From romantic Paris, we slip our moorings and commence our wonderfully scenic cruise along the beautiful and majestic Seine into the heart of one of France's most historic and picturesque regions, Normandy. With time to enjoy the historic little town of Les Andelys en route, we continue our journey along the Seine’s sweeping meanders, before exploring the delights of Rouen, one of Europe’s finest medieval cities with its stunning cathedral and tangle of atmospheric winding streets.

Passing the legendary Jumiege Abbey, we moor in the pretty village of Caudebec with time after dinner for an evening stroll in this most typical of French villages. Then to Bayeux, spared significant war damage, it retains its wealth of splendid buildings as well as the legendary and stunning tapestry for which it is so famed. We also see some of the many thought-provoking monuments and places along the Normandy coast and reflect on the remarkable story of the D-Day landings on our visit to Gold Beach and the remnants of Mulberry Harbour. Our cruise would not be complete without a visit to charming Honfleur - its near perfect waterfront of tall pastel-coloured  18th century houses, traditional shops and maze of streets providing the inspiration for the Impressionist painter Claude Monet to paint here many times.

Countless sleepy villages silently drift by as we arrive in delightful Vernon, from where we take the short drive to Giverny visiting Claude Monet’s home and one of the world’s most famous and most painted gardens. Enjoy the quintessentially half-timbered streets of Vernon before we continue on to our final destination, one of the world’s most iconic and romantic cities, Paris. From the Notre Dame to the Arc de Triomphe, the Sacre-Coeur to the Eiffel Tour, the Louvre to the Pompidou Centre, the smart shopping of the Galeries Lafayette to bohemian Montmatre, the list is endless and the variety arguably unmatchable; this breathtaking city never fails to inspire no matter how many times you get the chance to visit.

Embark in Paris

On arrival, transfer by coach to your cruise ship moored on the River Seine in the heart of the city. The friendly crew will welcome you on board, helping you settle into your spacious and exquisitely furnished accommodation – you’ll immediately feel at home.

This evening you enjoy your first sumptuous dinner, served in the ship’s restaurant.

Route Map

Les Andelys

During the night our ship slips her mooring and, as you enjoy breakfast, the landscape passes by serenely and you quickly get used to this luxurious sightseeing experience. Rounding a sweeping bend so typical of the Seine, we reach the town of Mantes-la-Jolie with its imposing church – so large and architecturally impressive it could be a cathedral – while straight ahead is a medieval stone bridge. The central section of the bridge was destroyed during the Second World War and never repaired – it’s the first of many poignant reminders that this region of France has been a battleground for centuries.

Beyond Mantes we encounter another typical feature of the Seine as it flows seaward – picturesque chalk cliffs, almost resembling a giant’s teeth. Beautiful villages like La Roche Guyon slide by, surrounded by bocage countryside of lush pastures and high hedgerows, countless cider orchards, half-timbered barns and ancient wooden farmhouses. We’re truly in the heart of one of France’s historic and stunningly attractive dukedoms – Normandy.

While you’re enjoying your first delicious lunch, the captain has skilfully berthed at Les Andelys, a small town dominated by one of the most spectacular sights along the entire valley – Château Gaillard. This afternoon we discover the story behind this remarkable castle. The remarkable Château Gaillard guards the apex of the river bend and was built by Richard the Lionheart in the 12th-century to defend Rouen from the French.

Besieged many times during the turbulent history of northern France, Château Gaillard is now one of the most dramatic ruins in the region.

Included experience:

Visit to Les Andelys and Château Gaillard.

Les Andelys, France

We awake in Rouen, Normandy’s capital, one of Europe’s finest medieval cities and scene of many momentous events over the centuries. Pride of place on our guided tour of the city belongs to its stunning Gothic cathedral, which was immortalised by the great Impressionist Claude Monet in a series of 28 paintings showing the facade at varying times of day and in different weather conditions. Briefly becoming the world’s tallest building when the soaring spire was added in the 19th century, the cathedral is also notable for the recumbent statue reputedly containing the heart of Richard the Lionheart.

Rouen’s beautifully tangled alleyways are a revelation, lined with antique shops, tasteful boutiques and, of course, countless restaurants serving exceptional local cuisine emphasising the country’s outstanding gastronomic heritage. The Place du Vieux-Marché is one of the city’s most poignant spots; a large cross marks the point where the ‘Maid of Orléans’ Joan of Arc was burned at the stake for her beliefs.

Cruise towards Caudebec-en-Caux

During another superb lunch we cast off to navigate through yet more twists and turns, chalk cliffs and a landscape of forest-covered hills that are designated as areas of outstanding natural beauty and sanctuaries for diverse wildlife, including deer and wild boar. Another highlight of the valley soon greets us – the ethereal ruins of Jumièges Abbey. Founded in the 7th century, it was consecrated in the presence of William the Conqueror and was an important political and religious centre until it was sacked in the 16th century.

Should you wish, why not arrange to visit the wheelhouse, the Captain is always delighted to explain to those interested how the highly sophisticated navigation and safety systems operate. In the late afternoon, we moor in the pretty town of Caudebec-en-Caux.

After dinner, enjoy the laid-back tones of a guitarist singing traditional French melodies.

Guided tour of Rouen, visit to Caudebec-en-Caux & French guitarist performance.

Rouen Cathedral

Bayeux & Arromanches

After breakfast you’ll be ready for a full-day tour exploring two of the most important aspects of European history – the Bayeux Tapestry and the D-Day landings. (Please note lunch is not provided today.)

Bayeux itself is a delightful town with a historic core that escaped the ravages of war, so you can marvel at its many splendid buildings including the grand Gothic cathedral. But, of course, Bayeux is most famous as the home of the tapestry telling the story of the Norman invasion of Britain in 1066 in glorious detail. Among its 75 scenes are the coronation of Harold following the death of Edward the Confessor and his subsequent demise at the Battle of Hastings, which led to William of Normandy invading England and becoming king.

The 230-foot-long tapestry is made up of nine panels of extremely delicate embroidery – gazing at its wonderful depictions of the battle and the period’s architecture, weapons and everyday life, you’ll appreciate why the Bayeux Tapestry is arguably the finest relic of the Middle Ages.

Arromanches

This afternoon we drive to Arromanches, where you will have free time for lunch. Then enjoy a visit to a museum dedicated to the ‘longest day’ where you can still see remnants of the two Mulberry harbours constructed for the landing craft.

Leaving Arromanches, we continue to the British Normandy Memorial – unveiled in 2021, the 77th anniversary of the D-Day landings. From here you have best point of view to Gold Beach, one of the five main landing sites on D-Day, when Allied forces surged into Normandy to begin the liberation of occupied Europe. Casting your eyes across the sand to the water’s edge, it’s sobering to consider that on 6 June 1944 around 25,000 British troops came ashore on this one beach with 400 killed by the defenders. We will then drive back to the ship moored in Caudebec.

After a day recalling such momentous events and the stories surrounding them, thoughts turn again to the culinary delights awaiting you in the refined comfort of the ship’s restaurant.

Visit to the Bayeux Tapestry & the D-Day Normandy Beaches.

Bayeux Tapestry

Honfleur is often regarded as the most picturesque spot on the northern French coast, and after breakfast we make the short journey to this delightful town and enjoy a guided tour. Its old harbour, sheltering both fishing boats and luxurious pleasure craft, is beautifully preserved and surrounded by a perfect waterfront of pastel-coloured 16th- to 18th-century houses, many converted to seafood restaurants.

Watch the talented artists capturing the captivating views along the waterfront, while the intricate maze of streets behind is also well worth discovering. The eaves of the tall half-timbered buildings almost touch, and on the streets below is an abundance of traditional shops selling antiques, books and fine foods. Honfleur’s most famous son is Eugene Boudin, one of the forerunners of Impressionism and a friend of Claude Monet, who also painted the harbour many times.

Cruise towards Vernon

After returning to the ship for lunch, we slip our mooring and begin our passage back upstream, retracing the river’s winding course, its huge variety of wildlife, enchanting scenery and forests, all reflected in differing colours in the sparkling waters. Villages slip by, birds glide on thermals rising from the surrounding cliffs, it’s an ideal opportunity to join new friends for a chat. Squeeze in a spot of reading on the Sun Deck or simply recline, letting the gentle breezes lull you into a relaxing doze.

By this stage of your cruise, you’ll be totally unwound, and modern life will seem very distant.

Guided tour of Honfleur.

Honfleur

Giverny & Vernon

Claude Monet's house & garden in Giverny

One of the great delights of river cruising is the magical sensation of waking up in a different place from where you were the night before. This morning the ship has moored in delightful Vernon, and we take the short drive to Giverny to visit Monet’s garden and house.

The artist himself called his garden his ‘most beautiful masterpiece’, and it’s certainly one of the world’s most photographed and painted, ideally viewed in the delicate morning light. In the Japanese-inspired water garden, shaded by great weeping willows and surrounded by bamboo, rhododendrons and azaleas, is the lily pond where he painted his extraordinary Les Nymphéas (Water Lilies) series. There’s ample time to wander here, absorbing the tranquil atmosphere while marvelling at the light bouncing off foliage of every hue and the magical reflections dancing off the water.

After another leisurely lunch on board, you can explore Vernon’s quaint buildings before embarking on our cruise to Paris. As the sun sets on the shimmering Seine and the Norman countryside recedes into dusk, it’s a perfect time to reflect on your few days cruising among the creamy chalk cliffs and charming villages of this splendid river.

Visits to Claude Monet's house and garden & Vernon.

Vernon

We have arrived in Paris and this morning we take a sightseeing tour of this amazing capital, one of the world’s most iconic cities. We'll see many of the outstanding monuments Paris has to offer - including the Arc de Triomphe, Notre Dame Cathedral, the Eiffel Tower, the Trocadéro, the Musee D'Orsay and much more before returning to the ship for lunch. You are also welcome to stay in the city and frequent one of the city's many cosy cafés.

After lunch, your afternoon is free to enjoy Paris and the many attractions of this amazing city. We are moored close to a well-connected RER station which allows easy access for you to tick a few items off your bucket list. You could see the grand Place de la Concorde, the largest square in the city, which shows off 18th-century French architecture at its best, visit Galleries Lafayette - the historic high-end department store - or the Musée d’Orsay, home of the world’s finest Impressionist art collection.

Alternatively, you may wish to simply stroll along the Champs Elysees, enjoy a walk in the Tuileries Gardens or perhaps wander through the café lined streets of the city.

Paris is everything you imagine it to be – romantic, inspiring, vibrant – even outrageous – but best of all Paris is unique, and a fitting finale to a wonderful cruise.

After dinner tonight, there's the chance to enjoy more famous French melodies and songs performed by a professional accordionist.

Guided tour of Paris & accordionist performance.

What the Trip is Like

This cruise is rated Level 1, Easiest , and is appropriate for anyone in good health who is physically active. Daily shore excursions require a moderate amount of walking, often along uneven cobblestone streets and up and down stairs. To better accommodate guests and their individual fitness levels, AMA Waterways programs provide several levels of walking tours whenever possible: "Gentle Walkers" are designed for slower walkers to enjoy the tour in a relaxed manner, "Active Walkers" enjoy the tours at a normal pace, and there is also a "Late Starters" group offered to guests who prefer to sleep in.

Staterooms range from 160-350 square feet (depending on category), and typical hotel room amenities include hair dryer, bathrobe, television, and mini-safe. Every stateroom has individually controlled air conditioning, internet access, Wi-Fi (free throughout the ship!) and a movie-on-demand system that offers a variety of English language channels, films and music options. Most staterooms have balconies, either walk-on or French, but lower categories just have fixed windows or portholes.

AMA is known for its efforts to bring in regional cuisine, which is always fun as you explore new countries and cultures. Breakfast and lunch are served buffet-style with made-to-order specialties. Dinner is multi-course. Every lunch and dinner includes free-flowing regional wines as well as complimentary beer and soft drinks. Bottled water, specialty teas, and coffees are always available free of charge. All ships have an open seating policy in the main restaurant to encourage you to meet your fellow travelers.

On Board AMA Riverboats

AMA Waterways specializes in high-end river journeys that navigate some of Europe's most famous waterways. Their ships accommodate approximately 150 passengers in comfortable staterooms, all with scenic views. While this might sound like a lot of travelers compared to Wilderness Travel's traditional small group trips, it's a modest number of passengers in the cruise ship world and there are a number of comfortable lounges, dining rooms, bars, and sitting areas on board for you to find a perfect spot to socialize or quietly relax, depending on your mood.

There is a warm and welcoming feel to all AMA cruises. From the moment you step onboard, you will be welcomed by crew, staff, and leaders who are friendly, professional and English speaking. There is a high staff to guest ratio (1:3) that assures a feeling of being well-taken-care-of at all times. Your fellow passengers will come from a variety of English-speaking countries and guests tend to mingle freely. No need to bring fancy clothes as the atmosphere onboard is casual, although guests do tend to dress up for the Captain's dinner.

Daily shore excursions are included in the cost of the cruise, along with free time to explore on your own. Each tour is led by a qualified, local guide. At many stops, you'll be free to choose from one of several options. Complimentary headset systems ensure that you hear every word of your tour. AMA ships carry more than two dozen bicycles and helmets, free of charge, for your use should you want to venture into the countryside.

There is a reception desk onboard that is open 24 hours a day with somebody available to help you, should you need it. All announcements and lectures will be presented in English as the clientele is mainly North American, Australian, and European. All AMA cruises prohibit smoking inside their ships. Smoking is only permitted outside on the sun deck.

Electricity on board all ships is 220v, with 2-pin power outlets. You will need an adapter, and/or converter depending on which electrical appliances you bring with you. There are no medical facilities on board although if medical services are needed, they can easily be called from shore. Laundry services are available for a fee.

All ships are equipped with either a whirlpool or a small, heated swimming pool. If you think you might want to use this, be sure to pack a swimsuit!

Tips are not included in the price of the cruise, and are entirely at your discretion. The recommended rate suggested is 3 Euros per passenger per day to the Cruise Manager and 12 Euros per passenger per day to the crew, which will be divided up and distributed. You can use your credit card for this expense. It is also customary to acknowledge a particularly good performance of a local guide by leaving a tip of 1-2 Euros per tour.

Wilderness Travel enjoys partnering with AMA Waterways because they offer a high quality product with thoughtfully planned itineraries, allowing travelers to experience Europe's most glorious architecture, medieval castles, historic villages, and idyllic countryside with minimal effort. Since these trips are relatively short, you may consider this as part of a longer, European adventure!

Trip Levels

With more than 200 different adventures to choose from, we want to help you find the trip that’s right for you. A plus (+) sign means the trip is a bit more strenuous than other trips of that level. The detailed explanation of each trip—below the bar with the number rating—is perhaps more important, specifying activities, altitudes, hiking, and travel conditions. The Detailed Itinerary, available by download or mail, gives further information. Our Area Managers can also answer questions and guide you to the trip that best suits your interests.

Arrival in Paris On arrival, transfer by coach to your cruise ship moored on the River Seine in the heart of the city. The friendly crew will welcome you on board, helping you settle into your spacious and exquisitely furnished accommodation – you’ll immediately feel at home. This evening you enjoy your first sumptuous dinner, served in the ship’s restaurant.

Les Andelys During the night our ship slips her mooring and, as you enjoy breakfast, the landscape passes by serenely and you quickly get used to this luxurious sightseeing experience. Included experience: Visit to Les Andelys and Château Gaillard.

Rouen We awake in Rouen, Normandy’s capital, one of Europe’s finest medieval cities and scene of many momentous events over the centuries. Cruise towards Caudebec-en-Caux During another superb lunch we cast off to navigate through yet more twists and turns, chalk cliffs and a landscape of forest-covered hills that are designated as areas of outstanding natural beauty and sanctuaries for diverse wildlife, including deer and wild boar. Included experience: Guided tour of Rouen, visit to Caudebec-en-Caux & French guitarist performance.

Bayeux After breakfast you’ll be ready for a full-day tour exploring two of the most important aspects of European history – the Bayeux Tapestry and the D-Day landings. (Please note lunch is not provided today.) Bayeux itself is a delightful town with a historic core that escaped the ravages of war, so you can marvel at its many splendid buildings including the grand Gothic cathedral. Arromanches This afternoon we drive to Arromanches, where you will have free time for lunch. Included experience: Visit to the Bayeux Tapestry & the D-Day Normandy Beaches.

Honfleur Honfleur is often regarded as the most picturesque spot on the northern French coast, and after breakfast we make the short journey to this delightful town and enjoy a guided tour. Cruise towards Vernon After returning to the ship for lunch, we slip our mooring and begin our passage back upstream, retracing the river’s winding course, its huge variety of wildlife, enchanting scenery and forests, all reflected in differing colours in the sparkling waters. Included experience: Guided tour of Honfleur.

Claude Monet's house & garden in Giverny One of the great delights of river cruising is the magical sensation of waking up in a different place from where you were the night before. Vernon After another leisurely lunch on board, you can explore Vernon’s quaint buildings before embarking on our cruise to Paris. As the sun sets on the shimmering Seine and the Norman countryside recedes into dusk, it’s a perfect time to reflect on your few days cruising among the creamy chalk cliffs and charming villages of this splendid river. Included experience: Visits to Claude Monet's house and garden & Vernon.

Paris We have arrived in Paris and this morning we take a sightseeing tour of this amazing capital, one of the world’s most iconic cities. Included experience: Guided tour of Paris & accordionist performance.

Return home It’s time to say goodbye to your crew and start the journey home.

Rouen destination cruises

Historical capital of Normandy, the medieval city of Rouen constitutes the closest port to the city of Paris, located 135 km away. The Rouen Port Authority ( HAROPA ) includes the city of Rouen, the entire Seine Valley as well as Honfleur, thus facilitating the organization and billing of calls: the ship stays in the same area and is only billed once.

The Port of Rouen’s cruise terminal can accommodate ships up to 250 meters long on two berths, open 24 hours a day. Many itineraries offer overnight stops to give passengers more time on site to enjoy all the riches of the city of Rouen and take advantage of unforgettable excursions in Normandy and beyond, such as visits to Giverny, Paris and Versailles.

Travel to Rouen on an A-ROSA River Cruise

With some 2,000 half-timbered houses and magnificent Gothic churches, Rouen – the capital of Normandy – is a must-see on any visit to northern France.

Thanks to its rich architectural heritage, with glorious buildings of worship, splendid palaces and handsome town houses of different styles, Rouen is sometimes referred to as The Museum City. Although the capital of the former Upper Normandy region is around 120 kilometres from the coast via the Seine – or 65 kilometres by road – it has France’s fifth-largest sea port. Every year, more than 3,500 ships chug up the river and back to the sea, since Rouen is an important trans-shipment port for Paris. The effects of the tides are clearly noticeable, even this far up the river.

NOTRE DAME DE L'ASSOMPTION

The focal point of the old town is Rouen Cathedral (12th–16th century). It impresses with its huge, well-preserved facade in flamboyant-style, which is flanked by the Tour de Saint-Romain and Tour de Beurre (16th century). The latter, which means ‘butter tower’, was financed by a tax levied on dairy products. The crossing tower, which is just as imposing at 151 metres high, is France’s tallest church tower. There are 56 bells distributed across the cathedral towers. In the choir, you’ll find several tombs, including those of Rollo, who was the first Duke of Normandy (10th century), and Richard the Lionheart.

GROS HORLOGE Flussreisen nach Rouen

GROS HORLOGE

In the busy Rue du Gros-Horloge, you’ll find the 16th-century Gros Horloge (Great Clock) built into a Renaissance archway. On each side, you can see an ornately designed clock face – which still works accurately today – as well as an opening showing the days of the week. You can view the clock’s mechanism inside the building. The phases of the moon are also visible and were vital for assessing whether tall ships due to land in Rouen would be able to sail into the harbour or not – they have a decisive influence on the tides and thus on the water level under the keel.

Vieux Rouen Auf der Seine nach Rouen

The old town of Rouen enchants visitors with its countless half-timbered houses, which make a very imposing impression. Enjoy a stroll through the cobbled streets and be amazed by the history of the city. Discover the old town of Rouen, which is also known as the "city of 100 church towers".

Paris to rouen day trip: how to get there and what to do (map included).

  • Post published: 8 October 2017
  • Post category: Europe / France / Normandy / Paris and suburbs

Rouen is a lovely town with great architecture and history, just 1.5 hours away from Paris. Although it has the potential to be a major tourist destination, you won’t find too many visitors in Rouen. Maybe it’s because it’s impossible to pronounce its name if you’re not French. A Paris to Rouen day trip is easy to organise and a great way to experience a picturesque Normandy town.

Rouen Cathedral

Is Rouen worth visiting?

Whenever I am asked the question “Is Rouen worth visiting?”, I say a bit YES! It’s one of the best and easiest day trips you can find from Paris. Whether you spend a few days in Paris and want to explore somewhere different, or you live in Paris and you’re looking for a short break , a day trip to Rouen is a great option. Rouen was built in the twists of the Seine River and was a prominent place during Roman and Medieval times. You can feel History wandering in the old cobbled pedestrian roads in the heart of the city. You pass old medieval Norman-style houses and many imposing buildings from different eras.

I lived there intermittently for about three years when I was a student. The first time I wandered around the unique town centre, I was charmed in a few minutes. Family and friends sometimes came for short visits, and I loved showing them the place.

How to plan your Paris to Rouen day trip

I only have great news about planning a Paris to Rouen day trip: you actually don’t need much planning. The tips and itinerary below may even be enough.

Rouen is the capital of Normandy, located 130 km north of Paris. It takes less than two hours to drive there from Paris and 1.5hrs on average by train.

Don’t want to drive or catch the train? You can also join a tour from Paris (click here for more information*) .

Paris to Rouen by train

Rouen is one of the best day trips from Paris by train . It’s great to visit Rouen on foot, so it’s very convenient to catch a train from Paris Saint Lazare directly to the centre of Rouen (Rouen Rive Droite). You won’t get tired from driving and won’t have to worry about parking your car.

You don’t need to book in advance, and it has always been under 25€ return for me (and more often around 20€). However, you may find better deals when you book online , and you’ll have access to express trains (Train Nomad) that will take you to Rouen in only 1h15. It’s also often quicker to purchase tickets online rather than at the train station.

The first train usually leaves Paris Saint Lazare at 5h46, and the last train from Rouen to Paris Saint Lazare is usually at 21h01. So you’ll be able to spend a full long day in Rouen. You can view the train timetables on the SNCF website .

Saint Lazare station is the second busiest train station in Paris. Trains to go to Rouen leave from Level 1 (Niveau 1). There are 27 platforms, so make sure you’re there in advance to have time to find yours.

Paris to Rouen by car

If you come by car, I recommend finding a spot to park your car for the day and walk. Driving in Rouen isn’t easy. There are many narrow and one-way streets. It’s often much quicker to walk from one point to another. And it’s also the best way to see all the stunning buildings in the old town.

Responsible travel tip : Travelling by train has a lower impact on the environment than driving.

How do you spend a day in Rouen?

Here’s a one-day itinerary with my favourite things to do in Rouen for a day trip. The number refers to the order of the visit as you walk in Rouen and find these places rather than an order of preference. There’s a map at the end of the article with a suggested itinerary for your day in Rouen.

1. Start at the beautiful Rouen train station

If you took a train from Paris to Rouen, take a few minutes to have a look at the station and its belfry when you get out.

2. Check out the Joan of Arc Tower (Tour Jeanne d’Arc)

The Tour Jeanne d’Arc is the only part left of the Castle of Rouen, built in the early 13th century. If you have time, speak French and want to experience history, they organise escape games in the tower  late in the afternoon. I haven’t tried it, but I like the idea!

Rouen - Tour Jeanne d'Arc

3. Visit the Beaux-Arts Museum

The Beaux-Arts Museum is free and is France’s second-biggest impressionist art gallery! It opens at 10 am, so it can be hard to fit in a short-day itinerary. If you don’t have time to go in, it’s still a nice building to see from the outside.

Rouen - Musee des Beaux Arts 01

4. Palais de Justice

The Palais de Justice  is a fascinating building. I’ve walked past this masterpiece hundreds of times, and I could always spot a new detail on the Gargoyles.

Rouen - Palais de Justice

5. Go to where Joan of Arc was executed: Place du Vieux Marché

Place du Vieux Marché is full of history. It’s the place where the French heroine Joan of Arc was burned at the stake in 1431 when Rouen was under the English rule. The new church has interesting modern architecture that contrasts a lot with the old monuments in Rouen. There are many squares in this area to enjoy drinks on a terrace. Place de la Pucelle was my favourite at the time.

Rouen - Place du Vieux

6. Admire the fascinating clock (Gros Horloge)

The Gros Horloge is an iconic monument that goes over a busy, paved pedestrian street with half-timbered houses between Place du Vieux Marché and the Cathedral. You can visit it for the single experience of being inside a clock, and the fantastic views of the roofs and the Cathedral. It is one of the oldest working clocks in Europe: the Renaissance arch is from the 16th century, but the mechanism is from the 14th century.

Rouen - Gros Horloge close up

7. Notre Dame Cathedral

As you go down Gros Horloge Street, you cannot miss the majestic Cathedral of Notre Dame . During summer (June to September), there’s a light show on the Cathedral at night (check timetables here ) that you don’t want to miss if you chose to spend one night in the town. There was already a church there in the 4th century. It says a lot about the great past of Rouen. This Cathedral has been destroyed and rebuilt many times, so there is an interesting mix of styles there. I first saw the cathedral in Monet’s famous series of paintings . It is also famous for having the highest spire in France (151 m).

Rouen Cathedral

8. Saint Maclou church and Rue Eau de Robec

Then, you can wander towards St Maclou church and get lost in the small streets around. There are many restaurants for lunch. I recommend stopping at the lovely  Rue Eau de Robec .

Rouen - Proche Eglise St Maclou

9. Gardens and Abbatiale St Ouen

If you finish your lunch before 2 pm, take a walk in the Jardins de l’Hotel de Ville (Town Hall Gardens) and admire the Abbatiale St Ouen , one of Rouen’s most famous buildings. It will open again at 2 pm for visits, and it’s worth a look inside.

Rouen - Abbatiale St Ouen 03

10. Climb Saint Catherine Hill for the best views of the city

Rouen is surrounded by small mounts. It is not ideal for the climate, but it provides a great bird’s eye view of the city when the weather is clear. The most accessible one is Colline Sainte Catherine (Saint Catherine Hill). You’ll have to walk up there (about 3km) so allow one hour. It can be a great spot for sunset. From the Hotel de Ville bus stop, you can catch Bus 20 and stop at Cimetière du Mont Gargan. In 10 to 15 minutes, you’ll be near the start of the walk. You can check bus trips and timetables on this website .

11. Cruise the Seine River to the Port of Rouen

It might be hard to fit in a cruise on just a day trip to Rouen. But if you’re interested in visiting an inland port with economic importance (it’s not a seducing idea for everyone), it’s worth checking out if the crew from La Lutece are running tours on the day of your visit. The Port of Rouen used to be the main port in France for centuries and remains an important port today. If you don’t speak French, ask in advance if commentaries will be available in English. Hopefully, it has changed since I lived in Rouen.

Where to stay in Rouen

If you’re planning to stay longer in Rouen than just a day trip, I recommend staying in the town centre. There are many accommodation options, and you can easily walk from one place to another.

If you’re looking for something special, the Hotel de Bourgtheroulde *, with its beautiful courtyard views, is one of the most charming options in Rouen. The Hotel de la Cathedrale * is perfectly located and also has a lot of character. Otherwise, one of the cheapest options to stay in Rouen City Centre at a walking distance from the best parts of the old town is the Hôtel du Palais *.

What a lovely little city! This looks like it would be a great place to live. I’ve never been to Rouen before, despite several trips to France – I’ve spent most of my time in the south of the country.

' src=

Yes, I really enjoyed living there. Plus, it’s not far from Paris, and not far from the coast. The weather was the only downside: a bit too rainy and cold for me 😉 The South of France is lovely, but very different from the regions in the north. If you ever get the opportunity to travel to Brittany, Normandy and the East of France, you’ll discover other facets of the country!

' src=

This looks like a great day away from the city. Rouen looks charming!

Thanks, Anya. It’s a very different atmosphere compared to Paris and the half-timbered houses makes the architecture quite different as well!

' src=

Travel really changes your life. Beautiful photography too. Love your blog. Keep it up! :1

Thank you, Sonika. I appreciate the encouragements 🙂

' src=

What a great tour you have provided. The village looks beautiful and is filled with such history.

Thank you! It’s actually quite bigger than a village (a small city from a French point of view), but the most interesting places are in the small area of the old city centre. It makes it easy to wander around 🙂

' src=

I’ve never heard of Rouen before, but it sounds like an awesome idea for a trip from Paris! I love knowing that it’s easy to get there from Paris, and that most of the museums are free!

Yes, we’re very fortunate with our train network in France. It’s easy and often not expensive to go to regional cities from Paris.

' src=

I always dream to go to Paris. I hope I could go there in the near future. Your post is very informative, and very helpful. thanks for this.

Thank you. Paris is epic, I hope you’ll have a chance to see it soon.

' src=

This is a great post about Rouen. The architecture is beautiful, specially walking by scenic river Seine. I went there years ago on a school trip but didn’t get to see a lot. I will definitely go again now as I fell in love with medieval towns!

Wow! That’s a great school trip, lucky you! 🙂 I love seeing again places I visited as a kid. I get very surprised sometimes!

' src=

You’re a pro! I loved reading this? it’s so cool how you add the responsible travel tips – thanks ?

Thank you, Karolina. I find it important to raise awareness so people can decide to make “better” choices, so I’m happy you like them 😀

' src=

I should have visited this place when I was in Paris. I had so much free time in Paris and didn’t know what to do… Rouen looks so lovely and nice. I’d love to visit the Beaux-Arts Museum 🙂

' src=

Thank you so much for this helpful post! I have noted it and the days adventures if we go to Rouen in a few weeks!

' src=

We did this day trip from Paris yesterday. Rouen is absolutely beautiful. Besides the Musée des Beaux-Arts (which was terrific), there are an additional 7 free museums – check out the brochure you can pick up when visiting the Beaux-Arts museum. We mostly followed your path, but took so many side detours when something captured our fancy, so we didn’t have a chance to walk up the hill for a sunset. A one day visit was well-spent, but an additional day might be nice. We will return for an additional day some other time! Thanks for the guidance!

Viking Fjorgyn Seine / Normandy River Cruise, a Fabulous Adventure

Paris, the City of Light, entices with its lively Joie de vie, remarkable architecture, art, fashion, food, and history. Imagine strolling the banks of the Seine, exploring the world-class museums, or sipping coffee at a sidewalk café.

The Viking Seine/Normandy River Cruise starts and ends in Paris but makes noteworthy stops in picturesque Normandy. Guided excursions include Rouen, the capital of Normandy, the port city of Honfleur, immersion into Impressionist art, a day devoted to WWII history and the D-Day landing sites, and picturesque small rural villages.

rouen to paris river cruise

Before my departure, Viking sent me a helpful packet of travel documents that answered all my questions. They provided emergency contact numbers just in case.

Like most Americans, I arrived in Paris via an overnight flight. After clearing baggage claim, I saw a woman holding a Viking Cruises sign. That was reassuring because I knew she would take care of my transportation needs. However, I hoped to meet up with my daughter-in-law, Amy, arriving about the same time but on a different flight. No worries; the Viking staff and the van driver found Amy and then joined me along with two other passengers. Soon afterward, we left the airport and headed toward the cruise ship.

Our cabins were naturally not ready when we arrived dockside (still before 10 am). But we were warmly welcomed onboard, and our luggage was stowed. Staff led us to the dining room, and we revived ourselves with tasty breakfast items from the buffet.

Despite the lack of sleep, Amy was ready for her first Parisian adventure, and I was excited to join her. We postponed exploring the ship and set foot toward the Eiffel Tower. (The Viking dock is close enough to make the walk.)

The iconic 1083-foot steel tower, constructed for the 1898 World’s Fair, stands as a beloved landmark. Visitors take the elevators up and gaze down upon the sprawling city. They take many photos and stroll around the adjoining field called the Champs du Mars and the surrounding gardens. Amy and I did all that, but I was dragging on the walk back to the Viking ship.

The Viking Fjorgyn

Fortunately, the Viking crew welcomed us again, and this time, they escorted us to our cabin on the upper level. We found the room with two single beds, floor-to-ceiling windows that slide open, and a small balcony with two chairs and a bistro table. The closet was big enough for us both, and we could stash our luggage under the beds.

Expect a small but functional bathroom. When not taking a shower, the doors open inward, providing more space, or at least it feels that way. Heated flooring adds an oh-so-nice touch when getting out of the shower.

The ship’s upper level includes the Aquavit Lounge with full-length windows and a popular, well-stocked bar. Outside the lounge, an espresso and cappuccino-making machine remain open 24/7 for self-service. Elves seem to replenish the complimentary pastries frequently.

The Viking Fjorgyn appeared new as it was built in 2020 specifically for the Seine River (and not used during the pandemic). The Scandinavian interior design feels sleek. She carries a maximum of 168 passengers in 84 outside staterooms (22 Standard Staterooms, 18 French Balcony Staterooms, 35 Veranda Staterooms, 7 Veranda Suites, and 2 Explorer Suites). The ship measures 410 feet in length and maintains a crew of 46. River cruise boats carry far fewer passengers than mega ocean liners. The limited number of guests quickly become friends as they gather at meals and on excursions.

There is no spa on this boat, as most Viking guests are more interested in the historical and cultural excursions. Viking provides pre-excursion information and excellent guides. Guests leave the cruise having experienced and learned much about France. Yet, they are pampered and catered to by the staff. The combination is ideal.

If you are wondering, Viking names their longships (river cruisers) after Norse sagas. Fjorgyn is the Norse Goddess of the Earth. In Norse mythology, Mother Earth, Fjorgyn has been associated with the start of the growing season. She was the mother of Thor, the mighty thunder god, and the son of Odin.

After nibbling on a late lunch, we took a few moments to unpack and settle. One of the significant advantages of cruising is not having to transfer luggage and constantly pack and unpack.

Everyone was called to their Muster Stations for a practice drill with life preservers. The Seine is not wide, and I suspect one could swim to either side without difficulty. However, Viking is wise to practice safety measures.

Afterward, all aboard sipped a champagne cocktail to officially start the cruise, followed by a relaxing, multi-course meal. The main restaurant rests on the mid-deck, below our cabin. Picture windows line the dining room, giving guests an almost 360-degree view. The central area stays ready for breakfast and lunch buffets.

Viking’s policy is open seating, so they don’t assign tables. Each meal offers a choice of daily selections and always includes the option for popular favorites, like Eggs Benedict, hamburgers, and steak or salmon. Wine and beer are complimentary at meals, and those with the Silver Spirits package may choose higher-priced drinks and wine anytime.

Itinerary and Shore Excursions

Paris- Day 2

A panoramic city tour of Paris began after breakfast. We, cruisers, boarded a bus and listened to a guide describe the famous sites as we passed. We stopped near Notre Dame to see the restoration work progressing on the cathedral. Our guide gave us free time to explore, shop, or grab a coffee in a nearby café.

The tour also included a stop for photos at the Eiffel Tower before returning to the ship for lunch. In the afternoon, Amy chose an excursion to Montmartre and Sacre Coeur, and I went on a Flavors of Paris outing, a delicious foodie tour. Others opted for the full-day excursion: Scenic Paris and Highlights of the Louvre.

That evening the glittering Eiffel Tower in the distance took center stage. It’s a pinch-me moment to see the illuminated icon sparkling like fireworks. Simply stunning.

La Roche- Guyon and Vernon – Day 3

The Fjorgyn sailed during the night; we reached La Roche-Guyon the following morning. An ancient castle and chateau hover on white chalk hills dominating a tiny village (population approximately 500).

Our cruise director, Mimi, led us on a walking tour through the gardens toward Chateau de La Roche-Guyon. The fortified keep, which overlooks the valley, is linked to the château via a mysterious stairway dug into the rock. The Château was built in the 12th century and featured a combination of medieval, Renaissance, and classical styles, including a formal kitchen garden. Various owners added rooms to the chateau over hundreds of years.

We climbed many stairs within the chateau, taking in panoramic autumnal views. Amy climbed the dark, secret stairway to the top of the keep.

Some travel lists include La Roche-Guyon as one of France’s “Most Beautiful Villages,” and I tend to agree. I appreciated the opportunity to explore it.

The captain moved our boat to nearby Vernon, and most guests took an afternoon excursion that included a drive-by glimpse of Monet’s House and Garden named Giverny. His colorful home was closed for the season, so we went to Auvers-Sur-Oise. Auvers is where Vincent Van Gogh lived his last few months in 1890. The location gave him such a source of creative inspiration he completed 80 paintings in seventy days.

A guide led us through the little town that seemed like a nineteenth-century time capsule. We strolled cobblestone pathways past shuttered homes, flower boxes, greenery, and shops. We paused at the Eglise Notre-Dame-de-l’Assomption, the church painted by Van Gogh. I loved comparing the Gothic building to the well-known painting.

We continued up a hill to the cemetery with the graves of Vincent and his brother Theo. The graveyard lies across from the fields that inspired another van Gogh masterpiece, The Wheatfield and Crows.

We ended the visit at Auberge Ravoux, the artist’s final home. Only two or three at a time could enter his tiny rented attic bedroom. It seemed to be filled with sadness. Afterward, the group watched an excellent video/slideshow of his art from the area.

Back onboard, the day ended with a special dinner: The Taste of France, the only buffet dinner on the cruise. The vast selection of delicious cheeses, entrees, and desserts overwhelmed me. I turned in with a full stomach and fond memories of two lovely small villages packed with history and art, plus too much fine food.

Rouen and Surroundings – Day 4

Rouen, the largest city in Normandy, offers one of the most beautiful Gothic cathedrals in the world. The intricate designs on the exterior look like lace. Guided walking tours of the city speak of the town’s long history and Joan of Arc. Joan was burned at the stake in Rouen after her trial. A modern church stands on the site, the interior aglow with a beautiful wall of stained glass windows.

Amy took the afternoon excursion to Honfleur, a medieval port village with narrow cobblestone alleys and a central rectangular harbor in the middle. Unfortunately, it was raining the entire time, so she did not get the photos she had hoped.

I ventured past the bucolic countryside to a rustic old farm. Once there, I watched a trained sheepherding dog corral and move the animals about the field. This behavior was fascinating and fun.

Normandy is known for apples, apple cider, and the liqueur Calvados. My tour group strolled through the property’s apple orchard and cidery/distillery. We entered the tasting room to learn all about cider. To the French, cider means an alcoholic drink, whereas a non-alcoholic choice is apple juice. Calvados is stronger than cider.

D- Day- Day 5

The  D-Day landing sites are a significant draw to the region, and Viking offers two full-day excursions. The tour aimed at Americans visits the Caen Memorial Museum and includes a documentary film. Our guide was a professor of history, so he gave us definitive information on the events during WWII.

We drove on to the  172-acre American Cemetery, with 9,387 American graves. The peaceful cemetery with white crosses stretches as far as the eye can see. It honors the Americans lost in the Normandy battles. It’s an emotionally difficult place to visit, but one that keeps alive the memory of those who fought bravely to defend global freedom. We owe them much.

Viking arranges a special ceremony at “The Spirit of American Youth Rising from the Waves” statue. The playing of the Star Spangled Banner, followed by Taps, brought tears to almost everyone’s eyes. It was a very moving tribute and made me a proud American. We learned that the average age of the soldiers buried in the cemetery ranged from 19-22 years.

The tour moved on to Omaha Beach, another U.S. landing site. The long sandy expanse sat empty on this cold and dreary November day. A stunning memorial stands on the beach, honoring the critical events along this waterfront in 1944. Another monument memorializes the event in the open town square.

A second Viking day tour began with a stop at the famous Bayeux Tapestry, something I would have loved to see. It continues to Gold Beach and Arromanches,  British and Canadian battle sites, Juno Beach, and the British cemetery in Ranville.

Les Andelys – Day 6

While the ship sailed in the morning, many attended a lighthearted cooking class from the chef and his assistant. They prepared a Tarte au Citron or Lemon Tart with ease. We received copies of the recipe; I will try replicating it at home.

The day was warm enough to sit outside on the Aquavit Terrace at lunchtime. Fortunately, we finished our meal before the rain started. As the boat approached the village of Les Andelys, we saw the fortress called Chateau Galliard. The buildings are ruins of Richard the Lionhearted castle, built between 1196-1198.

The group tour began in the rain, but as we climbed up the hill, a somewhat challenging walk, a rainbow appeared. We explored the ruins with superb panoramic views. When ready, we strolled downhill into the charming town with half-timbered buildings. There, some of us lingered for shopping.

After dinner, most of the guests participated in a fun game in the lounge. Cruise Director Mimi explained that we’d know the answers but had to pick the most likely response. The lively game ended with a party, music, and dancing. FYI: Don’t expect much professional entertainment on this cruise; most guests retire after dinner.

Paris Surroundings- Day 7

Our last full day began in La Pecq with a morning trip to Chateau de Malmaison, the magnificent home of Josephine and Napoleon. The house sits on the outskirts of France, but most tourists miss it (being too far for a taxi, and no direct bus route). Thanks to Viking, we were dropped off at the gate.

The excursion included a fascinating discussion on Josephine’s life, home, and gardens. Big surprise – this home was also where the Louisiana Purchase was laid out and signed. I am so glad I could visit this fascinating site. I now have the desire to learn more about Josephine.

After lunch, many chose to visit the Palace of Versailles, the flamboyant, over-the-top estate of Louis XIV, the Sun King. The extravagance in his estate makes you understand why the French Revolution occurred. While Louis XIV ruled competently during his long life, he spared no expense on himself,  and later Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette took the extreme lifestyle over the edge.

Tip: The Palace is worth seeing, but always crowded. The King’s bed chambers, the Chapel, and the Hall of Mirrors do not disappoint, except for the hordes of tourists. The gardens spread over 2,000 acres (you will walk miles), but unfortunately, this cruise was in November, and the greenery could have been better (and we needed more time). If you plan to visit Versailles, arrange to go when the fountains are working. You won’t be disappointed. Otherwise, expect crowds and more gold leaf than you’ve ever seen!

Sadly, we neared the end of our time together. The boat moved while we were at Versailles, so the bus returned us to the dock in Paris. Guests, now friends, lingered over a lovely last dinner and prepared to travel home.

Disembarkment- Day 8

Viking distributed color-coordinated luggage tags to get everyone’s luggage to the right spot. They also assigned us to one of the frequent buses or vans leaving for the airport. The staff rechecked our luggage and loaded it into the vehicle.

Of course, some passengers chose to stay in Paris, and I wished I’d made that choice. But off to the airport I went, Viking staff staying with all until we were in the correct airplane check-in line. Au revoir.

I cherish memories of this fabulous cruise with my daughter-in-law and our adventures in France. If you are considering the Viking Seine cruise, go!

The upcoming offerings will include 7 distinct itineraries, comprising 6-day Advent cruises, a 7-day Christmas cruise , and a luxurious 7-day New Year’s cruise, each boasting enriching excursions including panoramic city tours of Paris and optional outings.

Serving as the host ship for these winter journeys is the freshly renovated riverboat VIVA GLORIA , a premium vessel accommodating up to 152 passengers in 76 cabins across 3 decks .

Most staterooms are with French balconies, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding landscapes.

The ship’s amenities include the main restaurant, Riverside, serving gourmet breakfast, lunch, and dinner menus, as well as the newly designed VINO wine bar located at the stern, providing guests with an opportunity to savor the finest French wines. Passengers embarking on the “winter magic” cruises will embark on enriching itineraries beginning and ending in Paris, strategically mooring near the Eiffel Tower for an overnight stay amid the iconic landmarks of the city. The journey continues into Normandy, visiting historic towns like Poissy , Les Andelys , and Rouen , renowned for its cultural heritage and notable landmarks such as the Rouen Cathedral and Joan of Arc Museum. Excursions also include visits to picturesque towns like Vernon and Conflans , offering guests a deeper immersion into the region’s rich history and charming landscapes.

During the festive season, guests will have the opportunity to explore Paris illuminated by dazzling light festivals and embark on excursions to the opulent Palace of Versailles. The cruises will also feature traditional Christmas market visits, museum tours, ice-skating, and French wine tasting sessions at VINO, adding to the seasonal charm.

Onboard entertainment aboard VIVA GLORIA will capture the essence of French flair with themed evenings evoking the ambiance of 1930s clubs in Montparnasse and Montmartre, complete with lively tap-dancing and Parisian melodies. 'You're not fighting the crowds' in Europe when you visit on a river cruise

rouen to paris river cruise

Europe has no shortage of marquee tourist hot spots , but Diamond Meadows’ first river cruise there didn’t include them.

The 28-year-old graduate student took a cruise along the Rhine and Moselle rivers that took her to cities like Koblenz and Trier in Germany (she supplemented the sailing with train travel around Austria, Switzerland and elsewhere).

Meadows was traveling with her mom and her mom’s boss, who uses a wheelchair. The group chose the CroisiEurope Cruises sailing for the ease of sailing with a mobility device . But she discovered other upsides.

“It takes you exactly into the heart of the city,” said Meadows, who is based in Tennessee. Their roughly 160-guest vessel offered convenient drop-offs in smaller destinations, allowing them “to access so much more.”

Many European destinations were packed with tourists last summer . But river cruises in the continent can offer a more laid-back way to travel with small ships visiting a mix of popular and less-crowded ports.

Are river cruises better than ocean cruises?

Jen Campbell Boles, founder of the travel agency Explore More Family Travel, said that while cruising in general is a “great value for seeing Europe,” river sailings are particularly immersive. “One quote we always use in the travel industry is, ‘Ocean cruise liners take you to the destination, river cruises take us through the destination,’” she said.

Passengers visit not only major cities but also quaint villages and often disembark within walking distance of attractions. When they are done exploring, they return to a ship with an average of 150 guests.

“It's more intimate, it's cozier,” said Campbell Boles. “You're not fighting the crowds, obviously.”

That was part of the draw for Jim Jones, 57, who took Avalon Waterways river cruises with his wife in 2011 and 2014.

“The smaller cities were an attraction,” said Jones, who is based in Phoenix and works for a software company. He enjoyed visiting Avignon in the south of France, for example, which was once the seat of the papacy . “I’m a total history geek,” he said. On their first cruise, he recalled, “just about every town” they visited had a farmers’ market, allowing them to sample local food.

'Access to hidden-gem ports': Why this luxury yacht is the best option for beach lovers

Unlike ocean cruise ships, with their large casinos and plentiful bars, onboard “it was very relaxed and a much slower pace.”

River cruise vessels tend to have “less bells and whistles,” Campbell Boles said (though she added that guests get a more personalized experience as a result of their small size).

Adam Duckworth, president and founder of Travelmation, echoed that. He said the cruises are less about the ship than where it’s going. “This is truly an experience about itineraries.”

Are European river cruises cheaper than land-based trips?

While travelers can find land-based accommodations that are less expensive than river cruises, there are other factors to consider.

River cruises tend to bundle more costs, such as alcohol in the fare, than a mainstream ocean cruise line, Duckworth said (though exact policies vary by line). At least one excursion per day is typically included, as well, Campbell Boles added.

She said demand for Europe is still “through the roof” and land-based pricing is particularly high. “Even if you're staying in the highest category stateroom or suite, you're spending less than an equivalent hotel,” she said.

Are luxury cruise ships worth the money? We did the math for Silversea's Silver Nova.

Would you spend $14,000 on a cruise? Here's why these travelers splurged.

Transportation from one destination to another is also built into a river cruise, whereas travelers might have to take a train or make other arrangements to visit a mix of places. “I mean that really adds up in Europe, so this is a great way to see a lot more variety,” Campbell Boles said.

Passengers can also add pre- and post-cruise stays, allowing them to “get the best of both worlds.”

“What we say is that a river cruise oftentimes can be a premium product,” added Duckworth. “But for what you're experiencing – the comfort, the (lower) stress, the luxurious experience on board – we find it to be actually the best value through Europe from our experience.”

Are European river cruises kid-friendly?

Since river cruises require a certain amount of free time – most are at least seven days long – they have tended to be popular with older guests, according to Duckworth.

But in the past couple of years, he has noticed more multigenerational travel in the sector. “We're seeing grandparents bring their grandkids, we're seeing young professionals go on a river in Europe for the first time,” Duckworth said.

Some operators have offerings that are particularly well-suited to younger guests. Adventures by Disney offers river cruises with AmaWaterways, and Uniworld Boutique River Cruises has a Generations Collection .

How long should I go on a cruise?: How long and short cruises compare

Even if programming is curated with kids in mind, though, Duckworth cautioned that river cruise vessels don’t offer the same breadth of amenities as large ocean ships. “If your kids want to go to a waterpark and they want to go on a FlowRider and they want to play putt-putt all day, there are great lines for you, but a European river cruise is probably not one of them currently,” he said.

Some lines also don’t allow kids or have varying age requirements, so it’s important to do some research beforehand.

For those going for the first time, Campbell Boles suggested starting with a cruise on the Danube or Rhine since they are “kind of the most iconic.”

“I mean, it’s Europe,” she added. “It’s going to be great no matter what river you go on.”
