How Pro-Palestinian Students Pushed Trinity College Dublin to Divest

A surge of attention hit Ireland’s most prestigious university over protests that involved Israel, Gaza and the famed medieval Book of Kells.

By Isabella Kwai and Ed O’Loughlin

Isabella Kwai reported from London, and Ed O’Loughlin from Dublin.

Discontent over the war in Gaza had been building for months at Trinity College Dublin, but what had been a rumble last week suddenly became a roar. News broke that Trinity had demanded a heavy sum from the student union after protests had blocked tourist access to the Book of Kells, a major attraction for paying visitors.

Trinity’s request for about $230,000 enraged students and brought a surge of media attention, and last Friday some anti-war demonstrators set up an encampment like those at American schools.

Irish lawmakers worried that the university was trying to stifle independent protest, and there were offers of help from lawyers and pro-Palestinian groups. The university closed parts of its campus that day, citing security concerns.

As the campus dispute became a national one, Trinity, Ireland’s oldest and most prestigious university, agreed on Monday to negotiate with pro-Palestinian demonstrators. Capping several head-spinning days, Trinity agreed first to abandon some Israeli investments , a step that nearly all U.S. colleges and universities have so far resisted, and then said on Wednesday that it would look into divesting from all such investments .

“It felt like we had won,” said Jenny Maguire, president-elect of the student union. “Not just us, but every person that campaigned for this had won. We got exactly what we wanted and what we came there to do . ”

She said of the university, “It was shocking how quickly they turned around.”

Soon the encampment of tents and two Palestinian flags, which about 60 students had hurried to erect just days earlier, was packing up. On Wednesday evening, students wearing checkered kaffiyeh scarves collected their gear and left. Within minutes, discolored patches of grass were all that remained.

A spokeswoman for Trinity declined to comment on any link between its turnabout, the monetary demand and the resulting scrutiny. The invoice, as the university called it, against the student union had not been discussed in divestment negotiations but would be discussed later, she said. Student leaders said that they hoped that it would be rescinded.

But to some students and outside observers, it was obvious that Trinity had badly miscalculated. Rather than quelling them, it had added fuel to the protests that were threatening not only the finances but also the reputation of a university whose alumni include writers like Oscar Wilde, Bram Stoker and Samuel Beckett and a procession of illustrious politicians, physicists and philosophers.

“The message that fine sent was that Trinity was trying to quash and union-bust student protest,” said Aiesha Wong, a spokeswoman for the student union, who called it a “fear-mongering tactic.”

David Wolfe, editor in chief of Trinity News, the student newspaper, said, “They may have decided that it would cost us less to divest from Israel than it would to not divest.”

The pro-Palestinian movement has been active at Trinity for years, a part of the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement against Israel. And at Trinity, as at other campuses around the world, it gained momentum after the current war began seven months ago.

Students, faculty and staff members have pressed the university to more strongly condemn Israel’s military offensive in Gaza. Pro-Palestinian groups have shared petitions, written open letters and staged disruptions of campus meetings.

But nothing drew as much attention as the 214,000-euro fee the university assessed for blocking the entrance to the Book of Kells, a world-renowned illuminated manuscript some 12 centuries old that is housed in the university library .

Each year, the book draws about a million paying visitors. Their tourism financially supplements the university, and past protests that had nothing to do with Israel have impeded access to it as a way of putting pressure on the Trinity administration. The invoice covered protests for other causes that obstructed entry to the Book of Kells exhibition, but it was the pro-Palestinian demonstrators who drew most of the attention.

In the days after news of the fine became public, more students became involved in the anti-Israel movement, the student union said. Plans were already being made for an encampment, but the timetable was accelerated.

Lawmakers called on Trinity to withdraw what they described as a “drastic fine,” and a group of them sent a letter to the university asking officials to ensure that students had space to protest.

As at universities in the United States and elsewhere, there were some complaints that student leaders had failed to address antisemitism rising in tandem with anti-Zionism. Jewish students felt excluded by the student union’s stance, Agne Kniuraite, the chairwoman of the college’s Jewish society, said in an article last month .

“Jewish students have been subjected to an unending barrage of prejudice and spoken of the isolation, fear and sense of rejection they have experienced on campus this year,” she wrote.

On Monday, anti-Israel protest leaders and the university met in the office of a senior dean to negotiate an agreement.

“They made it clear that they would immediately divest from companies in the occupied territories,” said Ms. Maguire, the president-elect of the student union, in what she described as a startling shift from Trinity’s earlier statements. The university agreed not to call in outside forces to disband the protests or the encampment, as some U.S. schools have done, and in a statement released after the meeting, Trinity called the response of other institutions “disproportionate.”

The school said it would divest from three Israeli companies listed by the U.N. for involvement with settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories, and had offered a place to and waived fees for eight Palestinian scholars.

Protest leaders said that they pushed for a stronger stance, and on Wednesday, the university agreed to explore divesting its endowment of all Israeli ties. The students are still negotiating with administrators on how to ensure that the university keeps its commitments over the long run.

A university spokeswoman declined to say how much money it has invested in Israel, but said it involved 13 companies and was a “very tiny percentage” of the college’s 250 million euro endowment; American universities have said similar things about their own investments. Ms. Maguire said that students were told in meetings with administrators that the investments totaled at least 70,000 euros.

Aidan Regan, an associate professor of politics and international relations at University College Dublin, said he imagined that Trinity’s management would have weighed the financial and reputational cost of clearing away protesters and instead looked for a deal.

With public opinion in Ireland favoring the students, he said, it was “unthinkable” that the university would call in the police to forcibly remove them.

Many Irish people have drawn parallels between Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territories and centuries of British rule in their country.

“Ireland has a long history of Palestine solidarity, motivated by a shared colonial history,” said Hannah Boast, a fellow at the University of Edinburgh who has worked on politics and culture in Israel and Palestine, and said the encampment would have added to the pressure on the university to act.

A decision on divestment was too big to be attributed to image rehabilitation after inadvertent bad press, she said, but “the divestment announcement certainly seems to have made the bad press from the fine go away.”

Pomona College: At least one person was arrested after scuffles broke out among pro-Palestinian protesters , private security officers and police officers outside Pomona College’s commencement in Los Angeles.

U.W. Milwaukee: Protesters at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee will take down a pro-Palestinian encampment that had stood for two weeks under an agreement reached with the school , university officials said.

Duke: Dozens of students walked out  of Duke University’s commencement ceremony as Jerry Seinfeld, who has been vocal about his support for Israel, received an honorary degree.

Turning to Al Jazeera :  Students active in campus protests value the Arab news network’s on-the-ground coverage  and its perspective on the Israel-Hamas war. They draw distinctions between it and major American outlets.

Black Colleges :  The White House appears anxious about President Biden’s speech at Morehouse College, a historically Black institution. But for complex reasons, such campuses have had far less visible Gaza tensions .

A Different Approach :  University leaders in Britain have so far adopted a more permissive attitude to pro-Palestinian encampments than their U.S. counterparts. Here’s why .

Columbia University cancels main 2024 commencement ceremony, will host multiple ceremonies instead

By Jesse Zanger , Naveen Dhaliwal , Mahsa Saeidi

Updated on: May 6, 2024 / 9:27 PM EDT / CBS New York

NEW YORK -- Columbia University is canceling its main commencement ceremony after weeks of protests and turmoil on campus .

Instead of one single commencement ceremony, the various schools involved will hold smaller, individual ceremonies, the university announced Monday.

The ceremonies won't happen on the South Lawn, where the larger commencement ceremony had originally been scheduled to take place on May 15, and where students had been encamped until police cleared them out .

The protesters had pitched tents and then occupied a building , demanding an Israel-Hamas war ceasefire and the school divest from companies that they said profit from the war.

Many Jewish students CBS New York spoke with said the protests made them feel unsafe, at-risk, and harassed.

"By canceling graduation the university is giving in to both of those demands. They are shutting it down and canceling joy," student Elisha Baker said.

A university official said security concerns were one of the main reasons behind the school's decision.

The university said despite the changes, the students will get the celebration they want, and the revised plan is a result of conversations with students about what sort of program they preferred.

"We are determined to give our students the celebration they deserve, and that they want," Columbia said in a statement. "Based on their feedback, we have decided to make the centerpiece of our Commencement activities our Class Days and school-level ceremonies, where students are honored individually alongside their peers, rather than the University-wide ceremony that is scheduled for May 15."

Most of the school-based graduation ceremonies will now take place at the schools' Baker Athletics Complex, which is about five miles away. Tickets are required.

"Our students emphasized that these smaller-scale, school-based celebrations are most meaningful to them and their families. They are eager to cross the stage to applause and family pride and hear from their school's invited guest speakers. As a result, we will focus our resources on those school ceremonies and on keeping them safe, respectful, and running smoothly. A great deal of effort is already underway to reach that goal, and we understand the Deans and school teams are looking forward to working with their students to incorporate the most creative and meaningful ideas to celebrate this extraordinary moment," the university said.

"It's a bittersweet ending... we also had our classes online, and no high school graduation," senior Esin Gogus said. "I'm frustrated, but I am OK with it as long as, you know, the safety and well-being of students is ensured. I think that's totally fine."

"I just heard it's always crazy. The streets are filled with parents, everyone is excited, and now I won't get to experience that," dental student Ari Rosen said. "I wish they took control a littler earlier and didn't let it get to this point."

House Speaker Mike Johnson again calls for Columbia's president to be fired

News of the change reached Capitol Hill.

Speaker of the House Mike Johnson released a statement, again calling on Columbia's board to fire President Dr. Minouche Shafik .

"President Shafik and Columbia University administrators have displayed a shocking unwillingness to control their campus. They've allowed outside agitators and terrorist-sympathizing students and faculty to rewrite campus rules and spew vile, anti-Jewish aggression. Now, thousands of students who've worked hard to achieve their degrees will not get the recognition they deserve," Johnson said. "Because it is abundantly clear that President Shafik would rather cede control to Hamas supporters than restore order, Columbia's Board of Trustees should immediately remove her and appoint a new president who will. Our once great universities desperately need strong moral leadership, now more than ever."

Johnson had previously visited the campus while the encampment was still up, and called for Shafik's ouster at that time. He also said the National Guard should be considered, if necessary, to remove campus protesters.

Dozens of students walked out of Duke University’s commencement ceremony on Sunday to protest guest speaker Jerry Seinfield over his support of Israel during the war in Gaza.

Video of the incident shows a group of students walking out of their seats and carrying a Palestinian flag as soon as the comedian and TV star was called to the stage.

The attention to the protesters was quickly diverted by the cheering crowd, who chanted, “Jerry! Jerry!” as Seinfeld would go on to give his speech and accept an honorary degree from Duke.

Dozens of students walked out of Duke University's commencement ceremony to protest speaker Jerry Seinfeld and his support for Israel.

While Seinfeld appeared to receive support from the majority of the crowd, once the cheers eased up, several boos and shouts of “Free Palestine,” could be heard erupting through.

Seinfeld has been vocal over his support for the Jewish State following Hamas’ brutal Oct. 7 massacre that killed more than 1,200 people and kidnapped another 252.

The comedian also met with families of the hostages and visited a kibbutz destroyed by the terror attack during a trip to Israel in December.

Seinfeld, however, opted to steer clear of the war during his speech at Duke — and instead told students to embrace hard work and what they love as they move forward on the next major step in their lives, according to WRAL News .

Seinfeld didn't mention Israel or the war in his speech.

“Find something where you love the good parts and don’t mind the bad parts too much — the torture you’re comfortable with,” the comedian joked.

“This is the golden path to victory in life. Work. Exercise. Relationships,” he added.” They all have a solid component of pure torture, and they are all 1,000% worth it.”

Never miss a story.

The walkout was the only disruption to the commencement ceremony, with no other incident taking place during or after Seinfeld’s speech.

The animus Seinfeld faced at Duke was not the first time he was targeted by protesters over his support for Israel.

In February, Seinfeld was heckled by a group of protesters after leaving an event in the Upper East Side, where demonstrators called him a “genocide supporter.”

Seinfeld told students to embrace hard work during his speech at Duke.

The Duke walkout was the latest in manifestations that have erupted in college campuses across the US calling on universities to divest and end their ties with Israel over the war in Gaza.

About 60 students at Rutgers University walked out of their own commencement ceremony on Sunday to protest the war, with many of the protesters swapping graduation caps for keffiyehs, NJ.com reports.

The Rutgers walkout broke out halfway through the ceremony, with students waving around a banner with the colors of the Palestinian flag.

University officials did not immediately respond to The Post’s request for comment.

On Saturday, students also held a walkout at Virginia Commonwealth University during a commencement ceremony addressed by Republican Gov. Glenn Younking, and at the University of California, Berkeley, students stalled their own ceremony as they waved Palestinian flags in the middle of the stadium.

Thomas jefferson university is getting a lot of attention after thursday's nursing student graduation ceremony, by cherise lynch • published may 10, 2024 • updated on may 10, 2024 at 5:53 pm.

It's graduation season, a time when students celebrate the end of a chapter after years of hard work.

Walking across the stage during commencement and getting your degree is an unforgettable moment. Well, for some students at one college in Philadelphia, their graduation is one that will always be remembered - for an odd reason.

Thomas Jefferson University is getting a lot of attention after Thursday's nursing student graduation ceremony.

A video of a presenter mispronouncing the names of several students has gone viral on TikTok and other social media platforms.

In the video, you can hear the presenter struggling to say many of the graduate's names. For example, instead of "Molly Elizabeth Camp" the speaker said "Mollina -zabeth- cap" or instead of "Thomas" they said "Tha-mo-may."

A spokesperson from the school sent out a statement apologizing to the students, as well as their families and loved ones, saying in part, "The mispronunciations occurred due to the way phonetic spellings were presented on the speaker’s cards, which was noted when the presenter apologized during the ceremony."

The full statement:

"The leadership and faculty of Thomas Jefferson University extend our sincerest apologies for the mispronunciations of the names of several of our graduating nursing students during our recent commencement ceremony. This ceremony is a celebration of the significant achievements of our students, and each graduate deserves to have their name honored correctly on this pivotal day.

We also recognize that commencement is not only a milestone for our students but also a deeply important day for their families and loved ones who have supported them throughout their educational journey, and we are deeply sorry for any disappointment this may have caused. The mispronunciations occurred due to the way phonetic spellings were presented on the speaker’s cards, which was noted when the presenter apologized during the ceremony. This unfortunate error does not reflect the immense respect we have for our graduates and the value we place on their hard-earned accomplishments."

Who were the ‘outsiders’ at Columbia University’s Hamilton Hall?

israel hamas conflict columbia university nypd riot gear

When James Carlson was arrested inside Columbia University’s Hamilton Hall , he was already under investigation for snatching an Israeli flag out of a man’s hand near campus and setting it on fire.

That wasn’t the first time Carlson, who has no affiliation with Columbia, had run afoul of the law. He was arrested in San Francisco in 2005 during a violent protest organized by an anarchist group, according to a senior law enforcement official.

The 40-year-old animal rights lawyer is among the group of “professional outsiders” cast by the New York City police department and mayor as having a significant role in the takeover of Hamilton Hall.

arrested at columbia university's Hamilton Hall during student protests, but he is not a student; he is an animal rights lawyer

Large, drawn-out protests like the one at Columbia have a tendency to attract people with a diffuse set of ideologies and motivations, experts say. Roughly 30% of those arrested at Hamilton Hall on Tuesday had no affiliation with the school , according to university officials.

But while there is no doubt that the occupation of the building amounted to a dramatic escalation in tactics, it remains unclear how large an influence outsiders like Carlson have had on the overall student protest movement at Columbia and nearby colleges, which began more than two weeks ago.

Some of the student protesters think the narrative pushed by city and university officials — of dangerous outsiders co-opting the demonstrations — is fueled by ulterior motives.

“I really struggle a lot with the whole narrative of outside agitators because I see it as a means through which to justify violence,” Soph Askanse, a junior at the neighboring Barnard College,  said in an interview. “And to claim that because individuals are not students, they are thus deserving of police brutality.”

Rory Wilson, 22, a Columbia senior who did not participate in the protests, offered a different take.

After midnight on Tuesday, Wilson and a friend placed themselves outside a Hamilton Hall door for several minutes to prevent the protesters from barricading it shut. Video footage released by the city showed a 63-year-old activist named Lisa Fithian at the center of the action, directing the protesters on how to barricade the doors and referring to Wilson and his friend as “assholes.”

“She was right in the middle of it, instructing them how to better set up the barricades,” said Wilson, who has Jewish heritage but is not a practicing Jew. “Given that the barricades were a pretty central part of the plan of how to take over Hamilton, I’d expect that she would have been pretty central in the logistics planning.”

Fithian, who has not responded to requests for comment, was not among those arrested on Tuesday.

Lisa Fithian

New York City Mayor Eric Adams and Columbia University President Minouche Shafik called out the prevalence of outsiders after the protesters seized Hamilton Hall. The police swarmed the building late Tuesday and made a wave of other arrests at Columbia and the nearby City College of New York.

A total of 46 people have been charged with trespassing in connection with the building’s occupation, according to the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office.

At least 13 of them had no affiliation with the university, a Columbia spokesperson said. The rest included at least 14 Columbia undergraduates, nine graduate students and two employees. Six others were students from affiliated schools, the university spokesman said.

“The numbers shared by the NYPD about arrests made on April 30 reflect the expectations we had regarding the occupation of Hamilton Hall,” said Ben Chang, Columbia’s vice president of communications.

“A significant portion of those who broke the law and occupied Hamilton Hall were outsiders. While 14 were Columbia undergraduate students, the majority were a mix of adults, including graduate students, two employees, and outsiders unaffiliated with Columbia University.”

NBC News matched the names in court records with names and affiliations from the Columbia email directory and found roughly the same percentage of people with no ties to the university.

At least eight of those arrested inside Hamilton Hall were above the age of 30, NBC News found, and the two employees appear to be junior researchers working in Columbia University labs.

Overall, of the 112 people arrested at Columbia on Tuesday, 32 had no affiliation with the school, or 29%, according to the mayor’s office and the New York Police Department. Out of the 170 people arrested at the City College of New York, 102 people had no ties to the school, or 60%.

Allie Wong, a Ph.D. student at the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, was among a group of protesters who formed a human chain in front of Hamilton Hall. She said a police officer roughed her up when they broke up the crowd, striking her with an unknown object that caused a golf ball-sized welt on her head.

The New York Fire Department said three people suffered minor injuries during the arrests. Two were taken to the hospital and one was treated at the scene.

Wong, who was charged with trespassing, would not comment on the role of outsiders in the protests. But she said the description of them as “outside agitators” was “baseless and incorrect.”

Wilson, the student with Jewish family members who tried to stop the barricading of Hamilton Hall, said he understood the rationale for the pro-Palestinian demonstrations on campus but believes that the building occupation was not productive.

“I totally understand why they would be extraordinarily sad and angry about the loss of life in Gaza,” Wilson said of the broader protest movement.

He added that he believes a college campus is a place where the conflict should be analyzed and debated, and people’s voices should be heard. “That was not happening with the mob tactics, the smashing of university property and intimidating students,” he said.

The outsiders

Carlson, who also goes by Cody Carlson and Cody Tarlson, was the oldest of the protesters arrested inside Hamilton Hall. Neither he nor his lawyer returned requests for comment.

Carlson has been a frequent presence at protests around the city since the start of Israel’s offensive in Gaza following Hamas’ Oct. 7 assault, according to the NYPD official.

He is accused of taking part in a chaotic incident near the Columbia campus during a protest on April 20. As a 22-year-old man carrying an Israeli flag was walking around the demonstration, Carlson yanked the flag out of his hands and took off, police said.

As the victim gave chase, some other members of the crowd threw rocks at the man, police said. Carlson was captured on video setting the flag on fire with a lighter, according to a criminal complaint.

He has pleaded not guilty to charges of arson and criminal mischief, according to court records. The Manhattan District Attorney is investigating the incident as a possible hate crime, a spokesperson said.

A graduate of Brooklyn Law School, he worked as a litigation fellow with the Humane Society of the U.S. from 2014 to 2016, a spokeswoman said. Carlson has also worked as an undercover investigator who recorded animal abuse at places like dairy farms and slaughterhouses, according to a 2015 New York Times story.

‘‘Learn to walk the walk and talk the talk,’’ Carlson told the paper.

Years earlier, he was arrested at a demonstration in San Francisco where a police officer was struck in the head by an unknown object and suffered skull fractures while confronting protesters. The rally had been organized by a group called Anarchist Action, which opposed the Group of Eight summit held in Scotland the previous week, according to local news clips.

Carlson, who was then 21, was charged with rioting, resisting arrest and wearing a mask. The case was dropped two years later after he completed a pretrial diversion program, according to a San Francisco court clerk.

The group of outsiders arrested on Tuesday at the City College of New York included a 32-year-old man who has an extensive history of protest-related arrests dating back to 2012 in California, according to a senior law enforcement official.

The man, Rudy Ralph Martinez, has a criminal record in the New York area that includes charges of disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and obstruction, the official said. The disposition of the cases was not known.

Martinez’s lawyer did not respond to a request for comment.

Another man with no university ties who was arrested on Tuesday at City College has had “numerous protest-related arrests,” the official said. The man, Jacob Isaac Gabriel, was part of a group that disrupted the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade last year, the official said. It was not clear whether he was convicted.

Gabriel’s lawyer did not respond to a request for comment.

Brian Higgins, a former Bergen County police chief and lecturer at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, said large protests often serve as a magnet for a certain kind of person.

“The larger number are going to be those people who are well meaning,” Higgins said. “They have a cause — whether it’s the George Floyd murder or Palestine and Israel. But there are those who use those well meaning people for other purposes.”

“It’s not always nefarious,” he added. “But there are people who make a living off of protests.”

CORRECTION (May 6, 2024, 1:36 p.m. ET) : A previous version of this article misstated where Allie Wong is studying for her Ph.d. She is a student at the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, not the philosophy department.
