Aqua Mekong cruise ship facts

Aqua Mekong is a small ultra-luxury river cruise ship. It sails between Vietnam and Cambodia with curated shore excursions and fine dining.

  • Review conclusion

The Aqua Mekong is one of the worlds most luxurious river cruise ships. It is a small vessel with a genuine sense of exclusivity. Perhaps that’s most evident in Aqua Mekong’s unrivalled destination experiences. Sailing between Ho Chi Minh City, Phnom Penh and Siem Reap, guests are treated to curated shore excursions which are better than any others on the Mekong River. This Aqua Mekong review explains it all.

On board there is bespoke service, not to mention an excellent restaurant as well as an elegant bar. What’s more, the rooms are all river view suites.

However, there are things worth knowing about a river cruise on Aqua Mekong. For instance, unlike larger vessels there are set dining times. On the other hand its intimate size means it can explore the Mekong River in a way others can’t.

  • Unrivalled shore excursions.
  • Sense of exclusivity.
  • Great food.
  • Set dining times.

The Aqua Mekong deck plan is easy to get around. There are a total of 3 passenger decks, the highest of which is deck 3.

  • Reception : Deck 2
  • Accommodation : Decks 1 to 2
  • Main dining room : Deck 2
  • Theatre : Deck 3
  • Observation lounge : Deck 3

The crew quaters are found on deck 0.

Aqua Mekong is a river cruise ship belonging to Aqua Expeditions . The vessel was designed by Saigon-based Studio Noor and built in Vietnam in 2014.

The Aqua Mekong bar in the Observation Lounge.

The Aqua Mekong is 61.5 m. / 205 ft. long with three passenger decks and room for a maximum of 40 guests (double occupancy), so it never feels crowded.

Indeed, the Aqua Mekong river cruise ship feels like an exclusive residence thanks to fine design elements like hand-made lacquered wall panels, locally sourced silk fabrics and oriental objet d’art.

Object d'art from Vietnam and Cambodia.

The residential feel continues with spacious suites as well as a private cinema. Aqua Mekong also has a gourmet restaurant, an observation lounge, a cocktail lounge, a resort-style sun deck, an infinity plunge-pool and a gym.

Dining is a highlight of any river cruise on Aqua Mekong. Indeed, the seasonal menus are crafted by Michelin-starred chef David Thompson.

The food is regionally inspired, drawing heavily on the repertoire of tastes from Vietnam and Cambodia. What’s more, each dish is made with peak-season produce which comes directly from the Mekong River delta and surrounding region.

The Dining Room on the Aqua Mekong river cruise ship.

There is just one indoor restaurant on Aqua Mekong. It is called the Dining Room and has panoramic views across the stern. The sophisticated decor reflects the Vietnamese spirit of Aqua Mekong, with a hint of Paris-chic.

The menu in the Dining Room changes daily. On my review voyage there was an exceptional Vietnamese Watercress Soup as well as delicious BBQ Duck with Hoisin Sauce.

Deep Fried Sea Bass with Three Flavoured Sauce.

However, local fish was often the star of the dinner table. Indeed, the Deep-Fried Sea Bass with Three Flavoured Sauce was spectacular. So too was the Red Snapper with Lemon & Celery.

Desserts were somewhat less inspired, though it has to be said the Orange & Almond Cake with Toasted Almonds & Cream was delectable.

At least once per voyage there is also a BBQ dinner on the outdoor observation deck (weather permitting).

It’s worth noting that there are set dining times for breakfast, lunch and dinner. These are posted in the Daily Agenda news sheet.

The shore excursions on Aqua Mekong are carefully curated explorations designed to immerse you in the local culture. While the choice of excursions is limited, each one guarantees a unique and memorable experience.

A skif speeding away from the Aqua Mekong river cruise ship.

There are typically four excursions each day; two in the morning and two in the afternoon. These are described in detail during a briefing the night before. The excursions can include river trips on Aqua Mekong’s own skiffs, visits to local villages, bikes rides through rice fields, kayaking and chef’s market tours, just to name a few.

On my review voyage I saw a community lion dance in a small riverside village. Not to mention riding a rickshaw to the food markets in Chau Doc city. It was all very exotic, and a world away from the typical tourist experience. In fact, I think the shore excursions on Aqua Mekong achieve that rarest of travel experiences – they truly immerse you in local culture and let you experience a world far from the every day.

There are just 20 rooms on the Aqua Mekong river cruise ship and all of them are suites. The decor exudes minimalist Asiatic elegance with hardwood interiors and lacquered finishes. Each suite has a full river view, but it’s worth noting that only some have balconies.

I stayed in a Non-balcony Suite on my Aqua Mekong review voyage. Floor-to-ceiling glass ensured uninterrupted views of the river. There were chaise lounges for admiring the view as well as a single armchair. What’s more, there was a luxurious bathroom with dual-vanity and rain water shower.

A Non-balcony Suites on the Aqua Mekong river cruise ship.

The Balcony Suites are almost identical to the Non-Balcony Suites, though the internal space is somewhat smaller. That said, I think the Balcony Suites are a better option.

A Balcony Suite on the Aqua Mekong river cruise ship.

For those who like more space there are also One-bedroom Suites. Although it’s worth noting these are actually interconnecting Balcony and Non-balcony Suites where the non-balcony side is converted into a living room.

Editors tip: There are no televisions in any of the suites on board. However, movies are available in the Private Cinema .

Every suite on Aqua Mekong has an attendant who services the room three times each day, it’s a real treat. Another treat is the free laundry service; your clothes will be freshly laundered and pressed, then returned each afternoon.

Nightlife on Aqua Mekong is mostly in the Observation Lounge & Bar . On my review voyage it was the place where guests gathered to share stories, not to mention libations.

The lounge has lots of overstuffed sofas to sink into and relax. If you are in the mood there are board games as well as books to be read.

Aqua Mekong also has a beautiful Cocktail Lounge decorated with handmade lacquered panels. A hideaway bar opens from the wall to reveal a tantalizing array of glassware.

The Aqua Mekgons Cocktail Lounge.

In addition, there is a Private Cinema where you can enjoy blockbuster entertainment in surround sound. An outdoor cinema also screens popular films on occassion. Fresh popcorn is also available!

The intimate Aqua Mekong has an unexpectedly large range of wellness and relaxation services. There is a beautifully appointed spa offering indulgent massage and beauty treatments. The gym has exercise machines and free weights and there are early morning meditation and yoga classes.

A plunge pool on a Mekong river cruise ship.

The Aqua Mekong river cruise ship has an infinity plunge pool with magnificent views over the bow. I often enjoyed a refreshing dip before lunch. A large sun terrace at the stern has comfortable sun loungers as well as teak tables and chairs.

There is a small but nonetheless interesting array of activities on board Aqua Mekong.

There are cooking demonstrations and classes hosted by the head chef. These were very popular on my review voyage.

The on board expedition team leaders also provide fascinating lectures about the culture, life and history of Vietnam and Cambodia.

The Games Room on the Aqua Mekong river cruise ship.

There is a games room featuring table football complete with cork balls for quiet play, as well as board games like chess, mahjong, Scrabble and Monopoly.

Aqua Mekong also has a boutique selling branded merchandise together with clothing, keepsakes and curios made by local villagers.

The Aqua Mekong dress code can best be described as smart-casual. On my review voyage guests wore casual loose-fitting clothing on board during the day.

Editors tip: Whilst on shore excursions I recommend respectful attire, especially in religious or rural settings where the cultural norms are more conservative. Clothing that covers the arms and legs is ideal in these circumstances.

In the evening most guests on my voyage liked to dress smartly. Men wore shirts with collars while women wore pant suits, or dresses and blouses.

It’s worth noting that there is no need for jackets or formal wear.

The Aqua Mekong is not quite all-inclusive. Meals, wines and Champagne are included as well as non-alcoholic beverages, teas and coffees. However, spirits and house cocktails are not included. These incur an additional charge of USD8-20.

On the other hand, the river cruise fare includes all shore excursions, as well as transfers to and from the ship. In addition, laundry and pressing is included in the cruise fare.

It’s worth noting that gratuities are not included in the cruise fare. Gratuities can be paid in cash or by credit card at the end of your voyage.

Editors tip: Aqua Mekong accepts credit card payments using Visa or Mastercard. American Express is not accepted on board the ship.

Aqua Mekong appeals to those who want to explore the places others rarely visit.

Indeed, most guests have seen the World. They are discerning and active, ranging in age from 40 to 70-years old.

Most guests are from the USA and the UK, however Australians, Canadians and Europeans are also onboard.

It’s worth noting that Aqua Mekong is gay-friendly.

The Aqua Mekong is ideal for those who want to explore the river in style. Indeed, it is the most luxurious vessel on the Mekong. What’s more, it takes you places others don’t. Also, the dining is excellent and so too is the accommodation. However, the service can be patchy. Especially if you choose to stay on board rather than partaking in shore excursions. That said, I think Aqua Mekong offers one of the most uniquely exceptional cruise experiences.

5 of the best Mekong river cruises

The Mekong River rises in China’s Tibetan Plateau and drains a large part of Southeast Asia, finally meeting the south China Sea in southern Vietnam. It’s a vital lifeline for the entire region too, with villages and towns dotting its entire length as it passes through, or defines the border between, all countries in this part of Asia, including Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam. Perhaps unsurprisingly then, extended boat tours and river cruises are an extremely popular way to explore the area, from a few days to tours of a week or more than incorporate additional side-trips away from the Mekong.

When planning to take a longer cruise along the Mekong, it’s useful to note that the river’s course passes the capital cities of Laos and Cambodia, Vientiane and Phnom Penh, while the delta is easily accessible from Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) in Vietnam. That makes tours that depart from one place and end in another particularly popular, and perfect for longer trips or backpackers who want to incorporate the journey into an onward itinerary. There’s plenty of other factors to consider before booking however, such as the river cruise itinerary, value for money, comfort on board, and the health and safety record of the tour companies. Of the myriad tours available, here are five of the best based on those factors and more.

I will attempt to post updates as we go along on this journey at regular intervals.

A bit of background. My husband and I are traveling on this trip. He is 62, I am 58, we live in the US and are retired. We are frequent travelers, having been fortunate to travel to more than 100 countries, and to all 7 continents. We have been on about 9 river cruises, and have sailed with Scenic in the past. We have also visited Vietnam before.  We are doing the Scenic program ‘Temple Discovery & Luxury Mekong Cruise 7 night’, which starts with 3 nights hotel stay in Siem Reap and then sails 7 nights from Siem Reap south towards Ho Chi Minh City. We have added on pre and post touring and stays on our own.

This is part of a longer trip of 35 days in Asia. We left home 2 weeks ago. Flying started with Tampa to Toronto on Air Canada. Then Toronto to Munich, also on Air Canada. Next leg was Munich to Bangkok on Thai Air. We were in Business, and made good use of the lie flat seats on the long legs. We loved the layout of the Air Canada Business, lots of space, privacy and storage. The Thai Air Business did not have as much storage, but the service and food were excellent.  We are light packers. For my suitcase, I have 1 carry on size piece of luggage (but I do check it as I don’t like to be bothered with it), and I carry a large purse with me while traveling. Inside my large purse is a smaller cross body bag for when I reach my destination for my everyday touring about. Hubby has a 30” duffel style luggage for his suitcase. He has brought this larger bag, which is about 40 percent empty, as we intend to have some custom clothes made in HoiAn. He carries with him a regular size backpack on the plane. Inside his backpack is a lightweight backpack rolled up that he will use for touring about when we reach our destination. Yes, we will need to do laundry at about the half way point, which is HoiAn.

We started this trip by flying in to Bangkok, and then took a car and driver 3 hours ($51) out to the beach town of Hua Hin. We spent 3 nights at the colonial style Centara Grand, to relax and recover from jet lag. Lovely hotel, nice area. Had a few massages, visited some markets, chilled.

Came back in to Bangkok, where a friend from US had flown in to join us, and we met at the Century Park Hotel. This started as the first night of a Gate 1 tour ‘10 Day Central Thailand with River Kwai and Pattaya’. If you are not familiar with Gate 1, they are a low cost tour company that packs a lot of value and busy itinerary in to a tour. We use them in places that don’t have much in the way of efficient public transportation. We had no scheduled event the first night, so we had booked a Street Food Tour of Bangkok by Tuk Tuk, which was lots of fun.

The next morning, we started the busy tour program which covered Bangkok, Kanchanaburi, River Kwai, Ayutthaya, and Pattaya. Floating markets, temples, palaces, jungle hotel, lots of stuff.

We are now in Pattaya, back on our own. The Gate 1 tour ended here a couple days ago. We went to the wonderful Elephant Jungle Sanctuary yesterday, and had a great experience at this ethical elephant home. Our friend flew back to the US this morning. We will take a taxi about 2 hours ($36) from here to Bangkok, and then we will fly on to Hanoi, Vietnam this afternoon, about a 2 hour flight.

More to come.

Will be following along...  We are doing Vietnam/Cambodia with Emerald in February.  It will be interesting to see how the sister companies compare.

Are you spending any time in Ha Long Bay?

I will follow along too, it sounds great.

My parents did an Asian river cruise years ago and loved it.

We have been to Thailand quite a few times, but never to Hua Hin.  I didn't realise how cheap getting a driver there would be, we might need to revisit.  Luckily it is an easy trip from Australia.

Yes, we are at Bangkok airport now headed to Hanoi for 2 nights. We will then board an Orchid Cruise for 2 nights to sail on Lan Ha Bay (this is the bay next to HaLong, just as pretty but less crowded).

We used Hua Hin Cab, both directions, booked in advance. Excellent service, on time, clean cars.

We checked in to VietJet Airlines for flight BKK Bangkok to HAN Hanoi, direct, 2 hours. They did ask for our Vietnam visas and spent a good bit of time looking them over at check in.  Like us, several people have questions on the visa situation for Vietnam, as many need to enter Vietnam multiple times. Currently, getting a multi -entry visa is difficult and costly. After much research, we went with 2 Vietnam e-visas each, both single entry. Simple to apply online ourselves. Should work, we’ll see.

"Live from...."

Thank you for taking us along on your adventure.

For some reason, my previous post is wanting to post again.

Arrived into Hanoi airport, and were quickly through Immigration. No smiles or conversation, but the eVisa was quickly looked at, and then we were through. That means the first entry (of 2 entries) into Vietnam with the current visa issue was successful. Both bags were out shortly after, and we walked outside to meet our driver. Transfer booked through our hotel and prepaid ($20).

We are staying at the elegant La Sinfonia del Rey Hotel for the next 2 nights. We booked a Terrace Suite with breakfast. The room is slightly on the small side, but it is lovely and has a large balcony overlooking the park. I’m a deal hunter, so was able to get 2 nights with breakfast, plus 1 included dinner (tomorrow night) for a grand total of $233.

Terry&Mike.  We are from Naples, so almost neighbors.  We leave on Jan 5 for Singapore, then Hanoi, then Siem Reap to join Scenic for the same river cruise you are taking.  Will be very interested to follow along with you.  We have been to Asia several times, but never to Vietnam or Cambodia.  We were supposed to do Vietnam three times, but COVID cancelled all of those trips.  So we are excited to finally get there.  Enjoy your adventure.

Nice! You are practically up the street from us!

I’m happy that you finally get your adventure, and hope it is awesome.

Forgot to mention that we purchased Vietnamese Dong at the Hanoi Airport when we landed. We usually order some foreign currency before we depart, so that we hit the ground running with some local cash in our pockets, but were unable to buy VND from our bank, although we were able to buy Thai Baht.

There are several desks selling currency once you clear Immigration and Customs. They have their rates on small signs, and all are basically the same.

We bought just under 10 Million VND for $400 usd.

Cambodia uses the US dollar, so we are good there.

Today we explored Hanoi, our first time in this vibrant city. We walked through the streets of the chaotic Old Quarter. It is bustling, colorful, and full of vendors selling all sorts of wares, and motor scooters zipping around.

Vietnam probably does coffee better than most anywhere in the world, and we shopped for some, plus a couple other treasures.

We walked around the lake, and through a large holiday market.

We attended a water puppet show, and loved it. We bought tickets this morning for an afternoon show, front row seats, about $16 for 2.

It’s a heavily cash society, with many vendors (including the ticket office of the water puppets) only accepting VND cash.

Beautiful day, clear with a high around 76 degrees F.

Thanks so much for posting about your trip. I’m following it and enjoying vicariously, since our Scenic trip isn’t for over a year. Your posts just give me more to look forward to!

Today starts our Ha Long Bay program. We were picked up at the hotel in Hanoi this morning at 8:20am, and driven to Hai Phong, about 2.5 hours away. There was a bathroom stop along the way, for an extra 35 minutes, at a pearl shop.

Our transfer to was a very nice shared mini bus, and there were 7 passengers, $20 pp. We booked this in advance,  from HaLongbaytours.com which is owned by Blue Dragon Travel, along with the entire package for the junk boat trip.

We arrived in the busy Hai Phong port and were dropped at the pier side waiting lounge for Orchid Cruises. There are hundreds and hundreds of boats, of all sizes and types. We booked onto Orchid Classic, in a Premium Suite Balcony. Our total cost was $850 + $100 holiday surcharge, plus $40 for the shared transfer to the ship from Hanoi, plus $45 for a private transfer from the ship to HPH HaiPhong airport. It is a 2 night itinerary.

We had a 45 minute ferry transfer to the ship, boarded, had safety briefing, and then were allowed to access our cabins for 15 minutes before lunch started. Lunch was a sit down, multi course delight of great flavors. Beverages are extra and are a bit on the high side.

After lunch we went to our cabin to quickly change for an outing to the Bright Caves. While in our room we were able to buy a bottle of red wine and a large bottle of water from our balcony from a lady in a small boat for a slightly elevated price.

The caves excursion was interesting but not awesome.

They are setting up the top deck for a BBQ and Christmas party tonight.

Our room is very large, and beautiful. The ship is also very nice. The downside is that everything seems rushed, which we were thinking it would be more of relaxed sailing in natural beauty.

The guests are from lots of different countries, and interesting and positive. There are 28 guests onboard.

We picked this sailing because the itinerary goes to less crowded Lan Ha Bay. After seeing the crowds of people and number of boats, this may be a good idea.

We did the Scenic Mekong cruise the first year they offered it. Our only complaint was the acoustics in the dining room were horrible. There was a Scenic office staff on board and he was told by almost everyone on board how bad it was. Please let me know if they fixed it.

We absolutely loved the Mekong cruise and also did Halong Bay after. You are in for a real treat.

Last night was Christmas Eve and the crew threw a huge Christmas party. The spread of food was amazing including turkey, lamb chops, shrimp, chicken, pork, squid, Vietnamese dishes, pasta, salads, charcuterie, desserts, on and on. It was amazing.

There was also music, a dancing group, and a Santa with a big bag of gifts for the guests. It was a fun night.

Today we have an early start, with breakfast at 7a and off the ship by 8a for a full day of activities.

C9CEFD70-C873-4387-ACC8-5637C0E11546.jpeg

Today was a full day in the Ha Long Bay area. We spent it in the less crowded areas of Lan Ha Bay and Cat Ba Island.

Breakfast was at 7am, with a buffet and eggs cooked to order and pho. All good.

At 8a, we were transferred to a smaller day boat that could get into smaller bays. We spent the day with activities and returned to our main boat at 4:20p.

We had a scenic sailing for about 2 hours, then took a bike ride to a small village, about 30 minutes each way. This was fun. Those not up to it could ride on the back of a scooter with a driver.

Afterwards we had a multi course lunch served in the day boat of local cuisine, all excellent.

Next, we went to a lovely bay for kayaking and swimming.

We then had a scenic sailing of about an hour back to our main boat.

Stunning scenery, fun activities, very nice day.

On our Ha Long Bay cruise we enjoyed a spectacular Iridescent Bug Show. Maybe you will get to see one also

6 hours ago, trtog7 said: On our Ha Long Bay cruise we enjoyed a spectacular Iridescent Bug Show. Maybe you will get to see one also

No, we didn’t have that. Last night was a lovely dinner, and afterwards was Squid Fishing.

I picked this ship because of the activities of biking and kayaking. When I picked it, I looked at a few different ships and they all had similar itineraries with some differences in activities.

It’s good you bring up this point, as some people might not realize they have a choice or options.

This morning is kayaking, tea service, and brunch, then we disembark at 11:30a.

Hubby and I will head to the nearby HPH HaiPhong Cat Bi airport, about 20 minutes away, by private transfer, $45. We will then fly direct 1 hour 15 minutes on Vietnam Airlines to DaNang, Vietnam. We will transfer to HoiAn, about 50 minutes away, by private car, $18, booked through the owner of the next place we are staying.

Gorgeous photo!  Sounds like it’s been a terrific trip so far.

Apologies, I noticed a typo in my last post. It is about 50 minutes from Hai Phong pier to HPH Hai Phong Cat Bi airport, not 20 minutes as my post says.

Our driver was waiting for us at the DAD DaNang airport and drive us 50 minutes to our hotel in HoiAn.

We are staying at the Villa Orchid Garden Riverside, a small, casual hotel about a 15 minute walk from Old Town. We have a large room with separate living area and kitchenette, and 2 bathrooms. We booked 5 nights with breakfast for $213 total; we booked this quite a bit back and rates are higher now.

It rained last night. The weather report for today is a high of 76 F and partly cloudy. We are headed to breakfast, and to give our hotel our laundry for the past 2.5 weeks to have done.

35D73282-A7DD-452F-8206-FAB09AAE4288.jpeg

We had previously visited Hoi An in January 2020 for 1 day, while on a port stop for an ocean cruise, and were looking forward to returning. Our second visit confirms our thoughts that this is one of the prettiest of most charming towns in Asia. We were booked to stay for 5 nights, but a flight change has us being here for 4 nights.

Yesterday, the temperature was a high of around 76 and partly cloudy. Gorgeous day, and we made the most of it.

We already had a plan that we hoped to have some custom clothes made while in Hoi An. There are literally hundreds of custom tailors here. We both had given some thought as to what we wanted, and had some some research as to what shops to focus on.

At Bao Diep, we ordered hubby a classic black tuxedo, plus an extra jacket in a beautiful silk print, and 3 dress shirts. For me a long, flowy silk dress. $500.

A bit later in the day, a dress caught my eye at another tailor we strolled by, Lua Viet Nam Vi Ana Silk, and I ordered another long dress, as well as a shirt. $70.

We go back to both tailors today for our first fitting of our purchases, and they should be ready for pick up tomorrow.

We also stopped for coconut coffee. In the afternoon we stopped in a spa for 60 minute massages, 2 for $35.

We spent most of the day just strolling around this beautiful city. We ate fresh spring rolls, Cao Lau noodles, and enjoyed a Vietnamese red wine that was fairly decent.

When we returned to our room, the laundry I had given to our hotel at breakfast was waiting for us.

We join Scenic in Siem Reap on December 31, with a 3 night hotel stay at the Raffles Grand D’Angkor.

Scenic also offers itineraries that include Hanoi, Ha Long Bay, Hoi An, and Ho Chi Minh City, but we decided to do those on our own.

Why a river cruise is the best way to explore Vietnam and Cambodia

By Charlie Clausen | 1 month ago

The Mekong is one of the world's great river systems, flowing over 5000 kilometres through six countries, and I was thrilled when Getaway rang to ask if I wanted to join the ultra-luxury Scenic Spirit for an unforgettable cruise and land journey through Cambodia and Vietnam.

The first day was nothing short of spectacular - sunrise at the largest religious monument in the world, Angkor Wat.

This was an experience that will stay with me forever.

mekong river cruise reviews

There are over 70 temples of Angkor including Ta Prohm and the Bayon Temple and with Scenic you get a few days to explore, plus a once-in-a-lifetime private dinner set in a temple, complete with dancers and music.

Then it was time to board Scenic Spirit for the next nine nights of cruising. To be honest, I had never been on a river cruise before... and it was beyond anything I could have imagined.

The food, the staff, the suites - they were all amazing. This ship only takes 68 guests so you get a really intimate and individualised experience.

The cruise through Cambodia was a real variety of experiences. We visited religious monuments and met monks, explored markets in bustling port cities, and rode a tuk-tuk through a laid-back village.

But one of my favourite experiences was meeting some local kids and joining their after-school English class for an afternoon. They were very curious about the film crew and I, and were excited to practise their speaking skills with us.

After about three days of cruising, we arrived in the vibrant Cambodian capital of Phnom Penh.

There was all the hustle and bustle you'd expect but for me, it will always be the place where I faced the buffet of my nightmares.

I am absolutely terrified of spiders and in the central market, they sell them as snacks!!! This is when I said the words I never expected to say - "do you think I should try a tarantula?". It tasted exactly as I imagined and I can tell you, I plan to never do that again.

From Phnom Penh we continued along the Mekong, crossing the border into Vietnam. It was a nearly immediate change, much more urban and a lot more industry and aquaculture along the river.

Scenic prides itself on giving guests a true local experience and that includes visiting a local village and being invited into a traditional home, sharing a coffee.

The coffee in Vietnam is much stronger than here but it's also very sweet, as they mix in sweetened condensed milk. It was delicious.

Then it was to say goodbye to our luxury floating hotel as we were transported to Ho Chi Minh City. This is a busy city - just trying to cross the street was a feat. If you can't beat it then you may as well join it and Scenic offers the best way to explore - a night tour by Vespa. We experienced the thrill of the chaos with stops along the way to taste local specialities.

The city is a real mix of styles with traditional Vietnamese buildings beside grand colonial architecture, a legacy left by the French who ruled for over six decades. One of the most famous sites is the Independence Palace, where tanks hit the entrance gate in April 1975 when the war ended.

I was lucky enough to have a Scenic land journey included on our trip, and we headed north to Hoi An. This truly is one of the country's most beautiful cities and the best place to taste banh mi.

Hoi An is also the best place to have some clothes made - it is a town of tailors. You can basically get anything made in about 24 hours - I went for a suit, which was a bit hot to wear in Vietnam but great once I got home.

The two weeks I spent on this shoot were such a wonderful mix of learning and experiencing and eating that I can't help but smile when I think back to it. The people were so friendly and the tour options so diverse - it really was a trip for anyone.

AmaWaterways river cruise review: Charms of the Mekong

We have just returned from one of the most amazing holidays we have ever had, a 16-day 'Charms of the Mekong' tour with AmaWaterways.

We flew via Singapore to Ho Chi Minh City for a two night pre-cruise stay at the excellent Sofitel Saigon Plaza. The first afternoon we walked around the city to get our bearings, and the next day we enjoyed a morning tour of the city highlights and an afternoon visit to the Cu Chi Tunnels used during the Vietnam War.

The following day we transferred to the AmaDara , a beautifully appointed river ship with friendly staff and excellent food throughout the cruise.

AmaWaterways - AmaDara on the Mekong

Excursions during the cruise up the Mekong to Prek Kdam included visits to local markets, where we declined to buy the skinned rats and KFC (Kentucky Fried Crickets!), rice paper and silk workshops, tri-shaw rides, tuk tuk rides, ox cart rides and a blessing at a Buddhist Monastery. We also had some fascinating views of local life in the stilted and floating villages.

Floating village on Tonle Sap Lake, Cambodia

The visit that affected us all the most was the trip from Phnom Penh to the Killing Fields and the Genocide Museum. It was so humbling to hear what so many of the population had gone through during Pol Pot's rule, and at the prison (now the Museum) we met a delightful old gentleman of 87 who was one of the very few survivors.

Royal Palace in Phnom Penh, Cambodia

After we disembarked in Cambodia, we transferred by coach to Siem Reap and stayed at the beautiful Sofitel Angkor Phokeethra Golf and Spa Resort. The highlight of this section of the trip were the Angkor Temples and we got up at 4am to witness the sunrise over Angkor Wat, which is a 'must do'. Unfortunately the gods were not with us and it was cloudy, but still very atmospheric as it gradually became lighter and Angkor Wat was revealed.

Sunrise over Angkor Wat, Cambodia

We also visited the school that AmaWaterways support. It was lovely meeting the children who go there to learn English and we took some supplies from home as had been suggested as gifts for the school. The children were so keen to practise their English but the most asked question was "How old are you?"! Lots of the children wore English football shirts, and as we were the only English people on the tour they were very keen to talk football.

On to Hanoi and another excellent Sofitel. The traffic in Hanoi is unbelievable and our guide would shepherd us across the roads calling out "Sticky rice, sticky rice" so that we all stuck together, as none of the traffic stops for you, they just swerve round you!

Street in Hanoi, Vietnam

The last leg was a night on a boat on Halong Bay which was just spectacular. Then back to Hanoi for the last night before the flight home.

Ha Long Bay, Vietnam

The organisation by Ama could not be faulted. Our wonderful cruise manager Mr Thoai looked after everyone superbly, as did all the local guides who were with us for each leg. There were only 102 of us on board and about 50 for the pre- and post-cruise sections, and we were split into 4 groups for all the excursions so it did not feel as though we were being herded in huge numbers, and there was plenty of room on the coaches.

It was truly a wonderful trip, and our memories will stay with us forever.

How to Select a River Cruise as an Older Woman

Selecting a river cruise as an older woman requires careful consideration of several factors to ensure a comfortable, enjoyable, and enriching travel experience.

Destination and Itinerary

Consider the destinations and itinerary options offered by various river cruise lines. Think about your interests and preferences – whether you prefer exploring historic cities, scenic landscapes, cultural sites, or wildlife-rich regions. Research the ports of call, shore excursions, and onboard activities to find an itinerary that aligns with your interests.

Cruise Line and Ship

Research different river cruise lines and their reputations for quality, service, and amenities. Consider factors such as the size of the ship, onboard facilities (e.g., dining options, entertainment, wellness amenities), and the level of inclusivity (e.g., all-inclusive vs. à la carte pricing). Look for cruise lines that cater to mature travelers and offer amenities and activities tailored to your preferences.

Accommodations

Pay attention to the types of accommodations offered onboard, including cabin sizes, configurations, and amenities. Consider your preferences for comfort, privacy, and accessibility. Some river cruise ships offer special amenities for older travelers, such as accessible cabins, elevators, and mobility aids.

Season and Weather

Take into account the season and weather conditions of your chosen destination. Consider factors such as temperature, humidity, rainfall, and seasonal attractions or events. Depending on your preferences, you may prefer cruising during the shoulder seasons to avoid crowds and extreme weather conditions.

Solo Travel vs. Group Travel

Decide whether you prefer traveling solo or as part of a group. Some river cruise lines offer special programs and accommodations for solo travelers, while others cater to group travel with organized tours and activities. Consider your comfort level and social preferences when choosing the type of travel experience that best suits you.

Health and Mobility Considerations

Take into account any health or mobility considerations that may impact your travel experience. Consider factors such as accessibility of ports and excursions, onboard amenities for wellness and relaxation, and medical facilities and services available onboard. Be sure to communicate any special needs or requirements to the cruise line in advance.

Reviews and Recommendations

Read reviews and testimonials from other travelers, particularly older adults, who have experienced river cruises. Seek recommendations from friends, family, or travel advisors who can provide insights and advice based on their own experiences. Look for reviews that address factors such as service, accommodations, dining, and overall satisfaction.

By considering these factors and doing thorough research, you can select a river cruise that meets your preferences, interests, and travel expectations as an older woman.
