Seattle Hotel with Shuttle to Pier 91 and 66

Port of Seattle hotels with cruise shuttle

Seattle Waterfront and Hotel

Traffic jams in Seattle are legendary, and rated among the worst in the entire United States.

Add variable weather conditions that can be blustery and cold – not to mention the rains that are even more notorious than the city’s traffic – and just getting to the pier to board your ship can seem like an unending journey in itself.

Luckily, most hotels in Seattle can accommodate your overnight needs, and then get you to the cruiseship terminal with a dedicated shuttle service, typically for a very reasonable fee.

Seattle is a tourist and business destination itself, with a broad selection of hotels and accommodations at various price levels.

With port transfers widely available and cheap, your best bet is to choose a hotel based on your preferences – what type of room you’d like, price range, star rating, free breakfast and so on according to your needs.

Within your choices, you will no doubt find hotels that offer a port shuttle service to Smith Cove and Bell Street cruise terminals, and where they don’t many will arrange a port transfer through a car service.

Looking for a hotel to stay near the Cape Liberty cruise port before or after your cruise? You’re in luck. As one of the most visited areas in the world, the New York/New Jersey area offers plenty of choices.

Hotels near Cape Liberty for cruising

In fact, you’ll find every type of accommodation, from large national hotel chains to smaller boutique offerings. To make things easy, we’ve rounded up the hotels near the Cape Liberty port that make good spots to stay before your cruise.

You should know that there aren’t many hotels right at the cruise port. But with Newark airport just minutes away, Jersey City, and Staten Island all near, you have plenty of options that are still plenty close (typically about 20 minutes drive).

All of the hotels below are on the western side of the river. This way it’s easier to get to the Cape Liberty port and you also don’t have to worry about the traffic that can happen on the bridges and tunnels between New York and New Jersey.

This is by no means supposed to be all your choices as there are literally hundreds of hotels in the Cape Liberty area. Instead, these are spots that are highly rated and close to the cruise port. You can click on the hotel name to read more about it on Kayak.com.

Cape Liberty Cruise Hotels

Sonesta Simply Suites Jersey City Jersey City is right across the Hudson River from Manhattan. That means if you need a hotel and want to be close to both the city and the cruise port, then this location is fantastic. It gets strong reviews, with its location among its high attributes. Expect to pay a little more than some hotels closer to Cape Liberty, but you can still find lots of nights under $200. The port is just 20 minutes away.

  • Distance to Port: 8.5 miles

Country Inn & Suites Newark Airport (Offers Parking/Transportation Package) Recently renovated and with a free shuttle to the airport (perfect for those flying in), the Country Inn & Suites is a solid choice before or after your cruise. It gets high ratings, has an indoor pool, and offers free wi-fi as well. You’ll be about 11 miles from the ship (a 20-minute drive), making it relatively easy come embarkation day. One more thing — it also offers a “Sleep & Cruise Package” that features transportation to the cruise port. And if driving in, they also have parking packages where you leave your car while you sail.

  • Distance to Port: 11.5 miles

Victorian Bed & Breakfast of Staten Island Looking for somewhere that isn’t a chain hotel? You don’t have a lot of options in this area, but Victorian Bed & Breakfast is a good one. It gets fabulous reviews, thanks to the unique atmosphere of staying in a historic house built in 1846. The location is just a quick 20 minutes to the cruise port.

  • Distance to Port: 8 miles

Residence Inn Newark Airport (Offers Parking/Transportation Package) Among the highest-rated hotels near the Cape Liberty cruise port, the Residence Inn is a great choice for those flying in (the shuttle between the airport and the hotel is a nice feature). It’s right near the airport and only about 12 miles from the ships. In addition, the hotel offers a “Park Here, Cruise There” parking package if driving in that has 8 nights parking and a transfer to and from the cruise terminal.

Hampton Inn & Suites Staten Island Ten miles from the port, Hampton Inn is known for being a popular choice with guests nationwide. This location gets great reviews, with many mentioning the value (people also seemed to like the free breakfast). In fact, we saw rates under $150 for a number of nights. From this spot, it’s still only about a 20-minute Uber or Lyft ride to the Cape Liberty port.

  • Distance to Port: 10 miles

Embassy Suites Newark Airport Sitting in a pocket of several other hotels near the Newark airport, Embassy Suites makes a good choice if you are just looking for a comfortable hotel that’s convenient to both a flight and the cruise terminal. The hotel is well reviewed, and you’re only about 20 minutes from the ship. In addition, there is an indoor pool, airport shuttle, restaurant, and free breakfast for guests.

Springhill Suites by Marriott – Newark It’s hard to beat the mix of location, cost, and value of the SpringHill Suites. It’s just north of the Newark-Liberty airport, and a fairly straight 15-minute shot to the port. This hotel gets strong reviews, offers free wi-fi, breakfast, and rates on many days are under $150 per night. If you’re flying into Newark there is also a shuttle between the hotel and the airport. So you can fly in, get a shuttle, stay the night, and then have a short ride to the ship the next morning.

Hyatt Regency Jersey City on the Hudson Hyatt Regency is known for a higher-end stay, and this hotel fits the bill. It sits right on the Hudson River, with views of Manhattan and a short ferry ride to the city. But since it is on the New Jersey side of the river, it’s relatively affordable (we found rates under $200 on some rights) for the level of hotel. It’s also only about 8 miles from the cruise ship. One other thing to like? The indoor heated pool looks out over the river and the city. That’s a nice way to start your vacation.

  • Review Rating: 4.5 out of 5

The Westin Jersey City The Westin offers a four-star hotel in Jersey City that’s just across the river from New York. It’s also just a short walk to a subway stop that takes you right to Manhattan. You’re roughly 20 minutes from the cruise port, which an Uber or Lyft can get you there for just about $25. The hotel gets excellent ratings, and includes an indoor pool, onsite restaurant, and views of the downtown skyline.

  • Distance to Port: 9 miles

Harbor House Bed and Breakfast As the crow flies, this is is one of the closest spots to the ship (though you have to take a more roundabout way to get to the port). In fact, wake up early enough and you might even see your ship sailing in the morning of your cruise. This bed and breakfast is right on the water between Cape Liberty and the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, giving you a quiet, out-of-the-way spot with great views. It’s also relatively affordable, with rooms starting at $99 per night.

  • Price: $-$$
  • Distance to Port: 12.5 miles

Hilton Garden Inn New York/Staten Island Looking for one of the highest-rated hotels near the Cape Liberty port? It’s this Hilton Garden Inn. At this spot you’re about 10 miles from the cruise terminal, with a hotel that almost feels like it’s in a park despite being convenient to major thoroughfares. It also serves as a wedding venue to give you an idea of its charm and appeal.

Courtyard by Marriott Newark Liberty Airport (Offers Parking Package) Almost a straight shot to the cruise port, it’s hard to beat this hotel for convenience of cruising from Cape Liberty. It’s adjacent to Newark-Liberty and features a free airport shuttle for those flying in. Driving in? Then the hotel also offers a parking package with seven days included if you are driving in. That can save you money versus parking at the port. The hotel itself is clean and updated, offering a comfortable stay before your cruise.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are there any hotels right at the cruise port? Unfortunately, no hotels are located right at the Cape Liberty terminal. The port is at the end of a long spit of land without much right nearby. Instead, the closest hotels are in Staten Island or near the Newark-Liberty airport.

These locations are about 15-20 minutes away, so it is a relatively short ride to get from the hotel to the cruise ships. Expect the cost to be about $15-25 for a ride.

Where should I stay if I want to also visit New York City? If you plan to cruise and also want to visit the city, we suggest one of the hotels above that’s located in Jersey City. This spot is right across the river from New York, meaning you get the best of both worlds. You can be right next to New York City, but also just about 20 minutes from the cruise port on the Jersey side.

Port Everglades cruise port: A guide to cruising from Fort Lauderdale

As Cruises Return, Royal Caribbean CEO Discusses Lost Year

With 10 cruise lines sailing out of Port Everglades (and more to come) and 3 million-plus passengers annually, Fort Lauderdale's cruise port is the third busiest in the country — behind PortMiami and Port Canaveral (near Orlando).

Ships sail from Port Everglades mainly to the Bahamas , Mexico and the Caribbean , but many travelers choose to make Fort Lauderdale's world-famous beaches and waterways part of their vacation plans with pre- and post-cruise stays.

Arguably one of the best aspects of flying into and sailing out of Fort Lauderdale is the fact that Port Everglades is conveniently located less than 2 miles from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL). In fact, it's the closest cruise port to any airport in the country, which makes it easy to access for out-of-towners who want to fly in and cruise out on the same day.

Port Everglades is also an easy port to depart from on debarkation day because passengers can use Global Entry and the Mobile Passport Control app to skip long customs queues at the terminal.

Most travelers prefer to fly into FLL because it's so close to Port Everglades, making transfers much quicker and cheaper than from MIA. In fact, it's possible to book a same-day flight and get to your ship within an hour of your flight landing.

MIA offers more daily flights on the whole. If you're flying in from overseas, MIA also offers more international flight options. Miami's airport might also be more appealing if you're a member of an airline loyalty program or a cardholder who wants to prioritize lounge access.

Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport

Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) is the nearest airport to Port Everglades. Only 1.8 miles away, it's the closest airport to a cruise port in the country. Major carriers, including Alaska Airlines, Allegiant Air, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Frontier Airlines, JetBlue, Silver Airways, Southwest Airlines, Spirit Airlines and United Airlines, all fly into Fort Lauderdale's airport.

If you need to kill time between the cruise disembarkation and your flight time, the airport offers a United Club Lounge and a Delta Sky Club for passengers of those airlines, as well as an Escape Lounge in Terminal 3 that's open to all travelers in that terminal for a fee. FLL does not have a Priority Pass lounge , but Priority Pass members with restaurant perks get a dining discount at the Kafe Kalik restaurant in Terminal 4. (This perk might not be available to travelers with a membership through certain credit cards.)

Miami International Airport

About 40 minutes away from the Fort Lauderdale cruise port (often longer during rush hour), Miami International Airport (MIA) serves most major airlines, including Alaska, American, Delta, Frontier, JetBlue, Southwest, Spirit, Sun Country Airlines and United.

At MIA, lounge options include an American Airlines Admirals Club and a Flagship Lounge, a Delta Sky Club, an Amex Centurion Lounge for holders of The Platinum Card® from American Express and a Priority Pass lounge called Club America. To get access, you can buy a Priority Pass membership or hold a credit card that offers a membership, such as the Chase Sapphire Reserve® or the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card .

How to get to the Fort Lauderdale cruise port

royal caribbean cruise port hotels

Cruise line transfers

Cruise lines often offer transfers from the airport to the cruise port, but they're usually only available on the day the ship departs. A cruise line transfer wouldn't be an option for guests flying in earlier.

Cruise line transfers are priced per person, so if you're traveling with a group from nearby Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, it would be cheaper to split a taxi or an Uber or Lyft instead.

Transportation from FLL to Port Everglades through Disney Cruise Line, for example, is $45 per person each way. The cruise line doesn't offer transfers from MIA.

Hotel shuttles

Several hotels in the area offer shuttles to the airport for $8 to $15 per person, with select hotels offering complimentary shuttle service to the cruise port.

For more information on hotel options with free or paid shuttles, see the hotel section below.

Independent airport shuttles

Private shuttle companies like Go Airport and South Florida Shuttles offer shared rides from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport to Port Everglades from $15 to $27 per person. Shared shuttles to the Fort Lauderdale port are not typically available from Miami International Airport.

Independent van and car services

Companies like South Florida Elite Shuttle, Fort Lauderdale Airport Shuttle and Go Airport also offer private cars or vans to Port Everglades from both FLL and MIA.

Transportation from nearby FLL ranges from $65 for three people and three pieces of luggage to $105 for up to 10 passengers and 10 bags with Go Airport. Pricing starts upward of $120 from MIA.

Taxis and ride-hailing services

The average taxi fare from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport to Port Everglades is $20. To take a cab from the airport, exit your terminal on the arrivals level and follow the wayfinding signs to the nearest taxi stand.

Ride-hailing services from FLL, like Uber and Lyft, are typically slightly cheaper, often starting as low as $10. This rate can spike during periods of surge pricing, such as when everyone is disembarking the ship and calling for cars at the same time.

If you're heading to the port from Miami International Airport, the taxi fare to Port Everglades can run upward of $100 one-way. Exit baggage claim to find a taxi on the ground arrivals level.

Uber, on the other hand, can start around $55 for UberX, $70 for Comfort and $100 for Uber XL if you need to fit up to six people and more luggage. Pickup zones for ride-hailing services are stationed outside doors 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 11, 15, 20 and 23 on the ground arrivals level. Stand and wait at the middle median.

Public transportation from nearby airports

From FLL : Broward County's Route 1 bus service from the Fort Lauderdale airport stops at the Northport section of Port Everglades on SE 17th Street. The bus stop is located at the Rental Car Center, Stop G, at the airport.

From MIA : You can take the Tri-Rail train from Miami International Airport to the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport station, with free shuttle buses to the airport terminals. Continue on the bus route above to Port Everglades.

Port Everglades cruise port parking

royal caribbean cruise port hotels

On-site parking

Port Everglades has two on-site parking garages and three parking lots providing more than 5,500 parking spaces for cruisegoers.

Heron Parking Garage serves Terminals 2 and 4 (with an air-conditioned elevated passenger bridge on the fifth floor that leads directly to Terminal 2), while Palm Parking Garage serves Terminals 19, 21, 25, 26 and 29 with shuttle service to Terminal 29.

Additionally, Lot A serves Terminals 19 and 26, Lot B serves Terminals 18 and 19, and Lot C serves Terminal 18.

Port Everglades' on-site parking costs $20 per day or $25 for oversized vehicles. If you're parking for less than a day, it's $4 for the first hour and $8 for up to five hours.

Park-and-cruise

Beyond the port, several private parking lots provide shuttle service to the cruise port. One of the cheapest park-and-cruise lot options is Park by the Ports, which offers parking rates starting at $9.99 per day. The shuttle is free for the first four passengers and is only about a 10-minute ride to the port.

Park 'N Go is another reliable option only a few blocks from the port. It has 24-hour staff and free on-demand shuttles to the port that will meet you at your vehicle. This lot starts as low as $10 per day if you reserve online in advance.

With both of these options, reservations are the only way to guarantee yourself a parking spot, but they do accept drive-ups as well.

Tropical Airport Parking is a unique option that lets you park your car at hotels with unused parking spaces. Their prices start at only $7.45 per day, and you must reserve a space in advance. The shuttle to the cruise port costs extra depending on which hotel you choose, so compare the total price to other options when you're deciding where to park.

Various hotels also offer park-and-cruise arrangements where you can keep your car at the hotel for the duration of your cruise if you stay for at least a night. SpringHill Suites Fort Lauderdale Airport & Cruise Port currently offers a hotel package that includes a complimentary round-trip airport shuttle and up to 14 nights of parking for one vehicle (the shuttle to the cruise port is extra).

In other cases, the price for parking is separate from the overnight hotel rate but is usually much cheaper than parking at the cruise port and makes the most sense if you already were planning a precruise hotel stay. Hampton Inn Ft. Lauderdale Airport North Cruise Port and Courtyard Fort Lauderdale Airport & Cruise Port, for example, offer post-checkout parking for hotel guests for only $5 to $10 per night and a paid shuttle to the cruise port.

Restaurants near Port Everglades cruise port

royal caribbean cruise port hotels

Fort Lauderdale's most popular dining destination, Las Olas Boulevard, is known as downtown's main drag of sidewalk cafes, bars, shops and art galleries. You'll find everything from seafood and steakhouses to tacos, burgers and American bar food. A personal favorite is Louie Bossi's Ristorante, a high-energy Italian spot for handcrafted pastas, Neapolitan pizzas and an impromptu round of bocce in the outdoor courtyard.

For the local experience, you might enjoy breakfast on the beach at Casablanca Cafe, a restaurant and piano bar in a restored historic home. If it's lunch or dinnertime before the sun goes down, grab a seafood-centric meal at a waterfront institution along the Intracoastal Waterway, like Coconuts or Boatyard, or head to Boathouse at the Riverside for a view of the New River.

Looking for evening drinks or a morning coffee before boarding your ship? Flagler Village is a trendy neighborhood in a former warehouse district with several local breweries and artisan coffee shops.

Things to do in Fort Lauderdale before or after your cruise

royal caribbean cruise port hotels

Visit the beach

Most visitors to Fort Lauderdale come for the beach, and Fort Lauderdale Beach along state Road A1A is sure to impress — whether you want to soak up some sun from the sand, take a splash in the Atlantic or drive along state Road A1A for views of the ocean right from your car.

About 15 minutes south, you can explore Hollywood Beach, which feels like a small beach town with a 2.5-mile stretch of pedestrian promenade called the Broadwalk. Watch the joggers and cyclists go by, or join in yourself.

Ride the Water Taxi

With an extensive system of canals and waterways, Fort Lauderdale is known as the Venice of America for good reason. The Water Taxi will take you along the Intracoastal Waterway on a route behind some of Fort Lauderdale's most stunning waterfront mansions.

It stops along the way at popular attractions, hotels and waterfront restaurants. Hop off at 15th Street Fisheries or Shooters Waterfront for a classic South Florida seafood meal.

Hit the slots

If you want to continue gambling after your cruise, Broward County is home to a few major casinos that attract tourists and locals alike.

About 15 minutes west of the port in Hollywood, the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino and its adjacent Guitar Hotel feel like two Las Vegas resorts in the middle of South Florida, with a casino connecting the two properties. Across the two music-themed luxury hotels, guests can enjoy the spa, various shops, a lagoon-style pool with cabanas, more than a dozen restaurants and multiple nightclubs, bars and lounges. The Hard Rock Live entertainment venue often hosts concerts and other acts like comedians.

Stay for the nighttime light show from the Guitar Hotel that's choreographed to different songs. Six beams of light project 20,000 feet into the sky, representing the strings of a guitar neck. The Guitar Hotel's grand entrance also features a 35-foot-tall central waterfall called The Oculus with another musical light show that runs every 20 minutes.

Farther south in Hallandale Beach (about 30 minutes from Port Everglades), Gulfstream Park is a horse racing track and casino that's home to equestrian events like the Pegasus World Cup. The complex also has an array of shops, restaurants and entertainment like nightclubs and a karaoke venue.

Shopping near Fort Lauderdale cruise port

If you're looking for last-minute cruise necessities like sunscreen or snacks, visit a pharmacy like Walgreens or CVS near Port Everglades on U.S. Highway 1 or 17th Street Causeway. The Harbor Shops is also a convenient nearby shopping plaza with a Publix Supermarket and a Total Wine if you want to grab a bottle of wine to bring on board.

Las Olas Boulevard is an outdoor shopping and entertainment district with boutique shops, art galleries, sidewalk cafes and bars. It stretches from downtown Fort Lauderdale to the beach on state Road A1A, and it's the perfect place to stroll for the afternoon, shop after you disembark or wander the evening before you board.

For a more traditional shopping mall experience, head to The Galleria at Fort Lauderdale, an upscale shopping center with more than 100 retail shops, including Macy's, Michael Kors, H&M and Free People.

Farther away but a worthwhile destination for bargain hunters, Sawgrass Mills is one of the world's largest outlet malls. The sprawling shopping center with more than 400 shops and restaurants is about a 20- to 30-minute drive from the cruise port.

Royal Caribbean packing list: What to pack for a cruise, Royal Caribbean style

W hether you're new to cruising or someone who's sailed tons of times but hates the prep, packing for a cruise can be a daunting task. There are standard items — including duct tape — that should be a part of any solid cruise packing list .

But what if you want to drill down even further and pack items specific to your brand of choice? We've created this Royal Caribbean packing list to feature everything you need to sail on the line's midsize ships and megaships in the islands and around the world. Here's what to pack for a Royal Caribbean cruise.

For more cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Royal Caribbean cruise packing list at a glance

  • Royal Caribbean International app

Activity-appropriate attire

  • Branded lanyard or luggage tags
  • Drinks and water bottle

Electronics accessories

Comfy clothes, flowrider board, theme party attire, what to pack for a royal caribbean cruise, the royal caribbean international app.

If you want your cruise with Royal Caribbean to be smooth sailing, download the Royal Caribbean International cruise line app on your cellphone. It will allow you to check in for your sailing in advance so you're ready to go on embarkation day. Just provide the required details, upload a photo, link a credit card and choose an embarkation time, and you'll be able to breeze your way on board in a matter of minutes.

After you board and connect to the ship's Wi-Fi , you can use the app to check the daily activity schedule and dining times, message your fellow cruisers, view your onboard bill, and make dining, shore excursion and show reservations.

Even better, since the app is stored on your phone, which we're sure you're planning to pack, it doesn't take up any additional space in your luggage.

A tote bag or small backpack

Whether you plan to be out and about all day in port or roaming the ship in search of your next activity, it helps to have a bag handy to carry things like sunscreen, books and your cellphone.

Given how large Royal Caribbean's ships can be, you'll be glad to have a bag so you don't have to run back and forth to your cabin to grab items you forgot. On the largest Oasis Class vessels and Icon Class ships, it's nearly a quarter-mile walk from bow to stern.

Royal Caribbean is known for innovative attractions you never thought you'd see on a cruise ship. They include carousels, skydiving simulators and bumper cars. If you plan to take part in these activities, make sure you're dressed for success.

For example, onboard zip lines require closed-toe shoes, and you'll need socks for the climbing shoes you'll have to wear to scale your ship's rock climbing wall. Bring long pants and socks if you'd like to lace up your ice skates at Studio B, the ice rink found on many of the line's vessels.

You'll want to pack a one-piece bathing suit or some sort of athletic attire if you're a woman preparing to take on the FlowRider surf simulator . (A crew member told me people in bikinis have about a 50% chance of losing their tops when they fall into the spray.)

A branded lanyard or luggage tags

It's a fact: Many cruisers wear lanyards around their neck to hold their cruise keycards. (It's important not to lose the cards since they double as onboard charge cards and shipboard IDs.) Whether you're going for fashion or function, you can find many styles and colors to meet your needs.

However, perhaps none is as appropriate for a Royal Caribbean voyage as a branded lanyard with the cruise line's logo. Search Etsy for custom Crown & Anchor options to show your shipmates you're loyal to Royal.

Another great way to show off your Royal Caribbean pride is with logo luggage tags for your bags. They're both apropos and functional.

Drinks and a reusable water bottle

If you're looking to save some money on drinks during your next sailing, note that you can bring two bottles of wine or sparkling wine per cabin. There will be a $15 corkage fee per bottle if you choose to enjoy your beverage outside your room, but it's still cheaper than purchasing wine on board — even if you have a drink package.

Royal Caribbean also allows passengers to bring up to 12 cans, plastic bottles or cartons of nonalcoholic drinks onto its ships.

If you buy a drink package, you will receive a special branded travel tumbler for the soda machines on board. If you don't buy a package, you'll want to pack a reusable water bottle or travel mug that you can refill with your favorite beverage.

No one unplugs on cruises anymore; in fact, bringing a variety of tech accessories can actually enhance your cruise.

Start with a non-surge-protected power strip (ones with surge protectors will be confiscated) to increase the number of outlets available to charge your electronic devices in your cabin. These are especially helpful on older ships, which often lack charging outlets and USB ports.

Looking to capture some candids at the beach on Royal Caribbean's private island, Perfect Day at CocoCay , or snag the perfect family photo with the pool deck sunset as a backdrop? Toss a waterproof phone case, selfie stick or GoPro with a gimbal into your bag.

In keeping with the changing preferences of its clientele, Royal Caribbean has largely relaxed its dress code . That means beachwear (by the pools) and resort-casual clothing are the norm during the day. At night, you'll see passengers in everything from jeans and T-shirts or sports jerseys to ball gowns and tuxedos — although the latter is becoming increasingly less common.

In fact, on my last weeklong cruise with Royal Caribbean, we had one formal night and one "dress to impress" night, neither of which was mandatory.

In that vein, pack comfy clothes appropriate for the weather in the destinations you're visiting. (Think: wrinkle-resistant pants , as well as dresses and shirts made from cotton-polyester blends, which are difficult to wrinkle and fold up thin.) Quick-drying fabrics are a great option in hot and humid destinations like the Caribbean and the Bahamas.

Between the burgers, fries and onion rings from Johnny Rockets; greasy but delicious Sorrento's pizza ; and free Mexican fare at El Loco Fresh, you might find yourself experiencing indigestion or heartburn after indulging in comfort food on Royal Caribbean ships.

Toss a small bottle of antacid into your toiletry kit to help ward off any potential discomfort.

One of the most iconic aspects of many Royal Caribbean ships is the FlowRider — a free surf simulator that allows passengers to try their hand at boogie boarding and surfing.

You'll sometimes see the more seasoned surfers bringing their own boards onto the ship when they embark. If you're someone who has tried the FlowRider before and has their own board, why not make it part of your packing list?

Royal Caribbean is well known in the cruise world for its theme parties. You'll find everything from '70s and '80s nights to Caribbean and cowboy themes, as well as a White Night and a club experience called Red, where you might want to dress accordingly.

Unfortunately, Royal Caribbean doesn't list its theme nights before sailing, so pack a little something for each if you want to be prepared.

Cruise Lines to Disclose Hidden Fees When California’s Junk Fee Law Kicks In July 1

Dawit Habtemariam

Dawit Habtemariam , Skift

June 12th, 2024 at 8:15 AM EDT

On July 1, consumers will find out if cruise operators are going to stick with the spirit of California's new junk fee regulation: full price transparency.

Dawit Habtemariam

The world’s largest cruise operators are expected to disclose upfront port and other manadatory fees, as well as taxes, to consumers in the U.S. starting July 1 to comply with California’s junk fee law.

“We are updating the way we display our pricing in the U.S. beginning July 1. Guests booking with Royal Caribbean International and Celebrity Cruises will now see pricing that is inclusive of their selected cruise fare and all required taxes and fees,” said a Royal Caribbean International spokesperson.

And although the law only applies in California, Royal Caribbean, Carnival and Norwegian Cruise are implementing the changes nationwide to simplify their operations and the booking experience.

In October 2023, California Governor Gavin Newsom signed into law a ban on hidden mandatory fees , i.e. junk fees. The law applies to all businesses with offices or customer in the state; it goes into effect on July 1.  Consumers can sue allegedly lawbreaking companies for at least $1,000 in damages.

California is the U.S’s most populated states and one of its most visited. It’s also has the largest economy in the U.S.

A common complaint about junk fees is how companies don’t include mandated charges like port fees, which can go upwards to hundreds of dollars, until the end of the booking process.

“I think the winners are going to be the consumers for sure,” said Judy Perl, founder of Judy Perl Travel, a travel agency.

In addition to Royal Carribbean, Carnival and Norwegian plan to meet the requirements of the the new law.

“To comply with this new law and to simplify the booking experience for all our guests based in the U.S. and Canada, Norwegian Cruise Line will be incorporating applicable government taxes, fees and port expenses into our advertised pricing beginning July 1, 2024,” said a Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings spokesperson.

There won’t be a change in the total price, only a change in the advertising price shown upfront on cruise company channels. “The final price paid does not change, simply the way it is displayed,” said a Carnival Cruise spokesperson.

Cruise’s Growing First-Time Passenger Base

The display update comes as large cruise companies chase “new-to-cruise” guests and upsell more onboard goods and services. “We have been improving our ‘casting of the net’ to go beyond brand repeaters and going into those new to cruising,” said Josh Weinstein, president, CEO and Chief Climate Officer of Carnival Corp., in a first-quarter earnings call .

Demand for cruises has been increasing despite rising prices. In their most recent earnings calls, executives at Carnival and Norwegian Cruise have reported strong bookings.

Russian warships enter Havana Harbor under watch of US destroyers

  • Nora Gámez Torres and Michael Wilner Miami Herald (TNS)

A group of Russian warships that sailed close to Florida shores, closely watched by U.S. destroyers , entered the port of Havana on Wednesday morning ahead of Russian military exercises in the Caribbean.

Cuban Revolutionary Armed Forces officials, including the deputy commander of the Revolutionary Navy of Cuba, Capt. Jose Luis Souto Galindo, the Russian ambassador to Cuba, Victor Koronelli, and a crowd of Russian tourists and curious Cubans gathered at the Malecon, the famous Havana seaside promenade, to watch the Russian missile frigate Admiral Gorshkov enter the port amid a 21-gun salute.

Early on Wednesday, the top of the nuclear-powered submarine Kazan was visible outside Havana’s harbor before it submerged again, Cuban independent media 14ymedio reported.

The official Russian government news agency Tass reported Wednesday that the Kazan, a modern nuclear submarine, is capable of “quietly approaching U.S. shores within 50 km (32 miles) and carrying out assigned combat missions,” according to Mikhail Budnichenko, the head of Sevmash, the company that built it.

Open-source satellite data placed the Russian warships just 26 nautical miles from Key Largo on Tuesday morning.

According to Tass and Interfax, a private Russian news agency, the submarine is equipped with Zircon hypersonic missiles. Zircons travel so fast — a claimed nine times the speed of sound, or close to 7,000 mph — that one could hit the United States in seconds from Havana.

However, it is unclear if the Kazan carried Zircons while visiting Cuba. Cuban authorities have said the Russian combat vessels do not carry nuclear weapons and do not represent a threat to the region’s security.

The presence of the Russian warships in Cuba, just 90 miles from U.S. shores, is seen as a gesture of defiance by Vladimir Putin, who last week warned about taking “asymmetrical” steps and the possibility of sending long-range weapons to third countries to attack Western targets after President Joe Biden allowed Ukraine to use U.S. weapons to strike inside Russia.

Speaking to reporters Wednesday, national security adviser Jake Sullivan said the U.S. government has not seen evidence that Russia is placing in or delivering missiles to Cuba.

“We have not seen anything like that,” he said.

The senior official said Russian ships have also been sailing to Havana under past administrations, though this visit has “elements … that are different, that are distinct,” he said in a reference to the Kazan submarine.

The presence of Russian warships in Cuba is “something we watch closely, carefully,” he added. “We will see how this unfolds in the coming days, but we have seen this kind of thing before.”

The Biden administration has dismissed the Russian naval movements as a messaging tactic in response to U.S. support for Ukraine. But the U.S. Navy nevertheless deployed a powerful flotilla in response, sending three destroyers, a Coast Guard cutter and a maritime surveillance plane to stalk the Russian vessels.

U.S. officials confirmed to McClatchy and the Miami Herald on Tuesday that the U.S. warships were deployed to “ensure the defense of the United States and Canada.”

“Russia’s deployments are part of routine naval activity which pose no direct threat or concern to the United States,” an official with U.S. Northern Command said.

But last year, Air Force Gen. Glen VanHerck, at the time the chief of the U.S. Northern Command, told Congress that the Russian deployment off the U.S. coasts of Yasen-class cruise-missile submarines like the Kazan is causing growing concern.

“Now not only the Atlantic, but we also have them in the Pacific, and it’s just a matter of time — probably a year or two — before that’s a persistent threat, 24 hours a day,” VanHerck told a congressional hearing.

The Cuban military said last week that the Russian fleet, including the oil tanker Pashin and the salvage tug Nikolai Chiker, will stay for a week. A Canadian ship will also dock at the port of Havana on Friday, coinciding with the Russian combat vessels.

U.S. officials said the Russian ships may also make a stop at a Venezuelan port. A Venezuelan ship, the AB Simón Bolívar, will also visit Santiago de Cuba, the island’s second-largest city, between Saturday and June 19.

The Tass news agency said the Russian delegation is headed by Vice Adm. Mikhail Neupokoev, head of the operational department of the Russian navy.

Russia has strengthened its military alliance with Cuba in recent years, with high-ranking military and intelligence officials making frequent visits to Havana. For many years, Russia operated a spy base near Havana in Lourdes, but the facility was dismantled in the early 2000s.

While the Russian ships were entering Cuban waters Wednesday morning, Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez was meeting his Russian counterpart, Sergei Lavrov, in Moscow. The two men vowed to continue supporting each other’s agenda but did not mention the ships’ arrival in Havana.

Why are Russian warships in Cuba?

Russian warships sailed into Cuba’s main harbour in what appears to be a show of strength by Moscow amid heightened tensions with the US.

Russian warship in Cuba

On Wednesday, dozens of Havana residents gathered and watched as Russian warships sailed into Cuba’s main harbour – in the latest display of naval strength by Moscow amid heightened tensions with the United States.

The Caribbean nation is a neighbour of the US, which at its closest point, is just about 150 kilometres (94 miles) away, but have had tense relations for decades.

Rare protests in cuba over ‘power and food’, us opens up banking to private cuban businesses to boost small firms, russian navy vessels to dock in havana, cuba insists no threat, russian navy fleet, including frigate, nuclear-powered sub, arrives in cuba.

While it is not the first time Russian navy ships have visited Cuba, this convoy appears to be the largest in several years. The fleet is expected to stay between June 12 and 17 and the public will be allowed to take tours of the vessels.

Here’s what we know about why Russia has sent ships to Cuba now, how far back Russian-Cuban ties go, and why the two have gotten closer in the past year:

people take photos

Why are the warships in Havana?

The flotilla is part of a “friendly” routine visit between the two countries’ navies, Cuban officials have said. The crew on board are expected to conduct military training exercises during their time in the Caribbean.

But analysts have said Moscow’s move is largely calculated to flex naval muscle in the US’s back yard. The detachment comes after escalating tensions between Russia and the US, following President Joe Biden’s decision in May to allow Ukraine to attack Russian targets with American weapons.

Russian President Putin has promised retaliation against not only the US, but also other Western allies of Ukraine who also removed restrictions on using their weapons against Moscow.

“That would mark their direct involvement in the war against the Russian Federation, and we reserve the right to act the same way,” Putin said last week, adding that Moscow was ready to use nuclear weapons.

Benjamin Gedan, director of the Latin America programme at the Washington, DC-based Wilson Center think tank, told The Associated Press news agency that “the warships are a reminder to Washington that it is unpleasant when an adversary meddles in your [neighbourhood].”

The naval show-off is also meant to reassure Moscow’s Latin American allies – Cuba and Venezuela, of its continued support for them against Washington, some experts said.

Like Russia and Cuba, economically ravaged Venezuela has unpleasant relations with the US and is under American sanctions.

Admiral Gorshkov

What ships did Russia deploy and how much of a threat are they?

The Russian fleet includes four vehicles in total.

  • Admiral Gorshkov: is the lead ship in the convoy. The frigate – that is, a warship that is light to steer and can be easily manoeuvred – is one of the Russian navy’s most modern models. It is capable of carrying out long-range missile attacks and anti-submarine warfare while being difficult to spot with radars because of the use of stealth technology. The ship is equipped with Zircon hypersonic missiles, which Putin has in the past said can fly nine times faster than the speed of sound at a range of more than 1,000km (more than 620 miles). It also carries Kalibr and Oniks cruise missiles.
  • Kazan: is a nuclear-powered submarine and houses a nuclear reactor. The vehicle is also believed to be equipped with missiles from the Kalibr and Oniks families.
  • Pashin – the fleet’s oil tanker, and a rescue tugboat – Nikolai Chiker – complete the convoy as support vehicles.

INTERACTIVE Cuba United States distance map-1718263915

How has the US responded?

US officials are publicly downplaying the deployment, and say it is part of usual port-calls between Russia and Cuba.

White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan told reporters on Wednesday that such naval exercises were routine and that there were no signs Moscow was transferring missiles to Havana.

Last July, Perekop – a Russian training ship equipped with anti-aircraft guns and a rocket launcher – was on a four-day visit to Havana and conducted “a range of activities” according to Cuban officials. The Admiral itself visited in 2019.

“We have seen this kind of thing before, and we expect to see this kind of thing again, and I’m not going to read into it any particular motives,” Sullivan said, adding that the US would remain vigilant.

The US deployed ships and planes that monitored the movement of the fleet even before it arrived in Cuba and assessed there were no nuclear weapons on board, officials speaking to US media said, noting that the fleet stayed in international waters throughout.

Sailors from Russia in Cuba

What are Cuba and Russia saying?

Russia’s Defence Ministry said on Tuesday that the fleet had conducted drills in the Atlantic while on the way to Cuba.

The Russian crew practised using high-precision missile weapons with the aid of computer-simulated enemy ship targets located at a distance of more than 600km (more than 320 nautical miles), according to the ministry.

Meanwhile, the Cuban Foreign Ministry, before the fleet’s arrival, stressed that none of the warships would carry nuclear weapons and added that their presence “does not represent a threat to the region”.

“Visits by naval units from other countries are a historical practice of the revolutionary government with nations that maintain relations of friendship and collaboration,” the ministry said in a statement.

Is this a replay of 1962?

Both Russia and Cuba have long been united in their opposition to the US. During the Cold War, their ties deepened intensely, as the then-Soviet Union befriended the ideologically aligned Havana. Moscow provided financial aid, military equipment, and naval training, boosting the country’s military might in the Caribbean.

Things came to a head in 1962 when Moscow transferred nuclear weapons to Cuba, prompting a response from the US, which imposed a naval blockade on Havana in response. That tense episode is now known as the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962.

The fall of the Soviet Union saw Cuba lose a major economic partner and fall into economic depression. But in recent years, the countries’ cooperation has again deepened.

Analysts have said this week’s naval show-off marked that intensifying relationship, but noted that it does not necessarily mean a rehash of events in 1962. Rather, Cuba, in particular, is again drawn to Russia for economic reasons, rather than ideology.

Cuba missile crisis

How have their economic ties deepened in the past year?

In the longest-lasting trade sanctions in modern history, the US has since 1958 banned American entities from trading with Cuba – following Fidel Castro’s overthrow of a US-backed government in Havana.

Although the sanctions have been eased at different times, they have largely remained over the years. In 2015, US President Barack Obama decided to restore diplomatic ties with Cuba after 50 years, but his successor Donald Trump reversed course nearly four years later.

That has partly contributed to a continuing economic crisis in the Caribbean country – alongside shaky government economic policies – analysts said.

“The blockade qualifies as a crime of genocide,” Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez Parrilla said at a UN General Assembly meeting in November, referring to the US sanctions.

Deteriorating public services, regular power cuts, food and fuel shortages, and high inflation have pushed Cuba into its worst economic crisis in decades.

In recent years, Cuba has again turned to Russia, aiming to draw foreign investors. The two countries, last May, kicked off a series of economic partnerships, including one that will allow Russian businesses to lease Cuban land for 30 years – an unusual move in the largely closed-off country.

Bilateral trade between Cuba and Russia reached $450m in 2022, three times that of 2021, Russian officials said. About 90 percent of the trade comprised sales of petroleum products and soy oil, as Russia pumps in badly needed fuel to the country.

Ricardo Cabrisas, Cuba’s former minister of foreign commerce, told reporters on the sidelines of a business forum hosting Russian investors in Havana last May that the economic ties between Russia and Cuba would only grow stronger.

“Nothing and no one can stop it,” Cabrisas said.

Russian sub deployment off Florida worries Pentagon that Moscow will stalk U.S. coasts

WASHINGTON — Russia’s deployment of a naval flotilla to Cuba on Wednesday was generally consistent with routine military posturing by Moscow — with one exceptional detail, Jake Sullivan, the U.S. national security adviser, told reporters aboard Air Force One on Wednesday.

“There are elements of this one that are different, that are distinct,” he said. “They have a submarine associated with this port visit that they have not had before.”

The first deployment of a nuclear submarine to Cuba since the end of the Cold War has served not only as a message to the Biden administration of Moscow’s displeasure with continued U.S. support for Ukraine, but also of its increasing ability to stalk U.S. coastlines with stealth submersibles — a growing concern for the U.S. military, multiple officials familiar with the matter told McClatchy and the Miami Herald.

Just last month, the head of the U.S. Northern Command warned Congress that Moscow could soon deploy 12 similarly advanced nuclear submarines split evenly between the Pacific and Atlantic, creating a “persistent conventional threat” to the United States.

“The threat will only become more acute later in the decade,” Air Force Gen. Gregory Guillot said, once the Yasen-class submarines are regularly armed with hypersonic missiles capable of traveling many times the speed of sound.

U.S. officials are now assessing whether the current Russian deployment, which will culminate in military exercises in the Caribbean, could be the beginning of a pattern of Russian submarine activity that will require a more sustained change in U.S. force posture.

The Kazan, a Yasen-class sub, joined three other Russian combat vessels that U.S. officials characterized as routine visitors to Cuba’s shores.

The deployment is “something we watch closely, carefully,” Sullivan said.

‘They will definitely lose her’

As the Kazan breached the waters of the port of Havana on Wednesday, Russian state media reported that the vessel had demonstrated it is “capable of quietly approaching U.S. shores” within 50 kilometers, or about 30 miles. U.S. officials acknowledged to McClatchy on Tuesday that the Russian fleet had skirted the coast of Florida by a similar distance on its approach to Cuba.

“If she wants to hide, they will definitely lose her, she will break away,” said Mikhail Budnichenko, director of the submarine program, as quoted by TASS, a Russian state-run media organization. “This is a very secretive ship, this is the latest achievement of Russian science and technology.”

The Kazan, a nuclear-powered vessel capable of carrying and firing nuclear cruise missiles, is a state-of-the-art submersible that is part of a newly designed fleet intended to replace Russia’s aging Soviet-era nuclear submarines.

A U.S. official told McClatchy and the Herald that U.S. military assets never lost track of the Kazan on its approach to Havana. McClatchy confirmed on Tuesday that the U.S. Northern Command had dispatched three guided-missile destroyers — the USS Truxtun, USS Donald Cook and USS Delbert D. Black — as well as a Coast Guard cutter and a Boeing P-8 maritime patrol aircraft to patrol the Russian military movements.
