Here's all you need to know about the 2022 KPMG Women's PGA Championship taking place at Congressional Country Club

It's time for the third women's Major of the season which comes just days after Matthew Fitzpatrick put on a masterclass to win his first Major at the 122nd U.S. Open .

Here's all you need to know, plus a few ones to watch at the 2022 KPMG Women's PGA Championship.

2022 KPMG Women's PGA Fast Facts

  • Host:  Congressional Country Club is hosting the KPMG Women's PGA Championship for the first time. However, this isn't the first Major it has hosted. Three U.S. Opens (1964, 1997 and 2011) have been played on the Blue Course, as well as one PGA Championship (1976). Congressional is also set to host the KPMG Women's PGA for a second time in 2027.
  • Past winners at Congressional : Although no women have won Majors on this course before, the winner this week will be following in the footsteps of Rory McIlroy (2011 U.S. Open) and Ernie Els (1997 U.S. Open).
  • Set-up:  Blue Course at Congressional will be set to 6,894 yards and will play to a par 72. The yardage for each round of the championship may vary due to course setup and conditions.

Congressional Course set up

  • Field:  156 golfers, from 27 countries, 72 holes of stroke play will be cut after 36 holes to the low 70 scorers (and ties). In the event of a tie for first place after 72 holes, there will be a hole-by-hole play-off, beginning on 18. If a tie still remains, the play-off will advance to 17 and 18 until a winner is determined.
  • Purse:  The purse has doubled for 2022 , reaching a total of $9 million, with the winner's cheque also doubling to $1.35 million.
  • Champion:  The champion will get their hands on the KPMG Women's PGA Championship trophy and an exemption from qualifying for the next five ANA Inspirations, AIG Women's Opens, U.S. Women's Opens and Evian Championships.
  • Current champion: After a hard-fought battle on the final day between Nelly Korda and Lizette Salas, it was Korda who came out on top with a three-shot win to take home her first Major trophy .

About Congressional Country Club

Congressional opened in May 1924 to provide members of the U.S. Congress with a place where they could meet socially. Located in Bethesda, Maryland the club is located just 12 miles northwest of the U.S. Capitol Building. The course was originally designed by Devereux Emmet, but since its opening, the course has more than once undergone extensive changes.

The course has changed a lot since then and after a 20-month redesign by golf course architect Andrew Green, is largely unrecognisable to the test that past Major champions like McIlroy have faced.

Through Green’s redesign, an extensive number of trees were removed, fairways were widened, greens were rebuilt, and nearly 50 acres of natural areas added throughout. In opening up the layout, wind has become more a factor and made the clubhouse visible from nearly every point of the golf course.

Player stories of the week

Danielle kang.

Danielle Kang the 2017 KPMG Women's PGA Champion is a noticeable absentee this week. The 29-year-old revealed at the U.S. Women's Open earlier this month that she had been diagnosed with a tumour on her spine. Not much is know but at the time she said:

"I've gone through a lot of procedures so far, and with the process of elimination we are narrowing it down. It's going to take time."

<3 pic.twitter.com/ScxWrIFVmp — Danielle Kang (@daniellekang) June 7, 2022

Kang did make the cut at the U.S. Women's Open and finished in a tie for 63rd. We wish Danielle well and hope to see her back on a golf course soon.

Nelly Korda

In March, Nelly Korda announced on Instagram that she would be taking a break from golf due to a blood clot in her arm. After surgery and recuperation, Korda made her come back at the U.S. Women's Open, where she finished 8th.

The 23-year-old followed that with a second-place finish last week, where she narrowly missed out on defending her Meijer LPGA Classic title when she lost in three-way play-off with Leona Maguire and eventual winner Jennifer Kupcho.

We speculated what the health scare and time away from competitive golf would do to the world number two's game, but so far it doesn't seem to have impacted it at all. Definitely one to watch this week.

Jennifer Kupcho

Jennifer Kupcho win Chevron 1

The 2022 Chevron Champion comes into this week after winning a play-off against Nelly Korda and Leona Maguire. Since her first Major and LPGA win at the beginning of April, Kupcho has had 4 Top-20 finishes to add to her win from last week. With only a 40th place in U.S. Women's Open, she'll be looking to bring back some Major form to this third Major of the year.

Minjee Lee 2022 U.S. Women's Open Champion

It's not only Major champions who can win again on the biggest stage but as it is only three weeks since the U.S. Women's Open, we have to mention Minjee Lee. Lee walked away with the biggest first prize in women's golf when she put on a dominant final round to win by four shots at Pine Needles Golf and Lodge Club. We're sure she'll be in the mix at the top of the leaderboard this week.

Others to watch

England's Bronte Law is returning to America after winning the Aramco Team Series individual event after holing a monster eagle putt at the last. She beat Georgia Hall by one shot. Both will be looking to build on their performances from last week.

Just because Jin Young Ko hasn't won a tournament since March, it does not mean that you can discount the world number one. When she is on form, she is difficult to beat. She has two top-10 and two top-20 finishes in her last four starts which includes finishing fourth at the U.S. Women's Open.

2022 KPMG Women's PGA Championship: In Gee Chun takes third major championship over fading Lexi Thompson

Chun became just the third korean woman with three or more major championships.

KPMG Women's PGA Championship - Final Round

You don't shoot 75-75 on the weekend of a major championship very often and still hold a trophy at the end of the week. That's exactly what In Gee Chun did at this week's KPMG Women's PGA Championship, though, as she took the third major of her career by a stroke over Lexi Thompson and Minjee Lee, who was looking for a second consecutive women's major.

Chun shot 64-69 in the first two rounds to race out to 11 under at the halfway point. The crown jewel of that performance was a Thursday 64 that was nearly 12 strokes better than the field average, which was not only the best round at this tournament over the last decade but one of the great rounds in professional golf this century.

Chun led by six at the halfway point, which seemed like an insurmountable number given recent history,  both at women's major championships  as well as this specific tournament and its setup.

Good morning from the @KPMGWomensPGA - In Gee Chun leads by 6, the largest 36-hole lead in any women's major over the last 20 years. Each of the last 6 winners of this championship led or co-led through 2 rounds. Can anyone catch her? — Justin Ray (@JustinRayGolf) June 25, 2022

Then the weekend unfurled, and Chun started slipping. She still led by three, though, as the final round started. She was grouped with Lexi Thompson and H.J. Choi in the final round of the week at a revamped Congressional Country Club, where the last major champion was Rory McIlroy in 2011 at the U.S. Open. For most of the week, this felt like a reboot of that romp.

Chun went out in 40, though, and playing partner Thompson took hold of the tournament. When they walked to the 14th tee box, Thompson led Chun by a pair and at 6 under was clear of the rest of the field as well. That's when Thompson's demons disclosed themselves. She bogeyed three of her last five holes with a handful of strokes that looked like they were manufactured under the duress of an earthquake.

Lexi bitten by a short one pic.twitter.com/lJCXNPj9z9 — CJ Fogler AKA Perc70 #BlackLivesMatter (@cjzero) June 26, 2022

Thompson made two horrific stabs at putts from short distance and made bogey at the par-5 16th. She was greenside in two, but hit a panicked-looking chip over the green and motored a putt 15 feet past the hole coming back the other way to give herself 15 feet for par.

It was, exceedingly on every hole, quite difficult to watch.

It was also reminiscent of last year's Women's U.S. Open at Olympic where Thompson warred against so many of the same opponents. It has been, in some ways, the story of her career. A tee-to-green mega talent that sometimes has trouble getting out of her own way. She doesn't have a win in the last three years, and her lone major remains the 2014 Chevron Championship.

Lexi Thompson has 11 top-5 finishes in majors since her lone major victory in 2014. Four of those finishes were runner ups and another she missed a playoff by one shot — The Fried Egg (@the_fried_egg) June 26, 2022

Chun was facing her own drought coming into the week. Her last victory on the LPGA was in October 2018, and she hadn't won a major championship since 2016. She managed a steady closing kick, though, and finished with five consecutive 4s -- including a wild two-putt at the 72nd hole -- to finish at 5 under, beating Thompson and Lee by one each.

That two-putt touched off her 75-75 final two rounds, astounding when you also consider that she finished well under par and also won wire to wire. It really is all about timing in golf and at majors. As one follower pointed out on Twitter, shooting 75-75 over the first two days would have meant missing the cut by three strokes.

"It just means a lot because I didn't have any wins the last three and a half years," Chun said on NBC as she wept after her victory. "I really appreciate my sponsors ... they always believed in me, I really appreciate it. My family and my coach ... and my caddie ... they never gave up on me no matter how I did. Thank you."

Only 29 women, including Chun, have ever won three or more major championships, and only six women from outside the United States (including just two Koreans) have won more than Chun has now with three. At just 27, those numbers could change dramatically for Chun in the years to come. But it's almost certain that after lighting the world on fire through the first 18 and 36 holes at the KPMG Women's PGA Championship and puttering to the finish line with a pair of 75s, no major victory (or any win at all) in her future will look quite like this one did.

KPMG Women’s PGA Championship provides one last qualifying opportunity for Paris

Olympic Golf

Change Text Size

One of the last Olympic qualifying events for the 2024 women’s golf competition at Le Golf National takes place this week at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship at Sahalee Country Club in Sammamish, Wash.

The final 60 qualifiers will be determined on Monday, following the conclusion of the third major championship of the LPGA Tour season. With one last chance to earn a spot in the field in Paris, many players in this week’s field will be working to capitalize on this final shot at Olympic qualification.

In the top 15, the United States remains the only country with more than two representatives, as Nelly Korda, Lilia Vu and Rose Zhang lead the way for the Americans. Australia, the People’s Republic of China and the Republic of Korea each have two players in the top 15. China's group of athletes includes this week’s defending champion, Ruoning Yin, who will be making her Olympic debut in Paris.

New Zealand’s Lydia Ko currently sits at 15th in both the Olympic Golf Ranking and the Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings with 2023 CPKC Women’s Open winner Megan Khang nipping at her heels. Khang is 16th in the world ranking and trying to become the fourth American qualifier for the 2024 Games, something she would be likely to accomplish with a victory in Washington.

Two of the tighter races for qualification involve Japan and Sweden. While Yuka Saso claimed her place at Le Golf National with her victory at the U.S. Women’s Open presented by Ally, Ayaka Furue and Nasa Hataoka are duking it out for the second qualifying spot for Japan. The pair are separated by one position in the Rolex Rankings, and a good finish for either player would qualify them to compete in Paris, something that Furue has yet to do in her young career and that Hataoka has only done once, teeing it up in her first Games in Tokyo in 2021.

Maja Stark and Linn Grant are currently qualified for the Swedish team, with Stark sitting at 16th in the Olympic Golf Ranking and 17th in the Rolex Rankings and Grant at 19th in the OGR and ranked 27th in the world. Stark is seemingly all but locked in to make her Olympic debut in just under two months’ time, but Madelene Sagstrom is working to chase down Grant. Sagstrom is 11 spots behind in the Rolex Rankings.

It would take a monumental effort from Sagstrom to catch up to her younger counterpart, and while a major victory at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship would certainly close that gap, winning at a challenging venue like Sahalee is an incredibly tall order, even for the most seasoned of veterans.

Two other notable players who are currently qualified are Colombia’s Mariajo Uribe and Finland’s Ursula Wikstrom. Uribe is one of a handful of mothers who are ranked in the top 60 of the Olympic Golf Ranking and has announced her intentions to retire after the 2024 Games. Wikstrom would be the oldest player in the field at Le Golf National, as she turns 44 in July.

American Lexi Thompson leads Women's PGA Championship by a shot in her final year on tour

Sport American Lexi Thompson leads Women's PGA Championship by a shot in her final year on tour

A golfer looks over her shoulder and raises a hand to the crowd after holing a putt at a major tournament.

Retiring star Lexi Thompson and world number one Nelly Korda are the players to catch on a star-studded first-round leaderboard at the Women's PGA Championship in Washington.

In-form world number five and 2019 PGA champion Hannah Green is the best-placed Australian, three shots off the pace in pursuit of a second major championship after opening with a 1-under-par 71.

But Thompson, seemingly with the weight of the world off her shoulders after her recent announcement she was stepping away from the game at season's end, and Korda — ominously — look the players to beat.

Joint runner-up in a play-off at last week's LPGA Meijer Classic, Thompson continued her surprising resurgence with a 4-under 68 to claim the outright first-round lead at Sahalee Country Club.

The 29-year-old could see the inevitable question coming after collecting six birdies and briefly hitting 5-under before settling for a one-shot buffer over Korda and Thailand's Patty Tavatanakit.

Would a major title change her plans about retiring from playing full-time on the LPGA Tour?

"I'm just taking it one day at a time. I made my announcement. I'm very content with it," Thompson said after starting with three straight birdies and adding three more on the ninth, 12th and 14th holes.

"Golf is a crazy game, so I'm not going to look too far ahead."

The 2014 Chevron Championship winner claimed the most recent of her 11 LPGA Tour titles in June 2019, while Thursday's 68 was Thompson's lowest round in a major since a 67 at the 2022 Women's PGA at Congressional.

"My approach shots felt great," Thompson said. "They felt really good last week, so just trying to simplify things and get in a rhythm with my swing."

Korda shot 69 in the morning, and Tavatanakit matched it in the afternoon with a bogey-free round.

After missing the cut at her past two events, including the US Open, Korda birdied her final hole to show the form that led the American to a record-tying five straight victories earlier in the year.

She started on the back nine and made four birdies in her first five holes.

A double bogey on the par-4 fourth dropped her back to two under.

"If you try and be aggressive when you've hit it off line, it just bites you in the butt," Korda said.

"Overall I think I played pretty well. I took my chances where I could and I played safe the majority of the round."

Eleven players, including major winners Allisen Corpuz and Frenchwoman Celine Boutier, share fourth at 2-under, with Green in equal 15th spot with defending champion Ruoning Yin of China.

Like Korda, Green started on the back nine and birdied her first two holes to set the early pace.

Three mid-round bogeys seemed to stall her momentum before she picked up a third birdie on her last hole of the round, the par-3 ninth after a lovely tee shot.

Grace Kim, who also featured in last week's play-off loss to world number two Lilia Vu, is the next-best Australian at 1-over.

Minjee Lee, Steph Kyriacou and Gabriela Ruffels all opened with 2-over 74s.

Sarah Kemp and Robyn Choi each shot 75, while Hira Naveed needs a miracle to make the cut after starting with a 10-over 82.
