Over 1,000 Reviews on TripAdvisor
"This tour was the ideal experience for exploring the North Shore of Kauai. Captain Steve and his son were so knowledgeable about everything, from the names of the waterfalls to the legends the cliffs and valleys hold. Iâve only done a tour like this once before, and it was on a zodiac boat, which was bumpy and not as enjoyable. This boat was the ideal size to handle the waves, as well as fit into sea caves along the Napoli Coast. Captain Steve was an excellent driver, and we never felt unsafe, even inside caves with big waves. I would highly recommend this family-owned and operated company for your next boat tour."
"My husband and I did the afternoon 4 hour Na Pali coast and snorkel tour. It was the highlight of our time in Kauai! Captain Steve and his co-captain (blanking on her name but she was awesome) were fantastic tour guides. I loved Captain Steve's personal touches to every story he told about the coast as well as his knowledge and understanding of the ocean. He took us through sea caves and gave us a taste of the Na Pali "Rollercoaster Ride." The snorkeling was awesome too! Both of them gave clear instructions about safety and frequently checked on passengers to make sure everyone was feeling OK. In addition to the actual tour, their website explains exactly what you get and gives accurate information about what to expect. We went during a time when Kuhio highway to Hanalei was under construction due to a landslide a few months prior and there was a limited amount of time to get into the area. It was clearly stated on the website along with the time you needed to make the trip. The booking staff did a great job communicating with us about what to expect and was very helpful. I cannot say enough great things about this tour and company! Definitely recommend!!"
"To be honest, we accidentally booked this tour instead of one the the competitors that we had done beforeâand we are so glad we did! Captain Steve and his mate Dave were fantastic, super informative and fun, and they took us into coves and caves that weâd missed before. The lunch was surprisingly good! This is one tour you donât want to miss, the Napali coast is beyond stunning from this viewpoint, and the snorkeling was great as well. It was definitely a highlight of our trip."
"Wonderful staff, left on time, organized, beautiful views of the coast and sea caves along the way, great snorkeling location where you get to see all kinds of sea life and well worth the price to be able to leave right from Hanalei Bay."
"If you want to ride out on some massive waves and get a great view of the Napali coast, book this adventure with captain Steve & crew. Cap'n Steve navigated the Northern waters with ease and grace. My wife and I had a blast going in & out of remote sea caves and under water falls on this epic tour. An absolute must do on a Kauai visit."
Explore secluded beaches, ancient Hawaiian sites, tropical reefs, lush valleys, sea caves that were once lava tubes, and thousand-foot waterfalls crashing along the coastline.
Play alongside Hawaiian spinner dolphins, sea turtles, and tropical fish as you snorkel the most beautiful coves on the coast!
Our catamarans are the limousines of the ocean fleet! Our US Coast Guard certified motor powered catamarans were designed for maneuverability and speed.
We get you there and back in comfort like no other tour boat company on the island of Kauai! Experience it for yourself and book a tour with us!
We keep our tours small and personalized with a local touch! Our family is locally born and raised from Kauai’s North Shore. Our vessels were built on Kauai for running the exciting Na Pali coast.
The size and design of our boats allow us to navigate sea caves and coastlines closely for a truly unique Na Pali Coast tour!

Hanalei River & Bay Paddle and Snorkel Exploration
We have time to do it all!
Blue water paddling to snorkeling, bird watching, beach combing … all during a memorable day that combines 4 hours of intermittent sea and river kayaking with beach and reef time, all within the enchantment of the Hanalei River, Bay, and estuary.
Paddle the calm idyllic and scenic Hanalei Heritage River as your expert guide(s) keep you safe and entertained with local lore, legends, and natural history.
Spend time exploring Hanalei Bay with magnificent panoramic views of distant Makana Peak (known also as Bali Hai).
View the nearby fluted ridges and peaks of Namolokama, Mamalahoa, and Hihimanu, which lie like silent sentinels, whose waterfalls drop gourds of water into Wai’oli Valley, which lies behind the town of Hanalei.
We often see Green Sea Turtles and sometimes Spinner Dolphins accompanied by avian antics of such birds as the Boobie and Layson Albatross .  Also seen are shorebirds and river birds such as the Wandering Tattler , Gallinule and Black-Capped Night Heron  to name a few.
Depending on sea conditions and/or group dynamics we can paddle west along the perimeter of the sandy shores of Hanalei Bay and into the lovely waters of Wai’oli stream. Or more commonly venture East to the picturesque sandy beach along Kenomene Bay (Hideaways), for great snorkeling or beach combing.

Voted #1 Napali Tour Co. by Hawaii Magazine! â Hawaii Magazine Best of the Best 2023
Kauai offers the oldest and most protected reef ecosystems of all the major Hawaiian Islands. Hundreds of species of fish can be found in these delicate "rain forests of the sea," one-third of which are found nowhere else in the world. Weather permitting, our Captains will take you down Na Pali Coast which offers some of the best snorkeling on the island and is accessible only by boat. Schools of vibrantly colored tropical fish mingle with the ancient Honu (Hawaiian green sea turtle) that graze on the limu (algae) growing on the coral reefs of these waters.
All Capt Andy's Kauai Snorkel Tours Include
- Expert snorkel instructions for all levels including beginners.
- Trained crew of professionals certified in CPR.
- High quality, well maintained, snorkel gear.
- Lunch and drinks
Beginning Snorkelers
Are you a 1st time snorkeler? Capt. Andy's is famous for our friendly and safe instructions. Snorkeling is not complicated. We'll have you exploring Kauai's tropical reefs in no time.
For those less confident swimmers, we provide snorkel vests which assist with floatation.
Snorkel Gear
Capt Andy's carries only the finest and most comfortable snorkel gear for your underwater adventures.
- Soft silicone masks (corrective lenses too!)
- "Dry" easy purge snorkels.
- Comfortable fins in all sizes.
- Snorkel vests - for buoyancy.
- Non-fog spray
Kauai Snorkel Tips
Always use property fitting snorkel gear.
Proper fitting gear is one of the most important factors for an enjoyable snorkeling experience. One leaky mask or sore feet from tight fins can be frustrating. Our knowledgeable crew is here to help. We will fit you with proper size gear to ensure comfort and safety.
Use a Mask with Corrective Lenses
What good is snorkeling if you can't see the fish? Our soft silicone masks with corrective lenses are a perfect fit for people who wear glasses.
Safety First
If you are snorkeling without a tour, always check current ocean conditions before going out. Be informed of these important ocean safety tips:
- When in doubt, donât go out.
- Always snorkel with a buddy.
- Use a point of reference on shore and check periodically to make sure you have not drifted too far.
- For beginners, going with an experienced snorkerler is recommended.
Who Can Snorkel?
Just about anyone can snorkel, as technique is more important than your fitness level. The fundamentals are easy to learn. Basic swimming skills are required, but snorkel vests can be used to assist in floatation. Depending on how adventurous you are, different levels of physical ability are required. If you have any doubts, consult your physician regarding any conditions that might be limiting for this activity.
What Do I Need To Bring?
Are there safety concerns.
If you are snorkeling with Capt. Andy's our Captains will ensure you snorkel in safe conditions, and trained professionals certified in CPR are onboard our boats.

ALOHA FROM THE NA PALI CATAMARAN CREW
Along the Northwest corner of Kauai lies 16 miles of rugged, inaccessible coastline, known as the Na Pali Coast, meaning “The Cliffs” or “Many Cliffs.”
The Na Pali is home to some of the world’s most famous tropical locations with over 6,175 acres of undeveloped paradise. Although there are a variety of ways to explore the Na Pali Coast, a boat tour departing from Hanalei Bay has been the preferred choice amongst our island’s visitors for decades. Join Hanalei’s #1 boat tour for the adventure of a lifetime to the most spectacular and dramatic coastline on earth!
Aboard our two identical 35Ⲡmotorized catamarans, you’ll find the perfect middle-ground between adventure and comfort! Our vessels are small enough to enter sea caves, while large enough to provide enough room to walk around freely even at full capacity. For your comfort, we have provided a spacious restroom, sunbrella shade, forward-facing seating, and a sturdy swim ladder.
Don’t miss this chance to join us, and come experience the “highlight of your trip” with Na Pali Catamaran!
EXPERIENCE THE MOST SPECTACULAR AND DRAMATIC COASTLINE ON EARTH!
Kauai has countless natural places of beauty to experience. Allow us to show you the most beautiful parts of some of the most spectacular and dramatic coastline on earth while maintaining comfort, safety, and adventure simultaneously.
Our 35Ⲡaluminum power catamaran, Kamahele Kai II, is small enough to enter Na Paliâs famous sea caves, yet large enough to be comfortable. Unlike other tour boats that enter the sea caves, our vessel features a bathroom, shade, adequate seating, and room to walk around freely. Even at full capacity, it is not overcrowded.
5-Star Na Pali Coast Adventures
The scenery was breathtaking and the crew was knowledgeable and fun. I recommend Na Pali Catamaran to everyone who loves land, sea and adventure. And the food ainât bad either.
The boat was super clean. The crew was fantastic and they made the tour fantastic! I would highly recommend you take the Na'Pali coast tour with these guys!!!
Na Pali Catamaran tours are a fantastic way to see the Na Pali coast. The boat tour offers views that are not available on the helicopter tours. We especially enjoyed the sea caves and getting to enter one of them. Our tour guides were knowledgeable and made the tour very entertaining. I highly recommend this tour.
The best tour of the Na Pali Iâve ever had. Going into the caves was amazing. My seven year old son was so happy and had a great experience! Thank you all so much!!
We have toured the Na Pali coast several ways (top of Waimea Canyon, a sunset cruise from the west side, powered hang gliders when they were operating) and this experience outdid them all. Captain Lance and Crewman Miguel gave an astounding tour, complete with wildlife sitings, great history and information, and wonderful snorkeling with the turtles. We could tell Capt. Lance loves the sea and is very knowledgeable about ocean conditions. He was able to take us into three sea caves safely. We had a delightful afternoon. We highly recommend this activity for anyone visiting Kauai. Totally worth the time and money.

My husband and two teenagers loved this kayak adventure! Our guides were very friendly, funny and calm. Jay was very informative and gave us a wonderful history lesson on the island and its culture. He did a wonderful jo ... b preparing us for our journey and guiding us through the river and ocean. We did make the journey to the farthest beach on the ocean and it was well worth it! We snorkeled with some sea turtles and enjoyed our time at the beach. It was a great way to finish up our trip on Kauai. I appreciate all that our guides did to inform us and keep us safe as well as teach us about the island and its culture. I would highly recommend this!
Our guide was a pro through and through! Excellent adventure for our family of five!

Whether you’re interested in a day of outdoor adventure or a taste of local Hawaiian culture, there’s no denying that Hanalei is a great launching point for seeing the best of what Kauai has to offer.

Hanalei, Kauai FAQs:
Where is hanalei.
Hanalei is located on the northern shore of the island of Kauai. It’s approximately 10 minutes by car from Princeville, 35 minutes from Kapa’a, and 50 minutes from Lihue Airport.
What is Hanalei known for?
First and foremost, Hanalei is known for its captivating natural beauty. There are green mountains, golden sand beaches, and picturesque ocean views everywhere you look. When you’re in Hanalei, it’s easy to see why Kauai is called the Garden Isle!
Hanalei is also considered to be the gateway to the rugged Napali coast. The long stretch of coastline is an unspoiled wilderness of cliffs, waterfalls, and lush vegetation.
The town of Hanalei itself is rather small, but it’s full of charm and character. Plus, it’s within walking distance of the beautiful Hanalei Bay, where you can spend the day swimming, snorkeling, or kayaking.
What’s the best time to visit Hanalei?
The best time to go to Hanalei is in the summer. The weather is warm (daytime temperatures are between 82°F to 87°F), and there is little rainfall. Yes, this is Kauai, so it can rain at any time, but showers are infrequent and come and go quickly.
Summer is ideal because it has the best conditions for visiting the beaches on the north coast. During this time, the ocean is calm and suitable for swimming or snorkeling.
Winter, on the other hand, is not a good time if you’re hoping to hit the beach. The large waves and strong currents are way too dangerous for water activities. And if conditions are too hazardous, the beaches will often be closed to visitors.
If you do plan to visit during summer, just keep in mind that this is peak tourist season. Prices will be more expensive, and beaches will be more crowded, but it’s worth it to take advantage of the optimal beach conditions.

Is it better to stay in Hanalei or Poipu?
This is a hard question, as both places have their own unique advantages. If you’re visiting in summer, both Hanalei and Poipu are good options, with warm weather, sun-soaked beaches, and tons of fun outdoor activities. Poipu may be more lively and central to more things, but it also has more of a resort feel, which may or may not be something you’re seeking.
However, we would choose Poipu if we were visiting Kauai in the winter. The northern coast is wet and rainy at this time and the surf at the beaches are too dangerous for swimming.

The 12 Best Things to Do in Hanalei
1. explore the napali coast.
Covering almost the entire northwest coast of Kauai, the Napali Coast is arguably one of the island’s most breathtaking sights. Between the rugged cliffs, cascading waterfalls, and jaw-dropping coastal views, this area is a paradise for hikers and nature lovers.
However, this stunning landscape cannot be reached by car, so you’ll need to hike in to really get a feel for the land.
If hiking isn’t for you, then it’s also possible to see the coast by boat. There are several tour operators that will take you up the coast so you can have a front-row seat to the spectacular coastline. One of our favorites is the power raft with Kauai Z Tours , which is a thrilling adventure for those craving a bit more excitement in the water. If you’re looking for a calmer ride, this Napali Coast catamaran sail and snorkel is another great option.
Another option is to take a helicopter ride over Napali. While this may not be the most budget-friendly option, it is a thrilling and memorable way to see some of the coastline’s most secluded sights. While you’re in the air, you’ll be treated to bird’s eye views over the Waimea Canyon, Wai’ale’ale Crater, Hanalei Valley, and so much more!
2. Relax on Ke’e Beach
This beach is the true definition of a tranquil paradise. Backed by the lush green cliffs of Kauai, Ke’e Beach is an idyllic spot for swimming, snorkeling, or sunbathing. The waters here are incredibly calm (there’s a protective reef that prevents the waves from getting too big), so it’s a great choice for families or those traveling with younger kids.
While Ke’e Beach is nice in the summer, the waves are usually too rough for swimming during the winter. This applies to almost all beaches on the north shore, so take precautions if you’re visiting during this time.
Because this is one of the more popular beaches outside of Hanalei, you’ll need to make a reservation for entry and parking for Ha’ena State Park online. With this reservation, you’ll also be able to hike part of the Kalalau Trail, which is considered to be the gateway to the Napali Coast.
From the beach, it’s only a 2-mile hike to one of the most picturesque viewpoints over the coast. You can also continue to do the waterfall hike, although this trek is a bit longer (8 miles roundtrip).
Read more about Ke’e Beach and snorkeling there .
3. Admire the Limahuli Garden & Preserve
Located in one of the most biodiverse valleys (the Limahuli Valley) in all of Hawaii, the Limahuli Garden & Preserve is an oasis worth visiting during your trip to Hanalei. The preserve is home to lush forests, exotic plants, and terraced taro gardens that date back over 1,500 years.
During your visit, you can explore the gardens at your own pace. The ¾-mile long looped trail takes you around the park, while informative signs provide insight into the different plants and flowers.
But if you crave a more in-depth experience, we recommend booking the guided tour. Not only will you get to learn more about the plants, but you’ll also hear stories about Hawaiian history and culture. This is an excellent opportunity if you want to make the most of your trip to the preserve.
Limahuli Garden & Preserve also hosts a variety of fun events throughout the year, from movie nights to chocolate tastings. You can check out their calendar online to see if there’s anything special happening during your visit.
4. Go Swimming at Ha’ena Beach
Ha’ena Beach is another one of our favorite hangout spots near Hanalei. It has an easy-to-reach location right off of Kuhio Highway and some of the most pristine views of the ocean we’ve ever seen!
The golden sands are backed by Mount Makana, which makes for a spectacular backdrop for a day of beachgoing. Bring your towel, sunscreen, and picnic (there’s also a small snack shack on-site in case you forget), and enjoy the panoramic views from every angle. You can also come from sunset if you seek a truly magical and memorable experience!
We also like this beach because there’s usually a lifeguard on duty. This is reassuring if you’re here with family! But as with other beaches on the north shore, do not be tempted to go into the ocean during the winter, as the rough surf is very dangerous during this time.
Despite its name, the beach is not part of the Ha’ena State Park, so no advance reservation or booking is required (like there is for Ke’e Beach ). However, the parking lot for the beach is very small and is usually packed before noon.
5. See the Maniniholo Dry Cave
If you’re spending the day at Ha’ena Beach, it’s worth hopping across the street to see this geological wonder. The Maniniholo Dry Cave is located at the bottom of a steep cliff and has a deep cavern that extends 150 feet back.
Visitors can walk through the cave and explore the unique formations (just make sure to bring a flashlight if you feel claustrophobic).
However, the most mysterious part about the dry cave is the legend that surrounds it. It is said that the cave was discovered by Menehune, mythological dwarfs that are believed to inhabit the valleys of Hawaii. As the Menehune were being chased by Polynesian settlers, they ran into the cave (which, at the time, was a tunnel that connected to Waimea Canyon) to escape. Once they passed through, they collapsed the tunnel, creating a dry cave and forever trapping the Polynesians inside.
6. Spend a Day on Hanalei Bay
Located right in the middle of Hanalei, this wide stretch of golden shoreline is the largest of its kind on the north shore. This crescent beach stretches for nearly 2 miles and boasts dramatic views of the sparkling blue waters and green mountainous landscape.
While there’s plenty of room to lie out, we prefer setting up our towels on the eastern side of the bay. The closer you get to the Hanalei Pier and Black Pot Beach, the more memorizing the views are from the shores!
Hanalei Bay is a picture-perfect swimming beach, although you’ll also find boaters, stand-up paddle boarders, and kayakers here as well. Because the beach is at the mouth of the Hanalei River, it’s a popular starting point for those who want to paddle in calmer waters.
As with most beaches on the north, Hanalei Bay can have high and dangerous swells in the winter. If the waters are too rough, the beach will most likely be closed. But even if they aren’t, use your best judgment before heading into the water.
7. Shop and Dine in Hanalei Town
We think that Hanalei Town is one of the most charming places in all of Kauai! Famous for its historic buildings and laid-back ambiance, it’s the perfect place to grab lunch or a refreshing treat (who can say no to Hawaiian shave ice?) after hitting the beach, as it’s just one block back from Hanalei Bay.
Hanalei Town also has quite a few food trucks , which is reflective of the island’s diverse culinary scene. One of our favorite spots in town is Hanalei Poke, although you also can’t go wrong with Holey Grail Donuts and Fresh Bite Kauai.
In addition to the variety of eateries, you’ll also find art galleries, outfitter shops, and water sports equipment rentals. This is also the home of the Waiʻoli Mission House, a historic 1837 home that was used by early Christian monasteries.
8. Drive Across the Hanalei Bridge
For a bit of history, head to Hanalei Bridge, one of Kauai’s most recognizable architectural landmarks. This one-lane bridge is 113 feet in length and carries passengers over the mighty Hanalei River.
The original bridge was built in 1912, although it was destroyed during a tsunami in 1957. It was repaired two years later, although it underwent a major restoration in 2003.
Driving over the Hanalei Bridge is like taking a step back in time. From the shaking of the timber to the views over the flowing river, it’s easy to see why the bridge is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
If you do plan to cross the bridge, keep in mind there is a certain procedure for navigating the single-car width. Oncoming cars get the right of way and usually cross together. Typically 5 to 7 cars should pass before allowing the other side to proceed.
9. Soak in the Views from Hanalei Lookout
While there are many awe-inspiring views on the northern coast, Hanalei Lookout is easily one of the most picturesque and most photographed on Kauai. Situated up the highway from Hanalei Town (as if you were heading towards Princeville), this vista showcases the natural beauty of the Hanalei National Wildlife Refuge and Kawaikini mountain range.
If you look closely, you can also see the taro fields down on the valley floor. The location near the Hanalei River (which you can also see from the lookout) creates the perfect moist conditions for growing this valuable crop.
For the best views, pull over and park across the street near the Foodland grocery store.
10. Have a Family Day at Anini Beach
As one of the best swimming beaches for kids, Anini Beach offers safe and family-friendly beach time for little ones. Because of the reef (which is the longest and widest in the Hawaiian Islands), the water is well-protected in the summer with very few waves. This makes it an ideal spot for kids to swim, splash, and play!
If you bring snorkeling equipment, you’ll also find a variety of marine life in the shallow waters. From colorful fish to vibrant coral formations, there’s an entire world of underwater beauty to discover at Anini.
Head all the way to the right-hand side of the beach, and you’ll come across a grassy picnic area. With public restrooms, showers, and picnic table pavilions, the beach has all the facilities you need for a family day out.
And if you decide you want to stay longer, you can even spend the night at the on-site campground ( Anini Beach Park Campground ). It’s only $3 for a camping permit, which is a fair price considering you can pitch a tent just feet from the water.
11. Sightsee at the Kilauea Point Lighthouse
On the northernmost point of the Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge is the historic Kilauea Point Lighthouse . Built in 1913, the lighthouse stands an impressive 52 feet tall and has a powerful Fresnel lens with a powerful beam that can reach 22 miles at sea.
The view from atop the 180-foot cliffs is spectacular. The panorama over the Pacific Ocean and rocky shoreline is beautiful during the day, although it’s even more stunning at dawn or sunset.
However, the view is only one of the reasons to visit the lighthouse. As it’s located inside a wildlife refuge, you’ll have the opportunity to see a myriad of native and migratory sea birds. Keep your eyes peeled for the Laysan albatross, the Hawaiian goose, great frigates, and even red-footed boobies.
From November to March, there’s also a high chance of seeing humpback whales from atop the cliffs. On top of that, spinner dolphins, monk seals, and green sea turtles are also known to swim along these shores.
12. Indulge in a Delicious Farm-to-Table Dinner
Kauai is a great destination for foodies, and this farm-to-table dinner is one of the most delicious ways to experience island cuisine. The dinner is hosted by Common Ground, a farm that specializes in exotic foods like coffee, pineapple, tree tomatoes, kava, bananas, hearts of palm, and more. They refer to their farm as a regenerative forest, where they grow and harvest foods without the need for imported pesticides and fertilizers.
After a tour of the grounds, you’ll sit down with your small group (24 people max) to enjoy a family-style dinner made with 100% locally sourced ingredients. While the menu changes seasonally, it often features fruit and veggies picked right from the farm itself!
Dinners are held only on Tuesday through Friday and last for 2 hours. However, you can join an hour early for a ½ mile walk to the historic stone dam on the Wai Koa Loop Trail. It’s a great way to see a bit of nature and history before enjoying your gourmet farm-to-table experience!

- ScubagirlToronto 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Great Rental Experience We really enjoyed our self-guided paddle on the Hanalei River. The staff made it so easy for us; everyone was helpful and well organized. Both directions onbthe river were beautiful, but I really enjoyed the beach direction the most. When we went the river was quite calm so it would be easy for beginners. Read more Written April 30, 2024

Kolo was our guide and he was so much fun and informative. I was not expecting him to be so knowledgeable about the surrounding mountains and the Hawaiian history lesson that accompanied the kayaking. He is an amazing ambassador of his Hawaiian culture. I can't say enough wonderful things about this young man. At lunchtime he pulled out his ukulele and sang beautifully some Hawaiian songs. I am definitely coming back just so I can hang out with Kolo and learn more about the Hawaiian culture and the history of Kauai. Read more Written April 25, 2024

Our tour guides Kilo and Gabe were awesome. The kayak requirements are mostly very mild - lazy river, stops for learning about Hawaiian history, and a short tenure in Hanalei Bay where the waves were larger but water was very shallow. The snorkel experience was low stress, great for beginners. We saw a sea turtle, an eel and several tropical fish. Picnic lunch was lovely and the guides were attentive and added bonus from them bringing some local foods for sampling. We would definitely recommend for a family experience. There was only one other kayak out that morning, maybe because it rained a fair amount. The River was beautiful with lots of wildlife: nene, herons, egrets, turtles. Paddled down to the mouth, but we decided conditions were too rough to go out in the bay. The rental outfit was very friendly, helpful and efficient. Read more Written March 24, 2024

The double kayakâs had plenty of room for our bags and snorkel gear. We were treated to lunch, music played on a ukulele, and gorgeous views of the mountains. We snorkeled with several turtles and saw lots of fish. The reef in that area is shallow in many parts. Great time and experience overall. Also, our original tour was cancelled due to flooding/rain. 1. Relax at Hanalei Bay Beach
Located in one of the most picturesque corners of Hawaii, Hanalei Beach features a spectacular backdrop. The lush majestic mountains are surrounded by low-hanging white clouds.
You will probably recognize this beautiful place from classic films such as South Pacific or more recently in movies like The Descendants . Hanalei Bay was also the inspiration for the song âPuff the Magic Dragon.â
Take your time strolling along Hanalei Pier, relax, and admire these stunning vistas around you! One of the top Hanalei Bay things to do is to snorkel, so hop in and enjoy.
2. Get Shave Ice at Wishing Well
If you are looking for refreshing shave ice that wonât leave a syrupy aftertaste, head to Wishing Well Shave Ice in Hanalei.
They use cane sugar and organic fruit to create their own shave ice syrup. And you can also get your shave ice topped with sliced fresh fruit! Itâs always worth at least one stop!

3. Go Golfing
If you want to go golfing on Kauai, it doesnât get much prettier than the Princeville Makai Golf Course . Itâs the first-ever Mr. Robert Trent Jones Jr. solo design and has been named one of Americaâs âTop 5 Great Golf Settingsâ in the world by National Geographic Traveler. They have six oceanfront holes with spectacular views.
Donât want to golf? Sign up for one of their sunset golf cart tours instead! This is one of the best things to do in Princeville.
4. Explore Limahuli Garden
One of the most beautiful botanical gardens on Kauai is the Limahuli Garden , just past Hanalei in the town of Haâena. This stunning 17-acre botanical garden is nestled in a lush valley and framed by the Pacific Ocean.
It was named one of the best natural botanical gardens in America for its striking taro plants, ancient lava rock terraces, replica Hawaiian house, and unsurpassed views.
This garden provides a great opportunity to learn about soil and water conservation through tours as well as an unforgettable experience throughout your visit. The loop trail is short and easy enough for kids to complete, making it another one of the great things to do near Hanalei Bay.
5. Take a Kauai Food Tour
Join an adventure through Kauaiâs vibrant North Shore and taste food from around the island. Get to know the culture and food of this tropical island by sampling local fruits, teas, grass-fed beef (and other meats), and fresh fish catches in an interactive culinary tour with 6 very generous tastings.
This is a great way to find out some of the best Hanalei restaurants that you can return to later in your stay. Check latest rates and more information .

6. Go See the Wet and Dry Caves
For a little adventure, check out the Kauai caves on the North Shore. The Maniniholo Dry Cave is a rather large opening dry cave that can be explored easily.
Itâs great to explore with children and you can even tell them the legend of how the Menehune created this dry cave when they were running away from the Polynesians!
Bring your flashlight for exploring as it may get dark inside during certain times of the day.
The Waikanaloa Cave (also called âThe Blue Holeâ) or Waikapalae Caves require a short hike but theyâre worth it if you want to see beautiful caves where water fills up from underground springs which eventually feed into the ocean at low tide levels.
You might recognize it from Pirates of the Caribbean !
7. See the Hanalei Valley Lookout
This scenic spot in Hanalei is definitely one of the most photographed places on Kauai. You can see waterfalls cascading behind taro fields and itâs one of the best places to see rainbows on Kauai!
The stunning view seems to change colors with variations in weather conditions making it seem more magical than ever before. Make sure you make at least one stop here so you donât miss out on these spectacular views that also have an enchanting quality about them.
When figuring out what to see in Hanalei, donât miss this stop!
8. Eat at Tahiti Nui
One of the most iconic tiki bars in Hawaii is Tahiti Nui. Signifying a time when memories are made and lives intersect, this location has been serving up legendary mai tais for decades. And they often have live music in the evenings (plus a weekly luau).
But, we come here for the food. Itâs seriously so tasty and much more elevated than youâd expect. And itâs casual enough that you can bring the kids. Itâs definitely one of the best restaurants in Hanalei Bay.
9. Drive up to Keâe Beach
Keâe Beach is a popular spot for swimming and snorkeling on the North Shore. Itâs nearly like being in your own private pool, so you can enjoy hours of fun without ever getting out!
If youâre looking to make it more exciting, bring along some snorkeling gear from home because there are plenty of fish waiting to be explored. Itâs another one of the top North Shore Kauai things to do!
You will need parking or shuttle reservations, which you can book HERE .
10. See Art Galleries
One of the cool things about Hanalei is that itâs a total artsy town. They have several art galleries worth checking out. A few of our favorites include Havaika Oceanic and Tribal Art , Halelea Gallery , Infinite Arts , and Michal Arts .
Most of them also sell prints, notecards, and stickers, so you can support local artists without investing in a large piece.
11. Enjoy Kombucha at Kauai Juice Co.
If you want to taste the best kombucha in Hawaii, head over to Kauai Juice Co in Kilauea. Here, they brew their own kombucha and mix it with tropical flavors like mango, lilikoi, lychee, and guava. You can buy it bottled or opt to try one thatâs on tap (those tend to be less bubbly).
And donât worry if kombucha isnât your thing, they also have cold press juice, caffeinated drinks, and little elixirs.
12. Go Snorkeling at Tunnels Beach
Tunnels Beach is the best snorkeling spot on Kauai (and possibly in Hawaii), but itâs a little tricky to find. The entrance may not seem obvious, but look for a bunch of cars parked and youâll know youâre in the right place!
Youâll definitely want to go early or late in the day, as parking is limited. If you donât have your own gear, rent some in Hanalei before heading over hereâthere are no places nearby that will do rentals!
This is definitely one of the top things to do in North Shore Kauai.
13. Get Taro Donuts at Holey Grail
One of the best places for donuts on Kauai is the Holey Grail food truck . These are made with taro and they are some of the lightest and most flavorful donuts Iâve ever had.
They rotate their flavors but they usually have ones drizzled with tropical fruit flavors and some with locally made chocolate. And their donuts are just the right size to enjoy more than one. Plus, they make really great coffee!
14. Learn to Surf
Being around Hanalei Bay on Kauai is a dream come true. Not only does it have one of the most beautiful spots in Hawaii, but you can also learn to surf at Kauai Hanalei Bay for an incredible experience!
Youâll be guided by your expert instructor who will teach you how to paddle and pop up on waves. Before long, surfing wonât feel like such work at all. With the sun shining down and green mountains as far as the eye can see-you are sure not want this moment to ever stop!
A 2-hour private or semi-private lesson awaits with certified professional instructors who ensure personalized attention during every step of the process. Youâll love surfing as it is one of the best Hanalei Bay activities! Check latest rates and more information .
15. Take Photos at Lumahai Beach
Located just around the western edge of Hanalei Bay, Lumahai Beach is a perfect place to enjoy beautiful sandy beaches and tropical foliage.
This long stretch of white sand beach was made famous by Hollywood when Mitzi Gaynor spent her time on this beach washing that man right out of her hair in the classic movie South Pacific .
Itâs also home to many postcard scenes shown across Kauai as well as paintings depicting its beauty. Just be careful going into the water, as itâs not usually safe for swimming.
Going to any of the beaches in Hanalei is one of the best free things to do in Hanalei!
16. Explore Kaulu Paoa Heiau
KeĘťe beach is the place where many Hawaiians have learned to practice their spiritual hula art. Just climb up a short trail to enter the Kaula Paoa Heiau, which legend says is the birthplace of hula.
The ocean, with its powerful waves and decibel levels, was a teacher for those first practicing this ancient tradition of chanting while testing themselves against natureâs might.
This heiau (stone temple) is dedicated to Laka â the goddess of dance and music in Hawaiian culture. Itâs also said that Hawaiian goddess Pele fell in love with Lohiau on this site. Legend says she still visits during full moons when people can feel her presence near the old lava rock formations found here.
If you do visit, be respectful and only enter through the opening (donât climb over the rocks).
17. Shop the Boutiques
Shopping in Hanalei is a trip that many consider to be worth the effort. Visitors are greeted by an eclectic mix of shops and eateries with every business being as different from one another as possible; some shops in Hanalei sell musical instruments while others have clothing or gifts, but they all reflect the ownerâs personality.
There are several good spots for food including a market and restaurants, making Hanalei town feel like it has something for everyone who visits here.
A few of our favorite Hanalei boutiques include The Barn 808 , I Heart Hanalei , Pualani Hanalei , and Sand People .
18. Hit up the Hanalei Farmers Market
Visiting the Hanalei farmers market is a lovely way to immerse yourself in Kauaiâs beauty, aloha, and abundance. Every Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to noon, youâll find more than 50 stalls of local growers and crafters.
If it sounds like paradise now wait until summer when there will be an amazing array of tropical fruit available such as apple bananas, mangoes, and papayas (just ask!). This is definitely one of the best farmers markets on Kauai and one of the best things to do North Shore Kauai has to offer!
19. See Waiâoli Huiâia Church in Hanalei
The gorgeous church with American Gothic architecture is the most photographed building in Hanalei. It just takes one look at their bright green church to understand the appeal and why itâs one of the top Hanalei attractions.
Founded and built by Christian missionaries in 1834, it was originally just a thatched meeting house. But it has since been rebuilt into more of what we would consider today to be modernized for its time â timber and plaster construction.
Plus, they added the Mission Bell in 1843 which made it sound even better when you walked up near this quaint church. The stained glass windows are also exquisite. Theyâre not like any other churches Iâve seen before.
I suggest visiting when they have a service going on and respectfully staying outside where you can hear the choir sing hymns in the Hawaiian language. Otherwise, just admire this gorgeous church in Hanalei.
This is one of the top things to do in Kauai when it rains !
20. Go Kayaking
Get up close and personal with the spectacular scenery of Hanalei Bayâand enjoy an active way to exploreâon this two-in-one, half-day tour. Itâs one of the most popular Kauai snorkel tours .
Begin your day kayaking along the Hanalei River before heading onto the bay to soak in outstanding views from a new perspective while seeing the turtles or dolphins near shore (depending on water conditions).
Swap out your kayak for snorkeling gear when you spot sea life beneath you as well! All necessary equipment is provided; all participants receive training beforehand so that they are comfortable in both environments.
This family-friendly event is perfect for kids and adults alike looking for some adventure during their Kauai vacation. Be sure to read our top tips for kayaking with kids in Hawaii before you go. Check latest rates and more information .
21. Grab Pizza at the 76 Station
I know this might sound a bit crazy, but trust me on this! Youâre going to want to order a pizza at the North Shore General Store at the 76 Station on Kauai. They had their pizza oven shipped from NYC and their pizza is phenomenal!
We first tried it on the Tasting Kauai food tour and we went back the next day!
They have some bar seating outside or you can get your pizza to go and take it back to your hotel room or the beach.
22. Explore Na Aina Kai Botanical Gardens
One of the prettiest botanical gardens on Kauai is the Na Aina Kai Botanical Gardens & Sculpture Park . They have lots of tours available and you can either walk or enjoy a little ride in a cart. This 260-acre park has tons of cool statues to see, a maze to walk through, and even a childrenâs garden.
They usually also offer a monthly Keiki Day where families can play in their Childrenâs Garden for a special event.
Itâs another one of the fun things to do on North Shore Kauai has to offer.
23. Try Poi at Hanalei Taro & Juice Co.
Hanalei is famous all throughout Hawaii for being one of the best producers of poi, a fermented taro dish. This Hanalei food truck has a variety of taro dishes. Stop by to try traditional poi or one of their delicious burgers, hummus plates, and smoothies!
Their menu changes, but one of our favorite things to order is their bowl of kalua pork, poi, and lomi lomi salmon. That flavor combination is hard to beat!
24. Flytographer Photo Shoot
Hanalei is one of the most beautiful places on Kauai and thatâs what makes it such a great place for Kauai photography! This is a fun activity to do as a couple, a family, or even as a solo traveler to Kauai.
Hanalei Bay provides a stunning beach, majestic mountains, and even the iconic Hanalei Pier. I suggest booking a sunset timeslot to soak in all the lovely lighting.
Itâs definitely one of the top things to do Hanalei Bay has to offer! Check latest rates and more information .
Read about our recent Hanalei photo shoot HERE .
Book a Family Photo Shoot
Whenever we travel to Hawaii, we almost always book a family photo shoot with Flytographer. They are super easy, affordable, AND it guarantees that Iâll be in some photos. You can get $25 off if you book through this link or use the code HAWAIITRAVEL.
25. Join a Kauai Movie Tour
If you love movies, this is the tour for you. Learn all about Kauaiâs cinematic history on a full-day movie-focused trip.
A roundtrip shuttle will take care of the transportation so that you can enjoy making out those famous backdrops in person while your guide gives commentary and shares little-known facts about some of Hollywoodâs most iconic films made here including scenes from Jurassic Park to Raiders Of The Lost Ark !
This 6-7 hour journey includes lunch at either Tahiti Nui or Calypso Restaurant where they serve up deliciously fresh food with an island twistâdefinitely something different than what weâre used to seeing around these parts! Check latest rates and more information .
26. Join a Na Pali Coast Boat Tour
The Na Pali Coast is a spectacular place for ocean rafting. You donât want to go on the typical catamaran tour, because they are unable to zip in and out of sea caves like smaller rafts can. Plus leaving from Hanalei gets you there much more quickly than starting at Port Allen (on the South side of the island).
Just be sure that you book your tour through one of the companies operating out of Hanalei ( April -October only).
I think Na Pali Coast Tours has some of the best Na Pali boat tours from Hanalei because youâll get to snorkel in 2 different locations, plus check out caves and hidden beaches.
These tours are some of the best things to do around Hanalei Bay! Check latest rates and more information .
27. Embark on a Kauai Scavenger Hunt
This 2-hour event is an active, immersive, and challenging adventure. Itâs an adventurous hunt for your taste buds with creative challenges to get you off-the beaten path in search of local stories any good tour guide would tell you! The magic part? YOU!
Youâre not just passively watching or listening because it all comes together through participation â from exploring new ways to share those tales to cooking up tasty dishes thatâll have everyone talking about your journey back home.
For optimal results do as they say: âjump in and play âfull on.'â Check latest rates and more information .
Taking the Shuttle from Hanalei to Haena
One of the most popular destinations on Kauaiâs North Shore is Haena State Park. The stretch of road from Hanalei to Keâe Beach (located at the end of the road) used to be a total traffic jam and parking was crazy hard to find.
Thankfully, thereâs a much easier way to visit Haena from Hanalei. Youâll just make a parking reservation (up to 14 days before your visit). You can make your Haena State Park reservation HERE .
And donât worry if you canât make one. Thereâs also a shuttle bus you can take from Princeville. Learn more about the shuttle HERE .
Where to Stay in Hanalei
Now that you know what to do in Hanalei, letâs talk about the best North Shore Kauai places to stay .
There are several hotels in Hanalei Bay that are pretty awesome. The Hanalei Colony Resort offers condo-style rooms tucked away in one of the most beautiful places. This is perfect for those wanting to get away from it all and itâs one of the top Hanalei hotels.
If youâre looking for a Hanalei vacation rental home, try Hale Hoku or Hale Naninoa .
What to do in Hanalei Kauai FAQs
If youâre looking for an adorable small town in Hawaii, Hanalei is a dream come true. From sweeping mountain and valley views, this North Shore Kauai spot attracts people looking to get away from big resorts. Both South Pacific and The Descendants were filmed here and youâll recognize some of the most scenic spots in these movies. Itâs also one of the top places to grow taro (to make poi) in Hawaii.
The answer really does depend on traffic (Kauai traffic can be brutal) but most days it should take about an hour and 20 minutes. Poipu is one of the most popular places to stay on Kauai because itâs a full resort community. However, if youâd like to explore Kauaiâs North Shore (where Hanalei is located), youâll want to set aside a full day.
While the island is shaped like a circle, the Na Pali Coast mountains prevent the highway from going all the way around the island. Instead, you can drive all the way to Haâena on the North Shore or all the way to Polihale on the West Shore.
The Hanalei meaning can be two different things. It can mean lei making, but it also means crescent bay, which probably refers to the wonderful Hanalei Bay Kauai offers.
During the summer months, it is safe to swim in Hanalei Bay in Kauai. In other months, the water might be too rough. Make sure to be safe and watch the water to know when it is best to get in.

Are you planning a trip to Kauai? Here are 27 of the best Hanalei activities for any tourist to enjoy!
1. Go Golfing
Many will be surprised by golfing being an entry on this list. But, considering Hawaiiâs beautiful landscapes and tranquil atmosphere, it should be unsurprising that golfing is so enjoyable in this tropical wonderland!
The best golf course in Kauai is undoubtedly the Princeville Makai Golf Course . It was named Americaâs âTop 5 Golf Settingsâ by National Geographic for its beautiful landscapes and views.
If youâre an amateur golfer or want to learn a new skill, check out their golfing lessons for beginners. Not planning on golfing at all? Check out their beautiful sunset golf cart tours to witness an oceanfront view of Hawaiiâs famously beautiful sunsets.
2. Relax at Hanalei Beach
Hanalei Beach is one of those seashores that perfectly fit what you imagine when you think of paradise. With flawless white-sand shores and clear blue waters, itâs the perfect place for activities such as sunbathing and snorkeling. Itâs one of the top North Shore Kauai beaches .
The area is well-known for being one of the best beaches for surfing in Hawaii. While youâre there, be sure to check out the immense pier and enjoy the beautiful mountain views that surround you!
Hanalei Beach also offers picnic tables, showers, bathrooms, and BBQ grills. This makes it perfect for families and a relaxed afternoon of grilling! Itâs also the filming site of multiple famous TV shows and movies such as The Descendants or South Pacific .
3. Go Snorkeling at Tunnels Beach
Tunnels Beach, despite being one of the best places to go off-shore snorkeling in all of Hawaii, is considered by many to be a âhidden gem.â Itâs quite likely that you wonât run into any crowds of tourists while youâre here.
Although it can be somewhat difficult to find, snorkeling is worth the inconvenience. Iâd make sure to get here earlier or later in the day to secure a parking space and even witness a beautiful sunset!
Snorkeling is one of the best ways to get first-hand experience with Hawaiiâs unique underwater ecosystem. As you snorkel at Tunnels Beach, keep an eye out for thriving coral reef systems, Hawaiian green sea turtles, schools of tropical fish, and manta rays!
4. Get Taro Donuts at Holey Grail
Donuts are some of the worldâs most widely acclaimed â and unhealthy â comfort foods. No matter what flavor or variation, theyâre perfect after a long day or at the beach. What better way to try donuts in Hawaii than with a Hawaiian taste?
The Holey Grail food truck is located at 5-5100 Kuhio Hwy Hanalei, Hawaii 96714 and open every day of the week aside from Monday. It serves entirely unique doughnuts made from taro â a traditional Polynesian staple food.
The taro dough makes the doughnuts the Holey Grail makes unbelievably tender and light enough to melt on your tongue! They also come in a pretty impressive variety of flavors, from tropical fruit to locally-made chocolate.
5. Go See the Wet and Dry Caves
The Kauai caves on the North Shore are beautiful attractions jam-packed with significance and geological history. Theyâre the perfect attraction for those hoping to go on a once-in-a-lifetime adventure!
Some of the best Kauai caves are the Maniniholo Dry Caves, which the Menehune carved to escape the Polynesians, or the Waikanaloa Cave, which is partially submerged in water. Be sure to bring a flashlight as you visit!
6. Explore Na Aina Kai Botanical Gardens
âNa Aina Kai,â meaning lands by the sea, is an appropriate name for the stretch of natural wonderland first founded by Joyce and Ed Doty. With a mix of artistic and horticultural visions, the botanical garden is still maintained today and is widely loved by both locals and tourists!
Dedicated to increasing future sustainability, the gardens preserve Hawaiiâs endemic and endangered flora and provide tourists with an unforgettable artistic experience. The Na Aina Kai Botanical Gardens & Sculpture Park is home to hundreds of species of trees, Hawaiian flowers , ferns, and much more.
While youâre in the area, be sure to check out the three main aspects of the garden: the Poinciana Maze, the Kaâula Lagoon, and the International Desert Garden. Theresâs also a birds-eye overlook area and huge variety of guided tours!
7. Take Photos at Lumahai Beach
Lumahai Beach, despite having beautiful views and amazing photo ops, is one of the less frequented beaches in Kauai. This makes it perfect for a tranquil afternoon of sunbathing and photoshoots.
Do keep in mind that due to extremely strong waves, the waters are usually not safe for swimming or any underwater activities. Youâll only see the most daring of surfers frequent these shores!
Lumahai Beachâs beautiful surroundings were made famous through the classic movie South Pacific and is now featured on many postcards and magazines. For your very own unforgettable pictures, visit Lumahai Beach!
8. Get Shave Ice at Wishing Well
Shave ice is a classic Hawaiian dessert, refreshing and perfect on a hot sunny day. Despite being so associated with Hawaii, it actually originated in Japan. It was brought to the islands by immigrants who first made the dessert from hand-shaved ice flakes and sugar syrup.
Over the course of many years, local flavors such as lilikoi (passionfruit) and coconut have been incorporated into the dessert, making it truly unforgettable. For some delicious shave ice that isnât cloyingly sweet, check out Wishing Well Shave Ice in Kauai!
Wishing Well creates all of its flavors from organic fruit and cane sugar, topped with slices of fruit! Their charming storefront is also one of the most Instagrammable places on this list.
While youâre in the area, be sure to check out nearby souvenir shops that sell handmade accessories and eco-friendly clothing! Itâs an amazing way to give back to the community by supporting local artisans rather than chain companies.
9. See the Hanalei Valley Lookout
The Hanalei Valley Lookout is one of the most breathtaking attractions on this list. It overlooks miles of verdant green meadows, immense mountains, cascading waterfalls, and charming taro fields! As you admire the view, youâll never want to leave.
Itâs rumored that the stunning view seems to change colors depending on the water or the time of day. So Iâd definitely visit more than once, especially if youâre staying at Hanalei!
If you werenât planning on staying near the North Shore, Iâd take the chance while visiting the Hanalei Valley to explore the rest of the North Shore, including its fun water activities, quaint shops, and amazing dining opportunities!
10. Take a Kauai Food Tour
For foodies or culture enthusiasts, a Kauai food tour is one of the best ways to experience Hawaiiâs unique cuisine. Shaped by its one-of-a-kind ecosystem and diverse historical background, Hawaiiâs cuisine is both unique and delicious!
Tour through a huge variety of delicious foods, sample exotic tropical fruits, drink delicious tea, and learn about some of Hanaleiâs best restaurants in this 6-tasting tour. Check out the latest prices and more details .
11. Hit up the Hanalei Farmers Market
There are so many benefits to visiting a farmers market in Hawaii that itâs tough to explain them in just a few paragraphs! The Hanalei Farmers Market is located in the heart of the town and is open every Saturday morning, from 9:30 am to 10:00 pm. It is one of the best farmers markets in Kauai.
Visiting a farmers market is an easy way to give back to the community by supporting local farmers and artisans. While youâre there, you can also meet many friendly people who may give you valuable insights on life â or amazing recipes!
Farmers markets are also the best place for you to buy farm-to-table produce at a reasonable price. This gives you the chance to taste amazing fruits and vegetables! Iâd especially recommend them if youâre living in an Airbnb and have access to your own kitchen.
12. Grab Pizza at the 76 Station
This entry on the list may make you raise your eyebrows, but I can guarantee you that the pizza at 76 Station will be the best youâll ever taste. The store is located in the North General Store at the 76 Station in Kauai.
The pizza 76 Station serves is baked in an oven specially imported from NYC. It incorporates local ingredients, putting a unique spin on this classic comfort food. We tried it during the Tasting Kauai food tour and had to go back the next day!
Whether youâd like a whole pizza for an afternoon at the beach or to enjoy at the bar seating near the store, 76 Station is the perfect option!
13. Learn to Surf
Surfing is just one of those things thatâs strongly associated with Hawaii â and for good reason. Hawaiiâs beautiful sandy shores and immense waves are considered by many to be a surferâs wonderland!
If youâve ever wanted to learn how to surf but felt overwhelmed and unsure where to start, check out surfing lessons in Hawaii! With the guidance of seasoned professionals, youâll be surrounded by beauty and cruising the waves in no time! Check out the latest rates and more information .
Your expert instructor will be able to offer you a multitude of options. These range from public classes to semi-private to completely private, though most sessions will last 2 hours. Youâll be provided with surf boards and any required safety gear. So just bring your swimsuit and some reef-safe sunscreen.
14. Enjoy Kombucha at Kauai Juice Co.
Kauai Juice Co. is a company aiming to uplift local farmers and provide their high-quality goods to communities across the world, all while remaining ecologically sustainable and spreading health, happiness, and Aloha!
Their kombucha is famous for being hand-made and flavorful, incorporating Hawaiian fruits such as guava and lilikoi (passionfruit). Bottled or from the tap, itâs undoubtedly delicious!
If youâre not a kombucha type of person, donât worry â they have a huge variety of other high-quality drinks and menu items such as grab ânâ go salads, cold pressed juice, caffeinated drinks, and elixirs.
15. Drive up to Keâe Beach
Keâe Beach is a classic white-sand Hawaiian beach a little off the beaten road, so if youâre looking for some tranquility and beautiful views, this is the right option.
Due to its gentle tides and soft sand, Keâe Beach is perfect for activities such as swimming, snorkeling, surfing, and much more! I especially recommend snorkeling, as there are many honu (Hawaiian green sea turtles) that frequent the waters.
16. See Art Galleries
One of the underappreciated aspects of Hanalei is its charming artisiness, which is most clearly seen in the number of art galleries youâll find in its premises! Consider visiting an art gallery to support local artists and have a lot of fun.
Some of our favorite galleries in Hanalei alone include (but arenât limited to) Michal Arts , Haleleâa Gallery , Havika Oceanic and Tribal Art , and Infinite Arts . Youâll be able to find a huge variety of art styles and themes, ranging from oil paints to acrylic!
These art galleries are also some of the best ways to purchase some unique souvenirs to remember your vacation! Many sell notecards, art prints, stickers, postcards, and much more!
17. Explore Kaulu Paoa Heiau
The Kaulu Paoa Heiau, located on the Keâe Beach, is accessible through a short hike and a designated opening. Itâs a place of immense cultural and historical significance, so Iâd definitely recommend visiting.
Considered the birthplace of hula by Hawaiian legend, this heiau is dedicated to Laka, the graceful goddess of dance who is rumored to visit during full means. It is also rumored to be the place where Pele fell in love with Lohiau.
In the past, this heiau was the place where hula dancers first practiced the tradition of chanting that accompanies hulas. While you visit, be sure to treat this historical site with the utmost respect and leave no trace â clean up any trash that you may produce.
18. Embark on a Kauai Scavenger Hunt
This Kauai scavenger hunt is one of the best ways to become personally involved in the culture and lives of Hawaii locals! Lasting roughly 2 hours, this event breaks away from traditional tours to bring you a hands-on event that youâll never forget.
For these magical two hours, roam the surrounding areas, searching for good stories and the solution to puzzles to win the scavenger hunt. This is an entirely private event, so youâll only be playing with teammates you know.
The only downside to this unique activity is that you need to be moderately fit. The costs are quite reasonable, starting at $37 per person and adjusting depending on the group size. Check out the latest prices and more details .
19. Join a Na Pali Coast Boat Tour
A Na Pali Coast boat tour is one of the best ways to experience the elusive beauty of the Na Pali coast! Considered nigh inaccessible through land, the Na Pali Coast is one of the most beautiful places in all of Kauai. Check out the latest prices and more details !
20. Flytographer Photo Shoot
Iâve always said that the best way to make sure you never forget your Hawaii vacation is through taking some amazing pictures. As eager as travelers are to do so, they often are unable to replicate the skill and results of professional photographers.
Flytographer photo shoots provide you with the professionality and flexibility needed for you to enjoy your vacation while getting some amazing pictures! The photographers will adjust to your schedule and destinations, and youâre ensured satisfaction or a refund.
Seeing as Hanalei has some stunning photo ops and a huge variety of ideal destinations and backdrops, booking a Flytographer photo shoot is absolutely worth your money! Check out the latest rates and more information .
21. See Waiâoli Huiâia Church in Hanalei
The Waiâoli Huiâia Church was first built by Christian missionaries in 1834. Through centuries of rebuilding, it has become a charming example of classic American gothic architecture, with a forest green body and dark gray roof.
Whether or not you believe in the religion, this church is a charming destination thatâs perfect for a quick stop-by if youâre in the area!
If youâre part of a Christian denomination, no one will stop you from stopping by during service and enjoying the Church hymns, usually sung in Hawaiian.
22. Try Poi at Hanalei Taro & Juice Co.
If youâve ever wanted to try poi, a traditional Polynesian staple food made from taro root, be sure to visit Hanalei Taro & Juice Co.! This Hanalei food truck serves unmatched handmade poi along with other traditional Hawaiian cuisine and American comfort food.
Poi is a delicious and unique dish made from taro root. Itâs thought that poi was first created to sustain Polynesian natives through their journey to the Hawaiian islands. Itâs made through a painstaking process of mashing cooked starch against a wooden board with a pestle.
23. Eat at Tahiti Nui
One of the best parts of traveling to Hawaii is experiencing the cuisine. Hawaiiâs food is one of the most unique cuisines in the world, crafted in part by its unique ecosystem and also by its melting pot of cultures.
Tahiti Nui, an iconic bar symbolizing a place where lives intersect and memories are made, is an amazing place for you to stop by! They serve delicious fusion foods such as delicious build-your-own Tikiman pizza, coconut shrimp, poke bowls, and much more.
Tahiti Nui is one of the most laid-back yet high-quality restaurants Iâve ever been to, and they even have an extensive number of cocktail options and live music! Iâd say itâs one of the best restaurants in the area.
24. Join a Kauai Movie Tour
This Kauai Movie Tour is perfect for movie enthusiasts! Tour through dozens of filming sites, learn obscure fun facts, and have fun with fellow tourists on this full-day journey through the wonderland of Kauai.

During the tour, youâll also be treated to lunch at either Calypso Restaurant or Tahiti Nui, and traveling with a friendly and knowledgeable tour guide. Check out the latest prices and more details !
25. Shop the Boutiques
Shopping in boutique shops in Hanalei is an amazing way to support local shop owners and buy some truly unique and one-of-a-kind souvenirs!
As you stroll through shops in Hanalei, youâll be greeted by a charming mix of art galleries, musical instruments, clothing, handmade jewelry, and much more! I can guarantee that you wonât leave empty-handed.
Hanalei shopping is one of the best ways to fill an early morning â you can even stop by a local eatery or food truck for lunch! Some of my favorite boutiques include The Root , I Heart Hanalei , The Barn 808 , and Pualani Hanalei .
26. Explore Limahuli Garden
Botanical gardens are one of the best ways to spend time with nature, and the Limahuli Garden is a prime example of this. This 17-acre botanical garden is truly a hidden gem, nestled between the mountains and the Pacific Ocean.
While youâre here, witness fields of taro plants, hundreds of colorful tropical flowers, lava rock terraces, and even a replica of an old Hawaiian house. Youâll also learn a lot about conservation of water and the world around you on this simple loop trail.
27. Go Kayaking
Kayaking is one of the best ways to experience the wonder and beauty of the blue oceans of Hawaii. Most are considered to be a relaxing activity, so if youâve ever wanted to go on an ocean adventure without the hassle of snorkeling, consider kayaking!
If youâre new to kayaking or concerned about safety, consider this popular Kauai snorkel tour that fuses kayaking and snorkeling into one fun opportunity! Start off by kayaking to your snorkeling destination, then ditch the boat and explore the underwater world first-hand.
While you prepare for this tour, remember that all gear and equipment will be provided â just sit back and enjoy the trip! Check out the latest prices and more details !
Hanalei Kauai FAQs
Hawaii is well-known for its pleasant weather: warm sunny temperatures, clear blue skies, and not a cloud in sight. Kauai is no exception, so Iâd pack lots of summer clothing. However, seeing as Kauai is famous for its outdoors activities, Iâd bring proper clothes and gear for those as well.
Hanalei is a wonderfully charming small town with laid-back vibes and beautiful views! Whether youâd like to sit back and admire views of the surrounding landscape, visit places where famous films such as The Descendants and South Pacific were filmed, visit farms and historical plantations, or attend tours, you can have a lot of fun at Hanalei.

If you were thinking of visiting the Haena State Park, youâre unsurprisingly in the majority â the Haena State Park is one of the most popular attractions on the island of Kauai, and as a result, commuting there can get hectic!
Specifically, Iâve always had trouble on the road from Hanalei to Keâe Beach due to a lack of parking spaces and horrible traffic. One of the best ways to avoid this is by taking a shuttle from Princeville. Learn more HERE .
Luckily, you can easily get around commuter stress and difficulties by booking a parking reservation up to 14 days before your visit to Haena State Park, which makes your life much easier. Make your parking reservation .
