How to Reach Nepal

A holiday in Nepal with its awe-inspiring monasteries and wildlife strikes a deeper connection with its visitors. Stretching across approximately 57,000 sq miles, it is a journey on its own. So, how do you get to Nepal?

By Air : A fast and convenient option, multiple airlines from all major Indian cities fly to Nepal, and most flights have layovers. The Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu is the only international airport in the country. It takes approximately 1.5 hours to reach Kathmandu from Delhi by air. Another international airport, the Pokhara Regional International Airport, is also under construction and set to open in early 2022. International carriers such as AirAsia, Bhutan Airlines, Etihad, Malaysia Airlines, etc., operate flights to Kathmandu. If you choose air travel, book your tickets early, as seats can fill up quickly.

By Train : Trains from Southern Nepal connect travellers via the Sirsiya to Raxaul (India) route. You can also travel from Delhi to Kathmandu by train. The journey is affordable, easy, and quite an adventure. Indians travelling to Nepal do not require a visa via train, and you will find regular passenger and cargo trains.

By Road : Buses are common and a convenient mode of travel to and in Nepal. Direct buses operate from Delhi to Kathmandu. Travelling by car is also very common, but traffic can make the journey expensive. Toll fees and transport permits are necessary if you travel in private vehicles. You can also take a taxi from Sunauli and head to Bhairahawa bus station to Kathmandu. The regions where border-crossing is allowed are Sunauli in UP, Raxaul in Bihar, Banbasa in Uttarakhand, and Panitanki in West Bengal.

While travelling to Nepal, it is important to carry valid ID proof, a passport, and a visa. 

Food in Nepal

Nepalese cuisine consists of many delicious items, and you will find great similarities between the delicacies served in India and Nepal. The local food is healthy and largely vegetarian, but you can also find a variety of red meat options. Although meat is relatively costly in Nepal, the Gorkhali Lamb, an essential curry dish with assorted flavours, and Choila, an extensive Newari cuisine typically made from water buffalo meat, are a must-try.

You can also easily find vegan options, as Nepal has plenty of animal-free delicacies, along with a number of dishes that can be easily modified to suit your palate. Vegetarianism or veganism has been popular in Nepal for a long time, especially given its large Hindu population and cross-cultural culinary influence. Restaurants in Thamel, Durbarmarg, Lazimpath, and Gairidhara mostly serve vegan and vegetarian food. Eating a vegetarian Thakali plate is ideal since it is easily available throughout the country. There are several vegan restaurants in Jhamsikhel, Kathmandu, and Lakeside, where you will find nutritious vegan food at reasonable prices.

Dal Bhat : Dal Bhat is a vegetarian dish that consists of rice, thick lentil soup (dal), vegetable curry (tarkari), and spicy vegetables macerated in vinegar (achaar). 

Newa Cuisine : The Newars were the first inhabitants of the Kathmandu valley. The Newa dish is made of rice flakes, spiced potatoes, pickled vegetables, fresh soybeans with spicy sauce, and slices of raw vegetables. Wo (Bara) is a kind of pancake made with ground lentil batter during the Newari festival. These dal patties make the perfect snacks, and you can chew on them with relish.

Momos : Momos are dumplings, either steamed or fried, and served with a hot sauce. Originally from Tibet, you can find delicious Momos anywhere in Nepal. The dough is made from wheat, while the stuffing has a variety of fillings like cheese, spinach, carrots, cabbage, spices, onions, or even minced meat. 

Dhido : Dhido is a simple flour meal, a perfect substitute for Dal Bhat. It is made from millet, wheat, maize, or buckwheat flour. It is served with a spicy sauce and Gundruk on the side. Gundruk is considered the national food of Nepal and is, therefore, a must-try.

Yomari : Yomari is a sweet dish prepared from coconut, sesame seeds, molasses, and rice dough. It is a holiday food made during the Yomari Punhi festival. You can find this dish in Kathmandu and try its spicy version made from lentils. 

Post Covid-19 Tourist Guide:

Nepal is open to international travellers. According to an update released on January 04, 2022, no quarantine rules apply to fully vaccinated tourists. However, you must be fully vaccinated at least 14 days before travelling. Due to the growing risk of Omicron, Nepal has imposed restrictions on entry (including transit or travel history within the past three weeks) from South Africa, Hong Kong, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Lesotho, Mozambique, Malawi, Namibia, and Eswatini.

• A Covid-19 Negative test report from an RT-PCR test administered 72 hours before departure must be submitted. 
• You must produce a CCMC form along with your vaccination certificate, hotel booking, and mountaineering/trekking/other permits (if applicable).
• Unvaccinated or partially vaccinated travellers need to quarantine for ten days, and they may get their visa from Nepal’s Diplomatic Mission before departure. 
• Children below 5 or younger and people with mild and severe disabilities are exempted from Covid-19 RT-PCR testing.

Tawang is a beautiful place to visit while on a North East Package Tour and in early 2020 we got a chance to explore this beautiful place amidst the tough mountains. • As you will land at the airport, our representative will be waiting there to greet you with a warm welcome.
• From the airport, our representative will take you to a pre-booked hotel in Assam to recover from jet lag.
• After getting freshened up and some rest, you will be taken on a pilgrimage tour to Kamakhya Temple, Umananda Temple and Balaji Temple.
• For dinner and overnight stay, you will be transferred back to the hotel.

Guwahati to Shillong (Meghalaya) via Umiam Lake

• In the morning, enjoy a delicious breakfast.
• Followed by this, check-out of the hotel and be ready to commence a 99 km drive to the beautiful hill station of Shillong in Meghalaya. The entire drive would take around 3-4 hours to complete.
• En route, the gorgeous lake of Umiam, also known as Barapani. Barapani is the largest artificial lake in Meghalaya. Whereas, Umiam is known for its picturesque surrounding which includes Sylvan Hills.

Day – 1 : Guwahati – Shillong

Pickup from Guwahati Airport / Railway Station to Shillong (Capital of Meghalaya- Shillong (1496 m), the capital city has a number of beautiful sites like Shillong peak (10 km from Shillong,), at an altitude of 1965 metre, offers a dazzling view of the idyllic surroundings. Butterfly Museum (closed on Sundays) is another interesting place to visit. One of the most celebrated sacred-groves of the State is the grove at Mawphlang about 25 kilometres off Shillong. This particular grove has for long years been a reservoir of interest for eminent and internationally known botanists. The sacred-groves, which make a unique contribution to the flora and avi-fauna of the State, are undoubtedly of immense interest to all naturalists. Overnight at Shillong.

Day – 3 : Shillong Tour- Mawlynnong

After breakfast drive to Mawlynnong (92 km / 2 hrs), Mawlynnong village, situated 90 kms ahead of Shillong, on the Shillong-Dawki Road, 30 kms from Pynursla, is a village of 75 households with a population of 400. By Road: Thimphu-Gelephu-New Bongai gaon- Guwahati

After breakfast, head towards Cherrapunji for an excursion. The place is commonly called Sohra. A full-day tour begins with a visit to the Nohkalikai Falls. The tallest plunge waterfall in India is impressive.

Then, a visit to the attractive cave called Mawsmai Cave. The fully lit cave in its natural formation makes it distinct from other caves. This cave is home to bats, insects, and some flora species.

A tour of the Thangkharang Park famous for its natural scenery of plains and green valleys and Kynrem Falls. The Khoh Ramrah Rock popularly called Shiva rock is another attraction here. The park is home to various species of plants and trees. A great place to get a close-up sight of Bangladesh plains.

The tour ends with a visit to the Seven Sister Waterfalls (Nohsngithiang Falls). The waterfall plunges from a high and rocky cliff in seven stages naming it seven sister waterfalls. The waterfalls rush through green vegetation on the limestone from the cliff.

The full-day excursion to Shillong commences after breakfast. A short hike to the highest point of Shillong which is Shillong Peak (1962m). The peak is in a semi-circular form and offers an exclusive view from the top. The lush green vegetation, Himalayas, Bangladesh plains, waterfalls, and panoramic city view are worth watching. Witness the religious sacred U Shulong site dedicated to the local deity Leishyllong. Horse riding facility is also available to reach Shillong Peak. Carrying some packed snacks is a great idea.

After the awesome view, return and visit the Mary Help of Christians Cathedral. The high arches, stained glass windows, and aesthetic design of the church are marvelous. The two levels of a chapel and colossal cathedral church are one of the most attractive churches in Shillong.

The three-tier waterfall Elephant Falls is at the foot of an elephant-shaped stone. The attractive part of this waterfall is that it falls in three successions. The waterfall view looks stunning from different vantage points.

The short hill station tour in India was mesmerizing. We find those 5 days were not enough.
