Cool Cruiser

NOTE : I will post the Dailies I have in this stream tomorrow.  Also, please forgive my spelling and grammar.

Some contexts of our cruising experiences in the past.   My wife and I have gone on 25 + cruises over 43 years.   Our first five and last five on NCL.   As time has gone on, we have wanted more of our Cruising Experience.   We started with the most inexpensive inside cabin during our honeymoon 43 years ago.   Five years ago, we found the NCL Haven and loved it.   The Haven Premium was a bit to much for us on this cruise so we did a Club Balcony Suite on this cruise. Two cruises ago, November 2021, we did the nicest Haven Cabin (The H2 Haven Deluxe Owners Suite) with our two (2) adult children.   That was our 43 rd wedding anniversary.   It was also wonderful to have our kids joining us. The older we get, the better we enjoy family and friends joining us when we cruise. On to the NCL Breakaway review.

Our choice of the NCL Breakaway out of New Orleans on December 4, 2022, was pre-determined.   Last year on the NCL Joy for our family vacation, my wife won the Slot tournament which gave her an entry into the “ Casino’s at Sea ” Slot Tournament finals for “ Winner takes all $100,000.00 ”.   We have gone on this itinerary (Ports) three other times so the ports were a non-issue to us.   Another positive thing was we could drive to the Port of New Orleans in just under 6 hours which was a GREAT benefit, especially on our drive home.   Also, for whatever reason knowing I was driving allowed me to sleep the last night with far less stress.   Airports give me stress because I almost lived in them in my career.   I will overview this cruise review into parts.   I hope you like it and it helps you.

Pre-Cruise Hotel:   I know this is a NCL Cruise Ship review, however our experience over the decades has to do with our extensive planning to make the trip the best it can be.   We ALWAYS get to the port city the day before because we almost missed the ship “ ONLY ONCE ”.   We stayed in the French Quarter Marriott Renaissance.   It was OK, but that is my feeling about most New Orleans Hotels.   It is about the city not the Hotel.   By doing a “ Pre-Cruise ” hotel, it allows you to get to the Port early which for us is a must especially at the Port of New Orleans.

Parking at the Port:   I dropped my wife off at the Hotel, then drove the car to the “ Park Place Parking ”.   I pre-paid for the parking online so it was kind of easy.   I highly recommend this parking because when you come out of the ship, the “ White Parking Buses ” are waiting for you.   Less than a 5-minute drive.   When coming from your hotel to the port, your Uber driver will know the short cut to miss the crazy traffic around the port of New Orleans.

Embarkment Day: I did my online check-in at midnight 21 days prior to the cruise.   I did this to get to the earliest check-in time because that gets us in and seated quickly.   My check in time was 09:30 AM.   We were NOT in the Haven VIP area this time, so this was even more important.   In the NCL Haven, when you are past security, it you get priority embarkment day check-in.   We were in a Club Balcony Suite (MA) this cruise. We got to the port at 09:00 AM and had to wait for the security to open at 09:30 AM.   We were second in line through security.   The check-in process was about 5-minutes.   It was a bit longer because we had Pre-Purchased a week Vibe Beach Club Pass with Cabana and they had to give us our wrist bands.   More on the Vibe Beach Club later.   As is my habit, we sat right outside the entry door which gave us quick access to boarding when it opened.   That was about 11:00 AM for those interested.   Because we got to the port early, our boarding group was #1. This is way we had this strategy.   Works every time.

Once On Board:   I got my wife a table at O’Sheehans for lunch and I went to change a Specialty Restaurant Reservation as quickly as I could.   The strategy is for Haven Guest, you can book specialty restaurants 130 days in advance; Suites/Club Suites is 125 days and all other is 120 days.   One of my reservations had to change because of a conflict with the slot tournament finals.   Take note, most reservations are not available at this late time when it is close to the cruise sailing date.   I was lucky.   You got to the “ Headliner ” room to make the changes for most everything as a hint to everyone cruising on the NCL Breakaway in the future.   I want this review to be as strategic an approach as what happened during our cruise.

Vibe Beach Club:   After lunch, we immediately went to the Vibe Beach Club.   I do all the planning on our vacations, so my wife simply depends on me for where to go and what to do until she gets her sea legs.   She had never been to the Vibe Beach Club before because we were always in the Haven Area which has their own “ Adults Only ” sundeck.   We also paid a little bit more for a Vibe Cabana which by the way comes with two; week long Vibe Beach Club passes.   This decision was one of the best choices I made for the week.   The Vibe has a bar feet from the cushioned lounge chairs which is a plus and better than the Haven sundeck which has no bar.   The Cabana comes with two bottles of water per day, which is nice.   The Vibe crew were incredibly awesome.   When you get there, they ask if you want an umbrella; they bring frozen fruit spears; and ice water.   Every few minutes they ask if you want a drink from the bar.   There are two oversized hot tubs with sunshades over them, so it is like having an umbrella.   This area is for adults only, so it is also very quiet, which at our age is a plus.   The Vibe is a Non-smoking area.   The main pool on the pool deck was always packed as normal but the Vibe was never crowded.   My wife’s comment was, “ Money well spent!! ” We stayed in the Vibe until 02:00 PM when they said our Club Balcony Suite was ready.   It is important you carry-on luggage has bathing suits and sunscreen if you choose to do this approach as we did. There is a bathroom and shower for your changing needs. Just think it through so you can relax quickly.

Our Club Balcony Suite (MA):   Cabin #13232 which was dead center of the ship. More on this below but I wanted to keep it in sequence for those reading this review.   This was my second time in a Club Balcony Suite.   My first time was on the NCL Joy, as a solo cruiser, in March 2022.   The beds can be separated with the nightstand in the middle of the two beds.   Or they can be together for a king bed. The bathroom had a large sink with two faucets, a walk-in shower, and a little storage under the sink.   The shower needed some work, but it was acceptable.   The water pressure and hot water was great.   Better than at my home.   You get two bath towels but can ask for more.   The soaps are in dispensers, which is common. The suite storage was acceptable for two (2) people but might have been tight if we had a third.   On that note, a third in this cabin would be very tight but doable.   The bed was very comfortable. The LCD TV with digital information was easy but please remember the movies have a cost.   The closet has a small safe but not big enough for a laptop.   I always have all the “ For Sale Items ” taken out of my suite on day one so the mini-Refrigerator can be used for other items as needed. The small couch was comfortable, but we rarely used it.   The Balcony was small with two chairs and a small table enough for two.   This Club Balcony Suite comes with a complimentary bag of laundry.   Give your room steward the laundry at least two days before you leave. Some down sides were not enough outlets and none by the bed which was a negative.   Also, the outlet by the desk would go off needing maintenance when my wife used her personal dryer.   The phone system was rarely used but don’t expect to get to guest services on it.   You will wait forever.   I give this Club Balcony Suite (MA) a 3 out of 5 stars.

Dining and Food: We did the “ Free at Sea PLUS ” package so we had four (4) Specialty Restaurant Meals.   I will discuss each separately because it has been an area most folks want to hear about.   Remember food is personal and not every feel the same way about dining.

Complementary Dining:

1.       Main Dining Room: Great hot breakfasts with very good coffee.   Service was wonderful.   Dinner was OK and enjoyable, the service was great, but the quality was average at best.   About what you would expect.   That said, it is a great place for Breakfast but look at the times so you don’t miss the dining window.   The time changes every day.    I am an “ egg to order ” guy and they were always perfect.   My wife is a pancake or French Toast lady, and she said it was just OK.   Her grits and the Hash Browns special was her favorite. I rate this 3.5 out of 5.

2.       Buffet :   As with any buffet, you must pick and choose what suits you.   We used the Buffet for breakfast one day.   The eggs to order at the egg station were great.   I love certain dry cereals, so I was happy.   My wife could make her grit just the way she liked it.   Surprisingly the small waffles were better here than the larger ones in the main dining room.   We had several lunches at the Buffet.   My wife who is picky loved the pizza.   Who would have thought that?   I love the carving station with the mashed potato’s expect the day they had Pork Roast which was dry.   All and all good food and better than I have remembered it in the past.   My wife’s favorite thing was the soft served ice cream.   Everyone washed their hands.   Kids nor adults touched any of the food that I could see.   So that is a positive from the shutdown.   Quick, easy, and plentiful.   I rate this 4 out of 5.

3.       O ’Sheehan’s:   A fan favorite.   The fish & chips, hamburgers and chicken wings were great.   FYI, you can order Ice Cream Shakes for $4.00 if you want.      The wine selection is awful however I did not expect anything different.   This place gets crowded at mealtimes especially when you’re initially board.   It is also open 24/7.   We had many lunches while playing gin when it was not busy.   I rate this 4 out of 5.

4.       The Noodle Bar:   We had dinner here on two (2) of the three available nights that we did not have Specialty Restaurants.   We loved it and could not wait to get back.   They always have a wait because it is complementary.   Get a seat at the cooking bar for Dinner and a Show.   Very interesting.   Food is relative but we love everything.   You must know, my wife loves this kind of food and so do I.   I highly recommend it but be there 30 minutes before they open.   They serve in shifts. I rate this 5 out of 5.

Specialty Dining Restaurants:

1.       Cagney’s Steakhouse:   I have had mixed results from Cagney’s depending on the ship.   The NCL Joy, it was outstanding.   This ship, the NCL Breakaway is was average at best.   The service was outstanding as always.   The portion sizes are huge.   The restaurant itself is lovely.   The food was way over cooked.   This was not just my opinion it was others who ate there as well.   The bread was average as well, yet the butter was outstanding. My recommendation is ordering the meat temperature under what you want.   If you want Med Rare, order Rare.     I had the Prime Rib, and my wife has the ribeye.   Good not great and again over cooked.   The sides are all good and so are the salads.   The dessert my wife loves was Crème Brulé, and it was not good at all.   However, the Chocolate 7-Layer Cake was over the top GREAT. I attempted to purchase a Chocolate cake slice last night and was turned down.   I rate this 3 out of 5.

2.       Ocean Blue:   This was the highlight meal of this entire cruise.   That is funny because in November 2021 on the NCL Joy, we did not like it.   This trip everything from the bread to the fish was excellent.   Everything was cooked perfectly.   I had scallops for an appetizer, salmon for my main.   My wife had the Linguini and loved it.   To say we both were surprised would be an understatement. Even the desserts were very good.   I rate this 5 out of 5.

3.       Le Bistro: This restaurant is also a hit or miss.   Before covid it was my favorite.   Now it is good.   I got the scallops, and my wife got the escargot appetizer, both were very nice.   My wife got the sole and I got the Lamb Chop/Shank which I always love.   My wife said the sole was good, but the sauce needed something.   The bread here was great. The service and dining experience was great.   I drink my weight in Champagne in this place with the Premium Plus Beverage Package.   We skipped dessert and got soft served at the buffet later that evening. We usually eat here because it is a perk from American Express Platinum Card members.   This time it was because of the “ Free at Sea PLUS ” program.   I rate this 4 out of 5.

4.       Teppanyaki: We always save Teppanyaki for the last night dinner.   It is a dinner and show. Usually, the food is good and tasty.   This time it was not good from start to finish.   The fried rice was tasteless, the steak had an off flavor, the chicken was just chicken nothing special, the salad was just Cole slaw.   Again, we loved this place on the NCL Joy.   The inconsistencies are surprising.   I rate this 2 out of 5.

The Premium Plus Beverage Package: I have written op-eds on cruisecritic.com for this subject as I have also done with the NCL Haven VIP Luxury Experience.   Before I begin let me say, I would still do this upgrade.   Especially since it is now part of the Free at Sea PLUS package.   My wife drinks wine exclusively.   She likes nice wine but not necessarily expensive stuff.   Her favorite at home is Josh Chardonnay which is buttery. The better Chardonnay was very hard to find and with two days left, no more was left.   Every time we would hear the excuse it was a supply chain issues.   They had no Crown Royal halfway through the cruise.   I like Tequila 1942 which I have had no issue getting on my last few NCL cruises.   Not a bottle onboard. If you are REALLY PICKY, skip this package for now.   Wait for things to clean up from a supply chain standpoint.   Yet, every single day we did several Starbucks, bottled imported water, I did high end spirits.   It seems that NCL has stopped doing Shooter drinks fleet wide due to how long I take to make them on a filled ship.   Baily’s is now $16.00 so you have a small extra charge with the regular beverage package. Please understand, we had as many alcoholic drinks as possible that we wanted. Look up the article I wrote on how to approach this package during normal times. Where in the past I would give this package a 5 out of 5.   This time it was 3 out of 5.

Entertainment:

1.       Six: One of the best Broadway shows I have ever seen on a cruise ship.   Happens night two and three.   Four shows that are at 07:30 PM and 10:00 PM. I rate this as 5 out of 5.

2.       Burn the Floor: This is another GREAT show that is also amazing.   It happens on the last two nights of the cruise at 07:30 PM and 10:00 PM.   Get your reservations for both Six and Burn the Floor the moment you get on board. You can reserve them on your cabin TV screen.   I rate this 5 out of 5.

3.       Dueling Piano’s at Headliners: This show is a complete bust.   We left after just a few songs.   Not only were they below average musicians, but they contently were also asking for tips by referring to their tip jars.   I rate this as 1 out of 5.

4.       Martini Bar Entertainer: This gentleman was great, and I highly recommend having a martini with him.   The Martini bar is always crowded to get there and get a seat.   He looks like just an average guy then he begins playing and his true talent comes out.   I rate this 4 out of 5.

5.       The Beer Pub: This place is hoping all the time.   You must stand online to get in like the Cavern Club on other NCL ships.   Worth the wait so plan a night there. I rate this 5 out of 5.

6.       Internet : I had Unlimited Streaming which was an upgrade to the “ Free at Sea PLUS ” program which just comes with Unlimited not streaming.   It is a cruise ship so the internet even at its best is average. The hardest part is when you only have one internet program and two folks in the cabin that want to use it.   You must figure out how to put it on your device.   Apple Phones you got to the NCL App and your account then internet.   On your Microsoft computer you go to Chrome for some reason and put it in a website.   Apple computers just go on and go to any website.   It takes a couple of times to get used to it.   I rate this as a 3.5 out of 5.

Ports:   I have been to all these ports many times in the past.   This time we only got off the ship at the private island and Roatan.   We spent most of our time on the Vibe with the view of the island.   Please understand that we used to live at the beach, so sand is familiar to us.

1.       Private Island:   Easy walk, no issue getting a lounge chair by the pool with an umbrella.   Service for drinks was very easy.   The pool was kind of cold but once you got in, you were fine.   I love this pool has a bar in it.   Like we need more drinks, LOL.   I love this island.   It is well organized, in great shape and clean.   My favorite thing to do on this island is Zip Lines and the very expensive Beach Villa which was sold out early.   The Pool cabanas are not worth the money in my opinion.   Our strategy is to get some sun, take a dip in the pool and go back to the ship for a late lunch.   If the drink package worked on the island, I would rate it higher.   I rate this as a 4 out of 5.

2.       Roatan:   Not my favorite place from experience so unless you are on an excursion, be careful.   We just got off the ship to take a walk in the protected area.   It started to rain so we found shelter at a small bar to have a beer.   My wife looked next door and grabbed me.   There was the place she wanted me to go.   You take your beer, sit on a bench, and put your feet in water where little fish eat your dead skin off your feet.   With my feed, they were completely full I assure you.   We really enjoyed the walk and the experience.   In the past we did the Jolly Rodger Snorkeling and the All Inclusive Over the Water Bungalow. Referring to the Bungalow, the bus ride there is horrible, then you do some shots, have lunch, do some more shots. The ride back is GREAT.   I rate this as a 3 out of 5.

Dis-Embark:   I was expecting a nightmare because my history tells me what was going to happen.   I was very pleasantly surprised.   The key is to get your luggage tags from Guest Services on the morning of the last full day.   Read the sign and remember your color.   Self-explanatory.   Listen for your color to be called.   Follow the instructions.   From the time our color was called, it only took 10 minutes.   Everyone on this filled ship was kind, patient and nice to each other.   Once we got our luggage, the white bus for our parking lot was just out the door. Now if you are in the Haven, it is even easier because the take you down the service elevator and escort you out.     I am rating this as a 5 out of 5.

Conclusion:   We had a great time and relaxed.   Everyone must remember no cruise is perfect.   When things go wrong or are not to your liking, just be flexible.   I see way too many folks upset at the smallest things making the rest of their week go purely.   We are done with this Itinerary and next year we will go for 10 days to the Mediterranean on NCL’s sister brand Oceania.   If I do NCL again which I am sure I will, I will only go on the Encore, Bliss, or Joy.   I like the layout better than the Getaway or the Breakaway.   I rate the entire cruise experience as a 4 out of 5.

Cruise well and enjoy every single moment.

I've only cruised out of New Orleans one time, and it was during the restart when the Breakaway was only at 30% capacity. So the port was basically empty without a single line or wait to board. Is the New Orleans port usually a crowded mess? More so than the Florida ports?

Yes, it is usually a crowded mess.  But it was good this time because I got there early on purpose.

Cruise well and enjoy every moment.

Quick question on the internet.  Without the upgrade to Unlimited Steaming, just the "Free at Sea Plus", are you saying that only one person can use the internet at a time? I was under the impression that since both had to pay for the FAS Plus that both would get it.

Thanks in advance, and I love reading your stuff.

In my case it was only one device.  Do me a favor and check that fact.  I thought it was two also but it did not work out that way.  Please post back here when you know.  Sorry about any confusion.

We won't be sailing until March, but I will definitely post back here what happens.  Thanks again.

So the port was basically empty without a single line or wait to board. Is the New Orleans port usually a crowded mess? More so than the Florida ports?

I'll jump in with me experience.  We were in Haven last March. Arrived at the port about fifteen minutes before our assigned check-in time of 1000.  The security line was at least two blocks long.  We were in the security line until after 1100.  I don't think they were processing people through the security until boarding started because there was no place to go.  Since we were in Haven, things went well after we cleared security.

Either get there very early as Gary recommends or don't get there until 1130 or maybe 1200.  Either way, you're going to wait until after 1100 to board.

@RocketMan275  Exactly.  Everything is changing because of FULL cruise ships.  I hate long lines regardless of the cabin category I am in. Add in the congestion at the Port of New Orleans vs. lets say, Miami.

If folks have a better idea, I am all ears.  Anything that makes boarding or getting off easier.  On that we all agree.

Thank you for this review!  We will be on the Breakaway in a couple of weeks and are looking really forward to it.  We love O’Sheehan wings, and thanks for the advice on booking the shows once you get on board.

Regarding embarkation day. I wanted to ask you if you remember what time the ship departed New Orleans and if you observed any late arriving passengers (past the 2 pm cutoff time).  Reason I am asking is that we are arriving on embarkation day and curious about the last onboard time and departure.  Thank you!

Nice review. Thank you.

In regards to  Cagneys,  next time try the filet.  We also have had some so so experiences  with Cagneys in the past.  Was disappointed as well with both the prime rib and the ribeye.  On our cruise last month wife and I both decided to order the filet.  Our filets were wonderful.  Perfectly cooked.  Best meal we have ever had at Cagneys.

Glad you had a good experience sailing out of NOLA.  We have sailed from NOLA three times and have found it for the most part a disorganized mess.  Good to hear they got it right on your cruise.

In regards to entertainment on the Breakaway,  we agree with you on the beer house.  We thought the best entertainment on the ship was at Syd Norman's.   The band that was playing there when we sailed a year ago was fantastic.  We went there almost every night.  The Fleetwood Mac Rumours set they did one night was superb.

ETA:  Do you have pictures or pricing info on the Vibe cabana?

@psmoove  Your question is a common question because everyone arrive the day of the cruise is nervous they will miss the cruise.  I have also felt the same fear but I almost missed a cruise years and years ago.  I believe they left slightly after 5 PM if I am not mistaken.  I think they say 02:00 PM to scare folks.  I was not looking over the ship to see who came on last.  What I can say is they let folks on until the pull the lines.  I know that is not helpful but it is all I know.

Cruise well and enjoy every moment.

@seemoreroyals  I was on the NCL Joy in November 2021 and March 2022.  In March I ate at Cagney's four times on that trip and each meal was fantastic.  That really is my point.  Inconsistant.  Kind of hit or miss at Cagney's.  Except for the Cake.

I cruises on the NCL Getaway in November 2019.  It was a complete mess.  This time, I approach it differently.  I got there early and got on the security as soon as it opened.  Problem solved.  I also got the earliest exit time bag tag and the same thing happened.  No one was more surprised than I was.

It should be on you online reservation off of the NCL App.  I think is was like $550.00 for the two of us with the cabana.  Worth every penny.  I also tip them day one and day six.  I felt like a rock star, LOL.

Excellent review!  Appreciate all the details. We have sailed out of NOLA on Breakaway and it ranks up there as one of my all time favorites. Sitting on the balcony as we made our way down the Mississippi was really cool. “Six” was not a show on our sailing (2018). Is this show a musical with a storyline or something else?

Hey Gary, thanks for the info. Glad to hear you had a better experience at Ocean Blue, we ate there on the Bliss and it was the best meal we’ve had at sea. I can’t wait to try it on the Breakaway in March!

I'm curious about what you referred to as the “beer pub”.  I know there isn’t a District Brew House like on the Bliss but now you’ve got me excited that there might at least be something similar.

Hi Gary, thanks for review.  Very helpful.

would you say you need to board early to get reservations for the shows at the 7:00 times.   I would prefer not to rush to board, but am worried about getting the show reservations for time and day I want.

@kohanfam  You should be fine just make your show reservations on your cabin TV when you get in your stateroom.  The hardest reservations are the specialty Restaurants which is why I did that first.

@LincolnLog  The venue is called Syd Norman's Pour House.  Very Similar to the District Brew House.

Great Review

thank you for this review! Were any of the ports tender? We are on this same cruise in April- and two were initially listed that way, but our booking confirmation states "docked"- just curious what you did.

Niffernay

Great review as always @Sthrngary . Thanks!!  We cruise in January on the Encore and I'll be hunting down the 1942. I'm also curious about the upgraded internet with the Plus package. The description certainly makes it seem like it's two separate internet connections for the cabin, but I guess we'll find out.  Take care! Jen

@rjm11  I was on the cruise and someone not on the cruise, on CruiseCritic.com said the ship was going to tender at two ports.  I was not happy because tendering is so uncomfortable.  The fact was, the ship docked at every port and the person who said that was incorrect.

What I find is the only really good source is someone on the ship.  It does not mean that your ship won't tender.  What is means is that my did not.  NCL if any thing is very inconsistant at time.

@Sthrngary and @LincolnLog Syd Norman's is almost identical to the Cavern Club.  District Brewhouse  is  a distinct bar type.  We just got off the Bliss and they had both a Cavern Club and a District Brewhouse.  All three have live entertainment but more limited piano player / vocalist type entertainment at the District Brewhouse on cruises I have been on.

@graphicguy   I attempted to post this review on the actual review area.  I tried about five times and go an error message each time to come back later.  I sent CruiseCritic.com Reviews a message.  I hope to post it on reviews soon.

BTW….my favorite show on the ship (they were all very good) was the band in Syd Norman’s.  And yes, you have to get there early (like an hour early) to get a seat.

The 6 best cruise ship waterslides and watery fun zones

MSN has partnered with The Points Guy for our coverage of credit card products. MSN and The Points Guy may receive a commission from card issuers.

Call it the Battle of the Waterslides.

In the last few years, the big boys of the cruise industry — Royal Caribbean , MSC Cruises , Norwegian Cruise Line and Carnival Cruise Line — have been locked in a game of one-upmanship when it comes to waterslides and watery fun zones on vessels.

In addition to such over-the-top, new attractions as go-kart tracks and roller coasters , the brands behind the biggest megaresorts at sea have been packing the top decks of their vessels with even more over-the-top watery allures.

For more cruise guides, news and reviews, sign up for TPG’s cruise newsletter .

Royal Caribbean, for instance, added an 800-foot-long “water coaster” to the back of its 3,386-passenger Navigator of the Seas just a few years ago. It’s one of more than two dozen giant waterslides the line has added to more than half a dozen ships in the last seven years.

Royal Caribbean also plans a record six waterslides on its next new ship, Icon of the Seas, which is scheduled to debut in January 2024.

But as recently as early 2016, Royal Caribbean didn’t have a single waterslide on any of its vessels.

MSC Cruises also has gone big with giant water parks in the past seven years, with as many as four waterslides on more than half a dozen of its newest vessels. Norwegian has loaded up its most recent ships with giant water parks, too — some have as many as five waterslides!

Not to be outdone, Carnival, an early adopter of waterslides on ships, has added sprawling water park areas with multiple waterslides to almost every vessel in its fleet.

A brief history of water attractions at sea

In the beginning, there was the pool. As watery cruise ship attractions go, it has long been the staple — something found on nearly every cruise vessel going back to the 1970s.

But as early as 1978, at least one line was spicing up its Lido decks with a little waterslide fun — little being the operative word. That’s the year Carnival added a single slide into the pool on its 728-passenger Festivale — a slide so small it’s now hilarious to think it was touted as an attraction.

Often cited as the first waterslide ever on a cruise vessel, the Festivale slide was of a sort that was found at backyard pools at the time. The cruise industry was still in its infancy, of course, and ships were orders of magnitude smaller than they are today. Festivale measured just 32,697 tons, about one-seventh the size of today’s biggest cruise vessels.

Carnival, the so-called Fun Ship line, would go on to become the early leader in waterslides at sea. The 2,056-passenger Carnival Fantasy, which debuted in 1990, was the first cruise ship with a significant waterslide. It measured 115 feet in length.

Related: A beginner’s guide to picking a cruise line

Just six years later, in 1996, Carnival would make news with the unveiling of a 214-foot-long corkscrew waterslide on what then was called Destiny. (The ship currently sails as the Carnival Sunshine after being rebuilt in 2013.) At the time, Destiny was the biggest cruise ship in the world.

In more recent years, Carnival has gone into waterslide-building overdrive. The line has added full-blown water park areas with waterslides, watery play zones and other features to all but four of its 25 ships. All but one of Carnival’s ships (Carnival Luminosa) now have at least one waterslide.

One of the Carnival water parks, on the line’s 5-year-old Carnival Horizon, even has Disney-style theming revolving around Dr. Seuss characters.

Norwegian, MSC Cruises and Royal Caribbean only began going big with waterslides on ships in the past decade or so. Many of the newest vessels from the brands have massive water park areas. Some of the brands are retrofitting big waterslides onto older ships, too.

Additionally, family-focused Disney Cruise Line now has major water attractions on all its vessels.

Where you’ll find the biggest waterslides at sea

If your idea of the perfect cruise ship is one loaded to the gills with waterslides and watery fun zones (plus all sorts of other over-the-top attractions), you’ll want to stick to the biggest floating megaresorts operated by Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, MSC Cruises and Carnival.

At Royal Caribbean, that means the giant Oasis-class vessels , which include Wonder of the Seas — the world’s largest cruise ship. At Norwegian, you’ll find the biggest waterslides and water parks on the line’s relatively recently built Breakaway Plus-, Breakaway- and Epic-class ships. At MSC Cruises, the new Seaside-, Meraviglia-, Meraviglia Plus- and World-class vessels have the line’s big water parks.

Big lines that have steered clear of the water-park-at-sea trend include Princess Cruises, Holland America and Celebrity Cruises. Geared more toward couples than families and typically drawing an older demographic, all three of these lines have stuck to a more subdued feel for the outdoor areas of their ships. The top decks of vessels operated by Princess, Holland America and Celebrity still mostly revolve around traditional swimming areas with pools, hot tubs and lounge chairs.

Ready for a splashy, top-deck thrill? These are the most spectacular watery attractions at sea.

The Perfect Storm

Where you’ll find it: Royal Caribbean’s Wonder of the Seas, Symphony of the Seas, Harmony of the Seas, Oasis of the Seas, Liberty of the Seas and Voyager of the Seas.

This isn’t just one giant waterslide; it’s a whole complex of waterslides, each one among the most exciting you’ll find anywhere on the world’s oceans.

The Perfect Storm is found on four of Royal Caribbean’s massive Oasis-class vessels — Wonder of the Seas, Symphony of the Seas, Harmony of the Seas and Oasis of the Seas — as well as the smaller Liberty of the Seas and Voyager of the Seas. The complex includes two four-deck-high racer slides called Cyclone and Typhoon, where you can do side-by-side speed tests with your travel partner.

On the four Oasis-class ships, there’s also a third, Champagne bowl-style slide called Supercell. It’ll swirl you around a big basin before plummeting you “down the drain” into a plunge pool. On Liberty of the Seas, a third slide called The Tidal Wave sends you screaming down a steep hill on an inner tube to a nearly vertical incline. Zooming upward, topping out and dropping back, you’ll get a blissful moment of complete weightlessness.

Note that Royal Caribbean’s Navigator of the Seas also has a waterslide area called Perfect Storm — but it’s completely different. More on that in a moment.

The Blaster

Where you’ll find it: Royal Caribbean’s Navigator of the Seas.

The Blaster is the Big Daddy of waterslides at sea. At 800 feet, it’s the longest ever built on a cruise ship. Added to Royal Caribbean’s Navigator of the Seas in 2019, it’s a seemingly endless stretch of yellow and orange tubing that winds around the back deck of the vessel like a snake.

A true sight to behold, The Blaster is so long because it’s what’s known as a water coaster. It features water jets that propel you up, down and forward — extending the ride — as you careen around the ship’s basketball court and surfing simulator in an inner tube. At times, you go flying over the side of the ship, over open water (not that you have much time to take in the view).

Royal Caribbean has named the area on Navigator of the Seas where The Blaster is located the Perfect Storm — the same name used for waterslide areas on six other ships — but the area is completely different than what you’ll find on the other vessels. In addition to The Blaster, the Perfect Storm area on Navigator of the Seas includes a headfirst mat racer slide called Riptide — the first of its kind at sea.

Where you’ll find it: Disney Fantasy and Disney Dream.

Leave it to family-focused Disney Cruise Line to come up with the coolest watery family attraction at sea. AquaDuck is a water coaster, like The Blaster on Royal Caribbean’s Navigator of the Seas, and is found on Disney’s two Dream-class ships. But don’t expect anything too white-knuckle. The ride is relatively gentle by water park standards, mainly because it’s designed for kids of all ages (and their parents, who can ride along on inner tubes for two).

While AquaDuck is slightly shorter than The Blaster at 765 feet in length, it has a bigger presence, thanks to its prime location encircling the main pool area. If you’re lounging up top, it’s hard to miss the massive, clear acrylic tubing of the ride, which is held up by 46 giant white stilts.

In addition to AquaDuck, the two Disney ships with the attraction (Disney Fantasy and Disney Dream ) have a relatively small, kid-friendly waterslide next to the centrally located Mickey’s Pool. Dubbed Mickey’s Slide, it’s held up by a giant Mickey hand, which is delightful. Both ships also have a watery play zone for toddlers called Nemo’s Reef. Plus, Disney Fantasy has a watery fun zone with water jets, geysers and bubblers called AquaLab.

Note that Disney’s newest ship — Disney Wish — has a water coaster attraction similar to the AquaDuck called the AquaMouse. The big difference: Riders will see animated shorts while riding up the ramp at the start of the ride.

Carnival WaterWorks

Where you’ll find it: Nearly all Carnival ships.

When it comes to waterslides on ships, cruise giant Carnival is still the undisputed king. The Fun Ship line began adding them to vessels way back in 1978, and there’s now at least one waterslide on every ship in the Carnival fleet — something no other line can say.

Indeed, on all Carnival ships, there’s now not just a single waterslide but a whole water park area. Called WaterWorks, these areas vary in size and features from vessel to vessel, but they typically have one or two big waterslides, a watery play zone with interactive water features and a large continuously filling dump bucket that periodically soaks everybody within range.

You’ll typically find the biggest Carnival water park complexes on the newest Carnival ships, such as Mardi Gras , Celebration and Carnival Venezia . All three have three waterslides — one more than most Carnival ships.

Aqua Park (Norwegian Cruise Line)

Where you’ll find it: Norwegian Epic, Norwegian Breakaway, Norwegian Getaway, Norwegian Escape, Norwegian Joy, Norwegian Bliss and Norwegian Encore.

Norwegian Cruise Line began going big with waterslides in 2010 when it debuted Norwegian Epic. And boy, did it go big! Norwegian Epic offers three monster waterslides, including the thrilling Epic Plunge — a 200-foot-long tube ride that ends in a swirling bowl. Epic Plunge is part of Norwegian Epic’s Aqua Park, the first water park on a Norwegian ship. Norwegian has since added Aqua Parks to six more new vessels, including its biggest ship, the 4-year-old Norwegian Encore .

Norwegian’s Aqua Parks vary in size and attractions from ship to ship, but some of them, such as the one on Norwegian Breakaway, have as many as five separate multistory waterslides. Yes, you read that right: Five waterslides on a single cruise ship!

On Norwegian Breakaway, the lineup includes twin free-fall slides that drop passengers nearly straight down several stories; two side-by-side twisting racer slides; and a family-friendly slide with a more modest drop. For sheer variety, the complex is hard to beat.

Aqua Park (MSC Cruises)

Where you’ll find it: MSC Seascape, MSC Seashore, MSC Seaview, MSC Seaside, MSC Meraviglia, MSC Bellissima, MSC Grandiosa, MSC Virtuosa, MSC Euribia, MSC World Europa.

Fast-growing MSC Cruises has joined the waterslide wars in the last few years — and in a massive way. Each of the 10 ships the line has unveiled since 2017 offers a full-blown water park on its top deck that’s packed with waterslides and other watery fun.

On North America-based MSC Seaside, the Aqua Park has four waterslides and a children’s play area with interactive water features. The waterslides include two massive, 525-foot-long dueling slides that extend over the sides of the ship. The top of the Aqua Park on MSC Seaside is also home to the liftoff point for a zip line that soars 344 feet across the top of the vessel.

Other MSC Cruises water parks at sea include the winter-themed Polar Aqua Park on MSC Meraviglia, which offers a suspended-in-the-sky ropes course in addition to four waterslides. There’s also the Aquaplay area for the little ones.

A handful of ships even have virtual reality waterslides that involve riders wearing virtual reality headsets as part of the experience.

In all, 14 of MSC Cruises’ 22 vessels now have at least one waterslide on their top decks.

Cabo Rojo-Pedernales cruise port

Region Bahamas - Caribbean - Bermuda

Local Time 2024-05-15 18:40

Port Cabo Rojo-Pedernales cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Cabo Rojo-Pedernales, Dominicana. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.

Port Cabo Rojo is in Dominicana's Pedernales province. The Port is private and owned by Alcoa Corporation (1888-founded, headquartered in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania USA ). Alcoa (Aluminum Corporation of America) uses Puerto de Cabo Rojo for exporting bauxite (rock with a high aluminum content) and limestone.

The Port's cargo terminal is currently operated by Cementos Andino SA (1998-founded Colombian company) which exports cement clinker and concrete, as well as bauxite and limestone.

On June 1, 2022, officially started the construction works on Cabo Rojo Cruise Port (~US$100 million project). The port was completed in December 2023 (Phase 1) and officially inaugurated on January 4, 2024. The project includes building two docking facilities/piers, a modern passenger terminal, a premium yacht marina, a large water park.

When fully completed, Cabo Rojo Cruise Port has projected annual capacity to receive/handle up to 1 million cruise tourists.

The project's Phase I (June 2022 thru December 2023) included building two piers and the cruise terminal. Phase II (planned for completion in 2024-Q2) includes the expansion of the terminal, adding two more cruise piers and a pier dedicated to fishing boats.

The cruise port's annual passenger capacity is around 1 million, targeting predominantly international tourists.

Cabo Rojo cruise port is managed by APORDOM (Dominican Port Authority) and ITM Group (based in Cancun Mexico ). ITM also operates the cruise ports Costa Maya (Yucatan, Quintana Roo Mexico) and Taino Bay/Puerto Plata (Dominicana) . According to ITM, Cabo Rojo's cruise shipping activities could generate annually between US$120-150 million.

Cabo Rojo cruise port project's cost was estimated at ~RD$ 7,1 billion (Dominican pesos/~USD 126 million) and the entire money (a private investment) was provided via a loan from Banco Central de la Republica Dominicana (the country's Central Bank). Reportedly, the project was expected to generate 5000+ local jobs (direct and indirect) thus boosting Pedernales province's economy.

In 2022, Dominican Republic's investments in the Pedernales region were ~US$80-90M, and an additional ~US$150-200M was invested in 2023. The Government's RD$ 15B (~USD 270M) development plan included the construction of three coastal hotels near the cruise port (combined capacity 1600 rooms), building six more hotels, an advanced wastewater treatment plant, supporting infrastructure, internal roads, as well as repairs and expansion of the Barahona Enriquillo Coastal Highway and a new airport (cost ~US$70M).

In February 2023, NCL-Norwegian Cruise Line included Cabo Rojo Pedernales in its 2024 schedule as a new Caribbean destination. NCL's itineraries that visited Cabo Rojo in 2024 (January, March, April) were roundtrips from La Romana (Dominicana) and scheduled for the Norwegian Sky ship . In January 2025 NCL's ship Norwegian Jewel was also listed in Cabo Rojo Port's schedule. Norwegian Sky's 14-day " Panama Canal : Costa Rica and the Dominican Republic" itinerary (Jan 3-17) was a roundtrip from Tampa Florida USA . The Panama Canal segment was a partial transit ( Gatun Lake cruising ).

In 2023, the Dominican Republic also made investments in upgrades to Port Samana , which is often visited by ships of NCL-Norwegian and RCI-Royal Caribbean International .

The road distance from Cabo Rojo Port to Pedernales City is approx 20 km / 12 mi. Pedernales is on the Dominicana-Haiti border and has a border crossing to Anse-a-Pitres. The municipality's economy is based on agriculture (beans, coffee), beef cattle and goats, mining (bauxite), commercial fishing (lobster, lambi) and domestic tourism. The most visited tourist destinations are Bahia de las Aguilas Beach and Sierra de Bahoruco National Park, both a short distance from Pedernales.

Cabo Rojo Airport is approx 16 km / 10 mi southeast of Pedernales City (population around 30,000). The airport serves only domestic flights.

Cabo Rojo (translated Cape Red) signifies both the cape and the beach (Playa Cabo Rojo). This part of Dominicana is known for its bauxite mines, pristine turquoise waters and scenic white-sand beaches, the most popular of which are Cabo Rojo and Bahia de las Aguilas (8-km/5-mi long beach).

Dominican Republic's Cabo Rojo has namesakes in Mexico's Veracruz state (a sand barrier approx 55 km / 34 mi south of Tampico, Tamaulipas, that encloses Laguna de Tamiahua) and Puerto Rico (a city and municipality part of the San German-Cabo Rojo metro area).

Cabo Rojo-Pedernales cruise terminal

When inaugurated (Dec 2023), Puerto Cabo Rojo will have only one floating pier plus several anchorage areas.

When fully completed, the cruise port will have one large concrete piers with four docks/berthing positions (two on each pier) with capacity to accommodate four large ships simultaneously. Another fixed pier will serve fishing vessels.

Cruise Terminal's facilities include a passenger reception hall, aquapark, interactive play zone, outdoor playgrounds for kids, recreational and commercial facilities (including entertainment venues, shops, wellness complex), a large-capacity restaurant, a boutique hotel and an exclusive beach area.

Cabo Rojo's first cruise ship is currently scheduled to dock on December 14th (2023).
