Metallica, SSE Hydro, Glasgow review

Dionne Kennedy plays Metallica bingo amongst fuel, fire and firefly drones

metallica tour glasgow

“JUST PLAY THE METAL,” a red-faced fifty-something shouts from the back of the SSE Hydro in Glasgow after Metallica’s seasoned front-man James Hetfield dedicates Moth Into Flame to the late Amy Winehouse.

You would’ve hit a full house of Metallica bingo within 20 minutes of the band taking the stage. Flames? Check. Hetfieldisms (yeeeeaaaahhh!). Check. Gloriously overwrought guitar solo? Check. Lars’ liberal take on traditional timekeeping? Check. Check. Ch-check.

I could easily, happily even, write a list of comedic things overheard at the sold-out WorldWired Tour : “Earplugs?! At a Metallica concert? Are you mental hen?” (another middle-aged man), but with an unexpectedly spectacular performance from the Californian metal icons, it would only detract from the matter at hand.

metallica tour glasgow

The veteran rockers have been touring for 36 years and despite some missteps along the way in the middle (Lou Reed collaboration, anyone?) they have retained a fairly consistent, generation-spanning fan base.

The most fervent fans, however, wouldn’t hesitate to admit things were edging on stale. In a bid to shake things up, the metal luminaries did what all ageing rock bands before them have done (I’m looking at you, U2) and produced a stadium tour, in the round.

A ninja-star shaped stage leaves Hetfield inches away from 10-year-old Robert, who is no doubt reeling today as he tells his friends of the joy of the front-man shaking his hand, handing him a set of plectrums and drumsticks (with bonus shout out to Robert’s dad for taking him along) and Scotland specific merchandise (a Scotland top emblazoned with Metallica logo) topped off a show smattered with stunning production values.

Am I the only one in here who thinks Metallica should come back to Glasgow more often than every eight fuckin' years?!?! Didn’t think so! pic.twitter.com/BAbIzoBsX1 — Lars Ulrich (@larsulrich) October 26, 2017

Cubes coil up and down from the ceiling during Seek and Destroy, displaying an impressive collection of Glasgow-based archive footage and ticket stubs, and with live cameras grabbing the rockers on stage – you don’t miss a minute of guitar-shredding greatness. If that wasn’t enough, firefly lights fly overheard, catching the eye of many a gawping metalhead mid-headbang.

A tight, polished set is somewhat expected from a hardened metal band of 36 years– and save for a little sloppiness on the classics – Metallica delivered. As always, leaping on stage to Morricone classic Ecstasy of Gold, they launch into latest single Hardwired, to the delight of even the fervidly old school fans.

Thank you Glasgow #Metallica #WorldWired #MetInGlasgow pic.twitter.com/yINuwo1J8w — Metallica (@Metallica) October 26, 2017

Unsurprisingly, the seminal hits are the true crowd pleasers, Welcome Home (Sanitarium) sees the hardcore standing mob truly get moving. For Whom the Bell Tolls is met with a roar of delight across the arena, and some eccentric air-guitar from fans, but newer material is sewn seamlessly throughout; “I knew it was good, but you guys knew it was gooder,” Hetfield tells the crowd.

Closing off a run of their biggest hits is Spit Out The Bone, like the Winehouse tribute, another song from 2016’s Hardwired… release which saw its first live airing earlier this week at their London show, playing to a record-breaking 22,211 fans at The O2.

With a litany of over-the-top visuals, the perfect combination of hits and new material and at least three costume changes (all forms of leather and/or studs, of course) they’ve raised the bar for metal bands everywhere. Metallica continue to blaze in all their fiery glory.

The tour continues October 28, Manchester Arena .

Metallica to premiere new album '72 Seasons' at UK cinemas

And cinemas across the globe

Metallica will premiere their new studio album ‘72 Seasons’ at cinemas in the UK and across the globe on Thursday 13th April.

Taking place on the eve of the release of the album, the worldwide listening party will allow Metallica fans to experience all 77 minutes of ‘72 Seasons’ in stunning surround sound.

Alongside the music, each of the 12 songs on ‘72 Seasons’ will feature its own video and commentary from James Hetfield , Kirk Hammett, Robert Trujillo and Lars Ulrich.

Metallica have joined forces with Trafalgar Releasing for the one night only event, and tickets go on sale from metallica.film on Thursday 2nd March.

Metallica announce '72 Seasons' global cinema event:

A statement about the cinema listening party reads: “72 Seasons - Global Premiere will feature exclusive interviews with Metallica, with the full band delving into the origins and stories behind the songs and accompanying music videos for every track on the album. The result will be a one-night-only opportunity for fans to experience 72 Seasons first and fully.

“There will also be a few surprises on the night that you won’t want to miss! We look forward to welcoming you all to this historic night in cinemas around the world.”

Metallica previously worked with Trafalgar Releasing for the worldwide cinematic release of Metallica and San Francisco Symphony: S & M² in October 2019.

“This is a monumental opportunity for Metallica fans to be the first to hear the new album. We are thrilled to be a part of this historical global moment—connecting Metallica with their fans once again,” says Kymberli Frueh, SVP Programming and Content Acquisitions, Trafalgar Releasing.

Featuring the lead singles ‘Lux Æterna’ and ‘Screaming Suicide’, ‘72 Seasons’ is released on Friday 14th April 2023 via the band’s Blackened Recordings imprint.

Supporting the album’s release, Metallica are embarking on their M72 world tour across Europe and North America this year and into 2024.

Including two headline sets at Download Festival , Metallica play two nights at every location with each No Repeat Weekend featuring two completely different setlists and support line-ups.

The tour will feature a bold new in-the-round stage design that relocates the famed Metallica Snake Pit to centre stage.

Also featuring performances from Ghost, Slipknot, Bring Me The Horizon, Within Temptation, Placebo, Disturbed, Evanescence and many more, tickets to Download Festival are on sale from Planet Rock Tickets now.

Metallica Launches 2024 Tour: Photos, Video and Set List

Metallica kicked off their 2024 tour with an emphatic performance in Munich, Germany on May 24.

The concert officially launched the latest leg of Metallica’s M72 World tour. The trek, which began in April 2023, sees the metal giants playing two nights at each stop, with completely different set lists from one performance to the next.

In Munich, Metallica came out of the gates firing with “Whiplash,” the powerful lead single from their 1983 debut album Kill ‘em All (see a clip of the opening song in the tweet below). The band followed with one of their best-loved tunes, “For Whom the Bell Tolls,” before delivering a rarity, “Of Wolf and Man.” The latter song, released on Metallica’s eponymous 1991 LP (known as the Black Album), hadn’t previously been performed during the M72 tour and was last played in 2021.

METALLICA's first show of 2024: See photos, videos and setlist

Following a multi-month layover, Metallica launched into another leg of their ongoing M72 World Tour this evening (May 24th) with an ultimately rain-soaked performance at Munich, Germany's Olympiastadion.

The first of the band's two shows at the venue kicked off with a naturally whip-crackin' "Whiplash," and featured an eras-spanning setlist that included Kill 'Em All thrashers like the opener and "Seek & Destroy," as well as globe-dominating Black Album hits including "Sad but True" and "Nothing Else Matters."

Also from the Black Album was a notable newbie to the M72 setlist: deeper cut "Of Wolf and Man," which the metal giants last played in 2021.

As with 2023's tour route, each two-night stop this year is being billed as a "No Repeat Weekend," meaning Munich metalheads showing up for Sunday's performance will be getting a fresh set of songs.

Likewise, while the Friday night performance featured opening sets from British metalcore vets Architects and Mammoth WVH, Sunday will find Five Finger Death Punch and Ice Nine Kills cutting it up ahead of 'Tallica.

In the meantime, you can see some fan-shot footage down below, where you'll also find the full 16-song setlist (courtesy of Setlist.fm ).

Metallica’s live performances as of late have been nothing short of exceptional . Beyond the band’s gargantuan stage and eye dazzling production, Metallica are continuing to perform with the same visceral passion and energy after all these years. Despite the four members having an average age of 60, James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, Kirk Hammett, and Rob Trujillo have retained much of their youthful qualities as musicians, and Hetfield’s voice has aged seemingly well with each album cycle. All that being said, Metallica’s recent two day residency in Munich, Germany, was full of some groundbreaking moments for the band.

Night one of the band’s performance included a formidable setlist with anthems and thrashers from the likes of “Whiplash,” “For Whom The Bell Tolls,” “The Memory Remains,” and “Fuel.” However, what made night one such a remarkable concert was Metallica’s determined mindset to give their all despite torrential downpours and lightning strikes throughout the evening.

The timing of the lightning strike as Metallica goes into the evening’s closure with “Master of Puppets” was impeccable, hence the viral clips from the band’s set that night. Beyond the pyro and stage lights, the added environmental features or ‘hazards’ one could say, goes to show how tenacious the band is in delivering a high quality rock concert time and time again. It’s likely the most ‘metal’ concert atmosphere the band has ever played, and with the fans’ high spirits throughout the night they seem to have fostered the same idea.

Night two of the Metallica’s Munich residency also saw another unexpected curveball, however, not by mother nature or outside forces. Among classic hits such as “Enter Sandman,” “Creeping Death,” and “Harvester of Sorrow,” Metallica’s pulled out a few new tracks from their latest album 72 Seasons. While the album was favored well by fans, singles “Lux Æterna,” “Screaming Suicide,” and “If Darkness Had A Son” have primarily been the most favored additions to the bands 72 Seasons tour setlist. However, on Sunday’s performance the band decided to take a chance at the most unique and arguably the best track on the album, “Inomorata.” Standing as the longest Metallica song to date at over 11 minutes in length, the song is a risky addition to the setlist, considering most fans aren’t there to see Metallica play new music, much less for over 11 minutes.

NSA Warns iPhone And Android Users To Turn It Off And On Again

Will trump go to prison here’s what happens now that he’s been found guilty in hush money case., can trump vote as a convicted felon here s what rights he could lose.

In a rather surprising turn however, the video footage of the song’s live debut says otherwise. Fans seem to rejoice at the song’s appearance in the evening’s set, and furthermore Metallica absolutely nailed the performance, especially the guitar harmony moments throughout the bridge — the effect is pure goosebumps and it’s hard to not imagine old school Metallica fans getting a kick out of this one.

Metallica are continuing the second leg of their 72 Seasons World later this week, with the next round of shows in Milan, Italy and a return to the states later in August.

Dropkick Murphys announce 2025 UK tour

The run includes a huge show at London's Alexandra Palace

Dropkick Murphys

Dropkick Murphys have confirmed a run of UK shows for early next year.

  • READ MORE: Dropkick Murphys on their livestreamed St Patrick’s Day gig: “It’s one of the most special shows we’ve ever played”

The iconic punk band will play five shows across one week in February 2025. They will make the first stop of the tour in Birmingham on February 4 before moving on to Glasgow, Manchester and Cardiff. They will then sign off with a huge show at London’s Alexandra Palace on February 8.

You can check out the full list of dates below and buy your tickets here .

Dropkick Murphys 2025 UK tour dates are:

FEBRUARY 2025 4 – Birmingham, O2 Academy 5 – Glasgow, O2 Academy  6 – Manchester, Academy 7 – Cardiff, Utilita Arena 8 – London, Alexandra Palace

The UK dates will follow a series of European festival shows, including appearances at France’s HellFest Open Air and Germany’s Rock Am Ring and a US tour booked for the autumn.

The announcement follows the release of two acoustic albums, 2022’s ‘This Machine Still Kills Fascists’ and 2023’s ‘Okemah Rising’, which saw them re-interpret the works of Woody Guthrie.

Recommended

The former included the single  ‘Two 6’s Upside Down’, described as  a “forlorn gambler’s lament, awash in love and loss, murder and punishment”.

Dropkick Murphys chose to retreat to Woody’s home state of Oklahoma to record the album, making a point to visit his hometown to retrace the musician’s steps. It had a profound effect on the creative process and making of the songs, with the band focusing a lot of their material on Woody’s unpublished lyrics.

The Boston-Irish band were due to play a  UK and Ireland tour in 2022  to mark 25 years since their formation. However, the gigs were postponed to 2023 due to complications relating to COVID.

Amyl and The Sniffers lay bare plans to rampage through the UK and Europe in November

Amyl and The Sniffers, May 26, 2024

Amyl and The Sniffers have shared details of a winter tour of the UK and Europe.

The Australian quartet's announcement comes in the wake, last week, of the release of their first new music in three years, single U Should Not Be Doing That .

The single features brilliantly biting lyrics such as " I was in Tokyo popping shit off / While you were down in Sydney tryin’ to get jacked off / I was in London, being the queen / And you were in my head saying you should not be doing tha t" " U Should Not Be Doing That makes me laugh," says vocalist Amy Taylor, "but it’s also in a way poking fun at the shock that people still feel at a little bit of skimpy clothing, and the bitchy high school way that the music community still is (yes I’m talking to you random 40-year-old metalheads sitting around a table doing lines and bitching about a 28-year-old chick in a band for wearing shorts and “selling out”) but it mainly makes me laugh.

"It’s unconscious and meant nothing at the time of writing it but now I think it’s a comedic way of rubbing the dog’s nose in its own dog piss after it wee’d on your favourite rug or something."

Following their appearance at the Bearded Theory festival this past weekend, the band have announced the following shows:

DUFF MCKAGAN Announces November 2024 U.S. Tour

Duff McKagan is celebrating today's release of his double live record "Tenderness Live In Los Angeles" by announcing the U.S. leg of his "Lighthouse Tour '24" in support of his critically acclaimed latest studio album "Lighthouse" . Beginning November 4 at Boston, Massachsetts's Paradise and ends November 20 at Seattle, Washington's Showbox. The full itinerary is below. The artist pre-sale begins on June 4 and general tickets go on sale June 7 at 10 a.m. local time.

"Lighthouse Tour '24" dates:

Sep. 30 - Dublin, Ireland - Dublin Academy Oct. 02 - Glasgow, Scotland - Oran Mor Oct. 03 - Manchester, UK - Manchester Academy 2 Oct. 05 - London, UK - Islington Assembly Hall Oct. 07 - Utrecht, Netherlands - TivoliVredenburg Oct. 08 - Cologne, Germany - Kantine Oct. 09 - Munich, Germany - Freiheitshalle Oct. 11 - Brno, Czech Republic, Sono Centrum Oct. 13 - Warsaw, Poland - Stodola Oct. 14 - Berlin, Germany - Heimathafen Oct. 16 - Milan, Italy - Magazzini Generali Oct. 17 - Solothurn, Switzerland - Kofmeh Oct. 19 - Liege, Belgium - OM Oct. 20 - Paris, France - Trianon Oct. 22 - Stockholm, Sweden – Nalen

Nov. 04 - Boston, MA - Paradise Nov. 06 - New York, NY - Le Poisson Rouge Nov. 08 - Chicago, IL - Outset Nov. 10 - Denver, CO - Bluebird Theater Nov. 13 - Los Angeles, CA - El Rey Nov. 18 - Portland, OR - Aladdin Theater Nov. 20 - Seattle, WA - Showbox

Recorded June 13, 2019 at Los Angeles' historic El Rey Theatre just days following "Tenderness" 's May 2019 release, "Tenderness Live From Los Angeles" sees McKagan taking an intimate journey through his own canon of songs along with a few deeply personal cover versions, backed by three-time Grammy Award -winning "Tenderness" producer Shooter Jennings and his band. "Tenderness Live From Los Angeles" is heralded by today's premiere of an electrifying rendition of "River Of Deceit" , originally performed by McKagan 's close friends, Seattle supergroup MAD SEASON — comprised of guitarist Mike McCready ( PEARL JAM ),drummer Barrett Martin ( SCREAMING TREES ) and the late Layne Staley ( ALICE IN CHAINS ) and bassist John Baker Saunders ( THE WALKABOUTS ) — and available everywhere now.

"It was such a complete pleasure and honor to be able to work with Shooter Jennings and his stellar band for the recording of the songs that became the 'Tenderness' record," says Duff McKagan . "Having Aubrey and John playing fiddle and pedal steel guitar on the tracks, really led the music in a brand new direction for me. I strive for change and growth in life, and these guys ushered me into a brand new musical world. This relationship was made more special, when Shooter and the band agreed to tour 'Tenderness' with me. Remember, Ted Kemp , Jamie Douglas , Aubrey Richmond , John Scheffler and Shooter had been touring for years together. They are a tight-as-hell unit. I won the lottery!

"This live recording from the El Rey in Los Angeles showcases not only the songs on the record, but some cover songs we started to fold into the live set as we toured. We've highlighted a couple tracks from this show — 'Tenderness' being one, of course, and our version of the MAD SEASON song 'River Of Deceit' . Such a beautiful song written by guys from back home that I know now, and a couple who are no longer with us. It feels like a celebration to me. All of these live shows we did on that tour felt like a shedding, a prayer to better things, and a beautiful coming together of all you bad motherfuckers."

"One of the highlights of my life was making 'Tenderness' with Duff McKagan ," says Shooter Jennings . "A thoughtful songwriter and even more thoughtful person. Touring with Duff checked another box of personal dreams come true! We had a blast out on the road. "I remember playing the El Rey. The crowd was packed. I remember leaving the stage feeling like we had done something really special.

"Getting to mix the album all these years later was such a treat. To be able to mix it on the 1976 Frank Demedio custom API console (the same console that Prince recorded and mixed 'Purple Rain' on) in legendary Sunset Sound Studio 3 (a.k.a. Snake Mountain),was like being able to distill a righteous memory through a flawless diamond. Sitting in that studio listening to the band play through those big speakers allowed for me to get lost in the music and let it guide me to bring this experience to record players everywhere!"

Newly mixed in the legendary Sunset Sound Studio 3 (a.k.a. Snake Mountain) by Jennings using the famed custom API console on which Prince recorded and mixed "Purple Rain" , "Tenderness Live From Los Angeles" is further highlighted by powerful takes on THE CLASH 's classic "Clampdown" and such GUNS N' ROSES fan favorites as "You Ain't The First" , "Dust N' Bones" and "Dead Horse" . But at its heart, the set casts a spotlight on McKagan 's own striking songcraft, with live versions of tracks originally featured on "Tenderness" , including the volatile rocker "Chip Away" , which earned extraordinary praise from the maestro himself Bob Dylan , who recently declared the song a personal favorite.

Named by Loudwire as one of 2019's "50 Best Rock Albums," "Tenderness" marked a powerful new chapter for the ever-evolving McKagan , taking on societal ills and his own personal transgressions against a rich sonic backdrop of Americana-fueled arrangements. Fueled by such songs as the nuanced "It's Not Too Late" and the deeply hopeful title track, "Tenderness" was met by widespread acclaim from such outlets as Rolling Stone , which hailed it in a three-and-a-half (out of four)-starred rave as "an album full of beauty and heart…It's music of conscience, heavy songs with a light touch." "A superb set of roots-rock ruminations," declared Entertainment Weekly . "With Jennings 's help, McKagan crafted a mix of rock and Americana evoking both the Glimmer Twins and the Gutter Twins." " McKagan takes a hard look at some of the most important issues facing our country right now...equal parts ROLLING STONES , Lou Reed and 'Lies' -era GUNS N' ROSES ," wrote Consequence .

"Tenderness Live From Los Angeles" follows last year's release of McKagan 's equally acclaimed third solo album, "Lighthouse" , available everywhere now.
