Jameson Distillery Midleton

Cobh to Youghal

Today, every drop of Jameson is produced in this Midleton distillery. It’s the place of whiskey making dreams, where a true Irish welcome is awaiting you. It’s here you’ll come face-to-face with the largest pot still in the world, see their micro-distillery in action, experience their live maturation warehouse, and taste their whiskeys along the way.

After your guided tour, it's time to head through the beautiful rolling Irish countryside toward the largely unspoilt and undiscovered seaside town of Youghal. No visit to Youghal is complete without a visit to the Iconic Youghal Clock Gate Tower, you will journey together with their costumed storytellers to each floor of the Tower hearing tales of hero, villain, valiant and much more.

Just accross the road is St Marys medieval Church which is one of the oldest Churches in Ireland still in use today. Then you will free time to explore local shops, the stunning strand or enjoy lunch/drinks at one of the many fine local establishments of Youghal.

Jameson Distillery Midleton

The Jameson Experience Tour is a fully guided tour around the original Midleton Distillery where you'll learn all about Jameson’s rich heritage.

Here you see the field-to-glass processes responsible for the whiskey you'll be tasting shortly.

The tour finishes with your chance to do a guided comparative tasting of three famous whiskeys, one being Jameson.

 Youghal East Cork

Youghal is an ancient town which still has it's walls built to protect the town in 1250 intact. Approximately 12feet high and 4 feet wide these walls surround the Medieval Town of Youghal and are now open to the public.

Youghal where the first potato was introduced to Ireland by Walter Raleigh. It was a strategic trade location through medieval times and you can still see traces of this today.

The Youghal Clock Gate Tower was built in 1777 and a goal(jail) but its story spans 700 years. The tour of this iconic building is a fun, fascinating and entertaining and will be one of the highlights of your trip.

Jameson Experience

Lismore Castle has a rich and varied history, the town is renowned for its early ecclesiastical history and the scholarship of Lismore Abbey.

The imposing Lismore Castle, situated on the site of the old monastery since medieval times, overlooks the town and the Blackwater valley.

The towers Lismore are definitely worth a visit they were originally built by Arthur Kelly around 1850 as a gift to his spoilt wife. He had promised her a castle but once the ornate towers were completed there was no money left for the castle. The Towers Walk is a beautiful 2Km stroll through this ornate entrance into a beautiful woodland.

A Conversation with Jameson’s Master Distiller

Dobbernationloves had an exclusive opportunity to interview Master Distiller, Brian Nation before embarking on a behind the scenes Jameson Distillery Tour.

What are the flavour characteristics of Jameson whiskey?

The original Jameson Irish Whiskey is a blend of triple distilled pot still whiskey and grain Irish whiskey that has been aged in traditional oak barrels at Midleton Distillery, crafting its signature smooth character. The nose has a light floral fragrance, peppered with spicy wood and sweet notes, followed by a balanced palate of spicy, nutty and vanilla notes accompanied with an exceptional smoothness. Jameson is triple distilled and one of a kind.

Skip through the big red doors for your Jameson Distillery Tour.

What is the most celebrated whiskey produced by Jameson?

The Jameson family has been winning awards since the distillery was founded in 1780, and today it is the world’s most awarded Irish whiskey . The original Jameson Irish Whiskey has scooped many of the world’s top whiskey awards over the years, such as Jim Murray’s Irish Whiskey of the Year.

More recently the new Jameson Bow Street 18 Years Cask Strength has stormed international tasting competitions. Unveiled in March 2018, the new pinnacle of the Jameson family stole the show at this year’s San Francisco World Spirits Competition, receiving a Double Gold Medal – success that followed a stand-out performance at the Ultimate Spirits Challenge, scoring 97 points out of 100.

Visitors meet their Jameson Distillery Tour Guide here.

What whiskey bottles do you suggest visitors sample after a Jameson Distillery Tour?

Midleton Distillery is the home of Irish whiskey, and as such we cater for all whiskey fans – from those taking the first steps on their whiskey journey up to a passionate connoisseur and collector. For beginners, the original Jameson Irish Whiskey is a silky-smooth introduction to Irish whiskey – it’s a floral, honeyed pour that is suited to enjoying neat or mixed.

PURCHASE A JAMESON DISTILLERY TOUR TICKET

I’d also recommend Jameson Black Barrel , which is triple distilled and twice charred, intensifying the taste. The whiskey is a tribute to the coopers who give their bourbon barrels an additional charring to reveal their untold richness and complexity. The time spent maturing in the barrels leads to intensified aromas of butterscotch, fudge and creamy toffee in the whiskey. Jameson Black Barrel has nutty notes in abundance, alongside the smooth sweetness of spice and vanilla, with an intense toasted wood finish.

Jameson Caskmates IPA Edition is perfectly suited to the craft beer crowd, finished in Irish IPA beer barrels to offer a floral, crisp and hoppy whiskey experience. The nose offers floral with grapefruit citrus notes and subtle orchard fruits complemented with wood shavings and a little nuttiness. The taste is a light citrus with sweet herbal notes is followed by a lingering, fresh fruit and barley finish – it’s a whiskey with a little extra hop.

Jameson Distillery Tours offer insight into the heritage of Irish whiskey production.

Jameson Experience Midleton Review: Best Ireland Whisky Tour

By: Author James McAlister

As a big lover of the amber nectar, going on Ireland whisky tour in the home of whiskey was right at the top of my wish list for our visit to Cork.

So when the Jameson Distillery Midleton invited us along to a Jameson Experience tour and a premium whiskey tasting, there was only ever going to be one answer.

A very enthusiastic yes please!

Sarah outside The Jameson Experience Midleton Cork

And yes, you read that correctly above, I said the home of whiskey.

Believe it or not, whiskey was actually invented in Ireland, not Scotland as many people wrongly believe. Just one of the things we learnt on this awesome Ireland whiskey tour.

Although even more confusingly, John Jameson who founded the Jameson brand in 1780 was originally from Scotland.

Jameson Experience Midleton Cork

Anyway, whether you’re a whisky lover or not, The Jameson Experience Midleton should be on your to do list when you visit County Cork.

It transports you back in time to when the distillery was first started and charts its course up to the modern day. Painting a picture along the way of what it was like to live and work in Ireland throughout that time.

The site itself is a beautiful series of old buildings that allow you to feel the history. We learnt about the production techniques they developed here.

Along with the processes that go into making the smooth and exquisite whiskey millions of people all over the world enjoy today.

The tour guide we had, Sarah, was really enthusiastic and knowledgeable about all things Jameson and made it a really enjoyable outing for the group.

Here I’m going to give you the lowdown on what the Jameson tour involves, a bit of what we learnt and why you should visit the Jameson Distillery Midleton.

Jameson whiskey barrel

P.s. You may also be wondering why I’ve spelt the name of the spirit in question two different ways – there’s a very simple explanation for that.

The Scots (and pretty much everyone else in the world) call it whisky, while the Irish and Americans call it whiskey with an ‘e’. Why? Don’t ask me, that’s just how it is!

Jameson Experience Tour Info

  • The Jameson Experience guided tour lasts 60 minutes.
  • It includes a short film and tour of the Midleton distillery buildings.
  • Plus a complimentary glass of Jamesons or whiskey cocktail.
  • Accompanied children are allowed on the Jameson Experience tour.

A Brief History of the Jameson Brand

Jameson whiskey’s history is both varied and fascinating, and the Jameson tour Cork charts its many ups and downs.

These include growing steadily through exports before being badly affected by war, prohibition and the temperance movement , right up to being the world’s leading Irish whiskey today.

Jameson truck on Ireland whisky tour

John Jameson took over the management of the original distillery in Bow Street, Dublin in 1780.

Production quickly increased as Jameson built an international reputation for making a smooth whiskey from the finest quality ingredients.

The move to Midleton was a logical one that saw the Jameson distillery move closer to the barley farms they bought from and allowed for increased production.

Jameson factory

Then in the 1970s, a state of the art facility was built next to the old Midleton distillery and all production was moved there.

The Midleton whiskey tour doesn’t include the modern facility but it’s clearly visible in the background as you walk around the grounds. An interesting contrast to the old Irish whisky distillery next door.

Jameson Distillery Tour Cork

The craft distillery room.

The craft distillery room is a newly developed addition to the complex. It’s a bit like a science lab where the Midleton whiskey distillery boffins try out exciting new recipes.

They also test out varieties of old recipes that were hand written by John Jameson himself all those years ago. To produce small batches that will no doubt become collectors items of the future.

It’s an exact replica of a traditional Irish whisky distillery, just in miniature.

Jameson distillery Ireland

The Still House

This is where the magic used to happen and the distillation process itself would take place.

Inside the still house, three of the original pot stills from the 1800s remain. They’re basically huge copper vessels that capture the alcoholic vapour produced when you heat up the fermented liquid you’re going to purify.

One of them is actually the largest still in the whole world, capable of holding over 140,000 litres! That would keep me going for a while.

The Giant Water Wheel

The giant water wheel sits on the outside wall of one the Midleton distillery buildings and was at one stage used to produce most of the power required.

Amazingly it’s still turning! And although it’s no longer a power source, gives you an idea of just how advanced the brewery was for its time.

The Cooperage

One of the really interesting things about the whiskey making process is just how much attention to detail that go into making a great one.

Once the liquid has been distilled, it must then be aged in barrels. The type of barrel used has a definitive impact on what the end product tastes like.

Using barrels that have been used to age other spirits imparts certain characteristics into the whiskey. For example the sweetness from a sherry barrel.

Jameson don’t actually produce any of the barrels they use, but they buy them in from various different sources. Rather than construct the barrels, the cooper ensures they are fit for purpose and repairs them when necessary.

Whiskey barrel on the Jameson experience tour

The barrels get retired after 20 years, at which stage they go on sale to anyone who wishes to own one. A single barrel will set you back a cool £75,000.

And remember, they’re empty…

The Head Distiller’s Cottage

Though we didn’t go inside, it was fascinating to learn about the long line of head distillers who were given the use of this cottage for the duration of their employment.

From the front it looks like a small bungalow, but when you see it from side on you realise it is in fact huge and goes back much further than you’d imagine.

The Jameson Bar

At the end of the Jameson whiskey tour your ticket entitles you to a free sample of Jameson’s! Yes free!

Jameson whiskey tour tasting session

You get the option of having it straight up, on the rocks or in a cocktail mixed with ginger beer and a squeeze of lime.

It’s a generous serving of whiskey as well and almost the perfect way to finish off the tour.

Jameson Premium Whiskey Tasting

Now this is officially the perfect way to finish off the Jameson tour Cork, particularly if you’re a whisky lover like me.

This premium whiskey tasting allows you to sample four of the many varieties that Jameson produce, while a connoisseur talks you through each one.

Jameson Premium Whiskey Tasting

Whiskey Tasting Experience Info

  • The whiskey tasting experience lasts 20 minutes.
  • During which you’ll taste and compare four of the Midleton Distilleries’ premium whiskeys
  • With a with a whiskey expert to talk you through the tastings.
  • The Whiskey Tasting Experience is for over 18’s only.

The Jameson Shop

The Jameson shop has everything from rare whiskeys to Jameson branded clothing. It’s the perfect place to round off your Jameson Experience Midleton and pick up some souvenirs or gifts for whiskey lovers.

You can also hand bottle your own cask strength bottle of Jameson whiskey straight from the barrel. And then produce a unique label to stick on it with your name on which is really cool.

Jameson distillery Midleton

I’ve been a big fan of whisky for over 10 years now and over that period built up quite a nice collection of aged single malt scotch whiskies.

But I must confess, I’d never taken a great deal of notice of Irish whiskey, apart from the odd drop of Jameson from time to time.

There is a bit of a misconception that scotch is in some way superior to Irish whiskey, but actually that’s really not true.

Yes, there are definitely differences in the characteristics of the spirits produced in each country, but Ireland produces some of the finest whiskeys in the world.

Yet to be convinced? Book onto the Jameson Experience Midleton and see for yourself!

How To Get To The Midleton Distillery

If you haven’t hired a car in Ireland , or even if you have but aren’t taking to the Midleton distillery tour, because…you know alcohol, there’s a few different ways to get to the Jameson distillery Cork.

Truck on Jameson distillery tour Cork

There are a regular trains throughout the day departing from Cork’s Kent Station to Midleton.

There are numerous local bus services running everyday. The nearest bus stop to the Jameson factory Midleton is at the end of Distillery Walk.

The Ireland Whiskey Tour Guide: 17 Of The Best Whiskey Distilleries In Ireland To Visit

The topic of the best whiskey distilleries in Ireland tends to cause a fair bit of debate online.

Now, while there’s nothing wrong with ordering a great Irish whiskey at a bar or pouring one for yourself at home, a tour of a working distillery is a far more immersive experience.

Those that head off on an Ireland whiskey tour can learn how the famous old drink is made and hear a few tales of craftsmanship and local history along the way.

From the 400-year-old Bushmills on the far north coast down to the rugged Atlantic beauty of Clonakilty in County Cork, here are 17 of the best whiskey distilleries in Ireland that you can visit in 2022.

1. Pearse Lyons Distillery

 Pearse Lyons

A distillery in a church? Yes, you read that correctly. Founded by the late Pearse Lyons in the Liberties district of Dublin, his boutique distillery is a unique spot to learn about the brewing and distilling processes.

Set inside the impressively restored St James’ Church on James St, there are four separate tours to choose from (including a VIP tour lead by the head distiller) so you’ll have plenty of ways to discover the secret behind Lyons’ style.

2. Tullamore D.E.W. Distillery

Tullamore Dew

Created in 1829 and later prospering under general manager Daniel E Williams (hence D.E.W. in the name), Tullamore D.E.W is the second largest selling brand of Irish whiskey globally.

The 105-minute (very precise, I know! tour now takes place in a state-of-the-art Distillery and you’ll be welcomed with an Irish Coffee before heading off on your merry way.

Take a tour and hear about the characters behind this famous old brand and get an insight into the art of Irish whiskey-making.

3. Teeling Whiskey Distillery

Teeling’s Whiskey

The first new distillery in Dublin for 125 years, the Teeling Whiskey Distillery is only a stone’s throw from where the original family distillery stood.

Located in the heart of the Golden Triangle, Dublin’s historic distilling district, Teeling opened in 2015 and is part of the area’s vibrant whiskey revival.

Book a tour and learn about Walter Teeling’s original craft distillery on Marrowbone Lane where he was pouring drams of his finest for locals back in 1782.

Thankfully, this promises to be a far more comfortable experience than industrial 18th century Dublin.

4. Roe & Co Distillery

Roe and Co Distillery

The Dublin whiskey revival is coming thick and fast and Roe & Co Distillery is latest on the block.

Named after legendary 19th-century whiskey pioneer George Roe, Roe & Co opened their doors in 2019 at the iconic and imposing Guinness Power House.

Take a tour to hear more about the story of George Roe, the golden era of Irish whiskey and why his famous distillery closed in 1926. There’s even a cocktail bar if whiskey isn’t your thing (though it very much should be).

5. Jameson Distillery Bow St.

Jameson Distillery

Ireland’s most famous whiskey also happens to be the proud owner of the world’s most-visited whiskey tour.

Opened way back in 1780 by John Jameson, the distillery on Bow St in Smithfield has been a staple of Dublin life for over two centuries.

And while Jameson moved the bulk of their operations down to County Cork in 1975, tourists still flock to this old place.

Tours include whiskey tasting (of course), a bit of storytelling and a complimentary drink at JJ’s Bar.

6. Jameson Distillery Midleton

Complete the Jameson whiskey story by heading down to Midleton in County Cork for a truly vivid window into Jameson’s processes and secrets.

Now almost 50 years since the big move from Dublin, the proximity to freshwater, barley farmers and the extra space gave the company ample room to expand the business.

Less than 30 minutes from Cork, the Midleton distillery is a great spot to spend a day out of the city.

Take a deep dive into this Irish icon with their Behind the Scenes tour, a two-hour extended tour where you’ll come out the other side knowing everything worth knowing about Jameson.

7. Slane Irish Whiskey Distillery

Often associated with epic gigs and huge crowds, Slane’s whiskey is big on taste too (although an enormous concert probably isn’t the best place to appreciate all its notes and nuances).

The Boyne Valley’s clear water and lush soil provides a fine base for Slane’s triple casked whiskey.

Only a 50-minute drive from Dublin, the immersive distillery tour is an hour long and takes place in the 250-year-old stables of Slane Castle. There’s also an option to combine your distillery tour with the famous old castle itself.

Traveller tip: I know several people that visited this place last year. By all accounts, this is one of the best whiskey distilleries in Ireland that’s still slightly off people’s radar – get here sharpish!

8. Kilbeggan Distilling Co.

Kilbeggan Distillery

Kilbeggan Distillery in County Westmeath has had a turbulent time of it over the years but the people of Kilbeggan made sure the old place never faded away.

Established in 1757, it claims to be Ireland’s oldest licenced distillery and after battling through a painful closure in 1953, it was revived by locals 30 years later who’ve kept it going ever since.

Take a tour to hear the inspiring story of Kilbeggan’s perseverance and enjoy a drop of their best too.

9. Sliabh Liag Distillers

Sliabh Liag Distillers

Out on the rugged Atlantic coast of south Donegal is where you’ll find Sliabh Liag Distillers .

The first distilling company in this part of the world for 175 years, they pride themselves on being embedded into the community and having a distillery located in a beautiful yet savage coastal landscape.

Only the gin distillery is available for a tour currently (although you wouldn’t say no to that) however the Ardara whiskey distillery should be operational at some point in late 2020.

10. Powerscourt Distillery

Powerscourt Whiskey Distillery

Hovering at the foot of the Wicklow Mountains, Powerscourt Distillery is conveniently located in a scenic spot that’s only a short drive south of Dublin.

Set in The Old Mill House, this distinctive distillery was many years ago at the heart of the local farming community. Tours are available from Friday to Sunday.

There’s also a golf course next door if you fancy a round but you’ll probably need a serious handicap should you take the whiskey tour beforehand.

11. The Dublin Liberties Distillery

Dublin Liberties Distillery

Back in Dublin, there’s the Dublin Liberties Distillery , set, naturally, in the district from which it takes its name.

A modern, state-of-the-art distillery on Mill St, the visitor experience is immersive and contains a cocktail bar if you want to stick around afterwards.

You’ll hear all the stories about the Liberties district, stretching back hundreds of years to when it was outside of the official Dublin city limits (and thus its laws and taxes). Expect tales of trade, conflict and debauchery.

12. The Old Bushmills Distillery (the oldest of the many whiskey distilleries in Ireland)

On the wild north coast of Ireland, the Bushmills Distillery has stood proud for over 400 years, making it one of the oldest whiskey distilleries in Ireland. Established in 1608, it claims to be the oldest licensed distillery in the world.

With water sourced from the River Bush and named after the mills that made the Barley, Bushmills is an Irish whiskey icon.

And if unusual rock formations are your thing, then check out the remarkable Giants Causeway too as it’s only a stone’s throw from the distillery.

13. Waterford Distillery

Waterford Distillery

Distilling since 2015, Waterford Distillery ’s state-of-the-art facility on the banks of the river Suir is an imposing sight. Some of Ireland’s finest single malts are created inside, however, and visits are by appointment only.

Owner Mark Reynier was once told that the best barley in the world came from Waterford. If you want to find out if that’s true, then you’ll have to make the trip down to Ireland’s sunny south-eastern coast.

14. Royal Oak Distillery

Royal Oak Distillery

Photos via Royal Oak Distillery on Twitter

Don’t ever let it be said that distilleries can’t multitask. County Carlow’s Royal Oak Distillery is the first to distil all three styles of Irish whiskey – pot still, malt and grain – under one roof.

It’s also the largest manual distillery in Ireland so there’s plenty of room here to appreciate the many strings to Royal Oak’s bow.

There are three tour options including the special Connoisseurs Choice tour with three tastings of select limited-edition whiskies.

Update:  This distillery no longer does tours

15. Clonakilty Distillery

Clonakilty Distillery

Down on the bright south Cork coast lies Clonakilty Distillery . Single pot still whiskey is Clonakilty’s game and they do it well, so take a tour of their windswept distillery and see how it all works.

They also have an elegant cask room where your guide will explain how different woods change the character of the whiskey as it matures.

And if the science makes little sense, then just sit back and enjoy the many flavours of this spot’s unique whiskey.

16. Dingle Distillery (one of the most popular whiskey distilleries in Ireland)

Dingle Distillery

Photo left: Failte Ireland. Others: Fennell Photography

The Dingle Peninsula out in west Kerry has long been one of Ireland’s supreme beauty spots so it’s no surprise that the town of Dingle has its fair share of pubs and bars.

And since 2012, the Dingle Whiskey Distillery has been distilling some excellent single pot still whiskey for those who can’t handle any more pints.

Take a trip on the Dingle Whiskey Experience tour to get the inside story on how this independent family-owned business got started.

Traveller tip: The Dingle Distillery is one of the most popular whiskey distilleries in Ireland – make sure that you book a ticket in advance!

17. The Ballykeefe Distillery

Ballykeefe Distillery

Photos via Ballykeefe Distillery on FB

While the Ballykeefe Distillery has only been in operation since 2017, it’s situated on land that has a distilling heritage going back hundreds of years.

So much so that, with records of distilling going back to 1324, it’s claimed that this area of county Kilkenny is the birthplace of Irish whiskey.

Hear more about the medieval origins of Irish whiskey on The Ballykeefe Experience where they’ll also explain the family farm traditions and about their commitment to sustainability.

Have you been on a whiskey tour in Ireland that we’ve missed?

There are heaps of different whiskey distilleries in Ireland that you can drop into for a tour and a drink.

I’ve no doubt that we’ve unintentionally missed some in the guide above. If you’ve been on a whiskey tour in Ireland recently that you’d recommend, let me know in the comments below.

Irish whiskey distilleries FAQs

We’ve had a lot of questions over the years asking about everything from ‘Which do the best tours?’ to ‘Which are the oldest?’.

In the section below, we’ve popped in the most FAQs that we’ve received. If you have a question that we haven’t tackled, ask away in the comments section below.

How many whiskey distilleries are there in Ireland?

There are, at the time of typing, over 30 Irish whiskey distilleries in operation, with the number thought to be around the 32 mark.

What is the largest whiskey distillery in Ireland?

The world-famous Midleton Distillery in County Cork is the largest of the many Irish whiskey distilleries, and it’s arguably one of the most famous, too.

What is Ireland’s oldest whiskey distillery?

This is a topic that causes a lot of chatter. The Kilbeggan Distillery (1757) claims that it’s the oldest, saying that, while the Bushmills Distillery was granted a license to distill in 1608, it didn’t distill under its current name until the 1780s.

These needs some correction, as the old warehouse down by the river in Tullamore closed in 2020. Tours are now done at the visitor center outside of town in the new distillery.

While the new facility is nice, "picturesque riverside location in Tullamore and the elegant exterior" no longer apply.

Thanks Tom - I've updated that now. Appreciate you taking the time to mention this.

Top 5 things to see and do in cork.

The famous Blarney Castle in Cork, Ireland

1. Kiss the Blarney Stone

Built nearly 600 years ago, Blarney Castle is now in partial ruin. However, at the top lies the Stone of Eloquence, more commonly known as the Blarney Stone. Here visitors hang upside down to kiss it for good luck. Numerous legends surround the stone and its power. Some believe that it was brought to Ireland after the Crusades, or that Cormac Laidir MacCarthy (a 15th-century Irish chieftain) was told of its power after saving a witch from drowning. Others believe that the stone absorbed the magical tears of a fairy queen as she wept for her beloved. Either way, for 200 years people from around the world have made the pilgrimage to receive the stone’s luck — including Winston Churchill, Sir Walter Scott, Mick Jagger, and Ronald Reagan. While the stone is neat, I personally think the gardens are the real prize here where you can stroll along the paths through 60 acres of pristine gardens and admire plants from around the world.

2. Tour Bantry House

Dating to 1730, this historic manor (originally known as Blackrock) is known for its art collection and tapestries. Probably one of its most redeeming features, however, is the fantastic view over Bantry Bay as well as its lovely gardens. The luxurious décor and gorgeous natural setting make this an ideal place to spend an afternoon, and perhaps even overnight as several of the stately rooms have been converted into B&B accommodations. On a sunny day, you can visit the Bantry House Tea Room and purchase a takeaway picnic with wine to enjoy in the extensive gardens. Admission is 14 EUR.

3. See Mizen Head

Ireland’s southernmost point, Mizen Head is the tip of the peninsula near Cork. It’s an iconic stopping point along Ireland’s famed Wild Atlantic Way and is located along an important transatlantic shipping route. Over the years, Mizen Head has served as the first sighting of European land for many sailors. Make a point of climbing the 99 steps and walking the suspension bridge to enjoy the crashing Atlantic as it smashes against this stunning landscape. Once you cross the bridge you’ll find a lighthouse, a weather station, and a signal station. The old signal station now serves as a museum commemorating the Mizen Head’s historical importance.

4. Wander the English Market

Dating to 1788, this is one of the oldest covered markets in Ireland (and Europe ). In its earliest days it functioned as a meat market, but the original building was lost in a fire. The building that houses the English Market today dates to the mid 19th century and is celebrated for its Victorian-inspired design, stained glass windows, archways, and a central cast iron fountain. Besides offering a wide array of world foods to sample, the market also plays host to boutiques and department stores as well as a handful of restaurants and cafes. If you’re cooking some of your own food, the market is an excellent place to shop for fresh local produce as well as traditional cheeses and baked goods. Locals travel for miles to shop for the best seafood and meat in Cork.

5. Hike around Gougane Barra

Gougane Barra is a settlement and protected forest near Gougane Barra Lake at the mouth of the River Lee. There’s a beautiful loop around the lake that you can hike as well as an old monastery on a small island. Legend says the original structure was built in the 6th century by Saint Finbarr. More recent ruins from a hermitage built by a priest named Denis O’Mahony remain on the island. During the Penal Laws period (a time of religious oppression), the area became a retreat for Catholics to celebrate mass. Now, a more modern chapel with a beautiful interior sits close to the ruins. The area has been reforested in recent years and you can enjoy 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) of hiking trails through woodland with over twenty species of native and non-native trees.

Other Things to See and Do in Cork

1. visit baltimore fishing village.

This charming fishing town is located 90 minutes from Cork. It started as an English colony in 1600 but was eventually sacked, devolving into a haven for pirates for almost two centuries. Today, Baltimore is a lovely place to relax with its colorful houses, quiet streets, and coastal views. You can explore local pubs, go fishing, whale watching, or scuba diving around shipwrecks in the bay. If you have time, take the ferry to one of the nearby islands. Cape Clear has prehistoric and Neolithic archaeological sites and Sherkin is known for its Franciscan friary, arts, and handicrafts.

2. See the Cork Butter Museum

At this unique museum, you can learn about all things butter. You’ll learn how butter was first made in Ireland, how they used to preserve butter in bogs, and how the commercial butter trade blossomed here into a huge industry. While it’s a quirky museum it’s also super informative and unlike any other museum you’ll visit! Admission is 5 EUR.

3. Visit the Church of Saint Anne Shandon

Shandon, meaning “Old Fort” in Gaelic, was one of the original settlements in medieval Ireland. Located just across the River Lee, this church was completed in 1726 on the site of an even older church that dated back to the 12th century. You can climb the 132 steps to the top of the church’s bell tower to take in the view (it’s one of the best in Cork). You can also ring the church bells when you get to the top (though this is currently on pause due to COVID). Admission is 5 EUR. Be sure to dress respectfully as this is a place of worship.

4. Learn about (and sample some) whiskey

If you’re a whiskey fan, take a tour of the Jameson Distillery and see how Irish whiskey is made. Jameson is one of the oldest whiskey companies in Ireland and is the best-selling Irish whiskey in the world. On a tour, you’ll visit the main buildings and learn how their whiskey is made and how the company got started. There are several different tours, but the Jameson Distillery Experience tour is the best value at 23 EUR. It’s 75 minutes and includes a whiskey sample.

5. Escape to Doneraile Wildlife Park

This park has over 400 acres of deciduous trees, herds of deer, and numerous walking paths. There are canals and ponds too. Located within the park is Doneraile Estate, an early 18th-century manor built by Arthur St Leger, the 1st Viscount of Doneraile. The grounds are well-maintained and resemble historic landscaped parks from the 18th and 19th centuries. From April-October, guided tours of Doneraile Court are available for 8 EUR. It’s just 45 minutes north of Cork by car.

6. Visit the Lewis Glucksman Gallery

Located on the University College Cork campus, The Glucksman is an exquisite gallery housed in an award-winning building made of limestone, timber, and steel (it won Ireland’s ‘Best Public Building’ design award in 2005). The gallery has three display areas, all with rotating exhibits as well as a basement café with surprisingly delicious food. Admission is free (suggested donation is 5 EUR). Check the website to see what exhibitions are on during your visit.

7. Explore the Cork City Gaol

This was a jail until the early 20th century when prisoners were moved and the gaol was left empty. The jail was considered the finest in the country when it was built and looks like a small castle. It remained empty until 1927 when Cork’s first radio station, 6CK, began broadcasting in the main building. The radio station remained at the jail until the 1950s. In 1993, the jail was reopened as a tourist attraction. Admission is 10 EUR.

8. Attend a festival

Cork comes alive in the summer with all kinds of festivals and events. Midsummer Festival, an arts festival with music, theatrical performances, and artwork, is held every June/July. In September, the Cork Oyster Festival is a succulent treat, and the Cork Folk Festival and Cork Jazz Festival both take place in October. In November, the Cork Film Festival showcases both national and international films. In short, there are always tons of events and festivals happening so be sure to check with the Cork Tourist Information Centre on arrival to see what’s happening during your visit.

9. Go stand-up paddle boarding

One of the most unique ways to explore the city of Cork is by stand-up paddleboarding on the River Lee. Tours are organized by Cork City SUP and include 90 minutes of SUP on the river. You’ll cover around 3 kilometers and see several historic bridges and landmarks. Tours are scheduled during high tide when the current is smoother and gentler so no experience is required. The tours cost 40 EUR.

Cork Travel Costs

The lush, sprawling landscapes of County Cork, Ireland

Hostel prices – A bed in a dorm with 4-6 beds costs around 28-40 EUR per night. There’s no real difference in prices between summer and off-season. Private rooms start at 65 EUR. Free Wi-Fi is standard and most hostels here have self-catering facilities.

For those traveling with a tent, camping is possible outside of the city. A basic tent plot for two people without electricity starts at 14 EUR.

Budget Hotel prices – Budget hotels start at 99 EUR in the peak season and 75 EUR in the off-season. Expect basic amenities like free Wi-Fi, a TV, and a coffee/tea maker.

Airbnb is available around the city with private rooms averaging around 40 EUR per night. You can find entire homes starting around 80 EUR. Expect prices to double if you don’t book in advance.

Food – Ireland is very much a “meat and potatoes” country. Potatoes have been a common staple since the 18th century and seafood has been a staple for as long as people have lived here (it’s an island after all!). Cod, salmon, and oysters are some of the most popular seafood options, with other staple dishes being shepherd’s pie, black pudding, bacon and cabbage, fish and chips, and meat stews.

A traditional meal costs around 15 EUR. For a multi-course meal with a drink, expect to pay at least 35 EUR. Fast food (think McDonald’s) starts at 9 EUR for a combo meal.

Pizza costs 13-15 EUR for a medium while Chinese food costs around 12-14 EUR for a main dish. Fish and chips can be found for around 10 EUR. Beer is 5 EUR while a latte/cappuccino is 3.50 EUR. Bottled water is 1.50 EUR.

If you want to cook your meals, expect to pay 40-60 EUR per week for groceries that include basic staples like pasta, rice, produce, and some meat or fish.

Backpacking Cork Suggested Budgets

On a backpacking budget of 65 EUR per day, you can stay in a hostel dorm, cook all your meals, limit your drinking, take public transportation to get around, and do free and cheap activities like kissing the Blarney Stone and wandering the parks and markets. If you plan on drinking, add another 10-20 EUR to your daily budget.

On a mid-range budget of 140 EUR per day, you can stay in a private hostel room or Airbnb, eat out for most meals at cheap fast food places, have a couple of drinks, take the occasional taxi, and do more paid activities like stand-up paddleboarding or visiting the gaol.

On a “luxury” budget of 245 EUR or more per day, you can stay in a hotel, eat out anywhere you want, drink more, rent a car for day trips, and do as many tours and excursions as you want. This is just the ground floor for luxury though. The sky is the limit!

You can use the chart below to get some idea of how much you need to budget daily, depending on your travel style. Keep in mind these are daily averages — some days you’ll spend more, some days you’ll spend less (you might spend less every day). We just want to give you a general idea of how to make your budget. Prices are in EUR.

Cork Travel Guide: Money-Saving Tips

While there’s nothing here that really costs a ton of money, you do need to watch your spending if you’re hitting the pubs. Here are some tips to help you save money in Cork:

  • Eat the pub food – Eat at the pubs for hearty Irish food that won’t destroy your wallet. It won’t be healthy, but it will be affordable!
  • Skip the pub drinks – Ireland’s strong pub culture can hit your wallet hard. Temper the cost by visiting happy hours, drinking at home, nursing your beer, or skipping drinks altogether.
  • Use student discounts – If you have a student ID, ask for discounts. Most attractions offer them and you can save a ton of money on activities.
  • Get the Leap Card – With a Leap Card, you can travel on Bus Éireann for less than the cash fare. Cards can be purchased at shops throughout Cork, as well as online.
  • Get an OPW Heritage Card – If you love to tour heritage sites, pick up one of these cards. It guarantees free access to many attractions around the country, including tons of castles. The card costs 40 EUR for adults. This is a must for people visiting multiple cities in the country.
  • Stay with a local – Couchsurfing connects you with locals who can give you a free place to stay and teach you about their city. I love this service a lot and highly recommend you try to use it to meet people!
  • Eat early – Many restaurants have budget dinner options if you eat early (usually before 6pm). You won’t have as much variety since it’s a set menu, but it will be cheaper!
  • Bring a water bottle – The tap water here is safe to drink so bring a reusable water bottle to save money and reduce your plastic use. LifeStraw is my go-to brand as their bottles have built-in filters to ensure your water is always clean and safe.

Where to Stay in Cork

Cork doesn’t have a lot of hostels so you’ll need to book early to secure a spot. Here are my suggested places to stay:

  • Bru Bar & Hostel
  • Sheilas Cork Hostel

How to Get Around Cork

One of the many relaxing, green parks in Cork, Ireland

Public transportation – Cork’s bus network is run by Bus Éireann, which has good coverage throughout the city. A single fare costs 1.55 while a day pass costs 4.40 EUR. You can also buy a day pass for 4.50 EUR or a week-long pass for 18.60 EUR.

Taxi – Taxis in Cork charge an initial fare of 4.50 EUR, then 2.22 EUR per kilometer after that. The bus covers pretty much everything though so skip the cabs if you can — they add up fast!

There are no ridesharing apps like Uber here.

Bicycle – The city has a bike-share program with 32 stations and 330 bikes. A security deposit of 150 EUR is required and a 3-day subscription is 3 EUR. The first 30 minutes of each ride are free. After that, it’s 0.50 EUR for the first hour, 1.50 EUR for two hours, 3.50 EUR for three hours, and 4.50 for four hours. Every hour after that is a 0.50 EUR increase. However, if you return the bike every 30 minutes you won’t have to pay the hourly fee.

Car rental – Car rentals here can be found for as little as 25 EUR per day for a multi-day rental. You won’t need a vehicle to get around the city, however, they can be handy for exploring the region and doing day trips. Renters need to be at least 21 years old. Also, keep in mind that they drive on the left in Ireland.

When to Go to Cork

Cork’s temperate climate makes for a good destination to visit year-round, keeping in mind that you’re likely to encounter lots of rain throughout your visit (especially in the fall and winter).

In winter, temperatures rarely fall below freezing and the average high sits around 5°C (49°F) per day. Expect brisk, windy weather with lots of rain. Unless you’re planning to just visit museums and stay indoors, I’d avoid visiting during the winter. The weather is tolerable, but it’s far from ideal.

The summer (June-August) is the warmest and busiest time to visit. Average temperatures hover between 15-20°C (59-68°F) and can climb up to 25°C (77°F). The city is lively and fun during this time, though you’ll want to book in advance since the hostels are few and far between and can fill up.

Shoulder seasons (April-May and September-October) are excellent times to visit as the temperatures are still mild and the city isn’t busy. While rain is common, the weather is still nice enough for hiking and exploring on foot. Just be sure to book in advance if you’re coming for St. Patrick’s Day as the city fills up fast. Bring a rain jacket too!

How to Stay Safe in Cork

Cork is very safe and the risk of violent crime here is low. That said, scams and pickpocketing can occur on crowded public transportation and at busy bars so always keep your valuables out of reach.

If you’re going out to the pub at night, only bring the cash you need. Leave the rest locked up in your accommodation.

Scams here are rare, but if you’re worried about getting ripped off you can read about common travel scams to avoid here .

If you rent a car, don’t leave valuables inside the vehicle overnight. While break-ins are rare, they can still occur.

Solo female travelers should generally feel safe here, however, the standard precautions apply (never leave your drink unattended at the bar, never walk home alone intoxicated, etc.).

If you do experience an emergency, dial 112 or 999 for assistance.

The most important piece of advice I can offer is to purchase good travel insurance. Travel insurance will protect you against illness, injury, theft, and cancellations. It’s comprehensive protection in case anything goes wrong. I never go on a trip without it as I’ve had to use it many times in the past.
