Taking the Napa Valley Wine Train

napa valley wine train trip

The Napa Valley Wine Train runs from downtown Napa to St. Helena and back, serving meals and wine on the trip. Some trips also include winery stops.

The thing the Wine Train does best is to market itself. You've probably heard about it. In fact, if you're like a lot of other people, you may think it's the best thing you could do when you're in Napa Valley. That may be more hype than it deserves.

Despite the romance of the idea, you're stuck inside, looking out the windows, watching the scenery pass as if you were watching television. You can't stop at that cute winery you saw or get out to take photos of the vineyards.

Their food is mediocre at best. They serve two seatings per trip, which means you have to move to or from the dining car in the middle of the trip.

Your time and money are better spent on hiring a private tour guide or touring on your own. However, people with limited mobility or those who care more for atmosphere and selfies than cuisine may enjoy it, and some people find travel by train very romantic.

Reviewers on Yelp seem to like the train — and so do reviewers at Tripadvisor, but many of them rave about their entire trip to Napa and not just the wine train experience.

Tips for the Napa Wine Train

These tips will help you make the most of your Napa Wine Train experience and avoid unpleasant surprises:

  • In the winter months, the sun sets early, and the dinner train travels mostly in the dark. It might be romantic, but don't expect to see vineyards and wineries as you travel.
  • Wine is included only with special packages. Otherwise, you'll have to buy it on board.
  • While the Napa Valley Wine Train claims that tips are optional, what they really mean is that extra tips above their 12% service charge are optional.
  • The Napa Valley Wine Train is 100% non-smoking. That includes the station, train cars and outside observation decks.
  • Casual dress is fine anytime.
  • Children are welcome, but with many restrictions. Strollers and child carriers are not allowed on board. Toilets are tiny, and diaper changing is not permitted in the rail cars. Toddlers may also get restless during such a long trip, and they cannot move around without adult supervision.

Napa Valley Wine Train Options

The Napa Valley Wine Train isn't cheap. A train trip alone is the least expensive way to go. You'll pay more for a meal, and there's an extra charge for the winery tours offered with the lunch trips.

For a dinner trip in the Vista Dome Car, you'll spend as much as you might in a fancy San Francisco restaurant. And that doesn't include beverages, service charges, and tips. For the same price, you could see the scenery on a drive up Highway 29 and back to Napa on Silverado Trail, enjoy a tasting and food pairing at Signorello Vineyards and dine like a king at one of the area's top-end restaurants.

The Wine Train offers a variety of lunch and dinner options. The Pullman cars seat 130 people at a time, with two seatings on the three-hour trip. If you choose this option for an afternoon trip, it's best to get the later seating so you can watch the scenery before the sun sets and eat on the way back.

Other special trips, winemaker dinners, murder mystery trips, full-moon trips, and seasonal excursions are available.

What You Need to Know About the Napa Valley Wine Train

The Wine Train makes four to six trips weekly, but the schedule varies by season. Cost varies by type of trip, and whether you have a meal. You can get their current times and prices on their website . Reservations are required.

You will spend two to three hours on the train, but allow extra time to get there and get on board before departure time. The station is at 1275 McKinstry Street, Napa, CA, not far from the Oxbow Market.

Hop aboard the Napa Valley Wine Train for an exhilarating scenic adventure. One of the few vintage passenger trains still riding the rails, this Napa Valley train offers an amazing journey you'll savor for a lifetime.

Ride the Rails Through Scenic Napa Valley

Why not turn the driving over to the train conductor? You can relax and drink in the postcard views for this leisurely three-hour ride through the picturesque valley.

Departing from the McKinstry Street Station in downtown Napa, the wine train runs to St. Helena and back, usually without a stop. However, if you want to visit a winery along the way, some Napa wine train tours include a stop or two.

Five towns in the valley can be seen from the train: Napa, Yountville, Oakville, Rutherford and St. Helena. You'll also spot a number of wineries nestled among the vineyards.

napa valley wine train

Nearly a century old, the Pullman railroad cars have been lavishly renovated, yet kept their vintage charm.

Traveling through the valley at about 20 miles per hour, the 36-mile round trip is a feast for your eyes and palate.

All trips include lunch or dinner -- with wine, of course.

The dining cars have two seating times for each trip. Guests who dine on the northbound trip will retire to luxury passenger cars to relax and take in the scenery while they enjoy coffee and dessert. Guests in the second seating spend the first half of the journey sipping cocktails and nibbling on appetizers in the passenger cars before heading to the dining cars for the southbound journey.

Choose from three dining cars for unique options...each has its own kitchen and menu freshly prepared by on-board chefs.

The Vista Dome dining car (not shown here) offers the best views from this train, and is beautifully detailed with mahogany and brass.

Lunch tours start about $225, and you'll pay more for special gourmet meals and events. It's pricey, but part of the whole luxury passenger train experience  you'll be telling your friends and family about for years to come.

Travel in Luxury on the Napa Valley Wine Train

Elegant china, polished silver and crisp, white linens offer a nostalgic glimpse of a grand travel-by-rail era.

Do you remember a time when travel was enjoyable and unhurried, not a chore? I don't either. That's why I treasure trips like this, surrounded with glamorous style of a bygone era...indulged with sumptuous food, wine, friendly service...and savoring it all with stunning landscape of the valley.

To me, the Wine Train offers the best Napa Valley has to offer, plus a chance to experience a preserved piece of history.

Uh, oh. I could get used to this.

What to Expect from Your Journey

The Napa Valley Wine Train purchased their first railcar in 1987. All of the cars on this historic train are from 1915. Built by the Pullman Standard Company, they were originally in use by Northern Pacific Railway.

After two years of work, four railcars took their inaugural journey on September 16, 1989.

Napa Valley Wine Train

Today, the Napa Valley Wine Train consists of 16 railcars and 4 engines. Although some people confuse it for a touring train just for wine tasting, it is mainly a restaurant on train tracks that rolls through the valley.

Their Executive Chef and his team prepare all of the meals on board. There are four kitchen railcars.

They serve up dishes with fresh ingredients and offer some of the tastiest meals in the valley. For each meal selection, you will choose from a selection of three to four dishes per course.

Since it is a high-end restaurant, they will work with you if you need modifications for your diet. You just need to let them know ahead of time, so they have what they need on board for your meal. When you enter, just let any of the attendants know which person in your party ordered a dietary specific meal.

The cool thing about this experience is that you also have the chance to watch the chef and his staff in action. The main kitchen railcar has a large window and viewing area, so you can see them create the perfect meal.

What to Expect the Day of Your Journey

Your journey starts with check-in at the Napa Valley Wine Train depot in downtown Napa at 1275 McKinstry St, Napa, CA 94559. Check-in starts 45 to 60 minutes before your journey. Once you are finished with that, you can roam around the historic depot until you hear the boarding call.

They begin boarding about 30 minutes before the train leaves the station. As long as you are still in the depot, you will not miss the boarding call.

Crossing the Railroad Tracks in Napa

Some packages include private tables and others include up to four people at one table. All of the tables are next to the windows, so each seat has an amazing view of Napa Valley.

The experiences vary slightly, but after you are seated, you are welcome to order a glass of wine. Non-alcoholic drinks such as soda and water are included with your ticket price, so you are welcome to order one of those beverages also.

Your journey begins after everyone is on board. During the first 10 minutes, you will roll through the city of Napa. After that, you will be surrounded by vineyards and wineries for the remainder of your journey.

All experiences are round trip, so your journey begins and ends at the Napa Valley Wine Train station in downtown Napa.

Napa Valley Wine Train Experiences

There are several daily Napa Valley Wine Train experiences. Some offer lunch, others afternoon tea, and others an evening dinner. There are also a handful of special events that run a few times each year.

1. Vista Dome

The Champagne Vista Dome is a two-story vintage dining car with the best views of Napa Valley. The ride is luxurious thanks to the train's plush booths and curved glass windows that let you admire the landscape, sunset, or stars, depending on the time you choose your tour.

The Gourmet Express is a less expensive option. This experience includes lunch or dinner in one of their one-story antique Pullman rail cars. This tour includes a complimentary welcome glass of sparkling wine in addition to the multi-course meal.

This dining option runs from about $205 to $295 per person. For these seatings, you may share a table with another party.

3. Afternoon Tea x Chandon

For those looking for a lighter dining experience, this is a great new option. You'll start out with a welcome glass of Chandon's Garden Spritz cocktail. Then, you'll savor a traditional afternoon tea service—complete with a selection of fine teas, finger sandwiches, mini desserts, and more.

This tour offers the elegance of wine country dining as well. You'll get a sparkling wine toast with cheese, and small portions of soup and salad, to round out the local culinary experience. The tour runs on the lunchtime schedule of 11:30 am to 2:30 pm, and costs $255 to $325 per person.

4. Tasting on the Rails

This culinary experience on the recently refurbished 1915 Pullman lounge car is the ultimate adventure in food and wine pairings. You will enjoy a total of seven delicious courses, including an amuse bouche and three duo plates.

These courses are paired with seven premier local wines from Charles Krug, Chandon, Trefethen, Tate, Beaulieu Vineyard, Belle Glos and Ghost Block.

The three-hour lunchtime tour runs Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. The evening dinner option runs on Saturdays. It costs $405 to $525 per person.

Half-Day Tours

The half-day tours include a stop at one winery. You will enjoy a multi-course meal onboard, disembark to do a tour at a winery, and then re-board the train to return to the station at the end. These journeys last between 3 and 4 hours.

5. Grgich Hills Estate Tasting

This includes a two-hour train ride, lunch, and a private tour of Grgich Hills Winery. The owner, Mike Grgich, is one of the best winemakers in the valley and famous for the winning Chardonnay from the 1976 Judgement of Paris .

Your tour starts with a welcome glass of sparkling wine, then a multi-course meal on the train, followed by a one-hour seated tasting at Grgich Hills. You will then finish with a nice dessert onboard the train as you head back to the station.

This tour leaves at 11:30 am and tickets cost around $360 to $425 per person.

Full-Day Tours

The full-day tours last about 6 hours and include stops at Napa Valley wineries. All include a gourmet multi-course lunch on the train.

6. The Legacy Tour

This tour includes three one-hour wine tastings. The tour begins with check-in at 9:45 am, and the train leaves at 10:15 am.

Your day starts with breakfast on your way to the first stop and photo opportunity, the iconic 1949 Napa Valley welcome sign. You will then enjoy your first one-hour immersive wine tasting aboard an open-air car.

You will then reboard at 12 pm and enjoy your second course as the train makes the 30-minute trip to Charles Krug. This tour runs until 1:45 pm. You'll hop on board again to enjoy your third course as you ride the train to V. Sattui Winery.

You will spend just over an hour here and return to the train at around 3:20 pm. Your final course is dessert, which you will enjoy as you ride the train back to the Napa Valley Wine Train station.

You will return around 4:15 pm. This tour is $595 to $775 depending on your booking date.

Special Events

Murder Mystery : If you love murder mysteries, then hop aboard the Napa Valley Wine Train for one of their Murder Mystery dinners. These 2.5-hour rides include both excitement and elegance as you roll through the vineyards. You'll also have a multiple-course gourmet meal.

They are $395 to $600 per person depending on the date and theme.

What Should You Wear on the Napa Valley Wine Train?

The Napa Valley Wine Train is an upscale restaurant experience. While they don't have a strict dress code, I do recommend that you dress up a little.

You can wear business casual attire or class it up even more in the evening. If you plan to do one of the trains with the tastings at local wineries, make sure to wear casual or comfortable shoes. You will be standing on and off for up to an hour at a time.

Here are a few more tips on what to expect from the weather throughout the year, so you can pack accordingly.

Is the Wine Train Good for Kids?

If you are planning on visiting Napa with family, you will find that kids are welcome on the Napa Valley Wine Train. There are certain tours that include kid pricing and options.

A couple of things to note if you plan on riding the train with your kids. They do not allow the kids to run around the train and/or be unattended. If you have a little one that has a hard time sitting still, you may want to reconsider this as an option.

I think kids will enjoy it as there are great views out the windows, and who doesn't love riding around on a train!

For the Gourmet Express lunch and dinner packages, passengers will either enjoy their multi-course gourmet meals first and then be led to the nearby lounge car to relax and enjoy the scenic views, or vice versa, depending on whether they booked the early or late seating option.

For tours that include winery visits, guests will be transported to each winery after or in between courses to enjoy exclusive tastings and an in-depth tour of the grounds.

Book tickets on the Napa Valley Wine Train Early

The Wine Train is a very popular activity for locals and visitors alike, so they recommend booking tours as early as possible since tickets tend to sell out quickly. For a fun photo opportunity, head to the balcony on the train’s caboose and enjoy the views!

“If you have any questions about the region, the train, the food or wine, ask one of our team members. They’re all very knowledgeable about Napa Valley and the Wine Train and more than happy to help,” said Davis.

What to Wear on the Napa Wine Train

“Although there’s no dress code for the Wine Train, we encourage passengers to wear attire for a typical day in wine country, leaning more toward dressier than casual,” said Davis. Depending on which experience you book, you may be visiting a winery for a tour and tasting, so comfortable shoes are also recommended. Dinner trains tend to be slightly more formal than lunch. Also, remember to bring an extra layer to make sure you’re warm enough aboard the train.

Friends take selfies on The Napa Valley Wine Train.

Is experiencing the wine train a memorable adventure?

“Absolutely. The Napa Valley Wine Train is one of the few active historic passenger railroads in the U.S. and offers the chance to experience a modern take on luxury rail travel from the beginning of the 20th century,” said Davis.

“The train transports passengers to a pivotal moment in Napa Valley’s history with its antique Pullman rail cars, which have been faithfully restored with Honduran mahogany paneling, brass accents, etched glass partitions and plush armchairs.”

F avorite Napa Wine Train Experience?

“The moments of delight along the journey are my favorite,” said Davis. “Things like catching the fog playfully teasing the tops of the mountains while sipping on a glass of wine, catching yourself relaxing enough to truly enjoy intimate time with the ones you love in a way that is hard to find in our busy days or having your expectations exceeded on a dish you are enjoying – because you did not think train food could be that good. These are a few favorites.”

Kids can ride the train too! (select journeys)

Kids are welcome on several of the Wine Train’s journeys, including lunch and dinner for the Gourmet Express and Vista Dome packages. We also host many exciting holiday events for Thanksgiving, Easter, Fourth of July and more that are unique ways to celebrate with the whole family. The Wine Train is a memorable outing year-round with their variety of journeys, but Davis recommends guests visit during the spring. Napa Valley tends to be less busy during these months compared to the summer, and the longer daylight provides the perfect opportunity to see the sun set over world-famous vineyards on their dinner journeys. The weather is also more moderate compared to other seasons.

Napa Valley Wine Train History

According to Davis, the railroad the train runs on was built and operated by Samuel Brannan in 1864 as a tourist railroad to take visiting San Franciscans as they arrived by ferry in south Napa to his resort town Calistoga. In 1885 the Southern Pacific Railroad Company purchased the line and it continued in operation for the next 102 years. In 1987, the line was sold to the Napa Valley Wine Train. On September 16, 1989, the Wine Train took its inaugural passenger trip and has been steadily running through the valley ever since.

In 2015, Noble House Hotels & Resorts, Ltd. – a collection of luxury hotels and resorts – entered a partnership with Brooks Street, a California-based real estate development and investment company, for the purchase of the historic and iconic Napa Valley Wine Train. The purchase deepens Noble House’s roots in Northern California, expanding its portfolio to include attractions in the destinations its hotels call home.

When arriving at the station you can relax with some drinks while waiting to board the train. I was amazed at how clean the station and train were. The bathrooms were very clean and everything was nicely put together. We were served a multiple-course gourmet meal and welcomed with sparkling wine on board. The food was delicious, the salmon and beef short rib was very favorable. Max, Sara, and Jorge were very nice and attentive the whole time. They made sure we were having fun, and that we had what we needed promptly. Everything was perfect, we enjoyed ourselves immensely. Read more Written April 24, 2024
  • swatkins98 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Loved the wine train We took the legacy tour, and Marina and Jorge were excellent hosts! I highly recommend and would love to ride with this whole crew again! Our conductor was also such a personable guy and fun to chat with in between stops. The food was delicious and definitely welcome after tasting so many wines throughout the day. The stop at Charles Krug was beautiful, and our host, Sam, was very polite and personable. It was fascinating to hear the winery’s history in addition to tasting their wines. I was pleasantly surprised to taste a Malbec while there! I did not love the stop at V. Sattui. I don't think our host there does many of the tours since he kept referring to our group as "children." After hearing that a half dozen times, I just wanted the tasting to be over. I almost felt that way when he started the tour by bragging that weddings were for brides with a minimum 5 carats. Yes, beautiful grounds but I could do without the pretentiousness. Overall, it was still a fun experience! We loved the ride and sightseeing! The first stop at the Napa sign was fun even if we couldn’t get off the train since Jorge kept us busy with the wine train tastings. Read more Written April 20, 2024

The dining cars had just been refurbished, and were warm and inviting while remaining true to the age of the train. Our server and Maitre'd were engaging, energetic, and clearly took great pride in creating a memorable day for guests. We started with a sparking wine toast and brunch on the way to our first stop. We then stopped at the iconic Napa Valley sign for photos and a wine tasting on board the open air car. Then proceeded to 2 vineyards, Charles Krug and V. Stattui. At each of those stops we were granted a tour of the grounds and tastings. As we traveled we were served a delicious lunch, a cheese course, and a decadent dessert on the way back. The whole day felt luxurious while remaining approachable and fun. Read more Written April 10, 2024

We are both wine and train nerds so this experience was a perfect combo. We got to enjoy the winery views for the first half and then as the sun set, got to enjoy all the details of the Pullman car. The food was delicious. My husband is a foodie and I eat like a toddler and we both enjoyed the food. Staff were incredibly friendly and helpful but also gave us space to just “be”. Note about the price: It is worth the price. We decided this would be our one big splurge on the trip and we wouldn’t buy as much wine on our trip to afford it. We are glad we spent the money. I highly recommend it if your budget will allow. Read more Written April 7, 2024

The food was gourmet and excellent. the staff was so engaging and fun and gave lots of great details about the different wineries and the area that we went through. We started with a late breakfast of eggs benedict over round hash browns and a wonderful little salad. Maria, our train host, gave us a lot of unique facts about the places we were seeing out the window as we ate our brunch. We then stopped at the Napa Valley Sign and Jorge explained the different wines we were having during the wine tasting. Then we sat down for lunch as we watched the valley go by. Both the vegetarian lunch option my wife had as well as my pork tenderloin were beyond tasty. The two vineyards we went to were unique and the tastings were fun! Finally, as we went back down the valley we were served a rich dessert and had a dance lesson from Jorge. This experience was top notch! It is a six hour experience that is well worth the money. Additionally we have nothing but good things to say about the staff as Maria and Jorge shined and were very lovely! Read more Written April 1, 2024

Loved the train and the beautiful carriages. Enjoyed the welcome drink - although would have preferred the sparkling wine to have been from California. Staff on train were warm and friendly. Ended up making friends on the train as the day went on, then ended up having a dance in the end dance carriage on the way home! The train is beautiful and the service was great. The food was good, about what you would expect from an upscale kitchen located on a train. It would have been nice to have known about the lounge cars and the open air window car prior to arriving back into Napa - we would have liked to have had the opportunity to get a picture while the train was running past the beautiful estates outside of town. A quick FYI, although I did not expect a completely smooth ride because of the age of the cars, the swaying can be moderate to significant in a few locations. I highly recommend them for the Legacy Experience. And, it was everything I dreamed it would be! The food, the wine, the landscape, the people. It’s definitely a splurge, but if you’re looking for a once-in-a-lifetime experience, it’s hard to beat.”

Jamie Coggins, a wine expert and tour guide who leads groups through the valley, agrees that the train offers a unique experience for visitors.

“The train is a great way to see a lot of different parts of the valley in one trip,” Coggins says. “And the food and wine are outstanding. If you’re in the area and you’re looking for something special to do, I would definitely recommend it.”
