Wine tour of Lake Garda: Top 10 guide

Doing a wine tour of Lake Garda is a wonderful choice for your holidays!  Think about it: stunning landscapes, ancient history, delicious gastronomy and fabulous wines. Here are 10 tips to a choice of wineries, wines, towns and places to visit!

Apart from knowing that Lake Garda is the largest in Italy , we would not imagine that here one can find a small wine region right by the lake called Lugana, a DOC (Controlled Designation of Origin) located right in the border between Lombardia and the Veneto regions.

Lugana main facts

1.The main grape variety permitted within Lugana is Trebbiano di Lugana or Turbiana  to produce white wines (including late harvested ones) and Sparkling wines using the Traditional method or the Charmat method. Wines must contain 90% Trebbiano di Lugana and only 10% is allocated to other grape varieties.

Trebbiano di Lugana Grapes Wine tour lake garda

A really interesting fact is that  white wines made from Trebbiano di Lugana can age for several years  giving structured, complex and delicious gastronomic wines! For a complete guide about Lugana wines, you can visit the  Consorzio Tutela Lugana DOC website.

With regards to red wines,  wineries in the area produce fragrant, spiced and round wines under an IGP (Protected Geographical Indication) named Benaco Bresciano since Lugana DOC does not allow red grape varieties under its Designation of Origin.

Wineries to visit

2.famiglia olivini.

Our wine tour started at this family-owned cantina producing wines since 1970.  They own 26 hectares of vines: 24 of Trebbiano and 2 of Merlot. The winery produces Lugana wines (whites), reds, Sparkling and Sweet wines. Moreover, they make olive oil and grappa.

At  Famiglia Olivini  grapes are hand-harvested beginning of September.  They produce 250,000 bottles per year and the biggest percentage is made from Lugana wines. Their Sparkling wines are made using the Traditional method and their flagship one matures up to 60 months!

We were welcomed by Simone, a great host who showed us the vineyard, the winery and conducted the wine tasting.  In addition, we were pleasantly surprised by the quality of the wines we tried; definitely worth the visit! (see the next section for more details about the wines)

With Simone from Famiglia Olivini winery

3.Azienda Vinicola La Rifra

Claudio and Luigino have been producing wine since 1970. The two brothers are focused on high-quality and a small production, taking advantage of indigenous grape varieties (Trebbiano di Lugana and Marzemino) as well as of their specific terroir and microclimate. Clay soils rich in minerals and temperatures moderated by Lake Garda are a wonderful setting for producing highly mineral wines with concentrated and original flavours. You won’t be disappointed! Their wines are a real treat and a hidden gem in the Lake Garda region!

Wines you must try and their food pairing!

4.white wines.

Famiglia Olivini Demesse Vecchie Lugana DOC,  made from 40-year-old Trebbiano vines. Ageing on the lees for 12 months and in the bottle for about 6 months before release. Aromatic on the nose showing complexity and notes of vanilla, almonds and pineapple. In the mouth is ample displaying mineral hints and great structure with a lingering finish. Undoubtedly a gastronomic wine that could match wonderfully well fatty fish from the Lake, oysters and red Gambas.

Famiglia Olivini Demesse Vechie

La Rifra Lugana DOC,  100% Trebbiano di Lugana. Despite being a young white wine, it displays a surprising complexity: apricot hints on the nose while highly mineral with notes of saltiness in the mouth –making a very pleasant contrast–. This wine is ideal for the aperitif and a good pairing for starters such as salads, antipasti, but also fresh fish and grilled calamari.

La Rifra Lugana DOC

5.Sparkling wines

Famiglia Olivini Lugana DOC Pas Dosé,  100% Trebbiano. A spectacular Sparkling wine because of its delicacy and elegance, displaying a good nerve –high acidity– but also a creamy texture, fine bubbles and a persistent final taste. A fabulous finding; ageing at least 48 months for a complex and structured wine which could easily match  all sorts of seafood and fine desserts such as French macarons and Tarte Tatin.

Famiglia Olivini Lugana DOC Pas Dosé Sparkling wine

Famiglia Olivini Garda Rosé DOC Brut,  a wonderful coupage of Groppello, Barbera, Sangiovese and Marzemino -4 Italian grape varieties- under the Controlled Designation of Origin Garda. Produced following the Traditional method with at least 24 months on the yeast. Notes of fragrant strawberries and vanilla on the nose with pleasant hints of raspberries in the mouth. Structured, complex with a remarkable body for the perfect choice of a Sparkling Rosé. Fabulous to pair  sushi, Prawn and avocado cocktail, tuna tataki and Strawberries & cream.

Famiglia Olivini Garda Rosé Brut

6.Red wines

La Rifra Palpito 2015, Marzemino 100%, DOP Garda . Concentrated flavours of cherry marmalade and cinnamon on the nose while displaying more spices in the mouth such as white pepper and hints of ripe prunes. A wine to be remembered because of its vibrant character and flavour concentration; very juicy and balanced.  Extraordinary to accompany Duck breast with plum sauce and Spaghetti all’Amatriciana.

La Rifra Palpito Marzemino wine tour lake garda

Notte a San Martino, Famiglia Olivini, Benaco Bresciano IGT, 100% Merlot.  A sumptuous and complex wine; aged 24 months in French oak and 1 year in the bottle before release. 50% of the grapes used to make this wine undergo the “Appassimento” process, a winemaking technique by which grapes are dried in racks inside well-ventilated lodges or chambers. This is the same process used to make Amarone. This explains the concentration of flavours and the intensity of a wine made from 100% Merlot. One could expect a lighter wine but instead this cru is all about chocolate and balsamic notes displaying well-integrated and round tannins for a silky and delightful wine.  Ideal to match porcini-based dishes, game meat and dark chocolate.

Notte a San Martino Famiglia Olivini

Il Nito, La Rifra, Benaco Bresciano IGT, coupage of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Marzemino.  Part of the grapes undergo the “appassimento” for 2 months; it ages 2 years in French barrels and 6 months in the bottle. Elegant and soft with notes of ripe cassis, violets and vanilla on the nose. In the mouth is round and palatable with a lingering finish.  Perfect to pair grilled red meat and matured cheese .

Il Nito La Rifra winery

7.Sweet wines

Famiglia Olivini, Condolcezza, 100% Trebbiano di Lugana.  A selection of the best grapes is put in racks to dry in rooms for several months in order to concentrate the sugars. This wine shows delicate sweet notes but also great acidity and good body. Notes of patisserie, dried apricots and ripe pineapple with hints of almonds.  Ideal to be enjoyed on its own, with Blue cheese or Roquefort.

Places worth visiting during your wine tour!

Sunset at Sirmione, Lake Garda

A picturesque and beautiful town located in the south of Lake Garda  in a very narrow Peninsula. Stunning sunsets over the lake, an ancient Castle from the 12 th  Century that you can visit and multiple “gelaterie” offering the largest choice of ice creams! But above all the ruined Roman villa “The Grotte di Catullo”, the most important Roman site in Northern Italy located at the northernmost end of Sirmione Peninsula. Ancient stone-paved streets giving different view perspectives over the lake and splendid landscapes make Sirmione a must-see destination when touring Lake Garda.

9.Borghetto sul Mincio

Borghetto sul Mincio, lake Garda

Perfect for a romantic getaway, you should include Borghetto in your wine tour!  One of the most beautiful Italian towns, Borghetto seems unreal, belonging to the past and only 50 minutes away from Sirmione, South of Lake Garda. Lying on the Mincio river, this tiny village offers melancholic views over the ancient ruins of the Medieval bridge and the castle as well as ancient watermills and stone houses. Perfect for a walk to spend a lovely afternoon!

Verona during Lake Garda wine tour

The city of love according to Shakespeare’s chef d’oeuvre Romeo and Juliet , Verona is a marvellous Italian city offering stunning heritage sites, scenic bridges over the Adige river, lots of history and art. Only 45 minutes away from Lake Garde, Verona offers so much to see! Among the most relevant sites, we could mention the “Arena”, an amphitheatre completed around 30 AD, the Porta Borsari -the façade of a 3 rd  century gate in the original Roman city walls-, the beautiful piazza delle Erbe and impressive churches such as the Basilica of San Zeno Maggiore, Sant’Anastasia and the Duomo. This is a splendid city that you should definitely visit during your wine tour in Lake Garda.

If you are planning a getaway and wish to add a wine tour to it, you can find some wonderful options  here!  and you can also  contact us  for a tailored wine tour!

Lake Garda for wine lovers

  • Wineries to visit

Writers have sung the praises of Lake Garda’s beauty for centuries, including D.H. Lawrence, who shared his encounters in Twilight in Italy: ‘The lake lies dim and milky, the mountains are dark blue at the back, while over them the sky gushes and glistens with light.’

Lake Garda’s charming character is inescapable by its medieval castles, quaint lakeside villages, and crystal blue waters. Surrounded by three regions – Veneto’s rolling hills, Trentino-Alto Adige’s alpine mountains, and the fertile plains of Lombardy – Lake Garda is also the northernmost Mediterranean climate in Europe, where the sun-soaked area is tempered with predictable afternoon breezes.

The landscape is verdant with lemon and olive groves, and vineyards that provide quaffable enjoyment made from grapes that are grown on morainic soils left from the glaciers that carved the lake millions of years ago.

Lake Garda’s wines

The vineyards of Lake Garda offer some of the country’s most classic wines: Bardolino , the area’s famous light red wine, as well as light and refreshing Chiaretto rosatos; Lugana DOC straddles both Lombardy and Veneto on the southern shore of the lake, producing wines made mostly with Turbiana (Trebbiano di Lugana), a biotype of Verdicchio.

The easy-drinking white Custoza is typically blended from nine allowable grapes, among them Garganega, Fernanda (Cortese) and Trebbiano di Toscano. On the western shores, Valtenesi is driven by the indigenous Groppello grape(s).

International varieties such as Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon are also found along the lake region as they have taken fertile residence for centuries.

The sparkling wines of Garda DOC are made using either metodo classico and/or Martinotti methods, offering refreshing and clean bubbles that pair effortlessly with the lake’s conviviality and Mediterranean climate.

Garda wineries to visit

Azienda agricola pratello.

The 1860s farm is run by the Bertola family and is located one kilometre from the lake along the southwestern shores in Padenghe. Pratello primarily produces Lugana, and Valtenesi, Chiaretto di Valtenesi, as well as a metodo classico Garda DOC which spends five years on lees. Pratello is also an agriturismo, where most of the gastronomic experiences, including their extra virgin olive oil, come from the farm and nearby producers. Alpacas, chickens, donkeys and ducks live among the meadows and olive groves. Accommodation is charming and comfortable, with amenities that include dining, swimming, and a natural pond for soaking into deeper bliss.

Azienda Agricola Ricchi

In the scenic landscape of the morainic hills, just south of Lake Garda in Monzambano, family-run Ricchi invites guests to taste a host of wines, ranging from Garda DOC Chardonnay, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, as well as Lugana, international red blends made from partially raisinated grapes, sparkling wines and grappa. Ricchi also produces olive oil made from the hills of the Mantua region.

Azienda Agricola Cavalchina

Cavalchina pioneered the use of the name ‘Custoza’ in the early 1960s for the white wine grown in Custoza. Arrange a tasting visit to Cavalchina’s second story tasting room that overlooks the picturesque vineyards where Garganega, Fernanda and other varieties grow. In addition to Custoza, owners and brothers Luciano and Franco Piona also produce a number of wines from the lake region, including Bardolino, Chiaretto and the sparkling Cuvée Maison, a blend of Chardonnay, Pinot Bianco and Corvina. This metodo classico Garda DOC enjoys 12 months on lees to produce a creamy, dry, herbal spumante with a touch of refreshing salinity.

Costaripa is a family-run winery located in western shores of the lake in Valtenesi owned by winemaker Mattia Vezzola, who is passionate about maximising the potential of indigenous grapes such as Groppello and Marzemino. A visit to the tasting room allows guests to taste award-winning Valtenesi wines, including the wildly popular RosaMara Chiaretto made using the ‘tear drop’ method, as well as Lugana and metodo classico Garda DOC.

Perla del Garda

Owned by the Prandini family, Perla del Garda strives to blend innovation and tradition with an eye on sustainability on the production of their wines coming from 34 hectares just south of Garda Lake, between Desenzano and Sirmione. They produce metodo classico Garda DOC made of Chardonnay and also the Millesimato Extra Brut, which is kept on the lees for at least 60 months. Tasting tours highlight Lugana wines, and include walks through vineyards to vertical tastings to appreciate the ageing capacity of this wine.

Originally a farm specialising in producing vine cuttings, the Zenato family now also operates over 30 hectares in the Lugana DOC production area in the quaint town of Peschiera del Garda. Tended by third-generation brothers Fabio and Paolo, they are passionate about their territory, always ensuring to protect the environment. Along with Lugana wines, Le Morette produces Bardolino, Chiaretto, sparkling wines, as well as passito, grappa, olive oil and honey.

What is Amarone?

20120923-180941.jpg

Valpolicella DOC and Ripasso

Moslty made with the corvina grapes, Valpolicella DOC are the signature wines of the area. Less structured than the other wines, it is the perfect accompaniment for every day dishes such as pasta. Its freshness and light body will please many wine drinker for its simplicity and frankness. In the case of Ripasso the fermenting grape must is poured over the skins of the Amarone. This step gives more colour and structure to the wine, and it is a perfect match for meats, aged cheeses and salami.

Recioto is a sweeter wine and it is perfect with desserts and it is obtained from the same process of Amaronek, however the fermentation is stopped to have a lower content of alcohol and therefore more sugars in the wine.

If you’ve never tried tasting wine in a professional environment, such as the winery where the product is developed and bottled, the Amarone wine is a fascinating starting point and you will have the chance to sample different kinds of Amarone that are obtained from a variety of grapes (and dry grapes, which give it a sort of raisin-type flavor) and with specific methods (such as a different fermentation or mixing different grape musts) that make for a unique experience. You will find many Amarone wineries around Verona and in the surrounding region of the Valpolicella, and here are some of the establishments that have a proud and long history of Amarone production.

Cantine Bertani Wine Tour.

The traditional techniques employed for the production of the Amarone here at the Cantine Bertani date back to 1857 and the wine is obtained from locally sourced grapes, cultivated in the winery’s 200 hectares of vineyards located at the heart of the Valpolicella region. The winery is near Verona, so it’s very easy to hop by to enjoy a tour of the grounds and wine tasting experiences that will accompany you through the history of the Bertani, their knowledge and the wide selection of different types of Amarone. If you want to grab a bottle as a souvenir, or to enjoy during the rest of your stay in Italy, the winery also has a shop, open Monday to Friday from 9:00 to 12:30 and from 15:00 to 19:00. The shop is open on Saturdays from 10:00 to 17:00.

Cantina Zeni Bardolino Wine Tour.

Located on the Lake of Garda, in the city of Bardolino, near Verona, the Cantina Zeni offers tours for individual tourists or small groups up to 10 people, booking isn’t required but different tasting experiences can be booked beforehand if you’re interested in a more in-depth visit of the winery. Another great activity you can take part to while at the Cantina Zeni is a visit to their Wine Museum: you will get a closer look to each step of wine production, from the vineyard to the bottle, and you’ll learn about the tools of the trade. On the winery’s website you’ll find contact information and more info on booking, opening times and the Cantina’s shop http://www.zeni.it/en/contacts/.

Cà dei Frati Winery Tour.

The area surrounding the Lake of Garda is filled with many wineries , one of them being Cà dei Frati , located in Lugana di Sirmione. Open from Monday to Saturday, from 8:30 to 12:30 and from 14:30 to 18:30, the winery offers tours, tastings and a shop where you can purchase their products such as the Amarone, other wines produced by them (red and white) and grappe, one of them made with an Amarone base. The Cà dei Frati winery follows a family tradition that focuses its attention on carefully growing and harvesting the individual strains of grape, in order to achieve wines of the highest quality - from the raw ingredients to the finished product. The winery also has affiliated establishments where one can enjoy food and wine through tastings and culinary events, at hotels and restaurants along the Lake of Garda.

Villa Monteleone Valpolicella Amarone Tour.

Not far from Verona, this winery can also be counted among the producers of top-quality Amarone. The region of Valpolicella, where the Villa Monteleone winery is located along with others, is recognized as the official territory of production for the Amarone, starting from the grapes that are harvested here. This winery differs from others because of the adjoined Bed & Breakfast that will welcome guests from all over the world, who have arrived to sample the local wines and dishes, all prepared with locally sourced ingredients and following traditional, regional recipes. The winery offers wine and culinary tours, for a complete journey into the dining habits of the locals of this region.

VILLA CALICANTUS

Bardolino wine for passion.

lake garda vineyard tour

Villa Calicantus

Villa Calicantus is a small biodynamic winery in Calmasino, in the heart of Bardolino Classico, just a stone’s throw from the southeastern shore of Lake Garda. We are Chiara and Daniele Delaini: we work 8 hectares of vineyards and produce between 30,000 and 40,000 bottles annually, depending on the climatic conditions of the vintage. Our vineyards are located on three of the best hills of Bardolino, where, not far from Lake Garda, we cultivate the native Verona grapes, Corvina, Rondinella, and Molinara, to produce 5 wines that aim to be 5 authentic and unique expressions of these grapes and their terroir.

Degustazioni di vino a Bardolino Lago di Garda Villa Calicantus

Our viticulture is of high quality: all our hard work in the vineyard is focused on the well-being and balance of the vines, to obtain grapes capable of producing long-lasting and complex wines. Respect for the vine and the soil, uncompromising work in the vineyard, and long aging in the cellar allow us to produce unique wines that tell the story of the territory, the grape varieties, and the vintage from which they come. Our goal is to put Bardolino back on the map of great Italian wines, through a rediscovery of the true, forgotten identity of a wine with immense potential.

A Visit To Italy’s Garda DOC (Lake Garda Wine Region)

Learn about Italy's beautiful Garda DOC wine region and what the organization is doing to consolidate Sparkling Wines here under a new designation. Plus, learn a little bit about visiting a few special wineries and tasting rooms in this boutique Italian wine region.

There’s nothing more charming than a glass of well-made Italian bubbles and a warm summer afternoon. In a market dominated by Prosecco from the Veneto region , the Garda DOC (Denominazione di Origine Controllata) aims to find a recognizable place in Italy’s expanding sparkling wine market. Recently, I had the pleasure of visiting the area, and I can see why it’s no surprise Wine Enthusiast Magazine would name this region as part of the top 10 wine regions of 2019.

The Lake Garda Wine Region

The Lake Garda area is one of the Northernmost Mediterranean climates in Italy. Cypress, olive, cherry and lemon trees dot the area, but above all vineyards dominate the landscape. As I observed my surroundings, the topography itself is mostly flat with gently rolling hills where the best vineyards grow. I felt as if I had stepped back in time. There are still many rustic Mediterranean-style homes and businesses. The medieval towns of Soave and Verona are also part of this DOC.

lake garda vineyard tour

Consolidating The Region’s Sparkling Wines Under One DOC

Established in 1996, the Garda DOC will soon seek to consolidate ten appellations and how Sparkling Wine is labeled: Valentèsi, San Martino Della Battaglia, Lugana, Colli Mantovani, Custoza, Bardolino, Valpolicella, Valdadige, Durello  and Soave . Any Sparkling Wine made within these appellations will be designated Gardadoc (one word). Additionally, mono-varietal still wine such as Chardonnay , Merlot , or Cabernet Sauvignon will be labeled with the grape variety and Garda DOC on the label. However, the notable white wine of Soave will still be called Soave and Amarone will still be recognized as Amarone .

Sparkling Wine Production Practices in Garda DOC

On my first day of the trip, I had the opportunity to meet with Garda DOC president Luciano Piona who explained the association’s mission and the history of the area. Luciano is from the region, and prior to winemaking he led a pretty interesting life. He worked on charter yachts in the Caribbean as a young man and is well educated. After completing that portion of his professional life, he returned home Lago di Garda to make wine. His father couldn’t have been happier. Flash forward to present day times, Luciano has a beautiful vineyard, production facility and tasting area on a private piece of land in Custoza. We tasted 12 different wines together.

Garda DOC president Luciano Piona

Interestingly enough, I learned that Gardadoc wines can be either tank-fermented or done in the classic method (metodo classico). These wines are predominantly made with Garganega and Chardonnay, as well as Corvina. However, other varieties may be permitted. Basically, Spumante is the core type of wine of the DOC and is the common denominator that ties the ten appellations together.

How To Visit the Garda DOC

Lake Garda DOC Sparkling Wines | Winetraveler.com

Discovering Soave – The Rocco Sveva Tasting Room

In the beautiful and historic town of Soave lies the Rocco Sveva Tasting Room which opened its doors in 2003 and hosts over 20,000 visitors per year. Last year the label celebrated its 120th anniversary. This place is an absolute must-visit for all the history buffs out there. Our host Milena provided us with a fantastic tour of not only the grounds, but also their museum. Here, you can find old pictures of winemaking throughout the years, a soil exhibit, a tasting cellar with wines dating back to 1987 and beautiful botanical gardens and experimental vineyards which overlook the Soave Castle. While we were there the primary focus was Garda DOC wines. However, they produce a profound assortment of not only wines, but other types of local foods such as olive oil and dried pasta.

To the east of Lake Garda located at the heart of the medieval village of Pratello, lies a groundbreaking family-run winery called Pratello . The winery is built completely underground, with one newly-built section for fermentation and bottling operations while the other older section is used for wooden cask aging of older vintages.

Pratello offers a wide variety of wines, foods and services on the property. During my visit I sampled food from their kitchen which featured incredibly fragrant oregano grown right on their property. Their Chiaretto Rosé also won best Rosé in a recent French competition. The vineyards and surrounding properties are all family-owned and operated.

Cantina Ricchi

To the south of Lake Garda lies Cantina Ricchi in Monzambo. Ricchi In Italian means ‘rich’ and is the perfect all-encompassing adjective to describe their property: it’s rich in land, history, diversity and hospitality. During the tour we explored the property, and it quickly became apparent that no expense was spared. Only top-of-the-line winemaking equipment is used in their newly renovated cellar.

Relias La Casina

A few miles down the road lies Relias La Casina. This old cascina has been fully renovated and includes 12 rooms for you to stay in along with a full spa experience on the property. There’s even a salt room and an indoor saltwater pool. In the restaurant down below, only local food and wine are served. It’s a beautiful property overlooking vineyards atop rolling hills and a medieval castle in the distance. This is truly an escape fit for the princesses and princes within all of us.

I thoroughly enjoyed my time exploring Lake Garda, Verona and the surrounding area. Put this area on your list and you too can enjoy the Garda DOC Sparkling Wine, right at the source. ????
