We booked the hide a half year in advance. Seeing a bear would be the highlight of our holiday since we are both animal lovers. Peep was really helpful during the arrangements! On the night itself we didn’t see bears which was really disappointing. Maybe the rain had something to do with it. We arranged a second night and boy were we glad we did. We saw a bear coming walking out of the woods a couple of times. An amazing sight! Definitely worth it. The first night we shared the cabin with two other people but we still had our own (private) part of the cabin. The second night we had the whole cabin for just the two of us. This experience was great, I recommend it!
I was thrilled to discover Natourest’s overnight stay in a bear hide! The staff at Natourest were hugely helpful and helped me to find the best opportunity and travel options. The hides are comfortable, completely bug free, and are split into two to allow for some privacy. As a woman travelling on my own I had no concerns at all about overnighting in the wilderness! I was SUPER lucky and we had multiple bear sightings, as well as raccoon dogs and a wide variety of birds. I highly recommend this experience!
Firstly, let me just say the older reviews referring to bugs in the huts and noisy at night, etc. are for the old hides, they’ve now got newly built upgraded hides that are clean, comfortable, warm, completely bug-free, quiet and all around fantastic for sleeping and nature watching. We saw 2 brown bears and it was an absolutely amazing experience that I would recommend to anyone and everyone who is remotely interested in animals/nature. Fantastic communication, customer service and friendliness from the company that helped organised it. Can’t recommend this enough!

Elk (or Moose, as Americans say) is a common animal in Estonia. With the population of more than 12 000 animals, Elks can be seen all over Estonia, but it is naturally more common in the big wilderness areas.

Wildlife Holidays in Estonia
Tell me about Estonia …
Estonia is the smallest and least populous of the three Baltic States which achieved independence from the former Soviet Union in 1991.
A magnificent indented coastline, studded with small islands, borders the Baltic Sea and Gulf of Finland to the west and north, while Latvia and the Russian Federation comprise Estonia’s neighbours to the south and east respectively.
It is a land of great natural beauty, with a varied landscape which includes over 7,000 rivers, 1,500 lakes and substantial areas of forest and marsh. An admirable 10% of the country is afforded protection within nature reserves that vary in size from the large national parks to the smaller, locally protected, reserves.

"I would recommend our ‘ Estonia in Early Spring ’ tour exploring the pristine forest and coastal habitats in search of owls, woodpeckers, grouse and large gatherings of Steller’s Eider ducks."
Naturetrek Tours to Estonia
Naturetrek’s tours to Estonia focus primarily on the country’s migratory and breeding birds however, this small state is also rich with wildflowers, particularly orchids, and butterflies.
Whats special about the wildlife?
Estonia is still comparatively little known as a wildlife destination. However, it has a very impressive avifauna which matches that of any country in northern Europe.
With over 200 regular breeding bird species, and a huge volume of Arctic-bound migrant birds passing through the country, it is sure to occupy a higher profile in future years.
Its flora is among the most spectacular in northern Europe. In particular, strong influences in the countrys floral make-up come from both Siberia and also the warmer regions of southern Europe, with many plant species reaching their respective western or northern extremities of range within Estonia.

Estonian Nature and National Parks
Vihasoo, 74703 harju maakond.
Estonia… what a perfect place for nature lovers. More than 18% of the country’s land and 30% of the sea territory is made up of protected areas, which include five national parks, nature reserves, landscape reserves, and other smaller areas. Bogs, meadows, forests, and little lakes give you a great opportunity to enjoy the silence and peaceful nature. Here you may also find more than 1,500 charming islands with the largest of them being Saaremaa, Hiiumaa and Muhu.
The climate in Estonia can be called temperate and mild. The weather is often breezy and humid since the Baltic Sea is near. Seasons are always different but the most common and regular ones are warm summers and fairly cold winters. Estonian nature is picturesque and vibrant. If you decide to spend some time outside it will be a pleasure for you since the country is perfect not only for hiking and camping but also for skiing and for other winter sports.
Some people joke and call Estonia the kingdom of bogs because approximately one quarter of the country is covered in marshes. It does not depend in which part of Estonia are you, the nearest marsh is always less than 10 km away. Most of the bogs are located in the central and eastern parts of the country.
Estonia has 5 national parks:
- Karula National Park is located in southern Estonia. It is one of the smallest national parks in the country and was formed thousands of years ago by continental glacial activity. The park is popular for its forests, fields, and meadows. It houses around 40 lakes.
- Lahemaa National Park is located on the north coast of Estonia. It is the oldest one in the country. Here you can find stony and sandy beaches, picturesque bogs, special plant communities, rapid rivers, and some monuments. This national park is one of the most important protected forest areas in Europe.
- Matsalu National Park is located in western Estonia and is one of the most famous bird sites in Europe. The park can be even called a true ‘birdwatchers’ paradise since an exceptionally large variety of bird species stops and nests here. Here you can see flooded meadows, coastal meadows, reed beds, and forests.
- Soomaa National Park is situated in central Estonia. It is rich in bogs and mires. It is a perfect place for activities such as bog hikes and canoe trips. The best time of the year in Soomaa is the flood period or the fifth season.
- Vilsandi National Park is located on the west coast of Saaremaa Island. A great place for those who love the sea, seals, shifting sands, birds and orchids. One third of all protected plant species in Estonia can be found in this national park. In summer, hikes are organized there every day.
If you consider yourself a nature lover, then you should definitely stop by one of these amazing national parks. Estonia’s human population is low, so there are a lot of empty roads and good infrastructure. The low population also gives you some advantage: it gives the adventurers plenty of space to themselves, allows them to make telephone calls, and access the internet any time they want since Internet reception is found all over the country, even on isolated beaches or deep in the forest.

Touristic nature tour on the official trail sounds too mainstream? If you’re interested in a customized tour just for yourself or for your group, you´ve come to the right place!
My name is Romet and as a tour guide, I am willing to take foreigners closer to Estonian nature and offer them opportunities to expand their nature experience. This could mean hiking with snowshoes/bogshoes off the beaten track near Tallinn, swimming in bog lakes, cooking on a fire in the middle of nowhere, staying overnight and sleeping in hammocks in bogs of Central Estonia, organizing a two-day canoe trip in Soomaa or Matsalu National park together with traditional sauna, challenging yourself with an overnight trip in the winter and hiking over the frozen bog or going on a landscape photography tour. Or skating on the frozen lakes…
I see myself as a flexible tour guide who can customize your experience based on your interest, physical capabilities, budget, available time and seasonal circumstances. I most familiar with bogs of Central and Northern Estonia, coastal areas of Northern Estonia (Lahemaa National Park and Pakri peninsula), Soomaa National Park and Matsalu National Park. In 2020 Im doing my best to write about all the great things the Estonian nature can offer in my blog .
Before planning your trip to Estonia I suggest you read my Complete guide of visiting Estonian bogs get inspired by Thrillist’s article about 3-day vacation in Tallinn , including my bog tours. 🙂
