. Trump interjected, claiming many economists believe his plan "is a brilliant plan."

9:10 pm. - Harris focuses on middle class during first question

Harris said during the debate she was "raised as a middle class kid" and would be focused on creating an "opportunity economy." She also sharply criticized Trump for policies that she said would increase costs for Americans.

Trump rejected the description, and he said he would focus on tariffs on imports from foreign countries. And he swiftly shifted focus to immigration, saying people were "pouring into the country."

9:00 p.m. - Debate starts

Harris and Trump shook hands as they took the stage for their debate.

8:30 p.m. - Protests outside venue

Demonstrators were protesting the Israel-Hamas war in Philadelphia where the presidential debate was scheduled on Tuesday evening.

Scores of people lined the streets shouting: "Justice is our demand," carrying banners and flags and holding signs that read: arms embargo now.

7:10 p.m. - Both candidates are in Philadelphia

Trump arrived in Philadelphia ahead of the presidential debate. Meanwhile, Harris arrived on Monday afternoon after spending several days at a downtown Pittsburgh hotel preparing for the debate.

7:00 p.m. - Debate stage smaller than it appears

According to The Associated Press, the debate set is smaller than it appears on television. The candidates’ podiums are positioned about 6-8 feet apart in a small, blue-lit amphitheater with no live audience in the room. That means there will be no rowdy applause, no cheers or jeers.

The candidates will enter at the same time from opposite sides of the stage. It’s not clear whether they will shake each others’ hands.

5:50 p.m. - Harris ready for tonight, Biden says

President Joe Biden said he had a chance to chat with Harris ahead of Tuesday night’s debate.

Preview: Harris, Trump to face off in 2024 debate

Former Vice President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris are prepared to meet for the first time on Tuesday in their only scheduled debate of the presidential race. You can watch live at 9:00 P.M. ET on LiveNOW from FOX.

"She seemed calm, cool and collected," Biden said in an exchange with reporters.

4:00 p.m. - Trump, Harris advantages going into debate

Polling shows that Trump has an edge over Harris when it comes to Americans thinking he’s being better positioned to handle the issues of the economy and immigration, while Harris has more of an advantage over Trump when it comes to handling issues related to race and racial inequality, abortion policy, and health care, according to an August AP-NORC poll .

3:15 p.m. - Harris tours stage ahead of debate

Harris stopped by Philadelphia’s National Constitution Center on Tuesday afternoon to tour the debate stage ahead of tonight’s event with Donald Trump.

Harris was expected to check out the space before the 9 p.m. ET debate, but the pool of journalists trailing her weren’t permitted to exit the motorcade and document her tour.

2:15 p.m. - Biden plans to watch Trump, Harris debate

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said Biden would be watching Tuesday from New York, where he’s traveling ahead of the anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

Biden’s  performance in the June 27 debate with Trump touched off a chorus of calls by fellow Democrats for him to step aside in the 2024 presidential race. He did about a month later.

Where is the debate happening?

The debate is taking place in Philadelphia at the National Constitution Center, which has hosted several other major political events.

Democrats Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton debated at the museum, former president Trump held a 2020 town hall there, and President Biden used the center as a backdrop for a speech on voting rights.

Looking ahead to tonight's presidential debate

We are hours away from tonight's anticipated presidential debate. Political analyst, Talmage Boston, joins LiveNOW from FOX to set the stage.

Pennsylvania continues to be one of the most sought after battleground states, and several pivotal moments in this election have happened in the Keystone State.

The assassination attempt on Trump happened in Butler, Penn. and the roll-out of the Harris Walz ticket happened at Temple University.

Will mics be muted?

The microphones will not remain live for the duration of the debate.

It was a point of contention between the two campaigns, and one that Harris’ campaign says is to her disadvantage.

President Joe Biden’s campaign had made the muting of microphones, except for the candidate whose turn it is to speak, a condition of his decision to accept any debates this year. Some aides have said they now regret that decision, saying voters were shielded from hearing Trump’s outbursts during the June debate.

Once Harris rose in Biden's stead and became their party's pick for president, her campaign had advocated for live microphones for the whole debate, saying previously that the practice would "fully allow for substantive exchanges between the candidates."

Vice President Harris will face off against former President Donald Trump Tuesday for the first time since becoming the Democratic nominee.

The playing field is different than it was two months ago when President Biden’s dismal debate performance spurred a wave of concern over his ability to defeat Trump, the Republican nominee.

Since then, a lot has happened. Trump survived an assassination attempt, he accepted the GOP presidential nomination, Biden dropped out of the race and Harris then took over and clinched the Democratic party’s nomination.

Harris has since made up the ground Biden lost in swing state polls and now stands virtually tied with Trump. Despite a groundswell of support and reportedly record-breaking fundraising amounts, her campaign’s honeymoon phase is likely to end , especially as Trump and Republicans look to ramp up attacks.

Here’s what you need to know about this second debate of the 2024 presidential election cycle.

When and how to watch

The event will air at 9 p.m. ET for 90 minutes from the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia. ABC News anchors David Muir and Linsey Davis are slated to moderate the debate, which will be broadcast by the network and streamed on ABC News Live, Disney+ and Hulu.

Follow NPR's live blog for the latest updates, analysis, fact-checking and color; listen to NPR’s special coverage of the ABC News Presidential Debate Simulcast on many public radio stations .

What are the rules for the debate?

The debate rules echo those agreed on for the June matchup. That means microphones will once again be muted unless a candidate is speaking, something the Harris team asked to change for this debate.

It’s a rule initially proposed by the Biden campaign ahead of the first debate and was largely seen as a potential shake-up to Trump’s typical debate style. Instead, it ended up benefiting the former president, who has a history of interrupting in these settings to the point of his campaign’s detriment. Instead, the technical change helped Trump appear more controlled.

Harris’ campaign told ABC that Harris would be disadvantaged by the muted mics because it would shield Trump from direct exchanges — but said that it would agree to the terms lest Trump drop out of the debate altogether.

A campaign official, speaking on condition of anonymity to describe private negotiations, said that a pool would be on hand to hear what the candidates are saying into muted microphones — and that if there is “significant crosstalk,” the network may unmute both microphones. The moderator will warn candidates to stop frequent interruptions, the official said. “Our understanding of these things helped inform our decision to accept muted mics,” the official said.

There will be no audience and candidates will not be permitted to question each other directly. In addition, neither will be allowed to bring pre-written notes or props onto the debate stage.

What to watch for

Harris has mostly campaigned from the trail in her brief time as a presidential contender — excluding a single sit-down interview with CNN at the end of August. She has also struggled in the past with unscripted moments as vice president, which will put the spotlight on her ability to perform in a debate while also laying out some of her platform and going on the offensive against Trump.

Harris has been putting an emphasis on protecting reproductive rights while campaigning, and she’s likely to address it Tuesday night. Leading up to the debate, the Harris-Walz campaign launched its “Fighting for Reproductive Freedom” bus tour, pledging to make 50 stops in key states around the issues of abortion, IVF and reproductive rights.

Bar chart of the shape of the electorate in seven key states.

How the electorate has changed in key states and what it could mean this election

Trump’s stance on this issue has been muddy. He’s made comments on abortion that appear to clash with some of his past views and statements while president . Recently, he acknowledged that Florida’s six-week ban was too restrictive , then clarified shortly after that he would not support the state’s upcoming ballot measure that, if passed, would safeguard access to abortions up until fetal viability.

Trump is likely to link Harris to Biden’s handling of the economy and immigration, two areas where Republicans have heavily criticized the White House. He may also highlight aspects of her political record, including her past support for decriminalizing border crossings and banning fracking — two policies she backed during her 2020 presidential bid and has since pivoted on .

On the other hand, Harris has repeatedly tied Trump’s platform to Project 2025 , a 900-page set of policy proposals for a potential second term put forward by a conservative think tank, The Heritage Foundation. Trump has tried to distance himself from the plan — which includes further restrictions on abortion access among a slew of moves that would increase executive power.

Tuesday’s matchup also poses new stakes for Trump: He’s facing a very different opponent.

In the aftermath of the June debate, the former president’s mistakes weren’t a focus, largely because of Biden’s more noticeably poor performance. That said, Trump by no means had a perfect night, repeatedly highlighting false and misleading information . So this time, as NPR’s Domenico Montanaro pointed out , “If Harris has a solid debate, the focus could be on Trump in a way he doesn’t want.”

What's next?

Vice presidential candidates Minnesota Democratic Gov. Tim Walz and Ohio Republican Sen. JD Vance will face off on Oct. 1 in a debate hosted by CBS News. The two hold similar roles in their respective campaigns: to appeal to voters in the "Blue Wall" states of Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin this fall.

It’s unclear whether Harris and Trump will debate a second time. No additional dates have been formally announced.

Debate night comes to Philadelphia, the new center of the political world

The presidential debate at the National Constitution Center puts the city squarely in the political spotlight.

Flag of the United States flying over Federal Building at 6th and Market Street with National Constitution Center in background, Monday, September 9, 2024. Former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris will debate at the Constitution Center Tuesday.

Philadelphians have always known that our city is the center of the universe. For today and the next 55 days, so will everyone else.

Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump will meet Tuesday night for a debate that’s so historic and potentially pivotal that it’s nearly impossible to fit into one sentence just how unprecedented it is. The presidential nominees are squaring off in what may be their only debate at one of our city’s great prides, the National Constitution Center, which overlooks Independence Hall and the birthplace of American democracy.

It will be a night packed with symbolism, and is just the latest in a string of history-making political events that have taken place here. Both candidates have held rallies in Philadelphia. Their surrogates have effectively camped out in the city and its surrounding counties. Shortly after becoming the unexpected nominee, Harris introduced her running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, at Temple University .

Ahead of the debate, both sides are mobilizing, underscoring how the campaigns each see opportunities for growth in the city. There are watch parties in and around Philadelphia, and the DNC is blanketing the city with billboards. There’s going to be a giant IUD on Independence Mall. Protesters will likely descend, and Mummers are being bused from South Philly bars in full regalia to greet Trump.

And the streets will be lined with television news trucks and media from around the world, here to cover the debate that could define the rest of the presidential campaign.

» READ MORE: Kamala Harris and Donald Trump are preparing for their first debate in Philly. Here’s what’s at stake.

Perhaps this was all expected. Philadelphia is the largest city in arguably the most critical swing state — a small town of 1.6 million people that has an outsized chip on its shoulder.

For some city leaders, this debate provides an opportunity to show off the city to a national audience that perhaps only knows Philadelphia for the parts of its reputation they’re trying to fix.

Asked about the debate last week, Mayor Cherelle L. Parker, a Democrat, said she wants visitors and viewers to see the city as a modern, working-class city where she’s trying to make progress on public safety, cleanliness, and economic opportunity.

“I’m always talking about ‘don’t listen to what I say, watch what I do,’” she said. “I want people to see who we are. See who we are.”

Who we are? City Councilmember Isaiah Thomas said simply: “We make history here.”

“We hosted the first Continental Congress and we were the nation’s original capital,” he said. “We have our own language, culture, food traditions, and swag. We love our sports teams, historic landmarks, our artists, and our neighborhood feel.”

» READ MORE: Your guide to debate watch parties in Philly and the suburbs on Tuesday as Trump and Harris face off

The city is, of course, no stranger to presidential politics and the national media circus. It was four years ago in Northeast Philadelphia where former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani famously held a pro-Trump news conference at a landscaping business and sowed doubt about an election that judges across the country said was fair.

And it was outside the Convention Center in the heart of Center City where activists on both sides stood for days as election workers counted ballots. Some cheered “count every vote” while others jeered “stop the count.” Some danced and wore costumes, some played instruments, and some shouted obscenities. Many stayed away — it was the middle of a pandemic.

This time around, the national media is catching our city in a good mood. We’ve largely emerged from the pandemic and the sense of chaos it wrought. Gun violence is way down. On a far more superficial level, but still no doubt weighing on our psyche, the Birds won their season opener, and Kyle Schwarber can’t stop hitting homers.

For this week and until Nov. 5, both campaigns will expend untold resources to try to make inroads in Philly.

Trump’s side is hoping to win over more voters of color than he did the last two times he ran for president, and he has made clear he sees opportunity for growth in Philadelphia.

» READ MORE: Philly hosted a presidential debate 48 years ago. May this one work out better.

The former president’s supporters in the city say they’ll be showing up. There’s a pro-Trump motorcade scheduled to traverse the city. Joe Mirarchi, a South Philly resident and a Mummer, worked with other Mummers club leaders to offer a shuttle service from Tankie’s Tavern, Brothers Two Lounge, and Big Charlie’s Saloon north to the starting point.

They’ll be taking an “Eagles tailgating bus.”

”Anyone who supports President Trump,” Mirarchi said, “let’s welcome him to Philadelphia.”

As for Harris, her campaign is looking to secure critical Pennsylvania in part by driving turnout in the city, where Democrats vastly outnumber Republicans — but where turnout has sagged in recent elections. Democrats, including Parker, are welcoming Philadelphians to watch parties in Harris’ name.

“Having the debate here spurs interest, and will hopefully increase voter participation,” said City Councilmember Mark Squilla , a Democrat whose district includes the site of the Constitution Center. “When Philadelphia has great turnout, a lot of times that decides which direction the state goes in.”

How to pick the best preschool or child care center for your child

The most important thing is that a preschool has a cohesive learning plan., by moriah balingit | associated press • published september 7, 2024 • updated on september 7, 2024 at 12:23 pm.

Preschool options are growing with the expansion of early learning programs, giving families in some parts of the U.S. a dizzying array of choices.

Some states, like Colorado and New Mexico, are funneling state money into existing private preschools or child care centers. Others, like California, are expanding preschool through the public school system. Some cities are launching their own universal preschool programs. In the 2022-2023 school year, 35% of 4-year-olds and 7% of 3-year-olds were enrolled in public preschools — a record high.

Philadelphia news 24/7: Watch NBC10 free wherever you are

The benefits of high-quality preschool are clear, research shows, and children from low-income households stand to gain the most. They are more prepared for kindergarten, which has grown increasingly academic, are less likely to need special education services and are less likely to have to repeat a grade. There are longer-term benefits, too. Adults who attended preschool are less likely to be incarcerated and are healthier than those who did not.

Preschool once was reserved mostly for families who could pay, or for families with low enough incomes to qualify for public programs. Now, hundreds of thousands of families have more options than before.

But how to pick the right one? Here are some things to consider when looking for a high-quality preschool.

It's Back-to-School Season! See where teachers and families can get freebies and big discounts

Take a tour.

Grownups should take a tour of a preschool they’re considering — and keep an eye out for interactions between adults and children, the state of the facilities and other clues to the quality of the care.

In a high-quality preschool or child care center, teachers are engaged. "They are on the floor, they’re at tables, they are asking questions,” said Amanda Batts, who oversees quality assurance for the National Association for the Education of Young Children, which credentials preschools. “They’re engaging in co-inquiry with the children in their care.”

Red flags, Batts said, would include “disorganized learning spaces.” Preschools are inherently chaotic places, but classrooms should still be well-organized and clean, and children should have access to learning materials like toys and books.

Ask about teachers and curriculum

Parents should ask what the training requirements are for the educators, and how much they are paid, said Steven Barnett, head of the National Institute of Early Education Research. Many preschool teachers have bachelor’s degrees and teaching certifications similar to those required for teachers in K-12 schools. Many others have or are working toward a child development associate certificate. A CDA requires coursework, an exam, practicum hours and an observation, where teachers must show they can apply those lessons in the classroom.

Curriculum is important in preschool because it guides teachers in planning play-based learning activities. A high-quality preschool or child care center should be able to share its curriculum, Barnett said.

If a parent spots a worksheet on a tour, it could be a sign that the instruction is not developmentally appropriate, said Batts.

Instead, experts say preschools should heavily emphasize social-emotional learning — teaching kids how to interact with their peers and how to manage their emotions — along with learning their letters and numbers. Those peer interactions are best practiced through play.

Don’t worry much about fancy philosophies

Some preschools advertise they use a name-brand early education philosophy, often a European one like Montessori, Waldorf or Reggio Emilia.

Individual schools, however, vary widely on how closely they adhere to a particular approach, Barnett said. The most important thing is that a preschool has a cohesive learning plan, he said.

Outline your priorities

Families weigh multiple factors when choosing a preschool. Many parents are looking for a preschool where the hours align with their work schedules. And cost is obviously a consideration.

Batts encourages families to figure out their priorities and rank them, “so that you can find a place that’s going to meet – perhaps not all – but the most important priorities for your family.”

Find out if you qualify for assistance with costs

You might be surprised how many families qualify for free preschool or a child care subsidy.

Many places have recently expanded public preschool and programs to help families pay for privately run preschools and child care operations.

The federal government funds organizations that help people navigate their options or connect them with child care assistance. To find your local agency, Child Care Aware of America has a special search tool on their website.

“Every state is different, and in a lot of situations, the most helpful thing is to talk to someone who can assess your family’s individual situation,” said Anne Hedgepeth, chief of policy and advocacy at Child Care Aware of America.

Check licensing

Once you've narrowed down programs, check their licenses.

Licensing requirements differ from state to state, but they generally outline health, safety and staffing guidelines preschool and child care operations must meet. Many states have exemptions for certain types of preschools, like small, home-based programs. The Department of Health and Human Services has compiled information about licensing and registration of child care facilities for every state and territory.

Many states recognize child care centers that go beyond minimum licensing requirements. For instance, a preschool may require additional staff training or outline efforts to engage with parents. In Alabama, private preschools and child care operations can be awarded stars based on their curriculum, training requirements and level of engagement with families.

The National Association for the Education of Young Children also accredits child care centers and preschools, but many high-quality centers don’t pursue that credential.

As Harris and Trump debated, social media had its own war

By Stephanie Kelly

NEW YORK (Reuters) - While tens of millions of Americans tuned in to watch the debate between Republican Donald Trump and Democratic nominee Kamala Harris on their television screens on Tuesday, a secondary battle played out on social media's smaller screens.

From the opening moment of the debate, Democrats seized on Harris' walk across the stage to shake Trump's hand and introduce herself, posting videos and photos.

"Kamala said you’re gonna shake my hand dammit!" social media user Adam James Smith posted on X, to over 68,000 likes.

Part of Vice President Harris' debate plan was to goad Trump into saying things that could become viral social media clips, advisers said earlier, and the debate suggested that strategy paid off. However, Trump's campaign and online supporters quickly declared victory after the debate was over, claiming a win for the Republican former president.

Harris' sometimes bemused, sometimes alarmed, sometimes skeptical facial expressions as Trump cycled through a series of familiar falsehoods were quickly turned into memes. Trump's repetition of a false claim that Haitian migrants in Springfield, Ohio, were eating pet dogs and cats, though, probably inspired the most reaction.

"THEY'RE EATING THE DOGS," quickly trended on social media platform X, buoyed by thousands of posts - including many confused at the quote's relevance in a presidential debate, after Trump said "They're eating the dogs, the people that came in, they're eating the cats."

As the debate ended, Harris scored the ultimate online victory. "Like many of you, I watched the debate tonight," Taylor Swift said on Tuesday to her over 280 million Instagram followers. "I'm voting for @kamalaharris because she fights for the rights and causes I believe need a warrior to champion them."

The post already had over 4.3 million "likes" on Instagram as of late Tuesday, two hours after it was posted.

Social media is playing an even more significant role in this year's election cycle than it has in the past, political strategists say. Both the Democratic and Republican parties have drafted content creators, or influencers, to push information on their party's policies and their candidates.

"(Social media) both is what people think and shapes what people think," said Shannon McGregor, an associate professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's Hussman School of Journalism and Media.

Overall, Trump far outperforms Harris and her campaign on followers. The Harris campaign's official Kamala HQ account has 1.3 million followers on X, compared to the Trump campaign's 2.4 million, for example. However, her campaign has received over 100 million "likes" on its videos on TikTok versus Trump's 44 million.

TRUMP DECLARES 'BIG WIN'

Trump's campaign and his supporters jumped on his response as he discussed Harris' economic plan, calling it simplistic and a copy of her boss President Joe Biden's agenda.

"Run, Spot, run," Trump said, in reference to a popular book series used to teach children to read in decades past. The term was quickly trending on X.

Harris put Trump on the defensive Tuesday with a stream of attacks on abortion limits, his fitness for office and his myriad legal woes, analysts said. But the Trump campaign, and Trump himself, quickly declared victory on social media after it was over.

"People are saying big win tonight," Trump declared on his Facebook account after it was over, in a post that quickly had nearly 30,000 likes. He also appeared before reporters and said the moderators were "unfair" to him.

The Harris campaign also declared debate victory in a statement Tuesday night.

Both sides quickly seized on Trump accusing Harris of failing to "meet with (Benjamin) Netanyahu when he went to Congress," referring to a July visit to Washington by the Israeli prime minister, and said she "wanted to go to the sorority party." Harris met with him separately.

Harris supporters on X rallied behind the vice president, who is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha, a historically African American sorority, with posts like "sorority party to the polls."

On TikTok, Make America Great Again Inc, a Trump-supporting super PAC, also posted a series of victorious videos after the debate to its 3.6 million followers, including a clip from a CNN focus group in which a Pennsylvania voter said post-debate, "When facts come to facts, my life was better when Trump was in office."

Harris and Trump debated tonight in Philadelphia. Here’s what you need to know

Donald Trump and Kamala Harris shake hands.

When and how to watch

What are the rules for the debate, what to watch for.

  • What's next?

  • Time: 6 p.m. PT on ABC
  • Duration : 90 minutes
  • How to listen : LAist will air the debate live on 89.3 FM. You can tune into your radio, ask your stream to play LAist 89.3 or hit the Listen icon at the top of any page on this site.
  • Location : National Constitution Center in Philadelphia
  • Moderators : ABC News anchors David Muir and Linsey Davis are slated to moderate the debate, which will be broadcast by the network and streamed on ABC News Live, Disney+ and Hulu.

An empty silver chair on a dais with a microphone and a placard that reads "Andrew Do/District 1." A man is out of focus speaking at a podium in the foreground to the left of frame.

Visit The Only UNESCO World Heritage City In The US

In November 2015, Philadelphia received a high honor as the first UNESCO World Heritage City in the US. The city received this designation because of its many historical landmarks, cultural sights, and buildings. The most noteworthy is Independence Hall, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where the Declaration of Independence and the United States Constitution were signed.

Philadelphia's most famous founding father is Benjamin Franklin, a man of many great distinctions. Although he had little formal education, he became an author, publisher, scientist, inventor, diplomat, and statesman. As an entrepreneur, he began a successful printing business and published his annual “Poor Richard’s Almanack”. The same entrepreneurial spirit continues in the city today.

Independence Hall Independence Hall free

It is in this red-brick, Georgian-style building that the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution were debated, drafted and signed by our forefathers, and those who visit Independence Hall can see surviving copies of the documents. Visitors can also see the Assembly Room where George Washington was appointed commander in chief of the Continental Army. Recent reviewers agree this is a must-see in Philadelphia.

Located in Independence National Historical Park in Old City, Independence Hall is just steps from the Liberty Bell Center , making it convenient to visit both landmarks in a morning or afternoon.

Liberty Bell Center Liberty Bell Center free

No matter your interests or intentions for a visit to Philadelphia, the Liberty Bell is a must-see. This 2,080-pound piece of history was once mounted in the belfry of Independence Hall , where it was used to mark important historic events, most notably the first public reading of the Declaration of Independence.

It's unknown why or exactly when the Liberty Bell was damaged, though historians believe the first crack developed in the early 1840s. Metal workers were soon tasked with repairing the bell in anticipation of George Washington's birthday in 1846, but the repair was unsuccessful and the bell ceased to chime again.

Rocky Statue and Steps Rocky Statue and Steps free

Created for a scene in "Rocky III," the Rocky Statue sits at the bottom of "The Rocky Steps" at the Philadelphia Museum of Art , where the fictional boxer trained in the original movie.

For the full "Rocky" experience, run up the 72 steps of the museum – don't worry, you can stop for breaks along the way – so you can take in the views of the Benjamin Franklin Parkway (often compared to the Champs-Élysées in Paris) at the top, just like Sylvester Stallone did in the film. Snap a photo with "Rocky" before or after the trek – previous visitors agree the fun photo op alone is worth a visit. They also warn of queues to take pictures.

Reading Terminal Market Reading Terminal Market free

One of the most fun (and delicious) things to do in Philadelphia is taste your way through Reading Terminal Market. Located beneath the Reading Railroad's 1891 train station (a National Historic Landmark) in Center City, Reading Terminal Market houses more than 70 vendors. Sample food from around the world – including Greek, Thai, Mexican and Indian specialties – while perusing homemade crafts and jewelry. Recent visitors agree there's something for everyone at Reading Terminal Market, noting that any lines you encounter are well worth the wait.

With so many merchants, the market can feel overwhelming so it's best to have a shortlist of places to visit before you head inside. Some of the best food options include:

Mutter Museum Mutter Museum

Housed in a 19th century building at The College of Physicians of Philadelphia, the Mütter  Museum highlights the mysteries of the human body through wet specimens (biological samples preserved in fluid), anatomical models, medical instruments and more. Notable exhibits include Albert Einstein's brain, a tumor removed from President Glover Cleveland's mouth, and the death cast and livers of famous Siamese twins, Chang and Eng Bunker.

Visitors agree the Mütter  Museum is a must-see for anyone visiting Philadelphia, though some say they were disappointed with the museum's small size. Due to the nature of the exhibits, the museum is not recommended for children younger than 10.

Philadelphia's Magic Gardens Philadelphia's Magic Gardens

This mixed media art museum in South Street is a must-visit in Philadelphia, with two indoor galleries and a two-story outdoor sculpture garden. Each of the handmade tiles, bicycle wheels, mirrors, bottles and folk art pieces incorporated into the space represents an aspect of creator Isaiah Zagar's life. Zagar – who first found mosaic art as a form of therapy after suffering from severe depression and nearly taking his own life – is now an award-winning artist whose work can be found throughout the city.

Travelers say it's an intriguing, beautiful and riveting museum, and that you'll want to take your time to see everything on display. Recent visitors also recommend purchasing tickets online in advance, as entry is timed in 30-minute blocks. Children are welcome, but note that the space is too small for strollers.

Museum of the American Revolution Museum of the American Revolution

After it debuted in 2017, the Museum of the American Revolution quickly became one of the best attractions in Philadelphia. The only museum of its kind, it tells the story of this important historical event through interactive exhibits that engage visitors of all ages. Museumgoers appreciate the layout of the museum, which follows a chronological path, and note that George Washington's sleeping and office tent from the Revolutionary War is one of the highlights.

Another highlight, Revolution Place appeals to young kids with four hands-on exhibits: the "Military Encampment," with a recreated soldier's tent; the "8th Century Church;" the "Three Tun Tavern," where kids can see bottles, bowls and more that would have been used at a 1700s tavern; and the "18th Century Parlor," complete with a recreated privy (known today as an outhouse). Eastern State Penitentiary Eastern State Penitentiary

The castle-like Eastern State Penitentiary is one of Philadelphia's most important historic sites. Having opened in 1829, this Quaker-inspired prison sought to reform prisoners using isolation and reflection rather than capital punishment and physical abuse. Although it was shut down in the 1970s, the Eastern State Penitentiary led the way to reform in the judicial system. Today, you are welcome to tour this National Historic Landmark; the highlight for many is American gangster Al Capone's cell.

Bear in mind that this attraction may not be appropriate for younger children due to its rather frightening nature. To embrace the terror, visit around Halloween when the prison celebrates the spooky season with five haunted attractions.

Barnes Foundation Barnes Foundation

Art aficionados who gravitate toward French impressionist, post-impressionist and early modernist works should visit the Barnes Foundation. The museum's permanent collection features paintings by Renoir, Cézanne, Picasso, Matisse and Van Gogh, plus an impressive mix of African art, wrought-iron metalwork, Native American pottery and more.

But here's why the Barnes Foundation is so unique: Even if all of the above terms and names sound foreign to you, you'll still find something to enjoy. The museum's late founder, Dr. Albert C. Barnes, sought to teach people from all backgrounds how to appreciate art. As such, all of the museum's artwork is grouped together in what Barnes called his "ensembles" – groupings of art (objects, media and more) from a variety of time periods and cultures – designed to make visitors draw similarities they wouldn't otherwise notice.

2 Days In Philadelphia Itinerary, The Perfect Weekend Guide

Planning a short visit or weekend getaway to Philadelphia and looking for an itinerary? If so, this is the ultimate 2 days In Philadelphia itinerary.

As an East Coaster, I’ve been to Philly many times. It’s one of my favorite cities in the US, despite the flack it sometimes gets.

For history buffs, there’s no better place to visit than the City of Brotherly Love. The city wears history like an embroidered cloak.

the I heart Philly sign with City Hall in the background

Philadelphia is especially rich in Revolutionary War history, telling the vivid story of America’s fight for freedom from British rule.

It was here that the founding fathers wrote the Declaration of Independence and created a new nation in 1776.

This Philadelphia itinerary takes you to all of Philadelphia’s top must visit historic sites, historic attractions, museums, and landmarks. It also gives you tips for visiting the city and tells you what to see, do, and eat in Philadelphia.

With 2 days in Philadelphia, you can visit most of the city’s important historic landmarks and sites, peruse markets, and check out the city’s excellent museums and pretty neighborhoods.

Along the way, you can eat some absolutely delicious food, ranging from old time-y cheesesteak to exquisite haute cuisine.

To me, Philadelphia perfectly combines the beauty and excitement of a modern city with the brick and cobblestone hallmarks of the Colonial era. This DIY guide to exploring Philadelphia in two days is loaded with comprehensive tips on what to see/eat/do.

Let’s get started! You’ll be sure to fall in love with Philly.

2 Days In Philadelphia Itinerary

There are so many amazing things to do and see in Philadelphia. With just two days in Philadelphia, you’ll want to start early, be efficient, and make the most of your short time.

Philadelphia is basically divided into four sections: Center City, University City, Rittenhouse Square, and Old City. Here’s what you can find in each area:

  • Center City : Reading Terminal Market, Love Park, Philadelphia Museum of Art, luxury hotels
  • University City : University of Pennsylvania
  • Rittenhouse Square : Rittenhouse Row, shopping and dining, art galleries
  • Old City : Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, Christ Church Burial Ground

If you want to get an overview, you can book a customized private tour to see the city highlights .

Day 1 Morning:

Start your 2 days in Philadelphia with a delicious breakfast at FREIDA on Walnut Street. It’s a European-style cafe with a killer weekend brunch menu.

If you’d prefer a simple injection of caffeine, try, La Colombe Coffee Roasters or Old City Coffee Inc. You could also check out Dandelion, an English gastropub with delicious Eggs Benedict and vanilla brioche French toast.

Then head to the Old City. Philadephia’s most important historic sites are clustered here. You can easily walk from site to site.

1. Independence Hall

Start your day with a visit to Independence Hall, dubbed “America’s birthplace. You may even want to go on a founding father walking tour to get the full scoop. Or possibly a history and revolution tour for the historic backdrop.

Independence Hall was the site of a key flashpoint in U.S. history, where the dream of a free country began.

In the Assembly Room, George Washington was nominated as commander-in–chief of the Continental Army. Benjamin Franklin was appointed the first Postmaster General.

Independence Hall, a must visit on any 2 days in Philadelphia itinerary

On July 4, 1776, the Second Continental Congress gathered there to sign the Declaration of Independence. In the same room, 11 years later, the U.S. Constitution was signed.

Independence Hall once housed all three branches of Pennsylvania’s Colonia Era government. In 1979, it became a designated UNESCO Heritage site.

Entrance is free, but you’ll need to jump on a 30 minute guided tour. Tours run daily and leave every 10-15 minutes.

You just have to reserve a time online in advance here .

Betsy Ross House

2. Betsy Ross House

You may also want to check out the Betsy Ross House . This is where the first American flag was allegedly sewn.

You’ll have the chance to explore the historic home where Betsy Ross is said to have lived and worked. The house is furnished in a style that reflects the period when Betsy Ross resided there.

As you walk through the rooms, you’ll find informative exhibits, displays, and artifacts that shed light on the life of Betsy Ross and the times in which she lived.

The museum also offers interactive experiences, including the opportunity to “meet” Betsy Ross herself through costumed interpreters portraying her character and engaging with visitors in an educational and entertaining way.

the Liberty Bell, with its iconic crack

3. Liberty Bell Center

Just across the street from Independence Hall is the Liberty Bell Center .

In 1751, the Philadelphia Assembly commissioned the Liberty Bell to mark the 50th anniversary of the state’s constitution.

It was cast in the White Chapel Bell Foundry in London. Originally, the Liberty Bell was the official bell of the Pennsylvania State House (now Independence Hall). It was rung during important announcements.

The bell cracked in February 1846, when it was run to celebrate George Washington’s birthday. Since that fateful day, the bell has remained silent.

300 year old Elfreth's Alley, a designated Historic Landmark

The bell’s name comes from the quote etched into the side: “Proclaim Liberty throughout the land unto all the inhabitants thereof.” If you don’t want to wait in the long line to see it, you can peak through the window.

4. Elfreth’s Alley

Before leaving the Historic District, check out pretty Elfreth’s Alley . The cobbled lane is the oldest continuously occupied residential street in the United States.

It dates back to 1702 and is lined with adorable 300 year old houses. It’s the equivalent of Acorn Street in Boston’s Beacon Hill neighborhood . In 1966, Elfreth’s Alley became a designated National Historic Landmark.

Day 1 Afternoon:

There are plenty of options for lunch in the City Center, frequented by visitors and locals alike.

I’d opt for the eclectic offerings of the food hall in the Bourse building, another National Historic Landmark. If you want to try a classic Philly cheesecake for dessert, head to Marino Brothers there.

If you want a smaller setting, there are excellent sandwiches at High Street on Market . Or, you can indulge in some upscale comfort food at Jones .

Sadly, the historic City Tavern Restaurant, where you formerly could order off 18th century inspired menus has closed permanently.

Alternatively, Philly is a great place to go on a guided food tour . Or you can have lunch and learn about Philly on a lunchtime cruise on the Spirit of Philadelphia .

entrance to Penn's Landing in Philly

2. Waterfront

Then walk a few blocks to Penn’s Landing, Philadelphia’s waterfront playground. Located on the Delaware River, this is the perfect bucolic spot on a sunny day and a mecca for maritime buffs.

Stroll along the tree-lined promenade. If you need some river-water-fun, you can rent kayaks and paddle boats.

Or you can hop on the RiverLink Ferry over to the Camden waterfront in New Jersey, to enjoy the views of the skyline. In summer, Penn’s Landing frequently hosts movies and concerts. In winter, you can go ice skating there.

If you’re a maritime buff, Penn’s Landing is home to the Independence Seaport Museum and several storied ships. There are interactive exhibits and kids can climb through a 19th century boat.

the Barnes Foundation

But I’d advise spending the rest of the afternoon at one of Philadelphia’s fantastic museums. There are quite a few options!

Barnes Foundation

My favorite is the Barnes Foundation , created and staged by entrepreneur Albert Barnes.

This singular museum could be considered an exercise in one man’s enormous ego. Nonetheless, it’s one of the greatest private collections in the entire world.

Especially if you like Impressionism. The Barnes Foundation boasts the United States’ largest collection of Impressionism and the world’s largest collection of Renoir paintings.

The museum is second in scope only to Paris’ revered Muse e d ‘Orsay . You may feel like you’ve been power beamed to Paris .

gallery full of Renoirs in the Barnes Foundation

An eccentric Barnes sought to establish himself as a “bold and ambitious” collector.

He spent a fortune buying up Impressionist and Post-Impressionist paintings from then up and coming artists like Henri Matisse, Auguste Renoir, Paul Cezanne, and Pablo Picasso .

He amassed the world’s largest private collection of this sort, now valued at a cool $25 billion. The works are shown in the exact, if helter-skelter and unconventional, way in which Barnes originally displayed them.

Signers' Hall at the National Constitution Center

The National Constitution Center

If you want to stay in Old City, visit the National Constitution Center.

It’s a hands on museum dedicated to telling the story of the U.S. Constitution. It’s full of interactive exhibits that walk you through the creation of one of the most important documents in our country’s history.

Plus, you can get a glimpse of loads of historic artifacts. The center houses one of the few copies of the first public printing of the U.S. Constitution.

The permanent exhibits are excellent. Freedom Rising will inspire pride in your ability to vote. If you can’t get there in person, click here to book a virtual tour of the National Constitution Center.

Museum of the American Revolution

Museum Of The American Revolution

There’s also the Museum of the American Revolution , which ties together all of Philadelphia’s historic landmarks.

The museum’s collections tells the story of the lead up to the American Revolution and what life was like during and after the war.

The museum features artifacts, life size tableaux, videos, and other interactive installations. They’re spread out over four floors in an engrossing chronological journey.

Photograph: Courtesy Mütter Museum

The Mutter Museum

If you’re brave enough and a science lover, check out the Mutter Museum. Best visited on an empty stomach, the Mutter Museum is part of the Philadelphia College of Physicians.

Many of the specimens were used as teaching tools during Victorian times – conjoined twins in jars, mummified limbs, a menagerie of preserved organs, and skeletons.

You enter through the gift shop, and the first exhibit focuses on an analysis of the assassinations of Presidents Lincoln and Garfield.

It’s all rather clinical and fascinating. There are a few drawings and diagrams, as well as a couple of medical samples on display, such as a piece of skin from President Garfield.

the Rodin Museum, with a bronze cast of The Thinker

The Rodin Museum

The Rodin Museum is another one of my favorite attractions in Philadelphia. It’s an architectural jewel.

The museum houses the largest collection of French sculptor Auguste Rodin’s works outside of his eponymous museum in Paris . Rodin was the father of modern sculpture, his works a torrent of emotion.

The Rodin Museum houses some timeless Rodin classics. As you ascend the steps, you’re immediately faced with a bronze cast of The Gates of Hell , a commentary on social despair inspired by Dante’s Inferno .

You’ll also see versions of The Kiss , Balzac , The Burghers of Calais , Walking Man , many busts, and many models of hands. There’s also a lovely garden with 8 sculptures, including the famous The Thinker .

Independence Beer Garden

Day 1 Evening:

Philadelphia is a beer loving city, so some suds sampling may be in order. You could start with a happy hour drink at the outdoor Independence Beer Garden .

For a more elegant atmosphere, there’s the Stratus Rooftop Lounge , located atop the chic Hotel Monaco. Or try a cool little place called Standard Tap in Northern Liberties, a funky bohemian area.

You can also go on a guided prohibition era pub crawl . Or discover secret bars on a guided speakeasy tour .

For dinner, you’re spoiled for choice. Philadelphia has one of the United State’s most exciting and innovative foodie scenes, with chef churning out delicious eats of all varieties.

You have the triple threat of cheesesteaks, soft pretzels, and water ice. You’ll also find great burgers, brunches, street food, and Chinatown.

Raddichio Cafe

Where you choose to eat really depends on how much you want to pay.

I can vouch for the savoriness of these resraurants:

  • Zahav (modern Israeli food)
  • Modo Mio (small Italian restaurant)
  • Amada (upscale tapas, including lots of seafood dishes)
  • Radicchio Cafe (BYOB with beautifully composed Italian dishes)
  • Oyster House (all manner of seafood)
  • Kalaya Thai Kitchen (voted one of the Best New Restaurants in America in 2020.
  • La Famiglia (fine Italian food and excellent wine cellar)

If you’ve got a craving for culture, Philadelphia has a fantastic theater scene. South Broad Street is the equivalent of Broadway.

It’s so crowded with performing arts venues that it’s known as the “Avenue of the Arts.” Click here to check out the musicals, plays, concerts on offer.

Reading Terminal Market in downtown Philly

Day 2 Morning:

1. terminal market.

To kick off day 2 of your 2 days in Philadelphia itinerary, head to Reading Terminal Market for breakfast. It’s an enclosed public market found at 12th and Arch Streets in downtown Philadelphia.

Operating since 1893, Reading is one of the oldest public markets in the United States and a designated Historic Landmark.

There are around 80 merchants, including several bakeries and restaurants, so you can easily find something tasty for breakfast. If you have a sweet tooth, try out Beiler’s Bakery or Federal Donuts.

You can also taste your way around Terminal Market on a guided gourmet food tour .

Swann Memorial Fountain with City Hall In the background

2. City Hall

Just five minutes away from Reading, you can stop to admire and tour Philadelphia’s City Hall , radiating arteries to every quadrant of the city. It’s the most renowned building in the city.

The ornate Second Empire building is the largest municipal building in the United States. On the exterior, you’ll see over 200 sculptures and motifs.

The building is topped by a massive 37 foot bronze statue of William Penn, weighing 26 tons. It’s the tallest statue atop a building in the world.

In the winter, City Hall is illuminated with lights and the square is transformed into an ice rink. In the summer, streaming fountains create a kind of water garden.

Right next door to City Hall is Love Park , also known as the John F. Kennedy Plaza. That’s where you’ll find Robert Indiana’s Love and Amor sculptures.

statue of William Penn atop City Hall

Once inside, you can take a timed entry guided tour of the building. It’s a two hour tour offered just once a day.

There’s also a tower and open air observation deck (right below the Penn statue), if you want a panoramic view of Philadelphia. You can take the Tower Tour only or visit the tower as part of the City Hall Interior Tour.

3. Philadelphia Museum of Art

Then, it’s time to walk (1.6 miles) or Uber to the Philadelphia Museum of Art (“PMA”), the third largest art museum in the United States

The bronze Rocky statue, of Philadelphia’s favorite fictionalized character, is at the bottom of the museum steps just waiting for you to take a selfie.

You can channel your inner Rocky and run up the famed “Rocky” steps. You can even take a Rocky-themed guided tour .

the Rocky steps leading up to the Philadelphia Museum of Art, a must see with 2 days in Philadelphia

Once up the steps, continue around the perimeter of the building to the gazebo. You’ll have a gorgeous view of Boathouse Row. At night, 15 boathouses are lit up and reflecting on the river.

Then, enter the museum, which is Philadelphia’s crown jewel. Opened in 1929, the PMA is housed in a beautiful building, resembling a Greek temple and boasting world class art. It’s one of the premiere museums in the United States, with over 200 galleries.

There are some amazing pieces in the PMA’s permanent collection. The art works span all ages—from medieval relics to seminal Impressionist works to riveting and colorful modernist pieces.

The museum has works by artistic luminaries such as Picasso, Van Gogh, Manet, Renoir, Cassatt, Brancusi, Kahlo, Duchamp, and more.

If you have extra time on your Philadelphia itinerary, your PMA ticket grants you two day access to PMA, the Rodin Museum , Cedar Grove , and the next door Perelman Building .

The latter holds the art museum’s acclaimed fashion and textile collection and features displays of prints, drawings, photographs, and modern design.

The famous cheesesteak restaurant Pat's King of Steaks

Day 2 Afternoon:

After exploring the PMA, it’s time to grab some lunch in south Philly. This is the time to sample the city’s iconic sandwich — the cheesesteak. First timers should try the original at Pat’s King of Steaks .

Pat’s claims to be the inventor of the famous sandwich, which consists of thinly sliced steak and melted cheese on a roll.

Right across the street from the perennial heavyweight is its biggest rival, Geno’s , lit up with an orange neon sign.

1. Magic Gardens

Then head out to Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens , 15 minutes down the road. It’s a whimsical outdoor art gallery — the brainchild of Isaiah Zagar, an award-winning mosaic mural artist and native Philadelphian.

mosaics in the Magic Gardens

Known as an “immersive mixed media art environment,” it’s a stunning place to visit. The installation’s facade—and even some surrounding buildings—are plastered with bits of colored glass and shards, broken ceramics, and even bicycle spokes and wheels.

There’s a long outdoor labyrinth and tunnels. The experience continues inside, as you wind your way through 3D mosaicked hallways and step into glistening courtyards.

Timed entry tickets are just $10. Purchase them online in advance as it often sells out.

You can also sign up for a South Philadelphia walking tour that includes a visit to the Magic Gardens. South Philly is also a great place to go on an Italian market food tour .

2. Eastern State Penitentiary

If you prefer history to art, as an alternative to the Magic Gardens, you could instead visit a fascinating historic prison, Eastern State Penitentiary . It’s a National Historic Landmark, just a 10-15 minute walk from PMA.

a gloomy long cell block in the Eastern State Penitentiary

ESP covers nearly 150 years of criminal history. Creepy and foreboding, this old prison is intentionally kept in a state of “sustained ruin.” On the outside, it looks like a medieval castle with turrets and crenellated walls.

ESP was the world’s first true penitentiary with revolutionary system of incarceration that encouraged isolation in a monastic environment.

Some notorious criminals like mobster Al Capone and bank robber Willie Sutton were inmprisoned there.

The audio guide is eerily narrated by Steve Buscemi. Click here to pre-purchase a ticket.

Day 2 Evening:

Wrap up your weekend in Philadelphia with a stroll along the hip and lively South Street. South Street is the perfect place to window shop (over 400 retail shops) and admire vibrant street art.

beautiful homes on South Street

For dinner, you’re spoiled for choice on South Street.

You’ll find every brand of cuisine imaginable. Check out Serpico (global cuisine with Asian flavors), my favorite Pumpkin (modern American), Tamarind (Thai cuisine), Hardena (curries and Indonesian food), or Las Bugambilias (Tex Mex fare).

Just a block away are The Good King Tavern , the Famous 4th Street Delicatessen and Bistro La Minette .

South Street is also home to a wide variety of bars, from classic Irish pubs to hipster dive bars with names like Tattooed Mom . Live music performances can be seen at the Theatre of Living Arts .

It’s easy to choose your own adventure and have a fun night out here, especially on the weekend.

Tips For A 2 Day Philadelphia Itinerary

Here are some must know tips for visiting Philadelphia.

1. How To Get To Philadelphia

Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) is the main airport serving the city. It offers numerous domestic and international flights, making air travel one of the most convenient ways to reach Philadelphia from distant locations.

To get to your accommodation, you can rent a car or catch a taxi. Or, to make it easy you can book a private transfer to your hotel .

Amtrak operates frequent train services to Philadelphia’s 30th Street Station, one of the busiest rail hubs in the country. The station connects to major cities along the East Coast and the Midwest. From there, you can take a taxi or Uber.

Various bus companies, such as Greyhound and Megabus, also offer services to Philadelphia’s bus terminals, including the Greyhound Bus Terminal and the Megabus Stop.

townhouses near Rittenhouse Square

If you prefer driving, you can reach Philadelphia by car via major highways such as Interstate 95 (I-95) from the north and south, Interstate 76 (I-76) from the west, and Interstate 676 (I-676) from the east.

2. How To Get Around Philadelphia

The historic sites in Philly are in a compact area and within easy walking distance. Just 25 blocks separate the two rivers defining Philadelphia.

It’s a 45 minute walk from river to river. Numbered streets run north/south and named streets run east/west.

You don’t need a car in Philadelphia. In fact, a car will likely be a hindrance as parking is hard to come by and rather expensive.

To get to all of your itinerary destinations in a hurry, it’s easiest to take Uber of Lyft.

The public transportation, SEPTA, can seem a bit baffling. It’s both a beloved and hated beast. But you can check out the SEPTA site to study up on transportation options.

street art mural on South Street

You can also use the Hop On Ho p O ff Bus to get around to Philly’s main attractions.

Or, go on a fun Segway tour or trolley tour of the city.

3. Guided Tours In Philadelphia

There are a bunch of good tours you may want to invest in to explore and get around Philadelphia. You can pick one that suits you.

They include:

  • a horse drawn carriage tour of historic Philadelphia
  • a sightseeing tour by bus
  • a founding fathers walking tour
  • a constitutional walking tour
  • a nighttime ghost tour
  • a badass women’s tour of historic Philadelphia
  • a south Philly art tour
  • a brewery and bike tour

Philadelphia skyline with the Schuylkill River

4. City Passes

If you plan on visiting several pricey attractions, you might want to invest in either Go City All Inclusive Pass or the Philadelphia Explorers Pass .

The Philadelphia Pass is a smart card that gives you admission to 30 attractions. The price varies depending on the number of day (1-5 day passes are available).

At some attractions, you can skip the line using these passes, a big benefit during high season.

5. Tourist Office Locations

The main tourist office is found at the Independence Visitor Center in the Historic District, at the junction of 6th and Market Streets. There are also visitor centers at City Hall and Love Park.

fireworks at Penn's Landing

6. When to Visit Philadelphia

The best time to visit Philadelphia is in the spring or fall. Summer can be crowded and sweltering. Winter can be bitterly cold and windy. Having said that, Philadelphia has some notable wintery attractions.

Philadelphia’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is the oldest in the nation.

In the winter, Philadelphia has an authentic open air German Christmas market, Christmas Village , staged at Love Park and City Hall. You can also enjoy the Christmas Light Show at Macy’s and the Franklin Square Holiday Festival.

Philadelphia is also renowned for its razzle dazzle New Year Eve celebrations. Revelers gather at Penn’s Landing for a spectacular fireworks display.

On New Years Day, there’s a costumed Mummer’s Parade so unique that it’s been featured in National Geographic.

Library Bar at The Rittenhouse

7. Where To Stay in Philadelphia

There are some absolutely wonderful boutique hotels in Philly, my other preferred lodging option.

You can check out the The Franklin on Rittenhouse , AKA Rittenhouse Square , The Rittenhouse , or Alexander Inn .

Then, there are wonderful luxury options like the Ritz-Carlton and the Four Seasons . And the reliable standbys like the Sofitel at Rittenhouse Square , Hilton Garden , Marriott , or the Doubletree .

Rittenhouse Row, Philadelphia's toniest address

Guide to Philly

One Day in Philadelphia

One day in Philadelphia is just enough to see some of the highlights and to get a taste of what this city has to offer. There is so much to see here that it’s hard to narrow it down for a quick visit, so we’ve opted to focus on the things that truly set Philadelphia apart from other destinations.

In this itinerary, we suggest beginning the day with some of the city’s top historic sites . Then, in the afternoon, decide if you want to stick with the historic attractions or explore some of the other places to see. No matter what, you’re in for a unique experience.

Highlights include… Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell are must-sees for history lovers. Spruce Street Harbor Park provides a lively riverside experience, and Magic Gardens is a creative environment unlike anywhere else. Bok Bar offers the best skyline view in the city along with good food and drinks.

Breakfast at the Bourse Food Hall

People sitting at tables in a large room.

The Bourse is a unique space in the heart of Old City, the most historic part of town. This 125-year-old building was once home to the first commodities exchange market in the US, and it now houses an artisanal food hall featuring local businesses. It’s a great place to start out your day in Philadelphia.

For a hearty breakfast at The Bourse, head to Grubhouse . The food is excellent, and service is efficient and friendly. There are dozens of options to fuel up for your day ranging from chicken and waffles to bacon, egg, and cheese breakfast sandwiches. Our top choices are the blueberry pancakes and the sausage and pepper breakfast bowl.

Alternative : If you’re staying outside of Old City, head to Reading Terminal Market . Highlights of the remarkable market like the Dutch Eating Place –which serves Pennsylvania Dutch specialties–and Kismet Bialys are excellent options for breakfast. We also love Old City Coffee and Beiler’s Donuts , which are among the best in the city .

Visit the Liberty Bell

Large, cracked bell displayed in front of a window in a museum.

Just across the street from The Bourse in Independence Mall is the Liberty Bell. Originally known as the State House Bell, it rang in Independence Hall (then the Pennsylvania State House) beginning in the 1750s.

The Liberty Bell is free to visit. Its museum features exhibits that cover a range of topics including the making of the bell, its famous crack, and how it became one of the country’s most prominent symbols of freedom used by abolitionists and Civil Rights pioneers.

If the line is long, you can see the Bell from the outside through the glass wall on the building’s south side. It’s viewable 24 hours a day and is lit up at night.

Independence Hall

Brick building with a clock tower.

Independence Hall is a can’t miss part of any Philadelphia itinerary. It looks much like it did in 1776 when the founding fathers walked through its corridors. A free 20-minute tour takes you through a brief history of the building and the momentous events that happened inside its walls.

You’ll see George Washington’s original chair in the Assembly Room and the inkstand used to sign the Declaration of Independence in the West Wing. There is also an original draft of the Constitution on display. If you want even more history, visit Congress Hall next door (still within the secure zone). It was the meeting place of the House of Representative and the US Senate in the decade that Philadelphia was the US capital. It is also where George Washington and—eight years later—John Adams were sworn in as president, completing the nation’s first peaceful transfer of power.

Tickets are just $1 online and can be reserved here (tickets aren’t necessary in January and February outside of holiday weekends). Make sure to leave time to go through the security screening before your tour.

If your timing is flexible, see our thoughts on the best time to visit Philadelphia .

Carpenters’ Hall

Brick building with white trim and windows and a cobblestone walkway.

Carpenters’ Hall is another one of the top free places to visit in Philadelphia . It was here in 1774 that colonial delegates to the First Continental Congress voted to take a stand against the King of England. The delegates’ chairs and the original banner from the 1788 Constitutional parade are displayed in the hall , and you’ll frequently find other rotating historical exhibits. The museum is small, but it’s worth a quick visit.

In December 2022, Carpenters’ Hall was damaged by fire, but it has since been renovated and is back open to the public.

Museum of the American Revolution

Large white fabric tent on a stage with the backdrop of a field.

If your interest in Revolutionary War history runs deep, the Museum of the American Revolution is only two blocks away. Its collection includes thousands of artifacts, artworks, weapons, and more in exhibits that take you on a chronological journey from the origins of the conflict in the 1760s through the final years of the war. The star of the show is the museum’s most magnificent artifact—George Washington’s original headquarters tent—that is displayed in a dedicated theater.

The exhibits are designed to make the stories engaging for visitors of all ages and to examine points of view that have often been overlooked. We were surprised to find the perspectives of women and Native and Black Americans included, since these groups are often left out of much of the discussion about independence and the American Revolution.

A thorough visit to the museum takes around 3 hours. However, you can hit the highlights as quickly as you’d like if you want to see the museum without having it dominate your whole day.

Lunch at Spruce Street Harbor Park

Chairs, tables, and people on colorful floating platforms.

One of our favorite things to do is to visit the city’s waterfront park , which is also a great lunch destination if you’re visiting on a weekend. Spruce Street Harbor Park is the place go to when the weather is nice from May through October. It offers great views and lots of places to lounge, including hammocks that hang over the Delaware River. A selection of vendors offers Philadelphia food classics like crabfries from Chickie’s and Pete’s, tacos, or water ice.

Alternatives : If the park is closed or you would simply like a different environment, head to Talula’s Daily . This cafe-market combination has a little bit of everything to please different palates. If you’re craving a cheesesteak, Campo’s is a 5-minute walk. This Philadelphia institution has served diners since 1947, and its cheesesteaks are a solid choice.

Magic Gardens

Walls and walkway covered entirely in brightly colored mosaics.

Visiting Magic Gardens is one of the most unique things to do in Philadelphia in a day. The museum is a massive creation composed of tile and found objects such as glass bottles and bicycle wheels. Seeing the space is like walking through a giant mosaic.

Located on South Street, this one-of-a-kind experience is the creation of artist Isaiah Zagar. As you explore the painted corners and pottery-laden walls, you get the distinct feeling that the space is like the artist’s mind came to life. With indoor and outdoor components and spanning half a city block, there is a lot to see here.

Alternative s: If you’d rather continue to explore the city’s history, stay in Old City and visit Elfreth’s Alley and Christ Church . Thanks to its seasonal decorations and brightly painted doors, Elfreth’s Alley is one of the most photographed places in the city. It also happens to be the oldest residential street in the US. Visit the museum that occupies 124-126, which tells the history of the street and the tradesmen who lived here when it was built.

Rows of old tombstones in Christ Church burial ground surrounded by trees.

Nearby is Christ Church and Christ Church Burial ground. The church itself welcomed presidents and other notable figures beginning in 1695. A couple of blocks away at Fifth and Arch, the burial ground is the final resting place of many Revolutionary War figures and early leaders, including Benjamin Franklin.

It’s $5 to walk around the burial ground, but if you just want to see Franklin’s grave, it is visible through a cut-out in the northwest part of the wall. It is almost always covered with pennies–a reference to Franklin’s “a penny saved is a penny earned.”

With more time, see what to do in a weekend in Philadelphia .

The Italian Market

People eating at outdoor tables in front of a mural labeled "Di Bruno Bros, The House of Cheese."

Philadelphia’s Italian Market is one of the oldest and largest open-air markets in the country. The area was originally settled primarily by Italians beginning in the 1880s, and the market developed to serve the community.

The market spans about 10 city blocks along Ninth Street. It is filled with restaurants and vendors selling fresh produce, meats, and specialty items. One of the top purveyors of Italian products in the city, Di Bruno Bros. has a small location, a bottle shop, and ample outdoor seating. You’ll also find the famous cheesesteak spots Pat’s and Geno’s here along with restaurants like Casa Mexico , which is a must-visit if you like Mexican food (try their award-winning lamb barbacoa, if it’s available).

Browse the shops, grab a snack, watch a bocce game at Bardascino Park, and appreciate the heritage of the neighborhood. If you need an afternoon pick-me-up, grab a coffee or gelato at Anthony’s or head to Rim Cafe for cannoli and some of the best hot chocolate in the city .

Dinner at Zahav

Pits bread, hummus, and small bowls of other food on a table

Z ahav is not just one of the best restaurants in the city, it has been widely recognized as one of the best restaurants in the US over and over again. That means that if you want to partake of the delicious Israeli specialties here, you really have to plan ahead. But it’s worth the time. The hummus is amazing and the lamb shoulder with pomegranate molasses is life changing.

Alternatives : Amada serves some of the best tapas and pintxos this side of the Atlantic. There are more than 40 options for small bites and dishes of various sizes. From tortilla Española to lamb alblondigas, the selection is excellent. We particularly love the gambas al ajillo,

The critically acclaimed Vedge is another of our favorite spots. Everything they serve is vegan and absurdly delicious, so don’t be put off by the lack of meat. We love the rutabaga fondue, the grilled avocado, and anything mushroom. And everything else, too.

Nightcap at Bok Bar

Orange and pink sunset over a city skyline.

For one of the best views in the city and a welcoming atmosphere, you can’t beat Bok Bar . Formerly Bok Vocational High School, this unusual space has many of the details you would expect from a former school, which makes it fun to explore. It’s a great place to grab a drink and enjoy the sunset or a skyline view at night. It’s open from mid-April through late October.

Alternative : For a completely different environment, check out Franklin Mortgage & Investment Company . This speakeasy offers a cozy space that’s perfect for relaxed conversation plus some of the best cocktails around. Andra Hem is another fabulous option in the Rittenhouse neighborhood. Reservations are recommended for both, but especially for Andra Hem.

What happened to the African American Museum? Its apart of the Philadelphia experience. Amazing

It is a great museum. We’re fortunate to have many places worth visiting.

Looking for easy access for husband and his Walker? Many of this where on my list but walking maybe an issue. Thanks

I would suggest focusing on a few sites that are close together depending on how easy it is for him to get around. For instance, the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall are across the street from each other. Another option might be a hop-on hop-off tour, which would drop you right by the major sites.
