Review of a Premium View Room at the Disneyland Hotel

The OG of all Disney resort hotels, the Disneyland Hotel at the Disneyland Resort offers guests a taste of history, a prime location, and all the modern luxuries and conveniences!

safari room disneyland hotel

Upon check-in, she was assigned Room 2764 located on the 9th floor of the Adventure Tower.

safari room disneyland hotel

This particular room was a Pool View/Premium View; and for two nights, plus two Park Hopper Tickets for an adult and child and Genie+ for both days, the grand total was $1,931.92.

safari room disneyland hotel

Not gonna lie, as Walt Disney World locals, we’re definitely envious of the monorail pool slides! However, it is worth noting that the third resort tower is currently under construction.

safari room disneyland hotel

The bedroom space measured 14 ft. x 14 ft. and had 1 king bed complete with a magical, musical headboard!

safari room disneyland hotel

Seriously, this headboard has firework lights to give your kiddo sweet dreams after a long day in the parks. But be warned, while you may tire of this pixie-dusted detail after the 35th time, your child won’t. Ever.

safari room disneyland hotel

What you, the adult, will truly appreciate is, apart from the 3-bedroom Grand Villa at the Riviera Resort, this bed was THE MOST comfortable Chrissy has ever slept on at any Disney Resort!

safari room disneyland hotel

In addition to nightstands on both sides of this super comfy bed, the room’s furnishings consisted of a comfy chair and reading lamp, as well as…

safari room disneyland hotel

…a dresser and TV, another floor lamp, a desk and chair, and a table-top lamp complete with an always appreciated Hidden Mickey.

safari room disneyland hotel

The dresser under the TV served several purposes. In addition to drawers and storage space, this is where Chrissy found the ice bucket, plastic cups, and coffee maker, and behind the cabinet door is where the mini-fridge was stored.

safari room disneyland hotel

Now, let’s get to the rest of the room, shall we?

The hallway (note the firework-inspired carpet!) measured 15 ft. long by 3 ft. 5 in. wide.

safari room disneyland hotel

It’s also worth pointing out that, unlike most guest room bathrooms at Disney World Resort hotels, there is no water closet or anything separating the vanity from the rest of the bathroom.

safari room disneyland hotel

Overall, the bathroom measured 7 ft. long by 5 ft. 2 in. wide (not including the tub).

Focusing on the vanity space, multiple outlets are always appreciated, as was the free toiletries! No mounted pumps here.

safari room disneyland hotel

The Mickey glove sconces were a nice touch…

safari room disneyland hotel

…and so was the Mickey-shaped faucet handle!

safari room disneyland hotel

Under the sink, there was plenty of space for storage, towels, and the room’s hairdryer.

safari room disneyland hotel

Here’s a closer look at the tub and shower combo.

safari room disneyland hotel

There was a Mickey-shaped faucet here too!

So that’s a tour of Room 2764 at the Disneyland Hotel during a visit to the happiest place on Earth!

6 thoughts on “ Review of a Premium View Room at the Disneyland Hotel ”

The Disneyland Hotel lost all worth and value years ago. While the accents are nice and some new features like the BTMR display are stunning, the DLH is simply one of thousands of examples of how Disney is charging tons more for offering lots less.

The DLH is still nothing more than a glorified Holiday Inn. It’s location is NOT spectacular. It’s still a longer walk to the front gate than many motels across the street. If you use the monorail (Assuming it’s running), be prepared to be line up at least 30-45 minutes early to snag a seat on the first train. But because train’s leave precisely at park opening, you’re going to be at least 10 minutes behind the people at rope drop at the front gate. So no real advantage to location.

Views? The blue cocoon they wrap you in is horrible. Gone are the balconies that gave you a real view and fresh air. But who cares about the views now? Downtown Disney is a construction zone, as is the area behind the old Bonita Tower. The Fantasy tower overlooks the pool on one side and parking lot on the other, though you can catch glimpse of the fireworks from here (though, again, better when you had the balcony).

Also gone are the beautiful features that made the hotel a destination unto itself years ago: the many restaurants and shops, koi fish, waterfalls and trails, glass elevator to Top of the Park, tours, beaches, marina and watercraft, arcade, Fantasy Waters show, and much, much more. Even after adjusting for inflation, you’re paying tons more for increasingly less. Add to that COVID woes, slashed staffing and hours… yeah, what a joke.

They had the gall to get rid of Steakhouse 55, and Goofy’s Kitchen is a whopping $50-65 for generic Denny’s food. Fun as it is, they then have the gall to charge an automatic 18% gratuity. So simply for a party of two at brunch, you’re paying around $20 in tips just to have them bring you juice and water. No thanks.

Gotta hand it to Disney, they’ve done a great job capturing a market of people who will happily drop money they don’t really have for the sake of impressing themselves and others with pretty things. Whatever they can show off online, I guess. Guests once had standards, but I guess people like paying $150 to pose in front of purple walls and wait 45 minutes for a Starbucks on Main Street.

I miss the old Disneyland Hotel, and the only reason I’d stay there is nostalgia. But I won’t drop $700 a night for a bed I can pay a third of for across the street. Simply stroll the grounds on a break from the park, and if you want water slides, stay at the HoJo.

Wife and I stayed there in 2019. The rooms are nothing really special and you can tell the bones of the place are old, but they do try hard to make it look nice. The pool however is amazing! There are many hotel rooms just as nice at non-Disney hotels in walking distance of Disneyland, but none have even half the pool complex of the Disneyland Hotel.

But the pool alone does not make it worth the cost of the room. I doubt we will stay there again. We are staying at the JW Marriott when we go in September. Looks super nice for less than 1/2 the price and only a little further walk than DLH.

Agreed. I thought TP was supposed to be objective. Pretty as the hotel may be, they’ve clearly axed nearly everything that made it special, and threw in some plastic nostalgia to compensate. Face it, the hotel has NOT been worth staying at for at least 10-12 years. I see no way to justify staying there at its current prices, knowing all you’ve lost for the increasing amounts you’re paying for.

I appreciate this look inside the Disneyland hotel. There are so many hotels within walking distance of Disneyland, it’s nice to have a better idea of what you’re actually getting. And the monorail slide looks epic. Does the Disneyland hotel include breakfast?

Nope, it includes nothing. Everything is extra, a lot extra. Seriously, save your thousands and stay elsewhere. Try Del Sol or the Desert Inn across the street.

Looks like “normal hotel room” to me. Yup, some nice accent touches…but nothing you couldn’t get at the Hyatt up the street. Which also has modern luxury and convenances, like indoor plumbing and elevators. Even Glass ones.

Jambo from Disney’s Animal Kingdom Resort, where the wilds of an African savanna meet the comforts of a Deluxe Resort!

Animal Kingdom Lodge Highlights

  • View live safari animals such as giraffes, zebras, and antelopes from many rooms and Resort overlooks.
  • The Resort has amazing food! AKL is widely described as one of the best foodie Resorts.
  • The incredible six-story lobby is full of African artwork and crafts.

safari room disneyland hotel

What is Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge (AKL)?

Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge is a Deluxe Resort hotel proximal to Disney’s Animal Kingdom. It opened April 16, 2001. The main lodge and its adjacent rooms are called Jambo House. (A smaller Disney Vacation Club section of the Resort is called Kidani Village.) Designed by Peter Dominick  (designer of Wilderness Lodge fame), AKL recreates the feel of a South African wildlife reserve lodge. Rooms follow the Kraal African village design, a semicircle concept, offering a view of close to 100 grazing animals and 130 birds on the property and in the private savannas.

safari room disneyland hotel

Like other Disney Resorts, AKL has a distinctive theme carried throughout its architecture, landscape, and interior design. As you drive up to the Resort, the large building appears to be a gathering of huts. The incredible size of the Resort is hidden from the front, so it simulates driving up to a small safari village.

safari room disneyland hotel

Tell me more about the look and feel of Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge.

Animal Kingdom Lodge is six stories tall. You enter the impressive lobby on the third floor of the Resort (though you won’t be climbing three flights of stairs — the Resort entrance is elevated).

safari room disneyland hotel

There is a huge picture window at the far end of the lobby that looks out over 30 acres of land. From here, you can walk out onto an elevated viewing area called Arusha Rock and enjoy the roaming animals.

safari room disneyland hotel

All three savannas are specially-built areas that are just for AKL and are separate from Disney’s Animal Kingdom. There are over 100 Sand Live Oak trees and 35,000 shrubs on the savannas. Seeds for many of the plants were supplied from Africa.

safari room disneyland hotel

Throughout the lobby, there are examples of authentic architecture and design, from thatched ceilings to golden tones reflecting the richness and diversity of an African landscape. Rich wood tones surround a large mud fireplace, and natural lighting will celebrate dawn and dusk with features that accentuate spectacular sunrises and sunsets.

safari room disneyland hotel

Animal Kingdom Lodge is home to the largest collection of African art in the world outside the continent of Africa. You’ll see pieces throughout the lobby, restaurants, and hallways.

safari room disneyland hotel

In the hallways, there are alcoves with glass windows providing savanna overlooks.

safari room disneyland hotel

Next to Animal Kingdom Lodge is Kidani Village (opened May 1, 2009), a Disney Vacation Club Resort. Kidani has its own parking, restaurant, and pool. It shares the Sunset Savanna with Animal Kingdom Lodge Jambo House and has its own savanna (opened fall 2009) called Pembe.

What types of accommodations are available?

The accommodations offered at AKL were updated in 2019 and feature more muted colors and patterns than the original design. Though the previous jewel-toned soft goods were vibrant, the new design is understated and elegant. Heavy, carved wood furniture gives an air of natural grandeur.

safari room disneyland hotel

The following are the room types and quantity of rooms in each category:

  • Standard View (facing the parking lot) 135 rooms
  • Pool View 136 rooms
  • Savanna View 724 rooms
  • Deluxe Pool View 33 rooms
  • Deluxe savanna View 191 rooms
  • Concierge 55 rooms

The Deluxe rooms (381 square feet) are bigger than the Standard rooms (344 square feet).

There are 79 king bed rooms, and there are 65 accessible rooms with king bed, roll-in shower, accessible seat for toilet, TDD kit, and ADA guide maps. There are also Presidential and Vice Presidential suites, as well as five one-bedroom suites and 12 two-bedroom parlor suites.

safari room disneyland hotel

Some rooms also include sleeper sofas. Some rooms feature an additional dresser. Each room that is not ground level, no matter what the category or view, has a balcony that is long and narrow.

safari room disneyland hotel

The suites are located at the end of the animal trails. What type of amenities are offered?

The rooms have a small safe in the closet to store valuables. It’s big enough for your plane tickets, cash/travelers checks, and maybe some jewelry — but not much more. For storing larger valuables, inquire at the front desk. In addition, you’ll also find a hairdryer, small coffee maker with packets of coffee and tea, iron and ironing board, and a small refrigerator. Valet parking, voice mail, and room service are also available.

Walt Disney World Resort has complimentary Wi-Fi service in all of its resorts. See our Internet Access page for details.

I hear that there are no more room keys at Disney resort hotels. How do I get into my room?

Walt Disney World has converted their room keys and admission tickets from plastic cards to MagicBands, flexible plastic wristbands, resembling a watch or bracelet, that use Radio Frequency (RF) technology. Your MagicBand is linked to your My Disney Experience (MDE) account and acts as your Disney resort room key. Simply touch the Mickey symbol on your MagicBand to the RFID reader near your room door to gain entry. Read about using MagicBands for park admission, FastPass+ and more here .

safari room disneyland hotel

You can also use  your My Disney Experience app on your smartphone to open your Resort room door.

Are there smoking and nonsmoking rooms?

All Disney resorts and guest rooms are now smoke-free . There are designated outdoor smoking areas. Check the resort map or with a Cast Member for locations.

How does check-in work?

Online Check-in is available through the My Disney Experience app. Look for the special Online Check-in line at the Resort’s front desk when you arrive, or wait for a text with your room location information.

Check-in is at 3PM. Upon arrival head to the front desk to check-in (if you haven’t checked in online). Rooms are not guaranteed to be available until 3PM, but you can request early check-in when you do Online Check-in, and you may have your wish granted if there’s availability.

safari room disneyland hotel

Early check-in allows you to leave luggage with bell services, get your MagicBands (if you don’t already have them), and head off to the Parks or Disney Springs or to relax around the Resort. You will be get a notification on My Disney Experience when your room is ready. You will then be given your room number, and your MagicBand (or MDE app) will open your door!

Check-out time is 11AM. Express Check-out is available to all guests paying with a credit card. You used to have to arrange for this service at check-in, but it’s standard procedure now. A detailed hotel bill is delivered to your door by 7AM. If the bill is correct you simply leave. Your MagicBand serves as a Disney souvenir, so take it home with you. Late Check-out of noon can be requested without additional cost (note that there’s very limited availability). If you need Late Check-out, request it at Check-In and as soon as possible the morning of check out (the number of eligible rooms are limited).

Resort Airline Check-In Service at your Disney resort is only available if you are flying domestically (includes Puerto Rico) on specific airlines It is a complimentary (free) service and allows you to check your luggage.

What kind of concierge service is available?

AKL’s concierge (or club level) guest rooms are located on part of floor 5 and all of 6. The actual lounge and staff are located on the 6th floor. The concierge rooms are identical to the Deluxe rooms in terms of size and amenities (with a few extra). You can not book a specific concierge view. They are either a Pool View or Sunset or Arusha Savanna View. For some odd reason, the lounge was not built with a Savanna View and instead opens to the lobby on the 6th floor.

safari room disneyland hotel

The lounge is wonderful and large, and the food is quite good. You also have a selection of South African wines to try as well. The Cast Members can assist you in dining, entertainment, or just about any Disney plans you might want to make.

What are the savannas like?

Animal Kingdom Lodge has three separate savannas (approximately ten acres each) that are open 24 hours a day. From left to right the savannas are named: Sunset, Arusha, and Uzima.

Each savanna has its own unique look and feel. Not all savannas have all the animals. For instance, ostriches can only be found on the Sunset savanna, zebras are only located on the Arusha savanna, and kudu are only found on the Uzima savanna. Giraffes are the only animal found on all three savannas.

safari room disneyland hotel

Each room at the Resort has an animal viewing guide. You can also pick one up at the front desk.

At night, the savannas are illuminated by artificial moonlight as if a full moon were ever present.

“Safari Guides” are Cast Members in the outside viewing areas who can answer your questions about the animals and birds.

safari room disneyland hotel

Altogether, more than 200 mammals and three dozen birds populate the 33-acre area. The savannas surround the Lodge on three sides. You can view the birds and animals from Resort balconies or from several viewing points — including a landscaped rock outcropping called the Arusha Rock kopje — 24 hours a day.

Are the animals and birds on the savannas 24 hours a day? Where do they sleep?

The savannas are the actual home for the animals and birds. All animals inhabiting the savanna return periodically to an on-site animal care facility for feeding and routine care. Many of the species browse, as well, on savanna plantings that are part of their everyday diet and are continually replenished by horticulturists.

safari room disneyland hotel

The animals sleep on the savannas, although they are generally much further back. You probably won’t be able to see them sleep. Each savanna is closed daily for approximately two hours for cleaning and handling animals, in shifts. There will always be at least two savannas open at all times. A number of the animals are nocturnal, so you may spot them in the middle of the night.

What animals and birds might I see on the savannas?

The following animals may be found on at least one of the three Animal Kingdom Lodge Savannas:

  • Anikole Cattle
  • Grant’s Zebra
  • Greater Kudu
  • Reticulated Giraffe
  • Thomson’s Gazelle
  • Red River Hogs
  • White-Bearded Wildebeest.

safari room disneyland hotel

  • Abyssinian Ground Hornbill
  • East African Crowned Crane
  • Greater Flamingo
  • Marabou Stork
  • Pink-Backed Pelican
  • Ruppel’s Griffon Vulture.

Where did the animals come from?

The first two inhabitants of Disney’s Animal Kingdom, two giraffes, became the first two inhabitants of AKL. The other animals either originated at Animal Kingdom or arrived from other accredited zoological facilities.

Will I be able to touch or feed the animals? What responsibilities do I have regarding the animals and birds?

No, you may not touch or feed the animals. If you attempt to do so, you risk expulsion from the Resort.

The safety of both the guests and the animals is very important. As an in-room notice states:

To assist the animal care staff in maintaining the health and safety of the animals, please do not feed them or drop items into the habitats. Also, please do not attempt to approach or cross the barriers designed for guest and animal safety. If any guest attempts to harm the animals or their habitats, they will be immediately asked to leave the resort. During your stay you may notice cameras in and around the savannas. These cameras are for the protection and safety of our animals. For privacy, please close your drapes.

What  safari experiences are available?

Sunset (wanyama) safari.

The Sunset or Wanyama Safari takes place on the savannas of Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge. It is meant to be a re-creation of a true African afternoon game drive and is an opportunity to spend time with members from the animal programs team learning about the natural history and management of the animal collection at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge. Your safari will conclude with a true African dining experience at Jiko.

For pricing and other details, visit the Wanyama Safari page.

How do I get to the Disney theme parks, water parks, and Disney Springs?

All Disney transportation to and from AKL is via bus. As you exit the main lobby, the bus station is down to the left. There are several stops to take you to the theme parks, water parks and Disney Springs. The buses that service AKL do not service other Resorts.

You may walk or take bus over to Kidani Village, the Disney Vacation Club area next to Animal Kingdom Lodge.

Is morning coffee available?

All rooms should be equipped with a small coffee maker and complimentary coffee packets. In addition, Mara, the Quick Service restaurant located on Jambo House’s lower level, serves coffee. Be sure to get a Rapid Fill mug if you drink lots of coffee and soda. Hours at Mara are usually 6:00AM to 11:30PM.

Describe the restaurants that are at the Animal Kingdom Lodge .

Animal Kingdom Lodge is widely considered one of the best “foodie Resorts.” Reservations for the Resort’s Table Service dining are highly recommended.

The restaurants offer a blend of African, Malaysian, Indian, Chinese, and French cuisine with a dash of English served with a hint of classical flair. The menus reflect a blend of sweet and savory international tastes.

Jiko – The Cooking Place

Jiko is a Signature restaurant serving dinner that features a taste of Africa in an atmosphere shaped by traditions and customs. The design represents an abstract view of Africa, with twin wood-burning ovens as the restaurant’s icon. Jiko consistently ranks among the best Walt Disney World restaurants in both food and service.

safari room disneyland hotel

Boma — Flavors of Africa is a very popular buffet restaurant open for breakfast and dinner. Boma captures the essence of vibrant life in the African marketplace. This buffet has great variety and is known for its carved meats, various soups, and one iconic dessert: Zebra Domes.

The restaurant showcases an open kitchen, and a wood-burning grill and rotisserie fills the Resort lobby (located two floors up) with intoxicating aromas. The dining stations at Boma are under thatched roofs.

Sanaa is a beloved Table Service restaurant located in Kidani Village. It offers full service lunch and dinner. This is an excellent restaurant — and is very underrated — therefore it’s usually easy to snag a reservation. Sanaa’s large windows offer a view of the Savanna.

safari room disneyland hotel

I’m interested in hearing about the food options for vegetarians and plant-based diners.

There are lots of vegetarian and plant-based options available at Jiko, Boma, Sanaa, and Mara! There were several items on the Jiko menu that would/could easily be adapted to vegetarian or are plant-based already. The chefs are very tuned into special diets. At Boma, ask the chefs at each of the stations, and they will take care of you!

Is there a gift shop at the Animal Kingdom Lodge?

Yes! It’s called the Zawindi Marketplace. It has a combination of Disney souvenirs and artist creations.

safari room disneyland hotel

Featured marketplace items include: Zulu baskets, hand-loomed fabrics and textiles, hand-carved masks, beaded gourds, hand-carved chess sets, and an assortment of authentic accents.

What about Laundry facilities?

The laundry room is located on the first floor of Jambo House. Learn more about Disney’s laundry services here and LaundryView here .

Are there any special programs at AKL?

Yes, there are a number of special programs offered throughout the day at AKL. Be sure to ask for a list when you check into the hotel. A sampling of the recent programs offered at the Resort (all programs subject to change without notice):

  • flamingo feedings at the Flamingo Pond
  • animal tracking at Arusha Rock
  • music of the Savanna in the Sunset Lounge
  • wildlife games in the Sunset Lounge
  • African games and crafts on the Uzima Pool Deck
  • cultural safari in the Sunset Lounge
  • animal viewing with Night Vision
  • cookie decorating at Boma

Outside, at the Arusha Rock, there is nightly African storytelling next to Ogun’s Firepit. (Storytelling is held indoors in the event of inclement weather.) If you have the opportunity, take the time to speak with the storytellers.

safari room disneyland hotel

What types of recreation are available?

AKL has a themed pool, a kids’ wading pool, two outdoor spas (“hot tubs”) and a fitness center. There is also a kid’s playground.

safari room disneyland hotel

The Uzima Springs pool is the second-largest on Disney property at over 11,000 square feet. It is also a “Zero-Depth Entry” pool, meaning there is an entrance without steps. I saw lots and lots of kids (young ones, too) enjoying the 67-foot long slide and kiddy wade pool area. There is no quiet pool at AKL.

safari room disneyland hotel

The Uzima pool is open 24 hours, but the lifeguards go off duty at 10PM, and the slide also closes. The two spas close at midnight.

Guests at Jambo House can also venture over to Kidani Village to enjoy the Samawati Springs Pool, which has a fun splash area for the kiddos.

safari room disneyland hotel

Is there a fitness center?

Zahanati Fitness Center is open from 6AM to 9PM at no additional charge to Animal Kingdom Lodge guests 14 and over. Those 14-17 must be accompanied by parent or guardian.

safari room disneyland hotel

The Fitness Center has a full line of Cybex equipment, including a Smith machine. The cardiovascular area has Life Fitness Treadmills, Stairmasters and Bicycles (regular and recumbent).

safari room disneyland hotel

Zahanati Fitness Center is also a massage center. Spa services include massages and facials. It is recommended to book these in advance by calling 407-WDW-SPAS.

What kid’s services are there at this Resort?

There are lots of children of all ages having a wonderful time and full of smiles. Many kids were all over the Lodge with their animal checklists in hand. The storytelling in the evenings is geared to both children and adults. There is always the pool, and as time goes on, more more kids’ activities will be added.

There is an area in the lobby and also in Mara with a TV that plays Disney movies. Pumbaa’s Arcade appeals to many kids.

safari room disneyland hotel

There is no child care activity center at this resort. For child care alternatives, visit our Child Care FAQ.

Balloons at Animal Kingdom Lodge

AKL does not allow balloons inside the Resort. Any balloons brought to the Resort (from the theme parks, for example) will have to be checked with bell services for the duration of the guest’s stay. They will be returned upon departure. This information might be helpful to families with younger children, so there are no disappointments when returning to the Resort.

Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge

Lots of people dream of taking an African safari. Yet for many, it seems otherworldly and out of reach. Of course, leave it to Disney to make dreams come true. When you stay at Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge, you’ll experience all the creature comforts of a world-class resort while feeling like you’re on the best kind of safari. Think no canteens, eminent danger, mosquito nets or hot nights. Did we mention up-close encounters with giraffes grazing and ostriches padding along the savanna?

Authentic Touches

Designed in the typical African kraal style, the horseshoe shaped resort overlooks four savannas. Although the resort’s main lure is the magnificent wildlife, Disney does a phenomenal job of integrating African art, culture and cuisine into this AAA Four Diamond-rated property.

Upon entering, you will be greeted by towering ceilings strung with impressive chandeliers, a thatched roof, a floor-to-ceiling window overlooking the savanna, and an enormous fireplace perfect for storytelling.

Jambo House, the original Deluxe Resort, and the Kidani Village, a Disney Vacation Club ® Resort, both have the air of an exotic locale, but at the same time feel warm and welcoming as if you’ve come home. Although the savanna-view rooms are optimal, each floor offers an open-air balcony with stunning views and rocking chairs beckoning guests to unwind.

Animals aren’t the only amazing view. Peruse one of the largest collections of African art in the world featured throughout the resort. Behold the Igbo Ijele Mask, towering at over 16 feet tall and 8 feet in width. Whatever you do, carve out time to chat with Cast Members who are actually from a wide range of African countries. These ambassadors are more than willing to share their stories and histories, which only add to the rich quality of the experience.

Majestic Wildlife

Besides a true African safari, where else could you wake up and walk out onto a balcony and spot a zebra? A state-of-the-art barrier system allows  Disney's Animal Kingdom  Lodge guests the opportunity to view wildlife in a setting like no other.

The four lush savannas are home to over 200 animals representing over 30 species. Be prepared to marvel at the wildlife right outside your balcony or even in the common lookout areas.

For your convenience, each guest room is equipped with a Wildlife Guide Book making it easy to identify and learn about the majestic animals roaming the savannas. Animal guides are on hand to share wildlife information and even impart practical know-how on animal tracking. Some of the animals you may track are zebras, giraffes, gazelles, kudu, Ankole cattle, water bucks, wildebeests, geese, cranes and flamingoes.

Culinary Explorations

In keeping with the African theme, all restaurants at Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge feature African-inspired cuisine as well as American cuisine. At Boma — Flavors of Africa, it’s a buffet to beat all buffets for breakfast and dinner. Omelets, carved ham, French toast and exceptionally fluffy scrambled eggs are big hits with the breakfast crowd.

At dinner time, stroll in and watch chefs prepare savory roasted meats and grilled seafood. There’s also a nice balance of vegetarian specialties and salads. Zebra domes are a dessert standout. Almost truffle-like, this sweet concoction is a combination of a thin layer of cake topped with an Amarula cream liquor mousse coated with white chocolate ganache. Chocolate drizzle forms stripes that give this yummy creation its namesake.

Distinguished as fine dining, Jiko — The Cooking Place is not to be missed. For starters, you want to try the artisanal cheese selection along with a wine pairing from their extensive wine collection. Entrees vary from lobster tail to Bostwana-style seswaa beef short rib to maize-crusted halibut. As for dessert, the Ghanian chocolate & Kenyan coffee pot de crème is a delightful finish to a meal that undoubtedly will leave a lasting impression.

Venture to Sanaa for a variety of flavorful slow-cooked meat entrees, inventive salads and seasonal vegetarian offerings. Casual or on-the-go diners will enjoy The Mara, where you can sit down for a tasty African stew or select from plenty of American fare — salads, sandwiches and more. Best of all, they even sell packaged zebra domes for those with a sweet tooth on the go. And crafted specialty cocktail like the Mt. Kilimarita or an ice-cold Casa Blanca lager from Morocco are available at Victoria Falls Lounge — a great spot to congregate before or after dinner.

Relaxation is inevitable while lounging by the pool, and this one is a zero-entry, 11,000-square-foot pool with a 67-foot water slide, which mimics a natural watering hole and also features a children’s wading pool as well as two hot tub areas.

The Samawati Springs Pool has a water slide and two hot tub areas. It also boasts an animal-themed water playground named Uwanja Camp, where squirting Venus flytraps, a rope bridge and water cannons make this the ultimate, fun-spirited playground.

Every day, families can also take advantage of scheduled animal-related activities and educational workshops. At sunset, weather permitting, there’s even a Disney movie under the stars at the main pool.

If shopping is your thing, then head to Zawadi Market Place, an authentic purveyor of African-crafted jewelry, baskets, masks and a variety of one-of-a-kind souvenirs. And for those seeking other indoor activities, the Zahanati Massage & Fitness Center is the perfect spot to grab a quick workout or decompress with a relaxing massage. As the sun dips and night falls, you’re in for a special treat — a campfire with storytelling, sing-a-longs and scrumptious roasted marshmallows under a night sky.

Disney Adds More Marvel: Another Park Classic Receiving Superhero Retheme

in Disney Parks

Vibrant artwork of Marvel superheroes, including iron man, thor, and doctor strange, in action with colorful beams of light and a cosmic backdrop at a theme park.

If The Walt Disney Company loves to do one thing in 2024, it’s work as much IP into its theme parks as possible – especially Marvel.

The past few years have seen the opening of not one but two Avengers Campus lands (one in California Adventure, one in Walt Disney Studios Park), as well as a third Marvel land at Hong Kong Disneyland known as Stark Expo.

Guests ride Avengers Assemble: Flight Force next as Captain Marvel flies alongside their ride vehicle

Not content with entire lands, Disney has also opened separate  Guardians of the Galaxy  (2014) attractions at both California Adventure and EPCOT, as well as announcing a temporary Marvel overlay for one of its most classic rides (“it’s a small world”) at Tokyo Disneyland from winter 2025.

The latter hasn’t gone down particularly well with Disney purists . After the announcement dropped in March, fans argued that it was “infuriating and a zillion times more disrespectful to the spirit of the attraction than the addition of (actual) Disney characters ever was.”

Cartoon versions of Marvel characters, including Baby Groot, in a poster for a new version of "it's a small world."

Despite the negative sentiment floating around the integration of Marvel into existing Disney properties, another addition was announced last month – and as of today, guests can finally book to experience it for themselves .

Disney’s Hollywood Hotel is officially debuting Marvel rooms as of this summer . The hotel (which, as you probably guessed from the name, is inspired by classic Hollywood) only reopened from its mass makeover last year but saved a special surprise for the superhero-obsessed until 2024.

Marvel-themed rooms now available at Disney’s Hollywood Hotel 🛏️ Reservations will start from May 10th for check-in on August 9th! #HKDL_info #HKDL
「ディズニー・ハリウッド・ホテル」Marvelテーマルーム、 本日より予約スタート! #HKDL_info #HKDL https://t.co/6C3Thr2u1Y — Emporium HKDL情報🏰✨ (@hk_emporium) May 10, 2024

Like Disney’s existing Marvel hotel , Disney Hotel New York – The Art of Marvel in Disneyland Paris, the rooms feature subtle Art Deco touches inspired by the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Rooms are limited but are now open for bookings for check-in dates after August 10, 2024.

This may be the latest Marvel addition to Disney’s theme parks, but it certainly won’t be the last. In September, Marvel superheroes will make their Tokyo Disney Resort debut in its brand-new, as-yet-unnamed fireworks show. Disneyland Resort is also set to receive a new Avengers E-Ticket attraction at some point in the future, as previewed at Destination D23 in September.

Female Marvel superheroes gather in Tomorrowland

Hong Kong Disneyland is also said to receive another Marvel E-Ticket attraction named Avengers Quinjet Experience (although the park hasn’t offered an update on this in a few years). Meanwhile, rumors have swirled that Disney World could receive its own Avengers Campus as a part of the resort’s $17 billion investment plan over the next decade.

Do you think Disney should integrate more Marvel into its theme parks? Let us know in the comments!

What to know about Knott's Hotel at Knott's Berry Farm

I recently checked out the revamped Knott’s Hotel at Knott’s Berry Farm in Southern California’s Buena Park. It was my first time at the hotel, so I didn’t get the full before-and-after impact, but when I asked someone what it was like before the major renovation, they answered: “think 1980s bank.” It was a candid and funny answer that really drove home just how big of a change the hotel has undergone.

PUT TO THE TEST: Which hotel booking sites are the best?

Farmhouse chic—warm, inviting, and comfortable with plenty of personal touches—rules in the airy two-story lobby. A massive chandelier inspired by antique jam jars (this is Knott’s Berry Farm, after all) creates a cool centerpiece to the great room, and details like antique china in display cases and carpets decorated with a boysenberry motif add more rustic-elegant charm.

The 322 renovated guest rooms are laid out in three configurations: standard two queen, oversized two queen, and single queen or king rooms. Many of the rooms offer adjoining interior doors, and a few are configured so you can connect up to three rooms.

THEME PARK PACKING LIST: What not to wear (and what to wear instead)

I stayed in a standard two queen room with two kids. There was plenty of room for all of us (we could have easily fit four), though if I were staying for longer than a night or two, the larger oversized room (400 square feet instead of 300 square feet) might have been a better fit, since it also has extra seating space and a little kitchenette area with a sink, mini-fridge, and some storage.

Rooms come with Keurig coffee makers and mini-fridge, a pull-out sofa, large flat screen television, WiFi, and toiletries in the hotel’s signature boysenberry-vanilla signature scent (the whole hotel smells a bit like baking pie).

The hotel has its own restaurant, Thirty Acres Kitchen (a nod to the 30 acres of farmland that was the original Knott’s farm). Inside, booths are separated by repurposed window panes and a double-sided bar that serves both the restaurant and lobby runs along one side of the dining room. There’s a big patio that’s popular on warm days. Signature dishes lean heavily on boysenberry (boysenberry BBQ chicken salad, boysenberry-topped pancakes, and boysenberry coffee, for instance), but the menu has options to suit all tastes and diets, including vegetarian, vegan, and gluten free. The restaurant is also home to the generous and varied daily buffet breakfast, which is included in some of the hotel’s packages.

The pool

The hotel has a large pool with a splash pad and plenty of room to kick back and relax when you need a break from the park.

Proximity to Knott’s Berry Farm and Knott’s Soak City

If you’re walking from the Knott’s Berry Farm hotel to the theme park, it’s a 500-step, less-than-10-minute stroll (or if you’re with kids, sprint) through a parking lot and along a walking path (it takes you right by a large gift shop outside the park as well as past Mrs. Knott’s Chicken Dinner Restaurant, the spot that turned the original farm stand into what it is today).

To the seasonally open Knott’s Soak City, it’s a two-minute drive or a 20-ish minute walk from the hotel.

Hotel packages

Knott’s Hotel has packages throughout the year that bundle hotel stays, park tickets, and extra perks like Fast Lane vouchers, buffet breakfast, and parking. During the Halloween season (the park goes all-in on Halloween), there are hotel packages that include a Haunt dinner before Haunt nights in the park.

An alternative to Disneyland area hotels

Knott’s Hotel is about 15 minutes from Disneyland and runs a free shuttle to Disneyland throughout the day and evening, which makes it a non-traditional but affordable alternative to Disneyland hotels and gives you the chance to work two theme parks into your Southern California theme park vacation with one easy home base.
