About Mission Trips to Egypt

It is entirely possible that Egypt is the oldest tourist destination on the planet. Even the ancient Greeks and Romans traveled to this fascinating land to see the Pyramids, the temples and the Nile. It is ironic that the people who once worshipped “Ra” (the sun-god) have endured centuries of spiritual darkness. From Pharaonic dominance, to Islamic rule, now we, as Christians, must learn to embrace our Muslim half-brothers and half-sisters in Egypt with God’s love and tell them of the saving power of Jesus Christ.

Ministry in Egypt

Special outreach.

Team members are encouraged to learn as much as possible about this area of the world, their culture, and their religion previous to the trip. Global Infusion will be providing each person with adequate and approved reading material. Once in-country, there are a variety of outreaches that allow us to show the love of God to our Muslim brothers and sisters. We frequently engage in teaching and training, working with children, widow’s ministry, people living in a trash city and refugees from both Syria and Sudan.

Medical Outreach

Teams will have the option to participate in a mobile medical clinic, supervised by our contact, who is a licensed medical doctor. The team will assist at many levels including preliminary diagnoses, pharmaceuticals, medical education, and spending quality one-on-one time with the people. Those who have no medical training or background will participate in several basic medical-training sessions. Everyone will have the opportunity to help at the clinic. Health-care professionals will certainly be utilized to the extent of their training and abilities.

  • Medical Mission

The Medical Mission originated in 2007, in response to the numerous requests for professional training voiced by healthcare professionals working in clinics in underserved areas of Egypt. The aim was to facilitate establishment of new partnerships between American and Egyptian medical professionals in order to address the gaps in access to good quality healthcare in very remote and poor urban and rural areas in Egypt. A number of American healthcare professionals have traveled to Egypt to volunteer their services and conduct training sessions for local healthcare professionals and community volunteers.  Most Egyptians who participate in this program are from the community-based clinics that HANDS supports in Egypt and from public clinics and universities in Cairo and Minia.  These clinics regularly participate in our local partner’s healthcare improvement campaigns targeting poor and disadvantaged people in Cairo and Minia governorates.

The Medical Mission program is organized and implemented in cooperation with our Egyptian partner organization, CEOSS, which is one of Egypt’s leading development organizations. CEOSS has worked in community healthcare for over 50 years. As a result, it has very strong working relationships with the Egyptian Ministry of Health, as well as deeply rooted relationships with over 150 marginalized communities in Egypt.

In 2010, USAID featured HANDS as one of partners in their newsletter issued in celebration on International Volunteers Day. Our Medical Mission program was highlighted and included a video interview with HANDS Director of Programs, Ivana Smucker, and one of the veteran Medical Mission volunteers, Dr. Nancy Maaty.

Egypt has a hot and arid climate except on the Mediterranean coast in the north. The southernmost cities of Egypt tend to be hotter because they are further into the desert. The church maintains a Trinitarian doctrine and is part of a larger group of churches called the Oriental Orthodox Church. Christianity in Egypt has expressed itself through a rich monastic history. There’s no need to give up everything to be part of something meaningful. Volunteering is now for everyone willing to help out and spare a few days of their time. Continue reading to learn more about medical missions and how you can help.

🩺 What is a Medical Mission Trip?

Medical missions are trips in which medical professionals or students travel abroad for a specified period of time for a specific medical purpose. While medical volunteering is when someone decides to dedicate time to a project that is focused on improving the circumstances of a community or the environment, medical mission opportunities can be a bit different. Volunteer organizations generally put in a lot of work to train volunteers. This is why some projects require volunteers to stay for at least a few weeks. There’s a shift going on in the volunteer landscape with projects welcoming volunteers for shorter periods. These are also known as short-term medical mission trips.

Students, people on a sabbatical or retirees may be able to dedicate themselves to a project for longer periods but there’s a large group of the population for who this simply isn’t an option. Medical relief missions are short-term volunteer programs that can be done for 1-4 weeks. Even if it is for that short amount of time, you can help and support doctors and do amazing things. Of course longer options are available, however, these short-term missions allow everyone to volunteer in for example clinics and experience the incredible benefits of volunteering while not having to stay for a long time period.

🏥 What are Pros and Cons of Medical Mission Trips?

If you’re determined to make a difference during your next holiday, why not volunteer for an international medical trip? Combine the freedom to travel while taking the time to do something for the community of your holiday destination. With medical mission projects entering the picture, being short on time is no longer an excuse for not volunteering. Countless projects and programs are waiting for your help, for example, medical mission trips for nurses or nursing students . Of course, you can also work with doctors. Before you plan you look at the medical mission work opportunities, let’s take a look at some of the pros and cons of those for professionals, students and nurses:

  • Use medical mission work opportunities to volunteer and contribute for a limited period.

  • This is a great opportunity to try out different volunteer projects and programs abroad while gaining valuable experience in your profession.

  • You will learn a lot about the region you volunteer in but also about volunteering.
  • The chance to connect with the local community while getting hands-on and helping with the healthcare system.
  • Participants will see a different side of their travel destination that you will not see as a simple tourist.

  • You will meet other like-minded individuals that share the same ideals as you do.

  • It’s always important to do your due diligence with regards to the organization to know where the funds are invested in. You cannot start by going somewhere and begin nursing people back to health in clinics without any prior knowledge. It is always advisable to do some research to make sure the local organization is offering a sustainable service to the community and using the funds they are getting properly.
  • The time spent on the program is limited which may not allow you to connect as profoundly with your volunteer organization.
  • When working with children it can be hard on them when volunteers come and go.

🤷🏽‍♀️ Why choose a Medical Mission Trip?

If you’re eager to volunteer but have a family, a job or other responsibilities that you simply can’t leave behind for long, a medical mission trip is exactly what you’re looking for. You will gain experience in volunteering, contribute to a meaningful cause and learn a great deal about the challenges others are facing daily.

Why Medical Mission Trips are making a difference? It’s fair to say that organizations prefer volunteers to dedicate themselves for longer periods of time for a program. The longer you stay, the more tasks and responsibilities you will have. This doesn’t mean that a shorter stay is meaningless or less meaningful in any way. The most important thing that will happen during your stay abroad is the cultural interchange and social contact between the volunteer and the locals. Gaining awareness about your volunteer destination will undoubtedly change the way you view the world afterward. Small changes do go a long way.

Is volunteering in developing countries condescending? There are claims that if you volunteer overseas that you’re portraying a message that these communities are unable to solve problems on their own. This mainly refers to programs that aren’t addressing the root problem and are exploiting both the community and the volunteers for personal gains. The goal should always be to empower local communities and give them the support they need to build a better future. Reputable organizations understand the needs of the community and are dedicated to helping the community progress. As doctors and nurses in the field of medicine, you will do exactly that in international clinics and hospitals! Medical mission trips for nursing students are perfect to learn and give practical support. You can leave an imprint as strong as the professionals do!

Although the time of your international volunteer trip may be short, that doesn’t mean your efforts are not of help. As, for example, a volunteer on one of the medical mission trips for college students or nursing students, you will gain a deeper understanding of what is going on in the part of the world your program is in. You will carry this awareness with you throughout your life and undoubtedly share it with others after your experiences while working with local doctors and nursing people in need back to health. All medical mission work opportunities will have an impact.

Short-term medical programs are an excellent opportunity to find out whether volunteering for longer periods is suitable for you.

👨🏽‍⚕️ What kind of Medical Mission Trips are there?

The point of a medical mission trip abroad is to gain experience during a short time period and contribute to one of the projects, by supporting the people and community in regards to healthcare, but also even further. Medical professionals of all sorts, such as dentists , pharmacists, midwives, surgeons, paramedics, pediatricians, nurses are desperately needed. As professionals in the field of medicine, you should consider an international medical mission program! Short-term medical missions for nurses are also always available as they are in dire need of assistance. Furthermore, trips for college students are ideal to help out and at the same time gain valuable experience for your future career.

There are so many possibilities available that it will come down to where you want to go and what skills you have to offer. Some medical trips are suited for specialists, such as dental mission trips . Here are some tasks you will help with if you join a general medical program:

  • Observing procedures
  • Shadowing daily rounds in clinics and hospitals
  • Nursing patients back to health
  • Changing bandages and dressing wounds
  • Monitoring recovery
  • Emergency Room support
  • Applying first aid

As you can see, there are countless options. It’s a matter of preference and skills that will determine where you will do and what you will do on your programs. Brief medical mission trips for nursing students will, of course, have differences in comparison to short-term medical missions for nurses or doctors.

💡 How do I choose the best Medical Mission Trip for me?

The most important aspect of choosing a great medical mission trip program is that you do enough research on the different volunteer organizations and try to answer the following questions:

  • What does the organization stand for?
  • What is their objective and how are they trying to achieve it?
  • How are the funds they receive spent?
  • How do you think you will contribute?

Read up on the organization, read reviews and ask previous volunteers about their experience with the organization. There are some great agencies and non-profit organizations that are doing very responsible work.

Be careful when you choose to volunteer with children. Do your due diligence before signing up. There are organizations however that are doing more harm than good. It’s important to take into account that we have attempted to screen these organizations but in the end, you make the final call. Choose wisely and you will be in for an incredible experience while supporting a meaningful cause.

What are the best places for Medical Mission Trips?

Embark on a volunteer trip and the world is just a click away. Volunteer organizations are aware of the limited time most people have on their hands and are welcoming short-term volunteers. Take this opportunity to explore the world and give back to less fortunate communities, while also linking it to your university studies and gaining credits if you are a college student. Medical mission trips for college students or nursing students are a great way to gain practical experience for a future profession.

Medical mission opportunities can generally be found in developing countries that do not have good or basic healthcare services. This includes places such as:

Countries from all over the world, such as Ghana , Tanzania , Peru , India , Guatemala , Nepal , Sri Lanka or South Africa all need your help. Work in clinics, with doctors in their offices or hospitals and help out where help is needed! Do not hesitate, find a program and destination that suit your taste, volunteer for your first medical mission trip abroad and start nursing people back to good health.

Unlimited volunteer opportunities are awaiting your support.

Pharmacy Volunteers

Pharmacy volunteers, including pharmacists and pharmacy techs, bring great value to IMR teams on international medical mission trips because of their expertise in drug interactions and substitutions, as well as conversions for pediatric or adult dosing. We frequently have internists seeing older children or pediatricians seeing young adults, so it is beneficial for them to have good advice from pharmacists when dosing or choosing medications. Your role goes far beyond counting pills – you will be a valued clinical consultant in our clinics.

The ability of pharmacy volunteers to provide counseling on medication safety to our patients (and to teach our team about medication safety) is both invaluable and lifesaving. One example is in cautioning providers who want to provide a high pill count for medications such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen that can cause harm in the hands of small children. Another is helping patients understand that vitamins are not candy and that children should not hold or be able to reach medication.

Our patients need to understand that medicine should be kept out of the reach of children in our patients’ homes. As a pharmacist, you have the expertise to help raise the level of understanding and patient safety with your professional advice.

Routine vaccines

Recommendations.

Make sure you are up-to-date on all routine vaccines before every trip. Some of these vaccines include

  • Chickenpox (Varicella)
  • Diphtheria-Tetanus-Pertussis
  • Flu (influenza)
  • Measles-Mumps-Rubella (MMR)

Immunization schedules

All eligible travelers should be up to date with their COVID-19 vaccines. Please see  Your COVID-19 Vaccination  for more information.

COVID-19 vaccine

Hepatitis A

Recommended for unvaccinated travelers one year old or older going to Egypt.

Infants 6 to 11 months old should also be vaccinated against Hepatitis A. The dose does not count toward the routine 2-dose series.

Travelers allergic to a vaccine component or who are younger than 6 months should receive a single dose of immune globulin, which provides effective protection for up to 2 months depending on dosage given.

Unvaccinated travelers who are over 40 years old, immunocompromised, or have chronic medical conditions planning to depart to a risk area in less than 2 weeks should get the initial dose of vaccine and at the same appointment receive immune globulin.

Cases of measles are on the rise worldwide. Travelers are at risk of measles if they have not been fully vaccinated at least two weeks prior to departure, or have not had measles in the past, and travel internationally to areas where measles is spreading.

All international travelers should be fully vaccinated against measles with the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine, including an early dose for infants 6–11 months, according to  CDC’s measles vaccination recommendations for international travel .

Measles (Rubeola) - CDC Yellow Book

In Egypt, poliovirus has been identified in the past year.

Travelers to Egypt are at increased risk of exposure to poliovirus if: 1) they work in health care settings involving direct patient contact, 2) assist in refugee camps or other humanitarian aid settings, OR 3) have limited access to clean drinking water and sanitation .

Vaccine recommendations : Adults traveling to Egypt who received a complete polio vaccination series as children, and are at increased risk of exposure to poliovirus, may receive a single lifetime booster dose of inactivated polio vaccine; travelers who are unvaccinated or not fully vaccinated should receive a complete polio vaccination series before travel. Children who are not fully vaccinated will be considered for an accelerated vaccination schedule .

Polio: For Travelers

Rabid dogs are commonly found in Egypt. If you are bitten or scratched by a dog or other mammal while in Egypt, there may be limited or no rabies treatment available.

Consider rabies vaccination before your trip if your activities mean you will be around dogs or wildlife.

Travelers more likely to encounter rabid animals include

  • Campers, adventure travelers, or cave explorers (spelunkers)
  • Veterinarians, animal handlers, field biologists, or laboratory workers handling animal specimens
  • Visitors to rural areas

Since children are more likely to be bitten or scratched by a dog or other animals, consider rabies vaccination for children traveling to Egypt.

Rabies - CDC Yellow Book

Recommended for most travelers, especially those staying with friends or relatives or visiting smaller cities or rural areas.

Typhoid - CDC Yellow Book

Dosing info - Typhoid

Learn actions you can take to stay healthy and safe on your trip. Vaccines cannot protect you from many diseases in Egypt, so your behaviors are important.

Eat and drink safely

Food and water standards around the world vary based on the destination. Standards may also differ within a country and risk may change depending on activity type (e.g., hiking versus business trip). You can learn more about safe food and drink choices when traveling by accessing the resources below.

  • Choose Safe Food and Drinks When Traveling
  • Water Treatment Options When Hiking, Camping or Traveling
  • Global Water, Sanitation and Hygiene | Healthy Water
  • Avoid Contaminated Water During Travel

You can also visit the Department of State Country Information Pages for additional information about food and water safety.

Prevent bug bites

Bugs (like mosquitoes, ticks, and fleas) can spread a number of diseases in Egypt. Many of these diseases cannot be prevented with a vaccine or medicine. You can reduce your risk by taking steps to prevent bug bites.

What can I do to prevent bug bites?

  • Cover exposed skin by wearing long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and hats.
  • Use an appropriate insect repellent (see below).
  • Use permethrin-treated clothing and gear (such as boots, pants, socks, and tents). Do not use permethrin directly on skin.
  • Stay and sleep in air-conditioned or screened rooms.
  • Use a bed net if the area where you are sleeping is exposed to the outdoors.

What type of insect repellent should I use?

  • FOR PROTECTION AGAINST TICKS AND MOSQUITOES: Use a repellent that contains 20% or more DEET for protection that lasts up to several hours.
  • Picaridin (also known as KBR 3023, Bayrepel, and icaridin)
  • Oil of lemon eucalyptus (OLE) or para-menthane-diol (PMD)
  • 2-undecanone
  • Always use insect repellent as directed.

What should I do if I am bitten by bugs?

  • Avoid scratching bug bites, and apply hydrocortisone cream or calamine lotion to reduce the itching.
  • Check your entire body for ticks after outdoor activity. Be sure to remove ticks properly.

What can I do to avoid bed bugs?

Although bed bugs do not carry disease, they are an annoyance. See our information page about avoiding bug bites for some easy tips to avoid them. For more information on bed bugs, see Bed Bugs .

For more detailed information on avoiding bug bites, see Avoid Bug Bites .

Stay safe outdoors

If your travel plans in Egypt include outdoor activities, take these steps to stay safe and healthy during your trip.

  • Stay alert to changing weather conditions and adjust your plans if conditions become unsafe.
  • Prepare for activities by wearing the right clothes and packing protective items, such as bug spray, sunscreen, and a basic first aid kit.
  • Consider learning basic first aid and CPR before travel. Bring a travel health kit with items appropriate for your activities.
  • If you are outside for many hours in heat, eat salty snacks and drink water to stay hydrated and replace salt lost through sweating.
  • Protect yourself from UV radiation : use sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15, wear protective clothing, and seek shade during the hottest time of day (10 a.m.–4 p.m.).
  • Be especially careful during summer months and at high elevation. Because sunlight reflects off snow, sand, and water, sun exposure may be increased during activities like skiing, swimming, and sailing.
  • Very cold temperatures can be dangerous. Dress in layers and cover heads, hands, and feet properly if you are visiting a cold location.

Stay safe around water

  • Swim only in designated swimming areas. Obey lifeguards and warning flags on beaches.
  • Practice safe boating—follow all boating safety laws, do not drink alcohol if driving a boat, and always wear a life jacket.
  • Do not dive into shallow water.
  • Do not swim in freshwater in developing areas or where sanitation is poor.
  • Avoid swallowing water when swimming. Untreated water can carry germs that make you sick.
  • To prevent infections, wear shoes on beaches where there may be animal waste.

Schistosomiasis, a parasitic infection that can be spread in fresh water, is found in Egypt. Avoid swimming in fresh, unchlorinated water, such as lakes, ponds, or rivers.

Keep away from animals

Most animals avoid people, but they may attack if they feel threatened, are protecting their young or territory, or if they are injured or ill. Animal bites and scratches can lead to serious diseases such as rabies.

Follow these tips to protect yourself:

  • Do not touch or feed any animals you do not know.
  • Do not allow animals to lick open wounds, and do not get animal saliva in your eyes or mouth.
  • Avoid rodents and their urine and feces.
  • Traveling pets should be supervised closely and not allowed to come in contact with local animals.
  • If you wake in a room with a bat, seek medical care immediately. Bat bites may be hard to see.

All animals can pose a threat, but be extra careful around dogs, bats, monkeys, sea animals such as jellyfish, and snakes. If you are bitten or scratched by an animal, immediately:

  • Wash the wound with soap and clean water.
  • Go to a doctor right away.
  • Tell your doctor about your injury when you get back to the United States.

Consider buying medical evacuation insurance. Rabies is a deadly disease that must be treated quickly, and treatment may not be available in some countries.

Reduce your exposure to germs

Follow these tips to avoid getting sick or spreading illness to others while traveling:

  • Wash your hands often, especially before eating.
  • If soap and water aren’t available, clean hands with hand sanitizer (containing at least 60% alcohol).
  • Don’t touch your eyes, nose, or mouth. If you need to touch your face, make sure your hands are clean.
  • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your sleeve (not your hands) when coughing or sneezing.
  • Try to avoid contact with people who are sick.
  • If you are sick, stay home or in your hotel room, unless you need medical care.

Avoid sharing body fluids

Diseases can be spread through body fluids, such as saliva, blood, vomit, and semen.

Protect yourself:

  • Use latex condoms correctly.
  • Do not inject drugs.
  • Limit alcohol consumption. People take more risks when intoxicated.
  • Do not share needles or any devices that can break the skin. That includes needles for tattoos, piercings, and acupuncture.
  • If you receive medical or dental care, make sure the equipment is disinfected or sanitized.

Know how to get medical care while traveling

Plan for how you will get health care during your trip, should the need arise:

  • Carry a list of local doctors and hospitals at your destination.
  • Review your health insurance plan to determine what medical services it would cover during your trip. Consider purchasing travel health and medical evacuation insurance.
  • Carry a card that identifies, in the local language, your blood type, chronic conditions or serious allergies, and the generic names of any medications you take.
  • Some prescription drugs may be illegal in other countries. Call Egypt’s embassy to verify that all of your prescription(s) are legal to bring with you.
  • Bring all the medicines (including over-the-counter medicines) you think you might need during your trip, including extra in case of travel delays. Ask your doctor to help you get prescriptions filled early if you need to.

Many foreign hospitals and clinics are accredited by the Joint Commission International. A list of accredited facilities is available at their website ( www.jointcommissioninternational.org ).

In some countries, medicine (prescription and over-the-counter) may be substandard or counterfeit. Bring the medicines you will need from the United States to avoid having to buy them at your destination.

Select safe transportation

Motor vehicle crashes are the #1 killer of healthy US citizens in foreign countries.

In many places cars, buses, large trucks, rickshaws, bikes, people on foot, and even animals share the same lanes of traffic, increasing the risk for crashes.

Be smart when you are traveling on foot.

  • Use sidewalks and marked crosswalks.
  • Pay attention to the traffic around you, especially in crowded areas.
  • Remember, people on foot do not always have the right of way in other countries.

Riding/Driving

Choose a safe vehicle.

  • Choose official taxis or public transportation, such as trains and buses.
  • Ride only in cars that have seatbelts.
  • Avoid overcrowded, overloaded, top-heavy buses and minivans.
  • Avoid riding on motorcycles or motorbikes, especially motorbike taxis. (Many crashes are caused by inexperienced motorbike drivers.)
  • Choose newer vehicles—they may have more safety features, such as airbags, and be more reliable.
  • Choose larger vehicles, which may provide more protection in crashes.

Think about the driver.

  • Do not drive after drinking alcohol or ride with someone who has been drinking.
  • Consider hiring a licensed, trained driver familiar with the area.
  • Arrange payment before departing.

Follow basic safety tips.

  • Wear a seatbelt at all times.
  • Sit in the back seat of cars and taxis.
  • When on motorbikes or bicycles, always wear a helmet. (Bring a helmet from home, if needed.)
  • Avoid driving at night; street lighting in certain parts of Egypt may be poor.
  • Do not use a cell phone or text while driving (illegal in many countries).
  • Travel during daylight hours only, especially in rural areas.
  • If you choose to drive a vehicle in Egypt, learn the local traffic laws and have the proper paperwork.
  • Get any driving permits and insurance you may need. Get an International Driving Permit (IDP). Carry the IDP and a US-issued driver's license at all times.
  • Check with your auto insurance policy's international coverage, and get more coverage if needed. Make sure you have liability insurance.
  • Avoid using local, unscheduled aircraft.
  • If possible, fly on larger planes (more than 30 seats); larger airplanes are more likely to have regular safety inspections.
  • Try to schedule flights during daylight hours and in good weather.

Medical Evacuation Insurance

If you are seriously injured, emergency care may not be available or may not meet US standards. Trauma care centers are uncommon outside urban areas. Having medical evacuation insurance can be helpful for these reasons.

Maintain personal security

Use the same common sense traveling overseas that you would at home, and always stay alert and aware of your surroundings.

Before you leave

  • Research your destination(s), including local laws, customs, and culture.
  • Monitor travel advisories and alerts and read travel tips from the US Department of State.
  • Enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) .
  • Leave a copy of your itinerary, contact information, credit cards, and passport with someone at home.
  • Pack as light as possible, and leave at home any item you could not replace.

While at your destination(s)

  • Carry contact information for the nearest US embassy or consulate .
  • Carry a photocopy of your passport and entry stamp; leave the actual passport securely in your hotel.
  • Follow all local laws and social customs.
  • Do not wear expensive clothing or jewelry.
  • Always keep hotel doors locked, and store valuables in secure areas.
  • If possible, choose hotel rooms between the 2nd and 6th floors.

Healthy Travel Packing List

Use the Healthy Travel Packing List for Egypt for a list of health-related items to consider packing for your trip. Talk to your doctor about which items are most important for you.

Why does CDC recommend packing these health-related items?

It’s best to be prepared to prevent and treat common illnesses and injuries. Some supplies and medicines may be difficult to find at your destination, may have different names, or may have different ingredients than what you normally use.

If you are not feeling well after your trip, you may need to see a doctor. If you need help finding a travel medicine specialist, see Find a Clinic . Be sure to tell your doctor about your travel, including where you went and what you did on your trip. Also tell your doctor if you were bitten or scratched by an animal while traveling.

For more information on what to do if you are sick after your trip, see Getting Sick after Travel .

Medical mission trips in USA and how you can serve.

  • Resource Library Medical mission trips in USA and how you can serve.

Will Rogers

Does being a medical missionary mean you have to go overseas? Is serving in the United States any different than just living your normal life in America? In this post, we want to cover all things related to medical mission trips in the USA. I want to give you three areas where you can serve and some options for you to consider as you think about your role. My hope is that you will be encouraged and challenged to serve and use your skills in the US.

Here are several areas where you can serve in medical mission trips in the USA:

#1 Rural hospitals and clinics

For one example, see Dayspring Health Center in Appalachia where GMHC speaker and resource contributor, Geogy Thomas serves. God started to impress upon Geogy the plight of the rural poor and the disparities of the healthcare system in America. That took him to a rural clinic on the Kentucky/Tennessee border.

In 1952, times were tough in rural Appalachian communities due to the closing of many of the local coal mines. Medical services were meager at best. The story of Dayspring began in this setting. The United Mine Workers Association and the American Medical Association worked with local community leaders to address the lack of adequate health care.  The first full-time physician began seeing patients in August 1954, charging $2 a visit.

Today, patients are still being seen in this underserved area, where the staff promotes full health—physical, spiritual, mental, and economic—of the communities they serve.

#2 Urban clinics

One example of an urban clinic is Christ Community Health Services , where healthcare staff are filling the physical, spiritual, emotional needs of the underserved, the uninsured, and the homeless in the Memphis, Tennessee region.

Christ Community strategically entered Memphis communities over 25 years ago that had become deficient in resources and services. Many of the neighborhood residents lacked access to healthcare resulting in manageable health issues going untreated and undiagnosed.

Christ Community is standing in the gap, delivering quality healthcare and spiritual healing to those in their community who need it most. When patients enter the doors of Christ Community, they feel the love and hope for their lives and their healing. Patients who enter the doors of Christ Community are treated with dignity and respect, along with spiritual healing and the opportunity to experience God’s love in prayer.

#3 Faith-based clinics

One example is Lawndale Christian Health Center , where the mission is to show and share the love of Jesus by promoting wellness and providing quality, affordable healthcare for an under-resourced community in the Chicago area. The median income in Lawndale is $22,383 and the clinic was started because members of a local church had virtually no access to healthcare in their area.

Members of the church and neighborhood began to hold meetings to discuss ways they could meet the needs of their own community. At the top of their list was a desire to address the lack of affordable, quality healthcare services in North Lawndale and on the West Side of Chicago.

The church was able to buy a building, a small clinic, and a full-size basketball court for the community to enjoy. Today, that dream has expanded to over 100 medical providers across six clinic locations. The organizational values of Lawndale are an extension of the Christian Community Development philosophy, embodied by the “3 R’s”: Relocation, Reconciliation, and Redistribution:

  • Relocation is a focus on ‘living among’ in order to clearly understand the issues that face a community.
  • Reconciliation is the value at the heart of the Christian Gospel and includes both a reconciled relationship with God and with each other.
  • Redistribution happens when resources are fairly and justly distributed among a community facing injustice.

Additional options for service in the USA.

The Center for Disease Control has statistics in infant and maternal mortality by race in the US.

In 2018, infant mortality rates by race and ethnicity were as follows:

  • Non-Hispanic black: 10.8
  • Native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islander: 9.4
  • American Indian/Alaska Native: 8.2
  • Hispanic: 4.9
  • Non-Hispanic white: 4.6

The U.S. has an official maternal mortality rate of 17.4 deaths per 100,000 births in 2018. Wide racial and ethnic gaps exist between non-Hispanic black (37.3 deaths per 100,000 live births), non-Hispanic white (14.9), and Hispanic (11.8) women.

Now, according to Healthy People 2020 , health disparities, such as infant and maternal mortality, are health differences that are closely linked with social, economic, or environmental disadvantage.

The social determinants of health are conditions in the environments in which people are born, live, learn, work, play, worship, and age that affect a wide range of health. Resources that enhance the quality of life can have a significant influence on population health outcomes.

Examples of these resources include safe and affordable housing, access to education, public safety, availability of healthy foods, local emergency/health services, and environments free of life-threatening toxins. There are many options to serve in the US. Noting the statistics above, the US is in desperate need of loving, compassionate healthcare providers.

Join a community like Christian Community Health Fellowship (CCHF), where about half of the people who make up the CCHF community work in secular settings—community health clinics, universities, residency programs, and so on.

They are there because of a conviction that this is where they are meant to serve Christ’s mission to bring healing and comfort to the poor, and to represent His kingdom in word and deed. The other half of the CCHF community work in faith-based clinics that strive to provide distinctively Christian care. Each clinic has a unique idea about what it means to deliver Christian care, but everyone strives to be authentic to their calling in Christ.

Lastly, for a few more ideas on how you can serve in the U.S., if you are considering a residency program, consider a faith-based program such as In His Image Family Medicine Residency , where they focus on the underserved, Via Christi Family Medicine Residency, where they train doctors to effectively serve the poorest and most underserved people of this world., or Cahaba Family Medicine Residency Program , which has both an urban and rural track.

My hope in reading this post is that you note that being a medical missionary doesn’t mean you have to go overseas. You can serve in medical missions in the USA as well. There are so many needs for your skills and giftings, so consider how God might be calling you to serve in the United States on His mission. The above options and ideas will help you get started in knowing where some of the greatest needs are.

Transforming Lives: Reflections from Our Medical Mission Trip to the Philippines

two students in scrubs

We are thrilled to share our experiences and reflections from our recent medical mission trip to the Philippines. Our journey was marked by unforgettable moments of compassion and growth, as we worked alongside dedicated healthcare professionals to provide essential medical services to those in underserved regions.

From the bustling streets of General Santos to the operating rooms of local hospitals, our team immersed ourselves in the rich tapestry of Filipino culture while supporting the delivery of healthcare interventions. Through partnerships with organizations like the Medical Mission of Mercy (MMOM), we had the privilege of offering a wide range of medical and surgical services, including cleft lip and palate repairs, general surgeries, dental care, optometric services, and rehabilitation initiatives.

The impact of our mission extended far beyond the confines of the hospital walls, helping individuals who had minimal access to healthcare resources. For many patients, our mission trip represented their first encounter with medical treatment, underscoring the critical importance of initiatives like MMOM in addressing health disparities and improving access to care.

Throughout our time in the Philippines, we were challenged and inspired in equal measure. We grappled with limited resources and unfamiliar clinical settings and did our best to engage. We approached each day with dedication and determination. As anesthesia students, we played a vital role in ensuring the safety and comfort of patients undergoing surgical procedures, and navigating challenges with adaptability.

Beyond the clinical experience, our trip was enriched by the bonds forged with fellow volunteers and members of the local community. Together, we shared laughter, tears, and moments of profound connection, united by a common purpose and shared humanity. These relationships, born out of mutual respect and empathy, will forever hold a special place in our hearts.

Looking ahead, we are filled with a renewed sense of purpose and commitment to serving others. Our experiences in the Philippines have ignited a passion for global health and inspired us to continue advocating for equitable access to healthcare around the world. As we reflect on our journey, we are reminded of the transformative power of compassion, collaboration, and community.

Melbourne-based doctor leads medical team on a life-changing mission overseas

ORLANDO, Fla. — A team is traveling across the world to the land of happiness, bringing relief to those who have been struggling.

What You Need To Know

dr. kenneth sands and his team will travel to the remote asian country of bhutan  the melbourne-based team's mission is a week of knee surgeries more than 500 people signed up for 50 spots for total joint replacements the buddhist country is known for the happiness of its residents, but it is remote  elective total joint procedures are uncommon in bhutan, the doctor said.

Dr. Kenneth Sands is leading a team to Bhutan, a Himalayan kingdom nestled between India and Tibet, on a mission with Operation International . Other medical professionals will join the Melbourne-based team in Asia.

“I’ve been to Indonesia, other parts of the world. But Bhutan was not on my list,” Sands conceded, adding, “It’s going to be life-changing.”

The Buddhist country is known for awe-inspiring vistas and a consistent distinction as one of the happiest countries in the world, periodically surveying the happiness of its inhabitants using the Gross National Happiness, or GNH, index.

But, it’s also a country that is incredibly isolated.

Sands said elective total joint procedures are few and far between in Bhutan, so the orthopedic team is on the mission to bring healing.

Over the course of a week, the team will perform 50 total joint replacements. More than 500 people signed up.

“It’s been a labor of love. Right now, I’m more just stressed, trying to put all this together. I have 22 people’s lives I’m taking care of, just my team,” Sands explained. “Then we are going to attempt to operate on 50 individuals in Bhutan, so the gravity of that is significant.”

The doctor, who most days practices at Melbourne Regional Medical Center, is busy with knee and hip replacements.

He chose to practice medicine after watching his mother often sick with diabetes as he grew up. Sands landed upon orthopedics in particular when he realized something like a knee surgery could offer immediate improvements for patients.

“They are hurting, their lives are affected. Within a short prior of time we make them better,” he said.

Although Sands spent time in the service, he always dreamed of taking his medical skills on a mission to an underserved area of the world.

One year ago, he got that opportunity, as Sands connected with the medical volunteer organization and began planning an April trip to Bhutan.

Months later, equipment had to be shipped overseas. Funds needed to be raised online. And a storage facility packed with soft goods — like gowns, masks and gloves — had to be packed up, as the individual team members, too, zipped up their own bags.

As he contemplated the journey, friends who had been on mission trips before prepared Sands for a reality that not all might go according to plan.

“One of my other friends spent the entire time in customs and never got to do (surgery on) anybody," Sands said. "We’re prepared for bad things can happen, but even if we just help a few people, it’s going to be great.”

The journey to the country also is “harrowing,” he explained, due to the distance and hours spent in flight and because of the final descent into an airport in the middle of a remote valley. That flight is a challenge for many pilots, he said.

The dangers of the journey were not lost on Sands’ wife, who he shared was “extremely concerned,” even suggesting the doctor update his will in case anything should happen to him abroad.

But Sands said he was resolute. If ever there were a time to take on such an adventure, it's now from a career and family standpoint, he said.

“I just think I’m moving into another transition of my career, done what I set out to do when I choose to become a doctor,” Sands said. “I built my practice, helped thousands of people. Now I’m in that stage where I’m trying to give back.”

Editors note: As of the publication date of this story, Spectrum News 13 had not yet been able to reach Sands to find out whether he and his team had returned from Bhutan.

Here’s what happened today

Here’s a quick look at the main developments:

  • Hamas said it is studying Israeli proposals in a “positive spirit” and a delegation will head to Egypt, as Israel reiterates it will attack Gaza’s southernmost city of Rafah regardless.
  • Turkey said it halted all trade with Israel until it ends attacks and allows sufficient aid to Gaza, prompting outrage from the Israeli foreign minister.
  • Hundreds of demonstrators were arrested at some of the largest universities across the United States – taking the total number to more than 2,000 – as President Biden condemns “violent protests” by pro-Palestinian students.
  • Adnan al-Barash, a prominent Palestinian doctor, was allegedly tortured and killed while being held in an Israeli prison, prompting condemnation and calls for an investigation.
  • Bipartisan US senators met with International Criminal Court officials as the global body eyes arrest warrants for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other top Israeli officials.

Diseases spread among displaced Gazans amid pollution, soaring temperatures

The UN is highlighting how temperatures reaching 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit) in Gaza and the accumulation of waste and sewage among tents where displaced Palestinians have to live are only adding to the many challenges faced by the residents of the enclave.

“Sewer pollution has led to the emergence of diseases such as hepatitis A and other viral diseases,” said Abdul Rahman Abu Amra, a nurse in a clinic run by UNRWA, the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, adding that food contamination and lack of water are other challenges.

Salama Abdel-al, a displaced Palestinian, said the rising temperatures are turning tents into “the burning fire of God”.

“It’s like we’re sitting among heaters,” he said.

US senators meet ICC over potential Israel arrest warrants: Report

A group of both Democratic and Republican US senators reportedly held a virtual meeting with senior officials from the International Criminal Court (ICC) over potential arrest warrants being considered for top Israeli officials.

The meeting took place on Wednesday shortly after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke to multiple senators, reports the US news site Axios, citing three unnamed sources.

Republican lawmakers have reportedly threatened to pass legislation against the ICC if it moves forward with the warrants.

Axios earlier reported that Biden administration officials have also privately warned the ICC against the move after a warning by Israel that it could cut off tax funds it collects for the Palestinian Authority, which could cause it to collapse.

Students erect pro-Palestine encampments across Canadian campuses

Students at the University of Toronto set up an encampment in a fenced-off grassy space at the school’s downtown campus where some 100 protesters gathered with dozens of tents.

According to a statement from organisers, the encampment will stay until the university discloses its investments, divests from any that “sustain Israeli apartheid, occupation and illegal settlement of Palestine”, and ends partnerships with some Israeli academic institutions.

“If public disruption is the only way to get our voice heard, then we are willing to do that,” said University of Toronto graduate student and encampment spokesperson, Sara Rasikh.

Students also set up encampments at McGill University in Montreal, the University of British Columbia and the University of Ottawa.

Israel and Hezbollah claim attacks on military infrastructure

The Israeli military released aerial footage it says shows Hezbollah operatives entering buildings in Aita al-Shaab in southern Lebanon. The building is then seen being struck by Israeli fighter jets.

The Israeli army also said during the day, four rocket launches were detected coming from Lebanese territory, which inflicted no casualties. It said it “attacked the source of the launches”.

Hezbollah, which claimed two attacks earlier, said in its end-of-day report it also launched a third strike shortly before midnight, targeting an Israeli military barracks with missiles and achieving a direct hit.

The Lebanese group also released a video from an attack on Sunday, showing one of its fighters launching an antitank guided missile that struck what it said was a military building used by Israeli soldiers in the Shtula settlement.

Turkey halts all trade with Israel citing Gaza war

Turkey stopped all exports and imports to and from Israel because of the “worsening humanitarian tragedy” in the war-battered Gaza Strip.

“Export and import transactions related to Israel have been stopped, covering all products,” Turkey’s Ministry of Trade said in a statement. “Turkey will strictly and decisively implement these new measures until the Israeli government allows an uninterrupted and sufficient flow of humanitarian aid to Gaza.”

The two countries had a trade volume of $6.8bn in 2023. Turkey last month imposed trade restrictions on Israel over what it said was Israel’s refusal to allow Ankara to take part in air-dropped aid operations for Gaza.

Twelve arrests on Portland campus

Earlier, we reported that Portland, Oregon, police had begun clearing a library building occupied by pro-Palestine protesters on the campus of Portland State University in the US.

A Portland police spokesperson says that 12 people were arrested during the evacuation of the building, adding that four of the arrested were students.

Protesters occupied the building on Monday.

Houthi leader says over 600 missiles launched since October 7

Abdel-Malik al-Houthi, the leader of the Houthis in Yemen, says the group has launched 606 ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and drones in its attacks since October 7, which the group says are carried out in opposition to the deadly war on Gaza.

He said in a speech that 111 of the projectiles were directly launched at Israel, with the rest targeting warships belonging to Israel’s allies in the region, along with other vessels traversing the waters near Yemen.

Al-Houthi claimed that the group has so far targeted 107 ships linked with Israel and the US, and that it launched 33 missiles and drones in eight attacks in the past week in the Red Sea, the Gulf of Aden, the Arabian Sea and Israel.

“There is considerable annoyance and concern among the enemies due to operations extending to the Indian Ocean,” he said.

War takes heavy toll on Palestinian economy: UN

The Palestinian territories’ gross domestic product (GDP) is 25 percent lower today than a prewar six-month projection predicted, according to a new report from UNDP, entitled War in Gaza: Expected Socioeconomic Impacts on the State of Palestine.

Abdallah Al Dardari, director of the Regional Bureau for Arab States at the UN Development Programme (UNDP), and Mounir Tabet, deputy executive secretary for the UN Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (UNESCWA) briefed media on the report.

Here are a few more key figures that show the dire situation of Gaza’s economy:

  • The GDP losses in all Palestinian territories are projected to hit 29 percent, should fighting continue for nine months.
  • The poverty rate has increased from 38 to more than 60 percent in the first six months of the war in all Palestinian territories.
  • The unemployment rate in all Palestinian territories has risen from 25 percent to 46 percent.
  • The war has wiped out 40 years’ worth of investments made in human development in Gaza.
  • Seventy-two percent of housing in Gaza has been destroyed.

US Muslim group condemns Biden comments

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) blasted President Joe Biden for failing to denounce Israel’s attack on Gaza while supporting a crackdown on student protests in the US.

“If President Biden is concerned about unrest on college campuses, he should start specifically condemning attacks on peaceful protesters and stop funding the genocide that has triggered student protests. Until then, he’s part of the problem,” CAIR’s National Deputy Director Edward Ahmed Mitchell said in a statement.

Earlier, Biden said at the White House: “Dissent is essential for democracy, but dissent must never lead to disorder.”

The president also said the protests have not caused him to reconsider his approach to Israel’s war on Gaza, which has killed more than 34,000 people, mostly children and women. Biden has occasionally criticised Israel’s conduct, but continues to supply it with weapons.

Syria says eight soldiers wounded after Israeli air strike

The Syrian Ministry of Defence says in a short statement that eight soldiers were wounded after the Israeli military launched an air strike from the occupied Golan Heights.

The attack hit an area in the vicinity of the capital Damascus, and there were also some “material losses”, it said, according to state-run SANA broadcaster.

Earlier, the Reuters news agency had cited an unnamed security source as saying that the Israeli strike had hit a building operated by Syrian security forces on the outskirts of Damascus.

Israel ‘will stand alone if it needs to’, says PM Netanyahu

As pro-Palestinian sentiment rises across the globe and Israel is increasingly criticised for its killing of tens of thousands of Palestinians, the Israeli prime minister is staying defiant.

“If we need to stand alone – we will stand alone,” Benjamin Netanyahu’s office quoted him as saying in a meeting with Holocaust survivors.

“If it is possible to recruit the nations of the world – much better. But if we do not defend ourselves – nobody will defend us. The strength at our disposal is the strength that I have heard here, we have no other.”

Netanyahu earlier reiterated his promise to launch a ground invasion of Rafah in southern Gaza regardless of an agreement with Hamas or opposition by its allies, including the United States.

UN rapporteur says ‘no Palestinian is safe’ after doctor’s killing

The UN rapporteur for occupied Palestinian territories says she’s “extremely alarmed” by reports of the killing of Dr Adnan al-Barash in an Israeli prison.

“While I acquire more information, I urge the diplomatic community to intervene with concrete measures to protect Palestinians,” Francesca Albanese wrote in a post on X.

Bernie Sanders: Protesting students are ‘out there for the right reasons’

US Senator Bernie Sanders says President Joe Biden is right to condemn bigotry, but cautioned it’s important to understand why thousands of students are protesting at universities.

“They are out there not because they are ‘pro-Hamas’, they are out there because they are outraged by what the Israeli government is now doing in Gaza,” he said during an interview with US broadcaster CNN.

“They do not want to see a situation continue where 110,000 Palestinians, or about 5 percent of the population, have been killed or wounded.”

‘No surprise’: US students slam Biden comments on Gaza encampments

President Joe Biden says “order must prevail” on university campuses in the United States, just hours after police raided and dismantled another  protest encampment  in support of Palestinians.

Hasan Pyarali — the Muslim Caucus chairperson for College Democrats of America, the university arm of the Democratic Party — told Al Jazeera he was disappointed by Biden’s comments on Thursday.

“In our point of view, it’s not just good policy to  oppose the genocide , it’s good politics. He has done neither, and we’re really disappointed to see that,” said Pyarali, a senior at Wake Forest University in North Carolina.

Qatar ‘strongly condemns’ threats to attack Gaza’s Rafah

Qatar condemned in “the strongest terms” Israeli threats to storm Gaza’s Rafah and its “categorical rejection of any military operation” in the area with an estimated 1.5 million people. Such an attack would be “a humanitarian catastrophe”.

The country’s representative to the UN, Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al Thani, delivered the remarks to the General Assembly in New York City in a meeting to discuss the US veto of full Palestinian membership in the UN.

The Qatari envoy said this marks “a setback for efforts to bring peace to the region”.

“Her Excellency stressed Qatar’s firm position regarding the legitimacy and fairness of the Palestinians request for a full UN membership, especially since the Palestinian request meets the conditions and standards contained in Article 4 of the UN Charter.”

Hamas condemns doctor’s killing, calls for international intervention

Hamas says in a statement that the killing of Dr Adnan al-Barash in an Israeli prison is another episode of the “horrific war crimes” committed against Palestinians.

The group said many, including children, are regularly detained by Israeli forces from schools and hospitals and taken to detention centres where they lack the most basic rights.

“Among them are doctors whose crime was performing their humanitarian duty towards their wounded and sick people,” Hamas said.

Its statement called on the international community to condemn the arbitrary arrest and subsequent deaths in detention of Palestinians, and force Israel to reveal the fate of thousands of prisoners and return them to their families.

LISTEN: Will pro-Palestine protests impact Biden’s re-election?

Standoffs between police and Palestine solidarity demonstrators on US college campuses are intensifying.

Violent confrontations are giving rise to fears of outside interference. Politicians are taking sides.

How will the protests affect US President Joe Biden’s bid for a second term?

Pulitzer Prize board lauds students journalists covering campuses

As the Pulitzer Prize board gathers to announce this year’s winners on May 6, it has released a statement to recognise the efforts of student journalists covering pro-Palestinian demonstrations in the face of what it called “great personal and academic risk”.

“We would also like to acknowledge the extraordinary real-time reporting of student journalists at Columbia University, where the Pulitzer Prizes are housed, as the New York Police Department was called onto campus on Tuesday night,” it said.

“In the spirit of press freedom, these students worked to document a major national news event under difficult and dangerous circumstances and at risk of arrest.”

Iran university promises free education, stay to expelled Western students

Multiple universities in Iran are taunting their Western counterparts by promising to accept students who are expelled for participating in pro-Palestine protests.

The Shahid Beheshti University (SBU) in Tehran, one of Iran’s top universities, announced on Thursday that it will welcome students turned away from universities in the US and across Europe.

“We have considered scholarships for these students and will fully pay for their education, dormitory and stay,” said SBU President Mahmoud Aghamiri, according to state-linked media.

“We will also especially support Palestinian students who are facing challenges,” he said without elaborating.

Dozens of universities across Iran were the scenes of widespread student demonstrations – and clashes with armed security and arrests – during nationwide protests that rocked Iran in 2022 and 2023.

At least 2,000 arrested at US campus pro-Palestine protests: Report

A tally from the Associated Press found that 2,000 people have been arrested since mid-April, when students at Columbia University in New York occupied their campus and kicked off a wave of student-led pro-Palestine protests across the US.

Earlier today, at least 200 were arrested at the University of California, Los Angeles, in the latest incident of mass arrest at a campus protest.

US calls on Israel to protect aid – before it reaches the Gaza Strip

Israel should prevent further attacks on aid convoys bound for Gaza, US Department of State spokesperson Matthew Miller says.

His words come after an attack on two Jordanian aid convoys by Israeli protesters while they were on their way to the Gaza Strip.

The convoys, one taking the Beit Hanoon crossing and another taking the Karem Abu Salem crossing from Israel into Gaza – crossings known to Israelis as Erez and Kerem Shalom, respectively – were targeted by Israeli settlers, who dumped some of their cargo and damaged the trucks, said the ministry, noting that the trucks continued the aid delivery mission.

The Jordanian foreign minister said the “despicable attack by radical Israeli settlers … warrants global condemnation”.

Miller also called Hamas’s moves to “divert” aid convoys in Gaza “unacceptable.”

‘Islamic Resistance in Bahrain’ claims first attack on Israel’s Eilat

A group identifying itself under the umbrella term the “Islamic Resistance in Bahrain” has claimed its first attack on Israel.

The group, called Saraya al-Ashtar or al-Ashtar Brigades, released a video showing a drone being launched, allegedly at the Israeli port city of Eilat, on Saturday. Israel has not commented on any such attack.

The group said it “targeted the headquarters of the company responsible for land transportation in the Zionist entity [Trucknet] in the city of Umm al-Rashrash [Eilat] in occupied Palestine”.

Trucknet, which is an Israeli transport company, signed an agreement in March to transfer oil between Israel and Arab countries. Saraya al-Ashtar is designated as a “terrorist” organisation by the US, which says it has ties with Iran.
