Nickel Creek Nashville shows postponed due to illness
Nickel Creek has just announced the postponement of their three shows this weekend at The Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, and the cancellation of their MerleFest sets due to Chris Thile suffering from an ongoing illness, and a need to take a break and recover.
The following statement has been shared by the band…
Dearest fellow music lovers,
We are utterly heartbroken to share that we are postponing our shows from tonight through May 4.
Nothing upsets us more than not being able to deliver a scheduled performance (which has happened just once before in our 34 years as a band), especially because as devoted concertgoers ourselves, we know how much goes into attending. We are deeply moved (and now further saddened) to see and hear the stories of how far you were traveling/have travelled to join us at these shows, and will be doing EVERYTHING IN OUR POWER to make it up to you over the course of this year’s touring. We are so grateful for each and every one of you, and so, so, SO sorry about this news.
To make a long story short, Chris started the tour with a sinus infection, then caught the flu, and attempted to sing through it, which damaged his vocal cords. His doctor, one of the country’s top voice specialists, says that he’d be risking far more serious damage if we proceeded, and has been prescribed a couple weeks of rest and rehab. So, to everyone who put so much into attending these shows, our extraordinary crew, and our management team (who are working tirelessly to make this as right as is humanly possible), please accept our sincerest apologies. We can’t WAIT to get back on the horse in late May, and look forward MORE THAN EVER to our next evening with you.
Xoxoxo, Chris Sara, and Sean
Make up dates at The Ryman have been scheduled for September 4-6, where any existing tickets will be honored. It may be advisable for ticket holders to contact the Ryman box office to make sure you are properly ticketed for the September shows.

Nickel Creek Postpone Celebrants Shows in Nashville, New York and More
Americana darlings Nickel Creek have announced they’ll sadly have to cancel a string of dates of their spring tour–in support of their first LP in nine years–in April. The ensemble comprised Grammy-nominated mandolinist Chris Thile, violinist Sara Watkins and guitarist Sean Watkins announced the postponement of the shows on social media and noted the postponements follow only one since their 34 years as a band.
“Nothing upsets us more than not being able to deliver a scheduled performance (which has happened just once before in our 34 years as a band), especially because as devoted concertgoers ourselves, we know how much goes into attending,” the band wrote. “We are deeply moved (and now further saddened) to see and hear the stories of how many of you were traveling/have travelled to join us at these shows, and will be doing EVERYTHING IN OUR POWER to make it up to you over the course of this year’s touring. We are so grateful for each and every one of you, and so, so, SO sorry about the news.”
They went on to describe the circumstances behind their postponements, sharing that Thile began the tour with a sinus infection, then caught the flu and did his best to power through it, which damaged his vocal chords. They went on to write, “[Thile’s] doctor, one of the country’s top voice specialists, says that he’d be risking far more serious damage if we proceeded and has prescribed a couple of weeks of rest and rehab.” They went on to thank everyone, including their fans, their crew and their management team – who are currently doing everything to make things amended as smoothly and quickly as possible and closed the message with hopes that they’ll be performing once again in late May.
The shows affected include a previously announced rescheduling set for Avondale Brewing Company in Birmingham, Ala. which will now take place on May 29; their shows in Nashville, Tenn., shows on April 27-29, which will now take place on Sept. 4-6; their appearance at Merlefest, and appearances in Charlottesville, Va., York, Pa and New York which rescheduled dates are TBA. For questions regarding ticket tickets, the band asked fans not to hesitate to get in touch with their point of purchase.

Nickel Creek *POSTPONED to 6/22*
With special guest hawktail, this performance has been postponed to june 22. all existing tickets will be valid on this date and refunds available at your point of purchase. .
Nickel Creek is the platinum-selling, internationally renowned roots trio of mandolinist Chris Thile, violinist Sara Watkins and guitarist Sean Watkins. The Grammy-winning band has revolutionized folk and roots music since first performing together as children at a pizza parlor in San Diego in 1989, signing to acclaimed roots label Sugar Hill Records after wowing the bluegrass circuit for a decade. Nickel Creek quickly broke through in 2000 with their Grammy-nominated, Alison Krauss-produced self-titled LP, which showcased not just their instrumental virtuosity but their burgeoning songwriting prowess. The trio quickly followed that effort with the Krauss-produced This Side , a landmark release that earned Nickel Creek the Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album and brought their progressive take on acoustic music to a broader audience, greatly influencing the sound and trajectory of roots music in the process. 2005’s Grammy-nominated Why Should the Fire Die? found the trio pushing genre boundaries even further, incorporating elements of alt-rock and indie pop into their singular brand of acoustic music. Nickel Creek’s most recent album, 2014’s critically acclaimed and joyously received A Dotted Line , ended a seven-year recording and touring hiatus for the band, during which members explored other musical and creative avenues.
Each member of Nickel Creek has taken part in many outside projects over the years, too. Thile is a 2012 recipient of a MacArthur Fellowship and served as the host of the American radio variety show Live from Here (formerly A Prairie Home Companion ) from 2016 to 2020. Over the course of Nickel Creek’s career, Thile has released collaborative albums alongside world-renowned musicians like Yo-Yo Ma, Edgar Meyer, Brad Mehldau and Stuart Duncan. His Grammy-winning band Punch Brothers has released six studio albums, the most recent being 2022’s Hell on Church Street , a re-imagining of the beloved 1983 Tony Rice album Church Street Blues . Sean Watkins has kept busy outside of Nickel Creek, too, co-founding Watkins Family Hour alongside Sara, releasing three albums with the collective and maintaining the long-running collaborative show in Los Angeles for a decade. Sean has also released a string of solo albums, most recently 2020’s This Is Who We Are with the Bee Eaters. Sara Watkins’ extracurricular projects include the aforementioned Watkins Family Hour band, as well as co-founding the Grammy-winning roots trio I’m With Her alongside Aoife O’Donovan and Sarah Jarosz. Sara has released four studio albums, most recently 2021’s Under the Pepper Tree . She has contributed fiddle to recordings by artists like Phoebe Bridgers, the Killers and John Mayer.
Hawktail is the instrumental acoustic quartet of fiddler Brittany Haas, bassist Paul Kowert, guitarist Jordan Tice, and mandolinist Dominick Leslie. Though at first glance it looks like an acoustic superpicker side-project, their all-original music is cohesive and unique, distinguishing them as an ensemble with a sound built from the ground up. Flush with orchestral sweeps and sparse vigils, with strains of the American South and the North Atlantic, this cosmopolitan sound is not what you'd expect from a string band. Each member of Hawktail brings a strong individuality to the project. Haas, whose 2004 self-titled release instantly became the touchstone for a generation of old-time fiddlers, has since lent her sound to Crooked Still, Live From Here, Steve Martin, and David Rawlings, where she played alongside Kowert, well known as the Grammy-winning Punch Brothers' virtuosic bass player. Tice is a rare guitar player whose music showcases his unique identity and a particular knack for song and tune-writing, and Leslie is a versatile mandolinist whose rhythmic sensibility has made him ubiquitous on the acoustic music scene for over a decade. However, despite each of their ability to contribute to many musical situations, something special happens when they unite as Hawktail. Together, they have fostered a reputation as a rare ensemble of composers and instrumentalists able to take the listener on a journey, without the use of words.

After another hiatus during which members explored other musical and creative avenues, the Platinum-selling, Grammy Award-winning trio gathered for a creative retreat in Santa Barbara during the pandemic and emerged with a bounty of disparate but loosely connected songs that resulted in 2023’s highly anticipated album, Celebrants. The record is perhaps their most audacious — with “18 interconnected tracks, Nickel Creek offers another world for listeners, not necessarily one to escape into — these songs are nuanced and honest, not fantasy — but one suited for introspection.” ( NPR ) The entire enterprise is, naturally, shot through with the band’s virtuosic picking and shiver-inducing harmonies. The lyrics — addressing love, friendship, time, and the universal travails of travel — combine the poetic and plain-spoken, hitting a sweet spot of ethereal and relatable as bridges are built, crossed, burned, and rebuilt.
