Kendrick Lamar Announces 2022 Tour

Kendrick Lamar has announced a 2022 tour in conjunction with his new album Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers . Joining Lamar on the road are pgLang artists and Mr. Morale contributors Baby Keem and Tanna Leone. Check out the full list of dates below.

Baby Keem, who released The Melodic Blue last year, contributed to four Mr. Morale tracks: “N95,” “Die Hard,” “Savior (Interlude),” and “Savior.” Tanna Leone just released Sleepy Soldier via pgLang and Def Jam Recordings, and he is on Lamar’s “Mr. Morale.”

The album and tour announcement follow the release of his new single “ The Heart Part 5 ,” which arrived with an unsettling video where the rapper’s face morphed into deepfakes of OJ Simpson, Kanye West, Kobe Bryant, Nipsey Hussle, Jussie Smollett, and Will Smith. It was directed by Lamar and Dave Free, while South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone’s studio Deep Voodoo was behind the deepfake work. Lamar is a co-producer with Parker and Stone on an upcoming live-action comedy film.

Lamar announced Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers in April by tweeting a link to his Oklama website. Back in August, Lamar announced that his next record would be his “ Final TDE Album .” He shared the news in a statement posted to his website and signed as “Oklama.” Top Dawg Entertainment CEO Anthony “Top Dawg” Tiffith has referred Lamar’s upcoming album as his victory lap. The album’s artwork , photographed by Renell Medrano , features Lamar in a crown of thorns holding a child; in the background is a woman with a baby.

After his Pulitzer-winning Damn. in 2017, Lamar curated and contributed to the Black Panther soundtrack before collaborating with Anderson .Paak for “ Tints ” and his Top Dawg label mate Sir on “ Hair Down .”

In March 2020, Lamar launched the multi-service firm pgLang with Dave Free. The company produced a video campaign for Calvin Klein that featured Brent Faiyaz, Baby Keem, and Mecca Allah. Kendrick Lamar returned in the fall to contribute to Busta Rhymes’ “ Look Over Your Shoulder ,” which sampled the Jackson 5’s “I’ll Be There.”

In 2021, Kendrick Lamar worked with Baby Keem on The Melodic Blue , rapping on “ Family Ties ” and “ Range Brothers ” and also contributing to “Vent.” The record came out via pgLang, which had issued “ Hooligans ” and “ Sons & Critics Freestyle ” in conjunction with Columbia Records. “Family Ties” went on to win the Best Rap Performance Award at the 2022 Grammys . Lamar also made a guest appearance on Drones , the most recent album by his frequent collaborator Terrace Martin. He joined Ty Dolla $ign, Snoop Dogg, and James Fauntleroy on the title track to the record.

Kendrick Lamar performed in February at the 2022 Super Bowl halftime show alongside Dr. Dre, Eminem, Snoop Dogg, and Mary J. Blige. The program was part of Roc Nation’s production deal with the NFL, overseen by Jay-Z. Lamar will perform headlining slots at this year’s Glastonbury festival as well as Rolling Loud Miami .

Just hours after Kendrick Lamar dropped his long-awaited fifth full-length album, “Mr. Morale and the Big Steppers, ” he’s unveiled dates for a massive tour in support of the album, launching in Oklahoma on July 19, moving across North America, Europe and Australia before wrapping in New Zealand late in December, some five months after it launches. See the full itinerary below.

Support acts on “The Big Steppers Tour” — which has a tagline of “Come help Mr. Morale get out of the box” — is Lamar’s nephew, Baby Keem, on all dates and Tanna Leone, who also appears on the album, on select dates; the tour is sponsored by Amazon Music, Rotation and Cash App.

Kendrick Lamar Announces 'The Big Steppers Tour'

Fresh off the release of his double album, Kendrick Lamar has announced a tour.

The Compton rapper is bringing Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers to the global stage on “The Big Steppers Tour,” with support from pgLang’s own Baby Keem and Tanna Leone.

The worldwide trek, sponsored by Amazon Music, Rotation, and Cash App, kicks off July 19 in Oklahoma City before hitting arenas across the U.S. and Canada, with stops in Brooklyn, Miami, Chicago, Atlanta, and Dallas. The North American leg wraps with two back-to-back shows at L.A.’s Crypto.com Arena on Sept. 14 and 15.

The oklama will then head to Europe for a two-month trek, including stops in Paris, Berlin, and London. It all winds down in December with a series of shows in Australia and New Zealand.

On Friday, Kendrick returned with his long-awaited album Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers featuring Baby Keem, Kodak Black, Summer Walker, Ghostface Killah, Sampha, Blxst, and more.

Kendrick Lamar is a rapper born on the 17th of June 1987 in Compton, California, USA. Since the release of his mixtape “Overly Dedicated”, and his second album “good kid, m.A.A.d city”, he has proved himself to be one of the most exciting, critically acclaimed rappers of his generation.

Kendrick Lamar founded the hip-hop supergroup, Black Hippy, in 2009, with the artists Ab-Soul, Jay Rock, and ScHoolboy Q. That same year, he began using his first and middle names with the release of his self-titled debut EP. In 2010, he released his fourth solo mixtape, Overly Dedicated.

Following the release of Overly Dedicated, Lamar began working on his first studio album. Section.80 dropped in 2011, debuting at number 113 on the US Billboard 200 chart. The album was met with many positive reviews, and Kendrick’s star began to rise.

In 2012, Kendrick Lamar signed a record deal with Dr. Dre’s Aftermath Entertainment. That October, he released his first major-label album, Good Kid, M.A.A.D City, a concept album telling the story of the rapper’s early life experiences with drugs and gangs in Compton. The album was a breakout success, producing five single which of which achieved success on the charts and earning Lamar four GRAMMY® Award nominations. In 2013, Kendrick Lamar set out on a world tour to promote the album with the other members of Black Hippy.

By the time Kendrick Lamar released his third studio album, he was already a household name. In 2015, To Pimp a Butterfly debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200 chart, Lamar’s first album to do so. It received mass critical acclaim and was nominated for seven GRAMMY® Awards. Kendrick Lamar took home two wins, including Best Rap Album and Album of the Year.

Kendrick Lamar also enjoyed his first number-one single in 2015. His hip-hop remix of Taylor Swift’s “Bad Blood” topped the US Billboard Hot 100 chart.

After the release of To Pimp a Butterfly, Lamar’s profile soared. His fourth studio album, DAMN., dropped in 2017, producing his second number-one single, “HUMBLE.” The song not only topped the charts, it won Best Rap Performance, Best Rap Song, and Best Music Video at the 2018 Grammy Awards and the Pulitzer Prize for Music.

Following the success of “DAMN.,” Lamar moved onto his first movie project: a curated soundtrack for Marvel’s Black Panther. Black Panther: The Album, released in 2018, included a wide range of Black artists including Future, SZA, Vince Staples, Travis Scott, and The Weeknd, with Lamar himself performing on five of the 14 tracks.

After launching a multimedia company in 2020, Kendrick Lamar returned to music with his fifth studio album, Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers. Released in 2022, the double album would be his final project with Top Dawg Entertainment. Debuting at number one on the US Billboard 200 chart, it became the rapper’s fourth number-one album. On Apple Music, the album garnered over 60 million streams in its first day. It also became the first hip-hop album in 2022 to reach one billion streams on Spotify.

To date, Kendrick Lamar has sold over 70 million records in the US, and every one of his studio albums has been certified platinum by the Record Industry Association of America (RIAA). The rapper also has 14 Grammy Awards, 11 MTV Video Music Awards, six Billboard Music Awards, and a Pulitzer Prize to his name. This phenomenal success solidifies his status as one of the most influential hip-hop artists of all time.

Live reviews

An all around great show. Dram and YG were impressive opening acts, even tho the crowd was a bit dead until Kendrick showed up. YG played "Fuck Donald Trump" which was preceded by a Trump impersonator and was genuinely really surprising and hilarious. Once Kendrick showed up, every seat was filled, it was chaotic, and there was a hell of a lot of screaming. Right before he ascended onto the stage from the little platform in the middle of the stage- which was exactly on time, I should add- there was a really cool showing of this ninja performance, as well as a story-like, cinematic, short where he battled someone, and funny title screens showed up from time to time saying phrases like "KENDRICK FUCKS SHIT UP". Similar clips were shown sporadically throughout the show so the crowd wouldn't get bored as they prepared for different parts of the act. It was cool when he got raised on this platform in the middle of the arena to perform "Money Tree", but the most beautiful part of the show was definitely when he played "LOVE." and just about every person had their phone's flashlights on, swaying side to side, chanting, "love me." It was stunning. Probably the wildest time, for me, was when he played "Alright," near the end. That song is really emotional for me, and seeing him play it live was magnificent. Not to mention how, just like with every other song, so many other people were shouting the lyrics, words for word. Afterwards, there was "HUMBLE." which Kendrick made the crowd sing the entirety of. It was then played a second time, where he sung along, and then descended back underneath the stage. Lots of people thought it was over, but some friends and I had checked the set-list and knew to stay put. Soon enough, he was right back on stage, and played the final song, "GOD." It wasn't quite as strong of a finish as 'HUMBLE." but was nonetheless an undoubtedly great song. If I could, I would experience it all over again, minus the ear ringing that lasted until the middle of the next day, a near loss of voice, and needing to skip the next day of school. Another highlight was seeing the uncomfortable white parents who brought their kids. It was amusing to watch them try to dance, shout-out to those guys. One dad brought this, like, eight year old kid who covered her ears when we screamed (understandable considering how ear-piercing it was, but still), and sat down except for when "HUMBLE." was playing. The dad was on his phone the entire time, though. It was amusing, the concert as a whole was unbelievably fun, I hope anyone who gets to see Kung Fu Kenny at some point has a hell of a good time. Heads up: they may not have the merch you want in your size or even at all, but they have other things that are just as good. Also, eat before you go, the lines are crazy long and the food way is too expensive. Anyway, have a blast, don't say the n-word if you're not black. Thank you.

Amazing performance by Kendrick. His energy was great and he interacted with the sold out crowd making eye contact and listening to their screams and yells every chance he got.

Started off by teasing the crowd going back and forth to the mic and eventually starting with For Free, spitting bar after bar.

Best moment of the show was Alright / M.A.A.D City and definitely finishing with ADHD after he gauged the audiences reactions to him calling out all his albums he could see Section.80 was big for the crowd.

After he noticed a small group of people in the front row rapping a song from Untitled Unmastered we all started calling out songs to do from the album. Calling out “2” and “7” putting our fingers up as Kendrick looked at us contemplating whether he should do it for a good minute. A chant broke out for “We Gon’ Be Alright’ and then he played “Alright”. A part of me still thinks if they didn’t start chanting that he would’ve gone into one of the songs.

Only critique was the sound. From the front row the vocals were heavily drowning out by the live instrumentals so much so it took me 20-30 seconds before realising what song it was sometimes. Not all songs, ADHD was the most easily heard because they didn’t use as much heavy instrumentation. But the problem wasn’t throughout the whole stadium as I talked to those in seats they couldn’t relate to it sounding like that.

It was disappointing not to see there wasn’t an emphasis on visual display for his Australia tour like previous performances in the US, but it seemed like it was just about Kendrick, his band and straight music.

Also, never seen so many people have to be carried out by security guards over the barrier because they were hurt/passing out. Also saw one big guy walk being escorted through the barrier with half his face covered in blood from the corner of his eye. Kendrick fans don’t play.

He ended up finishing with ‘I Am’ off his Kendrick Lamar EP which is above.

I saw Kendrick Lamar on day two of Lollapalooza last summer. This was probably one of the craziest concerts I've been to, but I loved every minute of it! There was a special opportunity to meet the man himself before his concert, but my friends and I did not get there in time. The only other way to meet him was to each pay for a CD. We ended up deciding to wait for the concert that was going on before Kendrick to finish then try to get good spots. We thought the crowd would disperse after that concert, so it would be pretty easy to get close to the front. But, boy, were we wrong. Either everyone was thinking the same thing as us, or the crowd was staying for Kendrick - it was the most claustrophobic, sweaty, aggressive struggle to the front of the crowd I've ever experienced. My friends and I were forced to stand smushed against random people for forty minutes. I don't even know how we made it to a couple of rows from the front, but we eventually did.

After what seemed to be like the longest, stuffiest forty minutes of my life, Kendrick finally came on. He started out with "Fucking Problems," and the crowd went CRAZY! We were nonstop jostling the whole time. Kendrick is so on point live! Even though I was taken aback at first by how his voice did not sound the same as his audio tracks, he still was amazing. He challenged us to see if we all could keep up with him when he rapped. He knew how to keep the energy up the whole time. One of the most memorable moments in Kendrick's show was when he completely stopped in the middle of a song and pointed out to a spot in the crowd where a man in a wheelchair was crowd surfing. Kendrick commended the people that helped the man surf through the crowd while he was passed to the front over the crowd. It was a really cool moment to witness. Only places like Lolla would something like that happen, and I'm happy that I could see Kendrick how I did, all the craziness included.

I have always been an avid fan of Kendrick Lamar ever since his album "Section .80". He just has a way to capture your emotions because he raps the truth. As much as that sounds really corny, I think one would understand where I'm coming from if you saw him live. I had the privilege to see Kendrick Lamar front row at Fuji Rock Festival 2013 last summer. I'm not sure if this is the case for many of his shows but he came on a little later than expected. Despite that, he really pulled a great show and tried his best to make up for the time lost although he could've sung more if he came on earlier. Anyways, regardless I think what made Kendrick special was that other than lighting, some fog, and a few guys playing the beats for his songs with guitars and drums, it was really just him standing alone on stage rapping. I remember standing out and just really feeling the vibes while Kendrick stood in the spotlight surrounded by this dim purple lighting, melodically rapping and being slowly creeped on by some fog on a chilly summer night up in the mountains. It was actually quite mystical. Many Japanese fans seemed to love "Backseat Freestyle" and "Money Trees", as I felt more pushing from the crowd during those songs. Of course he also rapped "Bitch Don't Kill My Vibe", "The Recipe", "Swimming Pools", and his best songs in "good kid, mad city". One surprise during this concert was he also rapped "Fucking Problems" which was a huge hit for everyone and that was lots of fun. The concert was overall so good and worth being pushed around while I clung onto my spot in the front because Kendrick blew a kiss at my direction after I yelled out his name!

Overall I left the show pretty happy and satisfied, thought there were a few problems. To get the negatives out of the way, Travis Scott, one of the openers set to perform, didn't. The entire concert was interrupted with an intermission over an hour long due to Travis's absence, which really halted the momentum of the event. Another negative was that they played SZA's latest album "Ctrl" around 3 times in full between the opening set up and various intermissions. Even if you love this album, hearing the same songs repeatedly can get old quick. I would have much preferred if they mixed it up a bit, and at least play music from other TDE artist in addition to SZA's album.

Besides that the show was great though. DRAM did a pretty nice job with his brief set. He sounded great live, very close to how he sounds in his recordings, and the images he had flashing behind him created a fun atmosphere.

And once Kendrick came out and performed, it was fantastic. He performed a variety of songs, mainly from DAMN. as well as a few off of GKMC, TPAB, and UU. He was energetic throughout the performance, constantly moving, and engaged the audience, encouraging a hype atmosphere. The best part was easily during humble, when the crowd finished out one of the verses and the chorus together; it was truly communal. Due to our excitement Kendrick performed an encore with the song YAH.

Overall I'd recommend going to the concert if you're a fan of Kendrick Lamar, or hip-hop shows in general. I had a great time, even with some gripes, and would gladly experience it again.

The set list set out a journey that had the whole place shaking from start to finish. The SSE arena managed capture all this energy and let it simmer around for everyone to feed off throughout the whole because every man/woman yout and old were bouncing like they were trying to bring the place down.

Kendrick Lamar is no doubt a rap genius and probably the biggest in the world right now. The DAMN tour took us through the Kung Fu Kenny journey with amazing video graphics during short intermissions between songs as intros and gave enough storyline to the attendees to be enraptured by this and gas the whole crowd up for each moment!

It’s hard to pin one moment down but when the whole crowd started singing Humble twice over without the help of Kendrick for then him to come out and say this has got to be the best show yet.... man, I had goosebumps and was ready to stomp.

Kenrick Lamar is considered to be one of the most exciting new artists on the US hip hop scene. He has amassed a cult following over the years and now with new support on both sides of the pond, Lamar is packing out venues and festival tents at a staggering rate.

Rapturous cheers go up as Kendrick confidently appears onstage and takes the whole scene within his stride as the bass pierces the crowd and he begins 'Money Trees'. His freestyle ability demonstrates just why he has so much critical acclaim, he is undoubtedly a talented rap artist.

Breakthrough single 'Swimming Pools' gets a deafening reaction as it has become a cult hit over a relatively short amount of time. Kendrick capitalises on this as he invites the audiences into a back and forth of 'Pass Out... Drank'. 'Bitch Don't Kill My Vibe' also goes down incredibly well, the audience seemingly knowing every rap and verse. He reappears for 'A.D.H.D' visibly happy with the set and the crowd, it will be interesting to see where he will take his sound and show next.

I was sitting in the front on a chiar and once travis scott came up, he called everyone next to the stage and the crowd went crazy and it was chaotic. Everyone from the back seats came all the way to the front and everyone climbed on the chairs and it was hard to see anything. The security tried to get people back to their seats but they did not suceed. I thought it was unfair because i paid a lot of money to stay in front and the ones who had their seats in the back got to pay less but still get to stay in the very front. Also, everyone was high and drunk. The guy in front of me fell off his chair and spilled a whole cup of beer all over me and the 3 people next to me. I do not recommend paying for a seat right in front of the stage because everyone from behind will come in front anyways. Overall, the concert was not well organized since the secrity could not get people to their seats, but, the actual performance by kendrick lamar was a good one and he was able to keep everyone entertained.

Kanye West , Kendrick Lamar and Future will headline 2022 Rolling Loud Miami. The festival returns to Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens on July 22-24 for its seventh edition. Tickets go on sale Monday, March 7 at 12 p.m. ET.

Ye heads up the first night’s festivities, while Future headlines on Saturday and Kendrick Lamar tops the bill on Sunday. Ye tapped Future to executive produce Donda 2 , which dropped last month. Lamar — whose most recent songs have been collaborations on Baby Keem’s The Melodic Blue — performed with Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Eminem and Mary J. Blige during the Super Bowl halftime show last month.

Gunna, Lil Uzi Vert, Playboi Carti, Lil Baby, Saweetie, Lil Durk, Don Toliver, Baby Keem, City Girls, Ski Mask The Slump God, Gucci Mane, 2 Chainz, Three 6 Mafia, are among the lineup of more than 100 acts slated to perform.

Last year, Rolling Loud’s flagship fest in Miami featured rousing sets from Travis Scott, Lil Baby, Megan Thee Stallion, Young Thug and Rico Nasty. While some artists stood out for great performances, another found himself remembered for a set filled with controversial remarks. DaBaby’s onstage homophobic remarks  led to him being removed from several festival lineups . A woman who attended the festival also went missing , but was later found.

Last night, 14 time GRAMMY-Award winner, Pulitzer Prize winner, and Academy Award nominee Kendrick Lamar kicked off his global The Big Steppers Tour in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma at Paycom Center.

Kendrick took to the stage after his five year hiatus to give fans a powerful performance of his latest critically acclaimed album Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers , featuring “Silent Hill,” “N95,” and “Savior.” Additionally, Kendrick thrilled the crowd with versions of chart-topping hits like “HUMBLE.,” “Money Trees,” and “Alright.”

The massive 65 show international tour, produced by Live Nation, will continue on Thursday, July 21 in Austin, TX and make additional stops in North America, Europe, and Australia before wrapping up in New Zealand on December 17 with a performance at Auckland’s Spark Arena.

ScHoolboy Q, Jhené Aiko, And Sublime: Currently Trending Songs

Kendrick Lamar’s wildly anticipated new album,  Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers , hit the top spot in the US Billboard album charts upon its release, with the biggest first-week sales in 2022 so far.

The album was released on May 13 , and narrowly missed out on the UK Number One album to Florence + The Machine‘s Dance Fever after a heated chart battle.

In the US, Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers became Lamar’s fourth album to hit No.1 on the Billboard 200, becoming the fastest-selling album of the year so far, selling 295,500 equivalent album units across its first week.  According to Billboard, the album breaks a record set only the previous week by Bad Bunny‘s new album Un Verano Sin Ti .

In a five-star review, NME called Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers a “cathartic, soul-baring autobiography” that “serves up vignettes about what it’s like to be a Black adult whose trauma still haunts them. In laying his soul bare, he hopes we realise how we can set ourselves free from generational curses too. This album is as much about struggle as it is freedom, and what a beautiful sentiment that is.”

It remains to be seen who all of the friends will be joining DJ Hed, Mustard, and Lamar during their respective sets, but rap’s biggest names are presumably all possibilities — except for Drake, of course.

As of this writing, DJ Hed’s set is underway. TDE’s Ray Vaughn popped out to perform “Problems.” DJ Hed quipped, “They say the West Coast can’t rap? That’s crazy.” Then, he proceeded to welcome Cuzzos for a short stint on stage before Rucci and AzChike ran out to perform their collaborative track “Light It Up.” The revolving door of guest performers continued with Jay Worthy & Meet The Whoops, Wallie The Sensei, Westside Boogie, Zoe Osama, Kalan.FrFr & G Perico, Bino Rideaux, BlueBucksClan, RJMrLA, OhGeesy, Jason Martin, and Tommy The Clown.

On Tuesday (June 18), DJ Hed shared the performers scheduled to appear at Kendrick's upcoming The Pop Out show at Los Angeles' Kia Forum on Wednesday (June 19). It still remains unclear who makes up these different friend groups, but fans will find out soon. However, with Mustard in tow, it's more then likely Kendrick will perform his "Not Like Us" diss track for the first time, which Mustard produced.

Amazon Music previously announced on June 7 that it would be streaming the Pop Out concert. The show is presented by pgLang and Free Lunch, and will be live streamed on Amazon Music's Twitch and Prime Video channels .

K-Dot announced  The Pop Out - Ken & Friends Concert on June 7. The show is incredibly exciting considering this will be the first time Kendrick is performing since going toe-to-toe with Drake . Additionally, Kendrick's frequent collaborator Terrace Martin recently  teased a new Kendrick project  during an Instagram Live session.

"It's two albums, I'm going crazy, I can't wait till they drop," Terrace explained. "Roddy Ricch album and whenever Kendrick drops his album, I'm gon' be... I'm excited for those two. Those two Compton artists. So much s**t bubblin'."

This presumably could mean that those in attendance at Kendrick's Pop Out event might hear some new music from the rapper. Kendrick hasn't released an album since  Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers in 2022.

Last night’s (June 19) ‘The Pop-Out: Ken and Friends’ show featuring headliner Kendrick Lamar had the city of Los Angeles in a chokehold thanks not only to the man of the hour hitting fans with his many classics — including latest smash , “Not Like Us,” — but due to the many “friends” he brought along, making for an unforgettable night of Hip-Hop.

K. Dot was sure to show love to his fellow West Coast rappers, as Tyler, the Creator, YG , and more from the Golden State all hit the stage. The show even brought about a reunion for TDE ‘s Black Hippy, featuring members Lamar, Jay Rock, Schoolboy Q, and Ab-Soul.

Things weren’t just crackin’ on stage, however, as plenty of celebrity friends and fans of the Compton wordsmith showed up just to enjoy the festivities, including LeBron James and proud LA natives DeMar DeRozen and Russell Westbrook , both of whom also hit the stage with the battle-tested MC.

Kendrick lamar takes the west coast off standby, the rapper's blowout juneteenth concert planted a flag for regional music, and a fresh dagger in a certain rival's heart.

When Kendrick Lamar released Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers in 2022, he was jittery with agitation. There were many reasons within the songs for him to be anxious, which spend hard-earned therapy hours working through trauma, but he seemed most perplexed by those outside of his process seeking his voice in their struggles. His perceived silence during the dog days of activism in the early pandemic was met with questions and criticism, and in the face of those broader discussions, he made clear he would not be goaded into action. On “ Savior ,” he responded: “The cat is out the bag, I am not your savior,” later adding, “I rubbed elbows with people that was for the people / They all greedy, I don’t care for no public speaking / And they like to wonder where I’ve been / Protecting my soul in the valley of silence.” He did not want the burden of speaking for the culture, and felt it wasn’t in his job description.

We as listeners are not entitled to any artist sounding off, especially when they are protecting their souls, and while it is fair to ask a socially aware rapper to use his platform as a megaphone for the issues bearing down on his community, I think often of the 2004 Dave Chappelle joke about Ja Rule and 9/11: We don’t need everyone to talk about everything; sometimes, they aren’t equipped. Everything is political, but music is not politics. Songs are just songs unless actively weaponized. Kendrick was right in the sense that his raps, while galvanizing, could not save the people moved by them. And yet, the sharpness of his rebuttal felt nearly antagonistic coming from the rapper who talked about a trip to South Africa giving him awareness and pride, who stared down Fox News commentator Geraldo Rivera and who made “ Alright .”

Tellingly, Kendrick did not perform a single song off of Mr. Morale at “The Pop Out,” his Juneteenth event last night at the Forum in Los Angeles, live-streamed by Amazon Music. The energy wouldn’t have fit the experience, which was not about avoiding the onus but sharing the platform. The significance of the occasion brought certain expectations: the Compton rapper embracing the moment in a way that he had not previously, speaking more directly to and for the “we” of “Alright” and “ Not Like Us .” But in a grander sense, he seemed to be after a different kind of community organizing. The show quickly began to feel like a cookout he was sponsoring, where names like Remble and G Perico were familiar and welcome. Several generations of LA rappers made guest appearances, and Kendrick repeatedly talked about cultivating the new generation, hoping to sustain West Coast hip-hop across the next two decades. In his time of ascension, the most fearsome rapper working made a coalition of his crusade.

Whither the West Coast gangsta?

The event was broken up into three “& Friends” sets that seemed to build upon one another. After a DJ Hed set that brought out a colorful cast of lesser-known LA fixtures (Remble, Westside Boogie , RJMrLA, BlueBucksClan, Ohgeesy), “Not Like Us” architect Mustard, a pivotal West Coast player in his own right, set the tone for the rest of the night, the crowd reacting gleefully as the producer escorted noted locals through a handful of hits apiece. Some of those guests came with personal history: Mustard pointed out that Ty Dolla $ign taught him how to make beats before they launched into a song built on one of the first beats Mustard ever made, “ Paranoid .” Later, before leaping through a mini-set with longtime partner in crime YG , he waxed nostalgic about living across from the Forum long before they got on, working on the album that would break things open for both of them, My Krazy Life . Blog-era staples (Dom Kennedy) rubbed shoulders with chart-topping anomalies ( Roddy Ricch ), and there were particularly grand receptions for two artists on the outer edges of the LA hip-hop scene: the guitarist turned surprise sensation Steve Lacy and the Odd Future auteur Tyler, the Creator .

The “friends” Kendrick had in mind for his own circling of the bases seemed to consider the team-building that made his run possible. Mid-set, he reunited the original TDE foursome Black Hippy — Jay Rock , Ab-Soul , ScHoolboy Q and himself — by bringing each rapper up individually to receive a well-earned salute from the crowd. The gesture was cathartic for a certain kind of rap fan. Kendrick cut ties with TDE in 2020 to start pgLang with former label co-president Dave Free; he hasn’t made a song with another Black Hippy member in years. But rounding up the gang and taking a little tour of a few songs from the glory days seemed to bring an almost childlike delight out of him — playing hype man for Jay Rock during “ Win ,” which is like stadium catnip, and the freaky Mike WiLL joint “ King’s Dead ,” and teaming up with Q for the hard-bopping “ Collard Greens .” (The reunion’s deep sense of camaraderie could have only been improved by an impromptu run-through of the “Black Lip Bastard” remix.) When Kendrick rocked “ King Kunta ,” the others danced around the stage like no one was watching, with the that’s my jam! enthusiasm of a favorite song suddenly spilling out of a boombox.

This symbolic act, gathering the pillars of one of rap’s most important indie movements of the last 25 years, was clearly a microcosm of the evening’s larger theme of cross-color solidarity: coming together in awe of what was built collectively, and looking to its foundations as evidence of a monument whose peaks could reach even higher. “This is unity at its finest,” Kendrick said at one point, having brought dozens of Los Angeles figures onto the stage for a group photo that called to mind 2005’s “ Great Day ” shoot in Atlanta and the 1958 Harlem jazz roundup that inspired it. “For all of us to be together onstage, that s*** is special. Everybody on this stage got fallen soldiers.” But it was hard to overlook the fact that the thing unifying the coast in this moment was not love but hate, and Kendrick, the self-proclaimed biggest Drake hater , was primarily operating in his capacity as speaker for the culture in his personal war with the Toronto high roller. If the matter wasn’t settled before, then it certainly is now.

Black Hippy, A New Hip-Hop Recipe With A Familiar Sound

In that light, it was striking how many lines from old Kendrick songs now read like disses, in the context of a show that often played like a block party interrupting a wake. As Kendrick paraded the audience through hallmarks of his career — his first hit (“ Swimming Pools ”), his first No. 1 (“ HUMBLE. ”), his blockbuster soundtrack (“King’s Dead”), his American anthem (“Alright”) — he was also taking them on a guided tour past a corpse, and so every time a lyric rang off that matched the tenor of his animosity, the words felt retroactively prescient. “Most of y’all throw rocks and try to hide your hand / Just say his name and I promise that you’ll see Candyman.” “I can dig rappin’, but a rapper with a ghostwriter, what the f*** happened?” “You ain’t really wild, you a tourist.” “I don’t do it for the ‘Gram, I do it for Compton." I kept seeing Drake’s face in so many of the verses. Of course, the targeted diss tracks were right there in the rotation, in conversation with Kendrick’s rise to top dawg. Choosing violence, he opened with “ Euphoria ” and performed every Drake diss except “Meet the Grahams.” Each one punctuated an otherwise raucous set full of crowd-pleasers that crescendoed into a performance of “California Love” with Dr. Dre . When Dre paused his exit from the stage to utter the words “I see dead people,” it felt like the spark setting off a powder keg that had been waiting to blow all night long. Kendrick, sensing the moment, did not let it slip past him.

“Not Like Us” commanded its own portion of the show, where it rang out like a clarion call. He played the song five times in a row, each rendition more jubilant than the last. When he ran it back the first time, after holding onto the “A minor” line for dear life, he let the crowd rap the verse word-for-word as he bobbed around the stage, encouraging them to shout “Certified Lover Boy, certified pedophile” and drag that vowel to the moon and back. By the fourth run, Mustard had led a convoy of people onto the stage. As they came streaming to Kendrick’s side, the camera caught several of their faces: many of the performers from across the day, the NBA stars DeMar DeRozan and Russell Westbrook, the radio host Big Boy. The effect was the sensation that all of Los Angeles was on stage with him — “Bloods, Crips, Pirus,” as he put it. “Show the world this.” By the time they took that group photo, it seemed as if they had.

When “The Pop Out” was all over, “Win” felt like the most fitting summation of the night. The song’s battle cry — “You either with me or against me, ho!” — rang true for a rapper who had seemingly rallied the entire world, its ultimatum answered in the overwhelming support shown for his cause on this day. It was a resounding win for him, of course, but the night also felt like a win for regional music, its distinct style and sound and swagger, a win for an unscalable kind of hip-hop that is supposedly being blotted out by more centrist hip-pop, and a win for the culture, which Kendrick is so adamant about speaking for now. Sometimes, it just takes the right opportunity.

He’s What The “Culture Feelin’” Though the crowd was not in its entirety a Black one, the spirit of Juneteenth was a big part of the evening considering the historical relevance of the holiday. From the excited vendors leading up to the venue, to the smiles on everyone’s faces once they entered the building, the feeling was unity. People of all ages and backgrounds fought off a lot of ticket resellers for the chance to experience this day together and you could feel that energy. The choice to have this show on this day was undeniable.

He Performed “Not Like Us” Five Times If there was any doubt that Kendrick would shy away from his extensive beef with Drake, that evaporated as soon as he rose from the stage and started the lyrics of “Euphoria”. Now his set didn’t stray away from his hits like “DNA”, “King Kunta”, and “Humble.” And with the occasion being Juneteenth in many ways his performance of “Alright” hit the exact cultural note that people were waiting on “Not Like Us” to deliver. But after also swinging into “6:16 in LA” the crowd went feral when “Mustard on the Beat” was heard on the speakers and “Not Like Us” began. The audience hung on every word and even extended his iconic “a-minor” line acapella. But nobody expected him to repeat the song 5 times. He continued to bring it back and the energy never dipped. The song even played as he excited the stage and the instrumental served as the soundtrack for fans exiting the venue. Not sure anybody was questioning it at this point, but he does seem to really hate Drake. What was unexpected is that a song about who he refers to as a “colonizer” has turned into what is clearly the anthem of Juneteenth. As he ended the show he stated: “It ain’t got nothing to do with no back and forth records. It’s got everything to do with this moment right here. That’s what this shit was about. To bring all of us together.”

One-time collaborators Drake and Kendrick Lamar have been feuding for over a decade through diss tracks, but it's been a few years since they really went head-to-head. That changed in recent weeks as a vicious battle between the two rappers rapidly picked up speed and brutality. Lamar released a diss track in March in response to the song 'First Person Shooter' by J. Cole and Drake, in which they referred to themselves and Lamar as the "Big Three" in rap. He ridiculed the idea, rapping, there's only the "Big Me." This was followed by a diss track from Drake in April, calling Lamar a pipsqueak, followed by another diss track by Lamar at the end of the month. Initially, the two hip-hop stars kept things relatively civil, only going for the usual potshots; Drake making fun of Lamar's small stature and Lamar attacking Drake's music. However, it started getting more personal as the days passed and the pair started dropping response tracks at greater speed.

On May 4, Drake released the song 'Family Matters' in which he insinuated that Kendrick Lamar is physically abusive towards his fiancée, Whitney Alford. “When you put your hands on your girl, is it self-defense ’cause she’s bigger than you?” he raps. Lamar dropped a scathing response on the same day titled 'Meet the Grahams.' He accuses Drake of abandoning and lying about multiple children, as well as using Ozempic and having plastic surgery. He followed that up with a second diss track in the same 24-hour period, 'Not Like Us.' “Say, Drake, I hear you like ‘em young / You better not ever go to cell block one,” Lamar raps, referring to rumors that Drake has groomed underage girls. He later adds “Certified Lover Boy? Certified pedophiles." Referring to the title of Drake's 2021 album while making an incredibly serious accusation. Drake followed up on May 5 with the song 'The Heart Part 6' in which he denies the allegations but suggests that this line of attack is inspired by Lamar's own history. He references Lamar's 2022 album 'Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers,' claiming that Lamar alluded to being molested as a child in some of the songs. It's hard to think of another rap feud that got as dark and as personal as this one in just two days.

Speaking on the 'Happy Sad Confused' podcast, Cena acknowledged his mistake in 2011 when Johnson, already a successful movie star, returned to the WWE after a decade-long absence. West attempted to coincide the release of his album 'Donda' with Drake's album 'Certified Lover Boy', leading Drake to respond in a Trippie Red song. They seemed to bury the hatchet towards the end of the year, but it didn't last for long. 

Drake and Kanye "Ye" West's feud seemed to have ended in 2021 after a period of quiet, but Drake went on to mock his old adversary in 2023. During an episode of Sound 42’s 'The Fry Yiy Show' on SiriusXM Radio, the Canadian rapper previewed a track called 'Rescue Me' which includes a sample of Kim Kardashian discussing her divorce with Ye, in which she says, “I didn’t come this far, just to come this far and not be happy."

Eric Braeden vs Eva Longoria

During an appearance on 'Who's Talking to Chris Wallace,' Eva Longoria was reminded of her breakthrough role on the popular soap opera 'The Young and the Restless.' With a laugh, the actress responded, "Oh god, don't show a clip." After the clip was played, she laughed again and exclaimed, "I can't believe you found that." Longoria went on to talk about how she had to work at a temp agency alongside her role on the show because it "didn't pay enough for [her] to live off being an actor."  However, these seemingly harmless comments were taken as direct insults by Eric Braeden, who portrayed Victor Newman on 'Young and the Restless.' Braeden began his response with a series of tweets, saying, "EVA LONGORIA: you just made derogatory remarks about daytime actors! You simply weren't good enough to handle the pressures of this medium!" One Twitter user weighed in, claiming, " "She was awful as Isabella. We used to laugh at her scenes," and Braeden replied, "There you go! She was a caricature!!" 

Offset vs Quavo

Offset and Quavo of Migos were reportedly involved in a backstage altercation at the 2023 Grammys prior to a tribute performance honoring their late bandmate, Takeoff. In a video obtained by Entertainment Tonight, Cardi B can be seen breaking up the fight and expressing her disapproval by yelling, "Both of y'all wrong. Both of y'all! This is not right." Cardi added, "you shouldn’t have been talking.” Sources revealed that the dispute revolved around the execution of the tribute, with TMZ reporting that Quavo supposedly declined to include Offset in the performance, despite the Recording Academy’s request for them to collaborate on stage. Migos later officially disbanded.

Mel B vs James Corden

During her appearance on Britain's 'The Big Narstie Show' on December 2, Mel B was direct in naming the "biggest [ ]head" she has ever encountered. According to The Wrap, the former Spice Girl wasted no time mentioning a few names: "James Corden, Geri Halliwell, Jessie J, and me." While she admitted her affection for Halliwell, Mel B also acknowledged that her former bandmate can sometimes be "really annoying." However, her tone changed when discussing 'Late Late Show' host James Corden. “I think you always have to be nice to the people that you work with—whether it be production, camera guys, sound, lighting,” she explained. “We all work for the same thing, so you should always be nice, and he hasn’t been very nice.”  Earlier in 2022, he was accused of being rude to staff at NYC's Balthazar restaurant. Mel B herself has appeared on Corden's show in both 2016 and 2018.

Tom Brady vs Antonio Brown

Antonio Brown once again crossed the line in his ongoing feud with Tom Brady, this time by posting a blatantly doctored photo of Gisele Bündchen on social media. The controversial former NFL wide receiver shared an image in which the model's face was edited onto another woman's body on his Snapchat account on November 21, 2022. There was no accompanying caption, leaving it unclear why Brown chose to involve Brady's ex-wife in this publicity stunt. However, the photo was swiftly removed from his profile. This incident adds to a series of strange social media attacks against Brady that Brown initiated back in October, right around the time of Brady's divorce. Brown shared a text conversation from 2021 in which the quarterback accused him of behaving like "a young immature man that is selfish, self-serving, irrational, and irresponsible," according to TMZ.

Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger have developed a close friendship in recent years, despite once having a strong dislike for each other. The two action stars, famous for their roles in movies like 'The Expendables' and 'Escape Plan', were actually fierce competitors during the 1980s and 1990s. Stallone openly admitted in an interview with Forbes that they "really disliked each other immensely" during that time.

Kanye West vs Pete Davidson

Kanye "Ye" West engaged in a one-sided feud with Pete Davidson following news of a romantic connection between the comedian and his ex-wife, Kim Kardashian. West's anger persisted even after Davidson and Kardashian ended their relationship. The rapper took to Instagram to vent his frustration, sharing messages exchanged with Kardashian regarding their children, and making threatening remarks towards Davidson. One of West's posts stated, "ask Pete how those tattoos of my kids doing in the trauma unit." Davidson had developed a close bond with Kardashian's children and had their initials tattooed on his neck. These posts were ultimately removed, allegedly because Kardashian was greatly displeased with West reverting to his previous behavior.

After enduring months of public criticism, Davidson, who does not use social media, shared screenshots of messages he sent to Ye through Twitter. These messages were confirmed to be authentic by E! News. The exchange began on March 13 when Ye began expressing family-related grievances.  He asked Ye to "calm down" because "Kim is the literally the best mother I've ever met," adding, "I've decided that I'm not gonna let you treat us this way anymore and I'm done being quiet. Grow ... up." When Ye asked where he was, Davidson replied with a photo of himself laying down and wrote, "In bed with your wife." He continued, "You don't scare me bro ... It's so sad to watch you ruin ur legacy on the daily," he wrote, while offering to meet in LA to talk things out between them. Ye told him to come to Sunday Service but Davidson said he didn't want the press. "What you are doing to your family is dangerous and going to scar them for life. Please handle these matters privately bro I beg you."

Sylvester Stallone vs Irwin Winkler

Sylvester Stallone has been using social media to discuss his feud with producer Irwin Winkler and Irwin's son, David Winkler. Irwin co-produced the 'Rocky' films and served as the producer for the 'Creed' spin-off series featuring Michael B. Jordan. Stallone has producing credits for the 'Creed' movies but not for 'Rocky,' even though he wrote, starred in, and sometimes directed them. In 2019, Stallone revealed that he had requested some ownership rights to the 'Rocky' franchise, considering his deep involvement in its creation. However, the Winklers dismissed his request, arguing that Stallone had the opportunity to star in the movies instead.  Stallone took to social media to criticize Winkler, arguing that it is unfair for the entire legacy of 'Rocky' to remain exclusively within the Winkler family. Stallone expressed the distressing nature of this topic, as he had intended to leave a lasting legacy of 'Rocky' for his own children.

Pusha T vs McDonald's

It is not widely known that rapper Pusha T and his brother collaborated on the creation of the iconic McDonald's jingle, "I'm Lovin' It." In a retaliatory move for their insultingly poor compensation, Pusha joined forces with Arby's to release a diss track aimed at the fast-food giant.  Seeking retribution, the rapper aligned himself with Arby's to not only promote their Spicy Fish Sandwich but also to take down their competition. Accompanying the track, Pusha tweeted the hashtag "#ArbysPaidMeButIWouldSayThisAnyway," indicating that he was indeed compensated for his participation. Rolling Stone verified that Pusha's revenge had a positive impact on his bank account.

Julia Fox vs Azealia Banks

On February 2022, Azealia Banks targeted Julia Fox, Kanye West's ex-girlfriend and Banks' former friend. In response to Fox's post that she isn't sad about her breakup with Ye but is instead a "#1 hustler," and "came up," Banks wrote on her Instagram Stories, "What did you hustle him for? A bag and some Lucien's? You absolutely did not come up because if this is how women who 'always date billionaires' behave when [stuff] goes south, threatening tell-all books... You can kiss your days as a low-rate escort goodbye, sis." What followed were a series of low blows and screenshots of messages posted to both of their Instagram Stories. Banks called Fox a "dirty junkie who was shooting up while she was pregnant."

Kanye West vs Pete Davidson vs Kid Cudi

During the Super Bowl weekend of 2022, Kanye "Ye" West sparked a conflict on his Instagram account, targeting Pete Davidson for obvious reasons and surprisingly, his longtime friend and collaborator, Kid Cudi. On February 12, in a since-deleted note to Instagram, Ye tagged Cudi as well as Kim Kardashian and wrote, "Just so everyone knows Cudi will not be on Donda [2] because he’s friends with you know who,” as per Billboard.  Cudi, who last collaborated with Ye on his 2021 'Donda' album, left a comment on Ye’s post that read: "Too bad I dont wanna be on ur album u [ ] dinosaur hahaha." He continued, "everyone knows ive been the best thing about ur albums since i met u. Ima pray for you brother.” Then Cudi tweeted, “We talked weeks ago about this. You’re whack for flipping the script and posting this lie just for a look on the internet. You ain’t no friend. BYE."

Kanye West vs Billie Eilish

Ye and Billie Eilish, co-headliners at Coachella, found themselves in a feud after Ye called her out for a comment she made during a recent concert in Atlanta. Eilish had halted her performance to address a distressed fan, reassuring the audience that her priority was their safety and well-being. From the stage, Eilish said "Don’t crowd…We’re taking care of our people, hold on. I wait for people to be ok until I keep going.” Ye interpreted these comments as an indirect diss to Travis Scott, who unknowingly continued performing while dozens of fans were injured, and some killed, in the crowd at Astroworld. He took to Instagram to accuse her of dissing Scott, and said "Come on Billie we love you. Please apologize to Trav and to the families of the people who lost their lives. No one intended this to happen.” He added, “Trav didn’t have any idea of what was happening when he was on stage and was very hurt by what happened, and yes Trav will be with me at Coachella, but now I need Billie to apologize before I perform.” Eilish responded a couple of hours later saying "Literally never said a thing about Travis. Was just helping a fan."  

Vin Diesel vs Dwayne Johnson

Vin Diesel and Dwayne Johnson's feud began during the production of 'The Fate of the Furious' in 2017. Diesel took to Instagram to criticize Johnson, claiming that the aggression between their characters on-screen was genuine. Since then, the two actors have not collaborated and have made disparaging remarks about each other in interviews, indicating a strained relationship. However, in November 2021, Diesel publicly reached out to Johnson, imploring him to return for the series' final film. In an open letter, he appealed to their previous camaraderie, referring to Johnson as his "little brother" and reminding him of the bonds they share with each other's families. Diesel also revealed that he had promised his late co-star and friend, Paul Walker, that he would give the franchise a satisfying conclusion.

A month later, Johnson responded to Diesel's public request with a candid interview on CNN. Adam McKay vs Will Ferrell

Will Ferrell and Adam McKay had a successful comedic partnership spanning more than 20 years, collaborating on popular films such as 'Anchorman,' 'Step Brothers,' and 'Talladega Nights.' In April 2019, they announced the end of their joint production company, Gloria Sanchez Productions, attributing it to McKay's increased capacity for producing. However, it seems there was more to the story, as Ferrell has completely severed ties with McKay. In an interview with Vanity Fair, McKay disclosed that their relationship reached its breaking point when he chose to cast John C. Reilly instead of Ferrell in his HBO drama series, without consulting Ferrell. Although McKay attempted to apologize and acknowledge his mishandling of the situation, he fears that Ferrell may never forgive him or speak to him again.

Logan Paul has ambitions of becoming a boxer, while Mayweather has been vocal about his feelings towards young YouTubers attempting to enter the boxing world. Their dispute originated on Twitter and strangely escalated to an official, high-profile boxing match. Mayweather, known for his attitude and provocative remarks, found himself facing an arrogant, aspiring YouTuber who believed he could defeat him, leading to chaos. The fight concluded with both contenders lasting the full eight rounds, and no winner being declared.
