I went to a Yelle gig in London but I mainly went to see NZCA/Lines who were the supporting act. That may seem a bit odd but I first saw them supporting a Metronomy gig and loved them. I would happily see them as a main act. They didn't disappoint this time either! With new songs and new instruments they kept it fresh, pounding the drums and owning the synth, all while looking amazing. I overheard a few in the crowd saying they hadn't heard them before but liked it, a good sign—maybe you'll like them too!

Did You Know?

  • Varying from simple lines and geometric forms to diverse and complex forms, the Nazca Lines are mysterious earth drawings that are over 1500 years old.
  • The site of the Nazca Lines is a UNESCO world heritage site since 1994.
  • The lines can only be truly appreciated from above, yet they date back from a time when there was no means of aerial flight.
  • The most iconic figures include many animals such as the humming bird, monkey and spider which are often replicated in modern jewellery and ceramics today.
  • Historians’ theories investigating the creation of the lines range from the mapping of an astrological calendar, to marking the path of underground desert aqueducts, all the way to some kind of alien creations! There is still no consensus on how or why the lines were made.
  • Like the Nazca Lines, historians still debate about when the aqueducts were built.

  • Original passport – Important!

Nazca Lines FAQS

Do we recommend the Nazca Lines Flight?

Yes. The flight is the ONLY way to see the classic pictures on postcards with views of the lines from above. There are hundreds of figures scattered across the desert, which you will only be able to see by taking the flight! The astronaut, the monkey, the hummingbird and the spider can only be truly appreciated from the air.

Can Peru Hop help me reserve the flight?

We recommend to book your Nazca Lines Flight a couple of days in advance using the booking link on this page. The flight price is $85 USD (plus 30 soles airport tax and 47 soles for the Nazca Lines Tourist Ticket, both paid in cash upon arrival). Pre-booking ensures that you have your flight slot booked for when you arrive. In addition, Nazca Airlines will pick you up from the bus terminal to take you to the airport and drop you off after the flight back in the town centre.

SPECIAL DEAL FOR PERU HOP PASSENGERS – Tours booked with this selected operator Nazca Airlines via FindLocalTrips.com allow date changes right up until the day before your tour begins at no extra cost.

I have read that there are a lot of accidents. Is the flight safe?

Yes, years ago there were occasional accidents as there was not so much control on flight safety. Now flights are only authorized to leave during appropriate weather conditions and all the flight companies must adhere to strict safety guidelines. If the weather conditions change then no flight company is allowed to depart from the airport. Weather conditions are best early in the morning, so we always recommend getting down to Nazca as early as possible for the flight to avoid disappointment. There have been no accidents for many years and we only work with the safest company, Nazca Airlines.

I suffer from motion sickness. Would you still recommend the flight?

The flight is not recommended for those susceptible to flight sickness. The planes are typically small 8/10 seat passenger planes and although the flight duration is around 30 minutes, it allows passengers on both sides of the plane see all the Lines. Consequently, the plane must encircle each line first from one side and then from the other.

What else is there to see in Nazca?

The main thing to do in Nazca is the Nazca Lines Flight. Other than that there are a couple of museums that are worth a look and also the Chauchilla cemetery with excellently preserved ancient mummies. We advise against spending more than the day trip here.

I am traveling from Lima to Cusco and want to do the Nazca Lines Flight but do not want to have to spend a night in Nazca itself. Is this possible?

For an easy transfer, private shuttles ($16 USD / one-way / 2.5 hrs) make direct trips from Huacachina to Nazca every day. The service includes pick-up directly from Huacachina (Wild Rover Hostel) and drop off at the airport in Nazca for the flight.

I want to see the Nazca Lines but do not want to pay for the flight…

Travelling with Peru Hop will also give you the opportunity to see the Nazca Lines for free. A visit to the Nazca Lines Viewing Tower is included in your pass from where you can see three of the Lines. The onboard guide will give you information on the intriguing history behind the ancient Nazca culture and ongoing theories behind these mysterious Lines.

Together with my wife we travel to Nazca for a two days. We've tried to find a tour to San Fernando park. The only one company who helped us was Nazca Trips. At 10 PM the manadger of company Raul find to us buggy to ride and a guide for the next day trip! Thanks to him we get this great and fantastic tour. Speccial thanks to the guide Susy. She was exellent, tell us about everything and always help to have a photo and to see a great view. Nazca Trips is good and reliable company and i recommend it!

Professional approach to the client. Very good contact. I booked two tours with this tour operator - a Nazca flight and a trip to Chauchilla Cemetery. I am very happy with both. Also they picked me up at the bus station, took me to the hotel. And on the last day they provided transport to the station. I recommend the most !!! You will not regret it for sure. Thank you Raul for the entire organization. See you next time!

Excellente agence!

Booked a nazca and palpa lines land tour with Raul last week as the flight tour was not available that day. The tour guide-Julio picked me up promptly and took me to serval lookouts and the museum. He was nice, kind and patient. The geoglyphs were amazing and the whole trip was pleasant though the main mirador for nazca lines was closed due to political reason. We were able to see the big feline at hillside that was discovered not long ago as well.

Recomendo a 200%!

Super recomendo!

Fantastic company who made the flight possible in a very tight schedule!!

One of the best guides I've had in South America- extremely knowledgeable and so much fun. I had a great day exploring Naza and recommend Raul to anyone looking for a guide here.

We love the Cahuachi tour with Raul! Very interesting explanations, we learned a lot about Nazca population.

Raul will take good care of you. As an educated historian he has deep knowledge and an enthusiastic interest in the Nazca region archeological sites. He took me to two sites in particular I had no previous knowledge of but blew me away. His lunch recommendation was amazing.

Culturalmente interesante A1!!!

Great Nazca Lines Flights and great service of Raul. Since the first contact until the end of the tour. Raul take care of our Family and let us enjoy a lovely day Tour in nazca. 1000 % recommended!

Raul is an excellent tour guide and a wonderful human being! I highly recommend this tour, it's a must have experience!

Amazing guides - so knowledgeable and passionate! Would highly recommend.

Well organised tour with a lot of additional information about the history of the Nazca lines.

During my years of traveling and backpacking, I have come across many many tourist guides, but very very few of them would see you as their family member. This is not the style of Raul, he genuinely sees my requests as his and handles them neatly. From picking me up at the bus station at 6 AM, to welcoming me to his home and meeting his parents and brother, to transferring me to the airport for the Nasca line flight, to whisking me through the town to get my phone recharged, then dropping me at the bus stop for the collectivo to the torre mirador, Paul has been so caring, responsive and respectful with a mindset on how to serve his clients the best way he could. He even phoned to make sure I didn't miss my bus to Paracas. My friends recommended me Raul's business, Nazca Trip, and I hereby pass the words of a high recommendation of his service to you as well. Thank you Raul. Good luck to you with your startup and may your dream of being an archeologist come true!

It was great and very interesting to do the flight and Pyramid Tour with this organisation! They are very friendly helpful and professional. Raul informed us well before the flight. And after the great flight we had good archeological and historical tour by Raul. He makes you think further about the mysterie of the Nazca Lines. We had a great day. We recommand the organisation and Raul the guide!!

I went to the chauchilla cementery with raul. He told me a lot, was really enthusiastic and you could tell he knews many things.

I did the flight over the Nazca Lines and the tour to Cahuachi Pyramids through Nazca trips. Both were an amazing experience, well organized since the first contact. Raul was waiting for me at bus station and brought me to this wonderful places. He has alot of knowledge about Nazca Civilization and loves sharing deep history. I recommend % 1000 do the Flight and the tour with this travel agency.

Very nice flight over the nazca lines! My guide raul was very helpful, patient and a polite person. Unforgettable flight-experience!

Nazca flights are amazing and cool. I booked my trips through nazca trips agency. Raul is a nice person and he explained history of nazca well. I will recommend them if you come to nazca, and please experience the nazca flights!!

Nazca Lines Tour 2 Days Plus Ballestas/ Paracas Islands, Huacachina, Peruvian Winery

Nazca Lines Tour 2 days–Unfold the great enigma of the unique Nasca Lines, with the naked eye from the window of an airplane by a private guide.

On this amazing experience, you’ll spot the outlines of a parrot, hummingbird, spider, condor, dog, whale, monkey with a tail wound like a top, giant spirals, huge trapezoids, and, perhaps oddest of all. These lines are located in San José desert, which is spectacularly marked by 70 giant plant and animal figures, as well as a warren of mysterious geometric lines, carved into the barren surface. Throughout the Nasca Valley, an area of nearly 1,000 sq. km (390 sq. miles), there are at least 10,000 lines and 300 different figures. Most are found alongside a 48 km (30-mile) stretch of the Pan-American Highway. Some of the biggest and best-known figures are about 21km (13 miles) north of Nasca. Most experts believe they were constructed by the Nasca (pre-Inca) culture between 300 B.C. and A.D. 700, although predecessor and successor cultures — the Paracas and Huari — might have also contributed to the desert canvas. The lines were discovered in the 1920s when commercial airlines began flights over the Peruvian desert. From the sky, they appeared to be some sort of primitive landing strips—Nazca Lines Tour 2 days

Our trip continues to Ballestas Islands very rich in sea fauna, we’ll explore the isles, passing through the big caves, natural formation rocks that are home for pelicans, Humbolt penguins, seals, dolphins, etc. We’ll then explore the National Reserve of Paracas, a natural sea area protected by the national government. Later on, we’ll leave to the city of Nazca which is famous for its gigantic design drawing on the desert which are dated from 2,000 years, and you can only see from the air. Upon our arrival hotel check-in. Lunch and dinner included.

DAY 2: Nazca Lines - Pisco Tasting - Lima

Early in the morning after breakfast, we’ll drive to the airport to take the flight upon the Nazca Lines. Upon our arrival at the airport, we will get a video informative about the Nazca Lines that way to familiarize with the lines and have a better idea of these archaeological remains that we’ll see from the air.

The type of airplane we’ll use for this excursion is a small airplane, with a capacity of 3 to 6 people, with seats to the window to see the figures properly, the flight is for about 30 – 45 minutes. During the flight, you will be able to see perfect representations of giants animals and birds; such as, condor, hummingbird, pelican, macaw, tarantula, monkey, whale, caiman, etc. Apart from these lines, you’ll also see many other huge geometric figures that reach whole the desert and look like a big landing strip. After enjoying the Nazca Lines, we’ll drive to the famous aqueducts of Cantalloc which were a system of underground aqueduct to supply of water the valleys that did not have water thus the peoples of Nazca Culture could defeat the long drought and the famine, we’ll then drive back to Lima, on the way we will stop for lunch. 6. The Best Fare For The Best Trip

7. you book, you go…don’t worry… we won’t cancel, 8. we are local entrepreneurs, a family enterprise (we are not a gringo company).

Probably you will see that most of the tour operators mention it on their websites that are local tour companies, however, if you research a little deeper you will find out that’s not true, they might be although half of the operation is done from here and another half abroad, they even have NorthAmerican phone number or European phone numbers, which is a clue to find out, we are not against the foreigner companies or half foreign companies, what we are against is that they lie.

9. Responsible Travel

Be a responsible traveller! Let’s make this world a better place for everyone and for everyone that lives in it!  The natural environments that we travel to are fragile and abundant with beautiful culture and traditions that are often reliant on tourism. We have a responsibility as travelers to minimize the impact of our presence, protect what is delicate, and leave a positive influence everywhere we can.

As a locally owned and based Peruvian tour company, we integrate these practices into our in-country operations we are aiming for a style of travel that makes the world a better place for everyone, and for everyone that lives in it. Since our very first days as a tour operator, responsible business has been at the heart of what we do. Peru Summit Adventures is committed not just to treading lightly, but to making a real difference by helping and investing in local communities, education initiatives, environmental conservation projects. These values are not more than just words, they are ingrained in the culture and philosophy of our crew, daily operations of Peru Summit Adventures trips, and at our office too.

Stunning images of the mysterious Nazca Lines in Peru

A gallery of images of the Nazca Lines in Peru.

An aerial view of the Nazca Lines

The Nazca Lines, a group of hundreds of mysterious geoglyphs etched into the desert in Peru, have mystified scientists for nearly a century. People from ancient civilizations made the drawings over a period of hundreds of years, beginning around 200 B.C. By analyzing the style and subject matter of the drawings and the methods used to make them, researchers at Yamagata University in Japan have proposed that the lines were made by two different cultures — the Nazca and their predecessors, the Paracas — and were intended to be seen on their respective pilgrimages to an ancient temple, not from the sky as they're more often seen today.

Even today, archaeologists are continuing to discover new Nazca Lines across Peru.

How to see the Nazca Lines

An aerial view of the Nazca Lines from an airplane.

The Nazca Lines were first brought to the world's attention in the 1920s, when airlines brought their passengers over the Nazca Pampa, an arid region of Peru locked between the Andes and the Pacific Ocean. They are best viewed from above.

How were the Nazca Lines made?

Aerial photo of Nazca lines in Peru. These geoglyphs contain a lot of straight and wiggly line patterns.

Ancient people made the mysterious lines, shapes and drawings by removing the white rocks on the surface of the desert, revealing the reddish earth underneath.

How big are the Nazca Lines?

Mysterious Nazca lines on desert in Peru, South America. There doesn't appear to be any kind of picture, just lots of straight lines here and there.

The geoglyphs span roughly 85 square miles (220 square kilometers) of the vast desert of Peru. The sizes of the drawings vary.

What was the purpose of the Nazca Lines?

Aerial photo of Nazca lines in Peru. These geoglyphs contain a lot of straight lines, geometric shapes, and trapezoids.

There's still no consensus on why the Nazca Lines were created. Some experts think the drawings were part of a calendar or an ancient irrigation system. Paul Kosok, the late American professor of history and government, once called the geoglyphs "the largest astronomy book in the world," according to Smithsonian Magazine .

It took archaeologists about one week to refurbish the ancient cat outline.

Discovered by archaeologists in 2020, the 121-foot-long (37 m) feline can be seen stretching along a hillside in southern Peru. The enormous drawing, which is reminiscent of a child's doodle , was found during conservation work on the severely eroded hillside. Based on the style of the drawing, with the cat's head facing the viewer, researchers estimate that it dates to sometime between 200 B.C. and 100 B.C. and was made by the Paracas. This ancient culture is well known for including cat depictions in ceramics and textiles.

There are several geoglyphs inspired by birds, including this condor, which, at 440 feet (134 m) long, is one of the largest works in the desert, according to Nazca Lines Tour .

Aerial photo of Nazca lines in Peru. These lines look like a monkey.

Peru's rainforests are teeming with monkeys, so it's no surprise that ancient artists looked to the local fauna for inspiration. However, Maria Reiche, a German archaeologist and astronomer who studied the Nazca Lines extensively, proposed that the coil-tailed mammal represented the constellation Ursa Major, also known as the "Great Bear," according to The Independent . Over time, experts concluded that the monkey was never used for studying the cosmos, but Reiche's proposal sparked new interest in the geoglyphs.

Not all of the lines depict animals. Some form wavy lines, trapezoids and spirals that resemble labyrinths. While labyrinths are often intended to be walked on as a form of meditation, some experts think this geoglyph, in particular, may have been intended as a portal for gods or spirits, Live Science previously reported.

Astronaut lookalike

Aerial photo of Nazca lines in Peru. This geoglyph look like a line drawing of an astronaut (humanoid).

This geoglyph, which depicts a kind of supernatural being, is one of the best known. It was rediscovered in the 1960s and can be found alongside a collection of other line drawings, including trophy heads and camelids, a group that includes llamas and camels.

Aerial photo of Nazca lines in Peru. This geoglyph looks like a line drawing of a spider.

Not all of the geoglyphs have direct meanings. Case in point: the spider. Some researchers think ancient people created this line drawing as a plea for rain, according to National Geographic .

Aerial photo of Nazca lines in Peru. This geoglyph looks like a line drawing of a dog.

This drawing depicts a dog with its mouth open and its tail sticking straight up as if on alert. Some researchers think the work depicts a Peruvian Inca Orchid (also known as the naked dog, since it lacks fur), a breed native to Peru.

Not a hummingbird

Aerial photo of Nazca lines in Peru. This geoglyph looks like a line drawing of a hermit bird (very similar to a hummingbird).

For years, archaeologists thought the birdlike figure rising from the dust was a hummingbird. However, newer research has determined that the long-beaked creature with outstretched wings was actually a hermit , a bird species that resides in the forests of northern and eastern Peru. These birds are not found in the southern desert where this drawing is located.

Aerial photo of Nazca lines in Peru. This geoglyph looks like a line drawing of a whale.

The well-defined flippers and fluke (tail) make it obvious that this drawing shows a whale. The Nazca were particularly enamored with these majestic creatures, often carving their likeness into pottery, according to the American Museum of Natural History .

Human hands

Aerial photo of Nazca lines in Peru. This geoglyph looks like a line drawing of a a pair of human hands.

While the vast majority of the Nazca Lines represent animals, a handful resemble human features, including these two hands; one has four fingers and a thumb, and the other lacks a fifth digit.

Aerial photo of Nazca lines in Peru. This geoglyph looks like a line drawing of a sunflower.

Despite being created thousands of years ago, the artfully depicted sunflower looks almost modern — at least by hippie standards.

The newly discovered Nazca Line is humanoid shaped. It has a rectangular head and appears to be wearing a headdress and carrying a stick. The three dots in the rectangular head probably depict a nose and eyes.

Researchers relied on artificial intelligence to find this humanoid figure, which measures 13.1 feet (4 m) long and 6.6 feet (2 m) wide. After scanning a collection of aerial and satellite images, this machine learning-based method helped point out possible geoglyphs that were otherwise hidden from the naked eye.

Two-headed snake

This horrific image is one of the lines discovered by Japanese researchers in 2019. It illustrates a voracious reptile that's about to devour a human figure.

By using AI, researchers discovered this pair of legs, which is more than 250 feet (77 meters) across.

The first Nasca geoglyphs were rediscovered by Peruvian aircraft pilots in the 1920s; now more than 350 have been found, including this one of a fish.

This Nazca geoglyph, discovered with AI, depicts a fish that is 62 feet (19 m) across.

Gagarin cup (khl) finals:  atlant moscow oblast vs. salavat yulaev ufa.

Much like the Elitserien Finals, we have a bit of an offense vs. defense match-up in this league Final.  While Ufa let their star top line of Alexander Radulov, Patrick Thoresen and Igor Grigorenko loose on the KHL's Western Conference, Mytischi played a more conservative style, relying on veterans such as former NHLers Jan Bulis, Oleg Petrov, and Jaroslav Obsut.  Just reaching the Finals is a testament to Atlant's disciplined style of play, as they had to knock off much more high profile teams from Yaroslavl and St. Petersburg to do so.  But while they did finish 8th in the league in points, they haven't seen the likes of Ufa, who finished 2nd.

This series will be a challenge for the underdog, because unlike some of the other KHL teams, Ufa's top players are generally younger and in their prime.  Only Proshkin amongst regular blueliners is over 30, with the work being shared by Kirill Koltsov (28), Andrei Kuteikin (26), Miroslav Blatak (28), Maxim Kondratiev (28) and Dmitri Kalinin (30).  Oleg Tverdovsky hasn't played a lot in the playoffs to date.  Up front, while led by a fairly young top line (24-27), Ufa does have a lot of veterans in support roles:  Vyacheslav Kozlov , Viktor Kozlov , Vladimir Antipov, Sergei Zinovyev and Petr Schastlivy are all over 30.  In fact, the names of all their forwards are familiar to international and NHL fans:  Robert Nilsson , Alexander Svitov, Oleg Saprykin and Jakub Klepis round out the group, all former NHL players.

For Atlant, their veteran roster, with only one of their top six D under the age of 30 (and no top forwards under 30, either), this might be their one shot at a championship.  The team has never won either a Russian Superleague title or the Gagarin Cup, and for players like former NHLer Oleg Petrov, this is probably the last shot at the KHL's top prize.  The team got three extra days rest by winning their Conference Final in six games, and they probably needed to use it.  Atlant does have younger regulars on their roster, but they generally only play a few shifts per game, if that.

The low event style of game for Atlant probably suits them well, but I don't know how they can manage to keep up against Ufa's speed, skill, and depth.  There is no advantage to be seen in goal, with Erik Ersberg and Konstantin Barulin posting almost identical numbers, and even in terms of recent playoff experience Ufa has them beat.  Luckily for Atlant, Ufa isn't that far away from the Moscow region, so travel shouldn't play a major role.

I'm predicting that Ufa, winners of the last Superleague title back in 2008, will become the second team to win the Gagarin Cup, and will prevail in five games.  They have a seriously well built team that would honestly compete in the NHL.  They represent the potential of the league, while Atlant represents closer to the reality, as a team full of players who played themselves out of the NHL.

  • Atlant @ Ufa, Friday Apr 8 (3:00 PM CET/10:00 PM EST)
  • Atlant @ Ufa, Sunday Apr 10 (1:00 PM CET/8:00 AM EST)
  • Ufa @ Atlant, Tuesday Apr 12 (5:30 PM CET/12:30 PM EST)
  • Ufa @ Atlant, Thursday Apr 14 (5:30 PM CET/12:30 PM EST)

Games 5-7 are as yet unscheduled, but every second day is the KHL standard, so expect Game 5 to be on Saturday, like an early start.

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

nzca lines tour

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

nzca lines tour

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

nzca lines tour

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

nzca lines tour

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

nzca lines tour

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

nzca lines tour

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
