This Is My South
A travel guide to the Southern USA
Where to See Live Music in Athens, Georgia
July 10, 2020 By Caroline Eubanks Leave a Comment
Athens , Georgia is one of the South’s best music cities , helping countless artists to make their names and launching the careers of rock bands like R.E.M. , Widespread Panic, and The B-52’s . In later years, Of Montreal, Danger Mouse, Drive-By Truckers, and Corey Smith called the city home.
The “Classic City” hosts annual music festivals like AthFest and Wildwood Revival. But during any time of year, you can catch an up-and-coming act at one of these venues.
Looking for even more music venues? Visit Athens has a self-guided music tour of the city.
40 Watt Club
The legendary 40 Watt Club has had a few locations around Athens over the years but has been at its current spot for a while. It is named for a single lightbulb that hung in one of the spaces.
But it has been in its current space since 1991, making it the city’s longest-running venue. Among the many artists to grace the stage are Pavement, Run DMC, OK Go, Nirvana, Sonic Youth, and Salt ‘n’ Pepa.
Caledonia Lounge
Opened in one of 40 Watt’s previous locations, Caledonia Lounge hosts alternative and indie rock bands. They have both up-and-coming and established bands as well as themed nights. The cover charge is usually $10 or less.
The Foundry
Located at the Graduate Athens Hotel , The Foundry is named for the original purpose of the building, an iron mill. Live music is offered nightly, best seen from the stage level or balcony seats. They also have a full restaurant with Southern favorites.
Editor’s Note: The Foundry has since closed for good but the hotel is still operating.
Georgia Theatre
The Georgia Theatre was opened by Hap Harris and Sam Smartt in 1978 in an old movie theater. Over the years, it’s had many memorable performances. The Police played during their first American tour. It closed in 1980 but reopened in 1989, signaling the golden age of the venue.
Bands like Widespread Panic, Hootie and the Blowfish, and the Dave Matthews Band performed. R.E.M. even shot the video for “Shiny Happy People” in the space. Despite a fire in 2009, it’s been restored to its former glory, hosting big-name acts of all genres.
Hendershot’s
By day Hendershot’s is a popular coffee shop with students determinedly finishing assignments on their laptops. But by night, java is switched out for something stronger. Founded in 2010 by a local musician, the stage hosts national and regional musicians and artists.
Looking for a place to stay while in Athens? The Graduate Athens and Hotel Indigo Athens are both within walking distance of these venues.

The Authentic Music Experience
Where Legends Are Born
The Legendary Athens Music Scene
It would be a southern sin to miss a minute of it.
While not quite the size of its nearby Southern city of Atlanta, the “quiet” little college town of Athens, Georgia has for decades been the progenitor and steadfast home of many an internationally influential band–perhaps most famously, REM, the B52s, and Widespread Panic–giving this small downtown near the University of Georgia campus the nickname, “the Liverpool of the South,” for the impact, influence, and talent that seems to sprout and grow like the infamously stubborn Southern vine known as Kudzu.
The confluence of great venues like the 40 Watt and the Georgia Theatre, along with WUOG University of Georgia college radio, local record shops like Wuxtry and labels like Kindercore have, over the years, brewed an intoxicating and somehow-in-the-moment-nostalgic libation sure to thrill and inspire you.
Here’s a Little Help from Your Friends
You’re right in the middle of it all. Go ahead. Treat yourself to the taste of one of the greatest music scenes in the country.

Georgia music history to be showcased at Athens’ Classic Center
Credit: Nell Carroll
ATHENS — Otis Redding, James Brown, R.E.M. and OutKast, among others, will soon share a spotlight.
Georgia’s rich and diverse musical heritage will be on display in downtown Athens later this year in the soon-to-open Classic Center Arena.
Exhibits will showcase the beginnings of soul and rhythm and blues in Macon and Augusta, the rise of alternative rock and new wave in Athens, and Atlanta’s southern hip-hop scene, The Classic Center announced in a press release.
“We are partnering with local artists and (the University of Georgia) to create an experience that looks and feels all about music,” said Paul Cramer, chief executive of The Classic Center.
Some of the items planned for display were previously housed in the Georgia Music Hall of Fame in Macon. When the museum closed its doors in 2011, many items and documents were stored in the UGA special collections library building and vault in Athens. That became part of the broader Georgia Music Collections, the state’s most diverse and extensive historical music collection.
“The exhibits (in The Classic Center) will be made up of items from the Georgia Music Collections,” said Ryan Lewis, UGA curator for the music collection. “Some of the items from the Hall of Fame collection (previously in Macon) will be included alongside items from other collections as well as a large number of new items that have been added to the collections in the last year.”
The Classic Center began construction last year on an arena project that will upgrade seating capacity to 8,500 for concerts, sporting events, conventions and more. A professional hockey team — the Athens Rock Lobsters, named after a B-52s song — will begin its first season of play with the arena as its home in October.
The music exhibits will be located in the arena’s concourse. Georgia State Rep. Houston Gaines and State Senator Bill Cowsert helped obtain $2.6 million in state funds to support the initiative. Dozens of artists will be featured, including the B-52s, Widespread Panic, Chet Atkins, Danger Mouse and also Capricorn Records and Atlanta Pop Festivals.
“We have some amazing items from the full history of Georgia music that will be on display this fall,” Lewis said. “It will be awesome for the city and the state.”

How The Castellows Use Passion For Horses To Blaze Trials In Country Music
Ellie , Lily and Powell Balkcom reminisced on their experience growing up in a small town in Southwest Georgia. They were surrounded by music, family and horses for as long as they can remember.
The sisters were often surrounded by family. They played music at their hometown church, took the mic during family karaoke nights, and sang “happy birthday” to one another in “full-on harmonies.” They “just did it for fun and didn’t know any different because it was something that we were always surrounded by,” the group said in a recent interview with iHeartCountry. Their professional aspirations shifted, however, when they began writing their own music rather than solely covering songs by other artists.
Lily remembered getting a call from Ellie, who was away at school in Athens, Georgia.
“She called me, and she was like, ‘Lily, I wrote a banger.’ It’s like 8 o’clock in the morning,” Lily recalled. “I thought she was talking about like an essay for school, and I was like, ‘oh, let me hear it,’ and she started singing (and playing) on the guitar. And the service at home is really bad because we live in the middle of nowhere, but I could hear the lyrics — not quite the melodies — but I could hear what she was saying, and I was like, ‘we got a gig coming up at the Georgia Theatre in like two weeks. Teach it to me, and let’s sing that song.’ And in between that time that she wrote that song and sang it to me, and we played [the opening gig] at the Georgia Theatre. …We thought it was so much more fun singing original music than it was (performing covers).”
Now, the sisters are known as neo-traditional country trio The Castellows . They've since moved to Nashville, Tennessee, and released their debut EP, A Little Goes A Long Way , earlier this year, introducing themselves with an authentic project that harkens to traditional country sounds with a modern twist. Ellie (lead guitar), Lily (vocals) and Powell (banjo) are also looking ahead to joining Little Big Town and Sugarland on tour in the fall. In the midst of it all, the sisters are still writing music together and drawing inspiration from their everyday lives and upbringing, including incorporating their love for horses in a unique way.
Ellie, Lily and Powell blended their passion for music with their lifelong love for horses when they teamed up with songwriters Erik Dylan , Brandon Hood and Ava Suppelsa to pen three original songs that serve as a tribute to the bond horse owners share with their beloved animals. The six of them went on a retreat on a Tennessee farm – writing music and horseback riding – to pair their passions for storytelling through song with caring for horses to create the “Everything for the Ride” soundtrack. The Castellows and horse care experts Farnam joined together for the music-led initiative to bring the original songs to life, including with a photoshoot and music videos filmed at a Middle Tennessee farm, outside of Nashville.
The Castellows, part of the CMT Next Women of Country Class of 2024, said as they grew up in Southwest Georgia, they took breaks from homeschool to meet up with nearby cousins and ride horses together. They told iHeartCountry that horses have always been a part of their lives, and they’ve been riding horses since childhood. They fondly remember it as “a really great, awesome way to grow up.” Lily said caring for horses throughout their lives taught the trio “a lot about dealing with situations that are bigger than yourself. … we broke bones and we fell off and got back on. I feel like it teaches you a lot of patience,” and responsibility. A press release from Farnam notes that “the sister trio learned the hard work, grit, joy, and accomplishment that accompanies being a songwriter,” thanks to their upbringing around horses. The Castellows will debut the new songs written with Dylan, Hood and Suppelsa throughout the summer.
Ellie, Lily and Powell wrote or co-write six of the seven tracks on A Little Goes A Long Way , apart from one cover, “Hurricane,” which was released by Levon Helm more than four decades ago. The Castellows have performed their rendition of the song during live performances for several years; however, it was a “completely different” experience recording it in the studio. Ellie said “the studio has really made us better live performers,” crediting the process of getting “nitty gritty” with arrangements and “the meticulous nature” of recording the project. The Castellows also expect to learn a lot from Little Big Town and Sugarland when they join the two groups on the road on the “ Take Me Home Tour ,” kicking off on October 24 in Greenville, South Carolina. See the trio’s 2024 tour stops below.
