Darla Uhl

  • June 29, 2023 December 12, 2023

Last Updated on December 12, 2023 by Darla Uhl

The Lindt Home of Chocolate in Zurich has quickly become one of Switzerland’s most popular tourist destinations, attracting numerous visitors since its opening in September 2020. One of its main attractions is the impressive 9.3-meter-high chocolate fountain, which has become a viral sensation on social media. Visitors also enjoy taking the popular chocolate tour. As a result, the Lindt Chocolate factory has become a must-see for anyone visiting Zurich. If you’re wondering how to get to the Lindt Chocolate Factory in Zurich , keep reading this article.

How to Get from Zurich to Lindt Chocolate Factory

lindt chocolate factory tour zurich switzerland

Getting to the Lindt Home of Chocolate from Zurich is a breeze. My suggestion is to hop on the S8 train at Zurich Train Station and travel to Wollishofen, then catch the connecting bus to Kilchberg ZH, Lindt & Sprüngli. Keep in mind that there are alternative routes and options available as well.

Here are three ways to reach the Lindt Chocolate Factory from Zurich (updated December 2023):

To walk to Lindt Chocolate Factory from the Kilchberg ZH train station, simply head to Bahnhofstrasse, Bungerstrasse, and Pilgerweg as shown below.

If you would like to read more about the Lindt Chocolate Factory , you can check out our article The Lindt Home of Chocolate in Zurich: What to Expect .

Just south of Zurich, the Lindt has a chocolate museum at its Kilchberg factory location, delighting chocolate lovers from near and far. The museum is absolutely gorgeous and super informative, with lots of chocolate to taste during the tour. We fully enjoyed our visit and recommend it to anyone visiting or living in the Zürich area.

By public transport

Ticket prices, opening times, chocolate courses, chocolate tasting, starting the tour, cocoa production, chocolate history & culture, chocolate production processes, chocolate companies, chocolate factory machines.

The Lindt chocolate museum is located in Kilchberg, a suburb south of Zürich. It is easily reached by car or public transportation.

How to get there

Drive to Schokoladenplatz 1, 8802 Kilchberg . There is an underground parking garage, CHF 2/hr.

From Zürich city, take a tram to Bürkliplatz , walk over to the bus stop (the bus doesn’t pick up at the tram stop). Then catch bus 165 to Kilchberg ZH, Lindt & Sprüngli bus stop , which is directly in front of the Lindt Chocolate factory. If you are starting at Zürich main train station, you can take the S8 train to Kilchberg train station , then a 900m walk to the factory.

If you come by public transport, you can get a 10% discount on your entrance ticket if you purchase them together with your train/bus tickets. Learn more .

In 2023, entrance to the museum costs CHF 15/adult, CHF 10/child aged 8-15 , under 7 free. Discount for students, disabled, and pensioners. If you have a Zürich card , you get a 10% discount.

You should purchase tickets online beforehand, selecting a day and time slot. On weekends and holidays, time slots do sell out, so best to purchase tickets a day or two ahead of time. Audio guides are included in the ticket price and do not need to be purchased separately.

You can also book a guided tour from Zürich including a Zürich city tour, lake cruise and Lindt visit.

The chocolate museum is open every day 10:00 to 18:00. Plan for about 1 – 1.5 hour for the tour.

They also offer chocolate courses at this location, which would be nice to schedule after your chocolate tour. A popular choice is making your own chocolate bar . This courses costs CHF 28/per person and last 40 mins. They usually offer special seasonal chocolate courses for holidays like Christmas and Easter that fill up weeks in advance. See all chocolate courses .

Let’s start with what everyone wants to know: how much “free” chocolate can you eat?! When we were there in Oct 2020, there were three places on the tour where you can sample chocolate.

The first one was in the middle of the tour, with the chocolate fountain shown below. There were three fountains, dark, milk and white. There were plastic wrapped disposable spoons that you hold under the dispenser and pull the lever to get a dollop of chocolate. You can eat as much as you like, only limited by your own shame. We had many spoonfuls, super delicious.

lindt chocolate factory tour zurich switzerland

Near the end of the tour, you enter the chocolate tasting room. On the website, they show employees handing out pralines. But when we were there in Oct 2020, they had big bowls of the signature Lindt wrapped truffles, which makes more sense during the pandemic.

But honestly, I was a little disappointed because living in Switzerland, we eat these truffles all the time and even have a huge walls of these truffles at our neighborhood grocery. I was hoping to try something that was a little different than the norm. But ultimately, I can’t argue with unlimited “free” chocolate.

lindt chocolate factory tour zurich switzerland

Since we were on a reconnaissance for you, dear readers, we tried every flavor, then went back and got a few of the flavors we really liked, then went back again for our very favorites and left feeling a little sick. It’s a hard life. The raspberry truffles were the surprising favorite of the day.

At the very end end of the tour, you’ll find this Rube Goldberg machine. You scan your entrance ticket to turn on the machine. A big ball rolls down the machine and spits out a chocolate at the end. When we were there, the machine broke about every 3 customers, so the staff had to keep coming over to fix it. At one point, they just handed chocolate to people so they could fix the machine. Hopefully it’s working better when you go.

Photo story

Now back to the beginning. When you arrive, you’ll enter this big hall with the iconic chocolate whisk. I took this pic at the end of the tour. There is a locker room here if you want to store your stuff. Use the toilets now, I didn’t see any on the tour. But you can exit the tour to use the toilet and come back in.

lindt chocolate factory tour zurich switzerland

Take your selfie with the whisk and then go wait in line at the stairs shown below. We arrived 15 mins before our time slot and there were already a few dozen people in line. It’s a crush of people at first even though they try to space it out, only letting a few people at a time. The first rooms were uncomfortably crowded for my taste. My experience was that people rushed through a bit and if you lingered back, the museum was quieter since the next group doesn’t enter the museum for another hour. I thought next time I might come at the half hour, meaning the people who came on time would all have already moved through the first rooms and the next group wouldn’t start for another 30 mins.

lindt chocolate factory tour zurich switzerland

There’s an elevator for anyone with reduced mobility to reach museum on the upper floor. The whole museum is accessible for wheelchairs and strollers, though some places are a bit narrow when a lot of people are there. Their website indicates that they will provide strollers for you. Perhaps they require you to use their strollers that are narrow enough for the museum. Not sure.

At the top of the stairs, they will scan your ticket and give you an audio guide in your desired language. They have a special audio guide for kids, but we didn’t try that version.

The first section of the museum focuses on the farming and processing of all ingredients for chocolate. It’s well designed and very beautiful.

lindt chocolate factory tour zurich switzerland

Many parts of the museum have an audio guide symbol, so many that you can’t possibly listen to them all unless you stayed there for several hours. I found them quite interesting and wanted to listen to the all. But my son was getting bored and didn’t want to wait for me to listen.

lindt chocolate factory tour zurich switzerland

There are lots of large video displays telling the stories of the cacao production and interviews with the workers. You listen to them on your personal audio guide, which makes it easier to hear with all the bustle around you.

lindt chocolate factory tour zurich switzerland

Next part of the museum focuses on the history of chocolate consumption, with lots of stories I found super interesting. There are a few interactive elements but not really that engaging for the kids, which was a little frustrating. I wanted to spend more time listening and reading but my son was just pulling me into the next room.

lindt chocolate factory tour zurich switzerland

This room talks about the history of chocolate production and machines, particularly in Switzerland, including this special conching machine invented by Lindt.

lindt chocolate factory tour zurich switzerland

Some bits about chocolate marketing and packaging. I loved looking at all the vintage labels.

lindt chocolate factory tour zurich switzerland

Everyone is excited entering this room because they can finally eat some chocolate. There are some faux “machines” explaining how chocolate is made, well done but not as interesting as seeing real machines.

lindt chocolate factory tour zurich switzerland

My son was so happy to finally find two games to play. This one has you reject imperfect chocolate bars from the assembly line.

lindt chocolate factory tour zurich switzerland

In this game, you had to add pralines to the conveyer belt oriented in the correct way. While he played, I went back into the other room to learn more of the history.

lindt chocolate factory tour zurich switzerland

The whole museum is really beautiful and fresh.

lindt chocolate factory tour zurich switzerland

This last room is dark and talks about lots of chocolate companies around the world.

lindt chocolate factory tour zurich switzerland

No surprise how many chocolate companies started in our own little country.

lindt chocolate factory tour zurich switzerland

At the end, you walk by a few “real” factory machines. Sometimes they are running but not when we were there. This is the part I would be most interested in, but most companies don’t want to give away their secrets so you don’t get to see so much of the real production.

lindt chocolate factory tour zurich switzerland

There are educational signboards along this walkway with videos and helpful information. But again my son was dragging me forward and I couldn’t spend as much time here as I would have liked.

lindt chocolate factory tour zurich switzerland

If you didn’t eat enough free chocolate, you can stock up in the gift shop below which has a few products you can’t get easily in other shops. I got some special hot chocolate that gets thick like in Spain.

lindt chocolate factory tour zurich switzerland

The wall of truffles, the same ones you ate on the tour. You fill a bag with your favorite flavors and pay by weight.

lindt chocolate factory tour zurich switzerland

Connected to the museum there is a small cafe with sandwiches, drinks, snacks and chocolate treats.

lindt chocolate factory tour zurich switzerland

I was planning to get hot chocolate but we were already full from eating too many truffles. Maybe next time.

Dear Sir / Madam, I want to visit the Chocolate factory with my family this Friday and I have a question about the tickets. For the visit, we will be 8 people: my wife, my daughter, my son, my parents, 2 nephews and myself. Should I but all tickets as a family? or should buy only as family for my wife, son, daughter and myself, and as individuals for my parents and 2 nephews? Kind regards David Medel

I’m sorry I’m late on this response. I hope you figured this out.

Lindt Home of Chocolate Review (My Recent Visit)

Lindt Home of Chocolate

Lindt’s Home of Chocolate blew me away. Sure, the museum here is amazing, but this stunning modern building is oh so much more!

The Lindt Home of Chocolate is a relatively new project from Lindt, located right next door to the main Lindt chocolate factory in Kilchberg, Zurich. The building houses the Lindt Chocolate Competence Foundation, a group within Lindt that aims to maintain Switzerland’s expertise in chocolate.

Lindt Home of Chocolate

The Foundation has used this stunning white building in many ways.

Pilot production line at the Lindt Home of Chocolate

For example, there is a Chocolate Competence Center for training, a research facility, a Pilot production line for their new ideas and then there are the areas you will love:

  • a huge chocolate museum covering 1500m2
  • the largest Lindt chocolate shop in the world
  • a unique Chocolateria offering chocolate-making courses
  • the first Lindt Café in Switzerland

Yes indeed, Lindt has left no stone unturned in this masterpiece of a building that is all about chocolate lovers. Oh wait, there is one more thing…

Giant chocolate fountain - Lindt Home of Chocolate

Right in the center of the main hall is a 9-meter (28 ft) giant chocolate fountain oozing 1500 liters from Lindt’s signature whisk high above you. It is quite a sight to behold. Just a pity you can’t dip your finger in it. But you do get free chocolate samples on the museum tour. And lots of them. More on that later!

Book Lindt Museum Tickets Ahead

One of the best ways to do that is using the Viator website where you can choose your date and go. You can always cancel if you don’t want to go and you don’t have to pay until the day. How cool is that?

Home Of Chocolate Museum Tour

The Home of Chocolate Museum is a marvel from beginning to end. There is so much to see, read, learn and do. And if you want an audio-guided interactive chocolate tour, you can also grab one as you enter and change the language via the flags on the wall.

Now, it’s time to enter Lindt’s interactive world of chocolate….

Cocoa Beans

You start at the beginning of the chocolate journey, with cocoa beans . Exploring where they come from, how they are processed and the people whose lives are all about cocoa.

Early History of Chocolate

lindt chocolate factory tour zurich switzerland

Next up is some chocolate history. How it came from the new world via the Spanish explorers to Europe and gradually made its way into people’s lives.

The different types of chocolate and hot chocolate and how they changed over time – from a luxury to something available to everyone. You also get to see some fun packaging from the era, many of which are very rare.

Swiss Chocolate Pioneers

lindt chocolate factory tour zurich switzerland

Moving on to Swiss chocolate history, now it is time to learn all about Switzerland’s role in the industry. The different chocolate companies and the techniques and machinery they invented helped bring chocolate to where it is today.

Of course, Lindt features here too, and his invention of the conch, the whisk you always see and how it revolutionized chocolate from a hard, brittle mass to the smooth-flowing bars we know and love today.

Moving on, there is now a really fun display of all the different chocolate packaging from the last hundred years or so. You can really see the evolution of the Swiss chocolate industry, with the changes in bars and wrappers, as well as the merging of various Swiss chocolate companies.

Eat as many Lindt balls as you like!

After you are done here, it’s time to get a selfie inside a Lindor ball and then…eat as many of them as you want! It’s kinda mind-blowing that you can just grab these Lindor balls and eat them to your heart’s content. Just don’t get sick from it all! I certainly did.

If you are still not sick and tired of chocolate there is also a short 20-minute movie on the history of Lindt or another one all about Switzerland. They alternate. Just walk straight past the chocolate fountain to the end of the corridor and you will find the auditorium there.

The World’s Largest Lindt Chocolate Shop

Biggest Lindt Chocolate Shop

I have ever seen every single form of Lindt chocolate all in one place. This is certainly the biggest Lindt chocolate shop in the world. So, get your credit card ready.

Lindor balls - pick and match

Everything from Lindt blocks and Lindor balls to hot chocolate, tasty pralines and everything in between. It’s a great place to get some gifts to take home to your family and friends. You just might have trouble choosing which chocolate to buy!

I managed to get my hands on some flavors here that I have not seen on the shelves in Switzerland. The choice was mindblowing. I think they had every single product that Lindt has and does make. Of course, you can also pop around the back of the factory and visit the Lindt factory outlet store, but there is less choice and honestly, the discounts there are not that great. I think I saved 10% on some blocks.

CHOCOLATERIA: Create Your Own Chocolates

There is also a chocolate-making course you can do here in the Lindt Chocolateria. Lindt Master Chocolatiers will help you assemble your own personal chocolate creation. There are a surprising number of options for chocolate making courses here from Lindt bars, pralines, and Christmas bears to truffles. Just be sure to book your course ahead of time for you Lindt chocolate making class.

The Lindt Cafe in the Home of Chocolate

Once it’s time to put up your feet, you will find the Lindt Cafe right by the entrance on the left-hand side. Treat yourself to a cup of coffee, one of Lindt’s legendary hot chocolates, or a savory snack to keep you going.

7 Great Chocolate Shops in Zurich, Switzerland

C hocolate is synonymous with Switzerland. If you visit Zurich, your friends and family are sure to ask you if you had any chocolate (and they’re likely to expect you to have brought some back). I visited various chocolate shops in Zurich to find the best ones, including everything from budget options to high-end artisanal chocolate shops.

The Best Chocolate in Zurich

Since 1845, Lindt has been one of the most famous names in Swiss chocolate. There are dozens of Lindt chocolate shops all over the world. The international conglomerate also owns the famed San Francisco chocolate brand Ghirardelli and Russell Stover.

The Lindt Home of Chocolate factory & museum is located just a short distance from the Zurich city center in nearby Kilchberg, making it one of the most popular activities in the city. Book Lindt Home of Chocolate tickets & tours here

If you can’t make it out to the Lindt Home of Chocolate, their shop in central Zurich introduces you to a world of chocolate up a waterfall (chocolatefall?) staircase.

The Zurich airport also has a Lindt shop for last-minute shoppers. Or if you forget, there’s a good chance you can buy some Lindt locally & just tell people you bought it in Switzerland . I won’t tell anyone your secret.

Lindt pick-and-mix bags of chocolate are the cheapest option for bringing gifts back home if you’re on a budget or for people who won’t know or care if you’re giving them the absolute best chocolate. But there’s no such thing as bad chocolate (except for Hershey’s).

Address: Bahnhofstrasse 89, 8001 Zürich, Switzerland ( map ) Website

Confiserie Sprüngli

Confiserie Sprüngli is actually related to Lindt, though it has been a separate company since 1892. The original company was founded by David Sprüngli and his son Rudolf Sprüngli-Ammann in 1836. Following the 1892 retirement of Rudolf Sprüngli-Ammann, he split his business between his two sons, with one getting the chocolate factory that would later become Lindt following an acquisition and the other getting two confectionery stores that would become Confiserie Sprüngli.

Confiserie Sprüngli is perhaps the most popular Zurich chocolate shop, boasting several locations with a wide array of chocolates, cakes, and other desserts. There is also an airport location.

The location I visited was the main store & took up a massive ground floor that included a shop and a cafe, both of which were packed with chocolate-happy customers.

The shop has separate counters for each type of item, including Grand Cru chocolates, chocolate slabs, macarons, truffles, pralines, and more.

Address: Bahnhofstrasse 21, 8001 Zürich, Switzerland ( map ) Website

Max Chocolatier

While there are Zurich chocolate makers that are known worldwide & have large factories, there are also a few artisanal chocolate shops in the city that cater to true connoisseurs.

Max Chocolatier is located on a quiet side street in the Lindenhof quarter of Zurich’s Altstadt (old town). Their handmade, handpainted chocolates are all organic, with no palm oil or other additives. The Lucerne-based business was founded by Patrik König & is lovingly named after his son Max.

When I visited the shop, the staff member not only took the time to explain the shop’s ethos but also the various unique flavors they were offering that day, such as the green tea, which had just a fresh hint of the flavor so as not to overpower the exquisite chocolate.

He brought up the good point that with this high-quality chocolate, just a small piece can be satisfying. So, while you might spend more based on weight, quality will win out over quantity. I was able to convince myself that this is also healthier, which is actually true. It’s better to have one piece of high-quality chocolate than several pieces that include low-quality additives.

If you’re seeking the absolute best chocolate in Zurich, head to Max Chocolatier.

Address: Schlüsselgasse 12, 8001 Zürich, Switzerland ( map ) Website

Confiserie Teuscher

Confiserie Teuscher is another well-known chain with multiple chocolate shops in Zurich.

The shop goes all-out for each seasonal holiday. When I visited, Easter was the following weekend, so the shop was filled with easter chocolates and lots of flowers.

Teuscher shops sell various flavored chocolate bars and lots of truffles. Their specialty pieces include champagne or liqueurs.

Dieter Meier Oro de Cacao

The pink marble/stone floored Dieter Meier Oro de Cacao is another specialty chocolate shop in Zurich’s old town. Their products are not cheap, but with fair trade, single-origin chocolates & handmade pieces that take three days to make, it’s easy to understand why.

Individual pieces have inventive flavors. They also use unique patented cold extraction to showcase the unique notes of chocolates from all over the world, such as fruity Peruvian chocolate, berry-like Dominican chocolate, and the nutty, caramelly flavors of chocolate from Ghana.

The shop also sells hot chocolate, which is excellent for cold Zurich days.

Oro De Cacao was founded by Dieter Meier, the frontman for the musical group Yello. While you might not have heard of the band, you’ve certainly heard their most famous song, which is perfect for thinking about delicious chocolate.

Note: As of February 2024, the shop is listed as closed, but the website is still active with products for sale, & their chocolates are also available at Globus Delicatessa & Coop City.

Address: Münsterhof 4, 8001 Zürich, Switzerland ( map ) Website

Founded in 1962, Läderach is a Swiss chocolatier that bridges between traditional chocolates & modern concoctions.

Their Zurich chocolate shops include everything from cheaper pick-and-mix bags with less fancy chocolate & slabs to pralines & Grand Cru selections.

They also have unique creations, such as mini-mousses, that are not to be missed.

If you can’t make it to Zurich, there are over 100 Läderach stores worldwide.

Address: Bahnhofstrasse 106, 8001 Zürich, Switzerland ( map )

Address: Goethestrasse 24, 8001 Zürich, Switzerland ( map ) Website

Vanini Swiss Chocolate

Founded in 1871, Vanini Swiss Chocolate specializes in chocolate-adjacent snacks & desserts. For example, their shop sells gelato, which looks wonderful for a summer day. They also serve crepes & pancakes topped with sweets.

I especially enjoyed the Gemme Mit Kirsch, a cake soaked in cherry liqueur and covered in milk chocolate.

The chocolate shop also serves traditional chocolates & slabs.

Address: Limmatquai 74, 8001 Zürich, Switzerland ( map )

Here are some other  great Zurich tours & activities .

Need a place to stay? Check out these Zurich hotel options . For a luxurious stay, I recommend the Park Hyatt Zurich . Zurich is an expensive city, but it’s easy to get around, so if you’re looking to save some money, you can stay at an airport hotel like the Hyatt Regency Zurich Airport The Circle , as I have also done.
