Joolz Aer+ review

Joolz Aer+

While it's common to seek out the best travel system when you first have a baby, you may want to opt for something a little lighter as your child grows up, such as a travel pushchair .

The follow-up to the popular Joolz Aer , the Joolz Aer+ with cot combines the best of both worlds: a lightweight buggy that you can also swap out to use with a cot.

Joolz Aer+ with cot

Testing the Joolz Aer+ with cot

As a first-time mum, I was keen to have a travel system as our main pushchair because I liked the flexibility of being able to use a cot or infant car seat with the frame. However, as much as I adore my Bugaboo Fox 5 , I was also aware there would be times that something lighter would come in handy, especially with the holidays coming up and being someone who isn't the strongest when it comes to storing a travel system in a car boot. Enter, the Joolz Aer+.

The Joolz Aer+ with cot came neatly bundled together in two boxes, one for the buggy and another for the cot. My husband was pleased to find that (after having spent a lot of time building baby gear) when it came to assembly, there was nothing to do apart from pulling out the Joolz Aer+ from its handy travel pouch.

Joolz Aer+ packaging

Removing the pushchair seat to replace it with the newborn cot was admittedly a little trickier but realistically, you're only going to be doing this the once so it's not too much of a hardship.

Design and quality

There's no doubt about it, this pushchair is a really good-looking piece of baby kit. And as well as looking great, the fabrics of the Joolz Aer+ are made from 100 per cent recycled PET bottles which is a really nice sustainable touch that I appreciate. There are a number of colour choices with the Joolz Aer+, with four new ones having been introduced recently: forest green, sandy taupe, space black and our choice - stone grey.

Joolz Aer+ cot and bassinet

Compact fold

As you'd imagine, as the Reviews Editor for a parenting website, I've seen how a lot of pushchairs fold and the Joolz Aer+ is up there with the best when it comes to ease and smoothness. Once the brake has been applied, you use one hand to simply hold down both the main button and the safety button directly underneath it with your thumb and fold the pushchair. It will automatically fold into a standing position.

To unfold, you once again press in the safety button and hold down the main button at the same time and then lift upwards to release the entirety of the buggy which will click into place. And that's it!

As you'd expect from a compact stroller that can fit in the overhead locker of a plane, the Joolz Aer+ is seriously small once folded. Fitting neatly in the accompanying travel bag, I love how easy it is to store in our home when not in use.

Joolz Aer+ folded

I was pleased to find the Joolz Aer+ can also be folded when the bassinet cot is attached, so there's no need to remove it. After applying the brake, you need to push back the canopy and then push in on the safety button on the edge of the bassinet and pull up on the lever which releases the bassinet. Then you want to go back to the same two buttons on the pushchair handle which will collapse the Aer+ with the cot. It needs a further press to lock everything in place but then you're good to go.

As when in the pushchair formation, there's a carry strap to use over your shoulder although being bulkier when folded than the buggy seat, it won't fit in the travel bag.

joolz aer travel system

Available to buy separately or as part of a package with the pushchair, the Joolz Aer+ cot is still a really compact size when added to the pushchair frame which is exactly what I was hoping for in comparison to my bulky travel system.

Aer+ cot

It comes complete with a breathable mattress to keep your newborn comfy and just like with the pushchair, the extendable sun hood has a mesh panel for airflow.

Joolz Aer+ cot canopy

Comfort and safety

Any parent wants to know their offspring are two things when using a baby product: safe and comfortable.

The seat unit of the Joolz Aer+ is really generous in both width and height and would be ideal for taller babies. The harness is easy to adjust one-handed with a 5-point buckle so your youngster is safely strapped in.

The UPF 50+ sun hood ensures your youngster is protected at all times with great coverage and this can be extended further with a zip on the canopy. This also offers extra ventilation on hotter days thanks to the breathable mesh panel which I found useful for keeping an eye on baby.

When it comes to comfort for baby, the Aer+ buggy seat offers three different positions: seated, relax and sleep - where the seat can be reclined fully flat for snoozing on the go. These positions are controlled by a zip at the back of the seat.

Joolz Aer+ recline

While you obviously wouldn't use it for something like running, I was pleasantly surprised to find that the wheels and suspension were able to handle multiple types of terrain with ease, ensuring a smooth ride for both driver and passenger.

For a smaller pushchair, we had no qualms with the volume of the shopping basket (5kg) and fit in everything we could need. There's also a handy storage pocket on the back of the seat for the likes of your phone or keys.

Joolz Aer+ basket and wheels

Final verdict

Overall, I'm really impressed with the Joolz Aer+. It's a lightweight, attractive pushchair with the ability to transform into a travel system, making it a fantastic option for many families who perhaps don't want the expense of a larger travel system as well as having to buy a lighter, compact option too.

No, it might not be suitable for those looking to tackle trickier terrains or perhaps live in the countryside but for those in urban areas or those after something that takes up minimal room, it's a worthy contender as a main pushchair.

The compact fold with both the buggy seat and cot attachment is really impressive and on the whole, it's easy for anyone to use with some great recline options.

Joolz Aer+ FAQ

Is Joolz Aer+ suitable for newborns?

It is indeed! The pushchair seat is suitable from newborn when in the lie-flat position, making it safe from birth. However, some parents might still prefer to buy the Joolz Aer+ with cot which we've reviewed above.

What is the difference between Joolz Aer and Aer+?

While the weight remains the same, the Joolz Aer+ has a few additional features that you won't find on the standard Aer. This includes an even larger sun canopy with ventilation and a wider basket. The wheel design has also been improved and there's now an adjustable harness with a click-and-go 5 point buckle.

The Aer pushchair is only suitable for little ones that can sit unaided which is typically around six months.

What does Joolz Aer+ come with?

If you buy just the Joolz Aer+ pushchair , in the box you'll receive:

• Joolz Aer+ • Travel pouch • Raincover

joolz aer travel system

The Joolz Aer is a compact and lightweight buggy from Dutch pushchair brand Joolz.

The company promises that the Aer is “more than just a buggy”, positioning it as a premium travel stroller – compact enough to fit in an aeroplane overhead locker. With a one-hand, one-second fold and easy-to-use harness, as well as plenty of additional features, it is designed to make life easier for parents in a hurry.

The Joolz Aer is also aimed at the environmentally conscious as it uses sustainable fabric made from recycled plastic bottles, and, working with Tree Nation, Joolz plants a tree in its ‘Birth Forest’ in Columbia for each pushchair sold. Even the cardboard box it comes in has cut-outs to show how it can be recycled into an aeroplane for your youngster.

With an RRP of £399 it is at the more expensive end of the scale when it comes to travel buggies, alongside the hugely popular Babyzen Yoyo (£399). There are definitely more affordable options, such as the Silver Cross Jet , the Baby Jogger City Tour 2 (£249.99) or the Mountain Buggy Nano , which is under £200. So, the Aer will need to deliver on its promises if it is to justify its price tag.

Donna tested the Joolz Aer with her 7-month-old Daisy around the supermarkets and bumpy country lanes of Gloucestershire. Daisy gets impatient with their current all-terrain beast of a buggy, as she just wants to get going and not wait for it to be set-up.

What were your first impressions?

When I opened the box, I could tell this was a premium buggy. It oozed quality and looked stylish.

I am one of those impatient people who ignores instructions at first to see if I can work things out – and the Aer was easy to set up. It is ready to go from the box, already folded, and I was surprised at how easy it was to open.

It really was a one-hand, one-second opening buggy as the company boasts. Once I had opened it, I did the sensible thing and read the instructions. They are concise and helpful to ensure you are aware of the Aer’s many features and how to use them.

What age is the Joolz Aer suitable for?

As the Aer’s seat doesn't recline completely flat, it is suitable from 6 months (or when your baby can sit up unaided). However, you can get the Aer with a travel cot bundle (£599), which makes it suitable from birth

The Aer buggy is designed for children up to 22kg, which is approximately 4 years, so should last your child a good while.

Did you try the Aer cot?

Joolz launched the Aer cot in March 2021, meaning that the pushchair is now suitable from birth rather than 6 months.

I didn’t try out the travel cot, but it looks like it has some equally well-designed features as the buggy. For example, you can fold the frame with the cot attached – it collapses on itself in an innovative fold that is still fairly compact and easy to carry. Very clever.

carrycot

What about the Aer’s seat? Travel buggies often have quite snug seats – was the Aer’s comfortable for your child?

The Aer’s seat is 45cm wide, so similar to other compact strollers, and it is generously padded, so it feels comfortable. Daisy is an average size 7-month-old and relaxed into it straight away – she seemed comfortable, snug and secure.

The colour of the seat is described as Refined Black and the fabric looks expensive and stylish. Despite already enduring dribble, sick, messy hands and splashes from the muddy lanes, it is easy to wipe clean and still looks as good as new.

How does the seat recline, and does it recline flat enough for your child?

The seat reclines by using a zip at the back which allows the backrest to recline. You can then adjust the angle of recline by tightening or loosening two straps on the side. At first, it seemed tricky to zip back up with Daisy seated, so I learnt to do it when she was out of it. By reclining the seat, you also allow access to ventilated mesh around the seat, which will be perfect in the summer to give Daisy a bit of breeze on hot days. There is also a handy pocket behind the seat for any keys, valuables or a few toys.

The seat doesn’t lie fully flat, so is not suitable for newborns.

Can the Aer seat face both world and parent?

No, the Aer’s seat can only face world. If you buy the cot for your newborn or use a compatible car seat, those face the parent, but the toddler seat can only be fixed forward facing.

handlebar

What did you think of the harness?

One of the stand-out features about the buggy is the harness system. It is simple and adjusts so easily, which is fantastic with a wriggly baby on board. The round central buckle was a joy to use as each strap in the system clicks in individually and you can easily adjust the shoulder height.

There are no shape-matching exercises needed to connect the buckles for this one, like with many others on the market! There is also no tangling and struggling to get arms in and out as it’s such an easy system to put on and then release your child from.

How do you fold the Joolz Aer – was it as easy as promised by the brand?

The element on the Aer that I keep raving about to friends is the fold system, which is quick, easy, smooth and intuitive.

- You press two buttons in the middle of the handle bar, which you can easily do with one hand.

- Then, with a quick push down, the buggy frame concertinas into a compact shape with nothing catching or getting stuck like on some other buggies.

- Opening it uses the same buttons and, with a quick pull upwards, it is open and ready to go – perfect for little Daisy who gets impatient waiting for me to put my all-terrain together.

With the Aer, it is only seconds before she is strapped in and on the move. As you can open it one-handed, it also helps with those situations when you have a tired or upset child in one hand and quickly need to unfold with the other. You can even fold and store the Aer while holding your baby on your hip, as I discovered a few times in the supermarket car park.

folded-carry

How compact is the Aer folded?

The folded measurements of the Joolz Aer are 53.5 x 45 x 21.cm – the size of a large briefcase – and I was so impressed by the dimensions. I honestly sometimes forget where I have put it, because it’s so easy to store and blends into the background. It stands neatly upright until you need it.

The Joolz Aer is designed to fit in aeroplane overhead cabin lockers but, due to lockdown, I have not been able to jet off to sunnier climates to test that. It’s worth saying, always make sure to check with your airline whether you’re allowed to take it onboard.

How much does the Joolz Aer weigh?

Weighing a mere 6kg, the Joolz Aer is truly lightweight – very much on par with competitors in the category. There are some lighter models out there, such as the GB Pockit (under 5.5kg), but I doubt they will be as sturdy as the Aer.

Does the Aer fit into the boot of your car?

Its compact size also makes the Aer brilliant for my car as it takes up such little room which means I can fit everything in the boot for a change, without wheels or handlebars getting caught up in other things.

car-boot

What is the Aer like to push and steer?

I never thought I would say this about a pushchair, but this was such fun to push! It really is responsive and quick in comparison to anything I've used before. Yes, this buggy is a great travel stroller because of its size and weight, but it would also make a brilliant everyday stroller because of how well it moves across different surfaces.

The steering on the Joolz Aer is effortless on flat surfaces. It fits through narrow spaces and turns well – which is great when out and about and in shops – and as it is light, it is easy to tip to go onto pavements.

How well does the Joolz Aer cope with different terrain?

I had assumed it would provide a bumpy ride on the lanes around my home, but it didn’t. It coped with them as well as my all-terrain, although being so light it struggled with the potholes – but then again it’s not designed for that. It’s good that it was sturdy enough to cope with lanes, and as it’s easy to carry, I could lift Daisy up into the side to allow the tractors to pass.

terrain

What’s the chassis like?

For something so light, the frame feels strong and durable and, like the rest of it, is simple-looking but well-made. It is also easy to clean.

Is the Joolz Aer handle adjustable?

The handle height is 105.5 cm and isn’t adjustable but feels a good height for me at 5’ 5”. It’s not a problem for our household, but it is worth considering or even trying before buying. One shopper on John Lewis’ website, for example, remarked that it felt too high for his wife.

Did you like the hood – does it give enough coverage?

The hood was brilliant for shielding Daisy’s face from the odd moment of glaring sun and rain shower (along with the rain cover it comes with). It will be even better in the summer due to it being so big and having UPF 50 protection to stop the sun’s rays hitting Daisy’s skin. In addition, you can extend it to reveal a mesh panel that allows for extra ventilation and a view of your child.

hood

What are the wheels like?

I have only had a buggy with huge wheels before, so imagined the small wheels on the Joolz Aer would lead to a bumpy ride – but how wrong I was. The wheels are great. As I mentioned earlier, they provide such a smooth ride in shops and around town but are also sturdy enough for country walks. The wheel lock is handy for particularly rough or stony paths.

How good are the brakes on the Aer?

The brake is near the rear wheels and simple to put on when needed. There is nothing complicated about it and you just click it on and off with your foot.

Is the basket big enough for your needs?

Baskets can often be an afterthought on travel buggies, barely holding a pack of wipes, let alone a changing bag. But the Aer’s basket is surprisingly big and can store many essentials. It is easy to throw things in in a hurry and it keeps them in there securely. I’ve used it for several shopping trips and was surprised how much I could fit in. The manual recommends a load limit of 5kg.

Is the Aer car seat compatible?

Yes, you can buy car seat adaptors that are compatible with a huge range of car seats , from Joolz to Maxi-Cosi, Cybex and Joie, and many in between. This is great, as it makes the buggy even more flexible allowing parents to combine it with their infant carrier.

What’s in the box?

  • Joolz Aer buggy
  • Instruction manual
  • Travel pouch (red)

Joolz also encourage you to recycle the box and have cut-out shapes on the box to help you convert it into an aeroplane, fitting in the with Aer theme.

first-imp

What are the additional accessories that you can buy?

On the Joolz website you can buy different accessories to enhance the buggy including:

  • a bumper bar (£37.95)
  • car seat adapters (£42.95)
  • footmuffs in different colours (£89.95)
  • handlebar organiser (£42.95)
  • mosquito net (£24.95)

Now you’ve tested it, what would you have wanted to know before purchasing the Aer pushchair?

I just wish my friends who had children before me had stopped me getting a huge travel system and told me to get a buggy like this. The only thing missing for me personally is a bumper bar, as Daisy likes to hold one, but you can buy these and I will be doing so. It doesn’t need one and works fine without, but for me it will be useful.

One trick I have learnt to do with the Aer, is to zip up the reclining seat before folding it away. If you don’t, you can’t do it when it’s in its compact shape and the top of the seat sticks out. It’s not a big issue but if you want it to be as compact as possible and look neat when folded, it needs doing.

Who would this pushchair be most useful for?

Before I used it, with the name Aer and aeroplane images on the travel pouch I assumed it was a travel stroller for those who holiday regularly or to be put away for certain occasions. After using it for a few weeks, however, I have discovered this is a fantastic everyday buggy and one I will be using for many years because of how sturdy it is.

I have swapped my all-singing, all-dancing all-terrain for the Joolz Aer as it is a joy to use. I live in the country and love how compact it is and how it doesn’t take up my whole car boot. I used to live in London, however, so I know it’d be great for city dwellers who use public transport due to its weight and compact size when folded. It’d be easy to take on the bus, tube or train whether you are carrying it or using it to push your child.

product

Is the Aer pushchair worth the money?

At £399, the Joolz Aer may seem expensive (especially when you haven’t heard of the brand before) but as soon as you see it and feel it, you understand its price tag. It looks modern and feels like a durable top-range buggy which will last a long time. It looks stylish too. It also has many parent-friendly features to justify the price such as a super easy fold system, its light weight and a good-size basket. It certainly seems to be a popular option for many users – with parents on John Lewis online giving it 5 out of 5-star reviews, unanimously praising its quality and ease of use.

Where can I buy the Joolz Aer?

The Joolz Aer is available directly from Joolz , Babyplanet and Winstanleys Pramworld .

MadeForMums verdict:

The Joolz Aer is compact, lightweight, stylish and modern. Despite being so light, it is robust and sturdy, looks and feels expensive and equally useful in the city as the country, It is so much more than a travel buggy. Definitely worth considering as an everyday buggy investment.

Is the Joolz Aer Worth Buying? I Tried it to Find Out!

Friends, I am on a constant search for the best travel stroller, particularly that can fit in the overhead bin of an airplane.

I’ve searched high and low, trying several in my quest to find the best. On my most recent trip to Southeast Asia, I brought the Joolz Aer along to see if it’s a contender. We used it for 12 straight hours in Singapore en route to Bali , and all of the airports on the trip. Here’s what to know before buying the Joolz Aer:

My Overall Impression of the Joolz Aer

joolz aer travel stroller

I’ve tried a few strollers that can fit in the overhead bin now, including the GB Qbit (which is a stretch, the Pockit would be more accepted on any flight), and the Ergobaby Metro Deluxe (read my Metro+ review).

The Qbit would be almost perfect if it were small enough to fit the overhead dimensions, and the Metro+ would be perfect if it had a larger canopy and could be folded with one hand. Could the Joolz Aer shine where those two failed?

Yes, the Joolz Aer is small enough to be cabin approved for most flights, and folds super easily with one hand. It has a huge canopy and seems like a comfy ride for my son, but it not everything is perfect.

Joolz Aer Dimensions

joolz aer travel stroller review

The Joolz Aer is on the higher end of travel strollers , coming in at $450 new (but I got mine for cheaper secondhand on Mercari ).

It’s delightfully lightweight, comes with a carrying bag, and folds down nice and small:

  • Approximate price: $450
  • Weight: 13.4 pounds
  • Folded dimensions: 20.9” long by 17.7” wide by 9.1” high
  • Open dimensions: 32.7” long by 17.7” wide by 41.5” high
  • Suspension: All-wheel
  • Stroller seat age and weight range: 6 months to 50 pounds
  • Under-seat storage capacity: 11 pounds
  • Patent pending extra-large comfortable seat.
  • Made from recycled plastic bottles.
  • UPF 50+ canopy with peek-a-boo window.
  • Tall back and adjustable 5-point safety harness.

You can also use it with a car seat (it’s compatible with the Nuna Pipa , Pipa Lite, Pipa Lite XL, Pipa RX and Pipa Lite R, Cybex Cloud Q (plus), Aton Q (i-size) and Clek Liing) or infant bassinet with the purchase of adapters .

Joolz Aer Pros

There are some definite pros to the Joolz Aer – the all-wheel suspension, the smooth ride and handling, the adjustable handlebar for tall parents, and how comfortable and plush it feels. These are what stood out to me:

joolz aer travel stroller review

We can all stop looking, this is the best canopy on a travel stroller. Not only is it wide, it has a possible zip-to-open extension with a peek-a-boo mesh window to extend coverage down further if needed.

The canopy is sturdy as well. It’s one of the biggest missing elements on the Ergobaby Metro+, which doesn’t have enough coverage to prevent my son’s arms from being in the sun unless he has them in his lap. I love the material, which is thick and helpful if it rains. This one will be hard to beat in the canopy department.

The under stroller storage is decent on this one at 11lbs. I still haven’t found a travel stroller that can accommodate our large diaper bag backpack (really, only the Guava Roam we use at home can), but it’s sturdy enough for us to strap to the handles if needed.

joolz aer travel stroller review

I love how simple it is to fold this stroller. I can easily do it with one hand while holding my son, which is essential for solo travel, and a nice bonus even when traveling with others. It makes getting through TSA much simpler!

The wheel lock is really simple to activate on this one. I like that it’s so quick and easy, but that does mean I’ve tripped it on accident before. Still, it’s nice that it can be activated or deactivated even when using flip flops.

I didn’t even notice if the Joolz Aer had issues handling any sidewalks or bumps in the pavement, which means there was nothing to notice, and therefore that’s a great thing. For such a lightweight stroller, the four wheel suspension and the ease with which the stroller moves made it easy to push around. It was really an afterthought while simultaneously pushing our heavy bags through the airport. The fact that it made things so easy is a pretty big plus!

I also didn’t see my son pulling up and forward as much in this stroller as he does with the other travel strollers we have, meaning it’s a more upright seat. This is a plus for him.

Joolz Aer Cons

I want to love everything about this stroller so that I can stop looking for the perfect travel stroller, but unfortunately it’s not perfect. Here’s what I didn’t love as much about the Joolz Aer:

joolz aer travel stroller review

Unlike most strollers that recline by releasing straps on the back, this one is reclined by unzipping a back compartment. This means there’s only one amount of recline one can have, and it’s not as far back as I would like.

I like that once reclined, it creates a little cocoon where your child is surrounded by fabric (with some mesh) on all sides. I don’t like when there are gaps (like most of GB’s Pockit lineup). Still, I wish it was more adjustable. I don’t always want to do a full recline, but when I do, I like a bigger one than this offers.

No footrest

joolz aer travel stroller review

My son clearly wants to be able to put his feet up when he sleeps. I can see him shifting uncomfortably in the Joolz when trying to get to sleep, as he’s tall and there isn’t a footrest. We ended up purchasing the leg rest sold separately, but it’s pricey and still shorter than I’d like.

The Ergobaby and Qbit both have an adjustable one, and since this one doesn’t it feels like a big downside. Most of the GB Pockit strollers and the Babyzen Yoyo also lack a footrest.

There’s no lap bar on this one, which I don’t really care about, but for some families who don’t use the straps and harness, this is a non-negotiable.

Final Thoughts on the Joolz Aer

joolz aer travel system

Overall, I like the quality of this stroller. It doesn’t feel cheap like some travel strollers do, and it’s one of few I feel comfortable strapping our heavy diaper bag to.

I would absolutely love it if the recline was a little bit deeper, and if there was a footrest. That said, I haven’t found a travel stroller that has it all yet, and the huge canopy, premium materials, the fact that it’s made from recycled bottles, and how lightweight and easy to fold it is are huge bonuses. So far, it’s the best travel stroller I’ve found, and it is our go-to!

If you do buy one, buying through this link helps support us at no extra cost whatsoever to you. Everybody wins! But I also want to encourage you to think secondhand first. Here’s how I buy and sell our baby gear secondhand.

How to get to Suzdal from Moscow

joolz aer travel system

If you are ever in Moscow, you should look at The Golden Ring , a ring of towns and cities north east of Moscow which played an important part in the formation of Russia and the Russian Orthodox Church. The towns themselves are almost like museums and none more so than the jewel of the Golden Ring, Suzdal . You have to visit this town if you are in Moscow and I will tell you exactly how to get to Suzdal from Moscow.

You can do this in a return day trip to Moscow, just, but I recommend staying the night in Suzdal. That will give you the afternoon on the 1st day and the morning and early afternoon on the 2nd day to explore which should be enough time. You can get a bus from Moscow to Suzdal. However, there is only one bus a day and it is not very comfortable. A better option is to get a train to the nearby city of Vladimir and from there get a bus to Suzdal. There are multiple trains every day from Moscow and buses are almost every 30 minutes so you will not have to wait long in Vladimir.

Getting the train to Vladimir

Go to the state run website for Russian railways . In the departure station, click (or type) ‘MOSKVA’, in the arrival station type ‘VLADIMIR”, select your departure date (and return if you will go back to Moscow the next day) and click on the buy ticket button. You will have multiple trains to choose from. The fastest trains do the journey in about 1 hour 45 minutes. Be sure to check which of the Moscow train stations your train will depart from. More than likely this will be Mockva Kurskaia. Whichever station it is, you can get there very easily by using the metro .

Getting Bus from Vladimir to Suzdal

When you arrive at the train station, follow everyone else that is leaving the train station. When you get outside, if you look across the street, you will see the bus station. The facilities in the bus and train station are pretty basic. the train station is a little better so if you want a coffee or something to eat, I would get it there.

In the bus station go to the ticket office and get a single ticket to Suzdal. Something like “odin billet Suzdal” should be enough to be understood. The ticket costs 98.50 rubles so its easier to have a 100 ruble note to get change from.

My ticket to Suzdal is bus number 159, platform 10 at 12:00 and seat number 6.

When you have your ticket, go outside to the platform listed on the ticket and wait for the bus. Simple really!

Not the actual bus in the end. The bus was more of a minivan.

Staying the night in Suzdal

There are a lot of accommodation options available in Suzdal. The place i stayed is Suzdal Hotel . It is actually a house and they have a few rooms available. The breakfast that is included is very very good. Trust me on this. They will even collect you from the bus station in Suzdal and bring you back the next day.

Returning to Vladimir (and Moscow)

To return to Vladimir, just repeat these steps in the opposite direction – return to the bus station in Suzdal, buy a ticket to Vladimir and continue your onward journey in Russia. Simples! 😉

I went to Suzdal over 13years ago for Christmas, I was on an on the go tour and they organised the train for us which was a very interesting journey. I would love to go back and explore longer. I am definitely impressed that you have done it on your own and it sounds like you had a bit of an adventure :).

Hi Melissa, it certainly was an adventure that’s for sure! Though sometimes, there is something to be said for letting other people take care of things for you and getting to relax and not be too stressed.

Moscow is a place with an intriguing and enigmatic history. Suzdal seems to be a charming place with a rich heritage. As you have mentioned it seems to be a living museum of sorts. Nice step by step instruction on getting to Suzdal from Moscow. This is indeed an invaluable resource for first-time travelers to Russia.

Thank you very much for your kind words. I hope some people find it useful!

' src=

Thanks for recommending the Suzdal Hotel, since I prefer to stay in small cozy places with good breakfast. And the service of taking the guests from and to the bus station in Suzdal is a great plus!

Yeah I agree. I would rather stay in a family type place than a bigger place too!

I have never heard of this town and it sounds like a great place to visit if you are already in Moscow. Your instructions are very helpful and I like how you put a photo of the ticket.

You’re welcome Candy. If you don’t speak the language, Russia can be difficult to get around.

Fantastic detail and extremely useful post for anyone wanting to explore outside of Moscow. Suzdal does sound fascinating.

Thanks Michael!

This seems like quite an experience! I am surprised that I haven’t heard of Suzdal before but as soon as I go to Moscow, I will have to do a day trip to there. Is a day trip enough to explore Suzdal?

Hey Lydia, you certainly can! If you go early enough in the day to Vladimir, you can probably get 6-7 hours in Suzdal.

' src=

This is a great post with quite a few good details. Pics looks so amazing. Thanks for sharing and keep up the good work.

Thanks. Glad you enjoyed!

' src=

Wow, you are adventurous! I spent years upon years in Russia and never made it to Suzdal. Never realized Vladimir was less than 2 hrs away from Moscow.

Thanks Jenia. Russia is a huge place. You could live there your entire life and not see it all!

' src=

Thanks for the instructions. If I ever want to visit Suzdal I now know how to get there from Moscow via Vladimir.

You’re welcome!

Suzdal sounds really lovely! I need to travel to more places where there will be snow rather than just constantly chasing the sun 😉

I know what you mean! After 4 months of winter in Russia though, I was craving the sun so much!

' src=

I had never heard of Suzdal until now. Thank you for introducing me to a new place. It looks so calm and quiet under the snow. What are some things to do in Suzdal?

I think it is the sort of place you go to get away from the craziness of big cities and have some slower, quiet time. If my memory is correct, they also have a cucumber festival once a year every July. Apparently the cucumbers of the area are very good!

Day trip to Suzdal from Moscow: transport, sights, maps and tips

joolz aer travel system

 DAY TRIP TO SUZDAL

Suzdal is one of the most popular destinations on the Golden Ring and the whole city is often described as an open-air museum.  The city has no railway station and practically no heavy industry, meaning that is has preserved its provincial charm and a great deal of architectural monuments.

joolz aer travel system

From Moscow, Suzdal is not as easy to get to as Sergiev Posad (the closest Golden Ring city to the capital) but it is worth going the extra distance as Suzdal provides more of a contrast from Moscow.  If you make use of high-speed trains it is possible and not too demanding to visit for even just a day, but of course spending the night there is recommended to soak in the atmosphere or to combine it with a visit to neighbouring Vladimir.  As the city is a very popular tourist destination you will have no problem finding a cafe or guesthouse there.  There is practically no public transport in the city, but the city is small and most sights are located relatively close to each other.

Getting There and Back

joolz aer travel system

Via Vladimir

joolz aer travel system

Direct to Suzdal

Buses directly to Suzdal leave from Moscow’s Schyolkovsky Bus Station.  There are about 9 buses a day and it takes around 4½ hours depending on traffic.  The buses stop at Vladimir too.  Using this option will mean a rather exhausting day trip.

Orientation and Main Sights

joolz aer travel system

Suzdal is a relatively small city and it is not difficult to walk around the city to see most of the sights.

Suzdal

The main road in the city is Ulitsa Lenina which runs north across the whole city.

Suzdal

The main sights of Suzdal are located either on or just off this road, including the two main sights: the Suzdal Kremlin in the south and the Spaso-Yevfimiev Monastery in the north.

Suzdal

More information about Suzdal can be found on our Suzdal  pages.

joolz aer travel system

Suzdal is famous for its medovukha (mead) which is an alcoholic drink made out of honey.  It can be drunk either hot or cold, meaning it perfect in both summer and winter, and you will find it on practically every menu in the city.  There are various flavours of the drink available and even a non-alcoholic version.  In addition to medovukha, you can find all traditional Russian souvenirs in the city and there is a big souvenir market on Torgovaya Ploschad.

The Joolz Aer+ Pushchair (2024)  + Cloud T Travel System in Forest Green makes travel as light and easy as possible, thanks to the weight of only 6kg - featuring a shoulder strap, the Joolz Aer + allows you to be hands-free to carry your baby. When travelling you can rest assured that the pushchair will fit easily into an aeroplane's overhead compartments making life incredibly easy.

The ergonomic thinking is what makes the Joolz Aer + so unique, with its super comfortable seat that keeps your little one safe and happy when you're out on adventures.

The CYBEX Cloud T i-Size Car Seat in Sepia Black is suitable from birth, providing both comfort and safety for your growing baby up until around 24 months. When used with the ISOFIX Base T, you can enjoy the benefits of an in-car recline position for a comfortable ride every time.

Plus, by turning the infant car seat towards the car door, it's easy to on and off-board your little one due to its 180c rotation. To provide extra leg support, the recline hinges at the hip area and also create a longer seating position for extra space. This makes it one of the longest infant carriers available on the market. The all-around air ventilation allows for a pleasant seating temperature for your little one no matter their age or season.

Subway Strays: The Dogs of Moscow’s Metro

joolz aer travel system

Despite the collapse of the Soviet Union, the stray dogs in Moscow have a surprisingly well-documented history which animal behaviorists have been paying close attention to for several decades. During the Soviet period in Russia the packs of wild (or stray) dogs in were regulated. Only the clever canines who learned to stay in isolation were able to survive. Usually, these dogs would remain on the outskirts of the city hunting in wild packs, as the living in the city was dangerous and food scarce.  After the fall of the Soviet Union quality of life in Russia began to slowly improve and with it more street vendors and food collecting in busy neighborhoods. This began to bring some the stray dogs out of the suburbs into the city.

Today, there are nearly 35,000 stray dogs that call Moscow home. Out of these 35,000 stray dogs there are about 500 that have taken to living underground. Out of these dogs, there are a few that have started thinking outside the box and inside the boxcar. They have begun the slow move underground to stay out of the cold (Russian winters reach an average of -5 degrees every day). Many of the Russian commuters embraced the dog’s underground migration by petting them or giving them food.

Though these claims may seem like the made up type of internet misinformation that we have learned to be skeptical of these days, it is actually sourced to a Russian biologist by the name of  Dr. Andrey Poyarkov , a highly regarded scientist in his field of study. As it turns out Poyarkov has been studying these dogs for the last thirty years and told news sources back in 2010 that he suspected a small fraction of these underground dogs had actually learned to use the subway in order to beg for food in bustling urban areas where food is more plentiful.

Andrei Neuronov , an animal behaviorist, says much like you train your dogs at home to respond to verbal commands like “sit” or “stay,” the Moscow metro dogs are using audio cues from the subway stops they have learned. The dogs memorize the names of the stops to navigate the subway systems in order to take them to heavily populated places during the day and get food.  Then, they return to their more secluded corners of the suburbs at night where they are less likely to be bothered by people.  Here is a story ABC did back in 2011, talking about this very thing.

Do you have any information on how to help these dogs?  Please share and comment below.
