Lufthansa Unaccompanied Minor Policy Guide [Read This First] (2023)

Are you thinking about sending off an unaccompanied child with Lufthansa?

In that case, you will want to make sure you are extra familiar with the unaccompanied minor policy, also known as the “Lufthansa care service.”

Below, we will break down everything you need to know about the Lufthansa unaccompanied minor policy.

We will discuss the various fees, paperwork, and other rules that you will need to know about and also show you how to book.

Table of Contents

What is the Lufthansa unaccompanied minor policy?

Lufthansa requires unaccompanied children between ages five and 11 to use the Lufthansa care service unless they are traveling with someone who is at least 12 years old. The cost for the service will depend on the route and can range between $95 and $170 USD, per child, per route.

Lufthansa unaccompanied minor fees

The Lufthansa unaccompanied minor fee depends on the length and destination of your flight. Below are the fees broken down by zones and listed in different currencies.

Domestic flights include flights within DE, CH and AT and flights within Africa.

Europe fights include IATA Zone 210 and include flights within and between DE, CH and AT.

North Africa

These include North Africa and the Levant (including LB, IL, EK, JO, IQ, KZ, TM).

MiddleEast, Central Africa and the Arab region

These flights include AE, QA, IR, NG, SA, ET, BH, OM, KW.

Medium-haul intercontinental flights

These flights include US East Coast, CA East Coast, IN, GQ, KE, TZ, AO, MV.

Long-haul intercontinental flights

Long-haul intercontinental flights would include flights to the US West Coast, CA West Coast, South America, JP, CN, KR, TH, SG, ZA, SC.

Each fee is applied per route and per child.

So unlike other airlines that allow you to pay a single fee for a pair of siblings, Lufthansa will require you to pay individual fees every time.

Minimum age.

Any child age between five and 11 can only fly unaccompanied if they are using the Lufthansa care service or traveling with someone who is at least 12 years old.

The requisite accompanying passenger age limit of 12 is on the lower side which is helpful for families that have responsible young children. But keep in mind that some airlines set that age much higher, including at 18 years.

So if you plan on sending a child between five and 11 with a 12-year-old, make sure you truly trust that the 12 year old is responsible enough for the occasion.

The unaccompanied minor service can also be used for unaccompanied children aged 12 through 17.

If your child has never flown before, using the unaccompanied minor service even when they are 12 or older can make them a lot more comfortable and give them a good first experience with air travel.

Connections

Lufthansa only provides the care service for direct flights only and they do not deal with connecting flights.

It’s not uncommon for airlines to not allow connections for unaccompanied minors because of the mess that connections can lead to. So when searching flights, be sure to put a filter on for avoiding connecting flights.

The same baggage fees that would apply to an adult would apply to an unaccompanied minor.

One thing to note is that the child is expected to be able to easily carry the bag without help.

It would be a good idea to do a practice run and have your child carry around his or her luggage to see how they do before you take them to the airport. You may need to reduce the weight if they are struggling to carry it.

Check out the baggage calculator

You may have to deal with your fair share of paperwork when sending an unaccompanied minor with Lufthansa.

The documents and paperwork you may need include:

  • passport or child ID
  • valid visa for the destination country
  • travel insurance certificate
  • information regarding any allergies the child has
  • receipt for prepaid charges if needed
  • declaration of consent from the parents or legal guardians
  • the completed Lufthansa care service form (downloads PDF)

It’s worth noting that all of these documents may not always be necessary. For example, you may only need the following when flying to specific countries:

  • declaration of consent

However, Lufthansa does recommend that you always provide information on any allergies the child may have if applicable.

You can always save time at the airport and allow yourself to arrive earlier if you print out the form and fill it out at home which is what they recommend.

It’s a good idea to make three copies of the form so that you can have one, your child can have one, and the airlines can have one.

At the airport, all of these documents will be placed into a small yellow Lufthansa bag which your child will be expected to keep with them at all times.

If you are checking in at Frankfurt, there are dedicated check-in counters that you can find in departure hall A, counters 41 to 44. And if you are checking in at Munich Airport, counter 417 in the departure hall on Level 4 is where you want to go.

At Frankfurt, you may drop off your unaccompanied minor at the check-in counter but at other airports you may have to accompany the child to the gate yourself.

This will be worked out at check-in and you will be issued a pass to get you through security if needed.

Most airlines in the US say that the parent or guardian needs to remain at the gate until the flight has departed.

But, perhaps because there are so many international flights, Lufthansa just says that the individual bringing the child to the airport must be “available” at the airport and contactable by phone until the booked flight departs.

So you could be sitting in a cell phone parking lot just waiting for departure.

The flying experience

Lufthansa does not explicitly mention that the child will get preboarding although that is typically the case for unaccompanied minors.

The airline did state that they will seat the child close to a flight attendant, which will make it easier for the flight attendant to assist if there are any issues.

(Keep in mind that flight attendants are not designed to be babysitters).

It would be a good idea to provide the child with some snacks but Lufthansa does have a children’s menu put together by top chef Alexander Herrmann.

On the menu, you can find fun dishes like “rice pudding mouse,” “dragon feet” or “hen house.”

Reportedly, these dishes were voted on by actual children so you can count on them to not only be well balanced meals, but attractive to your child.

These children menu items can be ordered whenever you book your flight and they come at no extra cost on all Lufthansa long-haul flights and various European flights.

If you don’t order anything off the menu at the time of booking, you can still make an order online up to 24 hours before departure.

Once the child lands at the destination, they will be handed over to a staff member who will then take the child over to meet the person collecting them.

Lufthansa will require that person to provide a valid ID or passport.

Typically, on international flights you are not permitted to meet the child at the gate so you will likely be picking up the child from a specific area.

If you are picking up the child from Frankfurt airport then you can collect them from FRACares care service which is located in the corridor between departure halls A and B in Terminal 1.

At Munich Airport the pick-up service area is located in front of the exit at baggage reclaim.

Be aware Lufthansa states that “the individual bringing the child to the airport and collecting the child from the destination airport must be at least 18 years of age.”

How to book Lufthansa unaccompanied minor reservation

You cannot book an unaccompanied minor ticket online. Instead, you have to use the Lufthansa Service Center or at your travel agency.

Tips for having a successful flight for your unaccompanied minor

Arrive extra early.

You never know how long the lines will be or what type of hiccup you might encounter when sending off an unaccompanied minor.

So be sure that you arrive extra early for check-in so that you can handle all of your paperwork without stressing.

Pay attention to the weather

If the weather is not looking great on the day and time of departure then pay close attention to the flight status and weather patterns. You could end up dealing with a delayed flight or cancellation.

Also, make sure you are aware of the weather at the destination because if the weather is bad, there could be a chance of a flight diversion.

Plan out the food situation

Lufthansa is one of the airlines that provides a special food service for children so it might be worth taking advantage of that. But often the best strategy is to fill up your child before the flight and then just provide them with light snacks for the flight.

However, given how long some of these flights might be, it could be easier to put more trust into Lufthansa dining.

Give your child some entertainment

You know the unaccompanied child better than anyone else so provide them with things that they will enjoy playing with during the flight. These could be toys, tablets, gaming devices, etc.

It does sound like Lufthansa will provide some things like toys, drawing equipment, and a special children’s entertainment program but you may want to check with them to see exactly what they can offer your child on the flight.

Also, make sure that you inquire about power outlets at your child’s seat.

Try to limit the baggage

If you can, try to limit the carry-on for your child to one single bag if possible. This will be especially helpful for smaller children who may struggle to deal with two bags.

Track the flight

Since you, the guardian or parent, will no doubt be interested in keeping track of the flight status, I would recommend downloading an app like FlightAware. That will help you stay up-to-date on the flight status but you can also check the Lufthansa app.

Lufthansa has a pretty standard unaccompanied minor policy.

They go further than some airlines do by providing a special children’s menu, toys and other items for children, and by placing them close to a flight attendant. The dedicated check-in desks are also an upgrade for a many airlines.

The fees also are not that bad although they do not allow you to combine related children together under one fee which is a drawback.

What a mess!

We’ve been using the unaccompanied children service for about 18 years, when our kids of different ages started traveling alone due to our life situation working abroad. We had no other choice. Today hopefully was the last time we used this service, as my youngest is old enough now to fly on his own. This service is not recommendable at all.

FRANKFURT international Airport No Information about service/check in counter, as it changes every time our kids fly (now it is B 336, not A anymore) no trained personnel (qiute unfriendly and incapable) not customer friendly, but expensive

The personnel in charge to check in the kids seems to be more interested in their extralong fingernails than in knowing how to check in a child . Why don’t they get any training so thye’d know how to check in a child?

So, at arrival it starts already with losing time searching the right counter. When finally arrived at the counter, this morning, shortly before Christmas, there were only 3 desks open, although really many people waiting for check in – most of them disabled in wheelchairs and older people, just a few kids. What about trying to separate the disabled from the unaccompanied? Of course it takes time to organize a wheelchair, when there are just 5 pieces for the whole airport! Why dont’t they ask somebody to sponsor some more wheelchakirs, if Lufthansa cant afford more? I guess I don’t have to explain the situation. What I don’t understand: When it is well known that there would be many passangers, as they have already booked the service !!!! why don’t you have staff and wheelchairs there?

The waitress didn’t even seem to realize that she was the one to serve at the “Unaccompanied children services” She had no idea about documents, passport yes, no visa needed, no extra insurance needed, he is an EU-citizen, even seeing the Austrian passport, the ticket was from Frankfurt to Linz (Austria) and a 12 year old boy in front of her superlong eyelashes, she kept on asking why he’s not speaking other languages than German (why is this important for an unaccompanied child to speak more languages????). Of course he speaks German and a bit of English, he is 12, but he is not a native English speaker. However in Austria, where he flied to, they all speak German, so no need for him to speak English or any other language than German! Austria is a German speaking country. And his language skills are not important.

Anyway, we have booked the service, so we expect the personnel to do their job, just check in the child, nothing more! , not asking about encourageing the passengers, but not to discourage them.

Next point: This lady at the front desk kept on calling her colleagues, we didn’t know whom and why, she then disappeared and let us wait for around 15 minutes. Then we found out, nobody answered her calls, so she had to go and search a colleague to accompany my son to the gate.

Then she came back with another colleague, we asked what the matter was, why we had to wait, and she told me that we are late – of course, meanwhile we were late, the lady before didn’t check my child in, didn’t send the luggage, didn’t find a person to pick him and bring him to the gate. She was upset and accused me we should be at the check in desk much time earlier, as they don’t have enough persons to bring the kids to the aircraft! So, why they don’t plan themselves, as they know they would have passengers? Why no information about the check in desk? Why they let people wait for so long time, as they already know these people need extra service and paid for it?

Resume: We have paid (again and many times) 170,- € for this “service” on a return flight and we are so completely disappointed that we can’t just accept, but had to write it down here. It seems, this price is extra high, maybe to keep custumers from booking it… It is not the first time, it was always a mess, so why does Lufthansa offer if not able to deliver? We really expect an excuse. This young lady was a mess and a bad start into holidays for my son.

Lufthansa: Airline Policies for Kids and Infants

Are you planning a trip for your family with Lufthansa Airlines and need to know the airline policies for kids and infants? Whether you’re planning ahead or have an upcoming trip, it’s important to look up airline policies beforehand you can stay prepared during your trip. For example, you’ll likely need more information on stroller policies, bassinets, etc. Knowing what special toys and games they offer can also be helpful. We compiled all the child-related information you need to know before you book. Plus, all the details on in-flight entertainment, meal options, and more!

Babies up to two years old can travel in an adult’s lap and do not need their own seat. Once they turn two years old, even if it is during the trip, they will require their own seat. Only one baby per adult is allowed on the plane. If you have a second baby traveling with you, you can book an additional seat and take an appropriate car seat on board with you.

Child Fares

The Lufthansa airline policies for kids and infants also include various child fares. Babies under two years of age who do not occupy a seat are charged ten percent of the regular fare on all routes, except on German domestic flights where there is no charge. Children between the ages of two and eleven are charged 75% of the regular price of the flight on most routes.

Unaccompanied Minors

As per the Lufthansa airline policies for kids and infants, children between the ages of five and eleven may only fly unaccompanied if they are using the special service Lufthansa provides. Or, if they are traveling with someone who is at least twelve years old. Lufthansa assures that children will be in good hands before take-off, during the flight and after landing. Upon arrival, a member of staff will take your child to meet the person who is picking them up (after checking their valid ID).

Tickets for unaccompanied children cannot be booked online. Parents should visit the Lufthansa website prior to the flight to complete the special service form and find the list of required documents for the flight. Children have the same carry-on baggage permissions as adults, but should be able to carry their own bag unassisted. An additional service charge applies per route and per child when taking advantage of this program.

Stroller policy

At most airports, you can bring a stroller with you until just before boarding. It will be returned to you once you land and exit the plane.

Bassinets are available for babies under 24 pounds in weight and under 26 inches in length. They can be reserved up to 52 hours before the flight departs. The number of bassinets on each flight is limited. In some cases, there may be an additional seat reservation fee for the seat with the bassinet.

Child Car Seat

A child restraint system, or car seat, can be used on board the aircraft. Flight attendants will assist in properly setting up the seat according to the instructions. Parents should visit the Lufthansa website in advance to see a list of approved seats. The use of these seats on the plane is completely voluntary.

Baby care is also included in the Lufthansa airline policies for kids and infants. You do not need to bring water for babies’ bottles as there will be enough on board. Extra diapers are also available in case of an emergency. Flight attendants will warm up bottles or baby food for you during the flight.

Food policy

Snacks and meals for children are provided on the plane. A delicious and healthy children’s menu is available on flights for children over two. You can order meals when you purchase your flight, and up to 24 hours before departure. Baby food jars, soups, and mini Vienna sausages are available without booking as long as supplies last.

Entertainment Options

Lufthansa’s in-flight entertainment consoles offer programming aimed especially at children. Kids can choose from documentaries, movies, radio shows and more. Parents also have the option of blocking childrens’ viewing of other channels by speaking with the flight crew. You can visit the Lufthansa website for an online guide showing specific entertainment options on your flight.

Special Toys and Games

Special toys and games are one of the best parts of the Lufthansa airline policies for kids and infants. The cabin crew on a Lufthansa flight will have toys for your small children, such as coloring books and puzzles. If your children are on their first flight with Lufthansa, they will receive a logbook on board in which they can collect and record their flights. When the logbook is full, they will receive a special pilot’s certificate.

Happy Travels!

We hope you liked this compilation of the Lufthansa Airline Policies Kids and Infants ! Whether you’re still shopping around for the right airline or have your minds made up, we’re sure you’ll have a wonderful trip with whatever you choose. Enjoy your flight on Lufthansa with your kids!

Traveling to Europe with kids? What to know about vaccination and entry rules

Sasha Brady

Do children need a booster for travel in Europe this summer? Can unvaccinated children travel? Here's what you need to know as the European Union (EU) introduces flexible travel rules for people under the age of 18.

Across the EU, tourists who completed their primary jabs more than 270 days ago need a booster to enter countries such as France , Spain and Italy  — or be considered unvaccinated and therefore subject to additional rules such as testing.

This recommendation was introduced by the European Commission (the legal arm of the EU) on February 1 under the EU Digital COVID Certificate regulation . Most EU member states adopted it, though some, such as Ireland , Denmark and Sweden , have since scrapped all COVID-19 entry requirements at their borders.

What it's like for Americans proving they are vaccinated in Europe

This week, the Commission introduced new rules on the EU digital COVID certificate that exempt children under the age of 18 from the 270 days acceptance period following the primary vaccination series. This means that children are considered fully vaccinated after having received their primary dose; whether that's a two-shot vaccine series or a one-shot Johnson & Johnson vaccine.

By April 6, this new feature will be included in the mobile app used to verify EU Digital COVID Certificates so that children's certificates remain active without the booster.

In a statement, Commissioner for Justice, Didier Reynders, said: "One of the biggest benefits of the EU Digital COVID Certificate is its flexibility to adapt to new circumstances. Following discussions with member states' public health experts, we have decided that the vaccination certificates of minors should not expire. When travelling, they will be able to continue using the certificate received after the primary series of vaccination."

This exemption applies to EU and Schengen Zone citizens and residents traveling within Europe, though some countries can adopt their own entry restrictions regardless of the Commission's ruling.

If you plan to travel to Europe with kids this summer, here's what you need to know about the latest entry rules and how they apply to you, even if you're traveling from countries outside of the EU like the UK and the US.

Can unvaccinated children travel to Europe?

Generally speaking, yes. Children under 12 are typically exempt from vaccination requirements in most countries but many require that children between the age of 12 and 18 have received the primary vaccine course to avoid testing rules.

What countries in Europe have scrapped COVID-19 entry restrictions?

Andorra , Denmark, Hungary , Lithuania , Iceland , Ireland, Montenegro , Norway , Poland , Romania , Slovenia , Sweden, and the United Kingdom have recently dropped all pandemic restrictions at their borders, meaning people no longer have to show vaccination certificates or negative tests to enter these countries, regardless of where they are coming from.

Countries in Europe with travel restrictions

Here are some of the destinations in Europe that still require proof of vaccination, recovery or a negative test from travelers.

People over the age of 12 need one of the following: proof of vaccination (boosters mandatory 270 days after primary vaccine course); a recovery certificate (issued within the past 180 days); or a negative PCR (72 hours) or antigen (24 hours) test.

Boosters are not required for those under 18 to be considered fully vaccinated.

Generally, people traveling from the EU/Schengen area can present proof of vaccination (booster mandatory 270 days after primary vaccine course); a recovery certificate (issued within the past 180 days) or a negative PCR (72 hours) or antigen (36 hours) test.

People from outside the EU or an area categorized as high-risk must present proof of vaccination. Children under 18 can present proof of recovery or a negative test. Children under 12 are exempt.

Belgium's rules vary depending on the COVID-19 risk associated with your departing country.

What is Unaccompanied Minor Service?

Young children traveling without a parent or legal guardian are considered to be Unaccompanied Minors. Most airlines provide a service to assist these children from their point of departure to their final destination.

What age does my child have to be to qualify as an Unaccompanied Minor?

Children aged between five and 11 years may only fly unaccompanied if they are using Lufthansa’s special service or if they are travelling with someone who is at least 12 years old. However, children aged from 12 up to a maximum of 17 years old, who are travelling alone, can also be looked after at the request of their parents. Children under 5 years of age are not allowed to travel unless accompanied by an adult who is at least 16 years old.

What are the fees associated with this service?

Fee for an Unaccompanied Minor on flights within Germany or Europe: 50 € (USD 75) per flight section. Fee for an Unaccompanied Minor on intercontinental flights: 80 € (USD 120) per flight section.

Are there any flight restrictions?

Contact Lufthansa for more information.

How do I book this service?

Tickets for unaccompanied children cannot be booked online; they can only be booked through the Lufthansa Service Centre, your travel agency or at the Lufthansa ticket desk at the airport.

Lufthansa Pregnancy, Infant and Children Travel Policy

lufthansa travel under 18

Lufthansa is the flag carrier of Germany and the largest airline in Europe in terms of overall passengers carried. Here is a recap of Lufthansa’s pregnancy, infant and children travel policies.

Expectant Mothers Flying with Lufthansa

Expectant mothers with complication-free pregnancies can fly with Lufthansa until the end of the 36th week of pregnancy or up to four weeks before their expected due date without a medical certificate from a gynecologist. However, we recommend that expectant mothers beyond the 28th week of their pregnancies carry a current letter from a physician which includes the following:

  • confirmation that the pregnancy is progressing without complications
  • the expected due date
  • the doctor should expressly state that the patient’s pregnancy does not prevent her from flying.

Expectant mothers beyond the 36th week of their pregnancies or those with complicated pregnancies can request a certificate of exemption via Lufthansa’s Medical Operation Centre. From this time onwards pregnant women must submit a doctor’s certificate, dated within 72 hours of the scheduled time of departure. The certificate must state that the doctor has examined the patient and found her to be physically fit for air travel. It must also state the estimated due date.

In the case of a complicated pregnancy or twins or a multiple pregnancy it is essential to request a certificate of exemption from the 28th week of pregnancy.

Infants (under 2 years old) Flying with Lufthansa

Infants are not required to have their own seat however, you must inform Lufthansa that you will be traveling with an infant on your lap.

Only one lap child is allowed per adult. A seat will have to be purchased for each additional infant if flying with more than one infant.

You may choose to purchase a seat for your infant as long as you have the proper child restraint device.

On international routes infants under two years of age are usually charged 10% of the applicable available adult fare. However, they are not entitled to a seat. If it is important to you that your child has a separate seat, you may book a ticket under the terms for a child aged from two to 11 years.

On domestic German routes it is Lufthansa’s policy not to charge a fare for infants. In this case too there is no entitlement to a seat.

A ticket will have to be purchased for any flight on which the infant will be over 2 years old.

Children (2 to 11 years old) Flying with Lufthansa

Fares vary according to destination. Children aged two years and over are entitled to the same free baggage allowance as adults, if they have paid at least 50% of the adult fare.

Baggage Allowance for Infants

Infants aged under two years have a free allowance of one bag plus a fully collapsible pushchair; under the ‘Weight Concept’ one bag with a maximum weight of 10 kg and under the ‘Piece Concept’ one bag with maximum weight of 23 kg.

Strollers, Bassinets and Child Restraint Devices

At most stations you can keep your pushchair, stroller or baby buggy that you depend on until you board the aircraft.

A foldable pushchair or baby basket we transport free of charge. A pram will be transported in the cargo hold.

Your stroller will be given to you, wherever possible, after disembarking the aircraft. Please beware that the place where the items are returned can vary depending on the location at your destination.

On Lufthansa long-haul flights special baby cots are available. Please be aware that the number of seats with cots is limited. The bassinets are suitable for babies up to 14 kg and up to 83 cm in length and are provided free of charge.

Child Restraint Devices

Child restraint devices must have the labels noted below, or you will not be allowed to use it during take-off, landing, and surface movements. This includes booster seats and other types of harnesses.

Special Services

Lufthansa carries baby food on all its flights. But you shouldn’t forget your baby’s bottle and their favourite food. Water for the bottle is available on board. Flight attendants will also warm the baby’s bottle, and cups.

There are changing tables in the washrooms on board.

Sending your child on a flight alone can be an exciting (and nerve-wracking) experience.

Whether they’ve been flying with you since babyhood or are just getting their travel legs now, you and your child need to be prepared for travel as an unaccompanied minor.

In the U.S., airlines have a wide array of rules and costs when it comes to young flyers traveling alone. Let’s look at each airline’s policy for exactly what you need to know before your big kid takes to the skies on their own.

For countless reasons, you may find that sending your child on a flight alone makes sense for you and your family.

Whether they are going to meet up with their other parent, grandparents, friends, family, school, or summer camp, being prepared will help ensure a safe and comfortable trip.

Although rules vary by airline, in most cases, an unaccompanied minor can be a child between the ages of 5 and 14. You can expect to pay up to $150 for an unaccompanied service from the airline to help with the travel logistics.

Below is a chart to take a quick view of policies, followed by a more in-depth breakdown of each airline.

Alaska Airlines has Junior Jetsetters, an unaccompanied minor service for kids 5 to 17 on domestic and international flights.

When flying with Alaska, Junior Jetsetters receive a lanyard and a wristband so staff and crew can easily identify them. Kids will receive early boarding and a special safety briefing to make sure they are familiar with the emergency protocols.

Your child will be supervised for their entire journey for $50 on nonstop flights. Kids ages 8 to 17 can fly a more complex itinerary with connections for $75.

Junior Jetsetters who have attained MVP, MVP Gold, Gold 75K, or Gold 100K Mileage Plan status have these fees waived.

Parents or guardians can escort the child all the way to the gate as long as they have obtained an escort pass at the ticket counter.

To book a ticket for an unaccompanied minor on Alaska Airlines, call 800-252-7522.

Hot Tip: Some Alaska Airlines routes may not allow unaccompanied minors, including for seasonal severe weather.

Minors traveling with the unaccompanied minor program receive a trackable wristband, access to the Sky Zone lounge for kids, and a personal escort throughout their travel day.

  • Detroit (DTW)

Tips for Unaccompanied Minor Flights

Girl watching iPad on Delta A350-900 economy

You’ve made the decision to send your little one on their first big adventure by themselves and confirmed that the airline will assist them, but there are still some things you can do to help set them up for a successful journey.

Here are tips from fellow parents and directly from the airlines to help your child fly as an unaccompanied minor.

You are likely nervous. Your child probably is, too. Making sure that they are emotionally and mentally prepared will be extremely important.

Going over exactly what the trip will entail, what is expected of them, who they can rely on, and what to do in an emergency can be calming and helpful.

Remind them that the flight crew is there to help them and that someone will be waiting for them at the other end of the flight.

For kids, nothing is worse than their favorite piece of technology running out of battery.

Let them indulge in screen time and ensure their phones, tablets, and other devices are all charged up for the trip. And don’t forget the chargers!

This will also ensure they can stay in touch with you if needed.

Apple AirTags have exploded in popularity to keep track of checked luggage.

Well, there is no more precious cargo than your child. Toss an AirTag in their backpack (Apple sells a  single AirTag for $29 , or a pack of  4 AirTags for $99 ), or, better yet, use an AirTag bracelet .

With an AirTag, you can see almost exactly where they are, which can be handy during pick-up.

Yes, there will be cell phones and proper documentation from the airline, but you never know.

It can’t hurt to have a list of emergency contacts and phone numbers on a piece of paper, if needed.

We all function better when we aren’t hungry, right?

Even though some unaccompanied minor services offer snacks, it’s a good idea to make sure your kid is well-fed before their flight and has a bag full of snacks to munch on during their journey.

You’ve packed snacks, and the airline will likely provide some as well, but it’s a good idea to give your kid some spending money just in case of a long delay.

Whether they’re waiting to board or on the plane for longer than planned, having a little cash or a credit card can come in handy if they need to buy something.

This goes for all travelers, but the less you board with, the less likely it will get left behind.

A backpack is probably the easiest for smaller travelers, so they don’t have to deal with reaching into overhead bins.

Being able to track the flight will help calm a parent or guardian’s nerves and keep the person picking up the unaccompanied minor informed if there are any delays.

Whether using the airline’s app or a third-party app such as FlightAware , a little bit of technology in your pocket is nice.

Girl walking through airport with Away bag in Rio de Janeiro airport GIG

Sending your little one on a flight by themselves is a huge moment filled with a plethora of feelings with everything from excitement to fear. But with the right preparation, your unaccompanied minor could make their first successful trip of many to come.

Many airlines will make sure that your child has a safe and enjoyable flight, and if they are flying Alaska Airlines and have elite status, they won’t even charge you!

Many factors go into whether or not you and your family are comfortable enough with this type of travel. Hopefully, the information you found here will help with your decision.

Safe travels!

Lufthansa Carry-On Rules: Everything You Need to Know 2

Guide to Lufthansa Carry-On Size, Weight, and Liquid Policies

If you want to avoid checking a bag or paying extra fees when flying Lufthansa, you need to read this.

Lufthansa Carry-On Size (Dimensions)

Lufthansa personal item size, lufthansa carry-on weight limit, carry-on rules for infants, rules for lufthansa regional aircraft, related content: lufthansa flight deals, free baggage allowance for intercontinental flights:, free baggage allowance for european flights:, overweight baggage (also known as “excess baggage”), excess baggage charges & fees, carry-on liquids: lufthansa liquids policy, carry-on food, carry-on pet fees, prohibited items:, more related articles…..

In this article, we’ll explain everything you need to know about Lufthansa’s carry-on policy. This includes Lufthansa carry-on size and weight limit, personal items, prohibited items, and liquid restrictions. We’ll also give you our recommendation for a great carry-on bag when flying Lufthansa.

Lufthansa Carry-On Policy

Lufthansa allows one piece of carry-on luggage and one personal item onboard, at no charge, for economy class and they allow two pieces of carry-on luggage plus a personal item for those flying in the business and first-class cabins. (Unfortunately, flights from the U.S. can only bring on one bag and one personal item regardless of class of service).

Lufthansa Carry on Size 2024

The personal item must fit under the seat in front of you, and the carry-on bag must be stowed in the overhead bin.

Lufthansa’s size requirements for a carry-on are:

  • Dimensions for a carry-on bag: max. 55 x 40 x 23 cm
  • Dimensions for a foldable garment bag: max. 57 x 54 x 15 cm
  • Dimensions for a personal item: max. 40 x 30 x 10 cm

Personal items include a purse, briefcase, laptop bag, backpack, shopping bag, or a similar-sized item. The following items may be brought onboard without counting toward your carry-on limit.

  • Duty-Free items (a reasonable and limited amount)
  • One diaper bag (for customers traveling with a lap infant) as a carry-on item
  • Special items (coat, umbrella, infant car seat, etc.)
  • Mobility aids (wheelchairs, canes, walkers, etc.)

If you aren’t sure what size your carry-on is, Lufthansa provides “size check templates” located at their ticketing counters.

lufthansa travel under 18

If the hand luggage is too big or too heavy, you’re going to have to pay a fee, so it’s always better to know your luggage size and the airlines’ limitations in advance.

Lufthansa requires carry-on baggage to have a maximum weight of 8 kg (18 lbs.). However, they don’t weigh your carry-on items prior to boarding, so you’re generally not going to have a problem if it’s too heavy.

The maximum baggage weight applies to checked baggage more than hand luggage since they weigh your checked baggage when you check in for your flight.

Recommended Carry-On Bag

If you are looking for an international-sized carry-on bag, the Travelpro 20-inch Global Expandable Spinner Carry-on is definitely one to consider since it fits within Lufthansa’s carry-on size limit of 22x16x9 inches.

It’s durable, reasonably priced, and holds enough for shorter trips (3-5 days). Plus the spinner wheels make it very easy to get through the airport quickly and effortlessly.

Travelpro Versapack Global Carry-On 20" Expandable Spinner

Case Dimensions:

  • H: 19 in. W: 15 in. D: 7.75 in.
  • Weight: 7.3 lbs.

Fits 80% of International Airlines* as a Carry-On

Lap Infant Carry-On Policy

  • Children under 2 have a free checked baggage allowance of 1 piece up to 50 pounds (23 kg), excluding Economy Light fares
  • A car seat, folding buggy, or baby carrier may be carried as carry-on baggage free of charge.

Stroller Check Policy

  • Strollers are allowed to be used throughout the airport and will be checked before the flight and handed back immediately after arrival at your destination. One item may be checked free of charge, including a stroller, carrycot, or car seat.

On certain flights with “Lufthansa Regional” or where country-specific variations apply (flights from Italy, India, and the USA), First and Business Class passengers must check in their second piece of carry-on baggage.

On nearly all Lufthansa regional flights, passengers can keep their carry-on baggage with them until boarding and get it back again immediately on disembarkation at the aircraft steps.

All carry-on baggage within Lufthansa’s size restrictions will be gate checked, free of charge, during the boarding process and returned upon deplaning.

Lufthansa Baggage Fees (For Checked Luggage)

If you have to check luggage on Lufthansa, there are some size and weight rules you should also be aware of.

All checked baggage must be less than the maximum weight of 50 pounds (23 kg) for economy and premium economy fares and 70 pounds (32 kg) for business and first class fares. The baggage dimensions must be less than the maximum linear dimensions per bag up to 62 inches (158 cm).

As a general rule, it’s always good to check  Lufthansa’s baggage calculator  for the most up-to-date information and fees.

Here is a summary of your permitted free baggage allowance, by fare type, for International flights:

  • Economy Light Fare:  You will have to pay for your checked baggage.
  • Economy Fare:  1 free checked bag (50 pounds/23 kg)
  • Premium Economy Fare : 2 free checked bags (50 pounds/23 kg)
  • Business Class Fare:  2 free checked bags (70 pounds/32 kg)
  • First Class Fare:  3 free checked bags (70 pounds/32 kg)

Here is a summary of your permitted free baggage allowance, by fare type, for flights within Europe:

  • Economy Light Fare:   You will have to pay for your checked baggage.
  • Economy Classic Fare:  1 free checked bag (50 pounds/23 kg)
  • Economy Flex Fare:  1 free checked bag (50 pounds/23 kg)

In Economy and Premium Economy Class, a piece of baggage is considered to be “excess baggage” when it weighs more than 23 kg (up to a maximum of 32 kg) and/or is larger than 158 cm (the sum of width X + height Y + depth Z up to a maximum of 292 cm).

In Business and First Class, a piece of baggage is considered to be excess baggage when its total dimensions are greater than 158 cm up to a maximum of 292 cm.

Lufthansa will charge you flat rates for excess baggage if your checked baggage either exceeds the permitted weight and/or dimensions or if the number of checked pieces of baggage exceeds the allowance for your fare type.

You can check your free baggage allowance in just a few steps with the Lufthansa baggage calculator – based on the route, travel class, and fare. There you’ll also find the prices and permitted maximum weight and dimensions for excess baggage.

The rules for carry-on liquids are set by the TSA in the US and the EASA and European Commission in Europe.  Lufthansa doesn’t have its own specific Liquids Policy, they just enforce the rules and policies of the Authorities.

  • Containers with liquids and gel-like substances may hold up to 100 ml (maximum capacity must be printed on the container).
  • All containers must be carried in a plastic bag (transparent, resealable, max. capacity 1 liter). One bag per person.
  • The bag must be presented separately at security. Take your liquids out of your carry-on baggage at the security screening point and present them separately. In exceptional cases, liquids may be opened in the course of security checks and removed from their outer packaging.
  • Liquid duty-free goods purchased at an international airport or on board an aircraft outside the EU must be transported in a tamper-proof, certified bag on connecting flights via an EU airport. The proof of purchase must be inside the bag and the bag must be sealed by the retailer.
  • Medicines and special food (e.g. baby food) can be carried outside the plastic bag and must also be presented at security.

There are two different scenarios here.  The food you bring with you from home and food you buy at the airport after you have gone through security.

An important thing to note is the classification of liquid foods vs. solid foods.

The general rule is “If you can spill it, spread it, spray it, pump it, or pour it, then it’s considered a liquid or gel,”.   This means your food may be considered a liquid and will fall under the TSA 3-1-1 liquids rule , which mandates that any liquid, gel, cream, aerosol, or paste in a carry-on must be 3.4 ounces or less, and fit in one quart-size resealable bag (only one such bag is allowed per passenger).

The TSA website advises what food can be brought with you on your flight.  This applies to food you are bringing from home through security.   Once you get through security, you can bring just about any food on the plane that you buy at the airport.

Carry-On Pet Policy

Lufthansa may not charge for your carry-on bag, but they will charge for your carry-on pet . The price depends upon the route and is charged once per flight direction.

If you’re going to bring a pet on board with you, it must be able to fit in a small, ventilated pet carrier that fits under the seat in front of you.  Your pet carrier will count as a carry-on bag and cannot exceed 22″ x 16″ x 9″ and the combined weight of your pet and the carrier must not exceed 18 pounds.

Only smaller dogs and cats, who weigh no more than 8 kg including their transport container, may be transported under certain conditions as additional carry-on baggage in the passenger cabin. Larger dogs and cats and all other animal species, regardless of their weight and size, are not allowed in the cabin.

To enable you to take your pet with you into the cabin as carry-on baggage, Lufthansa will need your confirmation that the animal meets the stated requirements. For this purpose, please present two copies of the fully completed and signed form at the check-in counter: Form for transporting an animal in the passenger cabin

Prohibited Items & Dangerous Goods

There are certain items that are considered dangerous and classified as a hazardous materials.  Dangerous goods are prohibited from both your carry-on and checked baggage on all flights.  These rules are not specific to any airline and are mandated by the Federal Aviation Administration and European Aviation Safety Agency.

Here is a list of items that are strictly prohibited on Lufthansa flights:

  • Firearms and ammunition
  • Self-defense sprays, such as mace and  pepper spray
  • Explosives, including fireworks and flares
  • Flammable liquids, including gasoline, lighter fluid, and kerosene
  • Poisonous, infectious, or radioactive substances
  • Knives and sharp objects (pocket knives, cutting instruments,  razors , ice picks, carpet knives, metal scissors, box cutters, or similar items)
  • Any alcoholic beverage with more than 70 percent alcohol
  • Camping equipment containing flammable liquids or gasses
  • Hoverboards, including electric skateboards, balance boards, gravity boards, and self-balancing devices
  • Medical or liquid oxygen
  • Torch lighters , lighter fluid, strike-anywhere matches, and fire starters
  • Wet-cell batteries

Summary: Lufthansa Carry-On Luggage Policy

It is important to note that Lufthansa’s baggage rules are subject to change and may vary depending on the type of ticket purchased and the route you are flying. For example, there is no free baggage allowance for economy light fares, two free bags with business class fares, and up to three free bags on international first class fares.

It’s always a good idea to review Lufthansa’s baggage guidelines before your flight and to pack accordingly to avoid any inconvenience or additional charges.

Lufthansa flying with babies

Under what conditions does lufthansa accept infants.

No age restriction regarding the acceptance of infants applies on Lufthansa flights. When booking your flight, you should inform Lufthansa or your travel agent that you will be travelling with a baby. Special services are offered to cater fully to your needs when flying with your baby:

  • Lufthansa carries healthy baby food on all its flights, but you shouldn’t forget your baby’s bottle and favorite food.
  • Adequate water for the bottle is available onboard, which saves you from having to buy water after you have passed through the security.
  • Lufthansa flight attendants will also warm the baby’s bottle, and glasses, too.
  • There are baby changing tables in the washrooms and also spare nappies on board for emergencies.

When is my child required to have a seat for travel on Lufthansa flights?

For safety reasons, only one infant under 2 years is permitted to be seated on an adult’s lap in flight. Passengers traveling with a second child under 2 years old have the option of booking a seat and taking an appropriate child restraint system on board for the second infant. The second infant can be booked as a child .

Children who turn 2 years of age during the trip require their own seat, and the child fare will be charged for the entire trip . The deciding factor for the age limits is the date of the return flight.

Does Lufthansa offer discounts for infants or children?

Lufthansa offers two types of children’s fares:

  • Infant fare – babies up to 2 years of age not occupying a seat travel free of charge on domestic German routes or for 10% of the regular fare on all other routes .
  • Child fare – children aged between 2 and 12 years require their own seat and can travel for 75% of the regular price of the flight on the majority of routes and almost all fares.

The child fare will be charged for babies up to 2 years of age, for whom a seat was reserved, and children who turn 2 years of age before the return flight.

Children need their own travel documents with a photo as required by an EU directive. Therefore, irrespective of the child’s age, entries on your passport as the parent are invalid.

What other services does Lufthansa offer for families with children?

With Lufthansa’s Online or Mobile Check-in , the whole family can check in conveniently from home, as early as 23 hours before departure. You can print out your boarding passes or have them sent to your mobile phone and, once you arrive at the airport, you only have to check your baggage at the designated baggage drop-off counters at the airport or, to avoid waiting, at the Lufthansa self-service baggage kiosks in Munich, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Geneva and Vienna airports.

On a long-haul flight, it is especially important that the whole family sits together and that your children can sit on their favorite seats, such as next to the window. Lufthansa recommends that you reserve your seats when booking your flight. Standard Economy seats can be reserved in advance for a fee (EUR 12-35, depending on the route). If you don’t reserve your seats in advance, you can choose your seats at no additional cost with Online or Mobile Check-in.

At some airports, you can even check in and check your baggage in the evening before your flight. Late Night Check-in via one member of the family is possible if this person carries all ID documents of the family members. Also, check-in machines available at the airport are ideal when you are traveling with your family if you haven’t already checked in for your flight.

As a family with children, you can use the new family counters at the airports in Frankfurt and Munich to check in, or just to check your baggage. Visible from a distance thanks to a great archway, the Family Check-in Area is open to families with children under 12 years. The two Lufthansa mascots, Lu and Cosmo, invite children to take part in check-in. Lufthansa staff will take your baggage and hand you your boarding passes and The Family Pilot brochure, which contains valuable tips on the location of children’s play areas, family-friendly restaurants, the nearest viewing terrace, pharmacies, etc.

Families with children board the aircraft among the first passengers (before passengers with priority boarding), so you can take your seats on board comfortably and calmly. Flight attendants are happy to assist with stowing your hand luggage and fastening children’s seatbelts.

One baby carrier per child or a child car seat or a foldable pushchair/buggy may be taken in the cabin free of charge (may have to be transported in the cargo hold). At most airports,  Lufthansa offers you the opportunity of taking your baby’s pushchair, pram, or buggy right up to the aircraft door ; a flight attendant will take it from you and hand it back to you immediately after landing. For smaller children up to the age of 7, you may take a child restraint system with you to use on board .

Infant on Lap

When traveling with infants, bookings can be made online. The number of babies must not exceed the number of adults accompanying them because only one infant is permitted on an adult’s lap in flight . If one adult is traveling with two infants (up to 2 years), the second baby can be booked as a child (2-11 years). Bookings cannot be made for babies not yet born. The age limits are not calculated from the date the booking is made, but from the return date of the booked flight. Babies receive their own tickets, except flights within Germany where an infant is carried, free of charge, on the ticket of the accompanying adult.

Special baby cots are available on Lufthansa long-haul flights . The bassinets are suitable for babies up to 11 kg and up to 67 cm in length. Although bassinets are provided free of charge, there is a limited number of seats with cots, and a seat reservation fee may apply. If you would like to have a cot on board, you should call Lufthansa Reservations Office immediately after booking, but no later than 52 hours before flight departure.

With Lufthansa, children under the age of 2 years are entitled to a free baggage allowance of one piece of baggage up to 23 kg and 158 cm (except with the Economy Light fare) .

Infants with Reserved Seats

Infants may also travel in their own car-type safety seat on a seat in the cabin. The use of child restraint systems is, of course, free of charge, but an additional seat must be booked, and the child fare must be paid for children under the age of 2 years . Lufthansa does not provide child restraint systems, but as a parent, you are welcome to bring your own child car seat or baby seat on board with you for your child. The child restraint system must be one approved by Lufthansa, which you can check in the list of suitable child restraint systems , and in perfect working order .

The child’s safety seat must be secured with the aircraft seat belt during the entire flight. You must be familiar with the manufacturer’s instructions for the system’s use and fitting in an aircraft and able to attach the safety seat to the passenger seat on your own (flight attendants will not be able to help you fix the child restraint system in place). The child restraint system must be checked if it cannot be fitted properly to the passenger seat or is not suitable for use in the aircraft cabin.

The use of the child’s safety seat must not inconvenience other passengers or impede them in the event of a possible emergency evacuation. For this purpose, you should take into consideration the following rules when checking in and choosing your seat :

  • Lufthansa recommends selecting a window seat for your child in the child restraint system and the adjacent seat for you, as an accompanying adult.
  • For large aircraft, the reservation of a seat in the middle block is possible.
  • Avoid selecting seats in exit rows.

No special safety measures are necessary for children who are over 7 years of age and/or weigh more than 18 kg, you simply need to fasten their seat belt securely in an ordinary seat. If you are traveling with children up to about 7 years of age, you may take a child restraint system with you. A child car seat can be used to increase the passive safety of children on board the aircraft, but their use is entirely voluntary. You will have time to get to your seat and attach the child seat without rushing because families enjoy priority boarding on Lufthansa flights. Children aged 2 years and over are entitled to the same free baggage allowance as adults .

On long-haul flights, you can select special programmes for your child from the varied entertainment programme. Lufthansa’s in-flight programme offers children everything from Hollywood films and funny cartoons, sports magazines, and thrilling animal documentaries right through to chart hits on Lufthansa Radio. On long-haul flights from Germany, Lufthansa amenity kits for children await young passengers traveling in First and Business Class, a kit in which they will find all kinds of items specially adapted for them (child’s toothbrush, toys, etc.).

Special children’s menus are served on flights of more than 185 minutes duration in Economy Class and more than 75 minutes duration in Business Class. Alexander Herrmann creates children’s menus for Lufthansa which can be ordered directly when you book your flight, at no extra cost, on all Lufthansa long-haul flights and various European flights. Also, you can order these delicious children’s menus, online or by calling Lufthansa Service Centre, at any time after booking up to 24 hours before departure.

Unaccompanied minors

Children traveling alone.

We want your child to have a safe and positive trip. For safety, we require children age 5 – 14 traveling alone to use our unaccompanied minor service. This service is optional for children age 15 – 17, but if requested, then the fee applies.

The unaccompanied minor fee is $150* each way, plus applicable taxes † , in addition to the ticket price. This fee covers additional siblings on the same flight.

* Amount quoted in U.S. dollar (USD)

† Flights within the U.S. are subject to a 7% tax, and flights originating in Canada are charged a 5% Goods and Services Tax (GST).

Unaccompanied minor service

Our service includes:

  • Early boarding to allow extra time to get settled and meet the flight attendants
  • Kids-only lounges in our hub cities for flight connections
  • Complimentary Kids' Kits from Quaker with snacks and activities (for ages 5 – 10, in hub cities)
  • An airport escort to help your child to the gate for flight connections
  • Escorting the child to the authorized adult picking them up when they land

Keep in mind, our flight attendants will be busy with onboard duties and can’t continuously monitor your child during their flight. Let your child know to ring the call button if they need anything.

Age and flight restrictions for children traveling alone:

We don’t allow children to travel alone when their trips include:

  • Flights on another airline including codeshare and one world® partners

Booking your child's trip

Unaccompanied minors need to be booked by phone.

Contact Reservations

Preparing for travel

Whether your child has traveled alone or this is their first time, we recommend talking with them about the trip and what to expect. Assure them our team is there to help keep them safe.

Some helpful tips to prepare:

  • Point out our team uniforms at the airport. Remind your child to ask for help only from a uniformed team member.
  • Write down phone numbers for your child.
  • Pack games, books and money in one small carry-on.
  • Food and drink service is limited, so we recommend packing snacks for your child to enjoy during their flight.
  • Attach an ID card and contact information to your child’s carry-on bag or jacket.
  • Fully charge any electronic devices, and don’t forget to pack chargers and headphones.
  • Be sure your child knows to wait for a team member to walk them off the plane when they land (this includes older children using our service).

Note: We don’t hold or give personal medication to an unaccompanied child.

At the airport

Check-in and required documents.

Arrive at least 2 hours before the scheduled departure time of your child’s flight and speak with a ticket counter agent. Children traveling alone can’t check in online or at the kiosk.

You’ll need to fill out an unaccompanied minor form and any necessary Customs and Immigration documents for the day of departure. This form must remain with your child during their journey. At check-in, parents / guardians will also need to provide:

  • A birth certificate or passport as proof of the child’s age
  • The adult’s government-issued photo ID with their current address
  • Your phone number so we can contact you
  • The name, address and phone number of the adult meeting your child at their destination

Once your child is checked in, the ticket agent will give you a security pass from the airport ticket counter so you can take your child to the gate.

Boarding and takeoff

For a smooth departure:

  • An adult must take the child to the departure gate and stay until the flight is airborne.
  • When you get to the gate, tell the gate agent you have an unaccompanied minor traveling on the flight.
  • We’ll board your child early so they can meet the flight crew and learn about the plane’s safety features.
  • The gate agent will let you know when the flight is airborne and you can leave the airport.
  • Please contact the adult picking up your child to let them know they’re on their way.

During the flight

Our flight attendants will check on your child as duties allow, but they can’t continuously monitor your child throughout the flight.

Please remind your child to:

  • Tell a flight attendant if he or she needs assistance or feels discomfort.
  • Follow plane safety instructions, like wearing their seatbelt.
  • Wait for a uniformed team member to escort them off the airplane once it arrives at the gate.

Unaccompanied minor lounges

If your child has a connection, we have lounges for unaccompanied minors in these airports:

  • Dallas Fort Worth, TX (DFW)

While there, your child can wait for their connection and play games while supervised by American business partner personnel. These staff members will take your child outside the lounge to buy food and drinks, but they won’t be allowed to walk around outside alone.

Arrival and pick-up

For a seamless pick-up, don’t forget your government-issued photo ID. You’ll need to show it to get a security pass and meet the child at the gate (in the U.S.). You’ll also need to show it before we release the child to you.

We suggest arriving at least 2 hours before the child’s scheduled arrival so you have enough time.

Flight status and notifications

Stay connected with your child’s journey with flight notifications and remind the adult picking up your child from the airport to do the same. Be sure to get alerts for all flights in their trip.

Flight status

Flight delays and cancellations

We’ll call the contacts on the unaccompanied minor form and arrange an alternate flight if your child is unable to make a connecting flight due to delays or cancellations.

In the rare case that your child needs to stay overnight because of a missed connection, we’ll arrange for overnight accommodations, meals and supervision. We’ll call if this occurs.

Young adults (15 – 17 years of age)

If your young adult isn’t using the unaccompanied minor service and their flight is delayed or canceled, they will be accommodated as an adult customer. Keep in mind, many hotels won’t allow young people to check-in unless they are accompanied by an adult. Please remind them not to leave the airport for any reason unless they:

  • Are accompanied by a uniformed team member or police officer
  • Have spoken with a parent or designated adult

Please tell your young adult to speak to a team member if they have questions or need help.

Children traveling outside the U.S.

You may not be able to escort your child through security in some airports. If this is the case, a team member will take your child to the gate and stay with them until the flight departs.

Children under 18 may need a Letter of Consent to travel internationally without both parents.

Country-specific regulations

Some countries have additional restrictions for children traveling with guardians or as an unaccompanied minor.

If your child is traveling unaccompanied or with only one parent, you’ll need:

  • The child's birth certificate
  • Notarized travel authorization from both parents

The Brazilian Embassy or Consulate must issue, authenticate or legalize this travel authorization.

Contact the consulate in the child’s country of residence or check the National Council of Justice site for more information.

Brazilian National Council of Justice (CNJ) guidelines Opens another site in a new window that may not meet accessibility guidelines

Italian citizens younger than 14 traveling internationally must have their Individual Passport and Dichiarazione di Accompagno (Declaration of Temporary Guardianship for Travel Abroad). The document must include:

  • The signature of a parent or legal guardian
  • Authentication by local Police Headquarters
  • The name of the airline the child will use

For children with a document proving another nationality (not Italian), check with the local Italian embassy or consulate in their residence country or the embassy or consulate of their destination country for requirements.

Children younger than 18 (at time of travel) and traveling alone to or from Mexico must have a travel authorization letter. This letter must be:

  • Signed by at least one parent or legal guardian

All children should present their own passport and meet the requirements of their destination.

Spanish authorities require that all Spanish children traveling alone, with only one parent or with a third party have a travel permit requested by the parents or legal guardians. This permit must be issued by one of these: Police, Civil Guard, Notary’s Office or Town Hall.

For children with a document proving another nationality (not Spanish) and living in Spain, go to the consulate to complete the necessary paperwork.

What's the drinking age on international flights?

Young women friends drinking champagne in first class on airplane

This month marks the 70th anniversary of an event that changed flying as we know it. But if you want to mark this seminal moment in aviation, you probably won't find an observance at the National Air and Space Museum. Instead, try an airport bar .

In October 1949, Northwest Airlines became the first airline to serve alcohol aboard its flights. Since then, the preflight drink in first class, the free beverage on an international flight and the post-dinner nightcap have become enduring (although sometimes problematic ) rituals of flying.

If you're old enough to partake.

Since that first in-flight drink was poured during the Truman Administration, the minimum legal drinking age in the United States has gone from 18 years old in some states to a nationwide standard of 21. But as almost any American college student who's studied abroad can tell you, many other countries still cling to that lower drinking age of 18.

That poses an interesting question for teen travelers: At what age can a young adult passenger legally imbibe while flying outside of the United States? Can an 18-year-old American enjoy a gin and tonic while flying overseas?

The Points Guy contacted several airlines to find out. Turns out, the answer — involving the intersection of law and policy at 30,000 feet over multiple borders — is complicated.

If you're under 21, U.S. carriers are a no-drinking zone

The FAA doesn't police in-flight drinking, but airlines certainly do and typically follow the laws of the country in which they're based. For travelers, that means no matter the drinking age of the country you're in or over or en route to a U.S.-based airline won't serve alcohol to any passenger under 21.

"As a U.S.-registered carrier, the drinking age is 21," a spokesperson for American Airlines confirmed to TPG in an email.

Said Delta : "Delta uses the age of 21 as the threshold to serve customers alcohol on all flights."

The story was the same at United : "Customers must be 21 or older to consume alcohol on all flights," a policy you can also find on the airline's website .

So even when Delta starts flying people to Mars, the drinking age on that 300-million-mile flight likely will still be 21.

International carriers are a different story

Foreign carriers based in countries with a lower legal drinking age generally follow the policies of their home countries on board.

"In Mexico, the legal drinking age and official adulthood age is 18 years old," a spokesperson for Aeromexico told TPG in an email. "So on board our flights, any 18-year-old citizen, regardless of their nationality, is allowed to drink, as long as they show an official and valid ID (in this case, a passport)."

"As a U.K.-registered airline, we are regulated by the British Laws," Virgin Atlantic told TPG. "[We have an] age limit of 18 years for alcohol and tobacco consumption and sales. This applies to all routes that we serve." (Virgin Atlantic passengers who don't want to drink alcohol have some interesting alternatives. )

lufthansa travel under 18

Bottoms Up: Virgin Atlantic's drinking age is 18.

Lufthansa and British Airways also told TPG they have a drinking age of 18.

Drinker beware!

Just because you're flying on an international carrier, however, don't assume the drinking age is 18.

"For any international flights, ANA follows the rule of law in Japan with the legal drinking age being 20 years old for our passengers," a spokesperson for Tokyo-based All Nippon Airways told TPG.

Finnair has an even more complicated drinking age that's based on what you're drinking. The Finland-based carrier tells TPG that passengers between the ages of 18 and 21 can only buy drinks onboard that are less than 22% alcohol. That covers most beers and wines. For the hard stuff — drinks that are 22% alcohol or more — Finnair's drinking age is a very American 21.

The bottom line

If you're under 21 and want to drink on an airplane traveling outside the U.S., you're out of luck if you're flying on United, Delta, American or any other U.S.-based airline. But yes, you can find lower drinking ages on some airlines based elsewhere (emphasis on "some;" certain airlines don't serve alcohol at all).

Just be sure to confirm the airline's drinking age beforehand. And have your passport handy in case the flight attendant cards you.

One more tip: Drinking to excess on a plane at any age can lead to trouble . So if you're going to toast 70 years of mile-high drinking, please do so responsibly.

Lufthansa’s New Business Class Cabin Will Be Available on These North America Routes Soon

Its first route with the Allegris product will fly between Munich and Vancouver on an Airbus A350-900 aircraft.

Lufthansa is taking off with its all-new first and business class seats ahead of the busy summer season. On May 1, the first Allegris premium cabins will start flying in the sky on select Lufthansa long-haul routes. The German airline confirmed that its first route with the Allegris product will fly between Munich and Vancouver on an Airbus A350-900 aircraft.  As more Airbus A350s get delivered soon to Lufthansa’s fleet, travelers will be able to experience Allegris on the carrier’s routes from Germany to Toronto, Chicago, and Montreal throughout the summer. The new Allegris seat was first announced in 2017, which promised a sleek new experience for passengers sitting up front. Onboard this Airbus A350, there will be three first-class suites equipped with separate bed and dining areas, marking Lufthansa’s first-ever double bed option designed for two passengers. “Every guest has their own understanding of premium, which is why we focus on maximum individuality and exclusivity,” CEO of Lufthansa, Jens Ritter, said in a statement about the new cabin. “The First Class Suite Plus conveys the feeling of privacy and individuality similar to a hotel room – only at an altitude of eleven kilometers.”

Furthermore, there are 38 business class seats onboard in a 1-2-1 configuration. With direct aisle access and doors that will be able to shut fully, the new Allegris business class will be a significant upgrade from Lufthansa’s current arrangement in a 2-2-2 configuration.  The airline has said the new seats will be rolled out to various aircraft in addition to the Airbus A350, including retrofitting existing Boeing 747 cabins. In addition, future deliveries of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner and Boeing 777-9 deliveries will have these Allegris seats. Travelers who are lucky enough to be flying on any of the initial routes starting May 1 will be notified of their upgraded seats in the new cabin, the airline confirmed. As Lufthansa rolls out more Allegris seats on aircraft, fliers will now be able to see online whether their flight has the new seats three weeks before departure.
