2. Hanimaadhoo International Airport

Also managed by Maldives Airport Company Limited (MACL), this airport is less crowded. Situated in Hanimaadhoo Island in Haa Dhaalu Atoll, the M aldives International Airport has a single runway for both domestic and international flights. Only Maldivian airlines operated here, connecting Trivandrum, India and other Island hopping in Maldives . The airport is quite minimalistic and is about 45 minutes away from the capital. 3. Gan International Airport

Smaller than Hulhule Airport, this airport lies in Gan Island, Addu Atoll. It was first started by the Royal Navy and was then transferred to Addu International Airport Pvt limited. It has two terminals- one for both international and domestic flights and other for Shangri-La’s Resort and Spa guests. Flyme and Maldivian airlines are domestic airlines while SriLankan is the only Cheap International Flights which operate there. Taxis and speedboats are there for easy transportation. A small airport situated in Maamigili Island in Alif Dhaalu Atoll. It was started by Qasim Ibrahim of Villa Group. The airport has a single terminal used by both Flyme Airlines and Chartered Seaplanes. Ferry boats are used to travel to Male Island, which is 108 kilometres away. 6. Dharavandhoo Airport

A primary airport in Dharavandhoo Island, Baa Atoll which was opened by President Mohamed Waheed Hassan in 2012. FlyMe and Maldivian Airlines operates there connecting seven major cities like Male, Ifuru, Hanimaadhoo Island, Kadhdhoo and Dharavandhoo. Necessary facilities like wifi and toilets are present. There is a 24-hour health care center, as well as a fully-stocked pharmacy. There is also an infant and mother care center, free trolley access, baggage storage and wrapping services, free shower rooms, a prayer room, smoking lounge, Internet kiosks, several ATM machines, and even a post office.

The new airport wellness center is the place to head if you want to relax and unwind (some more) before you get on your plane home. This beautiful space is where highly trained spa therapists offer a range of pampering treatments including massages, manicures, and pedicures. If you’re thinking about shopping in Maldives Airport before your flight, then the recently updated shopping area in the airport is sure to impress. Here, you will find over 670 sqm of duty-free shops that offer liquor and tobacco, perfumes and cosmetics, souvenirs, and confectionary. There is also a lovely Spice Shop which offers local herbs, loose teas and coffee sets that makes great gifts to take back home.

If you’re feeling a little peckish pre-flight you can grab a light snack or quick meal at one of the several food outlets. There is also an ice cream parlor, a casual Thai restaurant, as well as a sit-down Dome Male Restaurant that offers European favorites in a cozy atmosphere.

What Airlines Fly to the Maldives?

The Male International airport is served by a surprisingly large number of carriers. There are no direct flights that leave from anywhere in the United States to the Maldives. Some popular stop-over destinations include Dubai, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, and Bangkok.

Speedboat and Seaplane Transfers in the Maldives

Did you know that the Maldives is home to the biggest seaplane departure area in the world? There is a seaplane departure point that is located right next to the main airport. This seaplane area provides the gateway to most of the top Maldives resorts . including the stunning Constance Moofushi ( Click here to oogle over their luxury over water villas ). Some of the main seaplane transfer airlines that depart from that include Atoll Transfer and Trans Maldivian.

After booking your Maldives resort , you will receive details on how to go about booking your transfers. For the majority of the resorts, you will need to hop on a seaplane, while those closer to Hulhule Island may be accessed by speedboat. Seaplane transfers can be rather pricey, and the set amount for a seat on shared seaplane can often be upwards of around $500 per person – and even more during the high season or special holidays. You won’t receive a guaranteed departure time, as all seaplane flight departures and heavily dependant on weather conditions. Instead, you will get a time that you should be at the departure point from.

When you arrive at the airport, there will be a resort member of staff waiting for you with a sign. They will then help to transfer you to the seaplane departure point, so don’t worry about having to find the spot yourself.

Some of the top resorts such as the fabulours all-inclusive  Constance Moofushi have a luxurious seaplane lounge that you can relax in while you wait for your next flight. These lounges will often have shower facilities, as well as free minibars and snacks to help keep hunger at bay.

All shared seaplane transfers will come with a luggage limit allowance. This will vary depending on the airline that you choose to fly with, but typically you are allowed to take around 20kg in checked baggage plus 5kg hand luggage. Excess baggage (for an extra fee) may be allowed if the plane is not full, but always check beforehand.

A seaplane flight is such an experience, and they will probably be one of the highlights of your Maldives adventure. They allow you to soar high above the turquoise shimmering waters, and soak up a birds-eye-view of the tiny palm-fringed islands below. Seaplanes can get pretty cramped though, and all luggage will typically be stored at the back of the plane (even handbags), so be sure to grab your camera out of your bag before you get on. The fact you claim this is “everything you need to know” and completely leave out the Islamic extremism of the Maldives… that all other religions besides Sunni Islam are banned, that the hundreds of islands of the Maldives are under Sharia Law which means being LGBT+ in the Maldives is punishable by 100 lashes and up to eight years in prison, that the Maldives have the highest % per capita of Foreign Extremist Fighters who go to Join ISIS and other Islamic extremist organizations to fight and kill people, that this extremism isn’t just a few bad apples but is within the Government’s leadership (President) and many political parties.

If you travel and spend money in the Maldives you are supporting Islamic Extremism and basic human rights abuses. Period.

For people thinking to transit here – AVOID.

We booked our flight with the intention of spending a day in the Maldives before continuing our journey. Checked up on visas, we get free visas on arrival, filled out that one necessary sary online form, did our research as best as possible… and they won’t let us in because we are staying under 24 hours.

Any hotel reservations/other bookings/intentions of spending money in the city are completely irrelevant.

The fact that we would get an automatic tourist visa if our flight did leave one day later is also irrelevant.

So we are stuck in the airport for 10 hours. With our kids too.

We weren’t the only ones with this issue, but it’s not a well known issue since we the man we booked our snorkeling tour with (Hulmale Water Sports) was kind enough to call us and give us some advice, and he has never heard of this before.

10 hours at this tiny airport is really exhausting. Whole day wasted, money lost, really disappointing that we couldn’t see Male or go to our hotel. Immigration was no help, all the officers were unable to show us where this „rule“ even is online.

We dressed appropriately for a muslim country, long pants for everyone, we brought USD, checked and doublechecked the Imugan forms… no use

The Maldives have lost 5 customers and all of our friends/family members, we will make sure to never travel here again.

Male airport is the main gateway into the Maldives islands for tourists. It is currently the only airport in the country offering international flights.

Maldives Airports – Your Ultimate Guide to Island Hopping

Along the equator in the Indian Ocean, there lies a country that’s made up of 1,190 coral islands. Where time stops so you can enjoy, relax and recuperate in total harmony. That country is none other than Maldives, one of the premier tourist destinations in the world. 

The country has been open to tourism since the early 70’s and started making waves from the get-go, amassing almost 4,000 tourists in 1973. That number has since risen to almost 2 million in 2023. The number of resorts and tourist accommodations have also shot up, with just 17 resorts being built in the late 70’s to 1,220 tourist facilities across the country. This includes 883 guesthouses, 172 resorts, 152 safari vessels and 13 hotels.

These tourist accommodations are spread out all over the Maldives and getting from the airport to your temporary island home has gotten easier with time. And that’s due to the fact that Maldives has opened multiple airports across the country to ease travel. The country, while it is split up, still spans a length of 822 km. In order for you to fully utilise the aero landscape of Maldives, you first have to understand what your options are. So let’s take a look at all the airports you can take advantage of.

Current Airport Landscape  

There are currently 19 airports in Maldives. Five are international airports while the rest serve as domestic airports for internal travel. 

Major International Airports

1. velana international airport (mle).

Velana International Airport was opened on 12th April 1966 and has served as the main international airport of Maldives. The airport went through a few upgrades and name changes to better suit the progress it went through. It is located at North Male’ Atoll, a short ferry ride away from Male’. You can also get to the airport by crossing the bridge connected to the capital Male’.

2. Gan International Airport (GAN)

Gan International Airport bridges the gap between Southern Maldives to the rest of the country, allowing for safer travel across large distances at sea. It also brings the resorts in that area closer to the rest of the country, allowing for easier travel between resorts.

Gan is currently undergoing an expansion and is adding on:

• Cargo and cold storage facilities
• Parking zone
• Control tower
• Road infrastructure
• Fire station

The project is set to finish by 2025 and is being funded by Exim Bank of India, with the contract being handed to Renaatus Projects of India as well. The expansion will be able to tend to an annual 1.5 million passengers, which is also set to boost the socioeconomic growth of the area.

3. Villa International Airport (VAM)

Villa International Airport is located at South Ari Atoll, which is 110 km away from Velana and takes around 30 minutes to get there. The island the airport is built on, Maamigili, is also known as the largest island within the region. 

The airport opened in 2011 and underwent construction to be upgraded from a domestic airport to an international airport in 2013. Upon the opening of Villa International Airport, Villa also revealed to the public Villa Air, also known as Flyme, a local airline set to bring the neighbouring and far out islands closer to the region. 

If you’re a lover of all things marine and you’ve booked your holiday within South Ari Atoll, you’re in luck. The atoll is most known for having a high traffic of manta rays and whale sharks throughout the year. Many dive centres close by offer excursions to try and find these creatures to swim along with. A lot of care goes into these excursions as it’s imperative you keep your distance from these denizens of the deep, even though they are known for being passive creatures. Provoke any creature enough and they’ll react accordingly.

4. Hanimaadhoo International Airport (HAQ)

Hanimaadhoo International Airport is located at Haa Dhaalu Atoll which is located at the northern section of Maldives. When it first opened in 1990, it was made as a domestic airport and was turned into an international one on 2nd February 2012. It connects the northern atolls and the rest of the country and was deemed the source of a better economy and ease of transportation for the people in the area.

In January 2023, the Regional Airports Company (RAC) set out to expand the airport and is set to be finished within 2024. The contractors Somnium London (lead design architect & concept designer) , Meinhardt Group (engineer & program manager) and Studio DRA (local delivery architect & project manager) worked together on the design portion while the JMC Projects (engineering & construction services) won the construction contract in August 2022.

The expansion is set to have the following upgrades:

• Modernised passenger terminal 
• Sea terminal building
• Ancillary buildings (air traffic control tower, aircraft rescue & firefighting block, cargo building, hangar block)
• Airside & landside infrastructure
• 3,000 metre runway
• Fuel farm & jetty
• Sewage treatment & desalination plants
• Ground serving equipment storage facility

5. Maafaru International Airport (NMF)

Maafaru International Airport rests at the southern-end of Noonu Atoll, which is in northern Maldives. It officially opened on 1st December 2019. 

Before the expansion took place, the airport was able to accommodate just 100 passengers and had a 2.2 km runway. The expansion is set to increase passenger accommodation to 300 and lengthen the runway from 2.2 km to 2.85 km. The new passenger terminal also includes CIQ and CIP lounges and vastly increases the size of the terminal to comfortably accommodate the 300 passenger limit.

An Abu Dhabi Fund gave the necessary purse of $60 million USD (MVR 925 million) to get the project rolling and is set to become an economic hub within Noonu Atoll.

Domestic Airports

1. dharavandhoo airport (drv).

Dharavandhoo Airport was opened on 17th October 2012 and is located in Baa Atoll, which is in the southern section of northern atolls. Their departure flights include trips to Male’ (Flyme, Maldivian, Manta Air) , Hanimaadhoo (Maldivian) , Ifuru (Maldivian) and Hoarafushi (Manta Air) .

Dharavandhoo Airport serves as a middle man for tourist transport to nearby resorts, some of them being Seaside Finolhu Baa Atoll Maldives, Vakkaru Maldives and The Westin Maldives Miriandhoo Resort, to name a few. 

Baa Atoll is well known for its marine biodiversity, with a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve by the name of Hanifaru Bay harbouring the marine spectacle. Coral life, fish and everything in between makes this place a natural wonder and is known for being a popular dive site across the country and the world. Hanifaru Bay is also famous for its manta rays and whale shark sightings.

2. Dhaalu Airport (DDD)

Dhaalu Airport is located at the atoll of the same name (Dhaalu Atoll) on Kudahuvadhoo Island. It was opened on 22nd June 2017 and serves as a direct transfer to Kudahuvadhoo. It is 180 km south of Male’, making it a 45 – 50 minute journey by air. Dhaalu Airport is also known as one of the domestically largest airports in Maldives, due to its 1,800 metre long runway.

Dhaalu Airport is one of the airports to stay ahead of the curve in terms of upgrades. It’s the first airport in the country that acquired solar lighting systems for taxiway lighting and the runway edge. There’s also visual aids such as taxiway lighting, wind direction indicator systems and APAPI that are also solar powered. Dhaalu Airport pushes the envelope in terms of energy saving and by extension, environmental conservation. 

Due to the size of the runway, Dhaalu Airport is able to accommodate the ATR-72 and Dash-8 aircraft but more importantly, private jets as well. This adds another layer of economic benefit to the area, with more flights coming in.

3. Fuvahmulah Airport (FVM)

Fuvahmulah Airport is located at Gnaviyani Atoll, which is situated right on the Equatorial Channel. It sits at the southern end of Maldives which is a whopping 500 km from Velana International Airport. It takes 1 hour and 25 minutes to get to Fuvahmulah by air. The airport opened in November 2011.

Fuvahmulah is mostly known for activities in the water: scuba diving, snorkelling, free diving, etc. They have amazing dive centres, excursion points and packages for dive lovers to enjoy. If you want to swim with sharks, mantas, threshers and whale sharks , this is the place to be.

The island itself is also a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve due to its two freshwater lakes, historical monuments and beach environments. The island has the remnants of a buddhist temple (Havitta) and islamic mosque (Gemmiskiy) due to the rich historical events that occurred during the countries infancy.

Fuvahmulah Airport is set for an upgrade, with the following expansion plans announced in January 2024:

• Re-orientation of the runway
• Expansion of the runway to accommodate jets
• Expansion of the apron to create jet space for parking
• Establishment of jet fueling facilities
• Establishment of an aviation school

The runway is currently at 1,200 metres and is projected to be anywhere between 1,600 and 1,800 metres when the project is finished. This is in an effort to accommodate jets to increase tourism traffic, which will bring about a net positive to the economy of Gnaviyani Atoll. Fuvahmulah itself also made efforts in 2016 to increase its visibility as a prime tourist destination by launching the Visit Fuvahmulah website, which is packed with information on everything Fuvahmulah!

4. Ifuru Airport (IFU)

Ifuru Airport is located in Northern Maalhosmadhulu Atoll. It takes 40 – 50 minutes to travel from Velana International Airport to Ifuru with a travel distance of 178 km. The airport is connected to Maldivian airports such as Hanimaadhoo International Airport, Maafaru International Airport and Dharavandhoo Airport as well. The airport was later made to serve Ifuru Island Maldives, a resort that’s on Ungoofaru Island, with it initially being just a domestic airport. This is the same island the airport is on but now does domestic travel to other islands as well which would explain its runway spanning 1,200 metres in length.

This airport serves as a connector to other major airports for both tourists and locals alike. For locals that stay close-by to Ungoofaaru, travel became that much easier when the airport opened on 29th May 2015.

Other Domestic Airports

1. kaadedhdhoo airport (kdm).

Located in Gaafu Dhaalu (South Huvadhu) Atoll, which is the most southern end of Maldives, Kaadedhdhoo Airport was opened for business on 10th December 1993. The airport serves as a domestic connector to the rest of the country from the southernmost islands of Maldives.

It takes around 1 hour and 15 minutes to get to Kaadedhdhoo Airport from Velana International Airport. Operating airlines at the airport include Island Aviation, Flyme and Trans Maldivian Airways. It has a runway of 1,200 metres and is already in the crosshairs of the government to undergo renovations for further improvement to international standards.

If you’re a dive enthusiast, there is a place called Madaveli close by, which is a shipwreck diving site and Vaadhoo Island, known as the Sea of Stars , due to its bioluminescent beach. Both these locations are must-see attractions due to its eye-opening beauty.

2. Kadhdhoo Airport

Kadhdhoo Airport opened on 10th December 1986 and resides in Laamu Atoll (also known as Haddhunamthi Atoll) which is located at the southern end of Maldives as well. It is located 256 km from Velana International Airport, with a 50 minute flight time attached to it.

The airport has one runway which spans 1,220 metres in length, perfect for domestic aircraft. They have flights to Dharavandhoo (Flyme) , Gan (Flyme, Maldivian) , Kaadedhdhoo (Flyme, Maldivian) , Kooddoo (Flyme, Maldivian) , Maamigili (Flyme) and Male’ (Flyme, Maldivian) .

There are a few accommodation options that offers shuttle services from the airport, such as:

3. Kooddoo Airport (GKK)

Kooddoo Airport was first opened on 10th September 2012 to serve the atoll it inhabits, which is Huvadhu Atoll. The airport is 45 minutes from Velana International Airport via air. It was brought to fruition by Singaporean property development company Bonvests Holdings Ltd.

Since the initial opening, Kooddoo Airport has received some upgrades in the form of a VIP Lounge and a lengthened runway (1,200 metres to 1,800 metres) for larger and private jets, to accommodate for the influx of tourists.

4. Thimarafushi Airport (TMF)

Thimarafushi Airport is located at Thaa Atoll (also known as Kolhumadulu Atoll) and was opened on 3rd September 2013. It has a runway length of 1,200 metres and was built for domestic flights, connecting the Thaa Atoll region to the rest of the country. The atoll is located 221 km south of the capital Male’.

The airport went through one construction phase and another is on hold. The first one was finished on 26th May 2014 and was completed by MTCC. Phase Two has been on hold since its inception in December 2013. In April 2022, Island Aviation Services Limited made an announcement stating their desire to upgrade Thimarafushi Airport. The upgrades are to be made to the accommodation block, boarding gate checking area, a fire and rescue building, a passenger terminal office area, a security gate and fence. 

The airport has the airline Maldivian do trips to the capital for those who want to visit. The flights are always on Thursdays and Saturdays each week.

5. Hoarafushi Airport (HRF)

Hoarafushi Airport is located at Haa Alif Atoll, which is at the northernmost end of the country. It is 318 km from Velana International Airport and takes around 1 hour and 15 minutes to travel from point to point. 

Hoarafushi Airport offers flights to Male’ (Maldivian, Manta Air) and Dharavandhoo (Manta Air) so if you feel like checking out what North Male’ Atoll or Baa Atoll has to offer, you have the option to do so! 

The airport has opened up avenues of economic growth for the atoll. For example, the atoll has within it the island of Utheemu, which holds great historical significance to Maldives. Visits have been made easier for both tourists coming in and for locals who want to go south to Male’ and beyond.

6. Funadhoo Airport (FND)

Funadhoo Airport is located at Shaviyani Atoll and is a domestic airport that connects the north-north-east section of Maldives to the rest of the country. The airport opened on 1st February and has scheduled direct flights via Maldivian Airlines. There are three flights a week on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.

The runway of the airport spans 1,200 metres, perfect for domestic landing and takeoff. The airport is close to some exciting luxury resorts so if you’re booking your holiday for any of the following resorts, know that you’ll have an easy time transiting:

7. Faresmaathoda Airport (FMT)

Faresmaathoda Airport is located in Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll and is a 1 hour and 10 minute flight from Velana International Airport, with the distance spanning 450 km. It was inaugurated on 15th March 2023 and is one of the few airports that allows night flights.

The airport is known for its almost heart-like, near diamond-like shapes upon getting to the terminal. A spectacle to look at at nighttime, Faresmaathoda helps connect the near southern tip of the atoll to the rest of Maldives. The airport has a 7,543 sqm shoulder runway, allowing for comfortable taxiing, landing and takeoff.

The atoll sees a respectable amount of tourists rush to swim in its untouched seas and dive with their denizens. The beaches and islands themselves are also as pure as it can get.

8. Kulhudhuffushi Airport (HDK)

Kulhudhuffushi Airport is located at Haa Dhaalu Atoll, known for its underwater beauty and diving points and has a reef extending 35 kilometres. The airport had its first flights commence on 9th August 2019 and has a runway length of 1,220 metres. 

The Regional Airports Company Limited (RACL) has issued a bid to expand and redevelop the airport on 6th January 2024, with the inclusion of a 11,345 sqf passenger terminal, passenger terminal shading to stave off the heat, improvements to the current design and additions to the current facilities to improve passenger experiences. There is no expected end date as of yet.

9. Maavarulu Airport (RUL)

Maavarulu Airport is located at Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll and serves to bridge the gap in the atoll itself and the rest of the country. Multiple airports in one atoll were built to serve the public in their transportation of goods, their services and for general travel. The airport opened on 4th July 2020 and has scheduled flights (via Maldivian) that head to Gan, Kaadedhdhoo, Kooddoo and Male’.

Maavarulu Airport looked at Faaresmaathoda Airport and followed in their footsteps and began operating night flights at the tail end of August / beginning of September 2023.

10. Madivaru Airport (LMV)

Madivaru Airport is located at Lhaviyani Atoll and takes a cool 25 minutes to get from Madivaru Airport to Velana International Airport. There are three flights a day allowing for multiple sets of tourists and locals to travel between the islands. It has a 1,200 metre runway and serves 80 people in its VIP Lounge. It can also accommodate four planes at a time for smooth and consistent flights.

The airport started operating on 18th February 2022 and has since then seen interest for an upgrade to international airport standards a year later. The following resorts are close to the airport for ease of transit:

Snorkeling! Personally, I would never go to a resort without a house reef as I would be missing out on what is the best thing about the Maldives — the underwater world! The amount and variety of fish are incredible, and for first-timers being able to swim with sharks and turtles is such an amazing experience (in fact it never gets less amazing!).

Our biggest priority when choosing an island is the accessibility and quality of the house reef/snorkeling. Another must-do is watching the sunrise and sunset.

The underwater world is, of course, my number one, but watching dolphins play at sunrise is probably my number two.

For us, the Maldives is all about snorkeling. Yes, it's stunningly beautiful and totally idyllic, but what makes it utterly unique is the underwater world that is SO accessible and varied.

Swimming with the fishes (sorry, couldn't resist) in the Maldives is a life-changing experience, so far removed from most people's day-to-day life that it has the power to change your whole perspective. For many of us, there is no going back — a holiday that isn't shared with a shark or ten is just not worth the bother.

Have to say it's the diving for me, amazing corals and fish, and if you time, the months you travel and location the opportunity to dive with Manta, whale sharks or 200+ sharks at the mouth of a channel is amazing. With Fuvahmulah, the addition of tiger sharks, oceanic manta, hammerheads, and threshers makes this a one-of-a-kind location for diving. Throw in the remoteness, and on a clear night, unbelievable skies, it's a paradise hard to replicate.

What is the best way to get there?

Velana International Airport (VIA) is the only international airport in the Maldives. It offers several flights to/from Asia, Europe, and the Middle East. From its location on Hulhule Island near the capital island of Male, you can grab your (usually pre-arranged) speedboat, seaplane or ferry to your destination island.

Do I need a visa?

Though a 30-day tourist visa is given to all travelers upon arrival, there are certain entry requirements, such as a passport that’ll be valid for at least six months.

When is the best time to visit?

It doesn’t get much more tropical than the Maldives! And the best time to visit the Maldives is January through March, though prices may be higher this time of year. Prices are typically cheaper May through November during the rainy season. The average daily temperatures most times of the year are highs of 32 C (89 F) and lows of 26 C (78 F).

These high-speed boats are a common way to get around the islands, especially to/from the hotels and airports, but they can be expensive.

These get you to the more far-flung islands in the Maldives if you want to island-hop, but these, too, can be expensive.

Public ferries run between the inhabited islands, but schedules are often unreliable and can vary depending on the time of year. Visit here for more info.

Are there local customs I should know?

The legal drinking age in the Maldives is 18.

Most residents speak English, but learning a few words of the national language Dhivehi is appreciated: “Assalaamu Alaikum” (hello); Ran’galhu, shukuriyaa (fine, thank you); Shukuriyaa (thank you).

Environment

Coral reefs are the foundation of the Maldives, so it is very important to not disturb, touch, remove, or stand on its coral reefs when diving or snorkeling. And never leave garbage behind.

Always greet people

A courteous, formal greeting in French, “Bonjour, Monsieur/Madame,” is always appreciated — this includes shop attendants, wait staff, hotel staff, drivers.

Don’t talk loudly in public

It is considered rude and ugly.

Don’t expect fast service

Sales assistants in shops or wait staff in restaurants won’t approach you straight away — giving people time and space is an important part of French culture. Also, don’t expect wait staff to give you the bill when your meal is finished, you will have to ask for it.

Made up of nearly 1,200 coral islands strung north to south in the Indian Ocean, the Maldives is one of the most popular beach destinations on the planet. Known for world-class diving, miles of empty white-sand beaches, and resorts oozing with luxury, the Maldives isn’t always the most budget-friendly destination (though bargains can be found). But if you’re looking for mind-blowing sunsets, sugary sand, and the most turquoise water you’ve ever seen, break out your credit card and book a flight. Read on for our complete Maldives visitor’s guide, and learn the best places to stay, eat, dive, and explore in this spectacular tropical locale.

Planning Your Trip

Best Time To Visit: In true tropical island style, temperatures in the Maldives average 83 degrees Fahrenheit (28 degrees Celsius) year-round, and there are only two main seasons; dry and wet. The dry season comes in fall and winter, from November through April, with temperatures ranging from 77 degrees Fahrenheit (25 degrees Celsius) to 89 degrees Fahrenheit (32 degrees Celsius). The low, monsoon season runs from May through October, with the wettest month usually falling in June. Temperatures in the rainy season range from 77 degrees Fahrenheit (25 degrees Celsius) to 87 degrees Fahrenheit (30 degrees Celsius).

Getting Around: As an island nation spread across hundreds of miles of the ocean, it’s only natural that boats are the country’s transport mainstay, so prepare your sea legs (or Dramamine). For those staying near the capital or attempting a more budget holiday, ferries are offered between some of the more populated islands in the Malé Atoll capital area. Speedboat taxis can be hired for short-distance island hopping, and private resort speedboats whisk guests away to properties in the immediate vicinity. For resorts set in distant atolls, further transport will be via seaplane or a domestic flight to one of the more far-flung airports followed by speedboat transfer to the resort.

Travel Tip: Many visitors to the Maldives must travel by seaplane to reach their final destination, so it’s important to note that seaplanes only operate during daylight hours. If your flight arrives after dark, consider staying at a nearby hotel on either Hulhulé Island or in nearby Malé city.

Things to Do

This is a country surrounded by water, water, and more water, so it's only natural that water sports have emerged as the leading activity in the Maldives. Landlubbers can bask in the sun on deserted sandbanks, or perhaps spend the day in one of the dozens of spas dotted at upmarket resorts throughout the nation.

• Diving: Some of the world's best diving can be found in the Maldives' coral atolls. Spot whale sharks and manta rays from May through November in the Baa Atoll UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, or dive deep with octopi and reef sharks to explore some of the area's famed shipwrecks.
• Water sports: Snorkeling, stand-up paddle, surfing, windsurfing, sailing, kayaking, and every other water sport imaginable are available year-round. Most resorts include access to non-motorized water sports equipment, and the larger populated islands generally have water sports rental facilities.
• Spa experiences: The Maldives is home to some of the most indulgent hotel spas in the world. These havens of tranquility offer everything from Thai massages set in overwater villas, to underwater treatment rooms, to complete detox, rejuvenation, or restoration packages. Most resorts have a spa on the property, so it's only a matter of choosing which will best suit your budget and relaxation desires.
• Nothing: Perhaps the ultimate activity of all in the Maldives is doing absolutely nothing. This definition of "nothing" means laying on a sun lounger on one of the country's best beaches , staring into the sea-green distance while sipping ice-cold coconut water and reading a novel.

What to Eat and Drink

Maldivian cuisine borrows mainly from India and Sri Lanka, which both highlight hot, spicy flavors. But in the Maldives, what you’ll eat largely depends on where you stay. High-end resorts offer a variety of a la carte local and international fare in a host of luxurious settings, including in overwater and underwater restaurants .

Budget resorts are more likely to provide buffet meals with both Western and Asian options for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. There are also small local eateries and cafes on many of the inhabited islands, purveying specialties such as fish cakes, soups, and curries.

Alcohol is prohibited in the Maldives (except for tourists at licensed hotels and resorts), so don’t expect to wash down your curry with a beer in any of the local establishments. Many of the more upmarket resorts, however, have full bars, and even wine cellars with hundreds of vintages to choose from.

Where to Stay

If visitors stay in the city of Malé, it’s rarely for more than one night, as there’s not much going on in the capital other than commerce, a few restaurants, and a museum or two. Most visitors stay in one of the dozens of resorts, which are often set on private islands in one of the country’s myriad coral atolls.

Accommodations vary widely in the Maldives, from rustic local guesthouses to some of the world’s most expensive resorts. If you’re on a budget, there are a handful of guesthouses and small hotels in many of the inhabited islands, such as in the North Malé Atoll or Ari Atoll.

Getting There

The gateway to the Maldives is Velana International Airport (MLE), formerly Malé International Airport, which is set on an island adjacent to the capital city of Malé. Upon arrival, the best transport mode depends on where you’re staying. A bridge connects the airport (on Hulhulé Island) to adjacent Malé city, or there are taxis, speedboat taxis, and regularly scheduled (though not always on time) ferries.

The Maldives’ seafaring past and Indian Ocean location means the remote country has been heavily influenced by its closest neighbors, India and Sri Lanka, as well as Indonesia, Malaysia, and Africa. Many visitors will only see the surroundings of their chosen resort, but the Maldives possesses cultural treasures on the local islands and in Malé that are also worth exploring.

• One of the oldest mosques in the Maldives is the Malé Hukuru Miskiy, or Old Friday Mosque, which was built from ornately carved coral in 1658. The mosque is set on Hulhulé Island, an easy taxi ride from the airport.
• The Maldives National Museum in Malé is a compact yet illuminating repository for the country’s prized artifacts. Displays range from ancient to modern times and contain everything from religious carvings to whale skeletons to lacquered wood boxes handmade by Maldivian craftspeople.
• Across Sultan Park from The Maldives National Museum is The National Art Gallery. Established in 1999, this relatively new museum houses collections of Maldivian art from both past and present.

Money-Saving Tips

• May through October is monsoon season in much of Southeast Asia, and the Maldives is no exception. Although summer can sometimes bring heavy rainfall and severe storms, most often there are only afternoon showers, and risking a visit during these monsoon months (particularly June, considered the wettest month) means deep discounts compared to visiting the country during the peak season.
• Since alcohol is heavily taxed and marked-up in the Maldives, a drinks bill at the end of your trip can pose a hefty surprise. To keep the holiday stress-free and the umbrella drinks coming, consider choosing an all-inclusive package if you plan to indulge in adult libations during your stay.

Paradise personified. Heaven on earth. Screensaver goals. The Maldives has earned a lot of monikers since it opened to tourists in the 1970s.

Over the past 50 years, it’s become known as a honeymoon hot spot, a family-friendly getaway and one of the world’s most coveted vacation destinations.

And while it may seem like a lot of hype for one small, spread-out island nation in the Indian Ocean, the Maldives really does live up to it. From coconut-fringed islands and colorful reefs to warm smiles and even warmer curries, it’s often a once-in-a-lifetime getaway for travelers. Whether you’re heading off to a ritzy private island resort or a more affordable local island, there’s a handful of things to know before departure. Here are our top tips and best advice ahead of a trip to the Maldives.

1. Plan for at least 5 nights in the Maldives

For all travelers, it takes a plane ride or three to land in this far-flung slice of paradise. So, while a weekend to the Maldives may work for travelers based in Asia, five nights will suffice if you’re crunched for time and budget. And if neither is an issue, plan for at least a week to fully unwind and embrace island life.

2. You can get around via seaplane or speedboat

When choosing your island resort, pay attention to whether it’s reachable by seaplane or speedboat. Although seaplane transfers give picture-worthy views of the pearl-shaped atolls, they often cost much more. And be aware there’s a 25kg (55lbs) total luggage per person allowance on seaplanes. So, if you’re looking to save money, pick a resort closer to Male that you can transfer to via speedboat. You can also take a domestic flight to another atoll in the Maldives and a speedboat to the resort.

3. Island-hopping is doable (and encouraged)

Many travelers spend weeks poring over which private island resort is the best for them, but you don’t have to choose one. Beach bums can split their time between resorts. You’ll need to travel back to Male airport, where a representative from your next resort will meet you and transfer you there via seaplane or speedboat. If the resorts are close together, you can charter a speedboat from one resort to another.

4. Aim to land in Male in the morning

If you’re staying at a resort accessible by seaplane transfer, arriving in the morning is crucial. Once the sun sets, seaplanes stop flying, so you’d need to stay overnight in Male or Hulhumale to wait for the next seaplane. If your resort is accessible via a speedboat or water taxi, arriving at night is less of an issue, but the Maldives scenery is so stunning you’ll want to be able to see it.

5. Understand “island time”

These tiny private islands operate by their own rules, including their own time zones. Some resorts will ask guests to set their clocks to “island time,” an hour forward to give them an extra hour of sunlight for snorkeling or swimming .

6. Stock up well (there are no grocery stores for tourists)

There are no grocery stores or Walmarts on these tiny private islands. So, triple-check that you’ve got everything you need, including reef-safe sunscreen to help protect one of the Maldives’ most precious natural habitats. Every resort has a boutique store where you can pick up necessities you may have forgotten, but prices are often insanely expensive.

7. Familiarize yourself with the prohibited items list

The Maldives is a devout Muslim country with strict rules. So travelers entering cannot bring alcohol, pornographic materials, pork products or idols of worship  among other things . If anything prohibited is found, it will be taken away on arrival.

8. Local islands are a bargain but come with caveats

The local islands are a great and safe option for travelers on a budget and those not willing to shell out thousands for an island getaway. Small Maldivian-run guesthouses offer a much more intimate look at daily life, but there are a few things to know first. Alcohol is illegal on local islands, so don’t expect to enjoy a beer by the beach. Travelers must also dress conservatively on local islands by covering their shoulders and knees. Women don’t need to cover their heads, but wearing a bathing suit outside of designated “bikini beaches” is not allowed and could land you with a fine.

9. There’s no standard tipping etiquette

Tipping on top of your restaurant bill at the resort is not expected because a 10% tip is already included. However, if you want to leave something for your favorite server at the end of your stay that is more than OK. Guests can also write a review calling out their favorite team members; management often rewards staff for stellar service. Leaving a tip ranging from US$2 to US$10 per day for housekeeping is also customary. And if you have a butler, tipping 10% of the cost of your stay is a good rule.

10. You can pay in USD

The local currency is the Maldivian rufiya, but US dollars are also accepted. You can get some local currency from the ATM at the airport on arrival. If you want to exchange money for rufiya, you can do so in the airport at the Bank of Maldives Foreign Exchange. Keep your receipt with you so you can change anything extra back into your local currency when you leave.

11. Resort doctors can help with health concerns

The vast majority of travelers will go straight from the plane to a private island resort. Should you have any health issues during your stay, the on-island doctor will be able to assist you.

12. There is a “green tax” for tourists

Every tourist is charged a government tax to stay in a hotel, liveaboard or guesthouse. The tax is US$6 per day unless you’re staying in a guesthouse on a local island with 50 or fewer registered rooms, then the tax is US$3 per day. The charge will be included in your overall bill.

13. Sustainability initiatives are everywhere 

As the world’s lowest-lying country, the Maldives is under serious threat from climate change. Nearly every resort has sustainability initiatives, which might include coral regeneration, onsite gardens, turtle rehabilitation and/or unique mosquito trapping methods instead of chemical spraying. A few of the more sustainable resorts to choose from are Soneva , Six Senses , Four Seasons , Kudadoo and Gili Lankanfushi . Beware of greenwashing , where organizations claim sustainability credentials that aren't as impactful as they suggest.

Maldives, the most dispersed country on the planet with 1,192 islands spread over roughly 90,000 square kilometres, already has 15 airports, including five international airports. Honeymoon islands with white sandy beaches and beautiful blue lagoons surrounded by turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean pleasing to the eye already on the airplane board before landing at one of the airports of the Maldives.

Over a million tourists from across the globe visit the Indian Ocean island nation every year to holiday in one of the 120 resorts and 300 plus guesthouses located in all corners of the country. The multi-billion dollar tourism industry, which is the country’s main economic activity, relies heavily on the domestic transport infrastructure, especially air travel.

Good to know: If you are planning a budget trip to the Maldives - do not rush to book air tickets online on the airliners' websites (Maldivian or Manta Air or Fly Me) - contact the staff of the guesthouse or hotel where you are staying, they will book flight tickets for you about twice cheaper.

There are 14 airports currently operating in the Maldives. These include the international airports from the Velaana International Airport, Hanimaadhoo International Airport, Gan International Airport, Villa International Airport, Maafaru International Airport, and domestic airports at Baa Dharavandhoo, Raa Ifuru, Th Thimarafushi, Dhaalu Kudahuvadhoo, Gaaf Alif Kooddoo, Gaaf Dhaal Kaadedhoo, Laamu Kadhdhoo, Haa Dhaal Kulhudhuhfushi, and Gn. Fuvahmulah airport.

The government announced the opening of 5 new airports in the Maldives this year. These include the newly opened Kulhudhuhfushi airport, Maafaru airport, and airports at Gaaf Alif Maavarulu, Shaviyani Funadhoo and Lhaviyani Madivaru.

Malé International Airport (Velana, MLE)

Better known as Malé, Velana International Airport (VIA) is the main air gate of the Maldives. The airport is located on Hulhule Island in 10 minutes by ferry from the  capital of Male.  The airport is served daily by over 30 international flights, including Etihad Airways, Aeroflot, Air Asia, Emirates, Sri Lankan, Singapore Airlines, Bangkok airways and also domestic flights and seaplanes to other islands of the Maldives archipelago.  READ MORE

Gan International Airport (GAN)

Gan International Airport is located in Addu (Seenu) Atoll on Gan Island and is the main gateway to Southern Maldives. Private jets use this airport to get to nearby luxury resorts.

The Ministry of Economic Development has begun the tender for the development of Gan International Airport on 4th October 2022. The project entails the development of the terminal with the capacity to cater to 1.5 million passengers per annum. The project is further looking to develop shopping, dining, lounge, cargo, ARFF, and other facilities. The Ministry of Economic Development aims to start the groundwork for the project in late 2022. As of now, only two airlines fly to Gan International Airport including Sri Lankan Airlines and national airline Maldivian.

Villa international airport (maamigili, vam).

Located in  South Ari atoll , Maamigili Airport was designed by Maldives magnate Ibrahim Qasim, a native of Maamigili, as a project to develop the island’s tourism infrastructure. The airport is managed by Villa Group, which also owns two resorts located on neighboring islands. The opening of the airport coincided with the creation of the new Villa Air (Flyme) airline that is one of the main air carriers in the Maldives. With an excess of 2 m above sea level, the airport has one runway is 1,800 m long. The only airport in Alif-Dhaalu Atoll, Maamigili is the inhabited island with a great budget accomodation optios. On 2020 the Maamigili's airport runway will be upgraded for emergency landings.

Hanimaadhoo international airport (haq).

Hanimaadhoo International Airport is located on one of the inhabited islands of  Haa Dhaalu Atoll , and geographically is part of the Thiladhummathi Atoll in the northern part of the Maldives. Today, it is the new Maldives International Airport with daily domestic flights from Malé and Dharavandhoo airport (DRV), and international flights from Trivaandram, India since 2013. The length of the runway is 1220 meters. For tourists, Hanimaadhoo Airport provides access to the northernmost atolls of the Maldives; Haa Alifu and Haa Dhaalu atolls. Plans to expand the new airport in the Maldives include the construction of a new terminal and the extension of the runway capable of receiving long-haul aircraft. Maldivian and Fly Me aircraft fly daily from Male to Hanimadu.

Maafaru international airport (nmf).

The newly developed airport in  Noonu atoll , Maafaru was officially opened in august 2018. With a 2.2-kilometre runway capable of accommodating the biggest commercial planes, the A320 and the Boeing 737, Maafaru Airport is designed to be a part of the Abu Dhabi fund project as an ultra-luxury tourism zone. A city hotel, passenger terminal and jet parking facilities will also be developed at the airport. The northern atoll is home to high-end resorts such as  Soneva Jani , Velaa Private Island,  Cheval Blanc Randheli  and Sun Siyam Irufushi.

In 2020 Maafaru International Airport has installed a technologically advanced border control system, facilitating easier travel for tourists through the airport. The airport is also geared up for the “new normal” with an in-house PCR lab, funded by international resort chain Soneva Group, which operates a luxury tourist resort near Maafaru. The airport is also equipped with thermal cameras, glass partitions at service counters, and social distancing markers.

Dharavandhoo airport (drv).

Dharavandhoo is one of the most populated islands of  Baa Atoll , the only UNESCO Biosphere Reserve surrounded by crystall clear waters and world-class dive sites such as Dharavandhoo Thila and Hanifaru Bay. These protected area provides a safe environment for an abundant marine life, including  manta rays  and whale sharks, and are well known among divers around the world. Dhaalu airport (ddd).

Dhaalu Airport is a regional domestic airport located on the island of Kudahuvadhoo in  Dhaalu Atoll  in the Maldives. The newly developed state-of-the-art domestic airport is built entirely on 63 hectares of reclaimed land and features a runway of 1,800 metres allowing it to accommodate Dash-8 and ATR-72 aircraft as well as large private jets. Start from 2020, Dhaalu Airport can handle and process long range jets up to 111 feet in length, with 96 hours’ notification required to arrange a private international landing and departure, including immigration, customs and legislated health checks and requirements for arriving passengers. With daily flights to/from Male, Dhaalu Airport is the first airport in Maldives to make extensive use of solar airfield lighting. 

The airport in Maldives’ southern Dhaalu Atoll now offers the ultimate convenience for private jet guests. For passengers there is a VIP lounge, shop and restaurant at the airport. Kudahuvadhoo island  is also suited for budget travellers with a some guest houses. 

With the recent authorisation of Dhaalu Airport to handle direct international private jet arrivals and departures to and from the archipelago, arriving at Niyama Private Islands Maldives has just become the swiftest and safest arrival experience in the country.

Fuvahmulah airport (fvm).

Fuvahmulah Airport is located on the island-atoll of Fuvahmulah in the Gnaviyani Atoll in the Maldives, and was opened in late 2011. The 1100-meter long runway is served by Maldivian and FlyMe domestic flights from / to Male, Hanimaadhoo (HAQ) and Gan.

Kooddoo Airport (GKK)

Kooddoo Airport, located on the island of Kooddoo in  Gaafu Alifu atoll , was initially opened on September 10, 2012 with twice daily service from the main Velana International Airport by flagship carrier Maldivian.

In 2018, Kooddoo Airport reopened after a major upgrade to accommodate narrow-body airliners and private jets and the runway has been extended as much as possible. Along with the extended runway, a new lounge serving business class and VIP passengers, and a dedicated harbour have also been developed.

The new runway of the airport measures 1,800 metres in length, and is able to accommodate Airbus A320 and Boeing 737 aircrafts as well as all categories of private jets.

Funadhoo is a domestic airport located on the island of Funadhoo in Shaviyani Atoll, Maldives. The country’s national airline, Maldivian air commenced scheduled direct flights to Funadhoo island in Shaviyani atoll on February 3, 2020.

Faresmaathoda airport.

The domestic airport being developed on Gaafu Dhaalu atoll, Faresmaathoda is now 85% completed. The airport is being developed by connecting small forest areas within the Faresmaathoda lagoon and reclaiming 19.9 hectares of land. Development of the airport began in early 2021, and is scheduled to be completed in February 2023.

The project includes a sub-base and subgrade development for a 1,200 meter-runway, apron, fire pad, and fire road, as well as a fire building and airport terminal. According to MTCC, the airport’s runway, apron and taxiway are almost completed. The key feature being the state-of-art heart-shaped terminal. The architecture and style of the terminal is said to reflect a modern character.

A brief history of Velana International Airport

Velana International Airport is the main gateway to the Maldives and is today celebrating its 55th anniversary. Let’s take a brief look at the history of VIA.

Hulhulé Airport

The very first days of VIA dates back to the early 1960s when a 1000m runway was built on a strip of cleared land in the middle of Hulhulé by the British. Royal New Zealand Airforce was the first operator to land an aircraft to the airport on 19th October 1960. Air Ceylon operated the first commercial flight on 19th April 1962.

VIA saw a new beginning in 1964 as the government of Maldives began construction of the airport. Many locals engaged in the construction of the airport as on the first day alone over 108 volunteers participated in the project and 1563.08 Maldivian Rufiya were donated. The slotted steel runway was upgraded to a new and improved 2840m asphalt runway.

As the construction was completed, the new ‘Hulhulé Airport’ was officially opened on 12th April 1966 by former President Mr. Ibrahim Nasir.

A steady traffic growth started as a result of the expansion of the tourism sector in the 1970s. The first national airline, Air Maldives commenced operations with two Convair 440 landing at Hulhulé Airport for the first time on 9th October 1974.

Male’ International Airport.

Hulhulé Airport was once again upgraded with improved infrastructure to manage the high flow of traffic and was officially opened as ‘Male’ International Airport’ by the former president Mr. Maumoom Abdul Gayyoom on 11th November 1981.

On 1st January 1994, Maldives Airports Company Ltd (MACL) was formed to operate and manage the Male' International Airport which is governed by the board of directors appointed by the President of the Maldives.

The 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami

The 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami occurred at 00:58:53 UTC on 26 December, with an epicentre off the west coast of northern Sumatra, Indonesia. In the Maldives all islands except for 9 were hit by the tsunami. 82 people were killed and 24 people were reported missing and presumed dead.

The tsunami hit the Male’ International Airport without any warning with waves that rushed up over the runway and entered the main terminal. The height of the tsunami striking the airport was more than 6ft approximately. Two-thirds of the airport island was flooded and the runway was out of operation for approximately 10 hours resulting from debris and detritus due to the flooding.

There were several aircraft on the tarmac with three seaplane on the water taxing and one seaplane on approach for landing. As the telecommunications had collapsed, communication between airport, resorts and tour operators were impossible. Initially there was chaos in the airport with hundreds of traumatized passengers as they were not ready nor fully equipped to handle such a distaster.

Ibrahim Nasir International Airport

In 2010, GMR Group won the bid for privatization along with the development of the airport and its operation for 25 years. By the end of 2010, MACL officially handed to the newly formed GMR Malé International Airport Ltd.

GMIAL announced that the development plans included reclaiming land, construction of a new terminal with a separate cargo terminal, etc. By 2011 the airport was officially renamed as the Ibrahim Nasir International Airport in memory of the 2nd president of the Maldives.

However, the GMR development project faced numerous delays and in 2012, the government declared that the agreement was valid ab initio and on 27 November 2012 gave GMIAL a deadline of seven days to 'evict the airport'. MACL was reinstated and the airport was handed over by GMR on 7th December.

Velana International Airport

On 1st January 2017, the airport was once again rebranded to Velana International Airport, referring to the family household name of President Ibrahim Nasir, and a new expansion projection began which include a new runway, new passenger and cargo terminal, new seaplane terminal, and etc.

On 18 September 2018, VIA opened its new 3,400m runway, and the very first test aircraft, an Etihad Airbus A380 landed on 26th June 2019.

The foundation work of the new passenger terminal was completed in December 2019 which is designed to serve 7.3 million passengers. The building will also feature aero boarding bridges, baggage handling systems, retail spaces, food and beverage outlets, and lounges.

The airport will have a new 37,000m² fuel farm located on the northwest side of the airport. The fuel farm will have the capacity to hold 45 million liters of Jet A1 fuel, 100,000l of petrol, and one million liters of diesel. A fuel hydrant system is also being installed to increase safety and reduce service time for the airlines.

Just in 2019, Velana International Airport has handled 4.8 million passengers, 54,000 flight movements, and 64,649t of cargo. VIA is the hub for the national airline Maldivian and the largest seaplane operator in the world, Trans Maldivian Airways.

As of April 2021, VIA is handling 24 international scheduled flight operations along with 7 international charter flight operations to the Maldives with the top ten airlines having operated 3,540 flights carrying over 264, 641 amidst the global shut down in air travel due to the COVID19.

Maldives Bans Israeli Passport Holders From Entering Tourist Hotspot Over Ongoing War

The Maldives will bar Israeli passport holders from entering the country as public anger in the predominantly Muslim nation rises over the war in Gaza.

In a statement on June 2, the office of President Mohamed Muizu said the cabinet has decided to amend existing laws to prevent Israelis from entering the tourist hotspot. A cabinet subcommittee will be established to oversee these efforts.

Mr. Muizu’s office added that it will also appoint a special envoy to assess Palestinian needs and set up a fundraising campaign.

The fundraiser will be launched with the help of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) to conduct a nationwide rally under the slogan “Maldivians in Solidarity with Palestine,” the president said.

Israel Issues Travel Advisory

“For Israeli citizens already in the country, it is recommended to consider leaving, because if they find themselves in distress for any reason, it will be difficult for us to assist,” the ministry said in a statement.

The Maldives is a popular travel destination in the Indian Ocean known for its luxury resorts and secluded sandy white beaches. Annually, more than 1.5 million tourists visit the island nation.

A total of 528 Israel nationals have visited the Maldives in the first four months of this year, dropping from 4,644 during the same period in 2023, according to data by the Maldives government.

In addition to the Maldives, Israeli passport holders have also not been allowed to enter Algeria, Bangladesh, Brunei, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Syria, and Yemen. These countries had already banned Israeli passport holders before the Israel-Hamas war.
