West End Queen Kerry Ellis launches album and tour

Monday, April 24, 2023

The new album, ‘Kings & Queens’ builds on Kerry Ellis’s past form of fusing her signature Musical Theatre style with contemporary country and rock

kerry ellis tour dates

Musical Theatre leading lady Kerry Ellis has announced her fourth solo album and a corresponding UK tour.

Most recently seen tapping up a storm and belting out ‘Blow, Gabriel, Blow’ as Reno Sweeney in the 2022 UK tour and subsequent Barbican residency of Kathleen Marshall’s sensational revival of Anything Goes , Ellis has previously made a name for herself in acclaimed London and Broadway productions such as Wicked , Les Misérables and Cats .

The new album, ‘Kings & Queens’, due for release on Westway Music on 12 May, builds on Ellis’s past form of fusing her signature Musical Theatre style with contemporary country and rock.

kerry ellis

Her fruitful relationship with Queen guitarist Brian May, who produced Ellis’s debut album ‘Anthems’ in 2010, is further cemented here – not least in the title of the album, which pays tribute both to May and to the impending coronation of Charles III. May also plays guitar on the ballad ‘Battlefield’, written for Ellis by UK-based songwriter Charlie Turner.

Other original songs on the 12-track album include ‘Mean The World To Me’, written by Ellis and British singer-songwriter Ben Adams, and ‘I Will Find You’ by another UK-based singer-songwriter, Jamie Lawson.

There are also a number of cover tracks, including James Taylor’s ‘Fire & Rain’, Tina Turner’s ‘Be Tender With Me Baby’, and Carrie Underwood’s ‘Love Wins’ – all given a new spin by Ellis and her producer Mike Stevens, known for his work with Annie Lennox, ELO, James Morrison and Take That, and whom Ellis credits with edging her ‘into a new direction’.

The ‘Kings & Queens’ tour starts at The Lowry, Salford, on 14 May; it visits Birmingham’s Town Hall on 15 May, and concludes at London’s Adelphi on 16 May.

As Ellis told Musicals magazine, she is eager to get started: ‘I am beyond excited for everyone to hear “Kings & Queens”. I’m so proud of this album and all the new songs; it is the perfect-sounding summer record for you to play in your car, on the move or hanging around at home. I love every track and can’t wait to play them all live on our launch tour. Get ready!’

Kings & Queens is available to preorder at westwaymusic.com ; tour tickets are available from See Tickets , Ticketmaster and at each of the three venues

Kerry Ellis Announces Brand New Album & UK Tour – Kings & Queens

Kerry Ellis has announced the release of her 4 th  studio album,  Kings & Queens , out on Westway Music on 12 May 2023. The album can be pre-ordered now  here.   Kerry will also embark on a UK tour this Spring, with shows in Salford, Birmingham and London, presented by Case Live. Tickets on sale on Friday via  See Tickets ,  Ticketmaster  and venue box offices.

Comprised of 12 tracks, including mainly original songs, along with a handful of hand-picked covers,  Kings & Queens  is the album on which Kerry truly finds her voice, fusing her signature musical theatre style with the contemporary country rock theme with which she has become synonymous.

Recorded in LA and London, and produced by the award-winning Mike Stevens (Annie Lennox, ELO, James Morrison, Take That), the album sees Kerry collaborate with some of music’s biggest names, including esteemed singer-songwriters Newton Faulkner and Jamie Lawson, as well as legendary Queen guitarist and personal friend Sir Brian May.

Opening the album is title track  Kings & Queens , a rousing anthemic rock track, combining Kerry’s powerful vocals with a striking melody. Both a tribute to the impending coronation of Charles III and her friendship with Sir Brian May, the song highlights Kerry’s impressive range and formidable vocal ability, cementing her status as a genre-bending and innovative entertainer.

Written by renowned songwriter Charlie Turner especially for Kerry,  Battlefield  is a heart-rending ballad, evoking a poignant message about the world we live in today. Featuring Sir Brian May on guitar, the song is the latest in a long string of collaborations between Kerry and Brian, with May producing her debut album  Anthems  in 2010. The pair went onto release a further two albums together, and have performed live as a duo in a number of high profile concerts.

Mean The World To Me  was written by Kerry along with icon of British pop Ben Adams, and was inspired by the musical A Star Is Born. A duet with global hitmaker Newton Faulkner, his vocals blend with Kerry’s in perfect harmony, providing the track with elements of Americana while retaining the contemporary theme of the record.

Further original songs include  I Will Find You , written by Jamie Lawson; lively country-americana numbers  Big Wide World  and  Lemonade;  as well as emotion-charged tracks  The Only One ,  My All  and  Home Again .

Kings & Queens  also includes a selection of stunning cover tracks, including  Fire & Rain  by James Taylor ,  and seldom re-recorded Tina Turner track  Be Tender With Me Baby , both of which Kerry has reinvented in her own distinct style. Continuing the American Country theme of the album, the record also features reimagined version of Carrie Underwood’s  Love Wins , adding a flare of positivity and light to the album.

Kerry said,  “I have loved  every second of creating this new album. Working with Mike Stevens was a dream, he edged me into a new direction which I’ve thoroughly enjoyed. Each song has its own special identity and quality. The Westway team have been brilliant and so supportive  and I can’t wait to perform these songs live and for everyone to hear this album – I am incredibly proud of it!”

This Spring, Kerry will perform these tracks live for the very first time. Playing at the Salford The Lowry, Birmingham Town Hall and the stunning London Adelphi on 14, 15 and 16 May respectively, tickets are on sale from Friday 10 February.

Kings & Queens  follows three previously released solo albums from Kerry. Her debut album,  Anthems , was released to great critical acclaim in 2010, landing in the top 15 of the UK official albums chart. Anthems was followed by 2014’s self-titled record  Kerry Ellis , and 2020’s  Feels Like Home . Further studio albums released by Ellis include 2017’s  Golden Days , a collaborative album with Sir Brian May released on Sony Music.

Kerry was catapulted to fame in 2002 when she landed the role of Meat in the original London cast of We Will Rock You. She has gone onto star in a range of acclaimed productions on both Westend and Broadway, including Les Misérables, Wicked, Oliver! And Cats. Most recently, Kerry starred as Reno Sweeney in the UK and Ireland tour and Barbican Theatre residency of hit musical Anything Goes alongside Denis Lawson.

Kings & Queens  is out on 12 May 2023, and available to pre-order  HERE . Tickets for Kerry’s UK tour are available from Friday via  See Tickets ,  Ticketmaster  and venue box offices.

Kerry has gone on to star in a range of acclaimed productions on both West End and Broadway, including Les Misérables, Wicked, Oliver! and Cats. Most recently, Kerry starred as Reno Sweeney in the UK and Ireland tour and Barbican Theatre residency of the hit musical, Anything Goes, alongside Denis Lawson.

"My band is not a solo project. My band is the band I intend to play with until the end of time.” Kerry King admits that yes, he will be playing Slayer songs this summer, but only select cuts

Curious about the setlist Kerry King's new band will be playing this summer? The thrash metal legend sheds some light

Kerry King

There's just over a week to go until Kerry King's new project release their debut album From Hell I Rise and prep for a summer run of shows across Europe and the UK before returning to the US for a mamoth tour with Lamb Of God and Mastodon . But before all that , King's band are set to make their live debut this week with an incredibly intimate show at Reggie's Rock Club in Chicago on May 7, ahead of an appearance at Welcome To Rockville on Thursday (May 9).

Naturally there's plenty of curiosity around what a Kerry King solo setlist will look like. Thankfully, the thrash metal legend has put some fans' concerns to rest, clarifying that yes, he will be playing Slayer songs - albeit choice cuts. Speaking at a Q&A event in Germany, King explained exactly how his setlists are likely to look this summer.

"For this coming summer in Europe we’re gonna do like nine or 10 tracks from the album and depending on set length fill it with stuff I’ve done - something I wrote in Slayer or co-wrote." he explained. " So nobody can say ‘he’s playing Jeff [Hanneman] songs!’ because although I love Jeff songs and he was such a big part of my life, I don’t want to rely on it this year, this album cycle. At some point, I will play Angel Of Death but there’s so many fucking faceless haters on the internet I don’t want to give them ammunition.”

Of course, that opens the grounds for plenty of Slayer classics to still make the set, including some rare songs that could make a comeback . But King's solo band has more of a pedigree than just Slayer with the likes of Phil Demmel (ex-Machine Head, Vio-Lence) and Mark Osegueda (Death Angel) in their ranks so the question was asked if any of their songs might also make the final cut.

“We’ve spoken about covers," King mused. "But we probably won’t be doing them in June and July, but the format for covers in my band is music from bands that don’t exist anymore. Say for instance, Ace Of Spades . I want to cover bands that don’t play those songs anymore – like Iron Maiden don’t play the first two albums. Stuff like that which is meaningful and my band can go out and kick the shit out of it."

In this month's Metal Hammer cover feature , King shared exactly what his new band means to him, and that this year's surprise Slayer reunion isn't "going to translate into recording and it's not going to translate into touring."

"For me, it's three shows marking five years since our final shows, a fun, 'Hey, remember us from before the pandemic?' celebration," he explained.

At the Q&A, King also elaborated that although his new band bear his name, he very much sees it as a band. "Although the band is called Kerry King let me be clear – my band is not a solo project," he stated resolutely. "My band is the band I intend to play with until the end of time.”

CBS SF talks to Slayer guitarist Kerry King about his new band's debut album, upcoming tour

By Eddie Jorgensen

May 9, 2024 / 7:21 AM PDT / CBS San Francisco

For the uninitiated, Slayer's co-founding guitarist Kerry King has been at the forefront of thrash metal for almost four decades. With a style that encapsulates the finer moments of thrash, punk and metal, King's songs have been the soundtrack to many head-banging youths with such song staples as "Mandatory Suicide," "Hell Awaits," and "Raining Blood."

As the debut his new band's latest single "Idle Hands" proved, longtime Slayer fans didn't have to worry if the guitarist softened since Slayer's farewell tour back in November 2019. Said Kerry -- who ceremoniously left his trademark chains behind as he walked offstage at the last Slayer gig -- "I knew early on that I wasn't done, and I had no intention of not continuing to play."

Kerry King

With principle tracks recorded at Henson Studios in Los Angeles over the course of only two weeks, From Hell I Rise  was finished shortly thereafter. Featuring 13 blistering tracks including standouts "Crucifixation," "Toxic," "Residue," and the highly infectious "Tension," there isn't a dud to be found. And with song structures and topics that could only come from Slayer's axeman, this soundtrack to the apocalypse -- available on all formats on May 17th Reigning Phoenix Music -- is sure to incite riotous behavior and circle pits wherever the band performs.

Much more than a side project, Kerry King -- both the band and the man -- are on a mission and putting the group at the forefront of all conversations. While Slayer may have announced reunion appearances at a trio of festivals in the fall (including one at Aftershock 2024 in Sacramento ), King and his new band will be on the road as much as humanly possible. Started well before the pandemic, King has been a writing machine and, perhaps, even more prolific than during his full-time Slayer tenure.

And while there is much chatter going on about Slayer returning this year, From Hell I Rise  showcases one helluva line-up and is much more than a distraction from current events. Featuring some of Bay Area's best including longtime Slayer drummer Paul Bostaph (who also once played in Forbidden), guitarist Phil Demmel (formerly with Vio-Lence and Machine Head, who is also a member of the recently unveiled supergroup Category 7 featuring Armored Saint and former Anthrax frontman John Bush), and Death Angel vocalist Mark Osegueda along with bassist Kyle Sanders (Hellyeah), there is more than enough firepower to appease even the most devout Slayer fan.

As luck would have it, the band will be supporting Lamb Of God and Mastodon on a stateside trek dubbed the "Ashes of Leviathan Tour" that sees them crisscrossing the U.S. starting July 19th in Grand Prairie, TX and then ultimately ending in La Vista, Nebraska at the close of August.

CBS SF:  Just finally listened to the new album as a whole and it's a great listen from top to bottom. How long have these songs been ruminating? Were any of these riffs meant for Slayer originally?

Kerry King: There are two complete songs on this album that were left over from 'Repentless' and they were even done lyrically then, but I wasn't thrilled with how they turned out. I put them back in my pocket until the next Slayer record, but there never was a next record, so that became part of my new record.  Some of these riffs, like the main body of 'Residue,' is probably over 20 years old. I could never find the parts to finish it. This time I was able to. It's one of those songs that I always knew I wanted to use, but didn't want to put it out prematurely. There's tons of stuff I wrote since Slayer was done. There's also tons of stuff I wrote since 'From Hell I Arise' was done, so record number two is shaping up nicely as well.

CBS SF:  Your band features a veritable who's who of the Bay Area metal scene. Why that area in particular?

Kerry King: I didn't think of it like that, but that's just how it panned out. I've known these guys -- especially, everybody from the Bay Area -- for decades.  All of them except Mark [Osegueda] needed work. Certainly Paul and I were out of work. Phil Demmel was also out of work, but he put his name in the hat very early and worked with us doing demos off and on. Every five or six weeks, he'd come down to play and we'd sound better.

Using the demos we had, Phil would send new ideas whenever had new material. Phil's an incredible player and Mark's one of the best singers in thrash metal, without question. The pulse of thrash definitely comes from there. We were a little displaced because we were in Southern California, but at the end of the day, so was Metallica.

I met Kyle in 2015 on the Mayhem Tour and we became friends very quickly. I knew that if I ever wanted a bassist, that's who I'd be calling. He's my East Coast connection. Paul's been working with me on and off since the early 90's, so the talent and the friendship is there. I'm happy I could help the guys out when they didn't have work. Right now, I get to go forward and show everybody what we got.

CBS SF: A full U.S. tour is already on the books. Do you plan to stay as busy with the KKB in 2025?

Kerry King: Absolutely. I would like to get something filled up between October and December 2024, but if the promoters think that's too early, then it will be soon after the New Year as business picks up again. Five weeks in Europe is very short for any kind of tour, be it festivals, or whatever. We want to go back and do a proper headline tour over there. We'll probably come to the States and do a proper headline tour or shift gears and put our other record out. We will be busy for sure.

CBS SF:  Do you prefer festivals over headlining dates?

Kerry King: That's difficult. I like both. If I had my choice, I would probably say a headlining date.  When you're doing festivals, you're just a pawn in a sea of bands that are there to entertain a mass of people, so there's too many cooks in the kitchen, so to speak.

CBS SF:  Any songs that didn't make the record?

Kerry King: Absolutely.  Within three months of Paul and I getting together, we had so many songs.  I said, "Hey dude, let's shift gears and finish the ones I've already got lyrics or titles for, or just songs making this record, so we aren't spinning our wheels and getting burned out." Before we called those songs, we made demos of them however far along they were at that point, and those are ones I'm going to readdress when I start working on stuff again. Actually, when I finally go on tour, during days off I'm going to really try to finish lyrics and stuff. When I come home and when the tour cycle is over, we can go right back in the studio and get more music out.

CBS SF:  Why no Bay Area show scheduled so far? Seems like your biggest market aside from Los Angeles and New York.

Kerry King: I'll bet that Lamb of God has played the Bay Area recently. There's no New York City show either, so I'm assuming Lamb of God had shows there awhile ago as well. We're playing the sheds in some B & C markets, but when we come back we'll be hitting the other places.

CBS SF:  What are your earliest memories of touring alongside Mark Osegueda previous to joining the band? What about Phil Demmel?

Kerry King: My earliest memories are all gone, because that was probably 40 years ago. I've known Mark since he was a teenager singing in Death Angel. I remember them opening for us because Mark always reminds me he did when he was not even 18 years old and still a kid. Beyond that, Death Angel did an opening run for us in around 2016 or 2017. Before that, it was basically different circles.

As far as Phil goes, I knew Phil in Vio-Lence, but really I don't remember that period either. We'd already toured with Machine Head lots and unless we were playing the same festivals and we turned up at the same place, I would never see him. However, every time if I was off and he came through or he was off and I came through, we'd hang to talk music and stuff.

CBS SF:  Have you worked with anyone else outside of your band that has music recorded for possible release someday?

Kerry King: No. This isn't a solo project. Kerry King [the band] happens to have my name on it. This is my band and will be until we decide no longer to be one. Hopefully, that's when we're all done and want to hang it up to go sit on our porch and watch a bucket of grass grow. These are my guys now, so get used to them.
