Commemorate 9/11's 20th Anniversary at Pennsylvania's Flight 93 National Memorial
Remember the victims and learn the story of the brave passengers who fought the hijackers.
At 10:03 a.m. on Sept. 11, 2001 , United Airlines Flight 93 — headed from Newark, New Jersey, to San Francisco — crashed into a remote field just outside of Shanksville, Pennsylvania, a small borough of approximately 313 people located 60 miles southeast of Pittsburgh. And while the Flight 93 National Memorial provides a minute-by-minute look at what happened that day in Pennsylvania and around the nation, it never lets visitors forget that the real story is found in the heroism of the 33 passengers and seven crew members who gave their lives to protect others.
The memorial, run by the National Park Service, pays tribute to those brave souls who, facing certain death, chose to stop four terrorists intent on diverting the plane to Washington, D.C., with the goal of crashing it into the U.S. Capitol. Realizing that the plane had been hijacked, the passengers and crew made an agonizing decision. “They took a vote to try to take the plane back,” says park ranger Robert Franz, describing the events of that day. “This memorial honors their courage and their strength, and the deep love that they had for others.”

The memorial was established by Congress in 2002 and built in stages, after an international design competition that drew some 1,100 entries, by Paul Murdoch Architects and Nelson Byrd Woltz Landscape Architects. Ground was broken in 2011, and the visitor center complex finally opened in 2015, on the site of a former strip mine. It sits at the edge of a serene, bowl-shaped field that's encircled by a crescent of 40 groves of 40 maple and oak trees, radiating outward.
Location: The Flight 93 National Memorial is at 6424 Lincoln Highway in Stoystown, Pennsylvania (use this address in your GPS; searching for the site itself may not take you to the correct entrance).
Hours: Open daily from sunrise to sunset except major holidays.
Parking: Ample parking is available, and paved roads and walkways connect all of the memorial's components.
Price: Entry is free. Audio tours are available; rangers also lead special programs each day focused on the story of Flight 93 and the Tower of Voices.
Driving into the 2,200-acre site, you'll first come to the Tower of Voices, a striking 93-foot-tall landmark containing 40 wind chimes, whose sounds are meant to be “gentle reminders” of the voices of the passengers and crew — a late addition to the memorial that was unveiled in 2018. Down the road at the visitor center, a black granite sidewalk that follows the flight path of the doomed airliner leads to an overlook high above the crash site and debris field, where you'll see a 17-ton sandstone boulder marking the point of impact.
A museum recounts all of the details of the day, including a timeline of events for all four flights hijacked on Sept. 11: Flight 93, the two planes that brought down the twin towers of New York's World Trade Center, and the one that hit the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia. Poignant exhibits include debris found at the Pennsylvania crash site and heartbreaking recordings of phone calls that passengers and crew members made to their loved ones — like Thomas E. Burnett Jr., who called his wife from the plane to say, “We have to do something. We can't wait for the authorities. ... It's up to us. I think we can do it."
The museum includes each victim's personal story, such as that of Nicole Carol Miller, a 21-year-old student in California who had been scheduled to fly on Sept. 10, but due to a thunderstorm that evening had to change her flight to the next morning. Another, Lauren Catuzzi Grandcolas, who was pregnant, was flying home to California after attending her grandmother's funeral in New Jersey. She'd been planning to write a book encouraging women to follow their dreams.
ARTICLE CONTINUES AFTER ADVERTISEMENT
You can also drive or take a trail down to Memorial Plaza at the boundary of the crash site to pay your respects at the Wall of Names, where 40 polished marble panels are inscribed with the names of the people who perished.
It's a moving, at times gut-wrenching, tribute, immortalized by the words etched in glass at the overlook: “A common field one day. A field of honor forever."

The 20th anniversary
A series of educational and memorial events at the site is scheduled for Sept. 8-12, including the Sept. 11 observance, which the public is encouraged to attend. The ceremony begins at 9:45 a.m., and at 10:03, the time of the crash, the names of the passengers and crew members will be read, the Bells of Remembrance will be rung in their memory, and a wreath will be placed at the Wall of Names. See the Park Service website for more information.

Flight 93 National Memorial
September 11, 2001, transformed the 21st century when 19 terrorists boarded and hijacked 4 airplanes, using them to attack America. The 4th hijacked plane, United Airlines Flight 93, crashed in rural Pennsylvania, just 80-miles east of Pittsburgh.
Flight 93 National Memorial is a place to learn about the 40 passengers and crew members of Flight 93 whose actions thwarted the hijackers’ attempt to target Washington, DC, and most likely the US Capitol. The memorial is a place to walk beside their final resting place and honor the extraordinary courage of those who fought back against the terrorists.

Today's installment is Part 2 of 4 destination packages from Columbus Monthly's annual travel guide. We hope you enjoy.
Traveling to Gettysburg and Antietam
Not every traveler is a history buff. But a visit to Gettysburg, site of one of the most iconic and bloody battles of the Civil War, should probably be on every American’s bucket list.
From Columbus, the drive takes a bit more than six hours. And a two- or three-day visit to the Pennsylvania landmark can easily include several other noteworthy sites along the way, including another important Civil War battlefield, the fort where George Washington suffered his most humiliating defeat and the memorial where the first Americans to fight back during 9/11 are commemorated.
In addition to being a major historic site, Gettysburg is also a lovely small town adept at catering to the nearly 1 million visitors who arrive each year. Even visitors who never set foot in the Gettysburg National Military Park would find plenty to do. Town streets are packed with shopping, dining, breweries and wineries, hotels and inns, galleries and museums. But the battlefield should definitely be on the to-do list.
More than 165,000 Union and Confederate soldiers clashed from July 1-3, 1863. The largest battle ever fought on this continent resulted in more than 51,000 casualties — and turned the tide of the war in favor of the Union. The battlefield Museum and Visitors Center includes 12 separate galleries, many interactive exhibits and thousands of artifacts on display. Visitors can also experience the Gettysburg Cyclorama, a painting in-the-round created in the 1880s that tells the story of the battle and is, itself, a magnificent piece of history.
Plenty can also be discovered on a self-guided auto tour. The 6,000-acre battlefield is crossed by several small roads with plenty of places to pull off and explore the many monuments and markers that were erected in the decades after the battle.
Bus tours are available from the visitor center. But the best way to tour the battlefield may be with a licensed guide in your own vehicle. Guides are happy to customize tours based on visitors’ interests and knowledge.
Although the three-day Battle of Gettysburg was the bloodiest battle of the Civil War, Antietam, near the village of Sharpsburg, Maryland, was the site of the war’s bloodiest single day — and the bloodiest day in American history, with some 23,000 casualties. Antietam National Battlefield is just an hour’s drive from Gettysburg, making it a logical stop for history-lovers passing through, or an easy daytrip for travelers extending their stay in the Pennsylvania town.
Like Gettysburg, Antietam is dotted with monuments honoring the military units and men who served there. One of the most curious is a Brobdingnagian marker commemorating the service of a young commissary sergeant who went on to become President William McKinley. The monument celebrates McKinley’s efforts at bringing coffee and hot food to Union troops on the front lines.
No, really.
But if I were on the front, tired and hungry, I would certainly have welcomed and appreciated Sgt. Billy’s offerings. (Come to think of it, this might actually be the most noble act a future president has ever performed.)
Fort Necessity National Battlefield
Southwestern Pennsylvania also hosts two other important historic sites along the route from central Ohio. Fort Necessity National Battlefield near Farmington, Pennsylvania, is a small historic site featuring a museum and the recreated fort where George Washington, as a very young lieutenant colonel, led a unit of British colonial troops to a humiliating defeat at the hands of the French in 1754. Though discouraged, Washington, of course, persevered, having much better luck decades later in the American Revolution.
Few Americans who remember Sept. 11, 2001, can visit the Flight 93 National Memorial near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, and not get a bit emotional. The memorial tells the story of the terrorist attacks on the United States that day and of the passengers on United Flight 93 who gave their lives fighting back against their hijackers, preventing their plane from being used as a weapon against another prominent target, possibly the U.S. Capitol.
The memorial marks the site where the plane hit the ground, killing all aboard. In addition to a museum, the site features several trails, including the Trail of Remembrance along the final flight path. Also at the memorial is the Tower of Voices, a 93-foot-tall structure containing 40 large wind chimes, each tuned to a separate and distinct tone of its own — a haunting and fitting way to remember the 40 passengers and crew of Flight 93 and a bit of history many of us lived through ourselves.
Where to Stay When Visiting Gettysburg
Gettysburg offers a wide variety of lodging options. The Gettysburg Hotel (est. 1797) is a historic property at the heart of downtown with rates from $118 per night. For a cozier stay, consider the Brafferton Inn , with rooms beginning around $110 per night, or Battlefield Bed and Breakfast in a restored 1810 farmhouse, with rooms beginning around $210 per night. hotelgettysburg.com , brafferton.com , gettysburgbattlefield.com

Frequently asked questions
- The trick to having an amazing flight experience is to pack ahead. So, let’s start with the essentials: passport, official ID, cash and daily medications. Next, bring items that’ll help keep you entertained, like your laptop or a good book. It’s also smart to bring your chargers, a comfy neck pillow and a pair of earphones. And of course, be sure to toss in toiletries like a toothbrush, cleansing wipes and a clean T-shirt.
- While the list of banned items can differ between airlines, the general rule to follow is avoid carrying anything sharp, flammable or explosive. This includes things like screwdrivers, pocket knives, spray paint and flares. Sporting equipment like hockey sticks, and objects that could harm passengers, such as pepper spray and firearms, aren’t allowed in the cabin either.
- The answer to a comfortable flight can be as simple as your choice of clothing. Prepare for changes in temperature by bringing layers. This will keep you nice and warm if the cabin starts to cool down. Shoes like stilettos, flip flops and lace-up boots are best left in your suitcase. Even though they may be your favorites, go for flat, closed-toed footwear like slip-ons. Your feet will thank you for it.
- A condition by the name of DVT (deep vein thrombosis) is a potential risk on long-haul flights. It results from blood clotting due to inactivity and poor circulation. Walking up and down the aisle and doing leg and foot exercises in your seat is a great way to prevent this from happening. Wearing a good pair of compression tights or socks can also help.
- Your travel documents and ID will need to be presented to security personnel. Have them close by to avoid fumbling around for them.
- Your coat, belt, keys and other items in your pocket, like your earphones, will need to go on a tray through the X-ray machine. Make your life easier by removing them before your turn.
- For just a few minutes, you’ll have to unplug from the digital world. Your phone, laptop and any other electronic devices also need to be sent through the scanner.
- Remove liquids and gels from your hand luggage. They often need to be sent through the X-ray machine separately. Each product should be no larger than 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) and everything must fit inside a single quart-size (one liter), clear zip-lock bag.
- There’s a possibility that you’ll be required to take your shoes off for scanning, so wearing slip-on sneakers is always a clever idea.
- Airlines won’t allow any sharp objects in the cabin. If you need to bring these kinds of items, pack them safely in your checked luggage.
