From Interstate 5 (Los Angeles and Orange County), take the Pershing Drive exit and follow the signs. From Interstate 15 (Escondido and Riverside), take State Route 163 south to the Park Blvd./I-5 South exit. Exit at Park Blvd. Turn left on Park Blvd. and head north; Zoo parking entrance is off Park Blvd. at Zoo Place.

From Interstate 5 (Mexico), take the State Route 163 north exit, then the Zoo/Museums (Richmond Street) exit and follow the signs to the Zoo parking lot.

From State Route 94, proceed into downtown San Diego to 11th Avenue. Turn right on 11th Avenue and proceed north to A Street. Turn right on A Street, and then make a quick left onto Park Blvd. and head north; Zoo parking entrance is off Park Blvd. at Zoo Place.

Parking is free in the lot in front of the Zoo. Additional free parking is available throughout Balboa Park. For your convenience, the Zoo is offering additional free parking at the Inspiration Point parking lot (located at Park Blvd. and Presidents Way, just 5 minutes south of the zoo).

Ride our FREE SHUTTLE directly to the Zoo entrance from the Inspiration Point parking lot at Presidents Way. Our shuttle will run from 11:00am to 9:00pm weekends beginning May 25 through September 1 (except 6/15/24).

It’s easy to get here on public transit. Rapid 215 and Route 7 stop at the Zoo and are an easy connection in downtown from Amtrak and COASTER trains at the Santa Fe Depot, downtown hotels, the Cruise Ship Terminal, Blue, Orange, and Green Line Trolleys and other MTS bus routes. Guests with Disabilities

The San Diego Zoo welcomes all guests. We have several services to help our guests with disabilities enjoy their visit. The Zoo provides dedicated parking, restrooms, and access to experiences, tour buses, and habitat areas for guests with disabilities. Please note there are steep grades in parts of the Zoo.

Our ADA shuttle service is available on an on-call basis for our guests with mobility-related disabilities and can accommodate all standard wheelchairs and the types of electronic conveyance vehicles (ECVs) allowed on grounds.

Contact any Zoo team member or volunteer to request service and get directions to the nearest pickup location. Space is limited and reserved for those who need it most. Guests who use mobility assistive devices may also refer to the Zoo map for ADA pathways and elevators.

• We analyzed 2,494 park reviews on the SafariBookings.com website, which included 1,380 contributions by safari tourists from 107 countries, as well as 1,114 reviews written by our international team of safari experts.
• In total 200 parks from 15 countries, consisting of Botswana, Eswatini (formerly Swaziland), Ethiopia, Kenya, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Rwanda, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe, were included in the study.
• Only parks recognized for classic wildlife-viewing safaris were considered. Parks mostly known for scenery or gorilla/chimp tracking (and not other wildlife) were not included.
• Parks with less than 10 reviews were excluded from the Top 50.
• Serengeti National Park in Tanzania was the clear winner with a 4.87 overall rating. This was the fourth time running that the Serengeti has come out on top, after placing first in 2015, 2018 and 2019. Driving the Serengeti’s popularity is the park’s spectacular wildlife (including the abundance of predators and the wildebeest migration), for which it was ranked highly by travelers and experts alike.
• South Africa’s Sabi Sand Private Game Reserve came in second with an overall rating of 4.71 out of 5. Ranked ninth in 2019, it jumped all the way to second place this year, roaring into the top three. Confirmation that Sabi Sands belongs in such elite company comes from the fact that both travelers and experts gave it 5 out of 5 for wildlife, and a higher overall ranking than they did in the previous survey.
• Coming in third was South Luangwa National Park in Zambia, rising from a respectable seventh last time around. It may receive fewer visitors than other, better-known parks, but it gets top marks from both travelers and safari experts.
• Tanzania had the highest number of entries in the Top 10, with three parks: Serengeti National Park, Ngorongoro Crater and Ruaha National Park. Botswana was close behind with two and a half parks: Okavango Delta, Moremi Game Reserve and Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park (which Botswana shares with South Africa).
• Kenya may have only one entry, Masai Mara National Reserve, in the Top 10, but it had more parks and reserves in the Top 50 (12) than any other country. South Africa had the second most entries with 11, down from 14 in the last survey. Tanzania (eight), Botswana (six) and Uganda (four) were next. For the first time in 2024, Malawi had an entry in the Top 50 with Liwonde National Park at number 20.
• Birders have clearly taken a liking to Kenya’s Kakamega Forest National Reserve: both safari travelers and experts ranked Kakamega in first place for bird watching.
• One of the biggest surprises was Mana Pools National Park in Zimbabwe. Ranked second in 2019, it fell dramatically to 27th. But safari travelers have remained loyal to the park, giving it the maximum score of 5 out of 5 in the categories of wildlife, bush vibe and birding.
• Travelers aged between 20 and 35 decided that their favorite park was Kenya’s Masai Mara National Reserve, followed closely by Tanzania’s Serengeti. For more mature age groups, the top ranking went to Namibia’s Etosha National Park (ages 35 to 50) and South Africa’s Sabi Sand Private Game Reserve (ages 50 to 65).
• Botswana’s Chobe National Park and Uganda’s Murchison Falls National Park ranked highly for safari travelers who have been on more than one safari. And when it comes to wilderness, Botswana’s Okavango Delta deservedly came out on top in the bush vibe category for those who have been on five or more safaris.

Paid safaris at San Diego Safari Park are nice but unnecessary because the 30-minute Africa Tram Safari is already included with this ticket.

Infants up to two years can enter the park for free.

San Diego Zoo is San Diego Safari Park’s sister, located 56 km (35 miles) away.

The travel time between the two wildlife destinations is approximately 45 minutes. 

This combo ticket is popular amongst tourists who love wildlife and are in the region for at least two days. 

This ticket helps you save 20% on the ticket costs and gets you one entry into the San Diego Zoo’s Safari Park and San Diego Zoo.

You can visit the same attraction twice if you don’t want to try the second location.

If you prefer to view animals in a not-so-open environment (which is far more convenient for visitors), opt for the 1-day San Diego Zoo ticket .

Active military professionals can enter the zoo for free by showing their ID. Their dependents qualify for a 10% price reduction. 

San Diego Zoo offers a 15% discount on the ticket price to seniors (65+ years) and students (12+ years) with valid photo ID cards. 

However, the Military, Seniors, and Student discounts can only be availed at the ticket window.

The San Diego Safari Park in the San Pasqual Valley area of San Diego, California, near Escondido.

It is 56 km (35 miles) northeast of the San Diego Zoo near Balboa Park in San Diego.

Depending on the time of the day, it takes 45 to 60 minutes to travel from the Zoo to Safari Park.

You can reach the park by car or public transportation.

The nearest bus stop Highway 78 & Safari Park Outside Gat e is 1.2 km (0.8 miles) from the park. Board the bus 371 to reach the nearest bus stop and take a cab to get to the Safari Park.

Amtrack Railway Service is a better option if you plan to visit a wildlife attraction from another city, such as Los Angeles.

At 43 km (27 miles), Oceanside Amtrak Station is the closest station to San Diego Safari Park. 

From Oceanside, you must board the light rail service called Sprinter to get to Escondido. 

After 53 minutes and 14 stops, you must get down at Escondido Transit Center .

From Escondido Transit Center, you can take a taxi.

If you wish to travel by car, turn on Google Maps and get started.

The San Diego Zoo Safari Park’s general parking costs US$20 per day. 

Preferred parking (a spot closer to the Safari entrance) is US$18 extra, which means you pay US$38 for parking your vehicle. 

Credit cards, debit cards, or cash are accepted. 

There are numerous parking garages around the safari park.

San Diego Zoo Safari Park, including holidays, opens at 9 am throughout the year. 

During the summer months of April to August, when the park gets lots of visitors, it closes at 7 pm, and the rest of the year, at 5 pm. 

Visitors need at least four to five hours to explore San Diego Zoo Safari Park to satisfaction. 

If you plan to explore the bare minimum – walk in, go on the Africa Tram at the Safari Park, and step out – you need around 90 minutes.

Some visitors wonder if they can shorten their visit by driving through the safari park. 

Unfortunately, that’s impossible because San Diego Zoo Safari Park is a walk-through sanctuary.

Note: During peak summer months, the queue for the Tram ride can be long, leading to longer waits. 

It is best to visit San Diego Zoo Safari Park when it opens at 9 am because the animals are most active during the first half of the day. 

As the day gets hotter, animals tend to look for shade.

Heat can also affect your experience at the Safari Park, so a fair-weather day is recommended.

On Weekdays, expect the longest lines at San Diego Safari Park between 11 am and 1 pm; on weekends, it is between 11 am and 3 pm. 

However, the crowd doesn’t affect your experience if you purchase your tickets in advance. 

San Diego Safari Park is most crowded from June to August and during school vacations. 

Best time of the year

The best time of the year to visit San Diego Zoo Safari Park is spring – from mid-March to mid-June. This is also known as the birthing season. 

The park sets up nursery exhibits where you can see baby animals take their first steps into the wild. 

Tourists on a budget holiday tend to compare San Diego Zoo and Safari Park and then decide where to go.

Seniors free days

Adults 65 and older can visit San Diego Zoo Safari Park for free throughout February. 

Kids free days

In October, every child aged three to 11 years gets free admission to San Diego Safari Park as long as a paying adult accompanies them. 

Only kids aged 12 and above need to purchase tickets this month. 

The animals at San Diego Safari Park are divided into 11 primary areas, which you can walk around and explore.

You can interact with the wildlife at the Park in many exciting ways.

The Africa Safari is a 30-minute guided tour on an open-air tram.

The tram takes a 4 km (2.5 miles) long route through San Diego Zoo Safari Park’s field habitats, and visitors get to wild animals such as giraffes, rhinos, elephants, antelopes, etc.

African Tram Safaris start from the African Outpost, a 20-minute walk from the attraction entrance. 

The Tram trips start at 10 am and continue till 45 minutes before the park closes. 

The African Tram Safari is free with the regular San Diego Safari Park ticket .

To avoid waiting in queue to board the safari tram, be at the African Outpost in San Diego Safari Park before 11 or after 3 pm. 

At 11.45 am, the Tiger Keepers at San Diego Safari Park conduct a training session with the animals at the Sambutan Longhouse. 

This keeper talk is a fantastic opportunity to meet the San Diego Safari Park’s tigers up close. 

Since the talk is popular, plan to arrive at least 20 minutes early for the 15 minutes long Tiger Keeper Talk. 

The majestic animal gets a brief physical visual examination by their caretakers and lots of treats. 

The San Diego Safari Park Animal Ambassador Stage is an open platform for showcasing different animals. 

Visitors get a chance to get within a couple of feet of animals that aren’t available in an exhibit. 

The stage is at Safari Base Camp close to the park entrance, and there are two shows daily – first at noon and the last at 4 pm. 

If you are lucky, you may interact with the massive python ‘Julius Squeezer,’ cheetah, Kestrel hawks, or the high-jumping servals and caracals.

At the Nairobi Station, visitors get close-up views of some of the smaller animals at San Diego Safari Park.

Don’t miss out on Robert, the safari’s interactive digital zebra.

The Animal Care Center houses the baby animals and is also at Nairobi Station.

Expect some waiting time when baby lions or cheetahs are cared for at the center. 

Petting Kraal

Open from 10 am to 4.45 pm, the Petting Kraal is an excellent opportunity for your kids to interact with the Safari Park’s friendly goats.

Kids can feed the Pygmy, Nubian, and Boer goats and have fun. 

At Lorikeet Landing, visitors can engage with a colorful rainbow of parrots from 10 am to 3.45 pm.

The entrance to the exhibition is free, but the nectar you feed the parrots is for sale. 

A small bowl of nectar can get these parrots to land on you and make for beautiful, funny photographs. 

At Lemur Walk, open from 9 am to the Safari Park’s closing time, visitors get to spend time with the Lemurs. 

You walk along a path inside the habitat as ring-tailed lemurs hang around in the trees or walk with you. 

Only visitors over five years of age are allowed. 

The 20-minute Frequent Flyers Bird Show at San Diego Safari Park is scheduled twice daily – at 12 noon and 2 pm. 

The exciting show is perfect for a quick break mid-way through exploring the park. 

Visitors see exotic birds like owls, parrots, and large vultures flying just inches above your head. 

The Training Talk happens in the amphitheater between Gorilla Forest and African Woods.

It is an opportunity to get a closer look at free-flight bird training as the birds prepare for the famous Frequent Flyers show. 

Most people ignore this show, which means you can get the front seat row. 

Shiley’s Cheetah Run

San Diego Zoo Safari Park’s Cheetah Run is held once a day, at 3.30 pm.

You see an agile Cheetah run down a 100-meter (330-foot) long track and reach its top speed of nearly 112 km (70 miles) per hour.

It is better to be at the spot 15 minutes earlier because it is a massive hit with visitors.

Safari Park Gardens

If you love greenery, check out Safari Park’s World Gardens, which has thousands of plants representing geographical areas worldwide. 

Our favorite gardens are Baja Garden, Old World Succulent Garden, Epiphyllum Trail, Bonsai Pavilion, and California Nativescapes Garden.

Conservation Carousel

The Conservation Carousel is at the Safari Base Camp and costs US$6 per person for an all-day bracelet.

It is a good entertainment option for kids, with 60 reproductions of rare or endangered animals that rotate around an axis. 

Kids can choose their favorite animals, such as giraffes, rhinos, zebras, cheetahs, etc., to ride on. 

It is open from 10 am until the Safari Park closes. 

San Diego Zoo Safari Park is very kid-friendly, and more than half of the visitors on any given day are children.

Besides the animal exhibits, which are always a hit, many activities and experiences are designed for children. 

Village Playground

The Village Playground is designed like an African village, next to the Petting Kraal in Nairobi Village.

The interactive play area is open from 9 am onwards. 

Savanna Cool Zone

Located in the Lion Camp, this is an excellent way for your family to beat the heat. 

The kids can have a wet and wild time even as you relax in the shade with snacks.

Kids love the play statues shaped like lions and tortoises with water squirting from their heads. 

Samburu Jungle Gym

This is a hit for kids and adults, located below the Benbough Amphitheater in the African Woods. 

Children love climbing up and exploring in this safari-themed play area, even as the parents put their feet up in the shade at Samburu Terrace and keep an eye on them. 

Tiger Trail Play Area

Also known as the Camp Play area, this spot is part of the lush wooded landscape of Tiger Trail. 

Children love climbing, sliding, and running on tree trunks in a simulated logging camp. 

Besides this, kids also love Petting Kraal and Conservation Carousel, which are paid activities.

Stroller Rentals for kids: San Diego Zoo Safari Park offers strollers for rent on a first-come, first-serve basis. The daily charge for a single stroller is US$16, and a double stroller is US$20. 

Because of some odd zoning rules, the Safari Park is in San Diego, referred to as the San Diego Safari Park.

However, Safari Park’s geographical location is Escondido.

Escondido is around 32 km (20 miles) inland and usually 5 to 7 degrees Celcius (10 to 14 Fahrenheit) warmer than oceanfront San Diego.

Since the Safari Park is an outdoor attraction, it makes sense to dress up in layers during your visit. 

The weather gets warmer as the day progresses.

No. 10: Safari West - Santa Rosa, Calif.

A bit of Africa in the heart of California’s wine country, AZA-accredited  Safari West  welcomes guests to the “Sonoma Serengeti,” where a 3-hour riding and walking adventure takes them through the 400-acre preserve. Giraffes, zebras, oryx, gazelle, antelopes, buffalo, wildebeest and many other species number among the 1,000 animals that call the park home. For an even more in-depth safari experience, visitors can choose to stay the night in a luxurious safari tent and fall asleep to the sounds of nocturnal animals.

No. 9: Wildlife Safari - Winston, Ore.

Wildlife Safari, an Oregon wildlife park accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, is home to some 500 animals, many visible along the park’s drive-through safari route or the walk-through Safari Village. Wildlife Safari has long been a leader in conservation as well; their cheetah breeding program launched in 1972, and since then, more than 200 cheetahs have been born at the park.

Local News | Jurassic movie vehicles coming to African Safari Wildlife Park on June 9

The vehicles that appeared on the big screen will be there from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., June 9, the release said.

The Motor Pool will showcase more than a dozen Jeeps and other vehicles for Park guests to view up close and take pictures with, according to the release.

The event coincides with this summer’s Dinosaur Takeover, a temporary installation featuring more than 20 moving, roaring, life-sized prehistoric creatures throughout the Park’s Walk-Thru Safari, the release said.

“Our guests can’t seem to get enough of dinosaurs, so we are eager to partner with the Motor Pool and bring even more prehistoric excitement to the Park,” said Park director Kelsey Keller, in the release.

Access to this event is included with general Park admission, according to the release

Across the street, Thundering Surf Waterpark has six large slides, a lazy river, racing slides, a toddler splash area, a Flow Rider surfing simulator, and a kids splash area with a tipping bucket that dumps water on innocent bystanders (also fun for adults!).

Jenkinson's Amusement Park, Point Pleasant Beach

Being on the Jenkinson's Boardwalk is fun for parents, with iconic watering holes like Martell's Tiki Bar. But it's also a wonderland for children, thanks to beautiful beaches, an aquarium, Jenkinson's Sweet Shop and an amusement park.

Jenkinson's offers an array of rides including airplanes, bumper cars, boats, a carousel and the spinning Dizzy Dragons. Most of the attractions are aimed toward younger kids, but some of rides — the Ferris wheel, Pendolo (a spinning swinging ride), Pirate's Plunge and Starship 3000 — are fun for teens and adults, too.

Keansburg Amusement Park and Runaway Rapids Waterpark, Keansburg

Just steps away from the beach, boasting beautiful bay views, is Keansburg Amusement Park. The surrounding town, which has earned a name for itself with new restaurants, a boardwalk, ample fishing piers, bars and more, makes this destination fun for the whole family.

The park, which was established in 1904, has carnival-style rides like the Frog Hopper, Pharaoh's Fury (a swinging boat ride much like Fantasy Island's Sea Dragon), Moby Dick and the spinning Gravitron (don't go on a full stomach!). There are plenty of exciting rides for little kids, too, including tea cups, the Sea Serpent roller coaster, a carousel and the Log Flume.

The park's go karts are a must, and don't miss nearby Runaway Rapids with water slides, a lazy river and splash zones.

Six Flags Great Adventure, Hurricane Harbor and Wild Safari, Jackson

This park attracts visitors from all over the world, considering it's home to Kingda Ka, the globe's tallest roller coaster and the fastest in North America.

Along with other coasters like Medusa and Batman, the park houses Hurricane Harbor waterpark, with water slides like the Big Wave Racer, as well as calmer attractions like Blue Lagoon and the kid-friendly Calypso Springs.

Also on the property is the drive-through Wild Safari Adventure, with animals from nearly every continent including bison, rhea and llama from America; elephants, white rhinos and Grant's zebras from Africa; and Asian wildcats like Bengal and Siberian tigers.

The camping season at the former Port Huron Township campground is already underway, but its new owners said the property has plenty of new features — such as safari tents and deluxe cabins — and future amenities in the works for visitors.

Ahead of an open house set for noon to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Dancing Fire Glamping and RV Resort proprietors Steve and Karen Ureel toured the evolving site, 2301 Water St., last week with Charlynn Grace, a regional vice president for Parkbridge Investment Group.

Although they were past the second year owning the site — Parkbridge purchased the site from the township in 2022 — Steve Ureel, the group’s principal, said they didn’t plan to host an official grand opening until next year when large amenities like a clubhouse, a yoga and wellness room, and pool are completed.

For now, they said they were hoping to help get people acquainted with the changes with an aim to cater to groups and families and provide an alternative to campers who didn’t want to pitch a tent or haul an RV.

“We have some glamping units from last year that we opened up, and that was two airstreams, a bus, and a ‘little gem’ camper,” Grace said Thursday — seated with the Ureels on the porch of one safari tent. Nearby, plenty of RVs and trailers were parked with active campers with the traditional season having kicked off April 15.

Grace admitted the tents were her favorite — each with a theme, their own fire pit and grill, and situated in a semi-circle around a community fire pit.

“For this year, obviously, the new glamping units that we have are the tents — or safari tents, I should say — the deluxe cabins, and the cottages. Those are our new amenities or the glamping-type style units,” she said. “So, we’re offering the 25% (off) only on the new glamping units. These three options. Later in the season, we’ll have A-frames. Those will be 25% when we open them, as well.”

What are the details on available campsites this season?

There are five safari tents and deluxe cabins inside the campground. They similarly feature separate bedrooms or spaces with bunks for kids, though they target different campers.

Steve said the cabins were aimed to be vamped up from traditional KOA cabins for smaller groups — with a splash of color among indoor decorative features, as designed by Karen — while the tents could house larger groups and gatherings.

And unlike normal tents, the safari units are equipped with air conditioning control units. Karen Ureel noted the view of the tents alongside the woods, calling it beautiful and “Instagram-worthy.”

Those are expected to be available for reservations June 14. The airstreams installed last year are already available.

Four colorful cottages have also been erected near the entrance of Dancing Fire.

Slated to be a gated area, Steve Ureel said they were playing with the idea of making the cottages available for purchase, so private owners could own the facility and rent a seasonal site. There’s also four more spots that could include future cottages, depending on demand.

“So, in general, all of our cabins. We have different price points. The cottages are certainly high-end. That’s a higher price point,” Steve Ureel said. “The next price point is the tents. So, these are ideal— primarily, these are set up for a community gathering. So, family reunions, girls’ weekends off, we’re going to have a high emphasis on overnight groups. You can rent one tent, or you can bring your whole group and rent them all. … But two large tents for families. The three smaller ones are geared for a couple with maybe two kids.”

What about amenities down the road?

Additionally, as referenced by Grace, several A-frame park model-style, heavily-windowed pods are on site and designed to be stilted on a slope farther into the woods with a view at the back of the property. Steve said those should be available in August.

While bigger amenities like the clubhouse won’t be ready for campers until next season, smaller amenities, he said, are in place already. Those include a dog run and pickleball court, which awaits fencing. There’s also an existing playground for kids on site.

There was a big emphasis last winter on upgrading 152 regular campsites with full-service water, sewer, and electric access. Steve called it their “heavy lift,” getting new infrastructure in the ground.

Sometime later in the 2025 season, Grace said they hoped to get a bike rental and kayak launch set up.

And next to the A-frame pods, Steve said they have space where they’d like to design treehouses down the road.
