The Blessings Within Blackmore’s Night

Speaking with Candice Night fuels us with an ethereal energy that cannot be matched.

Now imagine that energy on stage, alongside the magic of Ritchie Blackmore. A must-see experience, right?

There’s a romanticization of the Renaissance era that few have replicated like Blackmore’s Night; from their discography to their live presence to the way they carry themselves, this band encompasses the patient, thoughtful, mythical, and creative aura that comes with the middle ages. However, the musicality is far from antiquated. Ritchie Blackmore is on the top of his game, there’s a freedom to the art, and the harmonious soundscapes he and Candice Night shape (on stage and off) are locked in, tuneful, and succinct. It’s instrumentally ageless and quite stunning, making it surely worth chatting about… which is exactly we did.

The last time we spoke, Candice, we talked about how timeless the songs are in the world of Blackmore’s Night, and how the on-stage arrangements elevate that even more. How do you maintain that, both personally and alongside the band? Do you have any favorite moments with these songs, especially in a live setting and made even more robust?

I tend to just get lost in the music – literally allow it to transport me to another time and place. Sometimes when my eyes are closed onstage and I am channeling the spirit of the song wholeheartedly, I forget there are even other people in the room watching and listening. I am somewhere else, and the song is the avenue to that escape. I’m on the same wavelength as the audience listening to it, but I am the medium for it to come through, as well. So, because Ritchie and I are so in tune, we pay special attention to each other and allow the song to flow wherever it wants to go; allow it to guide us, not restrain it, so there is an incredible freedom and creativity. That’s why you won’t hear a song the same exact way twice when you see our shows multiple times. There have certainly been many magical moments in shows with the songs that we remember. We were singing “Hanging Tree” in a castle courtyard in Germany and right when the song ended, the clock tower began chiming eerily, or singing “Under A Violet Moon” and before the song, ended the full moon had made her appearance overhead as if she were a part of the stage show or simply listening to the music. Moments when I was singing “Cartouche” in Turkey and a whirling Dervish jumped on stage and began dancing and spinning to the song. [There was] a time in Nuremberg when they cut the power on us because we played too long over curfew, and the whole audience sang “Now and Then” so loud because my mic no longer worked – just the sound of the full audience who wouldn’t leave even though they were told the show was over and to go home – yet they climbed over the barriers to the stage across bushes planted between stage and audience, so they could grasp our hands and sing on the top of their voices. We have so many memorable moments. We have been so blessed.

The Aquarian has been covering Blackmore’s Night for quite some time and something always noted is the elegance. What’s it like to be on the stage, in the midst of the soundscape being shared to the audience? Is it as powerful as we can imagine, and how do all feel being served the artistry?

We love The Aquarian and always love reading your articles!  I remember years ago when we were in your area, we used to be able to go to a restaurant and pick up a copy at the door.  We always looked forward to getting a copy in our hands.  Thank you for your support.

It’s a very magical atmosphere. To be able to create your own world, your own musical landscape, and have others join you as you sing and play for them… not for them but with them it seems. We don’t feel as if there is a separation between the audience and ourselves, we feel lucky to be part of this whole journey with the fans who are right there with us who come on the path less traveled through the woods and join our world for the evening. Our musical community is so close and powerful. The music is the power and the love and positivity and bonding through it is intense. We so appreciate everyone who is traveling this musical escape through the veil of time alongside us.

You’re a Long Island native, Candice. Do shows in and around this NYC area feel extra special to you? What is that presumably warmth like upon return?

I am a Long Island native. Originally from Hauppauge and as an island girl, I have the ocean in my veins. It’s always wonderful playing home because you know so many of the people in the audience. It makes it hard to leave the stage after the show because you have so many people coming up and saying, “Hey, it’s your landscaper, your mailman, your kid’s teacher…” so you take the time to shake hands and talk to everyone. It’s like doing a show at your home at a party, but even on stage, I always feel so much love from the audience even if I haven’t seen them before, they feel like friends I just haven’t met yet. There is a great meeting of the minds and souls between our fans and ourselves. Still, playing at home usually means our kids will be there, family members, people who we have known closely for years, so it always just feels comfortable. One of the reasons we wrote “it’s good to be back,” on “Home Again,” is because I love to travel, but there’s nothing like coming back home.

In 2007 you told us about Ritchie and working with him, in the studio, on stage, and just as two artistic beings. You said, “He’s probably everything you heard and nothing you heard. He’s this mystery conundrum wrapped in enigma! He’s probably one of the most interesting people I’ve ever met.” At the time you had been alongside him for 18 years, and now here we all are, 17 years later, so how does that statement hold up?

He still has a pension for being predictably unpredictable. We are always changing, evolving and growing as humans, as partners, as a family, and as songwriters. When I originally said that, it was prior to marriage and kids. That is the hardest job and most challenging job you will ever love. Our dynamic has changed a bit because our lives have been expanded and enriched by our two children who are now 14 and 12, so it’s a whole new world for us, but we are a strong, connective partnership. We take it day by day as always and do our best in each situation.

What can be expected from this run of Blackmore’s Night performances? They’re always so Renaissance-y in theme and style, production and song, and you are also frequently on the road. How do you and the band keep things fresh, keep making each other and the fans happy with the shows being put on?

When COVID, hit, we never knew that our last show in a castle field in Abenberg, Germany was going to be our last for so long. That was 2019. It was incredible, a great show, great audience, and great memories. But then we stopped, as did the rest of the world, for years. We started doing a few shows in the USA during the last couple of years, just a handful of them, and have yet to get back overseas yet. (Still hoping to make that happen!) This time around we will do three weekends, the end of June and beginning of July, just where we can drive to that makes sense routing wise. Because we aren’t a band that goes on the road for a year or even a few months where we get road weary or lose our stamina or enthusiasm for playing. When we do play, it’s full of fresh energy and I think the audience can feel that. The band members are friends and we all really enjoy each other’s company and musicianship, and we act onstage as we do offstage. We love music; we have fun doing what we are doing and we don’t take it for granted. We invite the audience to be a part of our world and together we will make memories that will last a lifetime before we disappear into the night to travel to the next show. That wonderful after show glow will remain. Looking forward to making memories and singing with you all.

BLACKMORE'S NIGHT defines its music as renaissance folk rock. A unique and original genre of music inspired by the melodies and the tradition of the Renaissance period, " Blackmore -ized" into contemporary music. This is the sound of BLACKMORE'S NIGHT . And what a success it has been, since it all started...

Never intended to be a band thinking about charts and sales, it ended up being one of the most successful acoustic projects of all time, remaining a best-seller for over 25 years, while maintaining the purity of its original intention intact.

The band's last album, "Nature's Light" , brought the band back to the German Top 10 (No. 7) and it has reinforced the relationship with the fanbase all over the world.

In 1997, BLACKMORE'S NIGHT released their debut CD, "Shadow Of The Moon" , which immediately went gold in Japan and earned awards worldwide.

The album's reissue, released in 2023, re-entered the charts in Germany in the Top 20, thanks to a shiny new mix of the album, in a celebration of the music that started the journey for Candice and Ritchie . Meanwhile, their devoted fan base has been growing exponentially as the band continues performing their mystical music for all ages. From grandparents to children, everyone is enjoying their medieval mood music and gypsy dances. Clearly, the music of BLACKMORE'S NIGHT connects with fans on a deep level, allowing them to experience an entirely different era of merriment.

In the age of digital music, new fans discover BLACKMORE'S NIGHT every single day — making the band possibly the most streamed artist of its genre.

At the helm of this band, is award winning lyricist and vocalist, Candice Night , who not only contributes her unique, entrancing vocals, but deftly navigates seven medieval woodwinds, including chanters, shawms, pennywhistles and recorders. Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame inductee and celebrated DEEP PURPLE and RAINBOW guitarist Ritchie Blackmore who traverses between acoustic and electric guitar, mandolin, mandola, and hurdy gurdy.

Further enhancing the band's inspired sound are keyboardist/back-up vocalist Bard David ; violinist Scarlett Fiddler ; back-up vocalist/rhythm guitarist Lady Jessie ; bassist/rhythmic guitarist Earl Grey ; and percussionist Troubadour Of Aberdeen .

With lyrics penned by Night , the collective embraces the aura of the old-world inn, from madrigals and ballads to good old-fashioned renaissance-inspired pub songs.

Every BLACKMORE'S NIGHT studio CD has debuted in the top 2 of the Billboard New Age charts, many of which entered and remained at the No. 1 spot for weeks.

The media awards such as "Best Album of the Year" "Best Vocal performance of the Year" or "Best Guitar Performance" collected over the years are hard to keep count of.

Their sold-out concerts in castles and UNESCO sites worldwide are filled with thousands of fans dressed in renaissance garb, dancing and singing as if time stood still. No clocks...no pressure... just the gaiety and camaraderie of a medieval pub. Everyone joins in and loses their stress in the music.

2022 marked the official 25th anniversary of BLACKMORE'S NIGHT .

This year in 2024, they celebrate the 25th year of their third CD, "Fires At Midnight" . A 25th year edition of "Fires..." will be released by earMUSIC , as with the debut album, the music has been remixed from the original multi-track masters for a new sonic experience.

In addition, Candice has been working intensely on very personal and intense solo music, which will be pure joy for anybody who has loved BLACKMORE'S NIGHT .

Those unique troubadours The Wizard's Consort will be opening the musical evening of concerts with BLACKMORES NIGHT .

Last important note from Candice and Ritchie : "We feel very strongly at helping local no-kill animal shelters. So, wherever we play, we always invite a local animal shelter or animal rescue organization to set up a donation table at our concert. We are happy to announce that the following organizations will be present at our upcoming concerts to help raise funds for our less fortunate furry friends."

Details about the organizations for each concert, as well as ticket pre-sales are available here .

How Ritchie Blackmore Ended His First Tenure With Deep Purple

The balance of power within the world of heavy rock underwent a major shift on April 7, 1975, when guitarist Ritchie Blackmore ended his initial stint as a member of Deep Purple . Not that anyone — except maybe Blackmore himself — was fully aware of any of this on that night.

The members of Deep Purple's Mk. III lineup – Blackmore, singer David Coverdale , organist Jon Lord , bassist  Glenn Hughes  and drummer Ian Paice – were more preoccupied with maintaining their sanity at the end of yet another grueling album-tour cycle. This time, they were appearing in support of the previous year’s Stormbringer , which was lukewarmly received by fans.

The album had stirred the already-fragile emotions of the group, as new members Hughes and Coverdale began exerting their songwriting personalities, rubbing Blackmore the wrong way with their passion for American funk and soul music. Neither appealed to Deep Purple’s resident songwriter.

Petty musical differences were really just a catalyst behind the deeper wanderlust affecting Blackmore after nearly a decade and nine studio albums with the band. Feeling the need for, as he put it, “some fresh air,” Blackmore took advantage of a few days off during Deep Purple’s U.S. tour that fall to book some studio time in Los Angeles with singer Ronnie James Dio and his band Elf.

At first, Blackmore was planning to just record a solo version of “Black Sheep of the Family” by the British prog band Quatermass – a song which his Purple bandmates had rejected during the Stormbringer sessions — until things began to click. Dio also co-wrote the b-side, “Sixteenth Century Greensleeves,” and Blackmore started to have other ideas.

So, even before Deep Purple resumed their touring activities across Europe in March 1975, Blackmore had already whisked Dio and Elf members Gary Driscoll (drummer), Craig Gruber (bassist) and Mickey Lee Soule (keyboardist) into the Musicland Studios at Hamburg to record the debut album from a new group to be called Rainbow .

Still the rest of Deep Purple failed to grasp the seriousness of their guitarist's plan of escape while their touring machine trudged across continental Europe, mired in drug abuse, ego battles and sheer exhaustion. As the stage lights darkened and the audience dispersed from Paris’ Palais des Sports following Deep Purple’s performance on April 7, the chapter closed on Blackmore’s historic run at the helm of the legendary band. And with it, Rainbow’s birth could be formally announced.

Fortunately, Deep Purple's third-to-last concert with Blackmore had been captured for posterity, and later emerged as Graz '75 to give fans a belated glimpse into the Mk. III's mid-'70s European dates.

Unfortunately, the band faced a brief, troubled afterlife following Blackmore's exit. Deep Purple partnered with guitarist Tommy Bolin for the fan-polarizing Come Taste the Band LP, while Blackmore sped off toward nearly a decade of continued acclaim with Rainbow.

In 1984, he finally agreed to join his old band for the Mk. II lineup’s triumphant reunion on Perfect Strangers . And as always, it was done entirely on Blackmore’s terms.

About rainbow.

Rainbow (also known as Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow or Blackmore's Rainbow) are a British rock band led by guitarist Ritchie Blackmore, active from 1975 to 1984, from 1993 to 1997, and from 2015 to the present. They were originally established with Ronnie James Dio's American rock band Elf, but after their first album, Blackmore fired the backing members and continued with Dio until 1979. Three British musicians joined in 1979, singer Graham Bonnet, keyboardist Don Airey, former Deep Purple bassist Roger Glover, and this line-up gave the band their commercial breakthrough with the single "Since You Been Gone". Over the years Rainbow went through many line-up changes with no two studio albums featuring the same line-up. Other lead singers Joe Lynn Turner and Doogie White would follow, and the project consisted of numerous backing musicians. A pioneer to power metal, the band's early work primarily featured mystical lyrics with a neoclassical metal style, but went in a more streamlined, commercial direction following Dio's departure from the group. Rainbow were ranked No. 90 on VH1's 100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock. The band has sold over 28 million records worldwide.

Rainbow are a British hard rock band which was formed and led by guitarist Ritchie Blackmore (of Deep Purple) in 1975. The bands line up has been constantly changing ever since their formation however the band has still experienced significant success and is considered one of the greatest hard rock bands of all time. As a classic hard rock fan I was ecstatic to see Rainbow at one of their recent revival shows. An audience of mixed ages anticipated their arrival on stage; clearly including some long-time fans from the 70s and 80s alongside the younger crowd. The band (now compromised of Joe Lynn Turner, Bobby Rondinelli and Greg Smith) took the stage and went on to perform an eclectic mix of songs from Rainbow’s discography, including ‘Man on the Silver Mountain’, ‘Since You Been Gone’, ‘Temple of the King’, ‘Long Live Rock N Roll’, ‘Tarot Woman’ and ‘Still I’m Sad’. Perhaps it would have been expected that after so many years the band’s finesse (especially performing live) would have diminished, but this was not the case. The set was full of the Rainbow’s characteristic heavy guitars, aggressive vocals and distorted psychedelic rock riffs - with an impressive technicality for an older band. The crowd were thrilled with the extensive back catalogue set and took on the energy of the music in the standing area; emulating the atmosphere of concerts during the hard rock era of the 60s and 70s. Towards the end of the set Rainbow played some improvised material with classic guitar riffs, melodramatic vocals and cascading strings totally filling the venue. I left somewhat entranced by the music. It was a brilliant gig.

Totally immersive rock is what to expect from watching Rainbow perform. The three or so minutes of their chart topper ‘I surrender’ have never gone past so quickly. With strong drum beats and the lead singer, Graham Bonnet, combining the right mix of wailing and tuneful crooning it made for a completely absorbing performance and is a highly recommendable introduction for beginning your love affair with Rainbow.

Rainbow is a band that is defined through their music and not so much through their members as, since their formation in 1975, they have had multiple line-up changes. For example, lead vocalists include Ronnie James Dio (1975-1979), Graham Bonnet and Doogie White (1994-1997). However, Ritchie Blackmore (guitarist) led the band through their changes and kept the tone and style of the music going. Unfortunately for us, 1997 was the last time that you could catch this band playing live but a tonne of their live performances and gigs are available to watch on YouTube.

Accolades achieved include their ranking of number 90 on VH1’s 100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock and after watching the performance of their 1979 hit ‘Since you been gone’ this number seems woefully low. So get online and immerse yourself in the past concerts of the late 70s and watch the crazy, authentic rock of Rainbow. You will be transported back to an era when rock was thriving and Rainbow were doing everything they could to keep it that way!

Music and concerts | thousands remain without power in lehigh valley on friday after storm, music and concerts | a modern renaissance: blackmore’s night brings medieval melodies to lehigh valley.

Blackmore's Night (Courtesy Blackmore's Night)

The group features vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Candice Night as well as legendary guitarist and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Ritchie Blackmore (Deep Purple, Rainbow). But don’t expect to hear screaming vocals or high-volume distorted electric guitar from this eclectic duo and their band. Instead, Blackmore’s Night live show is a passport to a time gone by; complete with merry camaraderie, medieval instruments like the hurdy-gurdy, shawms, and pennywhistles as well as renaissance garb.

The group is out on six-city tour, which includes a stop at The Sherman Theater in Stroudsburg at 8 p.m. Saturday.

I recently spoke with Candice Night about the band’s upcoming performance and more in this new interview.

It’s been nearly 30 years since you and Ritchie formed Blackmore’s Night. What inspired the project?

Candice Night: I had never heard of Renaissance music before I met Ritchie, yet I was always inspired by having one foot in a magical world, a world of fantasy. When I met him, he brought me to his dark English Tudor house in the woods of Connecticut with nothing but trees around for miles. He had a minstrels gallery; everything was very low lit with lots of tapestries on the walls and a huge fireplace. He would play nothing but purist Renaissance music on the sound system. And it was there, looking out the window as the snow fell and watching deer eat the grass off the front garden while this music played that it became the soundtrack to nature in my mind. It completed the picture — the perfect marriage of visual and audio.

Most know Ritchie as being the driving force behind bands like Deep Purple and Rainbow. Blackmore’s Night is certainly a big departure from that. How would you describe your sound?

I don’t know if I can do that justice. We’ve coined a few phrases like “Renaissance Folk Rock” or “Castle Rock” but it’s so much more than that. As with any art, you can’t put creativity in a box and label it. We just play melodic music that we enjoy. Music that takes you on an emotional journey. We do some songs based on the 12th-15th century and update them with new lyrical content and arrangements and instrumentation. We also do “tavern” — like everyone grab your beer mug and swing it, fun music where everyone sings along; cover songs; ballads and instrumentals. There’s even a few songs from Ritchie’s past bands. We change our setlist nightly and take requests from the audience. There’s something for everyone. If you like melodic music you’ll enjoy our band.

In your opinion what makes Renaissance music so timeless and special?

The strong melody line. We tend not to get involved with quieter lute music from those times, but more of the songs that can translate to being played on today’s instruments. We play some shawms and hurdy gurdies as well as the guitars, keyboards, bass and drums in our 7-piece band, but the songs come across more like something you might hear today due to our interpretation.

What can fans expect from your upcoming performance at the Sherman Theater?

It’s a family show so there will be people from all ages and all walks of life. We say our fans are independent thinkers looking for something different to enjoy and taking the path less traveled. Yet there are men who have followed Ritchie’s musical career for decades knowing that his name is synonymous with guitar brilliance. A lot of women come for the female singer aspect or lyrical storyteller part. Children enjoy the fact they can dress up like Robin Hood or fairies or queens and sing along to catchy choruses in some of the songs and dance along and older people enjoy the fact that the music is melodic. Our set lists change nightly and many fans dress up in garb to feel as if they are part of the show. It’s like a costume party coming to your town.

Your most recent album is 2021’s “Nature’s Light.” What can you tell me about it?

Our tough year was 2018. I lost my dad to cancer, Ritchie lost his brother to COPD, our cat of nineteen years died the day after we returned from tour and Ritchie’s closest friend from a band passed after a stroke. We were going through such emotional grief and upheaval. Then after we finished the album COVID hit. We couldn’t be around people at that time, yet we noticed so many singular people keeping distance by walking through the woods and along beaches. Getting back to the beauty that was in front of them all the time and healing their souls. We felt the world needed and was healing from “Natures Light.” The CD actually helped heal us from our personal pain in 2018 and for the rest of the fans around the world through COVID times.

It would be remiss of me to not ask about the Deep Purple song “Smoke on The Water,” which is probably the first song any new guitarist learns how to play. What was Ritchie’s inspiration for that riff and did he know how influential it was going to become to generations of future guitar players?

No he didn’t but as he says, “It pays the bills!” so no complaints there [laughs]. He has mentioned to me that at the time he wrote “Smoke on The Water” he was writing pretty complicated songs and then he listened to what was popular: The Kinks “You Really Got Me” or the [Rolling] Stones “Satisfaction” and listening to those riffs he realized that he needed to write something simple or something the postman could whistle. And man, did he ever! When he says he’s going to do something, he really commits to it!

A character from "Blackmore's Night": Ritchie Blackmore (Music, Entertainer, Alone)

Are there any new projects you’re currently working on?

We have a new Blackmore’s Night CD in the works and will finish that up later this year. Our third album, Fires At Midnight, has now been remixed and remastered with some songs having new parts added and will be released in the coming months. I also have my third solo CD coming out and we’re doing six tour dates this summer and probably more in the fall.

Is there a message you have for the fans of the area prior to your appearance at the Sherman Theater?

Just that we are so pleased to be coming back to see you all! We always have a great time at The Sherman Theater and we will make it a night to remember. “So raise your hats and your glasses too, and we will see you under a violet moon!” Normally the fans dressed in garb have special seating in the front rows, so come be a part of our world. See you then!
